Julia Koeppe receives SUNY Oswego Provost’s Award for Mentoring in Scholarly and Creative Activities – NNY360

OSWEGO - Dedication to the success of student researchers earned Julia Koeppe of the chemistry faculty this years Provosts Award for Mentoring in Scholarly and Creative Activities for SUNY Oswego.

In four years at Oswego, Koeppe has mentored 50 registered student researchers in biochemistry. Students flock to her laboratory because the work she does is relevant and biochemistry methods she uses are modern, said chemistry professor Kestas Bendiskas, who nominated her for the award.

MaryCatherine Rice, who earned her masters and bachelors degrees through SUNY Oswego, then a scientific position in the pharmaceutical industry with Pfizer, credits Koeppes trust and lessons with instilling the skills and tools I needed to excel both in my graduate program and in my professional career.

Dr. Koeppe is incredibly good at reading students and can see the potential in everyone, Rice wrote, which means helping students achieve things in their research and leadership they might not have thought possible.

She prepared me technically as well as provided the soft skills necessary to interact with fellow researchers, professors and eventual employers, Rice said. By challenging me and showing me what I was able to do as a researcher both academically and creatively, she completely changed my view of myself in this field.

Rice described Koeppe as a role model in science, and any student that is able to work with her in the future is extremely fortunate. She cares about the academic and future professional development of her students.

Dr. Julia Koeppe goes above and beyond with her duties in mentoring students in their scholarly and creative work, wrote Vanessa Wiltsie, a 2018 SUNY Oswego graduate who is now a Ph.D. student at the University of Alabama.

Dr. Koeppe has numerous strengths, among them being how she is always available to her students, past and present, whether it be by email, phone call or office appointment, Wiltsie said. She genuinely cares about each one of her students and takes the time to get to know them on a personal level.

For Wiltsie, these opportunities included an invitation to do research with Koeppe, which led to attending an antimicrobial resistance boot camp at Rutgers University, and a chance to present at the Biophysical Members Society Meeting in Baltimore -- where Wiltsie secured her current studies by presenting her research to the graduate recruiting committee with the University of Alabama.

Dr. Koeppe not only gives her students the best mentoring regarding planning for our professional futures, she personally sets aside time to learn the personal goals of her students and plans out a way to achieve them, Wiltsie wrote. Dr. Koeppe has sent students to universities and medical schools across the United States.

Another of those students is Ali Khan, a senior majoring in biochemistry and biology who plans to start in a Ph.D. program this fall at the University of Iowas Carver Medical School. Dr. Koeppe has been a great mentor, teacher and an overall genuine human being, wrote Khan, who added that Koeppe made it possible to present research at the annual Biophysical Conference earlier this year in San Diego.

She taught me how to be resilient, troubleshoot problems and write effectively, Khan said. She goes above and beyond her role as an educator; most notably through her generosity and development of strong personal relationships with her students. It is not uncommon for students to stop by her office for a chat, a cup of tea or a baked good in addition to answering any of their questions.

It is clear to me that Dr. Koeppe has such a genuine love and passion for the work that she does, wrote senior biochemistry major Maggie Miller. It makes it very easy, as a student, to want to be involved in such projects when the professor is excited about it too.

Bendiskas noted that Koeppe -- who earned her Ph.D. from University of California, San Diego, and had a pair of postdoctorate placements at the University of Oxford -- has an active National Science Foundation grant and consistently secures additional internal grants to support student research contributing to the knowledge base of protein biochemistry. Her lab focuses on the study of protein interactions involved in the activation and regulation of the complement system. This complement system is an important part of innate immunity, where misregulation can lead to inflammatory diseases.

Julia helps students succeed not only by engaging students but also by providing successful outcomes of their work, Bendiskas wrote, noting she has submitted manuscripts with as many as three student co-authors, and has become known as an excellent and beloved educator.

The Provosts Award for Mentoring in Scholarly and Creative Activities is designed as recognition of a career highlighting significant accomplishments in mentoring students in scholarly or creative activity at SUNY Oswego.

