This is a first-person RPG/shooter in which players assume the role of a mercenary named V trying to make their way through the open-world of Night City. Players can explore futuristic locations, interact with citizens, perform missions, and engage in combat to complete various objectives within a storyline. Characters use handguns, machine guns, rifles, and explosives during frenetic firefights with humans and cybernetically enhanced enemies; players can also use melee weapons (e.g., wrist-mounted blades, enhanced limbs) to stab enemies and, in some cases, dismember them. Combat is frenetic, with frequent gunfire, cries of pain, explosions, and blood-splatter effects. Some locations depict mutilated corpses with open chest cavities and/or exposed organs/entrails. During one quest, players assist a character by hammering nails through his hands and feet; screaming sounds and blood effects accompany the scene. The game contains nudity and sexual material: Players can select a gender and customize their character; customization can include depictions of breasts, buttocks, and genitalia, as well as various sizes and combinations of genitals. Players can encounter events where they have the option to engage in sexual activities with other main characters or prostitutesthese brief sex scenes (from a first-person perspective) depict partially nude characters moaning suggestively while moving through various positions. Some scenes contain brief depictions of thrusting motions; other scenes depict a character's head moving towards a partner's crotch. The game contains frequent depictions and references to fictional drugs, including characters taking puffs/hits from a state-altering inhaler/stimulant; an animated billboard ad depicts a man snorting speed. Some sequences allow the player to drink alcoholic beverages repeatedly until the screen distorts; player's character can also drive cars while drunk. The words f**k and "c*nt" appear in the dialogue.

Ghostrunner Is The Cyberpunk Game You Should Have Played In 2020 – Game Informer

The year 2020 was a big year for the Cyberpunk genre in video games because the hotly-anticipated (and long-in-development) Cyberpunk 2077 was finally released that year. However, it wasn'tthe massive generation-defining game CD Projekt Red (and admittedly, many of us fans) propped it up to be.

I played it on Xbox Series X at release, and it ran fine enough that I could roll credits thinking I had just completed a fun game that I'm glad I played. However, getting an Xbox Series X or a PlayStation 5 around the time Cyberpunk 2077was released in 2020 was challenging, and many had to play CDPR's latest RPG on last-gen consoles.You probably already know the story of how that went it was not a good game to play on last-gen consoles at all. CDPR choosing not to give reviewers codes for those consoles ahead of time on top of the way the studio opted not to really talk about last-gen versions of Cyberpunk 2077 was deceitful, dishonest, and frankly disrespectful to consumers.

Whether you played the game on a beefy PC, a new-gen console, or endured through it on previous-gen hardware, there's a good chance the talk of the cyberpunk town that year for you was Cyberpunk 2077. It shouldn't have been because a much better cyberpunk game was released less than two months before it: Ghostrunner.

I played through some of Ghostrunner when it was released in October of 2020. Still, due to work/freelance obligations, I had to shelve it to work on, ironically enough, a massive guide project for Cyberpunk 2077. I hadn't managed to get back to Ghostrunner until this past weekend. Having read about its PlayStation 5 upgrades, which include a 60 FPS ray-tracing mode and a 120 FPS mode, I decided it was time to jump in. Two days later, I had rolled credits on not just the best cyberpunk game released in 2020 but one of my favorite games of all time.

Sure, Ghostrunner isn't a massive, sprawling RPG with dozens of hours of content. Nevertheless,it's a tight, seven-hour first-person samurai sword slasher that I already can't wait to replay one day (fortunately, I have the Project_Hel DLC released earlier this year to play through for now).

Ghostrunner is, as the name implies, about a ghostrunner who has been reactivated to take down an authoritarian leader in a devastated-by-capitalism cyberpunk metropolis. The story has twists and turns, which I won't spoil here, but at its heart, it's about a person grappling with what makes them human. Is it consciousness? Is it a heartbeat? Can you be human if most of your body is machine? Ghostrunner tackles these questions head-on, and it delivers. Mind you, it's not the deepest, most revealing story in the cyberpunk genre, but it's more than serviceable, which works because the focus on Ghostrunner is its gameplay.

Ghostrunner is like a hyper-fast Mirror's Edge meets 3D Katana Zero. If you take a single hit, you die. As you can imagine, you will die a lot. Like, so much. But, like Katana Zero, which featured the same one-hit mechanics, the game instantly reloads you back to the start of the encounter, getting you right back into the action and axing any frustration you might feel upon death. At first, you might view each combat or parkour scenario like a first-person shooter, akin to Call of Duty. "There's enemies here, so I'll attack them here," and so on. However, Ghostrunner must be treated like a puzzle to truly understand what each scenario is trying to teach you.

There is an optimal path for every encounter, but it's not the only solution, which I appreciated. You must learn how to jump around a stage,grappling to hanging hooks or grinding onto Sonic-like railsreach the enemy over here before wallrunning to the enemy over there. If you miss a beat, there's a good chance you'll take a shot and die. As such, you'll find yourself locked into a run you think could work, trying it over and over again until you find success and defeat every enemy in the room. It's exhilarating, and each time I completed a successful encounter, I felt like a parkour god. Gameplay is king in Ghostrunner, and for good reason it's some of the best in-game movement and combat out there.

What's better is that the story of Ghostrunner and its top-notch gameplay is wrapped in a bow of an incredible synthwave score and gorgeous cyberpunk visuals. If you like neon lights, you're going to love Ghostrunner.

