Clinical Utility of the Logarithmically Transformed Ratio of Triglycerides-to- High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol and Its Relationship with Other…

Elevated triglyceride (TG) levels and reduced high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-c) levels indicate lipid abnormalities, but their levels alone do not reflect the actual status of plasma atherogenicity and cardiovascular disease risk (CVD). TG and HDL-c levels directly affect the balance between plasma atherogenic and antiatherogenic factors, as well as values of the atherogenic index of plasma [AIP (logarithmically transformed ratio of TG-to-HDL-c)]. The aim of this study was to evaluate the AIP risk categories (an indicator of plasma atherogenicity) and the relationships of AIP with other atherosclerosis-related lipid parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and their potential clinical utility. Standard lipid profile, AIP, and lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH) were investigated in 124 T2DM outpatients (mean age 52.75.9 years) and 61 healthy subjects (mean age 50.96.8 years). T2DM patients were subclassified according to the AIP risk category and glycemic control. Higher levels of AIP, LOOH, and TG and lower HDL-c (all <0.0001) were observed in T2DM patients than in the control group. AIP positively correlated with LOOH, non-HDL-c, and the non-HDL/HDL ratio (all <0.0001). The TG level was strongly correlated with the LOOH level among T2DM patients (<0.0001). The close association of AIP with other atherosclerosis-related lipid factors reveals an increased plasma atherogenicity. AIP risk categories indicate the actual status of plasma atherogenicity and identify subjects who are at an increased atherogenic risk and the development of CVD. In this respect, AIP has a promising future in routine clinical practice.

Rutgers Awarded $5 Million Grant from NIH to Improve Access to COVID-19 Testing within Underserved and Vulnerable Communities – Rutgers Today

The award is part of the RADx Underserved Populations (RADx-UP) program in the Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADx) initiative

The New Jersey Alliance for Clinical and Translational Science (NJ ACTS) at Rutgers University received a $5 million National Institutes of Health grant to launch outreach campaigns and expand access to COVID-19 testing for underserved and vulnerable communities in New Jersey.

The grant will fund a Rutgers-led study called the New Jersey Healthcare Essential WoRker Outreach and Education Study - Testing Overlooked Occupations, or NJ HEROES TOO, under the NIHs Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADx) initiative, RADx Underserved Populations (RADx-UP) program. The program supports research that aims to better understand COVID-19 testing patterns among underserved and vulnerable populations; strengthen the data on disparities in infection rates, disease progression and outcomes; and develop strategies to reduce the disparities in COVID-19 testing.

NJ HEROES TOO focuses on the Black and Latinx communities disproportionately affected by COVID-19 in places where Rutgers academic medical centers are deeply rooted. NJ ACTS partnered with community and health care organizations in Essex, Middlesex, Passaic and Union counties to co-design this study.

Medical sociologist and lead principal investigator for the study, Shawna Hudson, who is also co-director of Community Engagement forNJ ACTS, reflected that much of the public attention with frontline health care heroes has been focused on doctors and nurses. NJ HEROES TOO focuses on vulnerable health care workers and their families, including home health and personal care aides, maintenance staff, housekeeping, and hospital security, groups which are largely Black and Latinx and have concerns about exposing their families, friends and communities.

This is an incredible opportunity to improve COVID-19 awareness in vulnerable individuals across NJ. Its a game changer, said Reynold Panettieri, director of NJ ACTS.

Rutgers is one of 32 institutions that received an NIH award through the RADx-UP program to support projects designed to rapidly implement COVID-19 testing strategies in populations disproportionately affected by the pandemic. These groups include African Americans, American Indians/Alaskan Natives, Latinos/Latinas, Native Hawaiians, older adults, pregnant women, and those who are homeless or incarcerated.

It is critical that all Americans have access to rapid, accurate diagnostics for COVID-19, especially underserved and vulnerable populations who are bearing the brunt of this disease, said NIH director Francis S. Collins. The RADx-UP program will help us better understand and alleviate the barriers to testing for those most vulnerable and reduce the burden of this disease.

Rutgers researchers are also working with community organizations to understand the best way of communicating the importance of being tested and facilitating COVID-19 at-home saliva self-testing.

We need to recognize the disparities for Black and Latinx communities. To help address inequities, it is critical that we use an on-the-ground approach by partnering with community members whom they know and trust. We need to ensure that the people and families who need testing and treatment are detected earlier and get help earlier, added Manny Jimnez,a study principal investigator and director of developmental and behavioral pediatrics education at the Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

NJ HEROES TOO will be developed in two phases. The first phase includes an evaluation process involving stakeholder interviews, evidence-based content review, pilot testing, and stakeholder input to inform design and implementation of outreach strategies. The second phase will examine the impact of the studys outreach strategies on health care workers, their family members and the broader community.

The study brings together researchers, health care and community partners in a collaborative effort, and is led by the following six principal investigators:

Health care and community organizations participating include: Parker Health Group; Visiting Nurse Association Health Group; ASPIRA Association; Central Jersey Family Health Consortium, Inc.; East Orange Senior Volunteer Corporation; Health Coalition of Passaic County; Mobile Family Success Center; New Brunswick Area Branch NAACP; New Brunswick Tomorrow; New Hope NOW Community Development Corporation; Partnership for Maternal and Child Health of Northern New Jersey; Program for Parents; Puerto Rican Action Board (PRAB); The Bridge; Township of Hillside Senior Recreation Center; United Way of Greater Union County; and Urban League of Union County.