Pivoting the Lab | News – WPI News

D-Term 2020 was supposed to look like past D-Terms in Destin Heilmans Experimental Biochemistry labstudents were going to learn how to isolate proteins in e.coli, and experience the flow and feel of a lab on campus.

Kathleen Donovan 21

Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and all of WPIs classes were moved online, including Heilmans.

So, in typical WPI fashion, the teaching professor of chemistry & biochemistry pivoted, and transformed his in-person lab into a digital oneone that charged students to examine the coronavirus from stem-to-stern.

I thought, Why not study the very thing that has us locked in our houses? says Heilman, whose background is in virology (he even has a 3-D printed model of a virus protein on his desk).

With the term now over, he and his students reflected on the challenges and opportunities they had in virtually dissecting the coronavirus, with a particular focus on the viruss proteins, and which ones make it wreak havoc in humans. During the class, he gave his seven students documents on those proteins to read, including the work done on coronavirus by Dmitry Korkin, and challenged them to pick which one they wanted to study.

Heilman maintained his usual hands-on approach to experiments, even via remote learning. After all, some of the most important lessons students learn in the lab isnt content, he says. Its the nuances of the lab itself, being able to feel things in your hands, making mistakes. As a result, instead of physically working with students in the lab, he talked them through scenarios of mistakesmaterial spills, equipment mishapsthat could happen during their experiments, and asked them to figure out how to make the appropriate fixes.

Joe Dainis 20

The students really sank their teeth into it, he says.

Students werent champing at the bit to do a digital lab at first, and werent sure about online lab work.

I was nervous, Ive never taken online classes before, says Kathleen Donovan 21, a biochemistry major.

But, as D-Term progressed and students got their sea legs in Heilmans digital lab, their excitement blossomed.

Some students say Heilmans digital lab gave them valuable real-world experience. Being able to look at a lab and experiment from an entirely different perspective has a lot of beneficial uses, particularly in the research field, where you are developing your own protocols, says Joe Dainis 20, who is double majoring in biology & biotechnology and biochemistry.

My favorite part of the class was learning some of the techniques researchers use to study enzymes that are therapeutic targets, such as the SARS-CoV2 replicase, says Olivia Hunker 20, a biochemistry major. Im planning to pursue a PhD after I graduate and it gave me a better understanding of how to approach problems like this.

Olivia Hunker 20

Students say learning about the pandemic in the lab enables them and Heilman to learn from each other, too. Every meeting, there was an instance where we discussed COVID-19 and a student brought up a detail that Professor Heilman did not know regarding this virus, and vice versa, Dainis says. It was a unique experience to be in a professor-student relationship where you are both improving your knowledge regarding a topic that no one is an expert in.

Its nice to understand on a molecular level how the virus is working, says Donovan. Its nice to look at the research thats already been done on coronavirus. It puts into perspective how important research is, and that there is still so much to learn.

One of the most important things that Heilman learned from flipping his lab is that the process was easier than he thought it would be, and its helping to ready students for the world post-WPI.

The transition from a lab-based class to online was easy because WPI does projects, he says. Students can easily adapt, and theyll be able to digest information about coronavirus and other viruses for the greater community.

MBA after BCom; subject combo with maths; and scope in biochemistry – The Tribune

Will MBA after Bcom improve my career prospects?

Q. What are my career options if I pursue MCom instead of MBA after completing BCom?

Megha Bisht

A. While an MBA is a professional, job-oriented PG programme in management, an MCom is somewhat more academic & theoretical in content and approach.

After completing your MCom, the main avenues open to you those in Teaching, Accounting & Audit, Taxation, Finance, and Banking.

By adding a BEd to your MCom youll be eligible to teach Commerce at the Plus II level. And if you clear the NET exam, you can even teach at the college level.

