Established in 1962, the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) supports basic research that increases understanding of biological processes while also laying the foundation for advances in disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention in the U.S. NIGMS is headed by Director Jon R. With cat photos and sometimes scathing irony, Mathieu Rebeaud, a Swiss-based researcher in biochemistry, has nearly tripled his Twitter following since the coronavirus pandemic began.

With 14,000 followers, he posts almost daily, giving explanations on the latest scientific research and, in particular, aims to fight misinformation that spreads as fast as the virus itself.

He is among a growing number of doctors, academics and institutions who in recent weeks have adapted and amplified their scientific messaging in hopes of countering what has been termed an infodemic -- a deluge of information, including widespread false claims, which experts say can pose a serious threat to public health.

To cut through the noise however, it is imperative to work quickly and maximise social media engagement to get simple prevention messages across to the public, according to researchers and specialists.

"In the case of the COVID-19 pandemic, conspiracy theories provide complete, simple, seemingly rationalistic and watertight explanations," Kinga Polynczuk-Alenius, a University of Helsinki researcher, said.

"This is in stark contrast to the available scientific knowledge -- complex, fragmented, changeable and contested -- and to the actions of political decision-makers and state authorities, which appear haphazard and self-contradictory," she added.

In February, British medical journal The Lancet warned that "the rapid dissemination of trustworthy information" was needed most during a period of uncertainty.

This includes transparent identification of cases, data sharing and unhampered communication, as well as peer-reviewed research, it said.

Rigorous and time-heavy scientific studies and publications, however, compete with the immediacy of social media and a public often demanding firm and definitive answers.

"How do we communicate in this context of radical uncertainty?" asked Mikael Chambru, a scientific communication specialist at France's University of Grenoble Alpes.

Jean-Francois Chambon, a doctor and director of communications at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, said he had no choice but to forcefully deny a widely shared video in March accusing the institution of having "created" the new coronavirus.

"We must go to any lengths" to debunk the lies, he said.

The institute created a web page dedicated to educating the public about the virus, Chambon said.

"We realised that there was a lot of 'fake news' on the subject," he added.

The Pasteur Institute currently has a combined 16,000 new subscribers a month on its social media networks, he said, compared with 4,000 before the pandemic.

Jean-Gabriel Ganascia, chairman of the ethics committee at France's National Centre for Scientific Research, agreed that the scientific community must counterattack in such situations.

"We don't have a choice," he told AFP.

Earlier this month, the Red Cross launched what it said was the first global network of social media influencers to battle misinformation and spread lifesaving content about the pandemic.

The World Health Organization, meanwhile, has entered into an agreement with Facebook to transmit information directly to users via personal message services.

But it is often individual doctors and researchers who can have a strong influence online.

Dutch microbiologist Elisabeth Bik tweeted a one-sentence summary of a vast study on the effects of antiviral drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine last week, just hours after its release.

Her tweet -- "Each drug combination was associated with *lower* survival and more ventricular arrhythmias." -- sparked a lively and wide-ranging debate online.

Scientists involved in the debate want to forge a "culture of science" among the public to help them understand what they hear and read, Chambru said.

Rather than simply imposing the view of a leading authority without any explanation, they aim to help people understand how science works including the need for studies to abide by rules and standards, he added.

"The position of authority would be extremely unpopular with the public," Ganascia agreed.

Rebeaud, the biochemistry researcher popular on Twitter, said he was much less present on social media before the pandemic but had felt drawn to defend science.

The battle however feels unbalanced, said the researcher, who works at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland.

"Dismantling nonsense takes 10 times more energy than spreading it," he said, agreeing with the findings of a 2018 study by the magazine Science which noted that "lies spread faster than the truth".

Some scientists have called for a review of science education so that the public is less permeable to false information.

Information campaigns "cannot be perceived as an exclusive antidote to fight fake news," Italian communications researcher Mafalda Sandrini said.

