Comets battle but miscues prove too hard to overcome

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa It was a game-saving drive for the moment.

After giving up three second-quarter touchdowns, the West Liberty High School football team was able to cut the deficit to 14 at the end of the first half and received to open the second half.

The Comets would have their chances later in the game, but struggled to execute and fell to West Burlington/Notre Dame 28-7 in a Class 2A District 5 contest on West Libertys homecoming night.

We had some turnovers with our offense that kind of led to some scores, West Liberty co-head coach Jason Iske said.

The Falcons (3-4, 2-2 Class 2A District 5) were led by running back Isaiah Trousil, who finished with nearly 160 yards rushing. Quarterback Brant Wrede passed for 145 yards and rushed for 58 more.

Give them credit, they definitely have good kids in the skill positions, Iske said.

West Liberty (0-7, 0-4) quarterback Cooper Koenig passed for a little more than 100 yards while Joe Baker and Sam Weaver combined to rush for nearly 60 yards rushing.

In the second quarter, West Libertys Noel Palma intercepted a Brant Wrede pass with 11:46 left in the half, but the Comets gave the ball back on the following play as Xavier Williams intercepted Cooper Koenig and brought it back 65 yards for the first score of the game.

The Comets were forced to punt on their next possession and the Falcons added to their lead when Trousil was able to break away for a 36-yard scoring run to make it 14-0.

West Liberty immediately turned the ball over again on a pitch attempt and WB/ND took advantage once again when Williams hauled in a 10-yard pass from Wrede.

Clayton's Hoy excels on both sides of the ball

CLAYTON, N.C. -

Eric Hoy has played a position or two for the Clayton Comets.

"Quarterback, running back, wide receiver, cornerback," he said. "Also, safety, linebacker and long snapper, and punter."

But it's his current position of quarterback that seemed to catch him by surprise.

"Coach just asked me, 'Can you throw the ball son?' " Hoy explained. "And I was like, we'll see. So we went outside one day and started throwing and just got the position from there."

Hoy can throw it. He's passed for more than 1,000 yards while adding 700 rushing yards for the Comets.

Last year, Hoy rushed for a 1,000 yards from his running back position. Moving a successful runner to quarterback, though, was an easy decision according to Clayton head coach Randy Pinkowski.

"If you're going to run that style of offense, the quarterback has to be an athlete," Pinkowski explained about the Comets multi-set attack.

"We knew Eric could go back there and be successful basically because he's moved around the field and played a lot of positions well," Pinkowski said.

Even though Hoy is playing quarterback, that hasn't kept him from being on the field on the other side of the ball.

Comets regroup, stop losing streak with strong win at Durant

DURANT, Iowa Thursday was the beginning of a new season for the West Liberty High School volleyball team.

Entering their showdown with Durant, the Comets had lost two competitive matches in the previous five days to Pleasant Valley and West Branch, blemishing a previously-undefeated record.

Instead of lamenting the lost unbeaten mark, West Liberty has left it behind. Durant avoided a sweep with a comeback victory in the third set, but the Comets responded with a dominant fourth set, finishing off the Wildcats 3-1 at Durant High School on Thursday night.

The Class 3A No. 7 Comets (25-2, 7-1 RVC) won 25-14, 25-19, 26-24, 25-10.

Audra Bridenstine had a Comet-best 19 kills and Hailey Daufeldt added 17 kills with two blocks. Durants Shannon Telsrow led the 2A No. 10 Wildcats (17-5, 6-2) with 18 kills, including eight in the victorious third set.

We werent hoping to go four, West Liberty coach Ruben Galvan said, but I think it showed great character on our part to settle down after a shaky start to figure it out and beat a very good Durant team.

The Wildcats were down a key player Thursday after Sarah Nanninga had to get an emergency appendectomy on Wednesday morning. Nanninga was present to root her team on, but her presence as Durants key middle hitter was sorely missed, Durant coach Renee Meyer said.

Even without Nanninga, Meyer noted that Durants passing was the major downfall against the Comets.

It was terrible, Meyer said. Yes, its a different six on the court [without Nanninga] but its not like the other girls hadnt been there playing before.

I like that we fought back in that third set to win that, but tonight had to start with our passing and it just wasnt there.

Ireland scrapes home despite century from ACT Comets' Matt Condon

Matt Condon scored a breakthrough century for the Comets on Thursday against Ireland. Photo: Rohan Thomson

ACT Comets youngster Matt Condon stamped himself as a star of the future, scoring a century at almost a run a ball in a one-wicket loss to Ireland on Thursday.

The 18-year-old anchored the Comets' innings with a superb knock, bringing up his ton with a six as he made 126 from just 128 balls in a competitive total of 5-305.

However, it wasn't enough to deny Ireland a second straight win in Canberra, the visitors reaching the target with 10 balls to spare in a thrilling finish at Manuka Oval.