MCom graduates can find suitable openings in financial research and analysis, taxation, stock market, insurance, financial planning and advisory, banking, financial services sales in all kinds of financial product and service providers besides those in accounting, financial processing/modeling and documentation as well as in KPOs.

You can sit for general competitive entrance exams such as the Civil Services or State Selection Commission. Your MCom qualification will also allow you to take the selection exams for the Income Tax, Customs and Excise Departments, Comptroller & Auditor General, Bank Probationary Officers.

Which subject combinations are available with maths in Class XI?

Q. I am in Class X. I am confused about choosing a subject next year. I want to pursue maths, but I do not know which other subjects I can take along with it. Can you help me with this?

Arvind Kumar

A. There are three streams in which you can take maths:

Career opportunities are truly wide and varied for anyone who has a talent and passion for mathematics. No wonder its called the queen of sciences!

Whats more, mathematics is not just for mathematicians. The skills you develop while studying for a math degree such as the ability to think logically as well as in abstraction find valuable and multifaceted applications in virtually every walk of life.

Some of the areas where number-crunchers are particularly valued are in: investment banking, insurance companies (Actuaries), taxation, engineering consulting, medical research, bioinformatics, computer science, computer security, data science and Big data, defense, operations research, market research (specifically quantitative) and media planning.

Going places with BSc biochem

Q. I had PCB in Class XII, but I am not very hopeful of clearing the NEET. I am interested in joining BSc biochemistry in DU. Apart from research and lectureship, what other career options can I go for?

Arun Shukla

A. Though personally I think you should give NEET a shot and have a positive attitude about your performance, it is good that you have a plan B in place. And it is a good plan as biochemists are playing an increasingly significant role in biological, environmental and clinical fields, with employment areas stretching from health care to agriculture. Biochemical analysis is used in clinical and forensic science (e.g. DNA fingerprinting) and in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Growth areas, where recruitment is intense, include biotechnology and bioinformatics.

Employment prospects for Biochemists with a master's degree are on the rise. While some go on to pursue research and further study, the rest find employment in industry, Pharma, education and related areas.

Of course, you are free to look at other options in life sciences and healthcare industry or anything else for that matter at the PG level. All the best!

John Leyba named dean of the College of Science and Mathematics – News at UNG

Dr. John Leyba has been named the new dean of the College of Science & Mathematics at the University of North Georgia (UNG).

Leyba has served as interim dean for the past year and had been associate dean of the College of Science and Mathematics at UNG since 2018. Before that, Leyba was the head of the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry. He was hired for the job in August 2014 after working for Newman University in Wichita, Kansas, for 12 years and subcontractors for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for more than 11 years.

"During my time as interim, it was surreal. But I got a good feel for the job and I enjoyed doing it," the father of eight children said. "So when UNG posted the job, it hit home that I had to apply."

After a national search, Leyba was hired and will become official on May 1.

"We felt it was important to conduct a national search to identify the next dean for the College of Science & Math," said Dr. Chaudron Gille, provost and senior vice president of Academic Affairs. "Dr. Leyba brings a wealth of experience in industry as well as years of academic leadership to the position. He was clearly the most qualified candidate and was unanimously endorsed by the committee."

Leyba earned his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Northeast Missouri State University, now called Truman State University, in 1986. Four years later, he received his doctoral degree in nuclear chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley.

As the new dean, Leyba has set his sights on completing current goals and establishing new ones.

Some of the current projects Leyba established were the electronic newsletter called "Momentum" and the College of Science & Mathematics Facebook and Instagram pages. The newsletter is sent to stakeholders and supporters to showcase the college's efforts. The two social media platforms are used to inform students and alumni about the college's activities.

"Scientists are not the best communicators," Leyba said. "We need to blow our own horn about what we are doing and accomplishing here."

Leyba also anticipates the completion of the new North Georgia Astronomical Observatory near UNG's Dahlonega Campus as well as the creation of a small observatory on the Gainesville Campus. He is also anticipating the completion of the new greenhouse in Gainesville. Both the North Georgia Astronomical Observatory and Gainesville greenhouse were part of the College of Science & Mathematics' strategic plan that Leyba helped author and looks forward to implementing.

