CBD: Safe and effective? – Mayo Clinic

A prescription cannabidiol (CBD) oil is considered an effective anti-seizure medication. However, further research is needed to determine CBD's other benefits and safety.

CBD is a chemical found in marijuana. CBD doesn't contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive ingredient found in marijuana that produces a high. The usual CBD formulation is oil, but CBD is also sold as an extract, a vaporized liquid and an oil-based capsule. Food, drinks and beauty products are among the many CBD-infused products available online.

Currently, the only CBD product approved by the Food and Drug Administration is a prescription oil called Epidiolex. It's approved to treat two types of epilepsy. Aside from Epidiolex, state laws on the use of CBD vary. While CBD is being studied as a treatment for a wide range of conditions, including Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, diabetes, multiple sclerosis and anxiety, research supporting the drug's benefits is still limited.

CBD use also carries some risks. Though it's often well-tolerated, CBD can cause side effects, such as dry mouth, diarrhea, reduced appetite, drowsiness and fatigue. CBD can also interact with other medications you're taking, such as blood thinners.

Another cause for concern is the unreliability of the purity and dosage of CBD in products. A recent study of 84 CBD products bought online showed that more than a quarter of the products contained less CBD than labeled. In addition, THC was found in 18 products.

If you plan to use products containing CBD, talk to your doctor.

CBD Oil for Cats: What You Need to Know | PetMD

By Kate Hughes

As cat owners look for ways to keep their kitties happy and healthy, theyre starting to explore alternative treatments not previously considered by Western medicine. Among these alternative treatments is cannabis oil.

This isnt much of a surprise, considering that more people are turning to cannabis as a natural treatment for their health issuesand research studies have consistently shown the plants positive impact on inflammation and other ailments. However, as studied as cannabiss effect on humans may be, there have been no official major scientific studies into its impact on pets.

So, is cannabis safe for cats? And what sorts of ailments might it treat?

Cannabis plants contain more than 100 active compounds, but the one most often used for medicinal purposes is cannabidiol, or CBD. CBD differs from cannabiss major active compound, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), in that it does not have a psychoactive affect, meaning it will not get users high. CBD oils contain a high concentration of CBD and can be used for therapeutic purposes.

There are not many classical medical studies that explore the effects of CBD oil in cats, says Dr. Daniel Inman, a veterinarian at Burlington Emergency Veterinary Specialists in Williston, Vermont. While we dont recommend CBD oil for our patients, holistic veterinarians are using it to treat a variety of ailments, including inflammation, anxiety and pain.

Inman is careful to specify that CBD oil is often used to subjectively increase comfort and improve quality of life in pets, not necessarily cure ailments. This type of treatment should be advised by your veterinarian and not initiated without their consent.

Although there have been no scientific studies that specifically investigate the impact of cannabis on pets, Dr. Gary Richter, a holistic veterinarian and owner and medical director of Montclair Veterinary Hospital and Holistic Veterinary Care in Oakland, California, says that CBD oil is generally safe for cats. However, there can be some adverse effects to giving your cat CBD oil, including gastrointestinal upset and some sedation, both of which can be relieved by discontinuing the use of the oil.

I think the bigger issue, from a medical perspective, is making sure that animals are dosed appropriately. This means that the CBD oil is having the affect you want it to have, and that youre not accidentally overdosing, he says.

Dr. Liza Guess, a clinical assistant professor at the Ohio State University Department of Veterinary Medicine in Columbus, Ohio, says that the lack of official, documented research into the affects of cannabis products for cats would make her hesitant to recommend them.

I have heard that, in humans, marijuana products can be used for neuropathic pain, intractable seizures, anxiety, and appetite stimulation. I have plenty of medications in each of those categories [that are not cannabis] that have been safely used in cats for years that I am very comfortable using and understand well, she says. These medications have gone through rigorous studies and are approved by the FDA. Why would I want to use a poorly understood treatment that I cant guarantee is safe or even effective?

She adds that the FDA does not regulate the CBD products that are available on the market, so consumers cant be sure that theyre giving their pets the dosage that they think they are.

Pet owners looking to give their animals CBD oil should do their due diligence before purchasing anything online, Richter says. The marketplace is very much a buyer beware environment, and people should be sure that the product theyre buying has been laboratory tested for both content, as well as contaminants like bacteria, fungus, and heavy metals.

Also, its worth nothing that while CBD oil is typically quite safe for cats and dogs, cannabis plants are not. There is plenty of documentation of marijuana toxicity in cats, for those that nibble on the plants, Guess says.

Inman adds that as an ER veterinarian, he often sees marijuana toxicity in the animals that come into his practice. You can usually tell if a pet has gotten into someones marijuana. And, in more severe instances, I have had to hospitalize animals until the affects have worn off.

Regardless of how well CBD products work for cats, there is also the issue of legality. If a cannabis product contains less than 0.3 percent THC, its classified as hemp, which is not a restricted substance. Most, if not all, CBD oil fits this description. The bigger issue is discussing this course of treatment with your veterinarian.

In a perfect world, your veterinarian would be able to discuss this treatment as an option for your pet, but depending on where you live, your veterinarian may or may not be legally at liberty to have this conversation with you, Richter says. Even if you live in a state where cannabis is legal, it can be illegal for a veterinarian to tell a pet owner how to appropriately use these products.

There are activists looking to change these laws, Richter among them.

For example, theres a bill being brought to the California State Legislature to debate the use of medical cannabis for animals and veterinarian involvement, he says. Theres a very robust conversation going on right now about it whether or not veterinarians should be able to discuss and recommend cannabis for their patients, and, if so, exactly what that looks like.

Being able to discuss all types of treatments with your veterinarian is key, and Richter advises checking in with your vet before giving your pet any sort of cannabis. Theres no reason to ever start giving any kind of medication or supplement without having a conversation with your veterinarian first, he says.

What is the difference between hemp seed oil and CBD oil?

Since the approval of the first cannabidiol (CBD)-based drug by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), consumers have become increasingly interested in the benefits of hemp seed and CBD oils.

First, it is important to note that there is a lot of confusion around the names of these products. Hemp oil is another way that people can refer to CBD oil. However, some people may also refer to hemp seed oil as hemp oil.

Hemp seed oil and CBD oil are very different products.

CBD oil uses the stalks, leaves, and flowers of the hemp plant in its production. These contain a higher concentration of CBD, which is a compound with numerous potential health benefits.