All of this is to say that Ghostrunner is one of my favorite gaming experiences in years and absolutely the best cyberpunk game of 2020. I only wished I had played through it entirely back then instead of waiting two years to discover a game that's now one of my all-time favorites.

Netflix just dropped a new trailer for its anime series based on Cyberpunk 2077, and its more breathtaking than CD Projekt Reds action role-playing video game.

First announced way back in 2020, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a standalone 10-part anime series by CD Projekt Red, Netflix, and Studio Trigger, the anime studio behind shows like Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill. Unlike its teaser trailer, which gave us vague yet mondo cool shots of its neon-dripped cityscape, extreme close-ups of characters, and blisteringly-fast sakuga action sequences, this trailer gave us a look at the animes story.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners follows a street kid named David. After a near-death experience following a hit-and-run, David joins a crew of eccentric edgerunners looking to take down the corpos of Night City. The crew of edgerunners maintains the same quality of well-crafted character designs Trigger is known for with a touch of Cyberpunk 2077 character archetypes: youve got Maine, the imposing muscle of the group and the animes Jackie Welles equivalent, punch girl Dorio, tech-wiz Kiwi, the eccentric Pilar, the captivating femme fatale Lucy, and Rebecca, the shortstack with the short-fuse, to round out the crew.

Over the years, Studio Trigger has garnered a reputation for crafting some of animes most bombastic action sequences. While some within the anime community view the studios output as style over substance, Trigger has recently buffed its catalog with provocative world building by giving Star Wars a much-needed creative facelift with a few episodes from its Disney+ anthology series, Star Wars: Visions, and through its latest Netflix show, Brand New Animal. With Promare director Hiroyuki Imaishi behind the helm for this limited series anime, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is shaping up to be yet another accolade to add to the anime studios resume.

Cyberpunk 2077 Patch 1.4: Game Dev Highlights Issues With Ai That Need Fixing in Update – GiveMeSport

Cyberpunk 2077 is a game that has been rife with issues and glitches ever since it was released on public sale, but now an indie game developer has given his knowledge and expertise on some of the AI problems in the CD Projekt Red title.

While improvements have already been made to the game over the past year with patching, there are still glaring issues with the AAA title overall.

CD Projekt Red does seem determined to fix these issues and fully realise the title that fans have hoped for from the very beginning.

Writing on the r/CyberpunkGame subreddit u/Alamoa20, an indie game dev with experience, highlighted some of the issues across the AI in the game, and what CDPR will hopefully be looking at to rectify them.

They said: When I look at Night City's Civilians, they're obviously not finite state machines. They have behavioural trees and a path. You can see them walking, stopping at a vending machine and getting a drink, sitting down at a bench, leaning on a railing, looking at their phone, taking a smoke, a drink, a snack.

The problem is that it's incomplete. There's no "loopback", so to speak. They keep walking till they despawn or till they turn around and walk back.

The Redditor would also point out the issues with the Police AI in the game, which fans have been commenting on since the games initial release.

Police AI is no different. Them spawning behind you is so jarringly obvious, that it is insane for me to think devs saw this and thought it was okay.

They needed and wanted a system, but the one they were working on was likely NOT going to be ready by release date, so they had to work around it. A simple spawn out of the player's zone of sight. Inside a building, out in the desert.

No testing was done. Just a placeholder illusion to say Okay, the system is there, at least. It's a very watered down iteration.

Were expecting that the next update for the game will be introduced in early 2022, with CDPR having noted this year that theyre looking to release the Next-Gen versions of the game on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in the new year.

Cyberpunk 2077 Is Having Its First Good Day – Kotaku

Poor old Cyberpunk 2077. Is a phrase I never thought Id think. But here we are, just a couple of weeks away from its first year on sale (!), and I do find myself feeling odd twinges. Because goodness me, its rather popular on Steam today.

Hovering in the top half of Steams top 10 top sellers, CD Projekts beleaguered game seems to be finding new love with its current half price sale. Down to $30, rather than the incredibly optimistic $60 its laughably maintained for almost 12 months, people are jumping to get it. And, you know what, fair enough really. Because at this point the game has received literally thousands of bug fixes, patches, patches to fix previous patches, removed wetness, added even wetterness, and on the PC at least, is a functioning, enormous RPG.

On console, thats still a whole other matter. In a year that has seen CD Projekt get hacked, their source code stolen and auctioned online, they tried to bury the severity of that hack under the noise of E3, while also being taken off sale by Sony for six months, and having the extent of the crunch their developers were put under made very visible. Which perhaps could have been better received if the promised next-gen versions of the game for PS5 and XBS had appeared when promised. Which of course they didnt. And still havent.

But todaytoday theyre having a good day. As VCG reported, CDP president Adam Kiciski got all giddy and told Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita, We believe that in the long run Cyberpunk 2077 will be perceived as a very good game, and like our other titles, it will sell for years.

Meanwhile, Cyberpunks quest director, PaweSasko, rushed to Twitter in child-like joy at seeing the game get not-terrible reviews on Steam. In fact, boosted by the current sale, the game is registering Very Positive.

Noting that these reviews have arrived in the last few days, Sasko adds, You cant imagine what it means to me. Sniff.

He later added, Over 15K very positive reviews in the last days, while both #Cyberpunk2077 and #TheWitcher3 are on the global list of Steam top sellers, concluding, Thank you so much!

