Comets Fall to Rampage 8-4

January 1, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets The Utica Comets fell to the San Antonio Rampage 8-4 on New Year's Day at The Utica Memorial Auditorium in their first regulation loss in 11 games. This also marks the first time the Comets have lost in regulation in front of a sell-out crowd at The AUD.

Despite offensive production from four different Comets players, San Antonio's goaltender Dan Ellis bested Utica in net with a total of 28 saves on 32 shots on net. Rampage forward, Bobby Butler (1-2-3), helped record the most offensive production on the team while being awarded the second star of the game.

After a handful of saves on both ends of the ice, San Antonio found the first goal of the night with just under three minutes left in the first period. Following a puck battle along the boards, Brett Olson retrieved the puck from the chaos behind Jacob Markstrom's net. Olson didn't hang on the puck for long and opted for a quick pass back out to the blue line from in between the hashmarks. Shane O'Brien received Olson's pass and immediately propelled the rubber over Markstrom's glove hand for the 1-0 lead. Butler was credited with the secondary assist.

The second period left a bitter taste in everyone's mouth except for San Antonio. In 11 minutes and 23 seconds, the Rampage scored six goals.

Their second of the game and first of the period came at 4:07 after Andrey Pedan took an interference penalty a minute prior. Drew Shore made a pass across the blue pain to Connor Brickley who then popped it past Markstrom's left side to make it 2-0. Wade Megan was also tallied an assist on the play.

Before San Antonio could unleash another attack, the Comets answered back roughly two minutes later. After Cal O'Reilly rushed into the neutral zone, the puck made its way to Pedan who then left the puck with Alex Biega. To finish the play, O'Reilly was waiting to the right side of Ellis' net to pop in the cross-ice pass from Biega to keep the score within one.

Despite the Comets efforts to fight back, Rampage continued on with their destruction. At 8:06 Butler forced the Comets to turn over the puck behind Markstrom's net. Oncer Butler had possession, he pass the puck to Garrett Wilson who took a point blank shot that popped between Markstrom's legs to make the two goal lead theirs once again with a score of 3-1.

The Comets next goal was the perfect definition of a give-and-go play. A minute and a half after San Antonio's last goal, Brandon DeFazio and Dustin Jeffrey rushed into the offensive zone. With two consecutive passes, the puck made its way to Biega's stick just above the center hashmarks. With a flick of the stick, Biega's wrist shot was buried top shelf over Ellis' glove hand for a shorthanded goal to make it 3-2.

San Antonio scored another at 10:45 on a 5-on-3 opportunity. With one slapshot from Rocco Grimaldi and a tip in front of the net by Jesse Blacker, the Rampage made the score 4-2 on the power-play goal. Mark Mancari took credit for the secondary assist.

Immediately one minute after, the Comets answered back for the last time of the period with a DeFazio wrist shot. After some board play by O'Reilly and Wacey Hamilton, the puck found its way to DeFazio who netted his 14th of the season to make it 4-3.

Comets Remain Undefeated After Defeating the Milwaukee Wave 8-7

December 31, 2014 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) Missouri Comets Milwaukee, Wi. (December 31, 2014) - What seemed like a soothing victory for the Comets turned into a nightmare in the last minutes of the fourth quarter when the Milwaukee Wave scored five times to tie the match 7-7 with 0:02 left in the match forcing a scoreless overtime followed by shootouts where goalkeeper Danny Waltman handed the reigning MISL Champions their tenth consecutive victory.

Forward Leo Gibson regained the top of the Major Arena Soccer League standings with a total of 41 points scoring the first goal of the evening and recording an assist, while Bryan Perez had a hat trick and one assist.

Head Coach Vlatko Andonovski's team only dressed 12 players as Max Touloute and Ramone Palmer missed the match due to groin and hamstring injuries respectively.

Shortly after kick off, the home team took the lead after Tony Walls notched the first goal of the game. However Gibson tied the match moments later followed by team captain's Vahid Assadpour only tally of the night before Milwaukee's Marcio Leite tied the match to end the first quarter 2-2.

