Hillegas, No. 4 Comets top rival Go-Hawks

CHARLES CITY | Charles City volleyball hasn't been short on star power in recent years.

This season, first year head coach Donna Forsyth is finding new ways to expand her arsenal of weapons. Iowa State commit Hali Hillegas has become a go-to hitter in addition to working as a setter within a system change to a two-setter 6-2 rotation.

Thursday night in Charles City, Hillegas recorded 18 kills on .412 hitting to go with 21 assists and four aces as Class 4A's No. 4-rated Comets prevailed in four sets over Northeast Iowa Conference rival Waverly-Shell Rock, 25-13, 25-23, 27-29, 25-18.

First-year Charles City setter Meagan Miller, a player Forsyth praised for her good hands, also made a difference across the board as she tallied a triple-double of 13 kills, 20 assists and 12 digs. Hillegas worked numerous quick sets to middle Jamie Sindlinger who added 13 kills and 6.5 blocks.

"I think switching to a 6-2 it's really helped us in a good way," Hillegas said. "Everyone is still figuring out where to go and where not to go, but I think it's definitely helped us positively.

"Throughout club season, I hit and I set. So I think just bringing it back to school ball is just an easier transition for me, and I think my team counts on me more."

The win pulled Charles City (21-3) one step closer to securing a Northeast Iowa Conference regular season title that has been traded back-and-forth with Waverly-Shell Rock throughout the years. The Comets have now won seven of their last eight matches over Waverly-Shell Rock, including two victories in the state tournament.

"Before, they always beat us and beat us and now finally everything is turning around," Hillegas said, addressing her program's recent run of success. "I think playing in bigger tournaments has helped us here a lot, knowing that we can actually do it no matter what kind of crowd."

Forsyth was pleased with the end result, but disappointed with the manner in which Charles City got to the finish line. The Comets cruised through the first set as Hillegas pounded seven kills to the ground, but struggled to close out the final three frames.

Waverly-Shell Rock (16-15) rallied from down 8-1 to tie set two at 23 before a pair of miscues gave the frame to the Comets.

ACT Comets fast bowler Michael Delaney tips Ireland to be dark horse at next year's World Cup

Having played a season in Ireland, ACT Comets fast bowler Michael Delaney expects the men from the Emerald Isle to be the surprise packets at next year's World Cup.

Ireland will continue its preparations for the one-day tournament when it takes on the Comets in two 50-over matches at Manuka Oval next Tuesday and Thursday.

Delaney makes his return to the representative arena in the second match after recovering from consecutive shoulder reconstructions.

Having previously been contracted by South Australia, the 26-year-old suffered his most recent shoulder injury while playing in Belfast last year.

He believes Ireland will challenge the second-tier teams at the World Cup, and has the potential to spring an upset on the higher-ranked sides.

"I think they'll be a little bit of a dark horse," Delaney said.

"They'll be the team to beat out of the minor countries and they might cause an upset here and there.

"Their top cricketers can play first-grade cricketers anywhere, the thing they struggle with is a little bit of depth, but they're definitely improving."

Settling in: West Liberty's Bridenstine finds her way, role for unbeaten Comets

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa Ruben Galvan says that this seasons West Liberty High School volleyball team is off to the best start of any team hes coached in his 13 seasons at West Liberty.

The Comets have a 19-0 record one of just four unbeaten teams left in the state regardless of classification and Galvan is quick to point out that such an achievement was only possible through the sum of the teams parts, not just through one person.

Galvan illustrated that point by recalling the effect that was felt by the Class 3A No. 7 Comets when Audra Bridenstine, an experienced junior outside hitter, had a bit of a slump two weeks ago when West Liberty played Iowa City Regina and Tipton.

She had a rough week of practice and games, and we didnt look as sharp as we have because of her not being as sharp as she can be, Galvan said.

While the Comets got through that week with straight-set victories over the Regals and the Tigers, Bridenstine worked through her issues, scoring 16 kills for the Comets at last weekends Mid-Prairie tournament, including a team-leading six kills in the championship match with the Golden Hawks.

Im not even sure if I figured out how to get back in the groove, but I just cleared my mind and just let whatever happens happens, Bridenstine said. Even when Im not hitting my best, my teams always picking me up and it seems that me and [setter] Cassedi [Simon] connect.

Bridenstine has remained a consistent threat at outside hitter along with Kayla Kaalberg, flanking middle hitter and leading attacker Hailey Daufeldt. Shes on pace to match her kill numbers from last season, with 85 kills in 44 sets thus far.

More notably, shes emerged as the teams most efficient server after not offering up one serve throughout her sophomore season. Bridenstine has converted 101 of 105 serves and has 14 service aces.

This seasons team is nearly identical to last seasons group with the exception of one senior, Merideth Nichols, graduating after the Comets bowed out in the opening round of the regional tournament in 2013.

But last season's team was wrestling with improving upon the success of teams in the previous two seasons, including the 2011 squad that went to the state tournament.

Comets host junior jamboree

The MUCC JuniorComets football team had their day in the sun, so to speak, on Saturday. The comets hosted a junior jamboree, which featured quick games against a variety of opponents. Comets head coach Dave Rogers said the junior program is more than vital to the success of the football program in Melfort and a great learning opportunity for up and coming players. It is really an opportunity for those kids to go in and be the players, to be successful or learn how to be successful in an area where if you screw up and it results in seven points on the board for somebody else nobody is going to be that upset, Rogers said. The program is starting to pay dividends for the Comets in the senior team. The Comets football team that lost the provincial championship in 2011, the team that won the provincial championship in 2012, and the provincial semi-final team last year were all a result of the junior football program. Most of the kids that we see out on the field this year are once again products that have continued to contribute continuously to our success. Between the Junior Jamborees and the Melfort Kinsmen Minor Football League players have developed well and Rogers is pleased to be part of them. He added that voting for the Scotiabank Game Changers Award has started again with Rogers as a finalist. People are encouraged to get online and vote for him to win $25,000 for Melfort Kinsmen Minor Football. That is a great opportunity to bring some more resources to Melfort.