Forbes caught the game at the very top of Steams list earlier, although at the time of writing its being pipped by, er, Farming Simulator 22.

Eventually someones going to tap them all on the shoulder and remind them theyve got to get the game working for consoles at some point, and the sadness will all rush back in. But lets let them have this one.

CD Projekt says Cyberpunk 2077 will return to Sonys PlayStation Store on June 21st – The Verge

CD Projekt says Cyberpunk 2077 will return to Sonys PlayStation Store on June 21st, slightly more than six months after being removed. As Polygon notes, the news came in a regulatory disclosure by Cyberpunk 2077s developer, CD Projekt Reds parent company, saying Sony had agreed to reinstate the game.

A CD Projekt Red spokesperson declined further comment about Cyberpunk 2077s return, including what potential bug fixes or other updates the new version offers. In a statement to Polygon, Sony confirmed the news but said that it still doesnt recommend playing the game on PlayStation 4. Users will continue to experience performance issues with the PS4 edition while CD Projekt Red continues to improve stability across all platforms. [Sony Interactive Entertainment] recommends playing the title on PS4 Pro or PS5 for the best experience, a spokesperson said.

CD Projekt executives have said they frequently updated Sony on fixes for Cyberpunk 2077s myriad bugs and performance issues since the game was pulled from the store on December 17th, 2020. The studio has released numerous patches for its console, PC, and Google Stadia editions; in late May, joint CEO Adam Kiciski told investors thered been visible progress on stabilizing the game. But Kiciski said Sony would have to make the final call.

Cyberpunk 2077 was released in December to strong sales but severe technical problems. The game struggled to run on last-generation Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles, and players faced numerous (and frequently hilarious) bugs on every platform. Microsoft and Sony both offered refunds for the game, and Microsoft added a warning label for Xbox One owners on its Xbox store. Sony took the more drastic step of pulling Cyberpunk 2077 from its PlayStation Store entirely. Console owners could still buy physical discs, but CD Projekt has said that the digital versions absence may have slowed down sales on Xbox and PC as well as PlayStation.

CD Projekt Red spent nearly a decade designing Cyberpunk 2077, and it calls the game a long-term investment that it can sell for years to come. The studio has backed away from plans for a standalone multiplayer mode, saying it would focus on adding online features to all its games instead. But its promised downloadable content for Cyberpunk 2077s single-player campaign, plus a major upgrade for new consoles including the PlayStation 5 in the second half of this year.

Cyberpunk 2077 developer says its hacked data is circulating online – The Verge

Hacked data stolen from CD Projekt is circulating online, the company says. The studio behind Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 says it can not confirm the exact contents of the data being circulated, but believes it relates to its games, contractors, and both current and former employees. It also warned that the data may have been manipulated or tampered with.

The disclosure comes four months after the studio first announced that it had fallen victim to a ransomware attack. It initially said hackers had managed to access certain data from the company. CD Projekt posted the ransom note it received in which the hackers claimed to have access to source code from its games including Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3, and Gwent. The note also said the hacked data included details relating to its HR, accounting, and other internal operations.

The company said it would not give in to the hackers demands, and days later the attackers claimed to have sold the data online. However the nature of the sale, in which the hackers claimed to have found a buyer outside of a hacking forum auction, raised questions about whether they were able to find a buyer at all. Writing in a blog post, Emsisoft threat analyst Brett Callow said he thought it was likely that the hackers were just claiming to have found a buyer to save face after having failed to monetize the hack.

CD Projekt has previously admitted that hackers were able to encrypt some of its employee data on its network. But the company said its investigation had found no evidence that the data had been transferred out of the companys systems.

The hack followed the troubled launch of the studios latest blockbuster title, Cyberpunk 2077. Although it sold well and was initially well-received by critics, players quickly discovered that the game was riddled with bugs, and almost unplayable on older consoles. The situation was so bad that the game was pulled from the PlayStation Store. As of this writing, it is yet to return.

CD Projekt says its continuing to work with law enforcement and outside experts as it responds to the hack, and said it is committed and prepared to take action against anyone sharing the stolen data.

Cyberpunk RPG The Ascent coming to Game Pass at launch in July – Rock Paper Shotgun

Cyberpunk action RPG The Ascent is queued up to launch next month and it's just popped up with a fresh trailer. Developers Neon Giant have let on an extra quick look at some more co-op cyberpunk shoot 'em upping here in the new video. Good news for the subscription service fans as well. The Ascent has announced that it will be joining Xbox Game Pass for PC on its launch day in July.

You'll play as a worker for The Ascent Group which unexpectedly shuts down, threatening the survival of your corpo-owned distrct. It'll be up to you, RPG hero, to grab your cyberpunk guns and figure out why. The Ascent kicked off a new running and gunning cyberpunk-y trailer during Microsoft's E3 showcase. You can catch the explosions and co-op hijinx right here.

Ed got the chance to play The Ascent just last month. He was impressed by its rusty, seedy cyberpunk world but was a little disappointed that the combat wasn't equally messy and loud.

"In many ways, it was a lot more controlled than I was expecting. I mixed and matched between a revolver, assault rifle, submachine gun, and shotgun, all of which felt punchy, sure, but a bit too grounded for me," Ed explains, but also adds a moment from a later fight. "That's maybe a bit harsh, because in its best moments The Ascent is wild. I fought against these two big baddies with hammers and tremor attacks I had to dodge roll to avoid, finally introducing something other than bullets!"