Meanwhile, hemp seed oil comes from the seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant. The seeds do not contain CBD, but they still have a rich profile of nutrients, fatty acids, and useful bioactive compounds that can also have health benefits.

Having a better understanding of hemp seed oil and CBD oil may allow both clinicians and consumers to choose the safest and most appropriate product.

Keep reading to learn more about the differences between hemp seed oil and CBD oil.

Hemp seed oil derives from the seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant. It contains omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, gamma-linolenic acid, and other nutritional antioxidants. It is also high in B vitamins and vitamin D.

People will not get high when using hemp seed oil, as it contains no tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and little to no CBD.

People do not use hemp seed oil for recreational purposes. This is because the levels of THC and CBD, which cause the psychoactive effects, are either limited or absent.

Some nutritional supplements contain hemp seed oil because of its high omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid, gamma-linolenic acid, and nutritious antioxidant content.

Other uses of hemp seed oil include manufacturing clothing and fibers.

Some people suggest that hemp seed oils can help people maintain good cardiovascular health by improving:

However, the evidence for its efficacy for these purposes is not clear.

When manufacturers add hemp seed oil to nutritional products such as snack bars, breads, cookies, and yogurt it provides an excellent source of nutrients. It is rich in unsaturated fatty acids and essential amino acids.

Hemp seed oil also has several possible benefits, including:

Some other possible benefits of hemp seed oil include:

Hemp seed oil also contains other components that may provide benefits to consumers.

Manufacturers extract hemp seed oil from the seeds of the hemp plant.

Since the oil comes from the seeds and not the leaves, flowers, or stem of the cannabis plant, hemp seed oil does not contain THC.

Consuming hemp seed oil is safe.

However, it may not provide any benefit for cardiovascular health, as some people believe. Some consumers also report digestive issues, but these effects may not occur in everyone.

Less than 0.3% of the dry weight of hemp seed oil contains THC, so people are unlikely to experience a high when consuming it.

Learn more about the potential benefits of hemp seeds here.

People can generally find three different types of CBD oil on the market:

It is important to note that because these terms are not regulated, some manufacturers may use them interchangeably.

People should always check the Certificate of Analysis (COA) of CBD products. Usually, a third party will conduct this testing. Checking the COA is the only way to fully understand what exactly a CBD oil product contains.

Some people use CBD oils for their alleged medicinal benefits.

For example, people may use CBD-derived products for:

Aside from the antiepileptic effects of CBD, researchers still need to confirm the other potential therapeutic benefits of CBD.

Since full-spectrum CBD oil contains THC, some people may use it for recreational purposes because it has psychoactive effects. Other effects of THC may include preventing nausea and vomiting.

These oils may also contain smaller amounts of other phytocannabinoids and terpenoids, which may have other effects that require further investigation.

Learn more about the potential health benefits of CBD oil here.

Researchers are still attempting to determine how CBD affects the body, but they suggest that it works in several ways, including by:

The THC in full-spectrum CBD oil binds to the CB1 receptor in the endocannabinoid system, and this is responsible for its psychoactive effects.

Full- and broad-spectrum CBD oils may also contain beta-caryophyllene, which can bind to the CB2 receptors. Researchers are still investigating the function of the CB2 receptors.

Several components of the different CBD oils have specific effects.

The following table summarizes some of the components in CBD oils and their potential effects:

Researchers are still studying the effects of the components in CBD-derived products.

CBD oil comes from the flowers and leaves of the plant. With specialized extraction processes such as carbon dioxide extraction, manufacturers can draw out an extract rich in CBD and other components.

Although manufacturers need to keep all components intact for full-spectrum CBD oil products, they only need to extract CBD for CBD isolate.

Research suggests that CBD-derived products are safe and have limited side effects. Although information about the safety of different CBD oils is lacking, researchers have studied the side effects of individual ingredients in CBD-derived products.

For example, there were no reported side effects when participants took 300 milligrams (mg) of CBD per day for up to 6 months. A study also demonstrated no side effects when people took up to 1,500 mg per day for a month.

Larger studies into the effects of Epidiolex, a CBD drug for people with epilepsy, reported some side effects. These included:

Experts advise people who want to use CBD-derived products to ensure that they can trust their source. Improper labeling and faulty manufacturing processes can expose people to contaminants or THC in CBD isolate or broad-spectrum CBD oil.

Today, regulations on product labeling in the United States are unclear. To select an appropriate and safe product, experts suggest ensuring that:

People who want to use CBD oils or other CBD-derived products should speak with a doctor or qualified cannabis clinician first, as CBD can interfere with certain other medications.

Learn more about some of the top CBD oils available here.

Hemp seed oil and CBD oil both derive from the cannabis plant. CBD oil comes from the flowers, leaves, and stems, while hemp seed oil uses extract from the seeds of the cannabis plant.

Products containing hemp seed and CBD oils do not typically cause a high, since the levels of THC, if any, tend to be very low.

Both CBD oil and hemp seed oil have numerous potential health benefits, but because research is limited, scientists must continue to study them.

CBD has been studied alongside other cannabis constituents for a lot longer than most people know. Some of the first formal studies were conducted and documented about cannabinoids, including CBD, in the 1940s. The use of cannabis as a medicinal plant dates back to ancient times, but the illegalization of the plant in the 20th century brought a lot of potential studies to a halt because the government no longer funded a lot of research for what was marked as a scheduled narcotic.

As more and more people start to become educated on Cannabidiol, new developments in scientific research have shown CBD as a potentially beneficial component of the cannabis plant. Over the last several years, there have been numerous studies carried out by esteemed educational research institutions and professional medical organizations, and there are many more in the works.

TheUS National Library of MedicineNational Institutes of Health has published numerous studies, including areportthat showed CBD may be beneficial in reducing irritation. Animal studies have shown that CBD helps with anxiety, and there have been a fewstudieson humans to show similar responses with a CBD routine.