"The strategic plan got everyone on the same page with a common set of goals," he said. "An important part was the inclusivity of all campuses. It had an important milestone for each campus. No campus is more important than another. As a team we will move forward and achieve those goals."

To do that, Leyba plans to continue a tradition he learned from a boss in the private sector. Early in his career, Leyba worked for the DOE's Savannah River Site in Aiken, South Carolina, and the Rocky Flats Site in Colorado.

"Every Friday, my first boss would walk the halls. He'd come into your office and talk to you about anything," Leyba said. "That's what I would like to do. I want to show up on any campus unannounced and walk the halls."

There he wants to acquaint himself with all of the faculty and staff and learn their personalities, interests and ambitions. He also wants to determine the needs of each campus.

"Each one has its own strengths and challenges. They can tailor their courses to the campus and students' needs," he said. "As a manager, I want to enable people to do their jobs better."

‘Like I was calling into the void’: Virginia Tech classes in the age of coronavirus – Roanoke Times

BLACKSBURG Ozzie Abaye bustles about her micro kitchen, arranging packets of lentils together and pouring chickpeas in a glass measuring cup. On her countertop, beside the lemon and bottle of tahini, sit a blender, a laptop and a small video camera affixed to a tripod.

Thank you for connecting with me, Hokies and friends, and also some relatives, too, she tells the computer. This is a way to stay connected while were staying apart.

Abaye, a professor in Virginia Techs school of plant and environmental sciences, wont let the new coronavirus interfere with hands-on teaching. So on Monday she adopted her courses food lab where students cook foods from crops studied in class for the age of social distancing. Students, as well as former students and family members, cooked at home, watching Abaye make hummus and samosas over Zoom, the videoconferencing program, and Facebook Live.

Food is love. Food is everything. Food is togetherness, Abaye says in her empty kitchen. I wish you could share this with me today. But, unusually, I dont have anybody to share it with.

Like I was calling into the void

Since Tech resumed classes after an extended spring break a few weeks ago, the university has moved roughly 4,500 courses including labs and music classes exclusively online. With that extra week of spring break to prepare, faculty have found creative ways to keep students engaged remotely from cooking over Zoom to TikTok video assignments, from cello lessons to virtual construction site tours.

At the same time, faculty and students find themselves working through kinks of the new online teaching world: from the more innocuous cameos of pajama-clad undergraduates and an appearance by a cat named Misha, to more serious concerns about students lack of motivation and existing inequalities that have been exacerbated by spotty home internet and challenging home lives.

I think more than ever this is bringing to everyones attention that circumstances are not equal, said Elizabeth McLain, an instructor of musicology. Not everyone has a fair shake when it comes to education.

For many professors, a major learning curve has been wrapping ones head around Zoom the now ubiquitous video tool that comes with its own set of pitfalls. One of those includes the risk of Zoombombing, when outsiders gain access to virtual meetings and troll them.

I was Zoombombed, and it seemed almost quaint, the penis joke that the guy asked me, said Alan Weinstein, an associate professor of cello, bass and chamber music. I was kind of like, thats all you got? You go to the trouble to figure out how to do this and you cant be clever or personal or racist? Come on.

(A Tech spokesman said only two reports of Zoombombing have been reported to the universitys IT department, which has provided information to faculty to prevent intrusions).

For Kristopher Hite, a biochemistry professor, his usual tendency to draw figures on a board and pause, asking students to fill in blanks, hasnt translated quite as well over Zoom.

The biggest difficulty for me as somebody whos used to in-person instruction is that immediate feedback, Hite said. I would do the same thing. It felt like I was calling into the void and nobody was responding back.

Hite recalled being on campus when the decision came down last month to move classes online. TV news vans pulled up to Burruss Hall as he watched Tech administrators come down the steps to make the announcement.

