Comets Add Another Victory to Their Winning Streak

December 1, 2014 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) Missouri Comets HARRISBURG, Pa. (November 29, 2014) - The Missouri Comets (5-0) earned their fifth consecutive victory and remained undefeated in the 2014/15 Major Arena Soccer League season after defeating the Harrisburg Heat 24-10 at the Farm Show Arena on Saturday Night.

The Heat along with Syracuse, Baltimore and Rochester are the only teams in the league that still play under the multipoint scoring system. A total of eight players scored for the Comets and Leo Gibson added 6 more points to his league-leading season with one goal and five assists.

Harrisburg's goalkeeper Doug Petras returned from an eleven-year retirement, however, his 20 saves were not enough for the Comets to find the back of the net in 12 different occasions.

In the first three minutes of play, Max Touloute scored twice and gave the Comets an early lead before Harrisburg's Patrick Thompson tallied the first and only goal for the home team in the first quarter.

Moments later, Leo Gibson notched his thirteenth goal of the season before Bryan Perez and Milan Ivanovic each scored to end the first fifteen minutes with a 10-2 lead.

The second stanza had Robert Palmer tally his first of the night eighteen seconds into the quarter and again six minutes later giving the Comets a six-goal lead but Harrisburg's Kenneth Fultz shortened for the home team ending the half with a 14-4 score.

Two fouls from Gibson and two from Stefan Stokic were the highlight of a scoreless third quarter; nevertheless, the 2,518 fans in attendance witnessed a total of eight goals in the fourth and last quarter.

After three minutes, the Comets scored three times. Perez tallied his second of the night before team captain Vahid Assadpour and Stokic each scored their first of the match.

Harrisburg's Dave Cash pulled one back but Andre Braithwaite and Assadpour again stretched the lead. Late in the match, the Heat gained momentum and reduced the nine-goal lead after Tyler Witmer and Georges NouBossie both scored to end the match with a final score of 24-10 in favor of the Comets.

Next up, the Comets will look to extend their winning streak with back-to-back matches when they host the reigning PASL Champions Chicago Mustangs at the Independence Events Center on Friday night before visiting the Tulsa Revolution on Saturday.

Workington Comets speedway sign fourth Danish rider

Published at 09:06, Monday, 01 December 2014

Workington Comets have confirmed a fifth signing, Danish rider Michael Palm Toft.

Happy with the outcome: Comets co-promoter Steve Whitehead alonside owner Laura Morgan

Palm Toft is the fourth Dane in Comets colours for the 2015 season, joining Kenneth Hansen, Rene Bach and Nicki Barrett, as well as the returning Aussie Mason Campton.

He had previously guested for the Comets in 2012 and joins on loan from Scunthorpe on his 2013 Premier League average of 4.92.

The 24-year-old was recommended to the club by ex-Comet Craig Cook, who was team-mates with the Dane at Belle Vue last season.

Comets co-promoter Steve Whitehead said: When Craig mentioned that he felt he would do a great job in the Premier League based on his Elite League performances, and we received confirmation that his average would be the 2013 figure, we started to talk to Michael.

In the end it was quite an easy deal to do. He was very keen to join us and team up with the other Danes, and we feel that weve bagged a rider on a bargain average.

Comets owner Laura Morgan added: I would personally like to welcome Michael to the team and hope that the fans give him a warm welcome too.

He has a good record at Derwent Park and, when he has ridden as a guest for us in the past, he has produced some excellent scores for the club. At this rate we are going to have to give ourselves the nickname Lille Danmark as they say in Danish.

Comets Lose to Devils 2-1

November 29, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets The Utica Comets saw their two-game win streak vanish after a 2-1 loss at the hands of the Albany Devils Saturday afternoon at the Times Union Center.

Will Acton scored his first goal while donning the Comets sweater and recorded his third point in three games. Joe Cannata started in net for the Comets for the first time this season stopping 22 of the 24 shots he faced from the Devils.

It was a pretty tame game up until the tail end of the second period when the Albany Devils found their first goal of the night at 15:38. After a rush into the offensive zone, Graham Black wristed a shot on Cannata which beat him far glove-side for the 1-0 lead. Brandon Burlon was credited with the only assist on the play.

The Comets answered right back just 54 seconds later with their only goal of the night. Brandon DeFazio and Will Acton both entered the attacking zone with the intent to score. A hashmark to hashmark feed gave Acton the opportunity to fire a shot on net. The shot went well wide and bounced hard off of the back boards, ricocheted off of the back of Keith Kinkaid's glove, and directly into the Devils net.

Things turned sour for the Comets in the third period as Darren Archibald took a five minute major penalty, and a 10-minute misconduct for charging at the 8:41 mark.

Hardly three minutes later, the Devils found the game-winner on a power-play goal after a pass from Mike Sislo that gave Joe Whitney a slapshot opportunity to the right of Cannata. Whitney buried the puck for the 2-1 final decision. Brandon Burlon tallied his second assist of the game.