McMaster makeup artist wants you to feel beautiful The Silhouette – The Silhouette

Fourth-year student Abi Oladesu is beautifying clients through her business Desu Beauty

Abi Oladesu has been doing makeup for most of her life. She started having fun with her mothers makeup from the age of 10 and decided a few years later to challenge herself to increase her skills. She did someone elses makeup for the first time when she was about 16.

During her second year at McMaster University, the biochemistry student started thinking about taking makeup more seriously. However, it wasnt until she was quarantining during the COVID-19 pandemic that she decided to take the leap and start her business, Desu Beauty on Oct. 30, 2020.

There are three components to Oladesus business. As she has received many requests for makeup tutorials and enjoys teaching, she decided that she would post makeup tutorials on Instagram and offer beginner and intermediate lessons.

The second part of her business involves posting her own makeup looks in order to improve her skills and show clients what she can do. Lastly, she does makeup for clients weddings, photoshoots, proms, graduations and other events.

It is important to Oladesu that when she does clients makeup, she isnt turning them into a different person but highlighting the best parts of them. This goal stems in part from her own experience with makeup. When Oladesu was a preteen and early teenager, she used makeup as a way of hiding her face. Now she uses makeup to accentuate her features and seeks to do the same for her clients.

Obviously nobody wants that for themselves, but I dont think theres anything necessarily bad about [being self-conscious] in the sense that we all feel self-conscious once in a while. Were in a society where the beauty standards are very high and they change all the time, but its important to remember . . . youre the one that at the end of the day determines your worth to other people, said Oladesu.

Were in a society where the beauty standards are very high and they change all the time, but its important to remember . . . youre the one that at the end of the day determines your worth to other people, said Oladesu.

This mission is embedded in the name of Oladesus business. While she originally called it Desu Beauty as a reference to the last four letters of her last name, she realized upon reflection that it had a deeper meaning for her.

Im a very large fan of anime and so desu . . . basically means to be . . . I am [also] Christian [and] in the Bible, its like we are beautifully and wonderfully made . . . So to be that beautifully and wonderfully creative person, you have to love yourself in every aspect, whether thats with wearing your natural face out and being super proud of it or getting the skills to do your makeup really well so that every time you look in the mirror . . . youre like, wow, I feel beautiful, I know Im beautiful. . . . I want you to be the best version of yourself or at least to look at yourself and be like wow, I feel like that beautifully and wonderfully made person, explained Oladesu.

Since she started, Oladesu has received positive reception and a lot of support from family and friends. Unfortunately, the ongoing pandemic has decreased the number of events for which people would get their makeup done. At the same time, Oladesu credits the pandemic with giving her the time to start her business.

Oladesu also sees online classes as a blessing for her since she started her business. Instead of spending all day on campus and then doing makeup appointments, she can better make her own schedule by doing makeup during the day and watching recorded lectures afterwards. Managing the business alongside her demanding degree and other commitments has also encouraged her to better prioritize her time.

Oladesu looks forward to continuing to grow her following and reach more people through her business. As she will be graduating soon, she is considering how she might integrate her love of makeup into her career.

Im definitely a cautious person so . . . right now, I definitely am going to finish my biochemistry degree and Im going to see if I could get a job with that. But working with makeup has gotten me interested in cosmetics in general so [maybe] I can mix my biochemistry major with cosmetics and then possibly go into formulation or something along those lines, said Oladesu.

I definitely am going to finish my biochemistry degree and Im going to see if I could get a job with that. But working with makeup has gotten me interested in cosmetics in general.

To other students with a skill they are considering turning into a business, Oladesu says to just start. She recalls that she felt the need to have high-quality foundations in every colour before she began her business. However, since she started, all her clients have used colours that she had already had.

Theres nothing wrong with humble beginnings. You dont have to have everything, you dont have to have the best of everything, Oladesu said. Its better to just start because honestly, I feel like people appreciate watching you grow and watching you improve.

Predicting the path of COVID-19 from Wuhan to Buffalo – University at Buffalo Reporter

Jennifer Surtees is a biochemist at UB. For more than two decades, her research has focused on genome stability and how mutations threaten that stability and sometimes lead to cancer.

But when the COVID-19 pandemic caused the temporary shutdown of UB research laboratories last March, Surtees, like many of her colleagues, couldnt help but consider how her expertise might be applied to the novel coronavirus.

When the pandemic started, there was a huge surge of interest research-wise into the pandemic and trying to understand how the virus moved around, says Surtees, associate professor of biochemistry in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at UB and director of UBs Genome, Environment and Microbiome Community of Excellence.

I had watched the early genome sequencing coming out of Seattle and California, and I thought we could totally do this here, she says.

Surtees contacted UBs Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development to ask if anyone at UB was doing genome sequencing of the SARS-COV2 virus isolated from Western New York patients. No one was.

So she contacted Teresa Quattrin, senior associate dean for research integration in the Jacobs School and Special Populations Core director in the Clinical and Translational Science Institute; Gale Burstein, Erie County health commissioner and a Jacobs School faculty member; and Carleen Pope, administrative coordinator of the Erie County Public Health Laboratory. All were enthusiastic about Surtees idea.

Its an interesting epidemiological question to get a sense of where the virus is circulating in our community, Surtees says. Are there versions that are more pathogenic or infectious? I wanted to see what we could learn about the accumulation of mutations in Western New York patients.

Surtees explains that rapid genomic sequencing could be used alongside contact tracing to understand transmission of the virus through communities, with the goal of understanding how mutations affect clinical outcomes.

The goal with this project is to get a sense of the evolution of the virus, and where it came from, to find out its genomic epidemiology, to try and understand the biology of this virus, she says.