The new trailer up top there does include some explosions and lasers and some area of effect stuff so perhaps The Ascent saved its best tricks for launch day.

You can find the Ascent over on Steam where it will launch on July 29th. It will be on 10% discount through August 5th. It'll also be coming to Game Pass on PC, console, and cloud on its launch day.

Cyberpunk 2077 releases a song that rhymes ‘Keanu Reeves’ with ‘Sleeve’ – PC Gamer

"Even in the dystopian future, hard rap lives on." So says EI-P, one half of hiphop group Run the Jewels, and he somehow manages to do so with a straight face. When Cyberpunk 2077 definitely releases on December 10, it will do so with an all-star OST including Grimes, A$AP Rocky, and Gazelle Twin (a stagename that sounds like an unused Metal Gear Solid boss.)

Today CDPR released Run the Jewels' composition, which Killer Mike quaintly describes thus: "we wanna provide you with the soundtrack to fucking shit up."

Those of us with ears will note the Keanu reference. "Cyberpunk holding a pump, Keanu Reeves, cyberarm under my sleeve. I'll blast 'em all, watch 'em fall like Autumn leaves." Well, quite.

I've listened a few times now, it's alright. Other opinions include 'lit', 'banger', and a series of fire emojis.

CD Projekt Red first revealed Cyberpunk 2077 in 2012. They first announced its release date to be April 2020. However, its been delayed over and over again. So what is the actual release date?

CD Projekt Red started working on Cyberpunk 2077 when they finished Witcher 3s final expansion. While Witcher 3 has been the teams biggest project until then, they decided to put in more people and resources to work on this new game.

Theyre using a new game engine to construct the game. Dubbed the REDengine 4, its a new iteration of the one they used for Witcher 3. The team received incentives from the Polish government to work on this game, amounting $7 million. All of these details point to Cyberpunk 2077 being this really big, gigantic project, increasing fan interest about the game.

Cyberpunk 2077 will also usher in the new generation of graphical fidelity. CD Projekt Red partnered with Nvidia to achieve real-time ray-tracing in the game.

Content for the game were nearly complete by mid-2019. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, staff developers were forced to work from home starting March 2020. At this point, they were only polishing the game and performing quality testing and assurance. The unexpected shift from office to work from home forced the developers to still enter crunch time, in spite of vowing not to a year prior.

CD Projekt Red initially announced that the game will be released on April 16, 2020. However, the coronavirus pandemic slowed down the production cycle, leading to an announcement that the game will have to be delayed to September 17. That date has come and gone, and CD Projekt Red yet again moves the release date to November 19.

Just last week, CD Projekt Red once again announced a delay to the game, citing quality issues.

The multiple delays have led to some to disbelieve the December 10 release date.

The rumor was denied by CD Projekt Red, claiming that they are just finalizing assets to reflect the December 10 release date.

So there we go, folks. Until further notice, Cyberpunk 2077 releases on December 10, 2020 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Cyberpunk RED retains its far-flung, bombastic future where cybernetic limbs are common, and gangs rule the streets - but the world-changing event has altered almost everything players might remember from Cyberpunk 2020.

A distinct feeling of poverty now runs through the streets of Night City, and a player might struggle to get their hands on a new weapon, or Agent (a sentient cell phone/PDA in your pocket), or some clean vegetables.

This, really, is a fantastic starting point for players, as they are forced to build their characters from the ground up, with a massive focus on creating what their identity is, and what they want to achieve in the forthcoming game.

The original line-up of Cyberpunk 2020's Roles (classes) is still present - however Cops have now changed to Lawmen.

The Roles function, fundamentally, the same as they did in Cyberpunk 2020. Each one has a massive pool of abilities they can put skill point in to, with a special Role Ability which differentiates them from one another.

The Role Abilities listed in the book are detailed, and well thought out, but some stand out more than others.

While Medias can create rumours and news to change the landscape of the game, Lawmen can call for backup from their local police force.

The biggest difference about these special abilities is that they can now be upgraded, creating opportunities in which an Exec can call forth a team of underlings to fight their battles for them, while relaxing in their skyline penthouse.

This short ad for action-RPG Cyberpunk 2077 is part of a huge promotional campaign that almost exclusively teases the violent and salacious pleasures of the games imagined future. Sure, developer CD Projekt Red has also mentioned the deprivation and exploitation players will encounter in Night City, but the overriding tone of its buildup is a celebration of the criminal opportunity and hedonistic heights enabled by cybernetic modification. Dystopia is an entrepreneurs playground, and cyberpunk the genre that lends the game its name is the ultimate venue.

In these ads, todays cyberpunk looks like a glossy reprint of its 1980s heyday, luring us to party in neon sights and synth sounds while barely recalling that they once framed terrifying alternate realities. But cyberpunk isnt one thing. Its also about the moment exploring how classic themes have renewed relevance in the political present, marshaling the prophetic power of dystopian dreams in new directions. Cyberpunk is caught between past and future.

Sherryl Vint, Professor of Science Fiction Media Studies at the University of California, Riverside, explains that defining cyberpunk is not straightforward. It can be a setting, a set of iconic images, an aesthetic style, or a group of typical themes. Like film noir, also easy to recognize but difficult to define, it is all of these things in shifting combinations, a fuzzy set that changes with time and context, Vint tells SYFY WIRE.