The Utica hockey club will have a couple days of rest before they head back on the road for three-game road trip. The Comets will first visit the Oklahoma City Thunder for an 8 p.m. ET match-up in what will be their first of two meeting this year.

Canberra first-grade cricket competition suffering because of ACT Comets selections

Michael Spaseski has been dropped from the Comets team to play Tasmania on Monday. Photo: Graham Tidy

The quality of the Canberra first-grade cricket competition is declining as a result of Cricket Australia's guidelines as to how Cricket ACT selects the ACT Comets team.

Just three players from the Canberra competition - a record low - are in the Comets line-up for Monday's four-day Futures League match against Tasmania at Manuka Oval.

Players will be given the option of sitting out the game or attending the funeral of Phillip Hughes on Wednesday, while a replacement or rest day is also being considered.

Eastlake batsman Michael Spaseski has been dropped from the Comets team after struggling for runs in the previous two Futures League games and one-day fixtures against Ireland and Afghanistan.

Spaseski had no issue with his non-selection given his failure to score runs for the Comets this summer, despite scoring 470 runs for Eastlake at an average of 78.33.

"I don't think the selectors look at the club cricket as closely as they used to," Spaseski said.

"The standard is getting worse around Canberra, so the clubs aren't too much of a selecting point for them, that's purely just because of the standard dropping in the last few years.

"It's moved towards the Comets aren't going to pick anyone who is playing in Canberra.

Hackensack running back Asante Dyer attempting to find room to run around the right side against Teaneck on Thursday. He had 117 yards on 25 carries.

HACKENSACK Coming off of a playoff loss and having to play five days later is never an easy deal. For Hackensack, it was an opportunity not only for redemption but for the seniors to complete the foundation they had started.

No one exemplified the Comet resolve more than Mike Sanchez. The captain has been the vocal leader and on Thanksgiving Day he was a leader by example, as well.

Sanchez had the big block on the opening touchdown drive before adding a safety-sack and a TD catch, all in the first eight minutes of the game. Hackensack fed off of his inspired play and easily dispatched Teaneck, 48-0.

The win allowed the Comets to complete a 9-2 campaign, one that coach Benjie Wimberly said was a special one.

"We were 5-5 and 6-4 the last two years and this year we won a playoff game and went 9-2," he said. "These seniors are the cinder block in the foundation for the resurgence of this program and it was a real nice way to end the season."

Hackensack took the opening kickoff and went down the field, with Justin Marin skirting the right side for the final 14 yards and a 6-0 lead. That edge became 8-0 two plays later, when Sanchez chased down the Teaneck quarterback for a safety.

The Comets then took the free kick and marched back to the end zone, this time with Sanchez taking a pass away from a defender for an 11-yard score.

"We were all disappointed [after the loss to Montclair], but we didn't let it stop us," Sanchez said. "We went right back to work and took it out on Teaneck."

Workington Comets add third Danish rider to team

Published at 20:05, Thursday, 27 November 2014

Workington Comets have added a third Danish rider to their line-up for 2015.

Nicki Barrett

They have reached an agreement to sign 25-year-old Odense-born Nicki Barrett, who joined Peterborough Panthers midway through the summer and guested for the west Cumbrians last season.

Barrett has been loaned to Comets from parent club Berwick Bandits and joins on a 3.93 average, which means he will occupy one of the reserve spots.

He joins fellow countrymen Rene Bach and Kenneth Hansen in agreeing to ride at Derwent Park next year, as well as Australian Mason Campton who re-signed at the clubs end-of-season do.

Co-promoter and team manager Tony Jackson said: When he visited Derwent Park with the Panthers last season he proved to be very impressive at reserve and he clearly enjoyed the track.

However, there was some bad news for fans as it was also announced that last seasons number one Josh Grajczonek and popular reserve Simon Lambert wont be returning to the club.

The Comets management met with Grajczonek in October and he made it clear that while he wanted to come back to Workington in 2015, he needed to press on with his career and commit to riding in Poland, which meant until these deals were sorted he could not commit to Premier League racing.

The decision was made last night by the club to move on without Grajczonek.

In all four seasons as members of the MISL the Comets reached the playoffs, and won the championship on their fourth playoff appearance. This would be the final MISL championship.

After the 2013-2014 season, the team announced that it was leaving the MISL along with five other teams and join the MASL.[3]

Comets Spoil Crunch Comeback, 5-4

November 26, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Syracuse Crunch UTICA, N.Y. - Four days after the teams played in front of 30,715 fans at Syracuse University's Carrier Dome, the Syracuse Crunch (10-6-3-0) fell, 5-4, to the Utica Comets (13-4-2-0) tonight at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.

The Crunch tied the game with two goals in the third period, but Darren Archibald scored his second goal of the night with less than five minutes remaining to give the Comets the victory, knotting the season series at one win apiece.

"Even when we are down, we are not a team that quits. We battled until the end. That's the way we roll," said Philippe Paradis who collected two points in the game.

Yanni Gourde opened the scoring by burying a feed from Paradis inside the left post and past Utica netminder Joacim Eriksson 1:23 into the second period.