To do that, she worked with researchers in the sequencing core headed by Norma J. Nowak, executive director of UBs New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences. Donald Yergeau, associate director of genomic technologies in the Genomics and Bioinformatics Core, established a wet lab pipeline to convert the viral (SARS-CoV-2) RNA genomes derived from patients to DNA through reverse-transcription. The DNA version of the entire genome for each sample was amplified in small fragments and subjected to next-generation sequencing.

Jonathan Bard, a senior bioinformatician, then established a bioinformatics pipeline to compare the sequenced Erie County genomes with the reference genome, the original virus that circulated in Wuhan, China, to identify any changes or mutations in the genome. These genome sequences were uploaded into the nextstrain.org platform to assess phylogeny, a kind of family tree for the viral strains in Erie County, Surtees explains. This predicts the path the virus may have taken to get from Wuhan to Buffalo.

By July, Surtees had received Institutional Review Board approval to study the first batch of 50 deidentified (anonymous) samples isolated from nasal swabs from Western New York patients with COVID-19. They retrieved reliable sequence data from 32 of the samples. Now that that pipeline is in place, Surtees and her team can crank through new samples much more quickly.

Over time, mutations accumulate; thats just life, Surtees says, It happens in all organisms that replicate their genomes. Studying mutations provides us with an evolutionary path. It tells us which genomes are more closely related, the same way we can tell how closely people are related by looking at changes in their DNA sequences. The more mutations that two genomes have in common, the more closely related they are. Genomic sequencing also allows us to see how quickly the virus is mutating.

The question is to find out how mutations may affect infectivity of the virus, to find out which, if any, mutations are functional and which are just being carried along, she continues.

In the first batch of samples from patients who were sick with COVID-19 in early April, the majority, approximately two thirds, of virus samples from Western New Yorkers seemed to be of European origin, primarily Italy, France and Spain. The remaining third appears to have come through China and Singapore.

Surtees says the data from the samples will prove more valuable if it is possible to gather more information, such as gender, age and travel history, from the patients from whom the samples were taken. Since the samples were deidentified, that will require permission from Erie County and from each individual patient, as well as approval by UBs IRB.

Recently, the UB researchers received another 200 samples from the Erie County Public Health Laboratory, which they are running through the pipeline as well.

Surtees has received a small grant from the SUNY Research Foundation to pursue this work, as well as some funding from UBs Genome, Environment and Microbiome Community of Excellence.

She also has begun collaborating on the COVID-19 research with Amy Jacobs, a virologist and research associate professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology in the Jacobs School, and with Omer Gokcumen, an evolutionary biologist and associate professor of biological sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences.

They have applied for external funding from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease of the National Institutes of Health.

M&C Saatchi co-founders: “From the outside it was theirs, but really it was ours” – CampaignLive

Yeah, that was good. Yeah, Id do that again. When you click through it click, click, click, click I find it quite exciting. Sorry to be immodest about it.

Jeremy Sinclair is talking Campaign through a slideshow of 25 of his favourite ads that he and his business partners, Bill Muirhead and David Kershaw, have picked from the last half-century of working first for Saatchi & Saatchi and then M&C Saatchi.

It is an awesome display: Pregnant man, which encouraged family planning; Labour isnt working, which helped Margaret Thatcher get elected; The fat lady sings for Silk Cut, which marked the end of cigarette advertising. Then theres New Labour, new danger with Tony Blairs demon eyes. Another Conservative election poster of Ed Miliband in Alex Salmonds pocket. And, to make it topical, one of the latest campaigns Looks like you need Iceland to promote tourism by getting people to scream into the internet.

There is a current running through those ads of high impact, in your face, simple, hopefully world-changing or market-changing, Kershaw says, sitting alongside Muirhead and Sinclair on a Zoom call. Theres no doubt, when you see those ads, you see Saatchi.

Sinclair, Muirhead and Kershaw should know. In the case of Sinclair, the creative, he has been there since before day one, 50 years ago, when Charles Saatchi and his brother Maurice announced the launch of Saatchi & Saatchi in Campaign on 11 September 1970.

Muirhead and Kershaw, the two account men, joined in 1972 and 1982 the glory days when Saatchi & Saatchi was known as the biggest and the best in the world, before the brothers over-extended themselves and lost control. The five of them went on to set up a breakaway agency, M&C Saatchi, in 1995 and became equal partners.

Charles was barely involved as he focused on his art collection but Maurice stayed, albeit in an increasingly semi-detached way, until December 2019. Thats when he sensationally quit, along with all of the non-executive directors, in a row over 11.6m of accounting irregularities and adjustments, and its stock market value crashed 80% to about 70m.

And now there are just three: Sinclair, 73, earnest and passionate; Muirhead, 74, debonair with Australian charm; and Kershaw, 66, a jolly, clubbable Arsenal fan.

The trio remain loyal to the original Saatchi ethos what Kershaw describes as an outrageous desire to change the world, to do things dramatically with no pussy-footing but the last year has been tough.

The accounting problems first came to light in August 2019 and, more than 12 months later, the 2018 accounts had still not been published, which delayed the release of the 2019 numbers too.

Its been the worst year weve had by a country mile, Sinclair admits, referring to the endless checks by external auditors and a Financial Conduct Authority investigation.

It doesnt stop, he says. I go home and Im still dealing with it. It is the relentless nature of it that has been the most knackering.

Sinclair, the chairman, Kershaw, the chief executive, and Muirhead, an executive director, know their time in charge is drawing to an end and are thinking about their legacy.

There was speculation that they might resign last December but they didnt want to run away and felt a sense of responsibility. Weve got to get this bit right and then move on, Muirhead says.

