Developing NHL players no doubt requires significant attention to skating and stick-on-puck skills, plus building up strength and size to compete amid the physicality of today's game. But a vital ingredient of winning hockey is establishing team chemistry at the American Hockey League and ECHL affiliate levels.

Two Kraken developing pros, Connor Carrick and Cale Fleury (recently added to the Seattle taxi squad) are exhibiting the team-first mentality and resilience general manager Ron Francis and the Kraken hockey operations group seek in all prospects and developing players.

The COVID-19 pandemic severely shortened the list of available players for the Checkers in recent games. Carrick and Fleury played monster minutes as the only two regular Charlotte defensemen able to suit up for a recent 4-1 comeback victory. More impressively, Carrick and Fleury mentored four defensemen and a goalie during the win, all playing up a level on player tryouts and learning the Charlotte systems of play shift by shift in a regular season game.

"They took on a huge role [guiding the young defensemen], but the game is about opportunity," Checkers head coach Geordie Kinnear said. "Opportunity is what you make of it. You have to do the work prior to make the most of it. These guys continue to make the most of their opportunity.

With Charlotte down 1-0, Carrick put his team on the board with a shorthanded goal during an early third-period power play. The Checkers bench and home crowd roared at the momentum-changing score. Charlotte forward and Kraken developing pro Kole Lind tallied the game-winning second goal.

"I thought our leaders really stepped up in the third period," Kinnear told Checkers reporter Nicholas Niedzielski. "You look at Connor and you look at 'Flower' [Fleury]. They really took it to another level for us. It was a great third period. We found a way to win."

It marked Carrick's fifth goal of the year. He was more focused on the boost for his teammates. The Checkers are now 11-6 since the beginning of January with Carrick and Fleury contributing in meaningful ways to the winning culture.

"We wanted to get it to 1-1 and we didn't like where we were at," Carrick said. "It just kind of levels the game a little bit. A lot of their best players are going to be on the power play, so you throw a dagger like that and now they're on their heels."

NCAA No. 3 Michigan split last weekend's series with Big Ten Conference rival, No. 11 Minnesota, losing in a shootout the first night and winning the second game behind a game-winning goal and an assist from Kraken top prospect Matty Beniers.

The Wolverines travel to Madison, Wisc., this weekend to face the Wisconsin Badgers. After the weekend set, Beniers will meet up with his Team USA Olympics teammates in Los Angeles and a subsequent flight to Beijing for the Winter Games.

The Kraken's second-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, defenseman Ryker Evans, likely thought he would be traveling himself. There was significant media speculation that Evans would be traded from the Western Hockey League's Regina Pats to another WHL team before the league's trade deadline Jan. 14.

But instead, Evans will lead Regina in its push to make the WHL playoffs. Every standings point counts, so despite losing in a shootout last week, Evans and his power-play teammates were successful enough to get the game into overtime and notch a point in the standings. Evans, the Pats' man-advantage "quarterback," scored a goal on one power play and added an assist on another.

Evans and the power play continued the momentum in a 4-0 win Tuesday, with Evans assisting on a man-advantage goal, which proved to be the game-winner. He leads the Pats in scoring with six goals and 31 assists in 34 games.

When Max McCormick rejoined AHL Charlotte after his callup to the Kraken, the forward made himself quite comfortable in the lineup. He scored two goals and notched three assists in three games, earning him Charlotte's First Star of the Week.

McCormick's scoring prowess included a wraparound goalthat evened the score in the Checkers' other win against two losses in a four-game week. Kraken developing pro Carsen Twarynski (three goals, 10 assists) scored a shorthanded goal to ice the victory.

Integrating Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Medicine to Optimize Radiopharmaceutical Therapy – Argonne National Laboratory

Abstract: Radiopharmaceutical therapy poses a unique set of opportunities and challenges. This is the only form of radiation therapy that can target cancer cells precisely at the cellular level, a key requirement for eliminating circulating tumor cells, disseminated tumor cells, and oligometastases. Yet this distinct advantage over other radiation therapies also poses challenges for harnessing its power and for developing predictive dose response relationships. Each radionuclide (and daughter radionuclide) emits a unique set of radiations with different linear energy transfer and ranges in tissue. These can include Auger electrons, conversion electrons, particles, x rays, rays, and particles. The relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of these radiations can depend on the subcellular distribution of the radionuclide in the tissue of interest and on radiation dose rate patterns that are dictated principally by radiopharmacokinetics and the range of the emitted radiations. Recent advances have improved our capacity to develop predictive dose response relationships and harness the power of radiopharmaceutical therapy. Among the advancements that will be discussed are the importance of activity distributions, dose rate patterns, and RBE. Recognizing that distribution of the radiopharmaceutical at the cellular level trumps RBE of the radiations emitted, novel approaches to distribute the dose more uniformly over the targeted cell population will also be discussed. Finally, the role of radiation-induced bystander effects in radiopharmaceutical therapy will also be discussed.

Chemistry Professor’s Team Wins Share of $20M in UC’s National Lab Funding – UC Davis

Chemistry professor Louise Berben is the lead principal investigator for one of five UC-wide research projects recently awarded nearly $19 million in grants by the UC National Laboratory Fees Research Program.

As announced Jan. 18 by the UC Office of the President, the research program distributed $20 million in all, including two-year in-residence fellowships to seven Ph.D. students, three of them from UC Davis, for research at the Livermore and Los Alamos national labs.

The program is funded by a portion of the fees that UC receives for managing the Livermore and Los Alamos labs on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy. Each systemwide project involves multiple campuses and at least one UC-affiliated national lab.

The Berben team received its grant for Direct Production of Renewable Fuels and Chemicals From Captured CO2, an effort to develop new ways to divert CO2 from waste streams and convert it into clean, renewable fuels and other useful products. Collaborating with UC Davis are the Berkeley, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside and Santa Barbara campuses, and the Lawrence Berkeley and Lawrence Livermore labs.

The project spans chemistry, chemical engineering and prototype-scale manufacturing with significant opportunities for interdisciplinary training of graduate and undergraduate students, Berben said.

With this allocation, the UC National Laboratory Fees Research Program has now distributed more than $190 million in competitive peer-reviewed grants since it began in 2008. The program fosters collaboration among the campuses and labs while addressing different strategic areas of research.

