Comets' Final Visit Was Special

April 29, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets At first glance, Anna looks like your average 8th grader. A 14-year old from New Hartford, New York, Anna is a competitive member of the Notre Dame softball team and dedicated student. What Anna has experienced in the last few weeks, however, is far from average.

Last summer, Anna's family brought her to the doctor after she complained of nausea. After receiving a head injury during basketball practice in December of 2013, Anna's parents brought her to the emergency room. As her symptoms seemed to improve, she did not get a CT scan and went on with her life. In March, her vision seemed to decline, and headaches became more prominent. Anna went to an eye specialist who spotted some fluid in her optic disk; she headed in for a stat MRI.

That's when Anna and her family received some devastating news. On Friday, March 14th, the doctors told Anna that she had a brain tumor and needed emergency surgery.

About two weeks after a successful surgery that removed the entirety of Anna's brain tumor, she and her family received a wonderful visit. Comets players Frank Corrado, Brandon DeFazio, Patrick Kennedy, Darren Archibald, Cal O'Reilly, Kellan Lain and Ray Kaunisto surprised Anna at her house while she recovered from the surgery. An avid Comets fan, Anna was shocked and elated to see some of her idols on the ice sitting on her sofa, chatting with her about her experience and her daily life. Most people cannot even imagine what Anna went through, especially as a 14-year old, and the Comets players did not hesitate to make her recovery that much more special.

While Anna still has a lot of recovery time ahead of her, her spirits are high and her prognosis is promising. While she still needs therapy three times a week and has some trouble balancing, she was all smiles as she met her favorite Comets player, Frank Corrado.

"I felt like I was dreaming and I had to look twice," Anna exclaimed. "I couldn't believe the Utica Comets were at my front door! Not only are they my favorite hockey players but the nicest guys and I cant tell them how much everything has meant to me."

"It was great to visit Anna," Corrado explained. "She is stronger and braver than I can ever imagine."

Moved by his visit with her, Corrado made it a point to make sure Anna felt special. At the Comets game on April 18th, he presented her with a game used autograph stick after the game, which brought tears to Anna's eyes. The emotion in the room was tangible, and everyone around Anna could feel her appreciation and Corrado's thoughtfulness.

With summer on the horizon, it is important not to forget the impact that the Comets players had both on and off of the ice. They were able to brighten Anna's day, as well as the days and lives of many others in the Utica area, during the crucial last games of the season. It is undeniable that next season, we will experience more Comets in our community helping out those who need it.

And, with Anna present at the last two games of the season (both wins), she has become a good luck charm for the Comets. When asked if we will see her at games next fall, a smile broke out across her and her family's faces as she said, "Of course."

Crater baseball coach says Comets are worthy of their OSAA No. 1 ranking in Class 6A

The OSAA rankings say Crater of Central Point is the states top Class 6A program this spring, meaning at a minimum, the Comets must be state title contenders, right?

You wont get an argument from Crater coach Jay Campbell.

Crater Comets (OSAA)

Yeah, I think so, Campbell said. I have 10 seniors and we have played a lot of baseball over the past couple years. We have the make up. We just dont have one or two guys. Were 10 to 11 guys who are solid baseball players.

Crater, No. 4 in the coaches poll, proved its mettle Saturday when it swept a doubleheader from North Medford, currently No. 2 in the OSAA and coaches rankings. Most impressive was the Comets 8-7 15-inning win in the nightcap. Crater (13-4) rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, eighth and 11th innings to stay alive, then won it in the 15th on Taylor Tibbets single.

Thats type of kids they are, pretty resilient, Campbell said.

In 2013, Crater won two state playoff games before losing 2-1 to eventual 6A champion Sheldon in the quarterfinals. From that team, the Comets return seven starters. Last summer, Crater won the state and regional American Legion Class A tournament.

Tibbets, who has his six home runs this season, leads Craters offense that Campbell says doesnt have a weak bat in the lineup. The Comets also have a formidable pitching staff, led by seniors Nolan Bastendorff and Ty Fox and junior Dylan Pearce. Crater has given up two runs or fewer in 11 of its 17 games this spring.