Clinicians’ Guide to Cannabidiol and Hemp Oils – PubMed

Cannabidiol (CBD) oils are low tetrahydrocannabinol products derived from Cannabis sativa that have become very popular over the past few years. Patients report relief for a variety of conditions, particularly pain, without the intoxicating adverse effects of medical marijuana. In June 2018, the first CBD-based drug, Epidiolex, was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of rare, severe epilepsy, further putting the spotlight on CBD and hemp oils. There is a growing body of preclinical and clinical evidence to support use of CBD oils for many conditions, suggesting its potential role as another option for treating challenging chronic pain or opioid addiction. Care must be taken when directing patients toward CBD products because there is little regulation, and studies have found inaccurate labeling of CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol quantities. This article provides an overview of the scientific work on cannabinoids, CBD, and hemp oil and the distinction between marijuana, hemp, and the different components of CBD and hemp oil products. We summarize the current legal status of CBD and hemp oils in the United States and provide a guide to identifying higher-quality products so that clinicians can advise their patients on the safest and most evidence-based formulations. This review is based on a PubMed search using the terms CBD, cannabidiol, hemp oil, and medical marijuana. Articles were screened for relevance, and those with the most up-to-date information were selected for inclusion.

Does CBD Kill Bacteria? What to Know – Healthline

When it comes to cannabis, most attention centers around two parts of the plant: tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the component that produces the high sensation, and cannabidiol (CBD), the part typically used for medicinal purposes.

As you might already know, CBD enjoys a lot of popularity in the wellness field. Its widely used as an alternative remedy for conditions ranging from nausea to chronic pain. Some people even find it helpful for easing mental health symptoms like anxiety.

Until 2018, it was difficult to get government approval to study CBD, so most of the research exploring its uses is quite new. One emerging area of study thats gathered a lot of excitement? CBDs antimicrobial traits.

As it turns out, CBD actually does a pretty good job killing bacteria even some strains that are resistant to traditional antibiotics. Having a potential weapon against these supergerms could save a lot of lives.

Read on to learn what experts know about CBDs ability to kill bacteria and what this means for you.

CBD can kill both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Both types of bacteria can develop resistance to antibiotics. However, Gram-positive bacteria usually prove much harder to kill because they have thicker protective membranes.

According to a 2021 study, it takes very little CBD to kill most Gram-positive bacteria. CBD can even destroy species that have developed resistance to multiple drugs, such as:

Among the Gram-negative bacteria also studied, 20 species survived CBD exposure. This wasnt too surprising, since scientists havent come up with any new classes of antibiotics to treat Gram-negative bacteria since 1962.

What the researchers did find surprising? CBD could kill four kinds of Gram-negative bacteria, all of which have a history of drug resistance and can be life-threatening:

Overall, CBD seems to show promise as a versatile antimicrobial agent.

That said, the researchers did reported numerous conflicts of interest, the main one being that the pharmaceutical company Botanix funded much of the study. Botanix makes a topical CBD formula thats currently undergoing clinical trials.

However, other studies without conflicts of interest have reported similar findings. For example, a 2022 study found CBD can fight Salmonella typhimurium, a Gram-negative bacteria that attacks your stomach and intestines. Around 59 percent of salmonella infections resistant to ampicillin (a specialized antibiotic used to treat salmonella) involve the typhimurium strain.

CBDs ability to fight bacteria is potentially a huge deal. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimate 2.8 million people develop an antibiotic-resistant infection each year, and around 35,000 people die from these infections.

Cannabidiol appears to kill many of the more harmful bacteria species, including:

These numbers come from the 2019 CDC report Antibiotic Resistance Threats in the United States.

MRSA, in particular, appears to have a much harder time mustering resistance against CBD than against antibiotics. The 2021 study measured drug resistance by growing MRSA in petri dishes and measuring the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), or amount of substance needed to kill all the bacteria in the dish.

The antibiotic daptomycins MIC increased 26-fold over 20 days of exposure. In other words, the MRSA bacteria developed so much drug resistance after 20 days that it took 26 times the original amount of daptomycin to kill it.

Meanwhile, cannabidiols MIC only increased by a factor of 1.5. Relatively speaking, MRSA barely developed any resistance against CBD.

CBD isnt avoiding resistance just because its new to the bacteria battlefield. Theres something special about how CBD functions that makes it harder for bacteria to adapt.

Many drug-resistant bacteria defend themselves by preventing antibiotics from entering their cells. Common antibiotic-fighting tactics include:

Yet CBD doesnt need to enter the bacteria to kill it. Instead, it attacks bacteria membranes, popping cells like microscopic water balloons. Bacteria cells dont have defined organelles the way animal and plant cells do. Their innards are more like a soup that just spills out into the void, once something destroys the membrane keeping everything together.

But some traditional antibiotics, like penicillin, also kill bacteria by destroying their membranes. Further research may help experts determine which specific molecules CBD targets and why CBD appears more effective than antibiotics at breaking down certain kinds of bacterial membranes.

Despite this encouraging lab performance, CBD is far from ready to be used as antimicrobial treatment in the real world. This substance has a major weakness that keeps it from becoming a miracle drug: It binds to protein very easily.

When CBD enters your bloodstream, most of it will latch on to proteins in your plasma. CBD doesnt kill human proteins like it does germs, but it does become glued to those cells. Only 10 to 14 percent of CBD will remain floating free and available to attack bacteria. Even if the CBD does reach the site of the infection, other tempting proteins might lure it away.

In a nutshell, taking cannabis or CBD oil most likely wont help you fight off an infection. CBD spreads too much through the body to launch a targeted attack against bacteria. And you cant exactly flood your system with CBD without risking an overdose.

Scientists continue to study ways to take advantage of CBDs bacteria-fighting potential. Possibilities include formulas to transport CBD directly to the bacteria in an infection, or synthetic CBD that ignores human proteins and focuses only on attacking bacteria.

Animal and human studies to date have found the most success with oral formulas. Rather than an injection, future CBD treatments may take the form of a nasal spray or pill.

In short, while CBD gummies cant currently treat infection, its possible you could take an antimicrobial CBD gummy in the future.

You may not be able to harness CBDs antimicrobial potential just yet. Still, you might notice some benefits when using CBD for pain or anxiety.

A few helpful reminders before you try CBD:

CBD has the ability to kill certain species of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Even so, it likely wont replace antibiotics anytime soon.

Experts need to conduct more research to determine exactly how CBD functions in the human body before they can put it to use as a treatment for infections.

Must Employers Ignore Positive Drug Tests Caused By CBD Use? – JD Supra

In recent years, we have advised employers whose employees tested positive for marijuana, but the employee claimed that the positive test resulted from their use of legal CBD oil or related products. Some employers have explicitly warned employees about the risk of using CBD products that contain detectible amounts of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. What happens, however, when an employee claims that excusing the positive result is a required accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act?

