WESTPHALIA, Mo. A thrilling game came to an exciting end with a game-winning single off a Blair Oaks bat. Unfortunately for the Lady Falcons, it was in the hands of Fatima leadoff hitter Leah Kesel.
Kesel, a senior, is in the process of buying a bat from Blair Oaks pitcher Payton Staggs, who plays with Kesel for the Missouri Stealth in the summer. Kesel still has to pay Staggs for the bat, but Kesel made Staggs pay Wednesday night, using the bright orange bat to hit a pitch thrown by Staggs to left-center for a walk-off single.
The Lady Comets claimed an 8-7 win against Blair Oaks in a Class 2 sectional game.
Just a half-inning earlier, the Lady Falcons rallied from down 4-3 to take a 7-4 advantage into the bottom of the seventh. The Lady Comets matched them, plating four runs of their own and sending the home crowd into hysterics.
Its just a rush of adrenaline, and I absolutely love the feeling, Kesel said.
It was the third hit of the day for Kesel, who also pitched, allowing five earned runs and striking out nine. She scored each of her first three trips to the plate.
Leah came through huge at the end something I know she can do, and she did it, Fatima coach Dana Scheppers said. Thats senior leadership right there, coming up to the plate knowing you can do it.
Kesel held Blair Oaks scoreless until the fifth inning, and she had three runs of support behind her. Michelle Barnhart scored Kesel in the first inning with a single in the third inning with a double. Kristen Boeckmann singled Barnhart home in the third as well.
The Lady Falcons erased the lead, however, with a three-run fifth. Carli Buschjost walked, Taylor Markway hit an infield single, Lauren Viessman drove in Buschjost with another single, and Jolie Duffner reached first on an error that allowed Markway and Viessman to score.
Before the inning ended, the Lady Comets took the lead right back. Kesel singled, Barnhart sacrified her to second, and Sammey Bunch singled her in. Morgan Brandt singled, Boeckmann walked, and Fatima looked poised to broaden its lead.

(WKTV) - A handful of Utica Comets left behind their hockey stick onFriday and hit the streets with the mayor to help keep the city clean.
The Quality of Life Sweep began at noon by the Parkway and the Comets joined later in the afternoon, even digging in their heels and pushing a broken-down care out of a yard. But the best part of the day, the Comets say, was talking to kids at Jones Elementary.
"I really enjoy coming to schools," said DustinJeffery, Utica Comets player. "I had a lot of teams and people that did that for us and it's people we look up to, and it makes an impact on the kids.So for us to go into the schools and connect with them that way, it's big.Doing the street sweeping, it's a cool task around the city, but the school visit really hits home."
The Quality of Life Sweeps happen weekly through November. Community members are welcome to join.

ASHEBORO The Asheboro High School varsity volleyball team entered Tuesdays Mid-Piedmont Conference semifinal undefeated.
Sometimes its good for a team to have a bit of a scare before the postseason.
The top-seeded Blue Comets overcame a rough first game to top No. 5 Southern Guilford 22-25, 25-17, 25-12, 25-12 at AHS. Asheboro (19-2) plays No. 2 Southwestern Randolph (17-7) in todays final at 6 p.m.
Give Southern Guilford credit, Blue Comets coach Karen Blanchard said. They looked great. We had a few calls on us that we havent all year. That got us down a bit. I told the girls they had to have fun. It took one of the girls doing something to make the other laugh to get us going.
Courtney King paced Asheboro with 16 kills and 15 digs, while Amy Yates and Salem Davidson each added eight. Yates had three blocks, while Davidson had six aces and 11 digs. Gilliam Foscue dished out 20 assists with Hannah Ferguson adding 13.
The first game was streaky as the Blue Comets started with a 5-0 run and the Storm answered with seven straight point to take a 7-5 lead. Asheboro scored the next six to go ahead by three. After that, there were six ties and a lead change before Asheboro went ahead 22-19 on a Yates kill. Southern Guilford responded with the next six points, taking the game and a 1-0 match lead on a Carlin Bailey ace.
The Storm took an early 5-1 lead in the second game. The Blue Comets came back, tying the score twice before going ahead 8-7 when a SG player was called for crossing the net. After that, Asheboro upped its lead to as many as nine (21-12). Southern Guilford cut it to six (23-17), but a King push and kill tied the match at a game apiece.
After back-and-forth play to start the third game, the Blue Comets went on a 6-0 run to go ahead 8-2 and then a 9-1 streak to up their lead to 16. Southern Guilford scored the next five points to pull within 11 (23-12), but a Davidson kill and ace put Asheboro ahead 2-1 in the match.
The fourth game started with five ties and two lead changes before the Blue Comets went on a 6-0 run to go ahead 13-8. The Storm couldnt recover as Asheboro scored the last eight points of the game to win the match.