Its been a weird time, Hite said. The very first thing I had the students do when we came back after the extended spring break was they just told me how the pandemic was affecting their lives.

Taylor Schindler, a 19-year-old freshman from Roanoke County, says she has missed the camaraderie of college life and has found it challenging to maintain a disciplined schedule.

I feel like Im just glued to my computer all the time now, she said.

The biochemistry and clinical neuroscience major credits the university with revising its grading system for more flexibility and credits professors and advisers for being supportive throughout.

In a way, it is comforting to know our professors are just as confused as we are and theyre learning about this process as much as we are, Schindler said.

Glenda Gillaspy, professor and head of Techs department of biochemistry, has even restructured one of her courses to focus on the molecular biology of the new coronavirus.

Its very difficult for students to focus, and I think its difficult for them to rationalize just getting all-in and understanding the molecular nuances of something when you have this overarching pandemic around you, she said. I think the class is going really well because this is one case where students can see this is worth my time and energy to dig into this. I think theyre highly engaged in the material because its incredibly relevant right now.

High school with ashtrays

Do you know what a siciliano is?

No, the student says. Wait. Its a kind of pizza, isnt it?

Yes. Im hungry, so I thought Id ask you about a kind of pizza. No. Its an Italian dance.

Inside a modern house perched on a mountain in Montgomery County, Weinstein, the music professor, gives Charlotte Cannon a cello lesson over Zoom. The senior has opted to take an extra semester in hopes of giving a recital, which are all currently canceled. Weinstein explains that a siciliano is characterized by a lilting rhythm, like the melody of Silent Night.

OK, so you know that now, he says.

Yeah.

College! he says in mock wonder. High school with ashtrays, as we say. Isnt that what it is?

After working their way through a Bach sonata, professor and student turn to a Dvork concerto.

Cannon starts playing. Weinstein listens. He stops her and begins a history lesson: You know Dvork came to America?

While in Iowa, Dvorks sister-in-law died. The concerto Cannon plays includes a section from a Czech folk song she loved and a variation of a nursery rhyme she used to sing.

It was about her, and he was devastated that she died, Weinstein says. Its like all of a sudden he remembers shes gone and hes anguished. Cannon was approaching the piece too over the top, not quietly enough. The whole second theme is a memory to her, Weinstein explains.

Could you start like its almost a prayer?

TikTok and site tours

McLain, the musicology instructor, would catch her sophomores between classes making silly videos. Inspired by that, as well as by a colleague at the University of Michigan, where McLain is pursuing her doctorate, McLain came up with an innovative way for students to remember musical vocabulary.

This really is not online learning. This is emergency learning, she said. This is about shifting courses that were never intended to be online.

Every week, students in one of McLains classes make short videos through the popular app TikTok as a way to illustrate and remember terms like cabaret and Rossini crescendo.

Cat Lasky, a 22-year-old sophomore from Sterling, had never used TikTok before.

I was trying to avoid downloading it because I knew that I would spend way too much time on it, and I was correct about that, Lasky said. But it has been really fun learning how to use it and seeing all my classmates on it.

While several students expressed appreciation for how faculty have adopted courses, some have not been as impressed.

Were all learning less, said Robert Bass, a 22-year-old senior from Midlothian, who noted Tech isnt reimbursing any tuition costs. The quality of the education that we were receiving was degraded a lot.

Bass, a neuroscience student, mentioned his traditional lab courses are no longer possible.

(Hite, the biochemistry professor who helped adapt a lab course, noted that those students have gained in-depth understanding of molecular structures via computer modeling, where data about enzymes that is usually gleaned from a lab is now provided.)

Like McLain, Ashley Johnson, who teaches construction engineering, has also used videos in new ways for her introductory course. Typically, students go to multiple building sites, field trips that arent possible now.

While visiting family over spring break in coastal North Carolina, Johnson learned all classes would move online. She began taking videos and photos of a nearby residential construction site, and turned it into a virtual field trip.