In a recent federal district court decision in Louisiana, the judge denied the employers motion for summary judgment in a case in which an employee alleged that she was using CBD oil under a doctors prescription to treat chronic migraines. The employer terminated her employment after testing positive for THC, citing a government contract that mandated such testing. The employee claimed that excusing the positive test was a form of required accommodation under the ADA.

In her decision, the district court judge concluded that a jury should determine whether the employer should have accommodated this request. She rejected the employers argument that the federal governments listing of marijuana as a Schedule I controlled substance automatically removes persons who test positive from the ADAs protections. The court also appeared to draw a distinction between CBD and THC, even if the former substance can contain trace amounts of THC.

This decision was made by a district court and does not have a binding effect on other courts or employers. If the matter goes to trial, the jury may conclude that the request to ignore the drug test result was an undue hardship on the employer under the ADA. Regardless, this decision calls into question employers assumption that employees who test positive for marijuana cannot claim CBD use as a legal excuse. As more cases on this issue arise, employers should modify their drug testing policies to follow the guidance provided by federal courts.

While frying cannabisleaves wont get you high, theyre a super tasty snack that will leave you wanting more.

Though they sound like a novelty in the U.S., fried cannabis leaves are a relatively popular delicacy in Thailand.

Cannabis was only just recently decriminalized in the country, but many Thai restaurants have been incorporating fried cannabis leaves in multiple delicious menu offerings for many years. Restaurant-goers can slurp soup garnished with dried marijuana leaves or crunch deep-fried bread topped with pork and deep-fried marijuana leaves.

MaeKhrua Hua Pa is considered thefirst Thai cookbook to contain a recipe for tender ganja leaves, and it was published in 1908.

Its pretty simple. Just follow these six easy steps.

Fried cannabis leaves are delicious to eat by themselves, but if youre craving something more filling, here are some equally scrumptious and slightly more savory options:

Whats better than soft, pillowy potato pieces with fried sage and cannabis leaves? Cannabis leaf frying just went to a whole other carb-filled level.

The recipe is super easy; just be sure that your cannabis and sage leaves are very dry for optimum crispiness.

The Crazy Happy Pizza is a popular menu offering in Thailand, and you can make it at home, too!

To amp up the cannabis flavor, infuse cannabis oil into the dough of your pizza and top it with your favorite toppings. While your pizza is in the oven, fry up an entire cannabis leaf and place it on top once fully cooked.

A Thai-style omelet is as easy to make as it sounds.

Whisk eggs with fish sauce, soy sauce, and pepper. Pour the mixture into a frying pan and place a whole cannabis leaf on top. Fry in a pan until the edges crisp up.

You can also fry upyour cannabis leaves separately and sprinkle them on top, along with fried shallots or chives.

License to grow: THC cannabis buds in the Ithaca area – The Ithaca Voice

TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. With the spring arriving, a new industry is being planted in New York. On April 14, the state released the first set of licenses allowing farmers to grow cannabis fit for adult-use recreation.

Of the initial 52 licenses, two of them have gone to farms in the Ithaca-area: Enfield Glen Hopyard, in Tompkins County; and Main Street Farms, which is located in Cortland and has had a long established presence at the Ithaca Farmers Market. New York State is expected to announce another 50 licenses in the coming weeks.

The licenses were given to farms in New York that had already built a business around growing hemp for cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD, which became legal to farm on a federal level in 2018. CBD has been advertised and widely adopted as an over-the-counter remedy for relieving anxiety, depression, and soothing aching muscles in forms ranging from salves, tinctures, oils and even infused bed pillows. CBD does not come with the high associated with cannabis, which is caused by another compound, tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC.

New York farmers will be limited to selling their new crops to state-licensed dispensaries, which are also limited to buying THC cannabis from state farmers. Cannabis with a THC content is still federally illegal and considered a Schedule 1 drug by the DEA.

Farmers that have received the state license will also be required to fulfill a social equity mentorship with people who have received cannabis-related convictions, which are now eligible for expungement in New York State. Details of the program are yet to be seen but, essentially, it will give people who suffered as a result of now moot cannabis offenses an opportunity to shadow and train with cannabis farmers in order to start their own operations.

Allan Gandelman is a co-owner of Main Street Farms with Bob Bonagura, which began as an organic vegetable farm but diversified into growing CBD hemp in 2018. The farm is now the base block for a vertically-integrated cannabis company, New York Hemp Oil, which Gandelman co-owns with Karli Miller-Hornick.

These initial licenses limit farmers to growing just an acre of THC cannabis, which Gandelman thinks is the right move.

As a farmer and president of the New Yorks largest cannabis association, I think, I generally agree that the start out this way is good, because we can always increase, but you can never go back, said Gandelman.

Few have had a better perch for understanding the growth of New York States cannabis industries than Gandelman, who is also the President of the New York State Cannabis Growers & Processors Association. But Gandelman characterizes his farms as a small one only growing between 30 to 40 acres and believes that as the cannabis industry grows in New York, that state government should protect this budding sector from the pressures of overregulation and competition from Walmart and Amazon style big weed businesses, which undercut smaller competitors on price to squash competition.

The initial acreage limit, Gandelman says, should keep New York State from facing the issue of oversupply, which has caused THC cannabis farms in states like California to face dangerously low prices a trajectory that farmers across the U.S. all-too-often end up struggling against.

The national market for CBD cannabis followed that path, perpetuating a harsh streak in business for Enfield Glen Hopyard owner, Jason, who said he would prefer to not have his last name publicized.

Jason began farming hops in 2016, when the crop was the talk of the town and a hopeful emerging market in New York [] Unfortunately, hops never shaped up in New York. Its really difficult to compete with the Pacific Northwest.

In 2018 Enfield Glen Hopyard split from its name and dove headfirst into growing CBD hemp, but an oversaturated national market created financial troubles for the farm. Then came the pandemic; the general economic upheaval and supply chain imbalance of the COVID-19 pandemic just added salt to the wound.

Jason said, Most [hemp] farms I know, in 2020 and 2021 had to compost, burn, or till in their crops because there was just no market for it.

With a cannabis license in hand, Jason is feeling optimistic, and thinks the state has chosen some smart policies to shepard farmers into a level playing field.

[CBD] was a complete bloodbath. A lot of a lot of farms really suffered through hemp, and any farms that have now received this [THC] license coming from hemp, you know, its really absolutely a much needed life saver, said Jason.