Bryan Perez found the back of the net for the first time in the game, while Alain Matingou extended the lead after pushing in an Assadpour assist to take a 4-2 lead to the locker rooms.

The third quarter saw the Comets increase the lead when Perez assisted again by Assadpour tallied his second goal before Brian Harris hit a rocket, which goalkeeper Nick Vorberg was unable to save ending the quarter with a partial 6-2 score.

Down a man for five minutes due to a yellow card shown to Waltman late in the third, the Wave gained momentum and scored four straight goals, which came off of Luan Oliveira, JC Banks and Ian Bennett (twice) to tie the match.

With three and a half minutes left in the game, Perez completed his hat trick beating Vorberg with a deadly free kick to make it 7-6 forcing the Wave to take Vorberg out and add a sixth attacker, which resulted in a controversial equalizer with less than a second on the clock.

Andonovski received a red card at the end of regulation and the Comets played down a man for the first couple of overtime minutes but Milwaukee was not able to score the golden goal in addition to a pair of missed chances by the visitors.

Waltman left his goal and began an attacking play with five seconds left in the ten-minute stanza but was intercepted before Jonathan Greenfield tried luck from his own half looking to put the ball inside the empty goal but a handball from John Sosa denied his attempt. Oliveira was unable to convert the shootout.

(December 30, 2014) - The undefeated Missouri Comets (9-0) will try to end the year on a good note after recording the team's best ever start to a season with nine consecutive victories. However, that task won't be easy, as the reigning MISL Champions will visit longtime rivals Milwaukee Wave (6-4) this Wednesday at the Milwaukee Panther Arena.

Fans are encouraged to join the official watch party hosted by Comets Nation at Coach's Bar & Grill located at 414 West 103rd Street, Kansas City, MO 64114 .

The Missouri Comets and the Milwaukee Wave have met on 32 occasions in all competition since 2010, each team winning sixteen games. Eleven of those 32 matches have come during the MISL playoffs, where the Comets have a 6-5 lead over the Wave.

Head Coach Vlakto Andonovski's team will enter the match as one of the only two undefeated teams in the inaugural season of the Major Arena Soccer League. Last Saturday, the Comets earned a hard fought 10-7 victory over the San Diego Sockers at the Independence Events Center.

The Wave stand second in the Central Division only behind the Comets having won their last two matches against the Tulsa Revolution and the Detroit Waza Flo both at home after falling twice in two days against the Baltimore Blast earlier this month.

Both teams have already met once this season. The Comets came back twice on November 15 to snatch a 9-7 victory from Head Coach Giuliano Oliviero's team.

"I know our guys are really looking forward to seeing how we match up against the leagues best," Oliviero said. "We're going to give them everything we got."

"They will be looking for revenge, looking to close the gap between us for first place and will try to put a loss in our perfect season," Touloute said. "Over the course of the first nine games, we have established that we are on of the top teams in the league and in my mind, the top."

Blue Comets regroup to thrash Jets

ASHEBORO Asheboro High School turned up the tempo in the second quarter against Jordan-Matthews in the third-place game of The Courier-Tribune Christmas Invitational, and changed the tide of the game in its favor while doing so. The Blue Comets stifling defense and up-and-down offense fueled them to the 85-53 win over the Jets.

We had something to prove after last night, AHS coach Brian Nance said of his teams two-point loss to Randleman in the semifinals.

In the second quarter, the Blue Comets used a 16-0 run to take a 30-21 lead to start the frame. The Jets went almost five minutes without scoring to start the second quarter. Emanuel Jones and Tazmine Dunn scored all but two of the points during the run and came up with most of the steals on the defensive end that allowed for the AHS offense to explode in the second quarter.

Things unraveled for us when the tempo picked up, J-M coach P.J. Lowman said.

The Blue Comets defense was the main reason they were able to take the lead as their halfcourt defense forced turnovers that led to run-out scores.

