Blue Comets top CD, secure second in MPC

ASHEBORO When a defense runs into a team with an unconventional offense, it may take a while for that defense to figure out what needs to be done in order to be successful.

Central Davidson brought its very-tight double-wing T offense into Lee J. Stone Stadium Friday night to meet Asheboro High School in the final Mid-Piedmont Conference contest of the regular season and it took some time for the Blue Comets to figure out the Spartans unusual offensive set. But once AHS did, the Blue Comets dominated.

After allowing a 16-play scoring drive to the Spartans in the games opening drive, the AHS defense stiffened, forced a couple of key fumbles and the Blue Comets went on to record a 28-15 victory.

The win boosts AHS to 5-1 in league play and 8-3 overall, more than likely earning the Blue Comets a home playoff game for the first time since 2008. Central Davidson finishes 1-5 in league play and 3-8 overall.

Its been a different week of practice in terms of preparation, second-year AHS head coach Owen George said after leading his team the most wins in a regular season since the 2008 season. There were new things to learn and new reads to an entirely new system we were preparing for. It takes time to get acclimated to an offense like that. It can get frustrating. It was an unconventional offense that threw us for a loop. But once we got used to seeing what they were doing, we played much better. I was very pleased with how our defense played from really the second quarter on.

Central Davidson dominated time of possession in running a total of 54 plays from scrimmage 50 running plays and four passing plays. The Blue Comets ran just 38.

The Blue Comets trailed 9-7 at halftime before taking the lead for good midway through the third quarter and they then added a couple of more scores in the final period for a 28-9 lead. Central Davidson added a late score for the final tally.

That is a very unconventional team and they are going to fight, George said. We knew they would. They still had a chance to make the playoffs, so you can just throw the record out the door.

CD took the opening kickoff and behind the running of Perry Roach, Jerod Walls and Joe Beeson, drove 74 yards in 16 plays, and when Roach scored on a 5-yard run, the Spartans had a 6-0 lead. The drive took 8:46 off the clock.

AHS was held to a three-and-out on its only possession of the first quarter as the Spartans ran 19 plays to just four for the Blue Comets in the first 12 minutes.

Workington Comets re-sign rider Campton for next season

Last updated at 11:48, Friday, 07 November 2014

Workington Comets have confirmed Mason Campton as their first signing of the 2015 season.

Mason Campton

The popular Aussie re-signed for next year after an inconsistent start in his debut Comets season.

Campton originally signed for Workington at the end of 2012 but was unable to ride the following year due to visa problems. He picked up the award for most bonus points at the clubs end-of-season presentation night last Friday.

And on his current 4.55 average, Comets management has a possible reserve berth in mind.

Laura Morgan, owner, said: It was an absolute no-brainer. I just think hes a steal on that average for next year.

He was only 20 when he came and it took him time to settle in. We would to like to put together a team with him beginning at reserve. He would be pretty untouchable from there.

A Comets asset, Campton has had an inconsistent year but shown glimpses of his potential with battling displays. Morgan and her fellow co-promoters Steve Whitehead and Tony Jackson will be hoping to coax more of that out of him in the new year.

Morgan added: He has matured a lot this year. He was one of the first names on the teamsheet. There was no question about having him back, hes here on his own merit.

Markstrom Pitches Fourth Shutout in Comets 1-0 Win

November 5, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets Jacob Markstrom pitched his fourth shutout of the year as the Comets blanked the Binghamton Senators 1-0 on Wednesday night at The Utica Memorial Auditorium.

Markstrom stole the show and excited The AUD faithful yet again. The Swedish goaltender ended up stopping all 19 shots faced and recorded his fourth shutout in six games.

The physicality between the two teams presented itself early on in the first period with the teams' combining for 38 penalty minutes, 20 of which were fighting majors.

The Comets got all the scoring they would need just 13:41 into the game. Dustin Jeffrey broke into the zone after receiving a pass from Bobby Sanguinetti. Jeffrey slid a centering feed to Jensen, who popped the puck past Binghamton's Andrew Hammond for his fourth goal of the year.

"It could have gone either way, it was the small little details that made the difference," Jensen said of the game.

After tonight's win, the Comets now lead the Western Conference with 18 points.

The Comets will hit the road starting Friday to face the Lake Erie Monsters in Cleveland, Ohio at the Quicken Loans Arena. The 7:30 p.m. EST match-up will be the first of two meetings for the teams this season. Last season, the Comets went 3-1-0-0 when visiting the Monsters and 5-2-0-1 overall.