One missing piece of the puzzle for New Yorks new hemp farms are the dispensaries they will be selling to. While grower licenses have been doled out, licenses for the only potential buyers have yet emerged.

We have a chicken and egg situation, said Gandelman.

Permitting the farmers earlier than the dispensaries will enable those storefronts to be stocked when they open their doors, but it runs the risk of leaving growers high and dry if the legislation hits a snag in Albany.

That potentiality is on Gandelman and Jasons mind, but so is the day when recreational THC cannabis might become federally legal, and in effect remove the insulation that will allow a steady growth of New Yorks agricultural business.

Jason said that he hopes that if and when that day comes, the state would take some regulatory precaution to protect businesses like his which would end up being squeezed by the likes of farms in Californias Emerald Triangle, where the drier climate is more favorable to cultivating cannabis as opposed to New Yorks remarkably wet one.

But with the growing season beginning, Main Street Farms and Enfield Glen Hopyard are going to be applying the experience and practices they dialed-in on CBD Cannabis, and getting a new batch of crops in that ground that will, perhaps, help alleviate any short-term stress.

With the right varieties and the right methods in place, we can grow the best cannabis in the country, maybe, said Jason.

How does CBD oil work on the body? – nativenewsonline.net

Details

As mentioned in many articles over the past few years, cannabidiol is a substance extracted from the Cannabis sativa plant grown under organic farming, selecting the species with a low THC content instead to enhance the excellent extract of the plant: CBD.

The CBD oil is obtained by treating the inflorescences from which it is possible to get a natural product, part of the CB1 type, which positively stimulates the human body.

Besides, thanks to the new European and British laws, you can now legally buy and use CBD products and order your product legally online at the best CBD flower shop: JustBob.

Several times, it has been shown that cannabidiol has no psychoactive effects or does not act on the mind, causing psychotropic reactions. Therefore, this substance does not give any addiction, but rather instils tranquility by giving well-being and becoming a good ally for treating various diseases and disorders.

The Cannabis plant already contains a very low percentage of CBD and THC in nature. It was possible to have plants with a higher concentration of cannabinoids thanks to the hybridization between selected species. Therefore, the new hemp contains a high percentage of CBD and a concentration of THC very close to zero. This is the only species that can be grown and sold legally.

THC causes an amplified alteration of the state of anxiety. On the contrary, CBD manages to interact with the serotonin reactor, the happiness hormone. As a result, it gives serenity and well-being to anyone who uses it, reducing anxiety and panic attacks. The simplest method to take CBD is to buy it in the form of oil: only a few drops of this product are enough to regain the lost serenity.

Cannabidiol oil can regulate heartbeat by calming agitation and allowing greater control over negative thinking. In addition, CBD interacts with dopamine neurotransmitters that create well-being and vitality by counteracting depressive symptoms.

Therefore, it can be identified as a natural antidepressant and an excellent aid for the treatment of various addictions, such as, for example, smoking, as it manages to stabilize the mood by counteracting the negative effect given by abstinence.

A migraine attack lasts between 4 and 72 hours. It is much more intense than a regular headache due to, for example, stress or allergy. During a migraine attack, you often have no choice but to go to bed, take pain relievers, and hope it will pass soon.

Pain relievers, however, have the disadvantage of having side effects and often offer only mild relief. In a study of 48 people, 40% of the participants had fewer migraines while taking CBD oil.

Another study of 26 participants found that people who used CBD oil have a better quality of life than those who used pain relievers.

These are just a few small studies; however, it seems helpful to try CBD oil if you suffer from migraines often.

If an acute migraine attack, you can also inhale CBD oil using a vaporizer. Therefore, the active ingredients will almost immediately pass into the blood.

Fibromyalgia is a condition that causes severe chronic pain in the muscles and connective tissue, and stiffness throughout the body.

Since CBD oil has an analgesic effect, it is not surprising that its consumption is beneficial for some people with fibromyalgia. However, there is still a lack of convincing scientific evidence in this regard.

Many people suffer from sleep disorders. About 10% of the population suffers from chronic insomnia, and 30% will experience it at some point in their life.

Marijuana is well known for helping with sleep disorders. For example, the use of marijuana with high THC values reduces the duration of REM sleep. This is useful in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) because one dreams less and has fewer nightmares.

CBD is better suited than THC for insomnia instead.

With CBD, you can enjoy a deeper sleep. Deep sleep is the most crucial phase of sleep: it is the most restorative and calm phase.

User reviews reveal that CBD improves sleep for many people, while others benefit more from THC. Again, it's a matter of proving what's suitable for yourself. However, although THC can solve short-term sleep disturbances, THC has affected long term sleep quality.

CBD oil has virtually no side effects. It does not carry a risk of addiction and has no psychoactive effects.

Based on clinical studies conducted in 2010, researchers concluded that CBD can be used safely and is well tolerated. However, consuming CBD oil does cause side effects in some people. Here are these side effects:

- nausea- sleep disorders- irritability- oral dryness- hypotension- slowing of digestion- dizziness- hallucinations- drowsiness- mood swings

Too high a dose of CBD oil increases the risk of side effects. In addition, if CBD oil is not pure (and contains THC), there is a risk of experiencing side effects, including hallucinations. Changing CBD oil can be a solution.

Some CBD oils have relatively high concentrations of THC.

However, in the UK, CBD products are prohibited if they contain higher levels of THC and if they are not obtained from authorized plants.

So, make sure only to buy the best CBD oil at JustBob.shop, and you will have the best CBD products online at the best price!

WATCH: Cannabis Expo 2021 CBD infused burgers and more – Citizen

Billed as their big return, Cannabis Expo 2021 was a four-day event that took place in the Sandton Convention Centre from 18 to 21 November.

The expo hall featured plenty of exhibitors representing the full spectrum of the cannabis industry.

The Cannabis Expo is the biggest cannabis event in Africa, a market that has interested large investors across the world.

Silas Howarth, the director of the Cannabis Expo, said this was the first big public exhibition as things continue to open up under Covid-19 lockdowns.

The expo is an opportunity for businesses to work together and for urban farmers to grow their market. The medicinal benefits have been widely commercialised and cannabidiol (CBD) is just part of the over 100 components in cannabis, says Silas.

He said their partnership with JuicyFields helped in creating a private smoking area where people could consume and smoke cannabis legally.

