The Ronda Rousey Sweepstakes: How Cris Cyborg Lost More Than a Fight

It's not really fair to say MMA standout Cris "Cyborg" Justino lost big at Lion Fight 14 Friday night in Las Vegas. After all, in just her third professional kickboxing match, Cyborg gave Jorina Baars, an undefeated Dutch standout, all she could handle in a thrilling all-action fight on AXS TV.

But life isn't fair. Anyone who says otherwise, to borrow from a great man, is selling something.

For five rounds Cyborg did what she always doesshe charged forward with a startling recklessness, looking to end the fight quickly. When Cyborg managed to close the distance and get into the pocket, Baars found herself thrown to the mat or fending off haymakers, hanging on for dear life.

Cyborg was a vicious, snarling animal.

Business as usual.

That wasn't, however, the story of the fight. Though Cyborg controlled the bulk of the action, the unanimous decision win for Baars was written in the few moments the inexperienced MMA champion gambled and lost. When Baars circled away or timed Cyborg's inbound trajectory properly, she made rangy knees and rangier push kicks to the face count, putting Cyborg on the mat or wobbling her several times with brilliant shots to the head.

Baarstalked toMMA Fighting's Shaun Al-Shattiafter the fight:

I'm aMuayThai fighter. She's an MMA fighter...I will beat her. That's every opponent, I will beat them. It's my sport. It's my style...The gameplan was to put Cris in my range and stick with the knees, and when she comes in, put a knee up or a kick push attempt in her face. It worked.

In a perfect world, we'd be celebrating Cyborg's accomplishment. Although just 25 years old, Baars was an undefeated fighter entering her 38th professional fight. If there's such a thing as a moral victory, this was certainly one.Baars is so feared on the kickboxing circuit, in fact, that no one has been willing to fight her for three years.

Baars after defeating Cyborg says 'It's my sport'

LAS VEGAS -- If you're looking for the person least surprised that Jorina Baars defeated Cris Cyborg on Friday night at Lion Fight 14, look no further than Baars herself.

"I'm a Muay Thai fighter. She's an MMA fighter," Baars told MMAFighting.com following her upset win. "I will beat her. That's every opponent, I will beat them. It's my sport. It's my style."

Baars, 25, while not as outwardly menacing as the current Invicta FC featherweight champion, is nonetheless undefeated over the course of her professional kickboxing career, which includes several title-winning performances.

The Netherlands native's reputation is said to have grown so imposing that it forced her into inactivity for three years, as no fighter in Europe was willing to challenge her.

"I'm never intimidated of an opponent," Baars said. "The gameplan was to put Cris in my range and stick with the knees, and when she comes in, put a knee up or a kick push attempt in her face. It worked."

Baars knocked Cyborg down early in the opening frame with a front kick, then continued to unload a steady diet of hard knees and kicks to ultimately score a unanimous decision win by scores of 49-45, 48-45 and 49-44, capturing the inaugural Lions Fight women's welterweight title.

Yet Cyborg, a relative newcomer to the sport of Muay Thai, was anything but dismayed in defeat.

"I'm so happy because I gave her five rounds with her, a champion of Muay Thai," Cyborg said. "No girl wants to fight her. She hasn't fought in three years.

"She's had eight belts and 38 fights, zero (losses). She's never lost. I have two fights in Muay Thai.

"She had a good gameplan against me," Cyborg added. "She's tall. It's hard to punch her in the face. ... The first round I said, okay, I can lose this fight. But I fought hard, I was ready for a war."

Cris 'Cyborg' Justino Defeated by Jorina Baars in Kickboxing at Lion Fight 14

Former Strikeforce champion and current Invicta FC champion Cris "Cyborg" Justino has just tasted defeat for the first time in a long, long while.

Competing in a Muay Thai kickboxing match Friday at Lion Fight 14, Cyborg dropped a unanimous decision in her title fight opposite Jorina Baars. The Dutch kickboxer entered the night with an impressive 35-0-3 record in Muay Thai, and remained undefeated in her return after a three-year hiatus from kickboxing.

In the first round, Baars twice rocked Cyborg, once with a front kick that caught her as she was coming in, and again with a headkick. Baars continued controlling much of the fight, stifling Cyborg with her rangy jab and kicks. It looked early on like Cyborg may have gassed out. She battled back hard in the final two rounds, but was unable to bridge the gap on the scorecards.

In the end, Baars got the nod from all three judges to the tune of 49-45, 48-45, 49-44.

