Ireland record emphatic victory against the ACT Comets in one-day cricket match at Manuka Oval in Canberra

Irish eyes smiled on Canberra as the men from the Emerald Isle enjoyed the first victory of their World Cup familiarisation tour of Australia.

After back-to-back losses in Queensland last week, Ireland bounced back to form with an emphatic 124-run win against the ACT Comets at Manuka Oval on Tuesday night.

Ireland posted an imposing total of 8-302, thanks largely to Niall O'Brien's 88 from 79 balls, before its bowlers restricted the Comets to 178 in reply with Craig Young (3-36) and Peter Chase (3-39) picking up three wickets each.

O'Brien said it was an encouraging all-round performance as Ireland continues its preparations for next year's World Cup, which includes a match against South Africa at Manuka Oval on March 3.

"We've got a game here in the World Cup, so hopefully we get another win on Thursday and come back with fond memories and have a good match," O'Brien said.

"We probably got more than we thought we might get at one stage 260, 270 would have given us a good chance, then some good batting at the end from Andrew Poynter and John Mooney got us over 300.

"We've got a very young bowling attack, so it's pretty good to get 10 wickets and to restrict them to under 200."

O'Brien held the innings together, the 32-year-old showing all the experience of his 60 one-day internationals and 21 T20's for his country.

Do Comets Rain Down on White Dwarf Stars?

When astronomers observe some white dwarf stars, there can sometimes be small amounts of hydrogen trapped in the stars upper layers. The traditional view is that these tiny stellar husks suck up diffuse interstellar hydrogen gas, but now a team of researchers suggest something else is going on: comets are likely raining down into the white dwarfs ancient atmospheres from exo-Oort clouds, seeding them with hydrogen.

ANALYSIS: White Dwarfs Are Eating Earth-like Planets for Dinner

White dwarfs form after sun-like stars extinguish the majority of hydrogen fuel in their fusion cores. This causes heavier and heavier elements to fuse, turning the star from a once-quiescent state into a violent, churning red giant. Eventually, through powerful stellar convulsions, the bloated red giant is ripped apart, leaving a small, dense white dwarf in its wake.

A white dwarfs structure is not maintained by the outward pressure supplied by fusion reactions to counter gravity, like our sun. The quantum pressure supplied by electron degeneracy is what prevents its gravity from causing it to collapse in on itself. This balance between forces creates a very dense stellar object that may have a mass comparable to the sun, but collapsed into a diameter comparable to the Earth. As such, white dwarfs can continue to shine for many billions of years.

When observing white dwarf spectra (i.e. the different wavelengths of light), astronomers have noted that many examples possess atmospheres that are metal rich. In astronomy terms this means there are elements trapped in the upper layers of the white dwarf heavier than helium. Depending on the elements present, astronomers have interpreted these spectroscopic signatures as being asteroids or even planets that have survived the death of their sun-like stars, only to later become shredded by the white dwarfs intense tides. This shredded, dusty material rains down on the white dwarfs, leaving a spectroscopic signature of the ultimate death of planetary systems.

ANALYSIS: Sifting Through the Ashes For Shredded Planets

This area of white dwarf study has led to some fascinating observations of star systems that may resemble our solar system after the sun has run out of fuel in a few billion years time and turned into a white dwarf; the planets and asteroids near to our suns corpse become ripped apart, enriching our suns white dwarf with metals.

In new research accepted for publication in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, astrophysicist Dimitri Veras of the University of Warwick and colleagues have now found a possible mechanism that could be lacing white dwarf atmospheres, not with metals, but with hydrogen.

Here we explore the possibility that the gradual accretion of exo-Oort cloud comets, which are a rich source of hydrogen, contributes to the apparent increase of trace hydrogen with white dwarf cooling age, writes Veras.

The build-up of hydrogen in white dwarf atmospheres has been attributed to interstellar hydrogen being collected by white dwarfs as they age, but to account for the quantities being observed, there must be another source, argues Veras.

Hamilton's Three Point Night Paces the Comets

October 4, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets Riding Wacey Hamilton's three point night, the Utica Comets wrapped up their preseason slate of games with a 4-1 win over the Adirondack Flames Saturday night, at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Dustin Jeffrey (1-0-1), Darren Archibald (1-0-1), Carter Bancks (1-1-2), and Wacey Hamilton (1-2-3) netted goals for the Comets, while goaltender Joe Cannata (1-0-0-0) notched the win with 24 saves

After a scoreless first period the Comets got to work quickly in the second period. Hunter Shinkaruk, in his first preseason game as a Comet, started the scoring play by absorbing a body check along the sideboards in order to feed the puck to Brandon DeFazio behind the net. DeFazio spun and passed to Jeffrey in the slot, who tapped it in for the game's first goal.