The Comets will return to The AUD on Wednesday, November 12 to battle the Chicago Wolves, a team that has been closely trailing the Comets position in the Western Conference.

Comets advance with 61-19 win over Meadow Lake

In what was the final home game for the Melfort Comets football team they had a great performance in all facets of the game in their 61-19 over the Meadow Lake Carpenter Spartans on Saturday, November 1 at MUCC Field in the SHSAA 9-Man Football 3A quarter-finals. Leading the way was the offense which got going after a slow start in the first quarter. I think it was one of our best offensive performances of the year. The offense came out and executed very well from the first possession to the last possession when we gave it over to the juniors. I think we punted twice, Comets coach Dave Rogers. The game turned on a defensive stand mid way through the first quarter which gave the Comets the football on downs. It was pretty even up in the first quarter, we got a turnover and made a play and the defense put a stand together and we started rolling from there, Rogers said. Rogers noted that Comets were strong in all three phases of the game, with mistakes on special teams being the only flaw. We got a little bit of work to do in special teams, we let a big kickoff return, we have to clean up a couple of things on special teams. We had a punt partially blocked, he said. The Comets defense, which has been a strong suit all season, allowed the offense to put up their performance. Little things didnt turn into big things because our defense played well. We need to secure those things and clean them up, Rogers explained. After going two and out on their first three drives the Comets got on the board to make the game 7-0 on a touchdown by Jomar Malaggay. Soon after the Spartans tied it on touchdown by Ryley Pethick. Running back Tyler Jones picked up three touchdowns with his first giving the Comets a 14-7 lead in the second quarter. Jones, a Grade 11 running back, wanted to win the game for the graduating Comets players. Its the Grade 12s last home game so we wanted to make it good for them. We had a good week of preparation and it all showed on the field today, Jones said. Along with Jones, Brandon Kadachuk had three touchdowns in the second half and Lee Taylor also picked up a touchdown. That was our offenses best complete game that we have played all year, Jones said. Getting the win in the final home game was important for building momentum into the next round. It was huge you just want to show your fans what you can do going on the road for provincial semis and hopefully the provincial final. It was a big game and we came out on top, The Comets added their final points when Logan Ferland kicked a field goal with under two minutes remaining. Ferland was perfect on extra points and field goals on the day. A safety rounded out theComets scoring. Brandyn Martin was the defensive player of the game with key plays throughout the game. The Comets travel to Delisle on Saturday, November 8 after Delisle defeated Broadview 31-9 on Saturday in the other SHSAA 9-Man Football 3A quarter-final. They are a familiar foe for the Comets. This will be the fourth year in a row that we play Delisle, Rogers said. michael.oleksyn@sunmedia.ca @melfortjournal

Comets strike first, advance to state quarters

KINGSTON For Crestwood, nothing is more important than that first goal.

The Comets thrive off it and until they get it, their opponents face unrelenting offensive pressure until that ball finds the back of the cage.

It took a little longer than usual on Tuesday night, but with 17 seconds left in the first half, Crestwood got that goal en route to a 3-1 win over Boiling Springs in the opening round of the PIAA Class 3A Field Hockey Championship at Nesbitt Stadium.

It was so important, said sophomore Jordan Olenginski about scoring first. The last 30 seconds were so exciting. Just going into the second half knowing we had a one-oh lead. Just a little reassurance goal knowing we had to play more defense in the second half.

Crestwood will face Selinsgrove, 3-2 OT winners over Twin Valley, in the quarterfinals on Saturday at a site and time to be determined.

From the very start of the game, Crestwood took control of the game. They dominated ball possession and gave Boiling Springs players little relief in those rare moments when they actually won the ball. But the feisty Bubblers clogged passing lanes and prevented Crestwood from cashing in.

That was until Olenginski took advantage of an assist from Madisyn Granoski and put the Comets on the board 1-0 heading into halftime.

I think they know that they can score and if they keep knocking it will happen, Crestwood head coach Pat Moratori said. So they tend not to get frustrated. I think that will help us in the long run. They know they have to work and its not going to come easy and its not going to be simple.

From there, it was business as usual for the Comets. Hannah Ackers knocked in a rocket of a shot (assisted by Casey Cole) which echoed throughout the stadium when it hit the back of the cage to put Crestwood up 2-0.

Olenginskis second goal of the night, assisted by Cole, put the game out of reach at 3-0. Boiling Springs eventually got on the board on a goal by Elyse Brockman, assisted by Emma Spisak, with 16:20 to go.