We played hard, and our defense created opportunities for us tonight, Nance said.

After being held scoreless in the semifinal game against Randleman, Dunn had 14 points in the second quarter alone. He finished with 23 to lead all scorers and had big plays on both sides of the ball to give the Jets problems.

He creates a lot of problems for teams on offense and defense, Nance said of his junior guard. Tonight we saw that when he is in the game, we are a different team.

Jones played most of the game as aggressive as he was in the fourth quarter of the loss to Randleman, finishing with 17 points.

Hes grown up a lot this year, Nance said. I think he is realizing hes a good athlete if he keeps his mind positive.

Comets ice Cole leader

Theres always a level of calm when watching Casey Cole play field hockey.

No matter how big the stakes, the Crestwood senior approaches every game situation with a measured intensity.

That drive has led to quite a bit of success in the Comets red and white and why Cole has been selected the 2014 Times Leader Field Hockey Player of the Year.

You have to stay poised during the game of field hockey, Cole said. As soon as you start to panic, thats when you start to make mental errors and messing up on the basics. You always have to stay poised and confident.

Its not the kind of thing you can teach explained first-year head coach Patsy Moratori, who has known Cole since she was a little girl. Its not something you inherit even if your mom did win a state field hockey championship.

It comes from a belief, a confidence in ones ability, in the year-round training and most importantly, in the abilities of teammates.

Its part of her make up, said Moratori, who took over for long-time head coach Elvetta Gemski this season. Shes been that way since shes been a freshman. Being there (midfield) for three years, thats not usually the case in high school. Thats a senior position, a junior position, not really a come and play as a sophomore position.

The Comets finished with a 23-1-1 overall record and were a perfect 10-0 in the Wyoming Valley Conference. During that stretch, Cole scored 11 goals, dished out 13 assists and was asked to mark some of the best offensive players in the state.

During the semifinals of the PIAA Field Hockey Championships against Oley Valley, the No. 2 seed from District 3, Moratoris game plan to stop Oley Valleys leading scorer Carly Kauffman (32 goals, 17 assists) was simple.

We just put Casey on her and told her she had to stay on tight said Moratori after the game on Nov. 11. We didnt give a lot of extra attention. We just told Casey OK, shes yours mark her and were pretty sure that it would get done if we tell her thats her job.

Comets Remain Undefeated

December 27, 2014 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) Missouri Comets INDEPENDENCE, MO - The Missouri Comets faced their toughest challenge of the season but came out with a tight 10-7 victory over the San Diego Sockers to remain undefeated in the 2014/15 Major Arena Soccer League season on Saturday night at the Independence Events Center.

Defender Brian Harris was named the Borden Man of the Match with a four-point match recording two goals and two assists, while team leader Leo Gibson added three more points to his name with two tallies and one assist.

Two weeks after having defeated the Wichita B-52s for the second time in the season, Head Coach Vlatko Andonovski's team came back twice to earn their ninth consecutive victory over San Diego who will visit the St. Louis Ambush on Sunday.

Only fourteen seconds into the match, San Diego's Kraig Chiles found the back of the net followed by a tally from Ney five minutes later to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. However, the reigning MISL Champions scored back-to-back goals courtesy of Harris, Gibson and team captain Vahid Assadpour in less than a five-minute span to end the quarter with a 3-2 lead.

Each team would score twice in the second stanza. Less than two minutes into the quarter, goalkeeper Danny Waltman led an attack after controlling the ball all the way to San Diego's box, which ended in Alain Matingou's first tally of the evening.

Another goal by Assadpour gave the Comets a 5-2 lead before Chiles and Nick Perera notched two goals to end the half with a partial 6-5 score.

The half time break featured some of Kansas City's most renowned media members such as Jake Yadrich from Sporting Kansas City, Nick Vasos, Shannon Oleen, Holly Starr among others play a scrimmage game, which ended in a 1-1 tie.