The aim of this study is to demonstrate non-inferiority and cost-effectiveness of disease activity guided adalimumab interval lengthening compared to standard dosing of every other week (EOW).METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The Lengthening Adalimumab Dosing Interval (LADI) study is a pragmatic, multicentre, open label, randomised controlled non-inferiority trial. Non-inferiority is reached if the difference in cumulative incidence of persistent (>8 weeks) flares does not exceed the non-inferiority margin of 15%. 174CD patients on adalimumab maintenance therapy in long-term (>9 months) clinical and biochemical remission will be included (C-reactive protein (CRP) <10mg/L, faecal calprotectin (FC) <150g/g, Harvey-Bradshaw Index (HBI) <5). Patients will be randomised 2:1 into the intervention (adalimumab interval lengthening) or control group (adalimumab EOW). The intervention group will lengthen the adalimumab administration interval to every 3 weeks, and after 24 weeks to every 4 weeks. Clinical and biochemical disease activity will be monitored every 12 weeks by physician global assessment, HBI, CRP and FC. In case of disease flare, dosing will be increased. A flare is defined as two of three of the following criteria; FC>250 g/g, CRP10 mg/l, HBI5. Secondary outcomes include cumulative incidence of transient flares, adverse events, predictors for successful dose reduction and cost-effectiveness.ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The study is approved by the Medical Ethics Committee Arnhem-Nijmegen, the Netherlands (registration number NL58948.091.16). Dear Campus Community,

Fiat Lux let there be light. The University of California motto, emblazoned on our logo and various places around campus, holds more meaning for me now than ever. In the midst of the trials and uncertainty we have faced as a result of COVID-19, UC Merced and her sister campuses have shone a light to our communities, to our state and to the world.

As Regent John A. Prez recounted in his remarks at the UC Board of Regents meeting earlier this week, UC campuses all over the state are stepping up to create innovative solutions to the major challenges facing us in this moment. At UC Berkeley, biochemistry students are manufacturing hand sanitizer for first responders. At UCSF, medical personnel have volunteered to go to New York and the Navajo Nation to assist health care workers. At UCSB and UCSD, engineers are designing and 3-D printing face shields and ventilators.

Here at UC Merced, our own public health and engineering professors are leading critical research on telehealth for low-income Californians, a low-cost and user-friendly sanitizer, a new means of rapid COVID-19 antibody detection and risk assessment of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater for vulnerable populations.

Beyond these groundbreaking faculty contributions, frontline staff have also stepped up to serve the more than 200 students who were not able to return home to loved ones. Many thanks to these colleagues for supporting our scholars who stayed on campus to brave the storm.

As you know, Dr. Juan Snchez Muoz was nominated by President Janet Napolitano and unanimously appointed UC Merceds fourth chancellor by the Board of Regents on Wednesday. As I have grown to intimately know and love the UC Merced community over the past year, I am certain the regents selected a perfect leader for this unique and burgeoning campus. I look forward to working with Dr. Muoz during this transition, and formally welcoming him into his new role in early July.

In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Muoz expressed a deep commitment to a centuries-old promise that the UC system would be of the people and for the people and we will continue to live those values here at UC Merced. Our People First Workgroup is a testimony to that very promise, as it works to ensure our response to COVID-19 and our eventual return to campus is guided by the vital principle of putting our people our staff, faculty, and students first.

Its also important to note that the regents, after a very long and robust debate about equity, made a decision that will have ripple effects across the country and far into the future: The UC will suspend the requirement for SAT/ACT tests for admission through 2024, and in 2025 we will either have designed our own standardized test or eliminate the use of tests entirely in admissions decisions. The implications for current and future undergraduate admissions will be significant, potentially opening up the possibility of a UC education to an even broader swath of young people.

Finally, I want to express congratulations once more to the graduates of 2020 the first class in UC Merceds history to graduate virtually. Our newest alumni took our new normal in stride and with an outpouring of joy that illuminated our digital landscape and brightened our week. Though the road they have before them is uncertain, the resourcefulness and grace with which they pivoted during this crisis will always light their path.

Graduates Urged to Use Lessons From the Climb to Look Beyond the Summit – UANews

How does college compare to climbing the world's tallest mountain? There are a few ways, according to someone who's done it twice.

Alison Levine, a mountaineer, adventurer and university alumna, called on her trips up Mount Everest to show the class of 2020 that the challenges they overcame this spring will only make them stronger.

Levine's speech during the university's 156th Commencement on Friday addressed head-on the unpredictable and trying times that graduates face as they enter the workforce amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The speech was delivered via video from Levine's home during the university's first-ever virtual ceremony.

"When it comes down to it, what will help you more than math or history or biology or computer science is, indeed, resilience," Levine said as she stood before a closet full of parkas, backpacks, helmets and other expedition gear. "I would argue that you, class of 2020, are coming away with more of that than any class before."

Before Levine's address, Commencement viewers heard from university President Robert C. Robbins, Dean of Students Kendal Washington White, Provost Liesl Folks, college deans, this year's senior award winners and other speakers. The clips were filmed at various locations in recent weeks, with participants following physical distancing guidelines.

Robbins, in his opening remarks, addressed graduates from Arizona Stadium, where Commencement is usually held.

