Zombie cyborg wood aids night vision

A new so-called cyberwood that continues to work even after its living components die could lead to technological advances in thermal night-vision cameras and temperature sensors.

This "zombie" cyborg wood is a hybrid material made of tobacco laced withteensy carbon tubes, and the whole contraption can act like a heat detector even after the plant cells have perished.

Currently, electronic thermometers and thermal night-vision cameras sense heat by using materials whose electrical conductivity changes as the temperature changes. The best heat-detecting materials available now change their electrical conductivity just by a few percent per degree temperature change.

In contrast, the new cyberwood that the scientists created is hundreds of times more responsive to changes in temperature than the best man-made materials currently used in heat detectors. Samples of cyberwood were sensitive enough to detect people from only their body heat from a distance of up to 31.5 inches (80 centimeters) away. Prior research had revealed that living plants are exceptionally sensitive to changes in temperature. Their sensitivity is based on the behavior of chemicals within the cell walls of the plants. However, this sensitivity fades after the cells die.

To create a material with the potential to be as temperature-sensitive as plants, scientists watered tobacco cells with a solution loaded with carbon nanotubes, hollow pipes just nanometers (billionths of a meter) in diameter. Although carbon nanotubes are only about the width of a strand of DNA, they are about 100 times stronger than steel and only one-sixth as heavy. Moreover, their conductive properties for both electricity and heat rival those of the best metal conductors.

The carbon nanotubes formed a complex network among the plant cells and partially infiltrated the plant cell walls. The resulting cyberwood has a microscopic structure that resembles that of natural wood, and mechanical properties similar to those of balsam fir, a kind of pine tree, the researchers said in the new study.

"We are not trying to engineer plants with nanotechnology we let plant cells do the nanoengineering," said study co-author Chiara Daraio, a materials scientist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. "Instead of trying to mimic properties found in biological systems, we allow biological systems to fabricate new materials for us, with properties not achievable before in man-made materials."

The carbon nanotubes served as permanent electrically conductive pathways that substituted for water after the cyberwood dehydrated, stabilizing its unique properties even after the plant cells died.

"It is possible to immortalize, in composite materials that combine biological and synthetic elements, properties that are common only in living plants," Daraio told Live Science. [Incredible Tech: How to Engineer Life in the Lab]

Mazinkaiser SKL's Kawagoe Helms Cyborg 009's New 50th Anniversary Anime

The official website of the late manga creator Shotaro Ishinomori announced on Tuesday that director Jun Kawagoe is helming a new Cyborg 009 anime project. The project celebrates the 50th anniversary since Ishinomori's original Cyborg 009 manga was first serialized in 1964. The website also revealed a visual for the project.

Jun Kawagoe previously directed the 52-episode Cyborg 009 The Cyborg Soldier television anime series, which began in 2001 and ended in 2002. Ishinomori's official website teases:

Ishinomori first launched the Cyborg 009 manga in the Weekly Shonen King magazine in 1964, and the series remained unfinished due to his death in 1998. Three Cyborg 009 television anime series adapting his manga premiered in 1968, 1979, and 2001. Four theatrical anime film adaptations also debuted in 1966, 1967, 1980, and 2012. Kenji Kamiyama directed the latest film in the franchise, 009 Re:Cyborg, in 2012. Mamoru Oshii also directed his own 3D short of Cyborg 009 in 2010 with sponsor Panasonic.

'Cyborg' posts pic of 'Brazilian curves,' unsure she can make 135 with 'Brazilian bootay'

Cristiane Justinomight not have scientific evidence that its impossible for her to make 135 pounds, but shes offering up some visual evidence if youre interested in giving her the eyeball test.

Justino (13-1), of course, is the current Invicta FC featherweight champion. Shes also generally considered one of the only women on the planet with a shot at beating UFC womens bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey(11-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC).

Of course, the two women currently compete in different weight classes, and Rowdy has made it clear shes not interested in doing any favors for the Brazilian slugger and moving up a division for what would unquestionably be the biggest fight in the history of womens MMA.

Instead, UFC officials have made it clear that if Justino wants the chance to challenge Rousey, shell need to make 135 pounds in a fight outside of the promotion. At that point, shell be welcomed into the octagon for a showdown with the champ.

But the 5-foot-8 Justino has also made it clear shes not certain its physically possible for her to get that low, leaving some doubt as to whether that matchup will ever actually happen.

Justino is currently working with performance nutrition consultant George Lockhart in hopes of making the cut down to bantamweight. Time will tell whether or not the efforts net the intended result. In the meantime, Justino seems content to keep her brazilian bootay, at least for spring break.

Justino is expected to compete again this summer under the Invicta FC banner. Meanwhile, Rousey returns to action on Aug. 1, when she meets Bethe Correia in the main event of UFC 190.
