Canucks farm team continues its torrid pace as Comets down Griffins 4-2

In their first ever meeting the Utica Comets defeated the Grand Rapids Griffins 4-2 Wednesday evening The Utica Memorial Auditorium to improve their overall season record to 24-8-5-0.

Dustin Jeffrey (2-1-3) led the way for the Comets with three points. Alexandre Grenier (1-1-2) and Carter Bancks (1-0-1) registered the other two goals for the Comets to help finalize the Comets four-goal night. Jacob Markstrom started in his second game in a row and put on another stellar performance for the fans at The AUD by saving 26 on the 28 shots he faced from the Griffins.

After an entertaining, yet scoreless first period, the Comets found the back of the net at 1:04 after the start of the second stanza. In a play that can only be credited to Brendan Gaunce for the successful set-up, Jeffrey received the puck just as Gaunce had slipped it over the blue line past a Griffins defenseman. Once Jeffrey was in all alone with Griffins goaltender Jared Coreau, he unleashed a quick deke on an attempt to bury one on the backhand. Coreau was able to deflect the shot with his pad but Jeffrey quickly picked up the rebound to the right of the net. With a little patience, Jeffrey noticed Coreau was out of position and took the opportunity to bury it from an awkward angle, which ended up going far-side top-shelf for the 1-0 lead.

Exactly two minutes and five seconds later, Jeffrey scored his second goal of the night on a power-play opportunity. It began with a shot from Grenier from the point who got it inside of the blue paint for Brandon DeFazio. After some puck fumbling in front, Jeffrey retrieved the puck to the right of Coreau and without any hesitation, Jeffrey snapped it into the mesh to make it 2-0.

Later on in the period at 12:31, the Griffins decided to answer back on a power play of their own just 15 seconds after Andrey Pedan went to the box for a tripping call. Alexey Marchenko banged one in from the point directly past Markstrom to keep the score within one. Scott Czarnowczan and Marek Tvrdon were both credited with assists.

Luckily for the Comets, Brennan Evans took a slashing penalty on Gaunce just prior to the ending of the second period. The power-play opportunity carried into the third period of play, which is exactly where the Comets found their next goal.

At 1:01 into the third period, Jeffrey led the attack at the point and fed the puck over to Sanguinetti on the right side. Sanguinetti took one hard blast and the puck met Greniers stick in front of Coreaus net. The puck ended up deflecting and snuck past Coreau for the Comets second power-play goal of the night to make it 3-1.

Just 38 seconds later, the Griffins found their second goal of the night while setting up on the attack in the Comets zone. After receiving a pass from Mitch Callahan, Ryan Sproul took a slapshot from the point towards the Comets net. Andy Miele met with the puck halfway to its destination and deflected the shot past Markstrom to make the score 3-2.

The Comets finally put an end to the madness at 19:02 just after the Griffins had pulled Coreau for the extra-attacker. Carter Bancks guided the unassisted puck to the empty net for his fourth goal of the season for a final decision of 4-2.

Its Pink the Rink night this Friday in what will be the Comets third and final game of their three-game home stand. The breastcancer awareness and fundraising event will host the Milwaukee Admirals at The AUD for a 7 p.m. matchup in what will be the first meeting this season between the two clubs. Immediately following the game, there will be a live auction for the Comets pink-accented jerseys at center ice. All money raised will be donated to the Breast Care Center of the Regional Cancer Center at Faxton St. Lukes Healthcare.

Rosetta's new to do: hunt for sugars in comet ice?

The European Space Agency's Rosetta mission may have a new set of primordial chemicals to hunt for as the spacecraft scrutinizes 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

A team of chemists from France and Mexico reports finding what it says is the first evidence for a range of organic molecules known as aldehydes in the residue of lab-made ices. These ices were designed to simulate those found in the clouds of gas, dust, and ices between stars.

Of particular interest are a pair of sugar-like aldehydes found in some of the residue. These aldehydes are known to be important actors in the formation of DNA, which carries an organism's genetic information, and of RNA. RNA plays a number of important biological roles, including service as a genetic traffic cop for the production of proteins in cells.

