The Road to a COVID-19 Vaccine and Treatment: a Biochemistry Student Explains – The Whit Online

In just five months, a nonliving particle one hundredth the diameter of a human hair has claimed the lives of more U.S. citizens than the Vietnam and Korean wars combined. This particle is, of course, the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19. Can scientists and medical professionals find a way to stop it before it reaps further destruction?

With the ability to switch from a nonliving to a living state after hijacking a host cells replication machinery, viruses are intricate rogue proteins that occupy a mysterious realm between biochemistry and quantum mechanics. You cannot kill viruses as they are not even alive in the first place, and the field of biochemistry is currently not advanced enough to annihilate all of these sub-microscopic parasites outright without harming you, too. However, viruses utilize a variety of chemicals to accomplish their replication cycles, and it is these specific chemicals that are vulnerable to attack.

Possible treatments for viruses are classified into one of two groups: drugs that inhibit viral replication and drugs that modify your immune response.

To understand how antiviral drugs work, you must know the substances involved in viral replication. COVID-19, aka SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory system coronavirus 2), is a single-stranded RNA virus that enters your cells by binding to a specific receptor on their surfaces, triggering endocytosis (cell entry). The virus reverse transcribes its RNA into double-stranded DNA, the blueprint for protein synthesis, using an enzyme called RNA polymerase. This enzyme lacks a proofreading function, so the resulting DNA code will mutate over time. When COVID-19s completed DNA is integrated into your cells genome, your cell exhausts its own resources manufacturing more viruses.

The viruses escape and infect other cells, eventually killing them.

Remdesivir is the most promising antiviral drug to date, and is the only one authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for emergency use. Its molecular structure mimics that of adenine, a nucleic acid in DNA. When the viruses RNA polymerase mistakenly adds a Remdesivir molecule in place of adenine, the reverse transcription process is stopped. The drugs developer, Gilead, applied for FDA approval Aug. 10 for regular use after presenting preliminary evidence proving the drugs effectiveness. Remdesivir is not a cure for COVID-19; according to the study, treatment only reduces the recovery time of infected patients and does not protect against death. FDA approval is currently pending.

Why prioritize usage of drugs when you could just prevent people from contracting COVID-19 in the first place?

This is where drugs that modify your immune response vaccines come into play. Vaccination is the best way to drastically reduce COVID-19 transmission and to grant immunity to the general public. Antibodies are protective proteins naturally synthesized by your body whenever antigens (foreign substances) invade it. By introducing a weakened form of the virus or a portion of the viruses protein structure into your body, vaccines train your immune system to manufacture its own antibodies in a phenomenon known as active immunity. When you are infected with the actual virus, your immune system swiftly identifies the pathogens protein pattern, induces apoptosis (cell death) in all affected cells, and stops viral spread in its tracks.

Unfortunately, vaccine development is a long and arduous process often riddled with complications, and rushing the development process can sacrifice drug effectiveness and even trigger dangerous immune reactions in patients. To be deemed safe and effective, immunological response data from thousands of testing subjects from specific populations (especially those with underlying health issues and senior citizens) must be compiled and analyzed. This procedure alone can take months or even years. After a vaccine is considered safe and effective, there is the additional hurdle of manufacturing and distributing the vaccine to the entire population.

The rate of vaccine development is progressing at historically fast speeds. According to Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, the first COVID-19 vaccine was developed for testing just six weeks after the viral sequence was decoded. In comparison, the vaccine for Influenza another RNA virus infecting the respiratory system took 20 years to be developed and 26 years to be approved. In fact, by the time regular citizens were inoculated with this flu vaccine, it was ineffective because the virus had mutated by then.

The most promising SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, Moderna, entered its final phase of testing among 30,000 patients on July 27. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has predicted that researchers will be able to determine Modernas effectiveness by November or December this year, perhaps sooner. The vaccine does its job by transmitting mRNA (messenger RNA) molecules transcribed from DNA to your cells genomes, which causes them to assemble portions of COVID-19 proteins. By introducing these inactive foreign proteins into your body, the vaccine compels your immune system to manufacture antibodies that will identify and eliminate the actual virus. The introduction of a vaccine to the American public would finally allow our country to regain some semblance of normalcy.

The way each person responds to SARS-CoV-2 infection depends on individual genetics, age and pre-existing health conditions. Some patients are not even aware of infection, while others exhibit life-threatening symptoms. COVID-19 enters cells by binding a receptor called the angiotensin enzyme converting 2 (ACE2) receptor. Angiotensin 2 is a powerful enzyme that causes your blood pressure levels to skyrocket and is implicated in inflammation in a way that is still not fully understood. For some, SARS-CoV-2 wreaks havoc on the cardiovascular system, which then damages vascularized organs requiring a constant blood supply. Despite having a 3-4% mortality rate, evidence suggests that COVID-19 is capable of inflicting lasting damage on highly vascularized organs including the lungs and brain.

Scientific advancement is not based on a couple of scientific studies or published papers. Instead, it is founded upon decades of research. Medical professionals, scientists and governments across the globe are engaged in a race unlike any other in history to develop a safe and effective vaccine, and we have learned about COVID-19 faster than any infectious disease in history.