For the 2022 funding cycle, the program identified its strategic priorities as clean, renewable energy and decarbonization; frontiers of mesoscale materials and high energy density science; and pandemic preparedness and biosecurity. More than half the funds went to projects like Berbens that can help California meet its climate goals.

The UC National Laboratory Fees Research Program awarded fellowships to the following UC Davis Ph.D. students, each listed with their field of study, project title and the lab where they will be in residence:

The fellowships provide unique opportunities for UC students to work with leading scientists and gain exposure to facilities and equipment that are only available at the national labs, said Craig Leasure, UCs vice president for the national labs.

In fact, some of the top scientists at the national labs began their careers as students at UC and developed skills and expertise through research collaborations between the two institutions, he said.

The UC National Lab Fees Research Program does so much for both UC and the national labs, Leasure said. The fellowships are a great example of how UC is cultivating the next generation of scientists and national security experts.

Hunter Henry is excited about growing his chemistry with Mac Jones this offseason – Pats Pulpit

Their first year together was a productive one for Hunter Henry and Mac Jones. The New England Patriots high-priced free agency tight end and the rookie starting quarterback connected on 51 of 78 attempted passes for 633 yards and a team-high nine touchdowns.

Henry ended the season as Jones second most targeted teammates behind only wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, establishing a solid chemistry with the young QB. Heading into their first full offseason together, the goal is clear: keep working on that connection to make it an even more productive one in 2022.

Henry expressed his excitement about doing just that during his end-of-season media conference call,

This offseason will be huge, he said. That relationship and that chemistry goes a long way, and translates to the field. Just little things: growing our knowledge of the offense, the knowledge of the way we run routes, the way we see things, the way we see things against certain defenses. All that will continue to grow and only get better, so Im excited about it.

A former member of the Los Angeles Chargers, Henry arrived in New England via a three-year, $37.5 million free agency contract in mid-March. A few weeks later, Jones joined the team as the 15th overall selection in the draft.

The two did spend some time alongside each other over the course of training camp, but their connection did not take off until after incumbent starter Cam Newton was released. Henry acknowledged that it took some time for himself and the rest of the offense to develop a feel for playing alongside Jones, the Patriots QB2 throughout the summer.

There was a lot of growth. Early on we were still just trying to figure each other out, in a away. We didnt get many reps with Mac even in camp, he said.

It just took us time to build that chemistry, build in this system. And then we started clicking and then I felt like we picked it up mid-season, when we were really, really clicking.

Now, the two will have a full offseason alongside each other one that has both of them in clearly defined roles: Jones enters 2022 as the undisputed starting quarterback, while Henry is coming off a season in which he served as New Englands top receiving tight end.

Both will play a big part in helping the Patriots offense take the next step after what was a promising but ultimately inconsistent season for the unit. This process continues during the offseason.

Theres stuff to build upon, theres stuff to grow from, Henry said.

Anytime you have a season like we did we had a lot of success, we have a lot of stuff we need to learn from, we didnt start out how we wanted to, we didnt really end how we wanted to, we had a good middle part of the season with that big winning streak were going to sit back and reflect on the season. ... Look at the season as a whole, things that I can improve on, how I can help the team.

Actively continuing to build the relationship with his quarterback will be a good start.

Cleveland Cavaliers: The perfect blend of talent and chemistry — Chris Fedor – cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- David vs. Goliath. Big brother vs. little brother. Varsity vs. Junior Varsity. Rocky vs. Drago.

In each of the previous three seasons, thats what a matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks -- the NBAs winningest team since 2018 and a Central Division juggernaut -- wouldve felt like for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Not anymore.

This is not the Cleveland we knew in the past years, reigning Finals MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo said following the Cavaliers 115-99 statement win Wednesday night. Theyre a good team. They have a better record than us right now. Its a team that weve got to be careful, weve got to scout better and make sure we respect them even more now. Theyre a playoff team and theyre fighting for the title themselves.

Think about what Antetokounmpo said for a minute. It wouldve been unfathomable last season when the Cavaliers collapsed after a surprising start. It wouldve led to cackling months ago when they were once again predicted to finish near the bottom of the Eastern Conference.

Whos laughing now?

Certainly not the defending champion Bucks, who fell to fourth behind third-place Cleveland in the standings and, for the moment, lost grip of the season tiebreaker, something that could loom large as April draws near. Not the Brooklyn Nets, another team that Cleveland recently beat and leapfrogged in the standings. Not the New York Knicks or Atlanta Hawks, a pair of playoff teams a year ago that Cleveland has displaced.

The Cavs are legit. Everyone in the league knows it. Time to shift to a much more pertinent question: Whats their ceiling?

I dont think we know the answer to that, Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff told cleveland.com following the game. I know the future is bright but there are so many experiences we havent faced as a group that this years story cant be predicted. We have to keep passing tests and accepting challenges in order to see where we can ultimately go.

Wednesday was the latest. Its the biggest win of the post-LeBron James era.

The Cavs led mighty Milwaukee by as much as 21. Over the final 22-plus minutes, the Bucks never got within single digits. There was a 30-point discrepancy from 3-point range and almost a 40-point gap in bench scoring. The Bucks were held to 38% shooting over the final three quarters.

We feel that if we play hard and stay true to our system that we can beat anybody, Kevin Love said. We beat a very good team tonight. But now its getting guys in a mindset of, can we do it again? Can we do it night in and night out? To get to where we want to go, weve got to do it every single night. We want respect in this league. We want teams to understand that we want to bottle this up and make something special here.

This wasnt some serendipitous performance, catching Milwaukee at the right time -- like Decembers blowout win.

A dominant performance at both ends, the Cavs outplayed the fully-loaded, streaking champs who entered the night 45-6 against Central foes over the last four seasons and were 18-3 in games with Antetokounmpo, Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday all in the lineup. Antetokounmpo said he was surprised by Clevelands physicality and how tough it was going one-on-one against so many quality individual defenders. Middleton spoke about its unmatched size.

The swarming defense, third in rating this season, held Milwaukee, which averages 111.8 points, below the 100-point mark while forcing Antetokounmpo into seven turnovers -- matching his season-high.

We had a couple things when we came into the season about our identity: We wanted to be the hardest-working team out there and we wanted to always give 100 percent on the defensive end, Jarrett Allen said. I think tonight was a perfect example of that. Obviously, we have ups-and-downs but overall, we have stuck with our identity and its carrying us.