Cyborg has bounced between competition in MMA, with Invicta FC, and kickboxing, with Lion Fight, since 2013. She debuted with Lion Fight in 2013 with a third-round knockout of Jennifer Holcomb. Worth noting, though, was that she looked a bit less muscular for this bout compared to recent outings (which may suggest she is looking to make good on her promises to drop to 135 pounds and retire Ronda Rousey).

For Baars, this provides a much-needed reboot to her kickboxing career. She credits her undefeated record for keeping her out of the ring for nearly three years, during that time amassing a humble 1-3 professional record (not including a 0-1 amateur record) in MMA. It will be interesting to see where she goes from here, and what Lion Fight can do to keep her active now that she owns their belt.

Cristiane 'Cyborg' Justino battles for Muay Thai title, but knows move to bantamweight is key

Cris "Cyborg" Justino, the elephant in the room when any discussion of Ronda Rousey as the best woman fighter in the world is brought up, has a battle plan that includes proving late this summer that she can make 135 pounds, and challenge the UFC champion in her own weight class. But first, she battles for the Lion Fight Muay Thai welterweight title Friday night against Jorina Baars.

Cris "Cyborg" Justino is now talking openly about fighting at 135 pounds, with a time frame of the late summer or early fall set for her debut in the new division.

This, of course, is to open the door to fight with UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey.

Making 135 isn't going to be easy for someone who said she was 165 pounds with four percent body fat before cutting this week. She wasn't expecting it to be a piece of cake cutting to 145 for her Muay Thai fight on Friday night with two-time champion Jorina Baars of The Netherlands. The bout, a five-rounder to create the women's welterweight (145 pound) title, airs live on AXS TV, from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. She's had issues making 145 in the past, including one fight being only able to get down to 151 before the California commission ordered her to stop cutting over health reasons. But she has made 145 for seven MMA fights and two kickboxing matches since 2009. Baars, 25, has had her own problems getting fights of late. She has a 35-0-3 record, but it's been three years since she's fought last. Baars has claimed nobody in Europe was willing to face her.

But no matter who Justino is fighting, the discussion always ends up in the same place, with Rousey.

She has claimed Rousey is trying to avoid her. Rousey, on the other hand, stated that she believes the failed test has made Justino's entire career a fraud. She's always said she would be willing to face her, whether she was clean or not, if she got to 135 pounds. UFC did try and put the fight together last year as it's first woman's fight ever. But negotiations at the time broke down over money, and Rousey instead faced Liz Carmouche.

At the time, Justino said, for health reasons, she couldn't make that weight. But now, among her biggest goals this year is to prove the opposite.

After Friday, her schedule is for a May MMA fight in Invicta at 145 pounds, a July return to Muay Thai with Lion Fights, also at 145, and then making 135 for the first time for an Invicta fight in either August or September.

She said if it was up to her, she'd like to fight every two months, and if there's an opening, she's also up for competing in jiu-jitsu tournaments this year.

"I (will) try to make 135," she said. "I will try. I think it's very important to make 135 so I can fight for the belt, and because I want to keep that weight class because there are more girls I can fight. I can fight a superfight. I'm already the champ at 145 (she holds the featherweight title with Invicta). I don't want to be selfish. I want one more belt. If I can fight at 135 for the belt, it's okay. I can fight at 145 and be more healthy. But it's not possible at 145 or a catch weight because Ronda is running from me. If I make 135, Ronda can't run."

The cyborg sports invasion is coming

Relaxnews Mar 28, 2014

, Last Updated: 11:30 AM ET

The world's first Cybathlon, a sporting competition designed for bionic athletes, is set to take place in Zurich in 2016.

While current parathletic events allow athletes to use prosthetics to get to the same sporting capacity as able-bodied participants, the Cybathlon will actively encourage the use and development of pioneering robotic technology.

Prizes will be awarded to both the winning athletes in each event and to the company behind the software or technological device used.

Organized on behalf of the Swiss National Competence Center of Research in Robotics (NCCR Robotics), the competition is open to technology already available on the market, or to research development projects by laboratories.

Six separate events will be open to athletes -- a BCI (Brain Computer Interface) race, an FES (Functional Electrical Stimulation) bike race, a leg prosthetics race, a powered exoskeleton race, a powered wheelchair race and an arm prosthetics race.

"The rules of the competition are made in such way that the novel technology will give the pilot an advantage over a pilot that would use a comparable but less advanced or conventional assistive technology," explains the event's website.

"There will be as few technical constraints as possible, in order to encourage the device providers to develop novel and powerful solutions."