Enforcers get Junior League title

Wednesday, April 30, 2014

The Enforcers, who also topped the double-round robin regular season with their 9-1 record, got the methodical win, as they registered six earned runs and utilized their pitchers to hold off the Comets batters.

Kier Agda, Virgil Secharmidal, and Ethan Babauta pitched for the Enforcers and combined for only three hitters and gave up no earned run in seven innings to help their team clinch the championship and foil the Comets bid for another upset. The third-seeded Comets, who incidentally handed the Enforcers their lone loss in the season after pulling off a 7-6 win in a classic 19-inning game, marched into the finals after stunning the second-ranked Falcons in the semis, 9-5.

In the finals, the Comets got into the board early, as their first two batters Vincent Keremius and Lorenzo Sebaklim reached home at the top of the first off Agdas pitching error and an Enforcers booboo at third base, respectively. Agda then settled down at the mound and got his first strike against third batter Austin Indalecio and the Enforcers starting pitcher later stranded runners at third and second after earning his second strikeout for the third out. The Comets were earlier called for the second out on a 5-3 putout play.

The Enforcers also lit up the scoreboard in the first inning, which ended in a deadlock, 2-all, after Secharmidal led off for the team and made it home off a Comets error at left field and a passed ball drove Agda home The game remained in a deadlock after two complete innings with Secharmidal stranding two Comets runners and getting two more strikeouts after relieving Agda early in the second inning. Secharmidal was then called for a hit by pitch at the start of the top of the third and leadoff batter Aurel Mendiola went to reach home after another mistake from the former to put the Comets back into the drivers seat, 3-2.

However, the Comets quickly lost the upper hand at the bottom third, as the Enforcers racked up four runs. Babauta hit an RBI double, Shakobe Rangamar drilled an RBI single, and Garnet Martin lasted a two-run single to help the Enforcers turn the tables on the Comets, 6-3.

The Enforcers never looked back from thereon, as Secharmidal found his rhythm in the next two innings after an early struggle in the third. He picked up two ground balls in the fourth inning and threw to first base for two outs and the Comets were done after only three batters, as Sebaklim returned to the dugout after a 5-3 putout play.

In the fifth inning, Secharmidal started a big defensive stop for Enforcers, as he got hold off a short shot from Kobe Santos and threw to second base to tag out Mendiola. The Comets were then charged with a double play, as second baseman Travis Camacho threw to first baseman Ton Muna, who beat Santos for the third out and stranded a runner at third. Muna earlier caught a fly ball for the first out.

After failing to score in the fourth and fifth, the Comets got their fourth and final run at the top of the sixth inning off an Enforcers error at shortstop, however the Enforcers countered with two runs at the bottom sixth to keep their distance. Babauta got another double, which brought Nathan Nogis home at the bottom of the sixth. Nogis earlier had a bunt that helped Secharmidal reach home.

Holding a four-run lead, going into the top of the last inning, the Enforcers turned to Babauta to close the game. He started his pitching chores by walking Indalecio, who was eventually beaten to second, while second batter Austin Hocog was tagged out at third. Mendiola batted third, walked to first, stole second, while fourth batter Santos also had a walk. With runners on first and second and two outs, Babauta faced fifth batter Franco Masga, who hit a grounder. Babauta then stepped into the play, picked up the ball, and threw to Muna for the third out and the Enforcers title-clinching victory.

'Comets' to lead green charge in Philippines

The ubiquitous jeepney - the linchpin of the public transport system in the Philippines since the late 1940s - may soon be a thing of the past, replaced by a "Comet".

Made by US-based electric vehicle specialist Pangea Motors, the "Comet" - short for "City Optimised Managed Electric Transport" - is a 22-passenger shuttle that runs on lithium ion batteries. On a full charge, it can cover up to 100km at a top speed of 60kmh. Its battery can be topped up on a 220-volt outlet in less than five hours.

The electric van with its zero-carbon emission, however, is just half the story.