Comets lose final game

Scrantons defense limited Abington Heights to 65 yards of total offense and Jacob Watts scored two touchdowns to lead the Knights to a 16-3 win over the Comets in a Lackawanna Football Conference Division 1 game at Scranton Memorial Stadium on Friday.

This was one of our better defensive games, said Scranton head coach Mike Marichak. We had a couple shutouts, but tonight I thought we put some pressure on the quarterback and they couldnt run the ball. I think, upfront, we did a nice job.

Scranton kicker Alvaro Fernandez capped a 9-play, 63-yard drive with a 28-yard field goal to give the Knights a 3-0 lead with 7:04 left in the first quarter.

Comets kicker Colin McCreary tied the game, 3-3, with a 24-yard field goal to cap a 4-play, 16-yard drive with 9:50 remaining in the second quarter. Sam Radkiewiczs 34 yard punt return helped set up the score.

An interception by defensive back Damel Wright set the Knights up at the Comets 25-yard line with 7:05 left in the second quarter, but three consecutive stops for losses, including a sack by Joe Arcangelo on fourth down, ended Scrantons scoring threat.

Scranton (7-3, 6-1 LFC Div. 1) had another scoring opportunity stopped by the Comets when defensive back Jake Henzes intercepted Scranton quarterback Anthony Tooson at the Comets 25-yard line with 1:20 remaining in the first half.

Scranton regained the lead when Watts ended an 11-play, 81-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run with 11:25 left in the fourth quarter. Tooson connected with Dylan Granahan for 18 yards on a 3rd-and-10 play from the 19 to set up the score. Fernandezs extra point made the score 10-3.

Abington Heights (4-6, 2-5) linebacker Collin Huggler intercepted Tooson on the Knights next drive and returned the ball into Scranton territory, but the Comets couldnt convert the turnover into points.

Im extremely proud of these players, Abington Heights head coach Joe Repshis said. They have been resilient all year.

After an interception by Knights defensive back Ramon Fields, Watts carried the ball all seven plays of Scrantons 50-yard drive and scored his second touchdown on a 3-yard run to stretch the lead to 16-3 with 2:48 remaining in the game.

Flames Drop 5-4 Nailbiter to Comets

November 1, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Adirondack Flames Glens Falls, NY - The Adirondack Flames' three game winning streak on home ice ended in a 5-4 loss to the Utica Comets on Saturday evening at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Emile Poirier skated in his first game of the season and scored two goals, a career-high. Bill Arnold also recorded a career-high with two assists. Brad Thiessen made 20 saves on 22 shots in relief of Joni Ortio, who took the loss.

The Utica Comets opened the scoring just 37 seconds into the game as Brandon DeFazio beat Adirondack goaltender Joni Ortio with an assist from Darren Archibald. Less than two minutes later the Comets struck again, as Nicklas Jensen extended the Utica advantage to two. Alex Biega and Cal O'Reilly were credited with the assists.

The Flames had two power play opportunities in the first period but were unable to capitalize. Moments after the second man advantage expired, Poirier sent a rocket past Utica goalie Joacim Eriksson 14:38 into the period to cut the Comets' lead to 2-1. It was Poirier's first goal in his first game of the season. Arnold and Patrick Sieloff recorded assists, Sieloff's first point as a professional.

Moments later, Utica re-extended their lead to two goals, as Peter Andersson slipped one past Ortio from the point with an assist from Bobby Sanguinetti, After Utica's third goal, Brad Thiessen took over as netminder for the Flames. Ortio finished his night with eight saves on 11 shots.

In the second period, the Comets capitalized on the power play after Bryce Van Brabant was whistled for hooking. Alexandre Grenier buried the goal off of a nice backdoor feed from O'Reilly. Nicklas Jensen had the secondary helper as the Comets took their largest lead of the night at 4-1.

Despite a three-goal disadvantage, the Flames did not sit back as Poirier doubled his pleasure. Just over a minute after Grenier's tally, Poirier got one past Eriksson off of a quick pass from Bill Arnold to shorten Utica's lead 4-2. Defenseman Dustin Stevenson was also credited with an assist on the goal, his fifth point of the season.

Utica answered back with its fifth goal of the night to push its lead to 5-2 thanks to Carter Bancks. After a scramble in front of Thiessen, Bancks found space on the back post and was able to chop the puck past. Wacey Hamilton recorded the lone assist on the play.

On Adirondack's fourth power play of the night, a quick-thinking Thiessen sent an outlet pass to Max Reinhart, who Fed Van Brabant who snapped a shot past Thiessen to cut the deficit to 5-3. The point was the first of the season for Thiessen and his first since the 2011-12 season.