The Cavs, 30-19, have three wins in a row. They are 8-2 in their last 10. Already have double-digit victories this month. Boast the leagues fourth-best point differential -- even better than 31-win Miami. They are in the top 5 of net rating -- a ranking shared by each NBA champion over the last decade. Their net rating, No. 4 overall, is 6.3. It was minus-8.3 last season -- an unprecedented transformation.

Theyve won 15 games against teams above .500 and are 9-11 against the top 6 in each conference. Given the schedule gantlet already faced, the Cavs have the third-easiest remaining road, giving them a legitimate path to the Easts top spot.

They play hard and together, with a palpable bravado and irrational audacity required to reach the postseason without LeBron for the first time since 1998 -- and make noise when they get there.

They believe in each other, Bickerstaff said. They have no fear. No matter whats going on, good or bad, they always feel like somebodys got their back. We take challenges. We dont run from anybody. We dont back down. And we give everybody our best shot.

For three years, Clevelands best shot wasnt nearly good enough. It is now. The rebuild is over. This team is the perfect blend of talent and chemistry.

You can have all the talent in the world and have poor chemistry and youre going to underachieve every time. You can have less talent and more chemistry and youll achieve, Bickerstaff said. The beauty of it is, you cant put numbers to it, you have to put time and care into it. Thats the human aspect of what we do. The computers want to take all that away from us. Theres so much more to be said about -- especially in teams -- togetherness, a genuine trust and care for one another. That support gives you an opportunity every night to be more than what you are as an individual.

Earlier this week, Love referred to the Cavs as the ultimate share-the-wealth group. That was highlighted against the Bucks.

Darius Garland, Evan Mobley and Allen rightfully receive most of the attention.

Garland has made the third-year leap, morphing into the team leader, engine of the offense, a potential All-Star and one of the leagues best point guards. Allen, who drew the assignment against Antetokounmpo Wednesday, will also garner All-Star consideration. Mobley is transcendent -- the frontrunner for Rookie of the Year and a legitimate Defensive Player of the Year candidate who looks like a video game create-a-player. Hes already changed the trajectory of the franchise -- and is only scratching the surface.

Those three are the franchise cornerstones. They accelerated this process.

On Wednesday night, that trio, which Love referred to as a three-headed monster, combined for 45 points, 10 assists, 12 rebounds, two steals and two blocks. There was even a filthy, jaw-dropping connection between Garland and Mobley that ended with the rook putting Antetokounmpo on a poster -- a moment that sent shockwaves through Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

But the beauty of the Cavaliers is it can be anyones night. Lamar Stevens on the road in Oklahoma City. Dean Wade on Monday. Love and Cedi Osman Wednesday.

Love finished with a team-high 25 points -- another throwback to his younger days. Osman, who was a ghastly 1-of-20 from 3-point range in the previous five games, went 6-of-14 from deep and tallied 23 points. Those two helped blow the game open with their shot-making, especially against a Milwaukee defense that allows the most 3-pointers. Beating them requires drilling those looks.

Just continuing to tell him to be himself, Love said of Osman. I dont care if you shoot 0-for-12 or 12-for-12, we need you to be Cedi. When you get hot, you get hot. Just go out there, be yourself, play both sides of the ball. Hes one of those guys that hes really hard not to like. When hes hitting, we all get excited. Its not only the whole crowd, its the bench, the coaching staff, its everybody. I love Cedi. I mean, hes one of my favorite teammates, and one of my better friends in the league.

Then Love jokingly called Osman annoying while critiquing his jacket and saying Osman shadows him too much on the road. After Lo
ve sent a few barbs at Allen, it was the big mans turn to return the favor.

Its Grandpa Kev, not Uncle Kev, Allen said with a laugh.

Those playful exchanges dont even begin to encapsulate the camaraderie that pours onto the court.

Love chest-bumping teammates after big shots. Garland hopping back to the locker room with his arm around veteran Rajon Rondo following the win. Collin Sexton, who only recently began to walk following November meniscus surgery, stepping onto the court to direct his teammates or clap back at a shouting Bobby Portis after a technical foul. Ricky Rubio sending congratulatory postgame text messages despite recovering from a season-ending torn ACL. Isaac Okoro ripping on Bickerstaff for his old-school musical playlist. Teamwide barking.

The Cavs arent just one of the leagues best teams. Theyre one of the most connected. Fun is their secret ingredient.

Bickerstaff insisted before the game that the Cavs are still a work in progress. Love would prefer they continue behaving like underdogs while flying under the radar, not wanting to talk about ceilings.

I almost dont even want to acknowledge it because I just want to bottle what we have right now, Love said.

Thats getting much harder. The secrets out.

DESE votes to phase out chemistry and technology/engineering MCAS subject tests by 2024 – MassLive.com

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Board voted Tuesday to phase out two of the four MCAS high school science and technology/engineering subject tests. These exams are currently available for students to meet competency determination requirements for graduation.

Continued low and declining testing participation met by significant costs to develop the new tests contributed to the decision. The board said at Decembers meeting that most students take either the biology or introductory physics MCAS test, with only 3% of students taking the chemistry or technology/engineering exams.

Eliminating the tests will not eliminate courses in chemistry and technology/engineering. Data presented by the board suggests that in the 2020-2021 school year, 23,594 students took a course in technology/engineering and 67,814 students took chemistry.

Our high school MassCore requirements include three years of a laboratory science, so most students will have opportunities to take either or both of these subjects, the board said.

Before the vote, board member Paymon Rouhanifard of Brookline said he planned on voting to pass the proposal, but said he believes schools should measure what they value and that they are devaluing chemistry and technology/engineering learning. He added that he understands the rationale but wants schools to find another way to measure progress.

I think its a sad day that were taking this vote. Thats not to say that there arent great answers out there in the future and I hope this prompts some bigger dialogue, Rouhanifard said.

Secretary of Education James Peyser agreed with Rouhanifard, saying he recognizes the lack of interest in the subject tests but doesnt want to send a message that chemistry and technology/engineering dont matter. He added that DESE plans to support and strengthen high-quality coursework with science and technology, including testing.

The proposal to phase out the tests stated that schools would continue to offer them for two additional years in spring 2022 and spring 2023 to accommodate students and schools who still participate in the chemistry and technology/engineering tests regularly.

This deferred elimination allows students in the class of 2025 (who are in 9th grade this year) to take either of these two tests at the end of either 9th or 10th grade and gives high schools time to adjust their course sequences if needed, the board said.