Six of the 10 aldehydes the team found have been detected in space, including one of the two sugar-like aldehydes. But none of the sugar-like versions have been detected within the solar system, and one of the two has yet to be found at all in space.

The team's results imply that both of these "pre-biotic" molecules, as well as the rest of the aldehydes they produce, should be forming within interstellar ices.

If the results hold up and especially if Rosetta's robotic lander Philae can detect them on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko the work would provide another piece of evidence pointing to comets and asteroids as the the mobile chemistry labs that deposited the building blocks for organic life on a young Earth.

In space, ices form in large molecular clouds from simple molecules mainly water, with smatterings of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methanol, ammonia, and methane. When the ices are subjected to ultraviolet radiation from young stars and from heat, these building blocks can combine to make biologically important compounds such as amino acids.

The densest portions of these clouds collapse to form stars and planets, as well as the comets and asteroids that represent the leftovers from the era of planet-building.

For years, researchers have been conducting lab experiments that try to replicate the conditions in molecular clouds, bathing the ices in various levels of ultraviolet radiation or the lab equivalent of cosmic rays. The goal is to figure out how much of the pre-biotic chemistry on Earth was unique to the planet and how much "pre-processing" might have occurred in space.

In its experiment, a team led by Louis Le Sergeant dHendecourt, with the Institut dAstrophysique Spatiale at the Universit Paris-Sud, and Uwe Meierhenrich, with the Universit Nice-Sophia Antipolis in Nice, France, started off with a mixture of 12 parts water, 3.5 parts methanol, and 1 part ammonia. The ice was cooled in a vacuum to -319 degrees Fahrenheit and bathed in ultraviolet light. The experimental equipment had been carefully cleaned and sterilized to prevent contamination.

Markstrom, Comets Continue Dominance over Flames

January 10, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets For the seventh consecutive time this season, Jacob Markstrom and the Utica Comets beat the Adirondack Flames 4-1 Saturday night at The Utica Memorial Auditorium.

In what can only be described as an All-Star performance from a goaltender who will be playing in the All-Star game later this month, Jacob Markstrom stood on his head tonight making a total of 42 saves on the 43 shots he faced from the Flames. Four separate Comets players recorded goals and rookie Brendan Gaunce (0-2-2) helped fulfill the Comets' desire to end their two-game losing streak by tallying two assists for the night.

After last night's scoreless venture in Hamilton, Ontario, the Comets wanted to make a quick splash on the scoreboard and that they did. Merely two minutes into the first stanza, Emile Poirer took a tripping penalty after what was already 4-on-4 play for the two clubs. Just 16 seconds after the Flames began their penalty kill, the Comets ended it at 2:08. While beginning their offensive attack, Alexandre Grenier noticed Dustin Jeffrey on his way to the crease and made the pass as the veteran forward reached Brad Thiessen's personal space. With a spin to avoid the backhander, Jeffrey poked the puck through the veteran goaltender's legs to abolish the Comets' power-play drought for the 1-0 lead.

Adirondack answered back just over four minutes later on a wrap-around by David Wolf. Once the German forward realized Markstrom moved to the opposite post, Wolf switched gears and wrapped the puck on the open side for the 1-1 equalizer. Mathieu Tousignant and Nonlan Yonkman were both credited with assists on Adirondack's first goal of the night.

At 10:57 the Comets had the go-ahead goal and never looked back. Brandon DeFazio centered a pass to Darren Archibald and a wrist shot was all it took for the Comets forward to bury it top shelf over Thiessen's shoulder to make it 2-0. Bobby Sanguinetti received the secondary assist on the play.

In tried and true fashion, the Comets found more action in the second period of play. At 7:58 Gaunce made his way down the right wing looking for an opportunity to shoot. What looked like an odd angle to take a shot from, young rookie Will Acton tipped the puck in past Thiessen for the Comets' third goal of the night to strengthen their lead by 2.