The Citizen visited the expos food market and we tried cannabis-infused food, drinks and learned more about CBD oils.

Tristan Dias is the owner of Billys Booze and Biltong and he started his CBD business in 2019 with a craft store in Modderfontein, Johannesburg.

Having extensive experience in the alcohol industry, he opened the business with the help of his brother, a food specialist who developed recipes for the biltong.

We marinate the biltong in alcohol. Marinating process is about two to three days. We have [collaborated] with local, smaller distilleries.

One of these distilleries belongs to Afrikaans rappers Jack Parow. They use his brandy for the biltong.

Another brand they use isVok Off Lager, for their slice biltong, and tequila in their chilli bites. Once cured, there isnt a lot of the alcohol flavour left but what you do get is moist biltong, says Dias.

The dry wors, known as theirhigh wors, has CBD and Tristan says the process of making his products is expensive because CBD oil is pricey.

There is a slight undertone of CBD flavour in the dry wors but there is enough CBD.

CBD-infused gins are also hot property and Billys offers Norweed Gin, which is a naturally-infused cannabis spirit.

On the hunt to find the best CBD bites, what grabbed the attention was cannabis-infused burgers, wraps, coffees, slushies and vegan meals.

HuntaHerb is a plant-based restaurant in Johannesburg and the meals are infused with different CBD oils.

The Rosti-farian burger is a bean and beetroot patty served on a light ciabatta-charcoal bread, with wild rocket, pickled red onion, grilled pineapple, avo and sweet pineapple mayo.

When we ordered, Elixir Africas CBD oil range was the option. Elixir ranges from repair to relax, which assists with anxiety, focus and energy. A few drops of the oil are topped onto the burger.

We chose the repair oil. It is difficult to tell if there were any effects on ones mood or body. The burger was juicy and quite satisfying.

Elixir representative Bala says their products also include cannabis edibles such as gummies and chocolate spreads, which have 20mg of CBD per jar. The products only have CBD and other traces of cannabinol oils.

THC was a hot topic in the expo, as it has higher traces of cannabis and is much stronger in creating a high sensation.

A very limited number of products had this option in the expo and THC is still considered illegal to consume in public.

It is recommended when trying these products to be in the comfort of your home.

Claudia Winkleman health: Strictly host confesses ‘I’m doing the wrong job’ due to health – Daily Express

The bubbly and sarcastic presenter joined the BBC One dancing show back in 2004 but, even after 17 years, the star says that nerves get the better of her.is not helped by the fact that the star can barely read an autocue. In a past interview, Claudia revealed that it was thanks to daily use of CBD oil that she is able to conquer her nerves and sleep easy.

Addressing her sleep issues to The Sun, Claudia said: If you ever see Tess doing the show wearing something with a big sleeve, it is because I have hurt her arm where I have squeezed it because I am so nervous.

I cant do that right now, but I do get really scared.

Not because I think I am doing anything important I am not in scrubs holding a scalpel it is just because I dont want to let this magical team, which is what they are, down.

In live TV, we are tiny cogs and if you go off-piste and talk too long then you mess it up for everybody.

In addition to her nerves, Claudia has to battle with her deteriorating eyesight, something which she has said is utterly embarrassing.

Addressing her poor eyesight she said: I can't even begin to tell you how blind I am. It's embarrassing. I can't read the autocue.

My eyes have deteriorated so badly, I'm not meant to drive. I am doing the wrong job.

In order to salvage what was left of her sight, Claudia booked an appointment at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, which turned out to be one of the best decisions she could have possibly made, as she quickly got laser eye surgery.

Sticking to form, Claudia became extremely nervous about the surgery, quizzing doctors about all the possible side effects.

Claudia said: I booked into the doctor and he explained how they are going to do it. I had to ask him a few questions like, 'Am I going to die?' - to which he laughed at me - and, 'Could my eye pop out and roll?' He replied, 'You're quite highly strung yet hilarious.'

I handed over my credit card. He gave me an enormous thing and said you have to read that. I said I can't.

It was a frightening time but the operation was life-changing.

I am so grateful to the fantastic staff at Moorfields [Hospital], she added.

With her eyesight sorted, Claudia then set about tackling her sleep deprivation. Talking to The Mirror, Claudia explained that it was the coronavirus lockdown that didnt help her sleep schedule.

In lockdown, suddenly everyone was home. I wasnt napping, I was jangly and not my usual self, she explains.

After months of suffering, Claudia suddenly found solace in a shocking product - cannabis.

In fact, the star loved the products so much that she became an ambassador. It is important to note that the star takes a non-intoxicating compound of cannabis in capsule form, known as CBD.

Until lockdown, I hadnt even really heard of CBD, she says. Dont ask me anything sciencey [sic] because I have no idea, but it works for me.

My clever, brilliant cousin Sara sent me these Cannaray CBD capsules to try. I would take two every night and within a week I felt much more on an even keel. Ive never slept like it. Its not just a nap in the day now, its a super-nap. CBD has become part of my regime in the same way I brush my teeth.

According to Healthline, CBD has multiple health benefits including relieving pain and reducing anxiety and depression.

Studies have shown that CBD reduces chronic pain by impacting what is known as endocannabinoid receptors. As well as this, it is reported that CBD reduces inflammation and interacts with neurotransmitters to ease conditions such as multiple sclerosis and arthritis.

Five CBD Products that Could Help Manage Chronic Pain – Eye On Annapolis – Eye On Annapolis

CBD has performed incredibly well in controlled studies using animal models to reduce swelling and increase mobility. Researching pain relief is difficult because pain is subjective. It is hard to prove that a substance can reduce pain because everyones tolerance is different. However, we have countless anecdotal accounts from people who have experienced CBD pain relief firsthand.

The best CBD product for pain is one that fits your lifestyle and allows you to use it every day. Consistent use is the most critical aspect of CBD. When looking at CBD oil for pain reviews, you will notice that the users who experience successful results took a dose at least once per day.

Experts agree that using CBD daily is the best way to get results. We highly recommend using multiple administration methods. For instance, you can take CBD oil sublingually each morning to boost endocannabinoid production for long-term effects and use CBD topically when you experience pain.

Below are our picks for the best types of products to use when you experience pain. Again, we recommend using multiple and choosing the ones that best fit your lifestyle.

Using CBD sublingually with oil and tinctures is the most effective way to administer CBD without serious side effects. Allowing CBD oil to dissolve under your tongue allows for maximum absorption. The mucosal glands under your tongue serve as a direct path to the bloodstream.

