Comets Re-Sign Lucas Rodriguez

September 15, 2014 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) Missouri Comets INDEPENDENCE, MO (September 12, 2014) - After winning the 2013 MISL Championship last year, the Missouri Comets have announced the re-signing of midfielder Lucas Rodriguez who agreed to a two-year contract extension as the team prepares for its debut season in the Major Arena Soccer League.

Lucas Rodriguez signed with the Missouri Comets for the 2010-2011 season where he played in 17 games scoring six goals and recording seven assists. That year, Rodriguez was named the MISL Rookie of the Year.

Born in Argentina, Rodriguez played collegiately at Mid America Nazarene and led the Pioneers to the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) Championship in his senior year and was named the HACC's MVP while making the conference First Team and Third-Team All-America.

Last season was Rodriguez's finest year as a Comet, and was an integral part of the Comets championship run, helping to anchor the midfield. Rodriguez was third on the team in points with 47 and was tied for third in assists with 15.

"Lucas was outstanding last year, and we're thrilled to have him back for another two seasons," said Comets Head Coach Vlatko Andonovski. "His speed and quickness make him very difficult for other teams to mark."

Entering his fifth season, Rodriguez and the Comets will open the 2014-2015 MASL season on October 25th when they visit the Dallas Sidekicks at the Allen Events Center.

In other Comets news the team will be holding open tryout for players 18 years old and out of high school starting this Saturday, September 20th (3:00PM-6PM) and Sunday the 21st (10AM-1PM) at the KC Soccer Dome, 5909 Equitable Road, Kansas City, MO. Check in on the 20th will begin at 2PM. Registration is $50 in advance and $65 the day of tryouts. Players are required to attend both days of the tryouts.

Comets Indoor Soccer: The Comets are the reigning 2014 Major Indoor Soccer League Champions. The Comets returned to action in 2010 and play at the Independence Events Center in Independence, MO.

Workington Comets handed tough draw in play-offs

Last updated at 11:15, Tuesday, 16 September 2014

Workington Comets have been handed a tough draw against league leaders Edinburgh Monarchs and Berwick Bandits in the Premier League play-offs.

Josh Grajczonek: 17 points against Sheffield last weekend

The Monarchs, who secured top spot with an emphatic 54-36 away win at Glasgow on Sunday, had first pick of opponents for their play-off group.

They selected nearby rivals Comets, who they have beaten three times in as many matches this season, and fourth-placed Bandits.

The three teams will play each other home and away and the team with the most points will progress to the grand final.

The other play-off group will see Somerset Rebels face Scunthorpe Scorpions and Ipswich Witches.

Comets first play-off fixture will see them travel to face Edinburgh on Friday, September 26, and they will then host the Monarchs at Derwent Park the following day.

That means there will be no fixture this weekend for the Comets. Dates for the meetings against Berwick have yet to be arranged.

Comets owner Laura Morgan is in a relaxed mood after hearing the draw.

Win and a draw see Workington Comets into play-offs

Last updated at 10:36, Monday, 15 September 2014

COMETS 50 (45) SHEFFIELD 43 (45): Workington Comets sneaked into the final Premier League play-off place after an exciting double-header against Sheffield Tigers on Saturday night.

In a line: Comets Josh Grajczonek, red, and Ricky Wells during Saturday's second match ahead of the Sheffields Taylor Poole, yellow, and Leigh Lanham

A 50-43 victory in the first match of the evening at Derwent Park secured Comets three league points which proved enough to lift the west Cumbrians into the sixth and final play-off position.

Workington picked up just the one league point from the second match after Sheffield battled to earn a 45-45 draw.

But Newcastles 48-41 loss away at Edinburgh Monarchs on Saturday meant that Comets leapfrogged the North East club into sixth.

Comets pursuit of a play-off spot got off to a bad start in the opening heat of the first match after Simon Stead cruised to a win ahead of Josh Grajczonek. Tigers rider Taylor Poole finished ahead of Ricky Wells for a 4-2 start to Sheffield.

But Workington responded with a 4-2 of their own in heat four courtesy of a great ride from Kyle Howarth, with team-mate Simon Lambert holding onto third sport to even the scores up at 12-12.

Comets got the lead they were craving in the following heat after Mason Campton and Rene Bach surged out of the gate for a 5-1 and a 17-13 lead.

Then Comets were on the right end of the race of the night in heat seven. Howarth was in the lead from the gate and was pursued by Leigh Lanham and Poole. But Howarths team-mate Joe Jacobs made a move on the final bend of the last lap to sneak into second place and get the fans leaping from their seats.