Just 26 seconds later Archibald doubled the Comets lead. Bancks came out of a scrum in the corner with the loose puck, chipped it to Hamilton, who raced behind the net. From there Hamilton found Archibald at the face off dot to the right of the Flames netminder. Archibald sniped home a one-timer over the goaltender's short-side shoulder.

11:03 into the final period Corban Knight cut the Comets lead to one. With the Flames net empty due to a delayed penalty on the Comets, Knight ripped a shot past Cannata from the top of the face- off circle. Garnet Hathaway and Bill Arnold picked up assists on the goal.

The Comets tacked on their first insurance goal with just 2:07 left to play. DeFazio capitalized on a bad Flames turnover in their own zone and broke in on a 2 on 1 with Bancks. DeFazio slid the puck over to Bancks who buried from point blank range.

Hamilton capped off his three point night with an empty net goal from 150 feet away.

The Comets finished the preseason with a 2-1 record. Both victories came over the Adirondack Flames.

The Comets regular season kicks off Saturday, October 11 in Toronto vs the Marlies. Puck drop is scheduled for 3pm.

Comets Defeat the Flames 4-2 at JFK Arena

October 3, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets The Utica Comets evened their pre season record to 1-1 with a 4-2 win over the American Hockey League's newest franchise, the Adirondack Flames, at John F. Kennedy Arena in Rome, NY.

All proceeds from the game were donated to the John F. Kennedy Arena to benefit all the programs that call the arena home. The Comets will make their Utica debut on Wednesday, Oct. 22, against the same Adirondack Flames, in the team's home opener.

Dustin Jeffrey (2-0-2) and Alexandre Grenier (1-1-2) led the way for the Comets with two points apiece, while goaltender Joacim Eriksson (1-0-0-0) notched the win in relief of Jacob Markstrom, turning aside all six shots he faced.

The Flames got on the board first at the 17:15 mark. Bryce Van Brabant emerged from a battle for the puck in the corner. Van Brabant streaked across the bottom half of the faceoff circle and beat Markstrom high blocker with a wrist shot, for the unassisted tally.

Van Brabant would add an assist to his night after setting up the Flames second goal of the night. 7:41 into the second period, Van Brabant wristed a shot from below the goal line that ricocheted off of Markstrom's leg pad and in to the slot, directly to an awaiting Kenny Agostino who would not miss from there.

Joacim Eriksson took over goaltending duties at the 9:59 mark of the second period as part of a pre-planned goaltending switch.

The third period was all Comets, starting with a highlight reel shot from Dustin Jeffrey. After receiving a breakout pass from defenseman Kane Lafranchise, Jeffrey streaked into the Flames zone, along the boards, and let loose a wrist shot that beat goaltender Mathieu Corbeil high on the short side.

Just two and a half minutes later, Dustin Jeffery struck again. After drawing the lone defenseman on a 2-on-1 over to him, Grenier slid a pass over to Jeffrey who was in all alone. A quick deke, and a backhand flip over the extended leg pad of Corbeil, later, led to a tied game.

Two and a half minutes after that, Brendan Gaunce sliced across the top of the crease while firing a shot on goal. Corbeil denied the original shot, but Patrick Kennedy was there to put the rebound home.

With just 37 seconds remaining, Grenier broke out of the Comets defensive zone and put the game away as he scored on an empty net from the blue line.

Comets romp to sixth straight win

HAZLETON On his way to an electrifying 34-yard touchdown run, Crestwood quarterback Jay Popson refused to stop until he reached the end zone.

Not many of his teammates were denied either.

Frank Aigeldinger rushed for three touchdowns, Popson scored two and unbeaten Crestwood hammered Hazleton Area, 41-7 by putting the mercy rule into effect midway through the second quarter Friday at Harman Geist Stadium.

The victory kept 6-0 Crestwood as the only undefeated team in the Wyoming Valley Conference, and set up next weekends showdown with Class 4A power Wyoming Valley West.

But the Comets certainly werent looking ahead to it.

It was certainly a concern of ours, something we talked to our kids about all week - No let-down, Crestwood coach Greg Myers said. Everybodys gunning for us now. We certainly cant look past anybody.

Instead, the Comets simply looked for the end zone.

Aigeldinger scored on touchdown runs of 1 and 32 yards on his first three carries, and the other was a 24-yard sprint on Crestwoods first offensive play to set up his short score. Aigeldinger later added a 34-yard touchdown romp to give Crestwood a 27-0 lead less than a minute into the second quarter, which finished the night for the leagues leading rusher at 91 yards on four carries.

Frankie ran the ball well, Myers said. They really didnt have an answer for him.

Plenty of other Comets proved a problem for Hazleton Area, too.