Blink and you may have missed out on a Comet shower hitting the northeast edge of Okotoks on Friday.
The Raymond Comets soared to a 28-0 lead at the half and held on for a comfortable 37-13 triumph over the Holy Trinity Academy Knights in high school football action, Friday night at Knights Field.
We talked about it during the week and last year they did the same thing they jumped on us out of the gate, lamented Knights head coach Matt Hassett. And were just not a team that can play from behind. Were a running football team, were a power football team.
Raymond, seven-time Tier 1 provincial champions, opened the scoring late in the first-quarter with some flair as slotback Rhett Ellingson kickstarted a brilliant evening with a one-handed touchdown reception.
The Grade 12 Comet would soon double the advantage on special teams. Ellingson returned a punt from 45 yards out untouched into the end-zone for a backbreaking score early in the second quarter.
I remember running through the middle and all the green guys shifted over to the left of the field and I cut back through the middle, he said. It was wide open to the end-zone.
The Comets would add to the Knights misery by taking advantage of an HTA fumble at midfield and converting on a 30-yard run through the posts. HTA would again turn the ball over with just 10 seconds on the clock when quarterback Spencer Kiranas was picked off at midfield. Raymond would quickly get itself into the red-zone on a hook-and-ladder reception and took advantage of a gap in the Knights cover-four defence with a 20-yard touchdown reception on the final play of the half.
The hosts performance was Knight and day after the restart.
Nick Villarreal showcased his foot speed and returned the second half kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown, the second straight week the Grade 12 receiver registered a special teams score, to finally give the HTA faithful something to talk about.
I was just angry. I couldnt believe it was 28-0, we let our guard down, Villarreal said. I just wanted to kick the second-half off with a bang.

October 13, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets Last Week In Review: The Utica Comets left Toronto with three out of a possible four points from their doubleheader at the Ricoh Coliseum this past weekend. The Comets kicked off their 2014-15 campaign with a gritty 2-1 win on Saturday. On Sunday the Comets got their first taste of the new overtime rules with a 3-2 loss coming in the 3-on-3 portion of overtime. There's 74 games left to be played, but after the first weekend of play the Comets sit alone atop the Western Conference's North Division standings.
In non-gameplay news the Comets and the Utica Memorial Auditorium were selected by the American Hockey League to host the 2015 All-Star Classic in January. The Turning Stone Resort Casino is the presenting sponsor, and will be home to the all of the weekend's festivities besides the Skills Competition and the All-Star Game.
Saturday, October 12: Utica Comets @ Toronto Marlies - W 2-1
The Comets chased off any thoughts of a repeat of last year's disastrous 0-8-1-1 start with a 2-1 victory over the Toronto Marlies, at the Ricoh Coliseum.
The power play unit paved the way for the Comets, going 2-for-7 on the evening. Both Comets power-play goals proved critical, and both came with a 5-on-3 advantage.
Alexandre Grenier (1-1-2), and Cal O'Reilly (0-2-2), paced the Comets with two points apiece, while Jacob Markstrom made 24 saves en route to his first win as a Comet. Dustin Jeffrey chipped in the game-winning goal in his Comets debut.
Sunday, October 12: Utica Comets @ Toronto Marlies - OTL 3-2
Sunday's contest in Toronto started off a lot like the Comets-Marlies tilt on Saturday, with Toronto scoring first and the away team storming back for a 2-1 third period lead. However, the rest of the script was drastically different as Victor Loov scored twice, once in the third period and once in overtime, to give the Marlies their first victory of the young season.
Joacim Eriksson made his 2014-15 Comets debut by turning away 25 of the Marlies' 28 shots. Dustin Jeffrey (1-0-1) scored for the second time in as many games, and Brandon DeFazio (1-0-1) netted his first goal of the season as well. Alex Grenier picked up an assist for his third point in two games, while Hunter Shinkaruk picked up his first career professional point with an assist on Jeffrey's goal.
A Look Ahead:

October 12, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets The Comets let a third period lead slip away in Toronto, as the team lost 3-2 in overtime to the Toronto Marlies Sunday afternoon at the Ricoh Coliseum.
Brandon DeFazio and Dustin Jeffrey netted goals for the Comets, while Joacim Eriksson stopped 25 of the Marlies 28 shots in the loss. Viktor Loov scored twice for the Marlies while Christopher Gibson made 25 saves for the victory.
After a scoreless first period the Marlies kicked off the scoring off of a Comets neutral zone turnover that led to a Marlies short-handed 2-on-1 rush. A give-and-go between Troy Bodie and Greg McKegg ended after Brodie cut across the top of the crease to beat Eriksson on the far side.
Dustin Jeffrey kept his hot start going with his second goal in as many games. From the top of the circle Hunter Shinkaruk found a hard charging Grenier who banged a one-timer on net. Gibson was there for the original save, but Jeffrey was there to bury it into the empty net to tie the game. With the assist on the goal Shinkaruk recorded his first career professional point.
A fortuitous bounce 2:23 into the third period led to the Comets only lead of the night. Handling the puck behind his own net, Marlies' goaltender Gibson was pressured heavily by Brendan Gaunce which created a turnover. The puck found Brandon DeFazio's stick, who beat Gibson back to the front of the net for the Comets second goal of the game.
With 6:20 remaining in the game the Marlies tied it back up at 2. Connor Brown ripped off a blind, spinning pass to the slot from the corner. The puck carammed off Tommernes' skate right to Loov, who beat Eriksson glove side with a wrist shot from the slot hashmarks. Josh Leivo was credited with the secondary assist.
It was a bitter taste, but the Comets got their first taste of the American Hockey League's new overtime rules. Loov struck again to put an end to any thoughts of a shootout. With as much room to maneuver that you could ask for, Loov cut across the top of the slot after he received a pass from McKegg. A quick wrist shot beat Eriksson, and sent the Comets to their first loss of the season.
The Comets power play went 0-for-3 and gave up a short-handed goal on the night. Utica killed all three Marlies power plays, and are now 7-for-7 on the season.
The Comets are back in action Friday night in San Antonio to take on the Rampage at 8pm EST. Last year the Comets went 0-1-0-1 losing in a shootout in San Antonio.