Recent alums have also helped out. One gave a virtual guest lecture about his marine construction firm, while another sent Johnson a video tour of a Washington, D.C., high-rise under construction.

With so many minutes of video footage, Johnson has been intentional about compressing the sizes and breaking up large videos into smaller units. That way, students with slower internet access will be able to download them and watch them more quickly.

Even Johnson, who lives in rural Giles County, has had issues with the digital divide.

Shes driven to Techs empty campus to access the universitys network. She sat in her car to upload an hourlong guest lecture.

You cannot measure love

Back in Abayes kitchen, she waxes about the Egyptian origins of hummus and her personal cooking philosophy.

You know you cannot measure love. So I dont believe in measuring anything, she says to the camera. For your sake today Im going to measure.

The shift to online courses was hard for Abaye, a Tech grad who has been teaching almost 27 years.

My first reaction was I cried, basically, she said. The idea of moving to an online platform was basically devastating to me personally.

But as Abaye moves around her kitchen, narrating her culinary movements like Julia Child I forgot garlic! Is it upside down again? I have burned the kitchen once or twice before she appears to gain confidence before the video camera. Her teaching assistants work through technical difficulties and field questions from students.

As Abaye heats up oil to make the lentil samosas, she returns again to her crusade against precision.

I cannot stand measuring, Abaye says. Sometimes friends are wary of her estimations. They ask her, What if it doesnt come out?

Her reply: Everything comes out right eventually, so Im not worried about that.

How Do You Teach The Most Hands-On Subject Science Without A Lab? – WBEZ

Marcie Gutierrezs first and second graders had just planted lima beans and grass seed for a unit about the life cycle of plants when Chicago Public Schools announced it was shifting classes online to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

She wondered how to continue when they wouldnt be together at John Hay Academy in Austin to watch the seeds grow. Then she thought of a solution.

Why dont I send it home with them? she said.

She prepared little packages of dirt and seeds for students to grow and post photos on their class website. One student jumped right in. Seven-year-old Alex Orsornio is taking photos and documenting his plants progress in his journal daily.

It is growing slow, he wrote one day. Mom thinks its growing fast.

As kindergarten through college students across Chicago and the country adjust to online classes during the COVID-19 pandemic, one course that can be difficult to teach remotely is science.

Science teachers are getting creative as they take a hands-on subject and teach it from a distance. Experts encourage science teachers to think about how students homes could be used as a laboratory and to get students off the computer to learn science concepts.

Theres lots of stuff that can be done in nature and in the world without any kind of sophisticated equipment, especially for younger children, said Maria Varelas, a professor of science education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. How can we really use this moment to actually do some things that we wouldnt be able to do in the classroom?

Varelas said just noticing birds or insects on a walk around the neighborhood can help students learn about behaviors. It can also reduce inequities caused by the digital divide; students dont need an internet connection to walk around the block.

For older students, it can be tougher to shift science online. Equipment is more expensive, and the topics are much more complex.

Earlier this month, Loyola University Chicago professor Carissa Hipsher walked her environmental chemistry class through a lab on Zoom using materials she sent home with them.

This wasnt an activity I had originally planned for today but obviously things had to change a little bit, Hipsher told her students as she explained how they could measure how porous materials are when filled with water.

Then, she split students into small groups on Zoom to complete the experiment.

Student Hannah Sather tuned in from her home in Seattle, where the time difference means shes starting classes much earlier than normal. She and a friend drove back to Seattle after Loyola shut down, stopping at her family cabin in South Dakota so she could complete the previous lab for this class before continuing the drive west. She and her lab partner discuss each step over Zoom, and Hipsher periodically jumps in to see if they have questions.

Their next lab will require students to gather a soil sample from their homes, which now means the class will have a wide variety from across the country. Hipsher is choosing to see this as a silver lining during all of this chaos.

We werent going to get that kind of opportunity before, she said. So [were] kind of making something cool out of it.

Other science professors are also finding new ways to continue class.