Condon got away to a shaky start before finding his feet, the opener just clearing the fence over the fielder at deep long on to reach three figures.

"It's ridiculous. I never thought this day would come and it's massive for me in the future," Condon said.

"I couldn't have swung any harder and I just cleared the boundary.

"I had no idea what score I was on.

"The batting powerplay was on with only three fielders out so I had to have a dip.

ACT Comets' hope bid to rejoin one-day competition will be finalised in weeks

Cricket ACT hopes to know the fate of its bid to rejoin the national one-day competition when officials meet with the Cricket Australia board at a meeting on October 30.

As revealed in Fairfax Media last month, Cricket ACT has signed a memorandum of understanding to develop pathways with Country Cricket NSW and Cricket NSW, including a united push to play in the domestic 50-over competition from 2015.

Fringe players from other states would have the chance to play for a new team based in Canberra and Cricket Australia is considering the proposal.

Cricket ACT chairman Ian McNamee will be at a board meeting at the end of the month while Cricket NSW boss Andrew Jones will be in the capital on Friday to unveil the joint pathway program.

Canberra's first-grade captains have backed the proposal to have the Comets reincarnated under a new banner.

The capital is preparing to host a bumper summer of cricket, which includes Australia versus South Africa in six weeks, the Big Bash League final and three World Cup games at Manuka Oval.

McNamee said Cricket ACT was pushing ahead with its bid to join the one-day competition.

"We want to get it back to where it was once before, and I don't believe that aspiration is out of order," McNamee said.

Comets Fall To Massapequa 3-1

Written by Matthew Levine, hicksville@antonnews.com Thursday, 09 October 2014 08:46

It was something senior Noelle Batista had been practicing since was very little.

She stepped up to take a free-kick from 25 yards out for the Hicksville Comets against the rival Massapequa Chiefs. The practice certainly paid off as it was a fantastic curling effort into the top corner.

Not a bad effort for someone who usually doesnt take them.

Usually Kelly Carroll, our center back takes them but Noelle has been begging me to take them, Comets head coach Rich Hinnerschietz said.

However, she just may get more opportunities in the future.

No way, Hinnerschietz joked before admitting hes going to have to.

For the Comets, unfortunately the great goal came with the team down by three goals.

Chiefs senior forward Kristen Bischoff fired into the top corner in the games fifth minute to put Massapequa in front.

While the Comets came out moving the ball well, the early goal changed the game.

Comets undefeated after victory over Bears

The junior players on the MUCC Comets football team logged a lot of play time on Friday during a 47-20 win over the Nipawin Bears. Comets head coach Dave Rogers aid the senior players accomplished their goals early in the game before stepping aside and letting the younger players to experience a game atmosphere. It was a great experience for them and they got to play lots and they are going to get to play lots again. We play Nipawin again (October 24 in Nipawin) and they are going to have a lot of opportunity to play, Rogers said. It will be a good way for the juniors to see how far that they can grow in those weeks. Junior players typically takes to the field near the end of the game or during junior jamborees. However they played over an entire half against the Bears. This game setting is completely different from a junior jamboree according to Rogers. I dont think it really compares to a jamboree. They are totally different experiences for the simple fact that, in this case, we are asking our younger players in many cases to play against players that are quite a bit older than them, larger and have a maturity difference. The Comets started out strong as Matthew Goudy returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. In Nipawins first possession the Comets defense forced a safety adding two more points. Melforts first offensive series led to another touchdown, this one by Tyler Jones. The defense held the Bears to no yards before the offense took the field again, adding another touchdown. This one from Jomar Malaggay. Just four minutes into the game the Comets led 23-0. They added three more touchdowns before the end of the firs quarter. Brandon Kadachuk scored two while Jones added another making the score 44-0 at the end of the first quarter. Early in the second quarter Sean Renouf kicked a 35 yard field goal rounding out the Comets scoring. At the very end of the third quarter the Bears wrecked the Comets shutout bid and held the Comets scoreless in the fourth quarter. At the very end of the third quarter Lucas Woods had a 10-yard touchdown run. The conversion missed leaving the Bears with six points. Nipawin added another one with a minute and a half remaining in the contest when Carter Pierlot kept the ball and ran 17 yards for a touchdown. This time the Bears went for a two-point conversion and scored, giving them 14 points. Their offense was not done yet. With 23 seconds left in the game, Kyle Cox caught a 30-yard pass from Pierlot for a touchdown. The Bears went for two again, this time they missed to end the game. The Comets have a bye this week letting them concentrate on their own attributes for a short while. It gives us an opportunity to refocus on ourselves clean up some stuff that we need to clean up and get ready go. greg.wiseman@sunmedia.ca @melfortjournal