Ethan Bartlett will play for the ACT Comets in the Sydney T20 competition on Sunday. Photo: Jeffrey Chan
He only stepped off a plane from Holland last week, but ACT Comets all-rounder Ethan Bartlett wasn't going to miss the chance to audition for a spot in the Big Bash League.
Comets players will be hoping to impress selectors from the Sydney Thunder in their opening roundof the Twenty20 Sydney grade competition at Campbelltown on Sunday.
Professional contracts will be up for grabs, with the Comets in the "Sydney Thunder Conference" of the tournament while the Sydney Sixers will also be casting their eye over potential players.
Bartlett is coming off an impressive season in the Cricket ACT first-grade competition where he helped Wests/UC win both the two-day and Twenty20 titles.

He has also returned this week from a five-month playing stint with a Dutch club side in The Hague.
The Comets proved to be a stepping stone to the BBL last summer, with Jono Dean and Ben Oakley both playing for the Adelaide Strikers and Blake Dean securing a contract with the Thunder.
Bartlett said the recruitment of those players showed that the BBL was a realistic goal for others in the Comets' system.
"It makes you realise it's probably not that far away if guys we play with week in and week out are playing in it," Bartlett said.

The ACT Comets lost both of their games in the first round of the Sydney Twenty20 competition in Campbelltown on Sunday.
The Comets went down to Bankstown by 23 runs in their opening match before a 36-run loss to Campbelltown in the second game of the afternoon.
All-rounder Vele Dukoski was the best performed of the Comets bowlers in the first match against Bankstown, taking 2-23 from his four overs in a total of 5-160.
That proved out of the Comets' reach, with Eastlake captain Michael Spaseski top-scoring with 34 in his side's total of 137.

The Comets did a better job with the ball in their match against Bankstown, keeping their opponents to just 5-140.
Comets coach Mark Higgs who played a couple of seasons ago with the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League showed he can still be effective in the short format, taking 3-18 from four overs.
Higgs then played a lone hand with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 30 from 22 balls, but it was in vein as the Comets finished on 8-104.

ACT Comets lose both games of the Sydney Twenty20 competition
HACKENSACK It was a rough week for the Hackensack football team. Coming off a bad loss to Passaic Tech, the Comets were in a funk for most of the week leading up to Saturdays game with Eastside.
They seemed a bit bewildered still as the first half played out. Hackensack was its own worst enemy against the Ghosts through halftime, but it came out for the second half and went to smash-mouth football.
It was just what the doctor ordered, as the offense stopped making mistakes and supported the defense in a 32-6 win that the Comets hope rights the ship and sends them full steam ahead to a North 1 Group 5 playoff spot.
"Im not going to lie to you. We did not practice well this week," Hackensack coach Benjie Wimberly said. "We had a lot of expectations going into the PCT game and we played like deer in the headlights, and everyone was like, What happened? "
The Comets were sloppy over the first 24 minutes despite owning an 11-0 lead. Vinnie Lalumia kicked a 42-yard field goal on Hackensacks first possession, but after that came a pair of interceptions by Eastsides Ramir Tann-Davis.
The second of those came at the Comets 4-yard line, and on the next play, Kaz Simpson broke in and dropped the Eastside running back in the end zone for a safety.
The offense continued to struggle for consistency, with penalties hurting it as well. It wasnt until 4:41 remained in the half that Hackensack (4-1) finally would find the end zone. Asante Dyer scored from 6 yards out after setting up the touchdown with back-to-back 21- and 20-yard runs.
"We knew we had to regroup and come together," Dyer said of the offense. "We had to bounce back and play our hardest."
That late score seemed to get the Comets into the game, and they came out and ran right at Eastside (2-3). They went 91 yards in eight plays, all runs, and Dyer capped the march with a 24-yard burst off right tackle, part of his 159 rushing yards on 24 carries.
"We banded together," Wimberly said. "We just decided, Lets not get cute. I wanted to come out and throw the ball to get my quarterback going, but we just went back to basics."