At UIC, a human evolution class did a virtual scavenger hunt at the Field Museum where you can take tours of the museum on their website since students cant visit in person. One biochemistry class is studying reactions of carbohydrates at home by using carbs that students can find in their kitchens.

And the teaching assistants in another UIC biochemistry class are asking students to take them through an experiment as if theyre in the lab.

For the students to get the most out of their online lab experience, I believe they need to visualize the details of each experiment in their minds, said teaching assistant Maryna Salkovski. If theyre not visualizing themselves performing every detail of the experiment, then their takeaway becomes a lot less than what it could be.

As the shutdown continues, teachers have started to think about new projects. Gutierrez spent last weekend driving flower kits to her elementary students homes for the next unit on plant life, including Alex. He said he misses his friends and teacher, so he enjoys looking at their plants and flowers progress online. Gutierrez said thats the goal.

Once I post one video, then like seven others come right away in the next half hour, Gutierrez said. I think theyre liking that engagement, so they can see how their classmates are doing.

For those who dont have good internet access at home, she hopes they can share what they grew once students can return to school. Right now, thats tentatively slated for May 1.

Raffle to win prized Clarets shirt will help fund end of Covid 19 party for carers across Burnley Pendle and Ribble Valley – Clitheroe Advertiser

The collection of shirts belong to dedicated clarets fan Chris Flynn who has kindly donated them to a raffle being organised by his wife Diane who works for the charity, Carers Link Lancashire.

A carers review and support officer and volunteer co ordinator, Diane is planning a special 'Victory over the Virus' party at the end of the pandemic for the many carers across Burnley, Pendle, Ribble Valley and Hyndburn.

And to raise funds for it she came up with the idea for the raffle. She kicked it off by offering a football signed by the current team as the top prize and then Chris, who is the biochemistry manager for East Lancs Hospitals NHS Trust, came up with idea to include the shirts which include some retro and vintage ones.

Tickets are 5 for five and if yours is drawn you can choose which shirt you would like.

Tickets can be bought on a justgiving page Diane has set up and you can also make a donation to the party fund which now stands at 95.

Carers Link supports around 11,500 carers in total. The youngest is six and the oldest is a 100-year-old lady who cares for her 98-year-old husband.

All the services Carers Links offers, such as the weekly carers' cafe, have now all gone virtual to provide a lifeline for them.

Diane said: "We are keeping in touch with the carers to keep their spirits up and also put them in touch with other support services they may need.

" People are struggling even more than usual - being an unpaid carer is no easy task and not a very appreciated one most of the time.

"I wanted to raise funds to hold a big 'Carers Victory over the Virus Party' whuch will be a big celebration at the end of all this madness to show appreciation to all those who have been through this time - often on their own with little help or respite.

"Something to look forward to for all our unpaid carers."

Those Who Purchased Changmao Biochemical Engineering (HKG:954) Shares Three Years Ago Have A 35% Loss To Show For It – Simply Wall St

In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, its worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But if you try your hand at stock picking, your risk returning less than the market. We regret to report that long term Changmao Biochemical Engineering Company Limited (HKG:954) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 35% in three years, versus a market return of about 2.7%. Furthermore, its down 20% in about a quarter. Thats not much fun for holders. Of course, this share price action may well have been influenced by the 13% decline in the broader market, throughout the period.

Check out our latest analysis for Changmao Biochemical Engineering

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Although the share price is down over three years, Changmao Biochemical Engineering actually managed to grow EPS by 21% per year in that time. Given the share price reaction, one might suspect that EPS is not a good guide to the business performance during the period (perhaps due to a one-off loss or gain). Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.

Since the change in EPS doesnt seem to correlate with the change in share price, its worth taking a look at other metrics.

We note that the dividend seems healthy enough, so that probably doesnt explain the share price drop. Revenue has been pretty flat over three years, so that isnt an obvious reason shareholders would sell. A closer look at revenue and profit trends might yield insights.