Nowhere is this clearer than in video games, which right now are embracing cyberpunk more than ever. In Cyberpunk 2077s long shadow are dozens of recent and forthcoming titles spanning all kinds of play experiences. Many dont merely touch on cyberpunk themes, they explicitly refer to themselves as cyberpunk, have evocative names like Cloudpunk and Neon Abyss, or recreate classic cyberpunk imagery.

Like 2077, much of this new wave of cyberpunk games departs from familiar touchstones, referencing Blade Runner, Neuromancer, or The Matrix, and focusing on shady corporations, street gangs, and hackers, body modifications, and outlandish '80s fashions. While their narratives return to common issues related to social degradation and extreme technologies.

Take the recently released Ghostrunner, a slick, first-person-perspective action game set in a grim cyberpunk setting. Polish developer One More Levels narrative designer, Jan Gsior, tells us that the game exemplifies many of cyberpunks definitive features. A metropolis illuminated by neons, omnipresent augmentations, and implants, the oppressed rebelling against authority, incomprehensible virtual reality, transhumanism its all there, he says.

The two essential cyberpunk themes in the game he says are defiance, or the struggle of the underdog, and this transhumanism, which asks existential questions about the nature of consciousness and the ontological status of AI. For Gsior, its crucial that cyberpunk asks these questionswithout providing clear answers.

Other cyberpunk games approach similar ideas through very different play experiences. The forthcoming Chinatown Detective Agency, for example, is a story-led investigative drama with intertwining subplots, characters, and events. Mark Fillon, creative director of Singapore-based General Interactive Co., tells us that they dont refer to the game as cyberpunk themselves, but its hard to escape the label.

The game is set in a future where advancements in AI and automation play heavily into its storyline and backdrop, he says. He adds that hes especially interested in the social themes of cyberpunk, such as the unbridgeable and expanding rift between the social classes, the commodification of human lives, the emergence of an Epicurean and hedonistic lifestyle amid a crumbling world all these occurring in a time of technological renaissance.

These social themes and the concept of defiance recur in Solace State, a 3D visual novel about a young hacker named Chloe living in a biotech surveillance society. Solace States city looks less typically cyberpunk, at least initially, but the subject matter around it is familiar. Tanya Kan, director of Torontos Vivid Foundry studio, tells us that the game focuses on entrenched power structures, including a conglomerate, looking to seize control over a biotech revolution. Its narrative then considers the possibility of overcoming such structures from the below.

Cyberpunk centralizes speaking truth to power and finding alternative ways of finding humanity again in the underclasses, Kan explains. Many cyberpunk protagonists start off as outsiders, or in transit, or are siloed off from society in some way, and Solace States Chloe and other characters fit these subjectivities.

Many of these themes are cyberpunk staples, of course, and the danger even when deep-diving into battles against oppressive corporate power, or the intersections between humanity and technology, is one of retreading old ground. Especially when these games employ the romanticized 1980s and 1990s aesthetics of rain-soaked, near-future cities, could the motivation behind these contemporary cyberpunk fictions be primarily nostalgic?

Interest in cyberpunk now, Vint explains, like a lot of popular culture, is nostalgic in a commonplace way. People who were in their teens in the 1980s have now aged such that many occupy positions of power in creative industries. It is unsurprising that this generation would be drawn to make culture that looks back on the formative years of their own lives and experiences. So, she continues, the cyberpunk aesthetic in some recent popular culture seems to me to be about style more than content, about the cool vibe associated with the genre rather than a return to the themes pursued by original cyberpunk authors.

Some theorists of cyberpunk have also noted that the "retrofuturism"of backward-looking sci-fi worlds is inherently conservative. It creates a sense of stasis, as if the aim were to return to a time when things were more simple, rather than imagine anything genuinely new. In particular, cyberpunk can seem in-tune with a 1980s culture of neoliberal individualism and hyper-competitiveness, in which hackers and gangs seek personal enrichment and accept that no social alternative is possible. As Mike Pondsmith, creator of the Cyberpunk tabletop RPG series and co-creator of Cyberpunk 2077 has said, Cyberpunk isnt about saving humanity, its about saving yourself.

But nostalgia doesnt fully explain the current cyberpunk explosion in games, and it would be unreasonable to assume that these titles cant equally resonate with the present, in more progressive ways. Indeed, referring back to '80s cyberpunk can also reveal a continuity between current and historical problems, not least the continuing inequality and corporate dominance in neoliberal orders.

Neoliberalism was becoming mainstream in the 1980s, due to [Margaret] Thatcher and [Ronald] Reagan, predominantly, Vintsays.Original cyberpunk authors saw this and reacted to it. Now we live in a world where neoliberalism is hegemonic and so the playbook put into use in the 1980s is largely responsible for the world we live in today.

Both in terms of todays digital technology and social composition, theres an increasing sense, in fact, that cyberpunk is now actually the way things are. We are living in a cyberpunk reality, Fillon says. Technology is advancing at an incredible (and some would say alarming) rate, but through the lens of humanity, we arent making much progress.

Kan shares similar concerns and aims to address them through her game. Without a doubt, she says, with the increasing subversion of rights and untrammeled despotism experienced today, Solace States cyberpunk has relevance in highlighting not merely guns and trade, but also in politicking, the role of the media, and the power of the citizens.