"The new format of celebration this year is out of necessity, and we know that it's not traditional; however, commitment to celebrating your achievement is as robust as ever," he said.

"You have reached a milestone in your lives by earning your degrees, and now, we are all excited to see the impact you will make on our world," he said.

Levine, in her address, likened the circumstances surrounding this year's Commencement to the challenge she faced when she led the first American Women's Everest Expedition in 2002. A storm turned the team back just 300 feet from the summit.

"I can absolutely relate to what it feels like to lose an opportunity that you worked so hard for," she said.

"Everything I learned during that failed attempt on Everest prepared me for life's challenges going forward including a successful Everest climb that would come eight years later," she said.

She urged graduates to embrace and brave their fears but to not be complacent. She also assured them that changing direction like retreating back to base camp on Everest is never something to be ashamed of.

"Backing up is not the same as backing down," she said.

She reminded graduates that their summit graduation is not the end, but a time to reflect on lessons from college and how those lessons will guide them through their professional lives.

"Reaching the top of a mountain is not nearly as important as the lessons you learn along the way when you're fighting with everything you've got in you to get up there and what you're going to do with that information to be better going forward," Levine said. "It's that fight during the journey that benefits us the most, because that struggle makes us stronger."

Despite the shared challenge for the class 2020, nothing can take away from the shared accomplishment of graduation, Levine said, adding that the class has "raised the bar" with its perseverance in uncertain times.

"You are resilient, you are creative, you have learned to sacrifice, to pivot and to keep going when you thought you couldn't," Levine said.

"You are the fiercest Wildcat class ever."

Levine, a New York Times bestselling author, speaker and businesswoman, graduated from UArizona in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in communication. She has climbed the highest peak on every continent and has skied to both the North and South poles a feat known as the Adventure Grand Slam, which only 20 people in the world have achieved. In 2016, she completed first ascents or the first successful documented climbs to the top of Hall Peak in Antarctica and Khang Karpo in Nepal.

Levine is one of five honorees to receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree this year. The other recipients are Bruce and Patricia Bartlett, benefactors and champions of the university's Strategic Alternative Learning Techniques Center; Melody S. Robidoux, a businesswoman, philanthropist and UArizona alumna who co-founded the Women's Foundation of Southern Arizona; and Linda Ronstadt, a 10-time Grammy Award-winning singer, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and Tucson native.

Seven graduating seniors also were recognized for their outstanding achievements and contributions during the ceremony. The Provost Award went to Lauren Easter (law and philosophy); the Robie Gold Medal went to Tony Viola IV (literacy, learning and leadership); the Robert Logan Nugent Awards went to Lily Keane Chavez (creative writing and global studies) and Meucci Watchman Ilunga (biochemistry); and the Merrill P. Freeman Medals went to Marcos Gomez Ambriz (physiology and biochemistry) and Ahmad B. Shahin (physiology).

The virtual ceremony will be available to watch in full on the Commencement website on Monday. The class of 2020 will be celebrated with an in-person ceremony during Homecoming Weekend on Oct. 30.

Collaboration paves the way for highly cited titles in biochemistry and molecular biology to transition to gold open access

NEW YORK, May 12, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB)andElsevier, a global information analytics business specializing in science and health, are delighted to announce a new partnership to publish the ASBMB's Journal of Biological Chemistry (JBC), Molecular & Cellular Proteomics (MCP) and Journal of Lipid Research (JLR). As part of this agreement, all three titles will move to a gold open access (OA) publishing model, making articles immediately and permanently available for everyone to read, download, copy and distribute. The journals will be hosted on Elsevier's leading online platform, ScienceDirect, beginning January 1, 2021.

Impossible Foods CEO on finding meat’s magical ingredient, pitching VCs and convincing meat-loving chefs to serve a vegan burger – CNBC

In 2011, at the age of 57, Stanford biochemistry professor Pat Brown took a leap faith and quit his job to launch plant-based "meat" company Impossible Foods. He did it because wanted to help solve one of the world's biggest problems before he retired.

"The use of animals as a technology in food production is, by a huge margin, the most destructive technology on earth in the history of our species," Brown tells CNBC Make It.

Today, Impossible Foods, best known for its juicy, meat-tasting vegan burger, is valued at more than $4 billion. Its burgers are served in more than 17,000 restaurants worldwide, including via partnership deals withBurger King, White Castle and Starbucks. It's also sold in8,000 grocery stores,

Here, Brown talks withCNBC Make It about his life before Impossible Foods, his first investor pitch meeting and where he sees the brand going. The interview has been edited together for length and clarity.