Workington Comets hammered at Somerset

Last updated at 08:24, Monday, 15 September 2014

SOMERSET 64 COMETS 28: Workington Comets endured a miserable evening of speedway after being drubbed 64-28 away at Somerset last night.

Comets registered just a single race win all night as league leaders Somerset Rebels ran out comfortable victors.

Every single Rebels rider rode superbly, particularly guest Nicolai Klindt (13 points) and Nick Morris (14 points).

In contrast, not one Comets rider got into double figures, with both Josh Grajczonek and Ricky Wells top-scoring for Workington with eight points.

The match was a cagey affair to begin with and after the first two heats the scores were level at 6-6 following successive 3-3 scores.

But it was the Rebels who grabbed the first advantage courtesy of a 5-1 in heat three. Klindt sprung into the lead from the tapes and team-mate Charles Wright went past Comets pair Mason Campton and Wells on the outside of the opening turn.

Comets went further behind in heat five due to another excellent 5-1 for the Rebels to extend their lead to 19-11.

It was again the combo of Klindt followed by Wright who secured the points for Somerset. Comets No 1 Grajczonek battled throughout the race to try to pass Wright but to no avail.

Rebels opened up a 10-point gap in the following heat. Comets looked odds on for a 5-1 at the start of the race, but Somersets Olly Allen bypassed Joe Jacobs and then Rene Bach to move into first, while Paul Starke passed Jacobs to clinch third. That 4-2 result made it 23-13 overall to Rebels.

Workington Comets ride into the play-offs

Workington Comets battled their way into the Premier League play-offs after overcoming a stubborn Sheffield Tigers in a scintillating double-header on Saturday.

Tony Jackson: It was too close for comfort

Comets narrowly won the first match of the evening 50-43 to claim three points and then Sheffield fought their way back into the second match to claim a 45-45 draw, which gave Workington just the one league point.

However, four points from the two matches at Derwent Park was enough to lift Comets above Newcastle into the sixth and final play-off position after the North East club failed to pick up any points in a 48-41 loss away to high-flying Edinburgh Monarchs on Saturday.

Workington were made to sweat for their play-off place by a determined Sheffield side. They were 40-20 up after heat 10 in the first match, but Tigers battled back to reduce the gap to just seven points going into the final heat.

A 3-3 in heat 15 meant Comets only just secured a maximum three league points.

Similarly, Comets were eight points ahead after heat 12 in the second match, but Tigers rallied to clinch a draw and take two away points back to Sheffield.

Team manager Tony Jackson said: It was a bit too close for comfort. At the end of the day people dont remember how you get to the play-offs, they just remember you were in it. We have raced two meetings less than everyone and still made the play-offs.

We have got through a lot of matches in such a short space of time. Eight matches in eight days. It has been tough.

NASA OIG Report: NASA's Efforts to Identify Near-Earth Objects and Mitigate Hazards

Scientists classify comets and asteroids that pass within 28 million miles of Earth's orbit as near-Earth objects (NEOs). Asteroids that collide and break into smaller fragments are the source of most NEOs, and the resulting fragments bombard the Earth at the rate of more than 100 tons a day. Although the vast majority of NEOs that enter Earth's atmosphere disintegrate before reaching the surface, those larger than 100 meters

(328 feet) may survive the descent and cause destruction in and around their impact sites.

Furthermore, even smaller objects that disintegrate before reaching Earth's surface can cause significant damage. For example, in February 2013 an 18-meter (59 foot) meteor exploded 14.5 miles above the city of Chelyabinsk, Russia, with the force of 30 atomic bombs, blowing out windows, destroying buildings, injuring more than 1,000 people, and raining down fragments along its trajectory (see Figure 1). Recent research suggests that Chelyabinsk-type events occur every 30 to 40 years, with a greater likelihood of impact in the ocean than over populated areas, while impacts from objects greater than a mile in diameter are predicted only once every several hundred thousand years.

In 1992, NASA began conducting scientific workshops and research into the identification, characterization, and tracking of NEOs, as well as into potential mitigation strategies. NASA reported NEOs with a diameter greater than 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) posed the greatest hazard to Earth and predicted a comprehensive survey could identify most NEOs of this size within a decade.1In 1994, the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology requested NASA identify and catalogue within 10 years the orbital characteristics of all comets and asteroids greater than 1 kilometer in diameter and in an orbit around the Sun that crosses the orbit of the Earth.2Four years later, NASA established a NEO Program Office to coordinate these efforts.3In addition, the NASA Authorization Act of 2005 required the Agency to implement a "program to detect, track, catalogue, and characterize the physical characteristics of near-Earth objects equal to or greater than 140 meters in diameter" and established a goal of cataloging 90 percent of these objects by 2020.4However, even with a ten-fold increase in the NEO Program budget in the past 5 years - from $4 million in fiscal year (FY) 2009 to $40 million in FY 2014 - NASA estimates that it has identified only about 10 percent of all asteroids 140 meters and larger. Moreover, given its current pace and resources, the Agency has stated that it will not meet the goal of identifying 90 percent of such objects by 2020.