Vin Murria, a serial tech entrepreneur and investor, bought a 13.25% stake in May in a surprise move that signalled M&C Saatchis future could be up for grabs.

Sinclair, Muirhead and Kershaw own only 12% between them, and other predators are said to be watching.

Thats why the twin anniversaries the 25th birthday of M&C Saatchi and the 50th of Saatchi & Saatchi, which is now owned by Publicis Groupe carry additional significance for Sinclair, Muirhead and Kershaw because there is a sense of finality.

Saatchi is still the most famous name in global advertising and, as the trio reveal in this interview, they still hold out hope that the two rival agencies might be reunited one day.

By contrast, Charles and Maurice are in no mood to mark the anniversaries unlike 10 years ago, when M&C Saatchi and Saatchi & Saatchi threw a huge, joint bash at Charles Saatchi Gallery, attended by Baroness Thatcher and other big names from politics and the media.

When Campaign approached Charles about this article and sent him a copy of the 1970 launch interview he gave to this magazine he replied by email: Sorry to say that I have no wish to participate. Apologies for being a dud.

Maurice, who was a business executive at Haymarket, the owner of Campaign, before starting up Saatchi & Saatchi with his older brother, also declined to talk in keeping with his policy of saying nothing since quitting M&C Saatchi last year.

This, then, is the story of the Saatchis three most loyal lieutenants. A trio who are arguably more dedicated than even the brothers to sustaining the Saatchi advertising brand.

Charles ambition and vision for Saatchi & Saatchi were evident in that pulsating Campaign interview from 50 years ago that we republish as part of our coverage. He was 27 and already wise beyond his years because he had started in advertising in his teens, Sinclair recalls.

Charles had already run a consultancy, Cramer Saatchi, which he set up in 1967, and was on a high as the team, which included Sinclair, had just produced the Pregnant man, which had picked up a clutch of industry awards.

Most advertising was either terrific or shit, according to Charles, who exuded energy, aggressive salesmanship and contempt for most existing agencies in the interview.

All our creative people have to act as if they were salesmen, he vowed. They have to imagine themselves in the clients position all the time. They have to see themselves with a warehouse full of product that has to be sold.

His comments resonate to this day as clients and agencies grapple with digital disruption and the need to grow again in a Covid world albeit Muirhead says the agency soon discovered that Charles couldnt leave all the selling to the creatives and it still needed account executives.

For Sinclair, Muirhead and Kershaw, that 1970 interview captures a lot of what made Saatchi such a powerful agency brand over the next 50 years.

We wanted to be the biggest and the best and you see this running right through the article, Sinclair recalls. When we started, all the big agencies were crap and all the great agencies were minute.

Part of the problem was the industry at the time was a club, he continues, as Muirhead and Kershaw let him do the talking. It had sherry at 11am, gin and tonic at 5pm, and it was all a lot of really nice people having a rather nice life. And then we came along.

Charles and Maurice, in particular, were outsiders from an Iraqi-Jewish family in north London and, whether they knew it or not, they had an outsiders marauding attitude, according to Sinclair.

If you can be Jewish Puritans, thats what we were. We didnt do any of the drinks, we didnt do any of the drugs, he explains, before Muirhead tries to correct him: Hang on, Jeremy! Sinclair chuckles: Sorry, this was before Bill joined.

A lot of the agency was staffed by young men in their early twenties and there was a freedom to do things that might not necessarily work and not be punished for it, Muirhead says. That I found really attractive when I first came. It brought a certain kind of person to the company the kind of people who would do things that other people thought werent possible. And that was very much there from the beginning. Hence the agencys mantra: Nothing is impossible.

The focus for Sinclair was the work. All we were there to do was to crash out great ads and the better the ads, the more we could get away with, he says. Charles was a great writer. We had a brief to tell people to wash their hands and he wrote, Wash your hands, you know where theyve been. It was in your face, it was making you think about your crotch without mentioning it, its what we did we were there to knock the socks off the world.

Charles had an innate ambition to make the Saatchi brand and work such as the Pregnant man famous, Sinclair says, while Maurice was a brilliant suit with clients, according to Kershaw.

With hindsight, it looks like Charles and Maurice wanted to build a mythology around the Saatchi name from the start but Sinclair insists: We never said we were doing that. We were building the brand.

Working for Thatcher on successive election-winning campaigns was crucial as it took a locally famous agency and made it globally famous, he says. It opened doors right across the planet because of what wed done. Indeed, four decades later, when Thatcher died in 2013, M&C Saatchi ran a tribute poster to the best client we ever had. Sinclair says: That was not fawning to anyone. We actually think she made the agency.

A lot of the Saatchi & Saatchi story between 1970 and 1995 has become part of advertising folklore and been told many times: the commercial expansion under Tim Bell, the managing director, who went on to found Bell Pottinger; the global M&A spree overseen by Martin Sorrell, the finance director, who quit to run WPP; the iconic headquarters at 80 Charlotte Street and the parties; the creation of Zenith, a pioneering media agency that aggregated the Saatchi agencies buying power; then the ill-fated bid for Midland Bank and taking on too much debt, followed by the boardroom coup against Maurice at the end of 1994 and Charles exit with him.

The accounts from that year give a picture of Saatchi & Saatchis scale: 11,000 staff and annual revenue of 775m but group operating margin was only 5.7% and it had net debt of 128m. The idea of being the biggest and the best turned into carry on growing until we got worse, Sinclair says, only half-joking.

For Maurice, in particular, who was ousted, his departure was a humiliation. As a result, there probably was an element of revenge for him and Charles when it came to starting up M&C Saatchi, according to Kershaw.

