Open Journal System Website for Gravitational and Space Biology Is Now Active

Dear Colleagues:

The Open Journal System web site for Gravitational and Space Biology is active, and we continue to encourage manuscript submissions of all kinds - from members and non-members alike. The instructions to authors can be found on the website, and in the front-matter of any issue.

Manuscripts can be submitted any time through the website, http://GravitationalAndSpaceBiology.org, and will be published in the order of their completion through the peer review and author revision process. We continue to make special encouragement to people interested in contributing short communications developed from abstracts presented at the annual meeting, as well as longer symposia papers from the annual meeting. Manuscripts submitted before March 1st will be targeted to the Spring 2013 issue, and those submitted between then and August 1st will be targeted to the Fall 2013 issue. But again, manuscripts of all kinds may be submitted at any time, and will be published in their order of completion.

As you know, we are transitioning to a broader scope, and although we are currently still listed under the title "Gravitational and Space Biology" we are targeting the Fall 2013 issue to be the first issue under the title "Gravitational and Space Research". We are in the process of expanding our editorial board to support this change. Submission is open to all, and we are actively encouraging papers in all fields. Examples form the biological side of the house include (but limited to): gravitational and space biology, astrobiology, analog environment research, advanced life support (ALS), biophysics, radiation biology, engineering, and hardware development. Examples of physical sciences relevant to the ASGSR community include (but again, not limited to) fluid physics, combustion, materials, and acceleration in altered gravity environments. The categories of papers in the journal are Short Communication, Methods, Research, Review and Hypothesis. Guidelines for each category can be found in the Instructions to Authors, and you may feel free to contact any of the members of the Editorial team for guidance at any time.

The value of the journal to ASGSR, and to the scientific community, depends heavily on the quality and number of articles submitted. We look forward to receiving many high-quality papers that strongly reflect the exciting research of our members. We are the face of ASGSR.

CLU professor working to change college biology instruction

Scientists and educators think they know how to keep students studying biology in college rather than giving up in frustration after an especially difficult course or two. They know, for example, that students must explore scientific concepts rather than just memorizethem.

The problem is the recommendations a national group has made remain just recommendations. Now another group is working to take those ideas from theory to practice in universitiesnationwide.

That group includes David Marcey, a professor at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. Marcey is one of 40 fellows selected for the Partnership for Undergraduate Life Science Education, which is trying to improve how colleges teach lifesciences.

The work is important because so many students give up on biology or other life sciences after sometimes challenging, but essential, courses such as freshman biology, Marceysaid.

"We have a very leaky ... pipeline," Marcey said. "Many students are interested in science entering college, and the attrition rate is phenomenal, especially among underrepresented groups" low-income students and those who are the first in their families to go tocollege.

Marcey's group has a year to take recommendations from the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Science Foundation and start making them reality. The group met for the first time in October and will meet again in June. Meanwhile, it has broken into four groups that talk monthly byphone.

"We're trying to build a framework that will spark the adoption of (those) recommendations at the department level nationally," Marceysaid.

Some universities already have adopted the group's overall approach, including the University of San Diego, where Rick Gonzalez, a member of the group, teachesbiology.

When Gonzalez teaches freshmen, he sends them out to do their own investigations, like having them find 30 plants of the same species, measure the plants' leaves and collect thedata.

"They're actually asking questions, then making measurements to answer those questions," Gonzalezsaid.

Dont worry, its just biology. The Australian Retailers Association predicts $14.8 billion will be spent in the coming weeks, helped along by human nature and the fear that if youre not in the shops, youre missing out.

As human beings, you assume that if lots of people want something, then we need to be part of it it is the scarcity effect basically, Dr Paul Harrison, a senior lecturer in consumer behaviour and advertising at the Deakin Graduate School of Business, said.

If lots of people want it, it has more value. If we are looking around and everyone is grabbing for towels, even if we dont need them, we feel that if we miss out which the whole scarcity thing is; well miss out on something important.

That is part of what makes us human we are really responding to animal instincts at sale time and research has actually shown that a different form of thinking goes on in our brain when we see words like 'sale' or 'free'.

We actually over ride the rational part of our brain with the emotional part of our brain, so it is a chemical process as much as anything else.

That psychological response, Dr Harrison said, was helped along by marketing messages.

In a positive light, I would say that people tend to respond well to marketing messages, but in a negative light, you could probably argue that people have a tendency to look at what other people are doing and what messages are being broadcast to help us to make decisions; so if we are constantly being told that these sales are amazing and lots of people are going to go there, then theres a degree of behaviour which suggests maybe if I dont go, Ill miss out.

One of the really interesting things is the way retailers are saying it is not going to be a great year, it is only a growth of three to four percent, but in reality, that kind of growth is pretty good, we just got used to unreasonable amounts of growth from the early '90s until recently, particularly for retailers.