We initiated this review to examine NASA's NEO Program and assess the Agency's progress toward meeting statutory and other Program goals. Specifically, we reviewed NASA's allocation and use of resources and plans for the future of the Program. Details of the review's scope and methodology are in Appendix A.

Do-or-die weekend for Workington Comets

Last updated at 11:21, Friday, 12 September 2014

Workington Comets have just three matches left to save their play-off dream.

An impressive six-point haul last weekend has left Workington a wheel away from the play-off positions.

A visit to Berwick on Wednesday yielded no reward, with the home side taking maximum points in a comfortable 55-37 win.

Comets trail Newcastle, in the final play-off spot, by two points and face a daunting trip to league leaders Somerset tonight before the final crunch double-header at home to Sheffield tomorrow night.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have just one more meeting to race, away at high-flying Edinburgh tomorrow evening.

Maximum points would guarantee Workingtons place in the play-offs and complete their impressive comeback from the brink of disaster after numerous rain-offs and injuries put paid to their early season hopes.

While Ricky Wells and Joe Jacobs are hitting form at just the right time, leading light Josh Grajczonek is suffering after racing almost every night in the final stretch of the season.

Owner Laura Morgan said: You cant be consistently as good as Josh has been all season without having a dip somewhere.

But this is the Ricky Wells that we signed, and Joe Jacobs is really coming into his own. He is fearless.

Workington Comets' play-off hopes still alive desptie defeat

Published at 11:21, Saturday, 13 September 2014

WORKINGTON Comets play-off hopes are still in their own hands despite a resounding 64-28 loss away at Somerset last night.

Comets recorded just one race win as league leaders Somerset Rebels showed their title credentials. But the loss did nothing to dent their play-off chances.

Comets trail Newcastle, who are in the final play-off place, by two points and the North East side have a tough trip away at Edinburgh today.

Workington will also have to keep an eye on Peterborough as they are on equal league points with Comets but have a slightly worse points difference.

Peterborough lost away to Plymouth 56-40 and host Rye House tomorrow in their final league fixture.

Therefore, two wins for Comets against Sheffield today in a double-header should secure a play-off place, as long as Newcastle dont pick up four points at second-placed Edinburgh.

Team manager Tony Jackson was disappointed with the loss to Somerset, but admitted that it didnt come as a surprise.

He said: Its not unexpected for several reasons. When we played them in the Knockout Cup we lost 60-30. They are putting 60 points on everybody. There was no reason why we shouldnt be any different.

We didnt start too badly, but after heat eight they graded the track and they got four 5-1s. Their guys know how to ride that track. We were chasing tails all night. Its such a tough place to go.

Comets eye third straight state crown

Interest and expectations are high for the Mason High School girls cross country team.

Coach Chip Dobson said the size of the roster has increased 40 percent over 2013. The Comets have 126 runners in the program.

Our district is getting very large, Dobson said. We have a big freshman class, but some of it is the success we have had and that culture has developed.

Indeed, the Comets have won back-to-back state championships. They return six of the seven runners to competed in last years state meet.

Still, Dobson said the Comets have multiple time trials during the season to find the best lineup (top seven).

We feel like we have a pretty good handle on it in that we are always assessing our top seven, Dobson said. It changes week-to-week. Thats how we roll each season.

Through the first few invitationals, the Comets have already had 15 different runners turn in varsity times. Meagan Murphy, Leah Ford, Ellie Brush, Alberta Negri, Ailee Henderson, Nia Myre, Delaney McDowell, Lauren Rose, Bethany Angstadt, Amy Satterhwaite, Erin Brush, Elizabeth Atkins, Madeline Seiller, Annie McBeth and Taylor Wood have all posted times among the Greater Miami Conference leaders.

Dobson said winning a Greater Miami Conference title the Comets have won four straight is goal No. 1. Winning a third state state title is another.

We know the field is going to be challenging, Dobson said. Last year, three of the top four teams at state were from our regional and one team that didnt get out would have been as good as eight or nine of the teams there. It is a very competitive atmosphere and it wakes me up early thinking about it.

Lebanon: Sue Ellis believes it will take some time for the Warriors to put everything together.