Current technologies also send cyberpunk in directions that werent foreseeable. So, Vint explains, cyberpunk in the past never really predicted the monetization of online communities and the algorithm-driven polarization of online culture. For example, she says, although cyberpunk imaged elements of the bleak future associated with imagery of corporate rule and embodied precarity, it missed thinking about how some parts of online gaming culture have fostered the misogyny we saw emerge with Gamergate. She adds that this is not cyberpunks fault: its just the inevitable result of material culture unfolding in ways that were not anticipated.

The insights of todays cyberpunk are thus bound to be different because they emerge from changing social states. Cyberpunk game developers interested in more than nostalgia reconfigure what cyberpunk means as they revive it, touching on issues that matter right now. And that flexibility is as much a part of cyberpunk as any neon-lit urban sprawl or cybernetic implant.

Solace States contemporary political message, for instance, builds on a feminist cyberpunk tradition. Another sci-fi scholar, Lisa Yaszek, has written that waves of feminist cyberpunk have tended to reject the alienation, isolation, and nihilism typically associated with masculinist cyberpunk and replace it with an emphasis on creative self-expression, community, and sociopolitical change. They focus more on activism, in relation to issues of class disparity, technological exploitation, and ecological preservation.

What sets Solace State apart from other cyberpunk titles is focusing on the counter-cultural intimacy of relationship-building and community-building arising against influential powers that are trying to dismantle rights, governance, and humanity without consultation," Kan says.

She explains that Solace States story has involved consultation with activists, politicians, cultural consultants, and academics, and notes that immigrant voices are crucial for their unique vantage points on failing institutions and alternative social visions. This is why a truly diverse cyberpunk story is especially relevant in our increasingly divisive world, she tells us.

Chinatown Detective Agency offers something different with its future Singapore setting, rather than the usual American, Japanese, or fictional metropolises we see in cyberpunk. But its also interested in current global politics and social issues in a state of high-tech chaos.

The geopolitical turmoil and the reimagining of the self has caused great disunity, Fillon says, but in the background, we see technology totally changing our lives. There are still countless people dying of hunger in a world of plenty, wars, rampant corruption, and the continuing segregation of civilization into social classes. These inequalities and uncertainties feed into the game.

Ghostrunner takes a slightly different approach to its social setup, in that in its world mega-corporations have given way to an authoritarian state regime, leaving everyone fighting for survival. According to Gsior, this isnt meant as a statement about the present political situation. Instead, he says, the story and the setting illustrate aspects of the human condition that are present in the contemporary political narrative, but the fact is they have been around forever. Greed, lust for power, inequality, oppression, have always been relevant problems, no matter the level of technological advancement.

Yet Ghostrunner is still, as Gsior says, a game about defying an oppressive power, and its hard to ignore its parallels with existing political realities. We live in a time when capitalism is increasingly supported by hardline state powers, which do everything they can to turn economic or class struggles into culture wars. In this sense at least, Ghostrunners premise feels intriguingly relevant.

Perhaps more than anything, these games and many others embody the schism within cyberpunk itself. Its nostalgic reveries intertwine with unrealized promises of changing technology and the inescapable influence of existing social injustices. Like a cyborg melding of nature and computerized modifications, its a combination of contrasts that can pull in different directions, or combine into a powerful whole.

Some modern cyberpunk is living in the past, then, but its current popularity in games says as much about the importance of cyberpunk themes to understanding the present. And as digital technologies evolve further, there will be many more cyberpunk tales for games to tell, especially by indie developers experimenting with more left-field ideas. Hopefully, the industrys own corporate behemoth, Cyberpunk 2077, will expand from the history of the genre in fascinating new ways, not merely seize it (or set it on fire).

For a game that isn't out yet, Cyberpunk 2077 sure has a lot of merchandise. As well as the usual stuff like headphones and apparel, we're also seeing big companies like OnePlus and Adidas teaming up with CDPR to get a slice of this lucrative cyberpie. Here are just a few examples of objects churned out by this relentless merchandising machine. I'm not saying you should buy this stuff. In almost every case you probably shouldn't. But it's interesting to see the cultural reach this game has developed over the years.

Disclaimer: Some of these products are not real. I made them up. But can you guess which ones? CAN YOU?

Adidas is the latest megacorp to jump into bed with CDPR. They've collaborated on a shoe, the X9000L4, whichas far as videogame themed sneakers goisn't completely hideous. But with limited availability outside of select Asian countries, they won't be easy to come by. This isn't Adidas's first videogame rodeo. Back in 2007 it collaborated with Microsoft on a Halo 3 shoe and the results were, uh well, see for yourself.

This special Cyberpunk edition of the OnePlus 8T has a unique futuristic design and, dare I say it, actually looks pretty cool. The yellow accents are tasteful, and the giant camera module has an almost retro-fitted look to it, reminding me of the design of some of the game's cars. It's a decent phone, with a 120Hz display and, based on reviews I've read, really fast charging. But pre-orders are currently only available in China, so getting your hands on one might be tricky.

Encompassing the latest in brick technology, this limited edition Cyberpunk 2077 house brick will give a futuristic edge to any construction project. Imagine it: a semi-detached suburban house built entirely from these stylish bricks. Visitors will marvel at the Cyberpunk 2077 logo repeated across the exterior of your house. Neighbours will tremble with envy. And everyone will know just how much you love dystopian open-world RPGs.