Excitement is Building Up for Utica Comets Second Season

This section displays the last 50 news articles that were published.

UTICA, N.Y. -- Hockey season is right around the corner and teams across the country are getting back on the ice. Excitement for the upcoming season is strong in Utica, where the Comets are preparing for their second season.

"Our fans are great, they're second to nobody in the AHL. The atmosphere in this arena is incredible. They're almost like a seventh player on the ice," said Utica Comets Head Coach Travis Green.

As the fans get pumped up for the new season, the Comets organization is also making last minute preparations.

"We're almost done with some of our renovations. We added a suite, we're adding a members' bar and got new lighting so we're almost ready to go. We got a new paint job as well so it's an exciting time at the AUD," said Mark Caswell, the director of communications for the Comets.

There will also be a few changes on the ice. Fans will see some new faces this year. Coaches are expecting about five to seven new players on the Comets.

Jacob Markstrom, is a new goalie for the Comets.

"We have a really good camp in Vancouver and I was impressed by a lot of players. And obviously I said to a couple guys that I believe we can and we will have a really good team down here. So I'm really excited to get it going," said Markstrom.

Coaches said they can already see a positive difference in their team and are optimistic for the upcoming season.

"I know last year for the first 20 games or so we talked about not having a team together that had been together before. And just from day one, just having, I don't know the numbers it feels like 10-15 guys that have been here last year, it's a major difference," said Green.

Football Comets stay undefeated

The MUCC Comets defense continued to burn the opposition on Friday as they defeated the Humboldt Mohawks 28-8 in Humboldt. They have been playing really well, lights out defense, said Comets football coach Dave Rogers. The defense held the Mohawks to a single point until less than a minute remaining in the game when Humboldt scored their only touchdown. I cant take away much form the offense as they score enough points to make sure that we win, but defense definitely has been number 1. Te Comets scored on their first possession but then went silent for a while. Rogers said the defense provided the offense with a couple chances to score, but they couldnt capitalize. In the first quarter the Comets were inside the 10-yard line and couldnt score. In the second quarter they were inside the 20-yard line and couldnt score. Rogers said things like that are frustrating. A lot of it is mistakes we made on offense, little mental breakdowns, people not completing their routes, he explained. It is things like that which killed drives and took away opportunities for us to put the game out of reach early. He said the team is at the point where those types of things shouldnt happen, but they do. He said even the professionals make mistakes. If you watched the Rider game on the weekend you watched the pros play way worse than we ever have. And they get paid to do it for a living. These mistakes will be worked on all week and preparations will be made to host the Nipawin Bears on Friday. Rogers said the Comets have to be prepared for any opponent at any time. Like everyone else, they like to play physical football. They are well coached and we have to be ready to play football. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. at MUCC field greg.wiseman@sunmedia.ca @melfortjournal

Imperious Monarchs brush aside Workington Comets

Last updated at 13:03, Monday, 29 September 2014

Workington Comets 40 Edinburgh Monarchs 50: There will be no Premier League silverware heading to west Cumbria this season after Workington Comets were brushed aside by on-form Edinburgh Monarchs.

Mason Campton (red) and Simon Lambert alongside Edinburghs Aaron Fox (yellow) and Steve Worrall

An impressive 60-34 win for Edinburgh in Scotland on Friday was quickly followed up with a classy 50-40 victory at Derwent Park the next day.

Monarchs have beaten both Berwick Bandits and Comets home and away to ease their way through to the play-off grand final where they will face either Scunthorpe, Somerset or Ipswich.

After Friday nights loss, Comets knew they needed to come away with three points from Saturdays fixture.

However, Edinburghs superior quality proved too much for Workington, with several riders nursing niggling injuries and No1 Josh Grajczonek absent through injury.

Workingtons Ricky Wells (10 points) was solid throughout the meeting and Sam Masters (12 points) was outstanding for Edinburgh.

But Comets only won two races all night, which in the end cost them the tie.

Workingtons night did, however, start with a bang after an impressive 5-1 in the first heat. The race had to be re-run after Craig Cook was penalised for jumping the tapes too early.

Edinburgh too good for Workington Comets in play-offs

Last updated at 10:44, Monday, 29 September 2014

Workington Comets bid for Premier League glory came to a crushing end at the hands of the vastly superior Edinburgh Monarchs.

Tony Jackson

Having lost 60-34 away at Edinburgh on Friday night, Workington needed a maximum of three points in the return fixture at Derwent Park on Saturday to keep their hopes alive.

But Monarchs, who have been leaps and bounds ahead of most Premier League teams this season, came away from west Cumbria with four away points in a 50-40 victory.

Monarchs will now contest the play-off grand final against either Scunthorpe, Somerset or Ipswich.

Saturdays clash was a tight affair for most of the meeting, but following a 5-1 in heat 11, Monarchs pulled away to clinch a comfortable victory.

Comets recorded just two wins all night, with Ricky Wells (10 points) the highest scorer for the Cumbrian club. Sam Masters (12 points) was the most impressive Edinburgh rider on the night.

Tony Jackson, Comets team manager, was gracious in defeat. He said: Edinburgh has been by far and wide the standout team this season.

We knew we would be up against it. We were glad to get seven riders on the track, but it wasnt our full team.