However, Sinclair, Muirhead and Kershaw chose to quit. They felt no bitterness because they had already been plotting to leave and launch their own shop (although their exit did trigger a spectacular legal battle with their old employer).

Saatchi & Saatchi continued, without the brothers and their lieutenants, and its history after 1995, when it became a subsidiary of Publicis Groupe, is important, but not the focus here.

The breakaway agency announced its arrival on the front page of Campaign in January 1995 but the story, Top Saatchi rebels join Maurices new agency, didnt fully reflect the power play behind the scenes.

The agency could easily have been called Sinclair, Muirhead and Kershaw with no mention of Saatchi because the trio came close to launching without the brothers involvement. How close? Very, Muirhead says.

However, the lure of the Saatchi brand and their loyalty to Maurice and Charles (below) were strong. Maurice phoned to ask them: What are you boys going to do? They told him about their start-up and he immediately consulted Charles, before calling them back five minutes later.

Maurice said: Ive spoken to Charles and we think its a brilliant idea that youre starting your company and wed like to join your company and we think you boys should have 5% each, Muirhead says, recalling how he and Kershaw were in Sinclairs office, listening in. And Jeremy said: Stop, stop, Maurice. Our days of serfdom are over. If you and Charles would like to join us, you can do as equal partners.

Maurice spoke to Charles again, they agreed to join, and M&C Saatchi was born. We gave away 40% of the equity for the name Saatchi, Sinclair says. We thought having spent 25 years making the name Saatchi famous, it was a door-opener for us. So thats how important we thought it was. We owned 100%. We went down to 60%, giving the two brothers 20% each, for the thrill of having M&C Saatchi in our title.

The new agencys proposition the new testament, Kershaw calls it was different. M&C Saatchi would focus on organic growth, rather than acquisitions, and eschew debt learning the lessons from what had happened between 1989 and 1994, Kershaw says. Obviously Martin had gone off to pursue that [M&A-driven] model brilliantly in his way [at WPP]. We thought wed do it differently.

Yet Sinclair insists that in some ways M&C Saatchi stuck to the core values from 1970: Why dont you look at it not as a new agency? Instead, they felt, it was a continuation of the old agency. We left the company because it was being taken off in a direction that we didnt recognise, authorise, believe in. In a way, we were just carrying on, according to Sinclair.

And it was exciting to start over. They wanted to see if lightning could strike twice, he says, because so many successful agency leaders dont have the partners, the glue or the luck second time round.

M&C Saatchi prospered. Some of Saatchi & Saatchis clients, notably British Airways and the Conservatives, joined the new agency, although the latters 1997 general election defeat signalled the times were changing.

The new shop wanted to be the most sought-after agency in the world and its slogan was Brutal simplicity of thought, although Sinclair concedes: We werent particularly out to be the best.

Charles left but Maurice remained a formidable handler of business, Kershaw says. He had an amazing relationship with Colin Marshall, who was chairman of BA, and with Mars. We wouldnt have got those businesses and we wouldnt have been able to make great work for them [without Maurice].

M&C Saatchi went on to float on the stock market in 2004 but avoided making big acquisitions. Instead it built an international network organically, backing agency entrepreneurs in local markets and giving them minority stakes in return that could be turned into shares.

The group also diversified by discipline as it moved into media, CRM, public relations, sports marketing and talent management. Savvy investments included backing Walker Media, which was eventually bought by Publicis Groupe, and M&C Saatchi Mobile, which is now M&C Saatchi Performance.

The basic model that says dont fuel it all by M&A and just raising capital all the time and buying stuff but actually find really talented people, whether that be in new verticals or geographies, and make them your partners and give them meaningful equity in it, I think that should last beyond us, Kershaw says.

And the Saatchi name, not just the offer of financial backing, has been a vital ingredient in attracting those agency entrepreneurs. In terms of developing the new model, it would have been a lot tougher without the Saatchi brand, Kershaw believes.

More agency talent will want a stake in their own businesses in future, according to Sinclair, who points to the record number of start-ups and people registering website domains in recent years across the UK economy. I think more and more people will refuse to be wage slaves, he predicts. Even people in jobs are starting things on the side.

M&C Saatchi has been a sweet set-up for Sinclair, Muirhead, Kershaw and Maurice Saatchi, who sat pretty in their shared office on the top floor of their Golden Square headquarters and were able to fend off questions about succession at least until the accounting problems.

Steadily rising revenue and profit growth were good for shareholders while the founders collected bonuses, dividends and even rent from the agency because they owned the freehold of the Golden Square building for a time.

One criticism of M&C Saatchis model is that it lacks genuine ambition. The group has 140 subsidiaries but it seems more like a collection of cottage businesses that are united by a brand and a network but have limited scale.

Sinclair concedes M&C Saatchi could have been bigger: But we still have grown quite nicely. Weve still got 2,200 or so people around the planet. Weve still got 140 companies.

The network might look complicated but the model itself is simple, he maintains: There is an area that does need finessing how do people get out of their local equity into the global equity? That model there is up for inspection at the moment and does need to be refined. (M&C Saatchis share price drop in the last year means the global equity is worth less.) That doesnt deny the fact that people work better, people look after their homes better, Mrs Thatcher said, if they own it, he says.

M&C Saatchis last accounts show annual revenues of 255m, making it a third of the size of Saatchi & Saatchi 25 years ago (and that excludes inflation). However, it had no debt, which was a blessing given what happened next, plus the Covid downturn.

M&C Saatchis board discovered irregularities at four UK subsidiaries after a new finance director joined the parent company in spring 2019. The company alerted shareholders in August, only to tell them in December that the situation was worse than feared.

