The Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower To Peak Overnight

As comets hurtle into the inner part of the solar system, the Suns radiation causes two tails to emerge. The first is primarily gas, vaporized by the heat of our stars intense, warming rays. But while this glowing streak is what provides the visual imagery we normally associate with comets, it quickly fades as the comets moves across the solar system.

In contrast, the second tail is formed by the pressure of the solar wind as it literally tears the tiny dust particles from the comets surface. And once created, it does not fade. Rather, the remnants of the tail leave a streak across the comets path a trail of breadcrumbs telling the story of where the comet has been.

For comets that cross the orbital path of Earth, the dust left behind provides the source of one of natures most amazing sites the meteor shower. When Earth reaches the remnants of the long departed comet, the tiny particles of dust are superheated in our atmosphere, causing streaks of light across our skies. They disappear nearly instantly as most of these microscopic chunks of rock are usually no more than the size of a grain of sand. It is rare that one would reach the ground. (Some objects called meteorites do reach the ground, but these objects are almost always associated with other events, and are rarely due to comets.)

And because the dust crosses our orbit at a fixed point, the resulting meteor shower is usually an annual event. Consequently, each major meteor shower is associated with a different comet, having passed through Earths orbit at some point in its history. Eventually, over the course of centuries, the dust will be consumed as the Earth takes its annual voyage around the Sun. But new events will arise, as new comets plummet towards the Sun, taking them across Earths path.

Viewing The Eta Aquarid Meteor Shower

Because of the annual nature of meteor showers, astronomers can predict, with great accuracy, when the events will reach their peak, and where on Earth will be ripe for the best viewing. The next major event is called the Eta Aquarid Meteor Shower arising from material left behind by the infamous Halleys Comet hundreds of years ago and will reach its peak in the early morning hours of May 6, though events can generally be seen from late April to late May to a much lesser extent.

In general, major meteor showers are named for their radiant the location in the sky where the meteors appear to emerge usually associated with the closest constellation. In this case, the meteors will seem to materialize out of the constellation Aquarius, specifically near one of its closest stars: Eta Aquarii.

Generally, there are a couple of things to consider when evaluating how good the meteor shower will be. The first is the dust trail itself: how depleted has it become, and how many interactions are we likely to see? For the Eta Aquarid event, we can expect to see about one event every minute under optimal viewing conditions. This is pretty good, though other events later in the year will be better.

Workington Comets buzzing after two victories

Published at 16:50, Friday, 02 May 2014

Workington Comets head into a huge double-header this weekend full of confidence after back-to-back wins, according to owner Laura Morgan.

Laura Morgan

After an indifferent start to the season, Comets comprehensively won their last two matches and are looking to continue their good form this weekend.

They face the reigning Premier League champions Somerset Rebels at Derwent Park tomorrow in the Premier League Knockout Cup, a competition the Rebels also won last year.

The Comets will be hoping for a decent points tally to take to Somerset for the second leg next Friday.

On Sunday Workington travel to the north east to take on Newcastle Diamonds in the Premier League.

Comets romped to victory in their opening Premier League fixture on Saturday with a 52-40 home win over Peterborough and have already enjoyed success against Newcastle earlier this season when they triumphed in the Ian Thomas Shield.

Morgan said: We are feeling much better than we have done of late. I did think the Peterborough match was going to be tough, but on the contrary. There was some excellent racing. The adrenaline was pumping round the stadium.

We hope thats a sign that things are starting to settle down and we will see what happens this weekend.

Workington Comets aiming for flying start

Published at 11:28, Saturday, 03 May 2014

Workington Comets owner Laura Morgan says her side are determined to stamp their authority on the Premier League from an early stage this season.

Chris Schramm

Comets are one of the bookmakers favourites to clinch the Premier League and the riders are beginning to live up to expectations following two consecutive home wins.

Comets breezed through a potentially difficult opening Premier League fixture last Saturday by beating Peterborough Panthers 52-40 at Derwent Park, with all seven riders impressing.

Workington host Somerset Rebels in the Premier League Knockout Cup tonight (7pm) and then face a trip to Newcastle in the league tomorrow (6.30pm).

Morgan said: We are all determined to stamp our authority early in the season. Im expecting the riders to really get going if the Peterborough match is anything to go by.

Workington have already faced Newcastle Diamonds twice after clinching the Ian Thomas Shield 77-73 on aggregate, despite losing the away leg 46-44.

An interesting sub-plot in tonights fixture will see former Comet Charles Wright in Rebels Kevlar and ex-Somerset star Josh Grajczonek riding for Workington.

But Comets will be without two riders for tonights clash. Ricky Wells and Ashley Morris will both be riding for their parent club Wolverhampton, but the pair will return for tomorrows meeting with Newcastle.

Comets use a pair of runs to top Sabers

CLARKS SUMMIT In a match that didnt feature much separation throughout the first two and a half sets, Abington Heights ended the third on a 8-3 run to take a 2-1 set lead in their match against Susquehanna. Senior middle hitter Mike Fitzpatrick contributed a block and kill during the closing spurt of the set.

The Comets carried that momentum into the fourth set with a 14-1 run and won the set 25-10 to defeat the Sabers, 3-1, in a Lackawanna League boys volleyball match on Tuesday.

I think it took us about three sets to wake up, Abington Heights head coach Jamie Spangler said. We were sleepwalking in the first couple sets. When were able to serve aggressively and inbounds, were a much better team overall. That was the big difference.

The fourth set run was sparked by senior outside hitter Kevin Schumacher, who scored the Comets first point of the set and then controlled the serve for 13 consecutive points to take control of the match. Junior middle hitter Shreyas Chandragiri and senior outside hitter Joe Dietzer each contributed two points during the rally.

Susquehanna closed to within 12 points at 20-8, but the Comets rattled off five of the next seven points, including two from junior middle hitter Griffin Joyce to close out the win. Joyce led the Comets with eight kills and four blocks. Sean Salmon, who led Abington Heights with 17 assists, also picked up an ace.

We started passing and picking up the ball a lot better, Schumacher said. It was really a team effort. We just got in a zone and everybody was playing the game well.

Abington Heights took a 7-3 lead in the first set on a kill from Dietzer. Susquehanna rallied to take a 14-13 advantage on a kill from Steven Frye, but the Comets scored four of the final five points, including a block and kill from Fitzpatrick, to win the set 25-21.

The second set featured 10 lead changes and Susquehanna scored the final three points to even the match 2-2. Frye contributed two kills and two aces during the set and Nick Lloyd, who chipped in with nine digs, added an ace for the Sabers. Frye led the Sabers with nine kills and three aces. Nate Carpenter led Susquehanna with 11 digs.

That 13 point run in the fourth set was too much for us, Susquehanna head coach Bill Albert said. We have a young, inexperienced team and it just got the better of them, but we played great the first three games and were real happy with that.

Abington Heights (9-2) will travel to play Elk Lake on Thursday at 5 p.m.