CBD capsules are another great way to administer CBD for pain. Taking a capsule is beneficial because it is so easy. We are all accustomed to taking pills, tablets, or capsules each day.

Gummies are one of the most popular forms of CBD because they are delicious. Who doesnt like a gummy packed with cannabinoids that ease the pain? Taking gummies also offers high absorption rates because they are broken down in your mouth and easily by your stomach. Other edibles like cookies and chocolates have relatively low bioavailability rates because the CBD has to be processed by the liver.

Smoking CBD with a vape is by far the most efficient way to send CBD to your bloodstream. The lungs are filled with blood; every hit goes directly into your bloodstream and is distributed throughout the body.

The downside of using a CBD vape is the long-term consequences. We are not sure about the side effects of using vapes long-term because they are so new. Make sure you buy a product with all-natural ingredients containing no synthetic fillers if you want to relieve pain with CBD vape.

Topicals are among the most popular delivery methods for pain because you can apply a concentrated dose directly to the sore muscle or joint. We recommend finding a high potency product because the skin is less permeable than our mucosal glands or lungs.

Using CBD for pain is among the most popular reasons why people use CBD. To experience the best results, make sure you are using CBD daily, have a reliable retailer, and find the optimal dosage for your body. We highly recommend supplementing a topical with another method to experience the best results possible.

Five CBD Products that Could Help Manage Chronic Pain - Eye On Annapolis - Eye On Annapolis

Its mind-boggling: the complex, and growing, use of medicinal cannabis in Australia – The Guardian Australia

When Helen was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in her early 40s, her doctor prescribed her a range of opioids. She tried morphine, meperidine and a few others, but none helped ease the constant pain her chronic condition caused.

Long before medicinal cannabis was legal in Australia, while Helen was travelling across North America, a doctor at a dispensary suggested she try cannabidiol oil. He gave me this bottle of tincture and taught me to use one or two drops under my tongue, Helen says. My pain decreased dramatically. I was stunned.

But once she returned from her trip, her only option was the black market.

Helen is one of hundreds of thousands of Australians who have turned to medicinal cannabis to treat numerous conditions, which they feel have not been helped by traditional therapies. But as the industry grows after its legalisation in 2017, the evidence remains inconclusive and the costs, for many, prohibitive.

Today in Australia, medicinal cannabis products are only available on prescription. Data from the Therapeutic Goods Administration reveals that more than 172,000 people have been approved access to medicinal cannabis through its special access scheme.

Only two products have received approval from the TGA and are registered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. One is Epidyolex, prescribed for rare but severe, drug-resistant forms of epilepsy in children. The other one is Sativex, approved in 2012 to treat muscle spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis.

Doctors can request access to 224 different unregistered medical cannabis products through the TGA scheme or as an authorised prescriber. These products can be capsules, oils, nasal and oral sprays containing either THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) or CBD (cannabidiol) or a combination of the two. Some of these are plant-derived. Others are synthetically produced.

Alongside skyrocketing demand for medicinal cannabis, there has been growing research interest around its use, with many clinical trials trying to demonstrate its efficacy for a number of medical conditions.

Yet, strong evidence is often lacking and many products remain unregistered, making prescribing with confidence difficult for many GPs.

Assoc Prof Vicki Kotsirilos, a GP and Australias first authorised medicinal cannabis prescriber, says the process for prescribing medicinal cannabis is much easier than it was four years ago.

The major challenge GPs face is to pick the right product among more than 200 unregistered ones, for which clinical evidence is unavailable. Choosing the right product is a real challenge, Kotsirilos says.

Prof Iain McGregor heads the Lambert Initiative for Cannabinoid Therapeutics, a Sydney University research centre founded by a donation from the former finance high-flyer and medicinal cannabis entrepreneur Barry Lambert.

Its quite mind-boggling to try and match a patients condition to the right product and dosage because often that clinical trial evidence isnt there, McGregor says.

Yet the number of medicinal cannabis users has escalated over the past five years. This year alone more than 86,000 applications have been lodged, with the number forecast to surpass 100,000 next year.

Like Helen, the vast majority of patients resort to prescription medicinal cannabis to manage chronic pain. Yet last March the faculty of pain medicine at the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists released a statement recommending health practitioners not to prescribe the available medicinal cannabis products to treat chronic non-cancer pain unless they are part of a registered clinical trial.

There is not one clinical trial yet that shows that CBD does anything useful for chronic pain, McGregor says. The prescribing continues nonetheless, and thats not evidence-based prescribing.

Common uses for medicinal cannabis include treating cancer pain, and sleep and mood disorders. Anxiety is now the second most common condition for which patients request medicinal cannabis.

Larry, a 43-year-old carpenter living on the Gold Coast, has been using it to cope with anxiety and depression for the past 18 months.

A surf lover, an artist and father of five, Larry has struggled with his mental health since he lost his father at a young age. I used to use cannabis a lot in my late teens and 20s, he says. It just took that edge off of the anxiety and depression.

Back then, Larry bought on the black market. Now he attends a specialised clinic and uses low-dose CBD with 2% THC. The best thing about [medicinal cannabis being] regulated is that it is grown in controlled environments its not just somebody growing it in their backyard or you growing it. You know exactly what you are getting.

Larry says medicinal cannabis is one tool he uses to manage his anxiety, together with keeping active, eating well and having a healthy lifestyle. [Medicinal cannabis] is not a silver bullet but it just gives you a bit of reprieve, he says.

Like THC, CBD binds to cannabinoid receptors in the brain, controlling the release of chemicals that regulate functions and processes including mood, emotions, sleep, appetite and pain. Low levels of serotonin in the brain can cause anxiety, depression and other mood disorders. Researchers hypothesis that high doses of CBD could help regulate serotonin levels in the brains in some people.

There is a whole host of receptors that we know CBD interacts with, McGregor says. But the whole picture is very complicated, and we still dont have the full jigsaw puzzle assembled.

CBDs ability to act on many different receptors does not translate to significant therapeutic benefits. Because it opens so many doors, you would think it would have profound effects, but its quite the opposite, McGregor says.

While some people continue to report experiencing tremendous benefits from CBD oil, he says, clinical studies have found that low doses of CBD dont show any difference compared with placebo.

Paradoxically, the vast majority of patients use CBD oil at doses we dont have any evidence for yet, he says.