Sinclair, Muirhead and Kershaw are wary of discussing the saga. Their faces stiffen and they say they are limited in what they can say for now because of the FCAs investigation.

You have to say we didnt have sufficient grip on the financial management of the company, a chastened Kershaw admits. At the end of the day, its our ultimate responsibility to make sure that the finances and controls of the company were correct.

They feel let down by people they trusted, Muirhead adds, but they have a determination to put it right, not to run away, not to try and avoid our responsibility. Sinclair agrees and, when asked to elaborate, refers to his entry in the Campaign A List earlier this year about his biggest screw-ups. Trusting accountants, he wrote.

Arguably the failings went beyond the finances. The groups many subsidiaries and back-office systems made it overly complex, even if it didnt lead to the accounting irregularities.

Kershaw points out there are only about 25 key companies within the 140 subsidiaries but concedes the complexity of that spiders web needs to be simplified, and M&C Saatchi will announce the results of a strategic review later in the autumn.

Then there was the issue of M&C Saatchis non-executive directors, Lord Dobbs, Sir Michael Peat and Lorna Tilbian. They made up less than half the board and two had links to the company that pre-dated them joining, which raised questions about independence. Kershaw doesnt disagree.

Still, once the irregularities emerged, the NEDs turned against Sinclair, Muirhead and Kershaw as did Maurice Saatchi, who resigned as an executive director in a one-line letter.

When asked, Sinclair, Muirhead and Kershaw say they have had no contact with Maurice since that day a brutal end to 49 years of working together.

I just wish him well, Sinclair says, referring to the grief that Maurice has suffered since being widowed.

None of the trio has had contact with Charles for years, but they find it easier to talk about him.

Charles will forever be on a pedestal in my mind, Sinclair says. He taught me everything I knew about advertising. I have tremendous affection for him and will do until I shuffle.

The bonds run deep between Sinclair, Muirhead and Kershaw and some of their long-serving colleagues such as Moray MacLennan (the most likely heir apparent) and Tim Duffy, who both joined from Saatchi & Saatchi. It is a family business, Sinclair says. We may not be blood family but we are family.

Sinclairs slideshow of work brings back many memories for the trio, who enthuse over past glories like the time a client dismissed the idea of putting an ad on the Berlin Wall when it fell in 1989. The agency ran the ad for itself and sent an executive to Germany with the banner that said: Saatchi & Saatchi first over the wall. Sinclair grins: We were the first agency to stick an advert on the wall you cant forget that. An advert for ourselves we keep doing that, we advertise ourselves.

They love talking about the work. Sinclair says: Its because were salesmen, really. Were showmen. He is still creating ads, including one to mark the joint 25th and 50th anniversaries. I get a kick out of it. When I wrote it the other day, I felt better afterwards. Is it a drug? I dont know but I love doing it. I love having a blank piece of paper theres nothing on it and then suddenly something appears on it. You think, Where did that come from? What is this? That to me is the pleasure of producing, out of an apparent nothing, something. I just think its a great thing to do. The more people that love it, the better it is.

Muirhead also remains in love with the craft, although he sees it more through the business lens of the account man: You can see afterwards what happened and it sells things. Its very satisfying being able to see after youve done something, products are sold or attitudes are changed.

Kershaw says: Its also a great act of transformation. People say: what is creativity? You give them the most boring explanation of what the selling message for the most boring product can be. And then, through an act of brilliance, you make that boring selling of something boring really interesting.

It will then change how people think or their attitudes to obesity or how they vote or what they do. There is a magic in that. You can go on for 10 minutes about how you feel and then someone puts it into a rhyming couplet. That act of creative transformation is one of the most exciting things in the world. Advertising just happens to be a great commercial manifestation of that creative act.

Their best work from the past 50 years has the same personality that you see in that Charles interview and is distinctive in its own way just like the gentle elegance of Abbott Mead Vickers or the loveliness of BMP morphing into Adam & Eve, Kershaw says.

The theory is nice but the reality is M&C Saatchis flagship UK ad agency has had a mixed record creatively the whole agency still seems to be defined by the work for Thatcher, one person who knows the founders says and a series of shortlived leadership teams. Last year, it lost NatWest, cut a tenth of jobs and merged with CRM shop Lida.

Sinclair remains resolutely upbeat, describing the current management team, Camilla Kemp and Ben Golik, as the best weve ever had.

The 50th and 25th anniversaries of the two rival agencies raise the question about whether M&C Saatchi and Saatchi & Saatchi might ever come back together as one. Muirhead admits: The great dream would have been to put the two companies back together and just have one name and to have it in its former glory combined.

Campaign understands there were discussions between M&C Saatchi and Publicis Groupe before the accounting irregularities about a possible combination. Both Sinclair and Maurice Saatchi talked to Maurice Levy, the long-serving chairman of the supervisory board of Publicis Groupe, at various points, including in around 2017.

I certainly had conversations with Maurice [Levy] a couple of years ago, Sinclair reveals. But it partly went nowhere because he, at the time, was very reluctant to let go of anything he had [for example, by spinning off Saatchi & Saatchi]. He was intent on copying what was then Martins model of just growing and growing and growing.

One of the things we put to him was, Why dont we mix Saatchi and M&C Saatchi and have it as an independent floated company?, where you Publicis have a substantial holding in it but so do the public, so that the [entrepreneurial] model can go on. But Levy could not be persuaded. In the end, that required him to let go of some of his Publicis billings. So, then he wouldnt do it, Sinclair says.

He adds wistfully but maybe the new man a reference to Arthur Sadoun, who replaced Levy as chief executive in 2017 might have another think about it. There could be an interesting model there somewhere, Sinclair says.