The Comets tied the game four minutes later with Brandon DeFazio sneaking the puck under Andrei Vasilevskiy from the right wing circle. Archibald then doubled the Comets lead halfway through the period. DeFazio and Will Acton were credited with the assists on Utica's second goal.

With Dylan Blujus in the box for tripping, Alexandre Grenier extended the Comets lead to 3-1 at the 15:42 mark of the second period. Grenier's power-play goal was assisted by Nicklas Jensen and Alex Biega. The Crunch answered back less than a minute later with a bouncing shot from Paradis that skipped by Eriksson's glove hand. Jake Dotchin and Gourde collected assists on Paradis' second goal of the season.

The Comets regained their two-goal lead with just over a minute left in the second period. Ronalds Kenins converted on Utica's fifth power-play opportunity of the game. Henrik Tommernes and Hunter Shinkaruk assisted on the play.

Syracuse scored two quick goals in the third period to even the score. Jonathan Marchessault struck first with a power-play goal at the 11:29 mark of the final frame that was assisted by Nikita Nesterov. Just over a minute later, Tanner Richard tied the game with his fourth goal of the season. Paradis and Gourde had assists, their second and third points, respectively.

Archibald's second goal of the game and third of the year, assisted by Jensen and Acton, proved to be the game winner.

The Crunch next return home to face the Binghamton Senators on Friday.

Archibald Powers Comets Past Crunch

November 26, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets The Utica Comets exacted revenge and got back to their winning ways all in one night with a 5-4 victory over the Syracuse Crunch on Wednesday at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.

Darren Archibald (2-1-3) lit up the scorer's sheet in this one. His two-goal night, including the game-winner, helped push the Comets to their first win in three games. Brandon DeFazio (1-1-2), Nicklas Jensen (0-2-2), and newcomer Will Acton (0-2-2) all contributed to the Comets success with two points apiece.

After a scoreless first period, the second stanza was the polar opposite with a total of six goals combined.

A little over one minute in to the second period, the Crunch broke the scoreless tie. Yanni Gourde followed up a diving shot from Phillipe Paradis, and popped in a rebound past Joacim Eriksson's right side for his ninth goal of the season.

The Comets didn't stray from their hard-checking game plan and found the equalizer 5:37 into the second period. After a battle along the boards, DeFazio retrieved the puck and stick-handled his way through the defense. The 25-year old winger sniped one clear to the far side of Andrei Vasilevskiy, who hadn't let a goal in since the first period of the Toyota Frozen Dome Classic this past Saturday. Archibald was credited with the only assist on the play. This was DeFazio's eighth goal and Archibald's fifth assist on the season.

Utica wanted the lead, and they got the lead at 11:27. After a 3-on-2 rush, DeFazio found his way around the back of Vasilevskiy's net and shot the puck towards the goaltender's right side. After a rebound and some confusion in front of the net, Archibald snuck the puck into the net for his second goal of the season. Will Acton recorded his first point as a Comet by tallying the secondary assist on the play.

Just four minutes later the Comets doubled their lead and found the back of the net again, this time on the power play. After a feed to Alex Biega from Jensen, Biega took one of his signature slapshots from the center point. The puck was blocked down by Vasilevskiy but Alexandre Grenier quickly found the rebound and slipped it by the Crunch goaltender for a power-play goal and a3-1 lead.

Syracuse quickly answered back just 27 seconds later from a Paradis slapshot that got deflected and bounced straight up over Eriksson's glove side to close the gap to 3-2. Jake Dotchin and Gourde both tallied assists on the play.

At the tail end of the second period, Utica re-gained their two-goal lead with another power-play goal at the 18:34 mark. After setting up on the attack, Hunter Shinkaruk fired a quick feed to Henrik Tommernes. Tommernes slipped it to Ronalds Kenins who took control of the puck and approached the hashmarks to the right on the Crunch's net. He fired a quick shot top shelf to the far side of the Syracuse goaltender to extend the Comets lead to 4-2.

Almost halfway through the third period, Syracuse mounted their comeback after Biega took a tripping penalty. At 11:29 Nikita Nesterov passed the puck to Jonathan Marchessault who buried a one-timer past Eriksson's right side for their first power-play goal of the night to make it 4-3.

Workington Comets have re-signed fans favourite Rene Bach for the 2015 season.

Rene Bach

The club has announced that the 24-year-old Danish speedway star will embark on his fourth consecutive season with the west Cumbrians next year.

Bach, who skippered Comets to the Premier League play-offs last season, becomes the second Danish rider to sign for Comets for next season.

Comets owner Laura Morgan said: We are all extremely pleased that Rene will be with us once again next season.

I know many supporters were left wondering if he would return following his speech at our last meeting but we certainly wanted him back and he said that Workington was the only place he wanted to be. So doing a deal was pretty easy in the end.

Without question he has a lot more to give and he is certainly capable of increasing his average substantially. Additionally, with his experience and outlook he brings a lot more to the team than the points he scores on the track.

He is always suggesting things that may improve the team and we certainly value his opinion.