You can't actually buy this, so it's not really merch, but I'm including it anyway. In the game, the car of choice for Johnny 'Keanu Reeves' Silverhand is a modified 1977 Porsche 911 Turbo, which has been recreated in real life. It's painted in silver (obviously) and has the Samurai logo slapped on the back, as well as other subtle futuristic touches. It's currently on display at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, but I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being sold at some point. Then maybe it can be yours.

Picture the scene: you're a cool cyberpunk with a mohawk, using a neural implant to hack into a megacorporation's mainframe. But damn! You screw up and the alarm sounds. You run away, guns blazing, chased by evil cyberbastardsand then your trousers fall down. Avoid this embarrassing situation by investing in this official Cyberpunk 2077 belt, which features the emblem of the 'chrome rock' band Samurai.

Cyberpunks don't sit down much, what with all the car chases, hacking, infiltration, and stabbing people with retractable arm-blades. But if they ever did sit down, they'd probably sit down on something like this. I know people love these chairs, and this is probably a high quality product, but man, I would never have one in my house. I think a chair should blend into its surroundings, not constantly alert you to its presence.

Even jigsaw makers are getting in on the Cyberpunk 2077 action. This officially licensed puzzle has 1000 pieces, and comes bundled with a tote bag and a poster. I don't really have anything clever to say about this. If you're into puzzles, it seems like a good one, and I dig the image of V chilling out on a futuristic subway train. I also like the slightly weird contrast of a cutting edge videogame like Cyberpunk 2077 with a form of entertainment, the humble jigsaw, that has been around since at least 1760.

Even cyberpunks need hot water. When you're chilling back at your stylish Night City penthouse after a mission, you'll probably want to relax with a hot mug of cybertea. And that's where this Cyberpunk 2077 kettle comes in. Quite simply, it boils water. But thanks to the Samurai emblem badly Photosho I mean, printed on the side, it boils water with style. You can imagine Johnny Silverhand himself heating up water in this, brewing up a lovely mug of tea before skidding off on his motorcycle.

If you're really, really besotted with Cyberpunk 2077, and you have $300 burning a hole in your neon parachute pants, you could always spend it on this hand-painted model. It depicts the game's Trauma Teamemergency medics who operate like a SWAT squadand there's a nice amount of detail on it. But $300 worth of detail? I'm not so sure. However, figures and models, like sneakers, are some of the most inexplicably expensive items on the planet, so the price of this isn't that surprising really.

Peripheral manufacturers have been slapping videogame logos on headphones for years, so it was inevitable they would get in on the Cyberpunk action too. These ones are by SteelSeries and feature a design inspired by the game's netrunner ability. I like how they've incorporated the distinctive blue and yellow from the game's logo on the mic attachment, and SteelSeries' Arctis headsets are generally pretty good.

This ain't no ordinary egg. This is a Cyberpunk 2077 egg. Based on one Johnny Silverhand once used to cook an omelette, this egg takes breakfast to the next level. Fried eggs. Scrambled eggs. Poached eggs. Boiled eggs. You name it, you can make it with the Cyberpunk 2077 eggas long as it contains egg and nothing else. But act fast, because only a dozen were laid, and once they're gone, they're gone.

"Cyberpunk 2077's" delay was not taken kindly by fans as the game's promotion has launched it to one of the most awaited games this 2020. Since the initial trailer came out starring Keanu Reeves and showing players a glimpse of exactly what to expect, those expectations have since then been rising through the roof.

"Cyberpunk 2077" has promoted itself through the use of merch and other marketing tactics throughout the year. An article written by PCgamer begs to ask the question, just how much merch would result in too much merch? The article's title suggests that if a certain thing exists, there is already probably a "Cyberpunk 2077" theme backed up by the many merchandise all following the game.

The article then elaborates that for a particular game that has not even been released and has been delayed countless times, "Cyberpunk 2077" pretty much has quite a lot of merch. These merch revolve around certain typical things like headphones as well as apparel. Even big companies like Adidas and OnePlus have already teamed up with CDPR in order to get a chunk of this lucrative cyberpie.

There could also be a connection with regards to the backfire from fans when the game was pushed yet again and only announced on the supposed release date paired up with massive marketing that "Cyberpunk 2077" has been able to accomplish this 2020. Although nobody expected COVID-19, the news that "Cyberpunk 2077" has been delayed countless times over could possibly be a little too much for fans and many of them could even lose interest.

According to Elon Musk's reply to a Tweet saying that the existing "Cyberpunk 2077" merch is definitely going out of control, the Tesla CEO stated that he even hopes that the game does not eventually twist itself to tedium due to the fear of eventually being canceled. This could be interpreted as Elon Musk being one of the many gamers awaiting the final release of the game which although a final release date has been announced, has still been deemed as skeptical for some fans.

"Cyberpunk 2077's" popularity and uneasy fans have put a lot of pressure on the game to make up for the constant delays. The pressure grows even bigger as Elon Musk himself is also hoping that the delay does not affect the game in any way.

The only particular way to know if the game is worth it would be to try it out upon release which, however, might still take a little bit more time. Would fans still buy more "Cyberpunk 2077" merch before the launch despite the delay?