Unanswered questions, however maddening they may be, are powerful catalysts for scientific advancement. As we expand the breadth and depth of our knowledge, not only will we have more answers, but we will have a better understanding of the right questions to ask. To quote Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Phrasing the right question is much harder than finding the right answer.

Ultimately, it is questions not answers that are the driving force behind the growth of humanitys collective intelligence and the development of a successful vaccine.

Ruby Ahaiwe ’21 Focuses Her Public Health Interest on Her Community – Bowdoin News

Before the pandemic, Ahaiwe was also planning a "huge walk for health," as she describes it, in which local people and health care providers walked from the hospital to the local government center to demand more resources for rural health care.

After it became clear that COVID-19 would make it impossible to fly to Nigeria, Ahaiwe established community liaisonsincluding friends and relativeswho could start to educate local people about the importance of taking advantage of local clinics.

"There is a heavy dependency on traditional medicine," Ahaiwe said, "which can work, but people should understand they have a wide range of options for medical care."

Her community partners have been putting up posters Ahaiwe has designed and printed that contain medical advice, such as the importance of handwashing.

The hospital also recently organized a COVID-19 awareness walk to educate community members about the seriousness of the virus. Ahaiwe donated part of her grant to buy face masks and pocket sanitizers to hand out to townspeople.

Working from afar this summer has been successful. But Ahaiwe is a bit worried about how well the community will receive her when she eventually does return to Nigeria. Though her family is from the village, they left the area when she was a child. "Some people might say, 'Who is this young girl telling us how to run our health?'"

To foster community buy-in to her health-outreach projects, Ahaiwe has contacted community leaders, including the local king."Hesaid it was good for the community that young people are coming back to invest in the community and that he would offer whatever support I need,"Ahaiwe said.

Her public health project is the kind of work Ahaiwe wants to dedicate her lifework to. At Bowdoin, she is majoring in biochemistry and minoring in Francophone studies. After college, she plans to earn a master's degree in public health to work in the area of preventative health care, "especially in places with disparities," she said. She would love to be based in Nigeria or somewhere else in Africa, she added.

"This is my focus," she said. "I am passionate about it."

MOSCOW - Christopher Nomura will become the University of Idahos vice president of research and economic development on October 1, 2020.

Nomura is vice president for research and a biochemistry professor at State University of New Yorks (SUNY) College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

It is a privilege and honor to be selected as the next vice president for research at the University of Idaho, one of the premier research institutions in the nation. I am so excited to work with President Green and the University of Idaho community to build on the strong foundation already in place and elevate research to new heights, Nomura said.

Nomura replaces Janet Nelson, who served in the position since 2016. Brad Ritts, U of Is associate vice president for research and Department of Geological Sciences faculty member, has been serving as interim vice president of research and economic development since February.

Nomura earned a bachelors degree in biology from University of California at Santa Cruz and his doctoral degree in biochemistry, microbiology and molecular biology at Pennsylvania State University. An internationally recognized scientist/administrator, Nomura has more than 85 publications in top journals in his field and serves on several editorial boards.

In his current position, Nomura oversees McIntire-Stennis funding coming to SUNY that is designed to increase forestry research and train future forestry scientists.

Christopher Nomura has extensive experience fostering industry collaborations and working with both national and international research funding agencies, U of I President Scott Green said. His talent and energy will be valuable additions as the University of Idaho continues to grow our research enterprise in service to the state of Idaho.

We are seeking a post-doctoral research associate to join the laboratory of Dr Mick Urbaniak in the Division of Biomedical and Life Sciences at Lancaster University, UK. This BBSRC funded project will investigate the mechanisms by which African trypanosomes sense and respond to iron availability in the mammalian host using a combination of genetic and proteomic techniques.

Lancaster University has a world-class reputation as a centre for excellence in teaching and research. The Division of Biomedical and Life Sciences, within the Faculty of Health and Medicine, is a rapidly growing, innovative and vibrant Division whose research effort is directed towards understanding basic cellular and physiological mechanisms that underpin disease states. Our lab investigates how trypanosomes use post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression to respond to changes in their environment, such as iron availability (see Benz et al (2018), DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0206332). You will be joining a small, dedicated team in a well-equipped laboratory space with facilities including Biohazard Category 2 and 3 laboratories.

Candidates are required to have a PhD in Biochemistry or a related subject, and a strong background in either trypanosome cell biology or quantitative proteomics. Experience of molecular biology, cell culture techniques, and the analysis and interpretation of data is essential. Experience of working with African trypanosomes, RNA and proteomic techniques would be an advantage, although training will be given.

The Division of Biomedical and Life Sciences is a friendly research environment that strongly supports the individual needs of each employee and which actively promotes a healthy work-life balance. Missouri S&T professor elected fellow of American Institute of Chemical Engineers – The Rolla Daily News

Dr. Christi Patton Luks, teaching professor of chemical and biochemical engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has been elected as a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) in recognition of her contributions to the chemical engineering field.

Dr. Christi Patton Luks, teaching professor of chemical and biochemical engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has been elected as a fellow of theAmerican Institute of Chemical Engineers(AIChE) in recognition of her contributions to the chemical engineering field.