CNBC Make It: Today, you are the founder of Impossible Foods. But talk to me about life before Impossible Foods.

Pat Brown: I grew up assuming that I ever did about 50% of my childhood was in the Washington, D.C. suburbs and the other 50% was split in Paris [France] and in Taipei [Taiwan]. And I wasn't a very good student. I was capable, but I had very little interest in school. Fortunately, when it was time for me to go to college [in the 1980s], it was a time when the fraction of people who tried to go to college was a lot lower. So I was able to get into the University of Chicago, which is where I went for undergrad and then I stayed there for my M.D. and Ph.D. [in biochemistry].

I wanted to have more of tangible impact on the world ... so I decided to go into biomedical research. And then I did a pediatrics residency, so I spent three years as a pediatrician in Chicago, at Children's Memorial Hospital. I'd have a 36-hour non-stop day. But I loved it because you felt every moment like you were helping people.

Let's move forward to 2009. You were 57 and a professor at Stanford Medicine, Stanford University's medical school, and you took a sabbatical. How did that lead to the creation of Impossible Foods?

I used the [sabbatical] to try to figure out, what's the most important problem in the world is that I might be able to contribute to solving? The use of animals as a technology in food production is, by a huge margin, the most destructive technology on Earth in the history of our species. And once I realized that, it was a no-brainer.

Relatively quickly it became clear that you are not going to solve the [meat consumption] problem by regulation, education or trying to persuade people. Even most environmentalists that go to climate and environmental conferences are eating steak for dinner. They're not going to stop eating foods that are a big source of pleasure in their daily lives.

So that meant that the only way to solve the problem is to understand what consumers love about these foods and do a better job of delivering it than the current industry does. That means competing in the marketplace and pulling the economic rug out from under that industry. I had to start a company to make those changes and that's why I founded Impossible Foods.

What was your first pitch to get funding for Impossible Foods like?

You can't walk a block in Palo Alto [California, where Stanford is located] without tripping over a venture capitalist. I went to talk to three of the big VC firms but I was naive about what drives venture investors. It's not the same thing that drives me, it turns out.

The message that really snapped them to attention is that the there was, at that time, a $1.5 trillion global market being served by a technology [meat production] that has fundamentally not been improved since prehistoric times. And it's just waiting to be taken down by better technology.

But that was kind of like my last [pitch deck] slide. Now, I am much more upfront about this, saying that is a humongous prize for whoever can develop the technology to replace animals in the food system.

How did you create the Impossible Burger?

The premise was this is a scientific problem. We needed to understand in molecular detail how meat works.

From a nutritional standpoint, the problem was already solved [by plant-based] protein. Just to put it in perspective, the global soybean crop occupies .8% of Earth's land area and produces 150% as much protein as in all the meat consumed globally. And it uses way less fertilizer, pesticides and water than the animal agriculture industry. And it's cheaper by far.

The unsolved problem is deliciousness. So we had to study: What makes meat delicious?

We hired molecular biologists, biochemist, biophysicist and basic scientists because the the problem was not making food. It was understanding how this particular food works to create those emergent properties that people crave. So, they got started working on understanding what makes meat delicious.

And how did you find the magic ingredient, heme?

When you cook meat some kind of magical happens there's an explosion of aroma and it's flavor profile becomes completely different. When you have an explosion of chemical activity like that, to me that suggests that there was a catalyst in there.

What I knew was that heme besides being the molecule that carries oxygen in your blood making it red is one of the best catalysts in nature. And it's staring right at you, because it's responsible for the red or pink color of meat. So, it's just screamingly obvious.

You can basically take vegetable broth but if you throw in heme, it tastes like meat.

When you first introduced Impossible Burger, why did you market it to restaurants as opposed to consumers?

We debuted it with a handful of world renowned, uncompromising chefs, the first of which was Dave Chang, who once made a big splash by banning on principle every vegetarian item from his menu. So this guy is a meat guy to the bone, and the perfect person for us to launch with. Someone like Dave Chang, Traci Des Jardins, Brad Farmer and Chris Cosentino, these very meat-focused chefs, wanted it on their menus. So you would be insane not to take advantage of that.

Where do you see Impossible Foods going?

I think last year we increased our sales by about threefold. This year, it's very likely to be more than twofold. In order to achieve our mission[to eliminate the need to make food from animals], we have to grow on average about twofold every year for the next 15 years.

More than 90% of the people who ever want impossible burger are current meat eaters. We need to convince them to try [Impossible Burger]. Once we do that, I think we're in.