Kershaw sounds less hopeful. When the two sides started talking, Publicis Groupe had already begun to move to its Power of One model of bringing different agencies and disciplines together for clients such as Procter & Gamble under one roof. Sadly, the longer time we talked to them, the more difficult it was for them to let it [Saatchi & Saatchi] out [from the wider Publicis Groupe] because of the strategy.

Muirhead still holds out hope. It sort of hurt me that the original company is now a subsidiary of a French group, he says, and he is sad that some other big agencies named after their founders such as J Walter Thompson, which I never thought would disappear, have been axed recently. Who knows? Sometime in the future, maybe in my dreams, there would be a coming back together [of the two rival Saatchi brands] with the same spirit and new people.

Sinclair, Muirhead and Kershaws enduring love for the Saatchi brand is palpable. Weve moved 20 yards in 50 years, Sinclair says, noting the first office in 1970 was in Golden Square.

So how much have they become the Saatchi torchbearers as the brothers have lost interest? Saatchi always was a group of people, Sinclair says, referring to the old days at Saatchi & Saatchi. Maurice and Charles were the headline act. But the strength of the place was we managed to pull an extraordinary group of people together. It always was, in my view, a conglomerate.

Sydney Thorvaldson Ranks No. 1 in the Nation for Cross Country – WyoPreps

The No. 1-ranked distance runner in the country happens to be the star runner from Rawlins. Its senior Sydney Thorvaldson.

She sits atop the list of the MileSplit 50.

Last Saturday at the Heritage Distance Classic in Colorado, Thorvaldson produced the fastest 5K run of the year with a time of 16:19. Its a new course record and a new personal record. The event was held on the Liberty Bell Invitational course in Littleton, CO. That event was canceled earlier this year due to the virus.

Thorvaldson became just the eighth female runner all-time in cross country to record a time under 16:30 in a 5K. She accomplished the feat on a course thats just over 5,300 feet in elevation.

The Rawlins senior is already the most-decorated runner in Wyoming state history. Thorvaldson is a 15-time state champion and has been honored with the most Gatorade awards in the state with five. She also owns nine state records.

Add another accomplishment to the list with her time under 16:30.

In case you missed it earlier this summer, WyoPreps David Settle went to Rawlins to visit with Thorvaldson in-person to gain more of a perspective on the senior. She spoke on a variety of topics, including running, her top college choices shes looking at, and even what shes interested in away from running. You can watch that video below. It also includes her coachs perspective, from Rawlins coach Nancy Steinberg.

Rawlins will host the Rawlins Invitational on Friday, Sept. 18 at Sinclair.

VOICES: School layoffs irresponsible and senseless act that cheats Stivers students, artist says – Hamilton Journal News

ExploreVOICES: This is temporary. It is also painful, Dayton superintendent and board president say of 241 layoffs and furloughs

Shelly Sinclair taught us the following in our very first theatre class in 1992: professionals write it down, amateurs remember. In 2019, I either built, produced, directed, or acted in 44 productions.

One of those productions featured Rico Parker, an 2002 Colonel White graduate and member of Actors' Equity Association. The production was one of the most successful of the Columbus theater season, according to both its critical and community response.

I ask every stage manager who works with me to keep extra pens and tablet chargers in case the actors need help with their notes.

Michael Mangan conducted the orchestra where I played third cello at Stivers. His first lesson to us: I recently agreed to be the spokesperson for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra in a series of online videos to be aired weekly in the Columbus City elementary schools.

I could have achieved none of these things had I not received such a solid grounding at Stivers. My contemporaries and I received said grounding not just from the teachers listed above, but hundreds of others whove touched thousands of other students' lives, all through artistic education. We are intelligent, we are driven, we are expressive, and ultimately all most of us want to do is make a better world doing what we love to do.

Cutting those programs insults all of us. All the board has to do to correct the insult is reverse the decision and give Janelle the chance to bounce song and arrangement ideas off the teacher who inspired her to apply to Berklee in the first place.

Even if its via Zoom.

David Harewood is a freelance stagehand, director, and political/community organizer. He was born in Dayton, but now resides in Columbus.

UO, OHSU work to prevent special education teacher burnout – AroundtheO

Researchers at the College of Education and Oregon Health and Science University are collaborating to address stress and burnout among special education teachers, especially as educators transition to online teaching.

The goal of Project Resilience: A Neurological and Psychosocial Collaborative to Prevent Occupational Burnout of K-12 Educators is to develop a better understanding of risk factors associated with burnout that can be identified prior to entering the field.

We are committed to finding approaches to address prevention, rather than crisis-oriented responses, said Chris Knowles, a research associate professor in the College of Education.

As a former special education teacher for students with emotional and behavioral challenges, Knowles has first-hand knowledge of the effects of working in such a demanding job.

Knowles, John Seeley, James Sinclair, Kate Bromley, Paulina Whitehat and Carolyn Griffith represent the University of Oregon in the project, while Alexander Stevens, David Lahna and Barry Oken represent OHSU.

Educators report that feeling high levels of stress can lead to leaving the field. Teachers with high stress and low coping abilities are associated with poorer student outcomes than teachers with low stress and better coping abilities.

Also, experiences of burnout are often associated with poor classroom environments and challenging student behavior. This is known as the burnout cascade, which occurs in three phases: emotional exhaustion, de-personalization and the feeling of a lack of accomplishment in ones work.

Given these findings, there is an urgent need to identify strategies to prevent or ameliorate teacher burnout in order to improve occupational well-being and reduce the epidemic of teacher attrition, Knowles said.

The team recently received a grant to support the development and design of a collaborative research plan. The team has collected exploratory data from special education teachers and graduate students.