A fellowship is the highest grade of membership in AIChE.

Dr. Luks is widely known for her contributions not only to chemical engineering, but also to Missouri S&T, both in the classroom and as acting department chair, says Dr. Richard Wlezien, vice provost and dean of the College of Engineering and Computing. Being elected a fellow is a tremendous honor, and one that Dr. Luks richly deserves.

Luks has been a member of AIChE for several years. Her first leadership role in the organization was chairing the Womens Initiative Committee (WIC) in 2006. That role propelled her to join the Societal Impact Operating Council (SIOC), which she chaired in 2011, and to participate in multiple activities with the K-12 Committee and the Global Societal Impact Committee (GSIC).

Luks has been active in the AIChE education division and on the student chapters committee. She has served as judge for the minority affairs committee scholarship awards and several competitions: student design, student paper, regional Chem-E-Car Safety and Engineering 4 Good.

I am proud of the fact that I was selected for this honor despite my nontraditional academic career path, says Luks. I was never interested in the traditional tenure-track to tenure career. By pursuing a non-tenure-track teaching career, I have been able to tailor my work to the activities I love. It is fabulous to be recognized by my technical colleagues.

Luks earned a bachelors degree in chemical engineering from Texas A&M and a masters degree in applied math from the University of Tulsa, where she also earned a doctorate degree in chemical engineering. She worked briefly in industry before pursuing an academic career. Luks joined the faculty at Missouri S&T in 2014. Currently, she serves on the board of directors of the American Society for Engineering Education and is the national president of Omega Chi Epsilon, the chemical engineering honor society.

Whitworth grad takes passion for community service from Zimbabwe to Washington, D.C. – The Spokesman-Review

Growing up in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, Nadia Sarfraz spent much of her time volunteering at schools, orphanages and retirement homes.

In particular, she remembers leading a group of students who collected donations and wrapped Christmas gifts for children who had little to look forward to on the holiday.

I come from a very collectivist culture where we all get through things together, we work together, I serve my community, Sarfraz said. My entire life, I was raised around the idea of service.

Sarfraz took that passion for community service to Spokane four years ago when she started her undergraduate career at Whitworth University. The 22-year-old recently graduated from Whitworth after a semester disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Her accomplishments are many and varied.

Sarfraz majored in biochemistry, and yet she found time to work extensively at Whitworths Dornsife Center for Community Engagement. She managed a mentorship program called RISE that connects Whitworth students with kids at local K-12 schools.

Working with local nonprofits and attending city council meetings, Sarfraz has advocated for a wide range of causes, including mental health outreach, affordable housing, food security, cultural heritage preservation and animal rescue.

Sarfraz enjoys getting others involved, too. In the United States, she said shes noticed many people being really compassionate, but then not knowing how to funnel their compassion into service.

Last year, through Whitworths honors program, Sarfraz spent the fall semester in Washington, D.C., as an intern at two Smithsonian Institution museums.

At the National Museum of American History, she helped create teaching tools for people with vision and hearing disabilities objects they could touch and hold to get a tactile experience as they toured exhibits. Those included objects made with a 3D printer and strips of fabric that mimicked the feel of dresses worn by the nations first ladies.

At the National Museum of Air and Space, Sarfraz researched the ethics of spaceflight and, in particular, a condition known as spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome. Basically, she explained, astronauts lose eyesight as they travel farther into space a problem with great implications for any future attempt at a Mars landing.

Among many other awards, Sarfraz recently won a Governors Student Civic Leader Award from Washington Campus Compact, a coalition of colleges and universities in the state. She was one of three students in Washington to win the award, which comes with a $1,000 stipend.

Sarfraz already has moved back to D.C., where she plans to pursue a doctorate in biochemistry followed by a law degree at Georgetown University, starting this fall. In her spare time, she hopes to get involved in yet another area of volunteer work: advocating for prisoners on death row.

A lot has changed in Zimbabwe since Sarfraz moved away, including a military coup that ousted strongman president Robert Mugabe, who led the country for nearly four decades.

Sarfraz has visited home a few times and considered moving back to Harare, where her parents are doctors, but now says she will let her career and passion lead her to her next destination.

For the longest time, I thought I wanted to be a doctor like my parents, and go back and work with the nonprofit clinics that we have there, Sarfraz said. But then, she said, she began noticing laws and policies that have inhibited a lot of the people that I care about doctors and patients from actually accessing the help that they need in so many different ways.

She looks forward to knocking down some of those barriers.

Nine Members of Men’s Volleyball Named to CVC All-Academic Team – Southern Virginia University News

BUENA VISTA, Va. The Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) today announced the CVC All-Academic Team for the 2019-2020 academic year with nine members of the Southern Virginia University men's volleyball team earning honors.

The nine Knights set a program-record, surpassing the seven players who received the recognition last season.

A total of 72 players from the Continental Volleyball Conference have earned CVC Academic All-Conference honors for 2020. Juniata College led the way with 12 representatives while all ten member schools had at least three players receive the award.

Players are nominated by their head coaches and must carry a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3 for the academic year.