Beginning in 2024, chemistry and technology/engineering tests would no longer be available, and only tests in biology and introductory physics would be offered to students in the class of 2026 and beyond.

Students in the class of 2025 will be allowed to submit performance appeals in chemistry and technology/engineering during the transition, however.

DESE plans to make the announcement this winter to provide fair notice to students and high schools so they can alter courses with the change.

If you know how to look, our world can be wildly colorful. Under an ultraviolet light, once-familiar objects can take on dreamlike brilliance: Think neon green scorpions, hot pink flying squirrels and electric blue diamond rings.

Known as fluorescence, this ability of certain molecules to absorb light in one colored wavelength and emit it in another is a phenomenon many scientists, including UCLA professor Ellen Sletten, are still exploring.

And a few years ago, Sletten devised a clever way to make her research into fluorescence more accessible to non-scientists: the Photonbooth. A clever twist on the traditional photo booth thats a staple of carnivals, arcades and parties, Photonbooth the pun in its name a reference to the fundamental particle of light has inspired hundreds of budding scientists to recognize that there is more to the world than what our eyes typically see, and that key scientific principles underpin everyones daily existence.

Its very clear right now, with the pandemic, that misinformation about science is dangerous for us all, says Sletten, a chemical biologist. Younger generations especially need us to focus on accurate, responsible scientific communication. Besides, everyone loves a photo booth, right?

The concept evolved out of an attraction from her 2015 wedding reception. To echo her engagement ring, which her fianc chose for its fluorescence (caused by a defect in the diamonds lattice structure), Sletten envisioned black lights installed in a standard photo booth with fluorescent props for guests to pose with. Her party-phobic father, an engineer, jumped at the chance to pay tribute to his daughters life work and to help turn her plans into a reality.

The Photonbooth was born.

It was such a huge hit, even with the nonscientists, Sletten says. I realized it was very synergistic with many of my labs research goals and could be a perfect avenue for science outreach.

When Sletten discussed the booth with members of her UCLA research team, her then-graduate student Rachael Day now a biochemistry professor at Drury University in Missouri was so inspired that she took it upon herself to build a version of the booth, and they immediately began using it at local parties and educational events, including Exploring Your Universe, UCLAs annual hands-on science fair.

A typical Photonbooth presentation begins with a quick science lesson demonstrating the fluorescent properties of common household items such as tonic water or detergent, followed by a discussion of the biomedical uses of fluorescence. Attendees next create their own glowsticks, enter the booth with whimsical props they choose and pose for photos, first under normal light and then, to best show off their fluorescent items, under a black light.

A lot of science especially chemistry, where everything is nanoscale or smaller can be difficult to comprehend, Sletten says. I really like using fluorescence because its so easy for kids to see. I also love how we can take something kids are familiar with, like a highlighter, and then help them realize there is this whole other side to it if they are curious enough to look and question.

Science education outreach is especially important to Sletten because it highlights the human connection that she says is so crucial to scientific progress. As she looks back on her labs first five years, she cites her relationship with her students and their growth among her most important accomplishments.

My students are amazing, and I try hard to be an effective mentor who gets to know each of them well, Sletten says. In many ways, starting a lab is like starting a small company. You go through all the challenges and problem-solving together, which makes for strong bonds. It has been incredibly rewarding to be a part of my students journeys to becoming excellent scientists and communicators.

At the same time, Sletten has attracted attention for the labs impressive progress toward developing diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. In 2020, she earned the Young Chemical Biologist Award from theInternational Chemical Biology Society, and in 2021, she received a grant from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiativefor her work on deep tissue imaging.

Sletten saysthe experience of children delighting in the Photonbooth experience mirrors the optimism she and her team share for the future of their own research.

When I think about the videos of molecules flowing within mice which our lab has been able to produce with previously unattainable speeds, colors and resolutions, I can relate to how those kids feel stepping in the Photonbooth, Sletten says. The opportunity to see something new, the feeling of discovery and fun I hope it inspires those kids to become science-savvy citizens or even future scientists.

Report: Cavs dont want to make a deal that might disrupt how special the teams … – Cavaliers Nation

The Cleveland Cavaliers continue to climb in the Eastern Conference standings, as the team is now third in the conference behind the Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls.

Chemistry has been a major part of the teams success. For that reason, the organization hasnt shown a desire to make any sort of move that could potentially disrupt the groups chemistry, according to The Athletics Jason Lloyd and Kelsey Russo.

Lloyd and Russo talked about what the Cavs might do at the deadline. Lloyd was quick to point out that any player the team trades for would need to fit in from a chemistry standpoint.

[Caris] LeVert makes a lot of sense, Lloyd wrote. Hes the right age, his contract is easy to absorb if the Cavs use [Ricky] Rubios contract as the vehicle to make the money work (theyd obviously have to include other assets) and LeVert likely wouldnt disrupt the chemistry the Cavs have right now. Thats a big deal in all of this. This team realizes how special this group is and they havent shown an inclination to do anything major that might disrupt it.

The Cavaliers have been led by Darius Garland, Jarrett Allen and rookie Evan Mobley in the 2021-22 campaign.

Trading for a player like LeVert would surely help the team overcome the loss of guard Collin Sexton, who was the teams leading scorer in the 2020-21 season.

However, the Cavs have already shown that they can win even with Sexton and Rubio done for the season, which may lead to the team standing pat at this years trade deadline.

LeVert has been solid for the Pacers this season. He is averaging 18.2 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game while shooting 44.4 percent from the field and 32.7 percent from beyond the arc.

It will be interesting to see how the Cavs proceed for the remainder of the season, as they clearly have confidence in their current group of players.

LSU chemists discover way to improve biofuel and biomaterial production – Greater Baton Rouge Business Report

Globally, sustainable energy is in demand, and plant biomass has been a front-runner as a renewable resource.

Until now, physical and chemical interactions in plant biomass had been a challenge in post-harvest processing, but LSU Department of Chemistry associate professor Tuo Wang and his research team of graduate students have discovered new information that can aid in the development of better technology to use biomass for energy and materials.

The team revealed how carbohydrates interact with lignin to form plant biomass, and the new information has revised the research of plant biomaterials, according to a report from LSU Chemistry.

Biofuels have made headlines elsewhere in Louisiana, with Gov. John Bel Edwards announcing last June that Delta Biofuel was evaluating Iberia Parish for a planned $70 million biomass fuel pellet plant.