Researchers are using a mixed-methods approach to analyze the data to learn about the phenomena of stress and burnout with attention to changes in education brought about by COVID-19. Though the data is still being analyzed, COVID-19 appears to have brought incredible changes in teaching demands.

Based on initial findings, it appears that the causes of stress have dramatically changed for teachers during the rapid transition to providing online instruction, Knowles said.

Research into teacher burnout has only been conducted within the past 10 years. Proposed strategies to address burnout, like mindfulness meditation and development of classroom management, have had relatively little effect on attrition.

The biological and neurological aspect of teacher burnout, however, has not been studied extensively. The research group proposes that investigating teacher burnout at both a biological/neurobiological and psychosocial level could offer a more comprehensive understanding of which prevention methods can be developed.

Our end goal is to use a variety of measures to identify risk and protective factors for burnout in special education teachers, Knowles said.

By identifying factors that could potentially cause burnout, special education licensure programs can identify education students who could benefit from additional support to manage stress prior to entering the job market.

Once additional research questions have been identified, the team will apply for more funding to conduct a pilot study, solidify a proof of concept and produce further publications that will be meaningful to education professionals.

Additional funding for this project will allow us to develop innovative and novel lines of research that capitalize on the strengths of the behavioral neuroscience program at OHSU and the Department of Special Education and Clinical Sciences in the College of Education at the UO, Knowles said.

Capturing the look and feel of Idaho’s backcountry in your backyard – East Idaho News

How to effectively capture the look and feel of Idahos backcountry in your backyard | Lance Ellis, EastIdahoNews.com

There is nothing as interesting and enjoyable as spending time in the forests or mountain areas in Idaho. Whether its the beauty, the quiet, the trees, the interesting rocks, the shade, the adventure, or any of the infinite reasons to go out and get away from the world; the backcountry of Idaho is an incredible place to enjoy.

Most jobs and locations arent conducive to having the time to get away after work, but with some planning, work and budgeting, you can create a backyard that has some of your favorite things from Idahos backcountry in your own yard.

To re-create the natural ecology of eastern Idaho, I would do the following things:

Living in the mountains, we have a wide variety of different kinds of rocks to choose from ranging from sandstone, river rocks, lava rocks, and many other kinds. The type of rock can add or detract from the style of the mountain landscape that you are trying to create.

Put your yard together the way that mother nature does, meaning dont plant trees or shrubs in straight lines and instead put natural curves into the layout of your yard. Use groupings of plants to make your yard more reflective of what you see in the mountains. Aspens for example never grow alone in the mountains, nor do they grow in a straight line. Trees in natural settings grow in large groupings or clusters, which is why we call them either an entire forest or a grove of trees. This way of landscaping can work well with urban settings as most people would like the privacy, screening, and shade that a grove of trees would provide.

Lance Ellis | EastIdahoNews.com

While water features and small ponds may look attractive, they are a lot of work, are expensive, and are a drowning hazard for children. More authentic to our area than an actual water feature is a dry creek bed since we live in a high-altitude desert, and dry creek beds are quite common. Putting in a dry creek bed is a great way to utilize a difficult area in your yard that may not have a specific purpose, and also saves on water since plants used in dry creek beds are normally drought-tolerant, deep-rooted, and low maintenance.

Detective Comics #1027 brings an impressive roster of comic creators to celebrate 1,000 issues since the Dark Knight's debut on the title.

Over 80 years since Batman's debut in 1939's Detective Comics #27 by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, DC Comics has pulled out all the stops for Detective Comics #1027 to commemorate 1,000 issues since its flagship superhero's first appearance. With an all-star roster of comic book creators writing and illustrating a collection of short stories examining the Caped Crusader's extensive legacy, DC's latest oversized anniversary special explores the past, present and future of Batman, with most of the short stories serving as memorable quick takes on the iconic superhero.

With twelve stories in all, the special offers a chance to see longtime writers who had acclaimed, influential runs on the character in the past return for a new tale to weave starring the Dark Knight. Some examine Batman's impact through the eyes of the average, nondescript characters of Gotham City or through the prism of his most sinister villains. Some explore how Bruce Wayne still manages to show even the most experienced members of the Bat Family a thing or two out on the field. Some tease upcoming storylines that will have Batman play a prominent role. But in every single story in the anthology special, Batman's presence looms over the proceedings even in the cases when he himself isn't the respective story's protagonist.

Even the stories featuring writers not as extensively associated with Batman do a good job, with Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky's tale revolving around Batman's relationship with his most hated nemesis as a particular standout while James Tynion IV and Riley Rossmo's short story focuses on Bruce's complicated relationship with death and the afterlife while refreshingly not coming off as dour and overly somber. There are multiple stories that use the anniversary as an opportunity to revisit Batman's Golden Age origins, with Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham's story perhaps being the most meta-textual nod and a strong callback to that original Kane/Finger story from 1939.

The issue really excels on its variety of artists, from Eduardo Risso's grounded, gritty style to Brad Walker, Andrew Hennessy and Nathan Fairbairn's full-bodied approach that perfectly sets the tone for the special right out the gate. David Marquez and Alejandro Sanchez get the chance to showcase the entire Bat Family in their story, providing a fun mystery while demonstrating the clear difference between the individual members through body language and action. And the most emotional story in the entire anthology issue has Tom King sync perfectly with Walter Simonson and Laura Martin while setting the stage for King's own upcoming Batman/Catwoman maxi-series as a clear reminder of the emotional core that resonated from his recently concluded run from the Batman ongoing series, with Simonson and Martin's visual delivered with especially heartbreaking aplomb.