The graphic below depicts how earnings and revenue have changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

This free interactive report on Changmao Biochemical Engineerings balance sheet strength is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Changmao Biochemical Engineerings TSR for the last 3 years was -28%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And theres no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

The total return of 17% received by Changmao Biochemical Engineering shareholders over the last year isnt far from the market return of -16%. So last year was actually even worse than the last five years, which cost shareholders 4.7% per year. It will probably take a substantial improvement in the fundamental performance for the company to reverse this trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. Weve identified 3 warning signs with Changmao Biochemical Engineering , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.

Building the batteries of cells – Science Codex

Mitochondria are the powerhouse of cells which continuously convert energy from food into the chemical energy currency called ATP. This essential process depends on large protein complexes within the inner membrane of mitochondria acting similar to batteries. A new study, led by Dr. Ruchika Anand and Prof. Andreas Reichert, Heinrich-Heine-University Duesseldorf, Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology I, now found that two lipid-binding proteins located inside of mitochondria control the overall stability of these batteries. This was further shown to be linked to a unique mitochondrial lipid and its synthesis: cardiolipin. Increased build-up of a sugar-modified form of MIC26 was earlier found in blood plasma of the patients suffering from diabetic cardiomyopathy. This study provides the first link between mitochondrial structure, lipids and assembly of large respiratory protein units of mitochondria and their importance in diabetes and heart diseases.

Fat- or lipid-binding proteins called apolipoproteins are well known to bind to lipids (e.g. phospholipids and cholesterol) and to mediate formation of lipoproteins (e.g. HDL or LDL). The main function of lipoproteins is to help to transport lipids in the blood. They take part in uptake, clearance and distribution of all lipids in an organism. Several classes of these proteins are found with different functions. Surprisingly, two apolipoproteins (Apolipoprotein O (APOO/MIC26) and Apolipoprotein O-like (APOOL/MIC27) were earlier found at a location distinct from the blood, namely in mitochondria and associated with a large protein assembly called the MICOS complex. Apolipoprotein O (MIC26) occurs in two forms, a sugar-bound and a non-sugar bound form. While the non-sugar bound form is present inside the mitochondria, the sugar-bound form is found in the blood plasma. Increased quantity of the sugar-bound form in blood plasma was interestingly associated with diabetes and diabetic cardiomyopathy. A mutation in APOO/MIC26 is associated to mitochondrial myopathy, lactic acidosis, cognitive impairment and autistic features.

The research groups of Dr. Ruchika Anand and Prof. Dr. Andreas Reichert from the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology I of the Medical faculty at the HHU in collaboration with scientists Dr. Ilka Wittig from the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, Germany, and Dr. Thomas Eichmann from the University of Graz, Austria determined the function of these apolipoproteins. They found that the cooperation of the two apolipoproteins of mitochondria (APOO/MIC26 and APOOL/MIC27) are required for the global stability of major mitochondrial protein complexes involved in energy conversion by oxidative phosphorylation. These mitochondrial complexes are arranged in large assemblies so that they can work properly and efficiently to convert the energy from the food into the chemical energy in the form of ATP. The internal structure of mitochondria is arranged and sculptured to accommodate these batteries in the folds of the inner membrane called cristae. APOO/MIC26 and APOOL/MIC27 cooperate to form proper mitochondrial structure including tubular structures located at the entry point of cristae termed crista junctions. The study revealed that both proteins are required together to maintain the correct levels of the mitochondrial specific lipid cardiolipin. The aforementioned scientists found that simultaneous deletion of APOO/MIC26 and APOOL/MIC27 in a cell cause major disturbances in cellular respiration together with occurrence of abnormal mitochondrial structure. This study exemplifies the importance of mitochondrial membrane structures and large protein assemblies in diseases such as diabetic cardiomyopathy and mitochondrial myopathy. This could help to gain further insights for future therapies. The work was published after peer review in Life Science Alliance on August 11th, 2020.