Run the Jewels have taken to their social media to make a huge announcement. If you're a fan of the hip-hop duo and the sci-fi video game epic 'Cyberpunk 2077', mark your calendars for November 12, as Run the Jewels are set to release a new single.

Titled 'No Save Point', the song will feature on the highly-anticipated video game 'Cyberpunk 2077' by CD Projekt Red, the team behind 'The Witcher' popular game series.

"Tomorrow RTJ enters Night City with 'No Save Point' @cyberpunkgame," Run the Jewels wrote on Instagram on November 11, along with colorful cover art. In the artwork, the rappers are seen guns blazing from their BuickGrand National and racing through a dense market location in Night City, the fictional city in the game based on the Free State of Northern California.

The artwork was designed by Toronto-based illustrator Mad Dog Jones. Run the Jewels also made the announcement on Twitter. Check out their post below.

Fans went into a frenzy and have been quick to share their excitement. "Perfect fit for that game," said a fan on Instagram while another wrote, "I can hear it right now." One fan said of the cover art, "Please make this a shirt!"

'No Save Point' will follow the duo's single 'JU$T' which features Pharrell Williams and Zack de la Rocha and appears on their latest studio album 'RTJ4'. Run the Jewels surprise-released the album back in July and have still been making headlines since its release.

If you haven't been introduced to the game by now, it's time to get on the news, as 'Cyberpunk 2077' is expected to be the biggest video game release in the past decade, if not all time. It will feature a starring role by Keanu Reeves and is created large-scale in a massive and immersive open-world action RPG environment.

Several gaming companies have had to adjust their new projects' release dates according to that of the upcoming CD Project Red AAA title. Although, its release date has been pushed back several times and its latest delay has left fans frustrated.Nevertheless, it's refreshing to see the game's latest news update is a new Run the Jewels song and we can't wait to hear it.

BMW’s Cyberpunk Motorrad Definition CE 04 Concept Is Here to Drag Scooters Into the Future – The Drive

Unless you're into retro-cool Vespas, scooter design can be a bit lacking. Let's face it, the ride-sharing Revels are really just things city folks tip over because we have no cows. Finally, BMW wants to bring urban two-wheelin' into the future with an electric concept that looks like it's straight out of a cyberpunk anime: the Motorrad Definition CE 04.

It's everything most electric scooters aren't: angular, long and low. The rear of the scooter was left uncovered to both show off the machinery powering it and give off serious sci-fi vibes. The pearly white exterior is a nice contrast with the matte black mechanical bits, too.

Most importantly, the Motorrad Definition CE 04 sounds like a delightfully functional vehicle. The drivetrain is very compact and the flat battery is mounted in the bottom of the scooter, allowing for a low center of gravity that should be easier to ride and tons of storage up top. Its illuminated under-seat storage area has a door that opens up horizontally and enough room to stash a helmet.

Details are scarce as it's not a production vehicle, but it was designed first and foremost for city commuters, who BMW says ride about 7.5 miles a day or less. The "floating" bench seat was designed for more leg room even for taller riders, and it features a 10.25-inch screen that's designed to be connected to a smartphone. That screen would be the biggest ever on a scooter if the Motorrad Definition CE 04 ever goes into production.

BMW even designed a trick new parka to go with the Motorrad Definition CE 04 with light guides on the sleeves and hood for better visibilty and an inside pocket with an inductive charging field for a smartphone. The wearer can turn on and even change the color of the parka's lights from inside its sleeve.

All we have to say is...build it. As The Verge notes, the Motorrad Definition CE 04 looks to be a futuristic step up from its 2014 C Evolution electric scooter, which featured a top speed of 80 mph and an impressive 99 miles of range. It was a pricey scooter then, though, and didn't look as cool. If there was ever a time where we need a more affordable electric scooter that matches the dystopian mood in the room, it's now.

Adidas unveils Cyberpunk 2077 shoes and they look grittily cool – GEEKSPIN

The highly anticipated release of Cyberpunk 2077 is just a month away, so collaborations promoting the video game have started to roll out. One of the exciting collabs is a shoe line from Adidas and CD Projekt Red, which is the developer and publisher of the video game.

Officially revealed last week, the collection is comprised of X9000L4 and X90004D sneakers that incorporate the typeface and color schemes seen in the teasers for Cyberpunk 2077. The X90004D features a black Primeknit upper with yellow CYBERPUNK logo, laces, and heel counter lettering.

The X9000L4, meanwhile, comes in four different colors: gray, black, white, and a leopard pattern. Each of these silhouettes has its own flashy accents ranging from turquoise, red, gold, purple, and silver.

Reactions to the shoe line are mixed. While some sneakerheads think the designs of the shoes capture the cool grit of Night City (the setting of the video game), others find them unappealing. Apparently, the pricing is also an issue for some fans. For $200 Id never wear them, commented one Twitter user on a tweet by Hypebeast about the collection.

The shoe line doesnt have an official release date yet, but many are expecting a November 11th launch with prices ranging from $190 to $250. Unfortunately for some fans, CD Projekt RED business relations director Rafal Jaki revealed that the sneakers will not be available worldwide.

As Im getting a lot of questions about this the Adidas X Cyberpunk 2077 Collab is available in selected Asian markets only. As a partner we dont make the distribution decisions as that is Adidas core competence, Jaki wrote tweeted, along with some pictures of the sneakers and characters from the video game.

Cyberpunk 2077 is scheduled to be released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on December 10th.