San Diego came back to the field with an offensive mindset and regained the lead when Ney and former Comets player Jeff Hughes beat Waltman to make it 7-6 before Max Touloute tied the match with four minutes left in the quarter.

Three consecutive goals for the Comets in the fourth quarter scored by Gibson, Harris and Matingou forced the visitors to put in a sixth attacker for the last five minutes, which resulted in another goal from Chiles before Assadpour sealed the victory with a goal from his own half to end the match 10-7.

Next up, the Comets will visit the Milwaukee Wave on New Year's eve at 7:00 p.m. before visiting the St. Louis Ambush on January 3.

Sockers Stumble 10-7 to Missouri Comets

December 28, 2014 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) San Diego Sockers INDEPENDENCE, MO--Leo Gibson snapped a 6-6 tie with his second goal of the night and the Missouri Comets used a four-goal run in the fourth quarter to secure a 10-7 victory over the San Diego Sockers in front of 4.218 at the Independence Events Center. Kraig Chiles scored a hat trick in the losing effort for the Sockers (6-2), who will take on St. Louis Ambush on Sunday afternoon.

"It was a good game of indoor soccer all the way around and a tough result, said Chiles, who has scored nine goals in the past two games, "Momentum was with us in the third quarter and then it seemed to shift away and we were unable to recover."

A highly anticipated battle between last year's defending MISL champions, the Missouri Comets (9-0), and the four-time PASL champion Sockers proved to be the type of game that Major Arena Soccer League fans have been craving. San Diego stunned the host Comets by scoring off the kickoff just fourteen seconds into the game on a Chiles back-post tap-in, and when Brazilian rookie Ney (two goals, assist) scored on Mati Kruger's feed with 9:31 in the first, the Sockers had a 2-0 lead.

The Comets came into the night as the MASL's top scoring team and proved their offensive ability with a quick three-goal burst to take the lead. Brian Harris scored on a corner kick before a giveaway in the defensive end turned into a Gibson goal and a 2-2 tie with 8:07 left in the first quarter. Less than three minutes later Sockers defender Eduardo Velez was called for a defensive clear and the Comets converted the top-box free kick into a goal by Missouri captain Vahid Assadpour for a 3-2 lead after one quarter.

Goals by Alain Matingue and Assadpour pushed the Comets' advantage to 5-2 in the second quarter, but late goals by Chiles and Nick Perera helped San Diego narrow the deficit to 5-4 at the half. When Ney converted a counter-attack on a pass from Velez to start the second half the Sockers had leveled the score 5-5. Jeff Hughes then gave San Diego a 6-5 lead, scoring when he crashed the crease and then finished a back-heel pass from Perera.

A series of penalty calls helped swing the momentum of the contest midway through the third quarter. The Sockers earned a power play when Matias Kruger was boarded with 7:41 to play, but just eleven seconds later the blue card was out again, with Chiles whistled on a make-up call to end the advantage and put the teams 4-v-4. Moments later, a giveaway forced Toth to tackle Comets attacker Max Touloute outside his penalty crease, and the Comets were awarded a shootout. Gibson's shootout attempt was blocked by San Diego keeper Chris Toth (eight saves) and the Sockers killed the penalty, but the Comets caught San Diego with their penalty killers still on the field at the end of their shifts and took advantage on Touloute's fourteenth goal of the season for a 6-6 tie.

The score was still 6-6 to start the fourth quarter but the Sockers found themselves back on the penalty kill after a questionable penalty called on Chiky Luna, who was carded for boarding in the final second of the third frame. Gibson admitted on the field to having slipped. While the Sockers again successfully killed the penalty, fortune frowned upon the visitors when a Gibson wall pass kicked off the seam between the goal glass and the boards and took a funny backward spin, falling into the San Diego net for a 7-6 Missouri lead at 12:15.

Moments later things took a serious turn for the worse when Ney was injured on a tackle in the defensive zone, suffering a sprained right ankle. The injury was ruled a soft tissue injury instead of a break and Ney is expected to miss less than four weeks, a devastating injury to the rookie who had netted eight points in his first two MASL games.