Global Electric Transportation (GET), a global partnership set up by Pangea which is marketing the van, plans to roll out 25,000 Comets in the next five years from an assembly plant it is building south of Manila. It is set to deploy the first 30 Comets - imported from Pangea's factory in Vancouver, Washington state - next month.

Pasang Masda, one of the Philippines' biggest transport groups, has committed to buy 10,000 Comets.

The Comet is not the first electric vehicle to hit Philippine roads. In 2008, the Green Renewable Independent Power Producers introduced the "E-jeepney". But the electric vehicles were more a novelty, for use mostly in resorts, industrial zones and university campuses.

Praise for Workington Comets riders as they get off to league flyer

Last updated at 11:52, Monday, 28 April 2014

Workington Comets team manager Tony Jackson heaped praise on his riders after they romped to victory in their opening Premier League match of the season.

Tony Jackson

Comets produced a strong team performance to beat Premier League newcomers Peterborough Panthers 52-40 at Derwent Park on Saturday.

Every Comets rider rode well and picked up vital points.

Number one Josh Grajczonek top-scored for Comets with 13 points from his five rides, but special praise must be given to fast-improving reserve Ashley Morris who picked up eight points from just four races.

In contrast, Peterborough had three riders who scored double points, but were let down by the fact that their lower-order produced only two points between three riders. Not even the return of ex-Comet Richard Lawson to Derwent Park could dent the confidence surging through the Workington ranks.

Jackson said: It was a really good team performance. Everyone chipped in with points. Peterborough is one of the fancied teams and we were a bit nervous going it this meeting, especially with Richard Lawson riding as a guest for them.

It gives us something to build on. It gives the riders encouragement, management encouragement and supporters encouragement.

Peterborough is a good side, so we have done well.

Workington Comets owner: We can win Premier title

Last updated at 12:45, Saturday, 26 April 2014

Workington Comets owner Laura Morgan is still tipping her side for Premier League glory despite an indifferent start to the season.

Laura Morgan

Comets open their Premier League campaign tonight (7pm start) with a tough match against Peterborough Panthers at Derwent Park.

Workington have won three meetings and lost four this season.

The match will see the return of ex-comet Richard Lawson who will guest for Peterborough in place of the injured Ryan Fisher.

Losses against Edinburgh and Berwick in the League Cup means that Comets are unlikely to progress to the semi-finals by finishing as the best placed runner-up out of the three groups.

But Morgan, pictured above, believes that her side stands a good chance of being among the top teams in the Premier League this season.

She said: Admittedly its taken us a long time to gel together and for everyone to be firing on all cylinders, but some of our riders havent had a lot of track time.

The League Cup is an important trophy, but the Premier League is what we are looking for. We are hopeful that the boys are ready. I am still confident and I still believe.

Inside the Comets: In-Game Host Cecelie Pikus

April 25, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets It isn't easy keeping up with Cecelie Pikus at The AUD during games.

It's till a couple of hours before game time and Pikus, a Hamilton College graduate, keeps a steady presence and pace at The AUD. She has to - it's her responsibility. As the in-game host during Comets home games, what sponsorships, products, and contests fans have become quite familiar with, that seems to be the easier part of her title.

What and where Pikus is needed has become routine. When the Syracuse Crunch were on the ice for their pre-game warm-ups during their only appearance in Utica this season, Pikus was close to the skaters. On the opposite side of the glass of the Crunch, with two minutes to go before the ice is to be cleared of players and the zambonis take over, Pikus is meeting with the woman who will sing the national anthem. It's Pink the Rink Night, the Comets' contribution in recognizing breast cancer awareness. Pikus is demonstrating her commitment to stamping out the disease that overwhelming effects woman, by wearing her rose pink pants.

As the last of the players heads back to the visiting team's dressing room, Pikus is still concentrating on making sure the national anthem goes off without a hitch. There is a contingency of boy scouts who will accompany the singer out on to the ice. Pikus is administering last minute instructions for adults and scouts.

Details are what Pikus' responsibilities with the Comets are all about. By drop of the puck this Friday evening, Pikus will have been in The AUD for nine hours - with several more to go. After uploading pre-cut highlights to CometsTV for public viewing, Pikus' schedule will likely have her leave Oriskany Street West approximately one and a half hours after each home game.