Minutes later, at the 15:50 of the second period, Ben Hanowski took a feed from Corban Knight in the slot and sent it into the net to pull the Flames within one goal at 5-4. Winger Sven Baertschi recorded an assist on the goal, his second in as many games.

Comets Extinguish Flames 5-4

November 1, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets The Utica Comets scored early and often Saturday night but ultimately just slipped past the Adirondack Flames with a 5-4 win at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Five different Comets recorded a goal in tonight's match-up including Brandon DeFazio who recorded his fourth goal of the season. Nicklas Jensen (1-1-2) and Cal O'Reilly (0-2-2) paced the way for the Comets with two points apiece.

As soon as the puck hit the ice in the first period the puck was no stranger to the back of the Flames net. Just 37 seconds into the first period Brandon DeFazio received a pass from Darren Archibald and rushed down the right side of the ice. Before Ortio had any time to react DeFazio sneaked a quick shot just underneath the crossbar to put the Comets ahead.

Just eighty-four seconds later Jensen tipped an Alex Biega slapshot through Joni Ortio's five-hole to double the Comets lead. O'Reilly was credited with the secondary assist to extend his point streak to six games.

Adirondack finally pushed through towards the tail end of the first period. At 14:38 Emile Poirier buried a quick slapshot from the red dot to the left of Eriksson to make it a 3-1 game.

The Comets quickly returned the favor just moments later for their third goal of the night after Peter Andersson received a pass in the attacking zone from Bobby Sanguinetti. Andersson slid a shot through Ortio's five-hole to extend the Comets lead to two once again. After allowing three goals on 11 shots, Ortio only lasted 15 minutes before he was replaced by back-up goaltender Brad Thiessen.

Just over two minutes into the middle period Grenier buried a rebound of an O'Reilly shot to push the Comets lead to 4-1. The goal, a power-play goal, was Grenier's third goal of the season.

Adirondack's Poirier continued to torture Eriksson with his second goal at the 4:29 mark of the second period. Billy Arnold set up a play behind the Comets net and quickly stepped out to the front of the net and fed a pass to Poirier. The puck beat Eriksson to the far side post and Poirier tapped it in for the Flames second tally of the night. Dustin Stevenson was credited with the secondary assist.

Just three minutes after that, the Comets rookies were back at it again when Wacey Hamilton dished a pass in front to Carter Bancks who scored what would ultimately be the game-winning goal.

13:03 into the second period Bryce Van Brabant received a pass at the Comets blue line from Thiessen that caught the Comets in a line change. Brabant broke loose for a break-away power-play goal to cut the Comets lead to two. Both Thiessen and Max Reinhart took the assists on the give and go play.

Comets make history with perfect season

WRIGHT TWP. In front of their huge home crowd, the Crestwood Comets accomplished something thats never been in their programs history.

The Comets, who have been around for 47 seasons, since 1968, finished off a perfect 10-0 regular season with a dominating 50-20 victory over the Pottsville Crimson Tide on Friday night.

Crestwood, which already clinched the top spot in the District 2 3A playoff, will host Dallas, who beat Lake-Lehman 27-26, in the first round next week.

The Comets powerful rushing attack totaled 262 yards and six touchdowns from the ground alone.

The Comets were led by senior running back, Frank Aigeldinger, who rushed for a team-high 89 yards and on first quarter three-yard touchdown, hit a career milestone, rushing for over 4,000 yards in his standout career.

Fellow senior, starting quarterback, Jay Popson, also made an impact during the game, both with his arm and legs. He ran for 56 yards on just 5 carries, including a 34-yard touchdown run right at the buzzer to end the first half and give his Comets a 36-7 advantage heading into the locker room.

Popson added another rushing touchdown to start the scoring in the second half, and threw for 194 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown pass to junior wideout Connor Sheloski.

The Crestwood defense kept the Crimson Tides passing attack in check most of the game. Sophomore Lance Blass had two big interceptions, one of which brought the ball to the 2-yard line to set up another Comets touchdown.

Pottsvilles senior quarterback, Patrick Keatings 156 yards was enough to push him over 1,000 passing yards this season. Keating connected on a 76-yard touchdown pass to Eric Wapinsky in the fourth quarter. The Crimson Tide could night avoid finishing their first winless season at 0-10 since the 1958 campaign.