The Comets then took control when Harris toe-poked a steal between the legs of Hughes and rifled a long shot home from the yellow line for an 8-6 lead. Matingue's second goal of the game made it 9-6, and while the Sockers scored using a sixth attacker to complete Chiles' hat trick, Assadpour completed a hat trick of his own with a chip from beyond midfield to complete the scoring.

San Diego (6-2) moves on to battle the St. Louis Ambush on Sunday afternoon at 4:35pm Pacific time.

DeFazio's Hat Trick Powers Comets

December 27, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets In a 6-3 final decision against the Lake Erie Monsters at The Utica Memorial Auditorium on Saturday night, the Comets closed out the month of December with a 7-0-3-0 record with a total of 17 points out of a possible 20.

Brandon DeFazio (3-0-3), the first star of the game might be able to open up his own hat store after tonight's hat trick just moments into the second period. Hamilton (1-1-2), Darren Archibald (1-1-2) and Dustin Jeffrey (0-2-2) also contributed to the Comets second victory this season over the Monsters.

The Comets came out hard and fast and their efforts showed up quickly on the scoreboard just moments into beginning of the first period. At 6:45 DeFazio received a short pass directly between the hashmarks from Darren Archibald. DeFazio snapped the rubber off of the blade of his stick only to bury it top shelf past Flames goaltender Roman Will for the 1-0 lead for his first goal of the night. Travis Ehrhardt received the secondary assist on the play.

Just 18 seconds into the second stanza, the Monsters and the fans at The AUD realized DeFazio's wheels hadn't stopped turning. After a quick bout of shots taken on Will, the Czech Republic native was unable to control every re-bound outside of his crease. As the puck popped out of his possession for the third consecutive time, DeFazio found the puck to his right side and emptied in to the mesh for his second goal of the night to make it 2-0. Dustin Jeffrey and Andrey Pedan both received assists after their shot attempts.

And just moments later at 3:46, hats began to hit the ice.

After pick-pocketing one of the Lake Erie defensemen at the blue-line, DeFazio rushed into the offensive zone on a breakaway. In one swift move to deke Will in the opposite direction, DeFazio shot the puck and lifted it past Will's blocker side for the hat-trick goal, and his twelve of the season, which is just shy five goals of the 17 he scored last season for the Comets.

Even with the 3-0 lead, the Comets weren't letting up on the Cleveland hockey club. At 15:31, Carter Bancks fed a cross-ice saucer pass to Hamilton in a play that might be best explained as 'too close for comfort.'

Hamilton popped the puck in past Will's right side and immediately took the net with him as he crashed into the boards. With the net coming off after the puck had crossed the line, Hamilton was credited with the fourth Comets goal of the night to make it a four nothing game. John Negrin was credited with the secondary assist.

After letting in three goals in the second period, the Monsters thought it was time for a goaltending change for the start of the third period. Sami Aittokallio replaced Will in net for his first game since Dec. 13.

It only took 6 minutes into the final period for the Comets to bury one past the new opposing goaltender. After a pass to Brendan Gaunce from Alex Biega near the top of the circle, Gaunce pinpointed his target and sniped the puck over Aittokallio's glove for a power-play goal to give the Comets the five nothing lead.

Comets Make It Five Straight vs. the Flames

December 26, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets The Comets continue to haunt the Adirondack Flames after Friday night's 2-1 victory at The Utica Memorial Auditorium. Tonight marks the fifth consecutive win against the Flames for the Vancouver Canucks' American Hockey League affiliate.

Frank Corrado (1-1-2), and Hunter Shinkaruk (1-0-1) showed up for the after Christmas special in Friday night's win over their North division rivals. Out of Shinkaruk's five goals on the season, four of them have been game-winning goals including tonight's third period goal. Jacob Markstrom stopped 17 of the 18 shots he faced in his second consecutive game and improved his overall season record to a 9-1-1-0 and his goals-against average to a remarkable 1.63.