The pellets, made from sugarcane fiber, would source fiber from mills in Iberia, St. Mary and St. Martin parishes, allowing alternative use of the mills unneeded waste.

The Los Angeles Lakers Big 3 has reunited for the first time in over a month, as Anthony Davis returned from his knee injury in Tuesdays win over the Brooklyn Nets.

Davis clocked in over 24 minutes at Barclays Center, scoring eight points, collecting two rebounds, and adding two assists, one steal, and four blocks. The 28-year-old All-Star moved well considering he had watched the previous 17 games from the sidelines.

LeBron James tried to get the forward involved from the very first second of the win against the Nets, sending a lob pass Davis finished with an alley-oop jam to get the Lakers on the scoreboard. After the game, James said L.A. benefits from the 28-year-old All-Stars mere presence on the court.

He just makes our team so much more complete, the four-time NBA champion said. Our length defensively, our ability to really get up in peoples faces because we know we got him at the rim, or our ability to switch a lot of things because he can literally guard one through five.

Offensively, it just attracts another set of eyes off of myself, off of Russ, off of Melo, off of Malik [Monk], off everybody because hes such a dynamic player.

The Tuesday win marked the 16th time the Lakers Big 3 played together in the same game due to James early-season injuries and Davis recent break. The 37-year-old superstar stressed the importance of the teams leading trio spending as much time on the court together as possible moving forward.

The more minutes that we log, we continue to see how dynamic we can be both offensively and defensively and it also puts everybody in their regular positions, James said. We just try to stay in rhythm as a team. We want to continue to work on habits, but along the way we want to win ball games as well.

We look forward to our next challenge playing against a great Philly team. Theyre playing exceptional basketball led by one of the hottest guys in the league in Joel [Embiid]. As we continue to get better, we continue to log these minutes and see what happens next.

Davis said his thoughts on the Lakers play he collected during knee rehab helped him prepare for the Tuesday comeback.

We struggled a little bit on defense, we wasnt talking. Guys werent in the right position so I tried to come in tonight and just quarterback the whole defense, Davis said.

And then also, the way we were playing offensively was really good. The things that we were doing, the adjustments that we made playing a five-out offense and guys running to set screens, Bron and Melo. It kind of confused people, so I tried to do the same thing in my first game back, wasnt trying to get into too many isos or force up shots, trying to screen, roll and get guys in positions where the entire team could be successful.

And I was able to do that tonight, we were able to do that tonight which led us to a win.

Snowdrop has shared new behind-the-scenes photos!

Directed and written by the SKY Castle team, Snowdrop is set in Seoul in 1987. It is about the love story between Su Ho (Jung Hae In), a student at a prestigious university who rushes into a womens university covered in blood one day, and Young Ro (BLACKPINKs Jisoo), a student at the womens university who hides and take care of him despite facing danger and close surveillance.

Ahead of the dramas finale, JTBC shared behind-the-scenes photos from set thatcapture the casts professionalism and dedication as well as their individual ways of preparing to film. The cast is shown reviewing the script together, double-checking their movements during rehearsals, and showing off their adorable chemistry.

The next episode of Snowdrop will show what happens when all the students in the dorm learn that Young Ro is the daughter of Eun Chang Soo (Heo Joon Ho), the ANSP director. On the other hand, Su Ho is given a command from North Korea to blow up the dorm and is told that his younger sister will die if he does not.Stay tuned to see how Su Ho and Young Ros relationship is affected by these tense circumstances.

Martin Shkreli fined and banned from pharma for life – Chemistry World

Martin Shkreli has been banned from working in the pharmaceutical industry for life. The former chief executive of Turing Pharmaceuticals (now known as Vyera Pharmaceuticals) has also been ordered to pay back almost $65 million (48 million) in profits, in a competition lawsuit brought by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and seven states.

In her ruling, US District Court Judge Denise Cote described his behaviour as egregious, deliberate, repetitive, long-running, and ultimately dangerous. She found he had violated both state and federal laws by engaging in anticompetitive conduct to protect monopoly profits on the drug Daraprim (pyrimethamine), which is used to treat toxoplasmosis. This disease is particularly dangerous for pregnant women and those with impaired immune systems, such as HIV patients.

Shkrelis trial took place in a federal court in Manhattan in December 2021. It described the restrictive distribution and supply agreements, along with data secrecy, that the company had instituted to make it difficult for lower cost competitors to enter the market. Shkreli was found liable on each claim, and banned for life from participating in the pharmaceutical industry in any capacity.

Judge Cotes decision to ban Shkreli for life is a significant victory for American consumers, said FTC chair Lina Khan. This precedent-setting relief should be a warning to corporate executives everywhere that they may be held individually responsible for the anticompetitive conduct they direct or control.

The ruling against Shkreli follows an agreement made in December with Vyera, and its former chief executive Kevin Mulleady. He was banned from the industry for seven years, and the company required to pay up to $40 million.

Vyera and Mulleady, along with Martin Shkreli, shamelessly engaged in illegal conduct that allowed them to maintain their exorbitant and monopolistic price of a life-saving drug letting pharma bros get rich, while others paid the price, said New York attorney general Letitia James, one of those leading the legal action. [We] will take every action possible to hold accountable companies and individuals for their illegal and anticompetitive behaviour.

Shkreli has a long history of questionable business activities in the pharmaceutical sector. He formed Turing in early 2015 with the acquisition of three generic products from another company, Retrophin: nasal formulations of ketamine and oxytocin, and the antihypertensive Vecamyl (mecylamine). Shkreli was also the founder of Retrophin, and its chief executive until 2014. Retrophin was renamed Travere Therapeutics in 2020.

Turing acquired Daraprim from Impax Pharmaceuticals shortly afterwards, in September 2015. Its price was jacked up massively overnight, from $13.50 a dose to an eyewatering $750. At the time, Turing was its only US-approved supplier, despite the fact that it had been on the market since the early 1950s, and had no patent protection. The company then proceeded to alter its distribution and supply process to prevent other companies from sourcing comparator product to run the registration studies required for the approval of rival versions. As a result, Daraprim remained unchallenged in the US market until March 2020.