Comets Erase 3-0 Deficit But Ultimately Lose 4-3 in OT

October 31, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets The Utica Comets erased a 3-0 deficit before losing in overtime to the Binghamton Senators at the Utica Memorial Auditorium on Friday night.

Cal O'Reilly (0-3-3), and Henrik Tommernes (1-1-2) paced the way for the Comets with multi-point nights. While Jacob Markstrom 24 of the Senators 27 shots in the loss.

It didn't take long into the first period for the Senators to break Jacob Markstrom's bid for the all-time American Hockey League shutout record. Five minutes and 55 seconds after the puck was dropped Jean-Gabriel Pageau of the Senators was fed a pass from Buddy Robinson directly above the center hash marks. After the feed, Pageau proceeded to take a wrist shot towards Markstrom's glove side. Markstrom got a piece of it but failed to hold on as Alex Guptill tracked the puck down inside the blue paint and buried it for his first career AHL goal.

At 17:23 of the first period Peter Andersson took a two-minute hooking penalty and the Senators found the back of the net again on the tail end of the powerplay with just 51 seconds left in the first period. Alex Grant tipped the puck in past Markstrom for the second goal after Carter Camper took a slapshot from the right dot. Aaron Johnson was credited with the secondary assist.

The Comets still struggled with discipline as they headed into the second period. Darren Archibald took a roughing penalty at 4:07, which left the Comets shorthanded for the fourth time in the game. As the Senators set up in the Comets zone for 5-on-4 opportunity, Chris Wideman received a pass from Matt Puempel at the right dot for a slapshot that was buried to the short side of Markstrom to make it 3-0. Pageau received the secondary assist on the second power-play goal for his second point of the game.

The Comets finally snuck a puck past goaltender Scott Greenham when Travis Ehrhardt received a pass from O'Reilly and fired a slapshot from the left point just in front of the blue line. Greenham was struggling to see through the screen and the puck found its way past his glove side to make it 3-1. This was Ehrhardt's first goal on the season.

The Comets continued to conjur up some more slapshot magic 4:07 into the third period when O'Reilly passed the puck to his defensemen at the blue line. Henrik Tommernes was the first to receive the pass but quickly fed the puck to Corrado on his left. With one quick swing of the stick, Corrado delivered the puck past Greenham to make it 3-2 for what would be Corrado's first of the year.

Following the mantra "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," the Comets found their third goal and the equalizer from another blue line slapshot. This time Tommernes received a pass at the center point from, none other than, Cal O'Reilly. Tommernes cranked one hard past Greenham for it his first goal of the season and the Comets sixth power-play goal of the season. O'Reilly earned his third assist for the game.

The Senators took advantage of the power play for the third and last time 4:21 into the overtime period. Tommernes took a hooking penalty at 3:14, which forced the Comets into a 4-on-3 situation. With more ice to play with, Aaron Johnson fed a pass to Wideman who slapped it home past Markstrom for the game-winning overtime goal.

The Comets finished the game with 44 shots on net. The penalty kill unit finally looked human, killing only 3-of-6 Senators power plays.

Comets hold off strong field to win regional

The Mason High School girls cross country team knew the Division I regional in Troy wouldnt be easy.

The Comets entered as the second ranked team in the state, but the field was stocked with half of the top 20 teams in the final state poll, including top-ranked Centerville.

It is very competitive, Mason coach Chip Dobson said after the Comets claimed the title with 56 points, 19 fewer than the Elks. It has been that way for the last several years. Troy has been the host of two or three of the top five teams in the state.

The top four teams and top 16 overall individuals advanced to Saturdays state meet at National Trailway Park in Hebron.

The Comets placed four of their runners before Centerville had its second runner cross the finish line. Beavercreek, ranked fifth n the state, was third.

We knew Centerville and Beavercreek would be good, Dobson said. Centerville came on strong late in the race, and we could feel them coming. We knew it would come down to one of us three and that on any Saturday anyone of us could win it.

Junior Meagan Murphy led the Comets with a second-place finish in 18 minutes, 35.02 seconds. Sophomore Ellie Brush was ninth in 19:07.30.

Senior Ailee Henderson was 12th in 19:23.46 and senior Erin Brush was 21st in 19:45.46. Leah Ford rounded out the top five with a 25th place finish in 19:54.30. Senior Delaney McDowell rounded out the scoring.

There was a lot of math going on., Dobson said. We wanted so many in the top 20 and the next group in the top 30. We knew of we were in front of some of the other runers.

Senior Delaney McDowell was 30th and Brittany Angstadt was 60th to round things out for the Comets.