For the Comets' fourth goal it was re-bound central for a Comets defensemen who has not seen much action near the front of the net so far this season. After a quick shot on net by Gaunce, Thiessen left a re-bound to his right side ready for the taking. Once Kent Huskins saw the opportunity, he rushed up to bury the golden opportunity at 10:19 for his first of the year to make the score 4-1. Hometown native Mike Zalewski received the secondary assist on the play.

After Saturday night's victory over the Adirondack Flames, the Vancouver Canucks American Hockey League affiliate now have reached a total of 51 points on the season and have widened the gap to four points over their North Division rivals. In seven games this season, the Comets have outscored the Flames 22-9.

The Comets won't be skipping town any time soon because their next game at The AUD is this Wednesday at 7 p.m. against the Detroit Red Wings AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. This will be the first meeting between the two teams in the history of either franchise.

Comets Silenced 3-0 in the Doghouse

January 9, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets In their second consecutive loss, the Utica Comets were shutout by the Hamilton Bulldogs 3-0 at the FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton Ontario. This is the first time the Comets have had back-to-back regulation losses since Nov. 21-22.

Hamilton's goaltender Mike Condon was awarded the first star of the game for successfully recording his first American Hockey League shutout while stopping all 33 shots he faced from the Comets.

After an uneventful first half of the beginning stanza, the game tilted towards Hamilton's favor after they scored their first goal at 15:29. Even though it was an even-man situation at the time of the goal, the Comets were playing as if they still had an odd-man disadvantage with Will Acton just skating out of the box at the time of the goal.

T.J. Hensick got it all going for the Bulldogs as he made a centering pass to Drayson Bowman. A quick wristshot put the puck on net, but was blocked away by Joacim Eriksson. However the rebound was ready for the taking as Nick Sorkin popped it in past Eriksson's blocker side for the 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs found their second of the night at the tail end of the third period with exactly six minutes left in the game. From behind Eriksson's net, Gabriel Dumont passed the puck to Maxime Macenauer who was left alone in front of the Comets goaltender. With a quick release, the Bulldogs centerman lifted it past Eriksson's glove hand to make it 2-0. Daniel Carr received credit for the secondary assist.

Immediately after Eriksson was pulled for the extra-attacker, Jacob de la Rose scored an open-netter to finalize the score at 3-0. Gabriel Dumont and Daniel Carr both tallied their second assists of the night on the Bulldogs third goal.

After Friday night's loss, the Comets will look to make things right in front of an eager Utica crowd tomorrow night. The Comets will host their North Division rivals, the Adirondack Flames for the seventh time this season at The Utica Memorial Auditorium at 7 p.m. In their six previous meetings the Comets have gone undefeated against the Flames.

January 9, 2015 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) Missouri Comets INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (January 9, 2015) - The undefeated Missouri Comets (11-0) return to the Independence Events Center this Saturday after back-to-back victories on the road against the Milwaukee Wave and the St. Louis Ambush to host the Tulsa Revolution (1-8) with their sights set on a twelfth consecutive win.

Still injured, Coady Andrews (ankle), Max Touloute (groin) and Ramone Palmer (hamstring) will not be able to play. However, former Sporting Kansas City player Josh Gardner is expected to make his arena soccer debut after signing with the Comets on Wednesday.

Both teams will face off for the second time this season after the reigning MISL Champions defeated the Revolution 15-5 at the Cox Business Center on December 6.

Head Coach David Yates' team has struggled to get positive results throughout the season dropping eight matches and recording only one victory, which came against Texas last November 14. The Revolution are coming from a devastating loss after falling 16-2 at the Sears Centre.

On the other hand, the Comets recorded their best ever start to a season six games ago and continue to dominate on the field recording eleven consecutive victories, most recently defeating the St. Louis Ambush 8-5 at the Family Arena.

Forward Leo Gibson will try to regain the top of the MASL standings where he currently stands second only after Seattle's Gordy Gurson who has three more points than the Monrovia, Liberia native.

Brazilian midfielder Lucas Bunster Almeida leads the Revolution with 17 points (seven goals and 10 assists).

Next up, the Comets will host the I-70 Series Part Two at the Independence Events Center when they host the St. Louis Ambush next Saturday.
