Lions Vision Day Rally - Saturday - November 12, 2012 - Wilmer Eye Clinic Tour Dr. Ava Katherine Bittner received her Optometry degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia, and her PhD in clinical investigation from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. She completed a clinical research post-doctoral fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute, and then joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Bittner #39;s research is examining the relationships between psychosocial factors and day to day variations in vision or photopsias among visually impaired patients with retinal degeneration or glaucoma, and she aims to design and conduct clinical trials involving interventions for these patients in the future. Her research interests include the psychophysical assessment of the healthy and diseased visual system, both to increase the understanding of this system and to develop tools to monitor disease and therapeutic outcomes. She is also interested in complementary and alternative approaches to sight preservation and disease/symptom attenuation in retinal degenerations, and collaborates with researchers from the Johns Hopkins Center for Mind-Body Research and department of Behavioral Science. _____________________________________________ J. Brent Hunter has been appointed director of development in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Cal State San Bernardino.
Hunter, who began his position on Nov. 1, was most recently the director of development at the School of Business Administration at University of California, Riverside.
Hunter brings a wide spectrum of experience in program development, building volunteer and community support, as well as creating recognition activities. He also has held a variety of leadership roles in business management.
The critical role that CSUSB plays in creating a positive economic future for the county of San Bernardino is very important, and Im looking forward to contributing to that role, said Hunter.
Brent brings a depth of experience in private business and nonprofit fundraising that will broaden CSUSBs philanthropic efforts to increase student scholarships, strengthen opportunities for faculty research and enhance the learning environment on campus, said Cindi Pringle, CSUSBs associate vice president of development.
I believe the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences will have a huge opportunity to grow its alumni support along with business and community support for our students and programs, said Hunter.
He earned a bachelors degree in economics with a minor in anthropology from UC Santa Barbara and a masters degree in urban institutions and systems from Claremont Graduate University.
Im excited to find relevance between my academic background and the work that I do, Hunter said. Working in the area of economics and anthropology within the college fits so nicely with my experience and knowledge.
Previously, he was executive director of the Orange Chamber of Commerce and has served as president or executive vice president at the chambers of commerce in Long Beach, Ontario and Chino Valley.
Also a business entrepreneur, Hunter and his wife Sherry are co-owners of Bert & Rockys Ice Cream Company in Claremont. The Hunters reside in Ontario.

President Obama's re-election team has already been lauded for its mastery of data and organziation, but a feature in today's The New York Times looks at another secret, and more subtle, weapon: Behavioral science. Reporter Benedict Carey talks to some of the members of the campaign's "COBS" team, an informal group of unpaid advisors who shared their knowledge on the latest academic research and theories on how to influence the public's knowledge behavior.

Publicly, the groupwhich it gave itself the name of "consortium of behavioral scientists"where just friendly volunteers offering advice. None of the social scientists and psychologists who took part in the discussions actually worked for the campaign, but it's clear that their ideas were appreciated and taken seriously by campaign strategists who deployed their best techniques in advertisments and voter mobilization efforts.

The tricks are sublte and don't work on everyone, but in the all-important ground game every little bit helps.Among the insights that were share are the fact the people like conform to social norms, both in the community and in their own past. So telling voters that their neightbors have already voted or reminding them about their past support, makes those voters more likely to take action. Volunteers might ask people if they've made a plan for voting on Election Day, because studies show that creating even a simple plan increase the chances that a person will follow through.Research has also shown that it's better to combat a negative story, by promoting a different, more positive trait.For example, instead of constantly denying the rumors that the President is a Muslim, his campaign instead reminds people that he is Christian.

The campaign wouldn't admit to using any of the knowledge that was sharednot even with the academics who shared itbut there's no doubt that the Obama camp took the messages to heart and used them to their advantage. The group said they were ignored by previous Democratic campaigns (as well, as Mitt Romney), but we suspect that psychologist departments across the country will be the ones getting phone calls in the next four years.