Shkreli is currently in prison for crimes committed before his time with Turing. He was convicted of securities fraud in August 2017, with prosecutors claiming his activities resembled a Ponzi scheme. These crimes were committed while he was running hedge fund MSMB Capital Management and as chief executive of Retrophin. In that case, prosecutors said that between 2009 and 2014, he had lied to investors at MSMB about how well Retrophin was doing. He was also accused of using the company as his personal piggy bank to pay off investors at MSMB, as well as using its cash for his own personal benefit. He was initially released on bail after his conviction and before sentencing, but this was revoked a month later after he offered a $5000 bounty on social media to anyone who could obtain some of Hillary Clintons hair.

He was ultimately given a seven-year prison sentence, and ordered to forfeit $7.4m in assets. He is serving his sentence in a federal prison in Allenwood, Pennsylvania, having been transferred to there from a lower security prison in New Jersey after he was found using a contraband mobile phone to carry on running his business. He is currently set to be released in November 2022.

It remains unclear whether Shkreli actually has the money to pay the huge settlement in the most recent case. His assets before the securities fraud conviction and forfeiture included a Picasso painting, and the one-of-a-kind Wu-Tang Clan album Once upon a time in Shaolin that he bought in an online auction for a reported $2 million in 2015. This was among assets seized and sold in 2021 by the US Department of Justice.

Kevin Love’s Relationship With Darius Garland Defines the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Unrivaled Chemistry – Sportscasting

The Kevin Love renaissance is a welcome development for the Cleveland Cavaliers. But while Loves on-floor excellence contributes to winning, his relationships with the younger players, notably Cavs guard Darius Garland, underscores the incredible chemistry powering Clevelands success.

Love has handed the reins to Garland, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen. However, rather than being bitter about his new role, his willingness to take a back seat and empower the young guys has set the tone for one of the NBAs most surprising teams.

Kevin Love had only ever been a starter in his first seven seasons with the Cavaliers. But with Cleveland re-signing Allen and drafting Mobley No. 3 overall this past summer, the five-time All-Star saw a change on the horizon.

Love has not only embraced that change. Hes thrived.

The Cavs run high pick-and-roll with Garland and their two bigs. Theyll also set rubs for Garland to open up his playmaking abilities. Its a perfect system for a floor-spacing big like Love, who is making the most of his usage.

Love is shooting 40.2% from beyond the arc on 6.2 attempts per contest. He can spot up in the corners or slip-screen his way to open threes. That opens things up for Mobley, who can operate in the paint and flash to the middle for catches or make plays rolling to the bucket.

Simultaneously, when the defense offers help for either Garland or Mobley, Love usually gets open looks. He also creates offensive opportunities with dribble-handoff sets. Indeed, Love still looks to get teammates involved, averaging 3.6 assists per 36 minutes.

Still, while Loves import to the Cavs is evident on the floor, his connection with Garland most clearly defines the teams collective attitude.

Although Kevin Love has vented his frustrations and found his name thrown about in trade rumors in recent seasons, hes owned up to past mistakes and taken to a mentorship role, especially with Darius Garland.

Love considers Garland his little brother, per the Akron Beacon Journal. The two have cultivated something special, and Love appears to have instilled a sense of joy and work ethic in Garland, making Clevelands point guard a worthy candidate for the 2022 NBA All-Star game.

The liveliness and strong foundational bonds have rubbed off on Love. The 14th-year veteran also told JJ Redick on the Old Man and the Three podcast that he hasnt had this much fun playing basketball since the Cavaliers 2015-16 championship season.

We were a very, very close team in 15-16. Here you can just feel that we have a special group of high character individuals and really good communicators. You see that fromEvan,who just turned 20 years old, and all the way to[Rajon Rondo]. You dont get that often. Its really fun. Just want to bottle that up.

Nicknames like Old Man and Uncle Kevin dont seem to bother Love. Conversely, hes looked at them as terms of endearment. That energizes both Love as well as his teammates.

With the Cavs young core excelling and Love providing leadership off the bench, is Cleveland ready to contend?

Some fans might wonder whether the Love and the Cavaliers have enough on the current roster to remain squarely in the playoff picture. Theres actually an argument that Cleveland is one of the most dangerous teams in the NBA.

The Cavs rank third in the league in defensive rating and fourth in net rating. They have tremendous size with Mobley and Allen in the frontcourt, and that size becomes all the more consequential in the playoffs. The ability to bring Love off the bench is a true luxury given his rebounding, shooting, and exceptional outlet passes.

Is there room for another scorer and secondary playmaker? Garland spearheads an offense that moves the ball well. Cleveland ranks eighth in the NBA in assists. Still, the court tends to shrink in the playoffs, and the Cavaliers could probably use another bucket-getter to alleviate some of the responsibilities on Garland. Maybe a potential Collin Sexton return solves that issue.

Regardless, Love and the Cavs excel both on and off the floor. That locker-room chemistry might serve as a crucial intangible come playoff time.

In the behind-the-scenes clips, J.Lo and Maluma are seen meeting each other on the movie set dressed to the nines J.Lo in a form-fitting white dress with feathery sleeves, a silver snake armband, and a beaded headpiece, and Maluma in a stylish off-white tuxedo.

The two exchange pleasantries: You look beautiful, Maluma tells J.Lo. She responds with, You too. Youre pretty. Maluma puts his head on her shoulder and smiles.

There is an excitement to these relationships, J.Lo says during the clip. Theres something super exciting and feels new about it.

In Marry Me, J.Lo and Maluma play Kat Valdez and Bastian, a celebrity power couple in the music industry whose relationship ends when Kat finds out that he has cheated on her. Impulsively, she instead decides to marry a divorced high school math teacher (Owen Wilson) who is holding up a Marry Me sign at one of her concerts.

During the clips, audiences get a look at the couple laughing during production, looking into each others eyes, posing for photos, sharing hugs, dancing and, of course, singing a duet together on stage. After one scene on the red carpet, J.Lo refers to Maluma as a rock star and Maluma calls her a beautiful star.

Maluma ends the video by telling his fans besos, while J.Lo adds, Los quiero.

Marry Me debuts at theaters and on Peacock on February 11. The soundtrack for the film will be available on February 4.

And just like that. sparks start to fly between two of our favourite Sex and the City characters.

Sex and the City fans have been absolutely bereft to see the Miranda and Steves relationship fall apart in the new reboot series, And Just Like That. However, it would seem romance isnt off the cards for either of these characters.