With no prior experience working before thousands of people at a time, there are no visible pre-game, or in-game nerves for that matter, for the Short Hills, New Jersey native. "I've never done this before, except a public speaking class at Hamilton," says Pikus. "Opening night I was a little nervous but much less now."

As the pre-game ceremony is unfolding, the two ceremonial puck drops make things a little more complicated for Pikus. Still in her rhythm, all come off as planned. The rugs placed on the ice for the flag-bearing scouts and those being recognized are being rolled up, and scooped off the playing surface. Next up for Pikus, she will be doing a live promo for First Source Credit Union, a Comets corporate sponsor, halfway through the first period of this and every home game.

"I have no script. I pretty much wing it; ad lib," Pikus, who shares the same hometown with such notables as former New Jersey Devils Brian Rolston and actress Anne Hathaway, tells.

The small-town atmosphere of Hamilton (Pikus' brother currently attends her alma mater) and the Mohawk Valley, appeals so much to Cecelie that she decided to remain in the area after graduation. She tells of many of her classmates moving to New York City and Chicago for employment. Coming from a commuter town where a large portion of its residents work in the 'Big Apple', Pikus gives the impression that, for now at least, she won't be changing her New Hartford address.

Relaxed and enjoying the comings and goings throughout The AUD's nearby lower bowl seated fans, Pikus high-five's one of the evening's cameraman's young son. So, how did Pikus get her foot in the Comets' proverbial door? Completing a summer internship for the New Jersey Devils in their social media and marketing department was a big influence for her career path.

April 25, 2014 Comets Win Ramsey Invite

JOHN CURTIS - Daily Union Sports Editor CNHI The Shelbyville Daily Union Fri Apr 25, 2014, 03:44 PM CDT

SHELBYVILLE, IL. With a 2-1 record in the Ramsey softball invite last weekend, Stew-Stras/Windsor was declared the winner after tie-breakers were figured out.

Stew-Stras/Windsor ran their record to 10-3 as they won the Ramsey tourney. SS/W lost to Hillsboro, 4-3, in eight innings. They bounced back by defeating Ramsey, 13-1, and ALAH, 6-1.

After figuring the tie-breaker format, the Comets were declared the 1st place team. Stew-Stras/Windsor and Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond (ALAH) finished 2-1. Hillsboro and Ramsey finished 1-2.

Stew-Stras/Windsor is off to the best start in about 15 years and they are playing through a lot of injuries.

"We lost our starting left fielder the second game of the year (broken thumb) and our starting center fielder went down against T'town with an ankle injury," said Coach Kyle Knop.

"Kendall Knop had to pitch 9 of the first 10 games, because Courtney Schultz was out with an elbow injury when the season started and could not pitch. becca Schlechte was out of pitching for three weeks with a hip flexor injury.

"The girls have played hard and players have stepped up when we have had injuries."

Ex-Workington speedway skipper aiming to inflict defeat on Comets

by James Broadhurst

Last updated at 11:58, Friday, 25 April 2014

Former Workington Comets captain Richard Lawson will be back at Derwent Park tomorrow aiming to inflict defeat on his old club in their opening Premier League match of the season.

Richard Lawson

Lawson, who was last seasons captain, will guest for Peterborough Panthers tomorrow as both sides get their Premier League campaigns under way.

The Maryport-born racer was sold by Comets at the start of the year to Elite League outfit Lakeside and a buy-back clause has been added to Lawsons contract, which can be activated after the 2014 season.

He has been in excellent form so far this season for both Lakeside and Premier League team Redcar Bears.

Lawson has been drafted in by Peterborough to replace injured American number one Ryan Fisher.

Comets owner Laura Morgan said: Its going to be a tough one. We fully expect them to be strong opponents. They have been made stronger by having Richard Lawson as a guest.

Its a belter of a guest to bring to Workington. Peterborough will be strong opponents anyway. No disrespect to Fisher, but Lawson as a guest makes them even stronger.