It took an opening face-off fight and most of the entire first period for the Comets to find the net, but they were able to bury one past Joni Ortio with only one minute and 3 seconds left in the opening period. After O'Reilly played keep-away near the blue line, the Comets captain dished it over to Corrado. After a quick release, Corrado slipped one through Ortio's left arm for the 1-0 lead and his fourth goal of the season. Kane Lafranchise received the secondary assist on the play for his seventh on the season.

Just 10 seconds into the second stanza, the Flames tied the game back up. After a quick entry into the Comets zone, Tyler Wotherspoon took a straight shot towards Markstrom's net from the point. Bryce Van Brabant met the puck halfway to the net and deflected it past an un-expecting Markstrom for the equalizer. Michael Ferland was credited with the secondary assist on the play.

The Comets finally found the go-ahead goal almost halfway through the third period at 7:27. Corrado received the puck from Ronalds Kenins at the blue line and delivered the puck directly to the front of the net. The bouncing puck was uncontrollable for Ortio as Shinkaruk met him on the doorstep. The rookie forward popped it past the right side of the Finnish goaltender for the 2-1 game-winning goal and his fifth of the season.

Even with the security of the one goal lead, the Comets almost slipped into yet another overtime game. In the remaining seconds of the third period, things almost came crumbling down for the league leading Comets as the puck popped through Markstrom's pads and almost crossed the line before the buzzer. After video review it was determined that the puck had never crossed the line before the time expired.

The heart attack that was Friday night's Comets game has kept Utica in first place among the entire league with a total of 45 points and also has secured Comets Head Coach Travis Green with a Head Coaching spot on the bench for the AHL 2015 All-Star Classic that takes place Jan. 25-26, 2015 in Utica, N.Y.

In less than 24 hours the Comets will be right back at The AUD on Saturday night to face the Lake Erie Monsters for the second time this season at 7 p.m. During their first meeting on Nov. 7, the Monsters were defeated by the Comets and Joacim Eriksson for a 4-1 final decision.

Girls basketball: Hawks hang on against Comets

BY CODY CUTTER ccutter@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5555

DIXON Throughout its opening-round game at the KSB Holiday Tournament in Dixon, the Oregon Hawks stuck with its usual zone defense against the Newman Comets.

While the vastly-different Hawks offense kept a lead on the Comets, they were never able to get comfortable. As the seconds ticked away in the fourth quarter to a mere 2.4, the Comets were only within one point and had the ball at mid-court.

Thats when Oregon coach Kristy Eckardt decided to switch things up. For the first time in the game, the Hawks switched to a man defense which was able to force a tip out-of-bounds, and then a shot attempt not from lead scorer Kelsey Simpson but from Sarah Trujillo 14 feet from the basket.

Trujillos shot to try to give her team its third win of the year bounced off the rim, preserving a 43-42 Oregon win at Lancaster Gym.

We wanted to throw them off because we had been running our zone defense the whole game, Oregon junior guard Anni Wilson said. We wanted to throw them off and see how they would react to a man. We were trying to cut off No. 23 [Simpson] because she made a lot of shots, so our goal was to cut her off and we did real well on that.

We were wanting to get the ball to Kelsey Simpson, Newman coach Brandon Kreczmer said. Shes been our lead scorer and our best shooter. They took her away, and I called another timeout to use her as a decoy. We just couldnt get a good shot in. Im just happy that they battled back in the end.

The Hawks (10-4), by the slim margin, move on to todays second-round meeting with United Township at 2:30. Theyll do so without the services of its lead scorer in Emy Wright.

Wright tore her ACL during the Hawks finale at the Polo tournament last Thursday, and was on crutches as she watched her team from two rows up behind the bench. She will be out for the remainder of the season.

It was a bummer Christmas present, Eckhart said. They were very positive and were all supporting Emy. The girls came out, and no one was scared. They all knew they had their roles to play, and now everyone just has to pick it up a little. But they did well stepping into their spots.