As seen in the latest episode, Miranda has fallen head over heels for Carries non-binary podcast boss, Che Diaz, and has jetted off to Cleveland to surprise them with a grandgesture, leaving Steve in New York, alone.

One particular scene which got quite a few fans particularly excited, was a scene between newly widowed Carrie and newly single Steve. While we dont get to see any actual flirting just some hard-core bonding and emotional conversations some fans claim that the chemistry between these two is undoubtable.

One fan tweeted, Now why Carrie and Steve kinda looking cute together I wont be mad if they were paired.

While many devoted fans would love to see Steve and Carrie end up together, it seems a lot more likely that Carrie might end up with her former flame, Aidan, who show producers have already confirmed will be returning for the reboot.

Carrie and Aidan had a complicated on-again-off-again relationship throughout the Sex and the City series, with the pair even getting engaged at one point in season four. However, it seems the two werent mean to be, as Carrie couldnt get over her feelings for Mr. Big and Aidan couldnt get past his trust issues.

Now though, both characters have done a lot of growing up, and it would certainly be interesting to see if sparks can fly yet again! Who would you rather see Carrie end up with though? Are you Team Steve or Team Aidan?

from 1.1.2023 onwards or as agreed. The position may be filled as a tenure track assistant professor, tenure track associate professor or full professor depending on the candidates merits and career stage.

The field of the position is Food Chemistry. The research within this field is focusing in the chemical composition of foods and their raw materials as well as in reactions and interactions taking place between different compounds in foods. Experience regarding know-how of methods for chemical analysis is required. The chemical know-how on nutrients and other bioactive compounds in foods have a significant impact on human health and wellbeing. The relevance of food chemical expertise is further emphasized in aiming for sustainable food innovations contributed by new raw materials including agricultural side streams, and developments in processing methods as well as in food packaging materials. The appointee is well connected both nationally and internationally, and is expected to carry out high-level research including establishing a research group and securing of research funding. According to the Government Decree on Universities, professors and associate/assistant professors must be proficient in Finnish. They must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish or Swedish, she/he is required to acquire an adequate level of proficiency in Finnish within a reasonable period of time. WHAT WE OFFER

The professors gross annual salary varies between 70 000 and 96 000 euros and the assistant/associate professors between 55 000 and 62 000 euros, depending on the appointees qualifications and experience.

The Mets came back from an 0-2 hole to split this past weekend's four-game series with the Padres, capped by a 6-2 win Sunday at Petco Park in San Diego, and RHP Marcus Stroman sees a common theme as New York stays atop the NL East at 29-23 amid injury adversity.

"We just have a great vibe, honestly, in the clubhouse," said Stroman (5-4, 2.41 ERA), who pitched 6 2/3 innings and yielded San Diego (36-25) to one unearned run on four hits. "It's truly an internal clubhouse and we never get too consumed or care about anything that's happening outside on what's happening in the clubhouse. Everyone allows each other to be unique, to be the individual. Whatever anyone needs to do to put themselves at the highest level, we're very open to that. We don't try and say, 'You can't do this or can't do that.'

"Everyone's one. It's one big family. Everyone wants to see each other excel, each and every time, and that's all we're concerned with. Like I said, this is one of the best teams I've played, as far as camaraderie. It's a blessing to come to the clubhouse every day."

LF Dominic Smith, who gave the Mets a 2-0 lead with a solo home run in the fourth inning, echoed Stroman's sentiments when discussing an animated celebration players used from the dugout on big hits.

"I think all of us, we're trying to make a push," Smith said. "We're a brotherhood and we try to pick up everybody, we support everybody and I think at the end of the day we just try to just support each other and that's why we have so much fun out there."

Three and a half games ahead in the division, the Mets close out a nine-game road trip Tuesday and Wednesday, a two-game set against the Baltimore Orioles (21-38).

"For me, it just shows how brave these guys are," said manager Luis Rojas. "And we have a ton of adversity, right? And then this is our first trip to the West Coast, and all the difference. I mean, every team goes through this. But at the same time that we're going through injuries and all the uncertainties, the guys are able to stay consistent with the game that we've been playing, right, to win games.

"... Pitching and defense has been the formula. We stay in all games and we can have some big innings here and there, but scoring a lot of runs hasn't been our thing, right? So pitching and defense is a thing that I'm the most proud of. Guys are not shying away, regardless of what our lineup is. Pitchers are attacking. The guys are on their toes, making plays. And there are some guys that are coming with the bat. We saw (James) McCann hit another homer today.

"So that's the one thing that I'm proud of, just how brave these guys are and how consistent they stay with the formula that's worked for us to win games. And they trust it. We're just going to keep moving forward with our head up. We have a day off. It's always good to win before a day off. It's a great feeling. I know, for the team, it is. So we have our day off, we'll rest and then we'll see Tuesday. We're hoping that (Jonathan) Villar might be in our starting lineup. That'll be a win, too."

Hannah-Jones tenure case costs UNC Chapel Hill a noted chemistry faculty candidate – Inside Higher Ed

Whether or not Nikole Hannah-Jones joins the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill may soon be answered: today is the deadline she set for the universitys Board of Trustees to grant her the tenure she was initially offered or face legal action.

Either way, the university may have already lost out on another coveted recruit: Lisa Jones, an associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences whom Chapel Hills chemistry department has long sought to woo away from her current job at the University of Maryland at Baltimore, says shes not interested in working somewhere that spurned Hannah-Jones.

According to Chapel Hills chemistry department, Jones wrote to withdraw her faculty candidacy, calling the recent news that the board had deferred Hannah-Joness tenure, despite faculty and administrative backing, disheartening.

It does not seem in line with a school that says it is interested in diversity, Jones wrote of the boards action. Although I know this decision may not reflect the view of the schools faculty, I will say that I cannot see myself accepting a position at a university where this decision stands. I appreciate all of the effort you have put into trying to recruit me but for me this is hard to overlook.

Chapel Hills chemistry department wrote to the universitys chancellor, Kevin Guskiewicz, about Joness withdrawal in a letter that has since been circulated online, saying the dire repercussions of the Hannah-Jones case are impacting our ability to recruit and attract a diverse and talented faculty person. The department said it workedhard for two years to recruit Jones, a Black chemist who is renowned for her work in structural proteomics by leveraging tools in biochemistry, analytical chemistry and biophysics.

Joness letter of withdrawal is a reflection of what our nations minority scholars will be saying about the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill as they search for job opportunities or consider if this university is still the right fit.