At the end of last year, the TGA approved CBD products with a maximum dose of 150 milligrams a day to be sold over the counter as schedule three medicines. But unlike prescription-only cannabis medicines that can be prescribed even though unregistered, over-the-counter CBD products must be listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods.

To register their products, companies must prove they have clinical benefitsand, so far, no low-dose CBD product is on the register.

There are lots of companies claiming that they are pursuing over the counter registration, ays Rhys Cohen, the editor at large for Cannabiz and a non-executive advisory member at the Lambert Initiative for Cannabinoid Therapeutics.

There are a smaller number of companies that are actually attempting that work. Whether they will be successful or not is uncertain because no one has demonstrated before that CBD at those low doses is effective for treating a medical condition.

While clinical trials have proven the effectiveness of some high-dose cannabis-derived drugs such as Sativex and Epidyolex, the evidence remains anecdotal for low-dose CBD products.

CBD has very complex pharmacological action we still dont fully understand, McGregor says.

Kotsirilos says that in her experience, not every patient experience the same benefits: Everybodys response is different. Some individuals are more sensitive than others.

Starting with low-dose CBD oil only is her preferred strategy for most patients, increasing slowly to higher doses if required and finally considering introducing THC. But in patients with severe pain or chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting, such as those in palliative care, she says, there is no point in giving CBD alone.

Unfortunately, not all GPs are familiar with CBD products and feel confident enough to prescribe them to patients, she says. This is a gap that we need to address through balanced education in Australia.

But while the evidence of its effectiveness remains inconclusive, for the many Australians who are looking to the drug for hope in relieving their pain and other conditions, the costs can be formidable.

The access system disadvantages less wealthy Australians who are more likely to suffer from those conditions for which medicinal cannabis is most requested. More than half a million people still turn to the black market to self-medicate, and that comes with great risks.

Generally, unregulated products sold on the black market are not pure compounds but contain an undefined amount of CBD and THC and a mix of other substances, with unknown effects on the body. And home growers often use a range of pesticides that might cause severe adverse effects.

When Helen failed to find a GP willing to give her a prescription, she looked for a medical clinic specialising in medicinal cannabis.

While these clinics allow patients access to CBD oil products, they are not affordable for most. These clinics charge outrageous prices, says Helen, who has paid up to $350 for a 15-minute telehealth consultation.

That is on top of the cost of the products, which are on average $0.14 a milligram, with prescribed doses ranging from 50 to 200mg a day. The government does not subsidise medicinal cannabis products under the pharmaceutical benefits scheme.

For many patients like Helen, that equals spending hundreds of dollars every month.

Im in my 70s now, and I still work to pay for my medicines, she says. In the future, I would like to see better education for people and doctors; I would like to see costs go down; I would like to see a fairer accessing process for all.

Harvest 2021 is an indication industrial hemp is off to a strong start in South Dakota – SDPB Radio

Because it is a new crop and there is a learning curve, Dohmann encourages South Dakota farmers interested in planting industrial hemp in 2022 to start out with just a few acres.

Harvest is nothing new for fourth-generation farmer Joshua Klumb. But this year the Mitchell farmer said he was a bit nervous.

The thing I was most anxious about was getting it properly harvested in a condition where it could be stored, Klumb says.

The crop he is referring to is industrial hemp. 2021 was the first growing season it was legal to grow in South Dakota. And as the District 20 Senator, Klumb says he felt it was his duty to be among the first producers to try it out. This year, about 12 farmers statewide grew industrial hemp for grain, fiber and CBD oil.

After we got it to pass, I thought, you know, I put a lot of talk out there, I should probably put some actual work behind it and make sure it works the way it's supposed to work. And make sure what we were trying to sell to people is real, Klumb says.

Klumb says although there are numerous regulations and paperwork associated with growing industrial hemp, once he got approval from the state, and planted the seed, industrial hemp was an easy crop to grow.

We got our seed. We planted it on May 19th and we didnt go back in that field until the second week in September, Klumb says.

He did not need any inputs - like fertilizer - because the 7-acre plot of land he selected to grow the industrial hemp on had been a cattle yard. And no herbicides were needed because the crop canopies quickly, keeping the field free of weeds. Klumb harvested the grain with a combine used to harvest corn.

We yielded 1,000 pounds per acre and we sold it for 55 cents a poundIt came out at about 29 to 30 percent moisture. We didnt have a lot of hassle, but you have to have it on air within like three hours because it is so wet. We managed to get it into the wagon and haul it right away to the bin which was a couple hundred yards away and dump it in. So, because its wet it doesnt flow. It had a hard time coming out of the wagon. Then in the bin, it wasnt heavy enough to spin the gravity spreader, so we had to level it out by hand in the bin. Just things that we found out, and good to find out before we would expand acres, Klumb says.

Klumb says the profits-per-acre made it worth the extra effort. The family plans to plant an additional 40 acres in 2022.

Klumbs future plans mirror those of the other South Dakota industrial hemp growers. Katie Sieverding is the Executive Director of the South Dakota Industrial Hemp Association.

The vast majority of acres were planted for grain and fiber and we have some great success stories. I think the best news that I have been hearing from everyone who has planted, is they are looking to plant more next year. Not just five to 10 acres. Were looking at people saying, I planted seven acres this year, I want to plant somewhere between 40 and 80 next year, Sieverding says.

Sieverding expects the number of acres planted to industrial hemp to more than double in 2022.

The increase boils down to success. I think the farmers saw success this year and theyre going to increase in the future and hopefully bring some of their neighbors along, Sieverding says.

In 2021 Sieverding says more than 1,600 acres of industrial hemp were planted in South Dakota.

The industrial hemp harvested off those acres could be marketed in many different ways. For example, the grain from Josh Klumbs acres was sold back on contract to Willow Lake-based Horizon Hemp Seeds. The seed company will sell it to other farmers eager to plant industrial hemp in 2022 explains Derrick Dohmann, the companys sales and marketing manager.

Im already getting calls from folks wanting to procure seed for the next planting season, Dohmann says.

In addition to seed, pounds of industrial hemp grain may be sold to food processors, hemp fiber may be converted into building materials, while hemp grown for CBD oil may go into beauty products.

Its truly the skies the limit for this product. Take a look around your house and basically point to something and theres people out there trying to make itWe truly think that this crop could be like corn or soybeans after a time, Dohmann says.