Hannah-Jones retweeted a copy of the departments letter to Guskiewicz, writing, Ive never met this sister, Dr. Lisa Jones, but the solidarity shown me by Black women in particular during this crucible is something I will never forget.

Jones declined an interview request but shared a statement saying that shed come to wonder if UNC Chapel Hill would be "conducive to the achievement of my academic aspirations, which include promoting diversity, equity and inclusion. While I have never met Ms. Hannah-Jones, as a faculty member of color, I stand in solidarity with her and could not in good conscience accept a position at UNC. This situation is indicative of a broader issue within academia where faculty of color face several obstacles and are less likely to gain tenure."

In closing its letter, the chemistry department urged the board to hold a vote on Hannah-Joness tenure case immediately, or further compromise everything we value and represent.

Chapel Hills Faculty Executive Committee sent a similar request to the board last week, but Mimi Chapman, committee chair and Frank A. Daniels Distinguished Professor for Human Service Policy Information, said Thursday that she hasnt heard anything from the trustees. Meanwhile, Chapman said shes heard from many faculty members united in their outrage about the Hannah-Jones tenure deferral and in concern about their own programs ability to recruit and even retain talented faculty members going forward.

All you can do is infer from their actions, and they do not seem to have the faintest idea about the impact of their actions on a public research university, Chapman said of trustees. We are one of the top five research and public institutions in the country. Just think about the pandemic -- we had people here working on the vaccine, people working on therapeutics before other people were in other places. So for them to imagine that you attract that kind of talent in the midst of this kind of scandal -- what do they think? Do they think people in medicine dont care about what happens in journalism? Thats not how we are as a community.

Chapman continued, You cant have the things that they champion about our university without accepting all of it. It all works together, were part of a whole. Thats what a university means.

Thus far, Chapman said, she wasnt aware of another specific withdrawn faculty candidacy, beyond Joness. But given the long faculty hiring cycle, she said it was possible the Hannah-Jones case could affect recruitment and retention next year, or even longer term. Chapel Hill, where faculty salaries are relatively low compared to private peer institutions, is always at risk of poaching, she added.

The university said it had no updates Thursday evening about the boards intentions for Hannah-Joness tenure dossier. That dossier, which the board declined to vote on earlier this year, reportedly for political reasons, is now back with the board.

Hannah-Jones, a Pulitzer Prize winner and MacArthur Foundation genius grantee, co-led The New York Times Magazines 1619 Project re-examining the role of race and racism in the nations history. It was widely praised among readers, journalists and academics but became a lightning rod among many political conservatives who continue to allege that it promotes false, unpatriotic narratives about what the U.S. is as a nation.

The Assembly reported that the board experienced some high-placed lobbying against Hannah-Joness appointment, in the form of the Hussman School of Journalism and Medias biggest donor, school namesake and Arkansas media mogul Walter Hussman Jr.

I worry about the controversy of tying the UNC journalism school to the 1619 project, Hussman reportedly wrote in a now-ironic December message to Guskiewicz and at least one board member. I find myself more in agreement with Pulitzer prize winning historians like James McPherson and Gordon Wood than I do Nikole Hannah-Jones.

Hussman reportedly wrote in another email to administrators that he didnt like Hannah-Joness contention that Black Americans fought the civil rights battle largely alone, as long before Hannah-Jones won her Pulitzer, courageous white southerners risking their lives standing up for the rights of blacks were winning Pulitzer prizes, too.

Hussman has since said that he did not think he was pressuring Chapel Hill to act a certain way regarding Hannah-Jones, who was ultimately offered a five-year contract without tenure as the Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism.

But thats apparently how it felt, at least to Susan King, dean of the journalism school. She told The Assembly that I felt worried enough about Walters repeated questions challenging our hiring of Nikole Hannah-Jones as Knight Chair and his subsequent call to at least one other donor that I asked for help from others in the administration.

Last week, Hannah-Jones and her legal team gave the trustees until today to vote on her case or face litigation. I am obligated to fight back against a wave of anti-democratic suppression that seeks to prohibit the free exchange of ideas, silence Black voices and chill free speech, she said at the time.

If Hannah-Jones does get tenured and join Chapel Hill, shed be just one of 32 tenured Black women professors out of 1,384 tenured professors total, according to federal data from 2019, the most recent year for which these figures are available.

Julian Vasquez Heilig, dean of the University of Kentuckys College of Education, whose ongoing research shows there was little to no change in faculty diversity from 2013 to 2017, especially at large research institutions and despite many initiatives to this end, said he wasnt surprised Jones had cold feet about Chapel Hill now.

Theres a real chilling effect because this community of scholars is small, especially within disciplines, he said. Even when questionable treatment of a scholar of color doesnt make national headlines, he said, news still travels through the graduate and fellowship cohorts
and various affinity groups that function as what Heilig called formal and informal information networks.

At Chapel Hill, he said, they were will willing to give [Hannah-Jones] a five-year contract but they werent willing to let her do that work in a secure, independent way, with the academic freedom that tenure ensures. This is a long-standing problem that higher education has for faculty of color and women, and we struggle with racial, ethnic and gender diversity. Just look at the numbers.

Nick Saban could not hide his excitement when it came to discussing certain players during spring practice.

After securing his second undefeated national title at Alabama, he graduated marquee playmakers to the National Football League.

Some are concerned about how the Crimson Tide will look offensively; however, others are prepared to see a fearsome defense take the field in the fall. When he was not talking about COVID-19 vaccinations, name-image-and-likeness, or the explosion of graduate transfers, Saban spoke on the potential chemistry of this years Alabama team. He had a first-year starting quarterback in Mac Jones win a national championship, but now the mantle falls on sophomore Bryce Young for a repeat.

Well, its always a working progress but I do think the summer program is where the leadership on the team has the best chance to flourish, Saban said at the Old Overton Golf course. The coaches are not always around, so the players have more input. Weve had our annual leadership on the lake, and I think the players are excited about the opportunities and challenges this season will bring.

Offensively, names such as Brian Robinson, Evan Neal, Chris Owens, John Metchie, Slade Bolden, and Jahleel Billingsley have to dictate the temperature in the room. Alabama carried a young offense in 2011 and 2015; nevertheless, both groups won a national championship.

It will be intriguing to see how this team stacks up, but it knows the mentality it must have to win consistently.

The Tide is going after its second repeat since the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
