Duke University Chapel
The Duke University School of Nursing will work to increase the number of minority nursing students who are prepared to transition to PhD programs in nursing and other related biomedical/behavioral science disciplines at Duke University.
Duke announced the new program to be in conjunction with Winston-Salem State University and with help from a $1.2 million, five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health.
Since 2004, the School of Nursing has grown considerably -- doubling the number of degree programs from two to four, increasing its student enrollment from 440 to 772 and expanding the schools faculty from 33 to 77. In 2006, the school moved into a state-of the-art, 59,000-square-foot building. In October of this year, ground was broken on a 45,000-square-foot addition that is expected to be completed in 2014.
These figures were compiled by representatives from the School of Nursing in a presentation made to the Board of Trustees, which met this past weekend for the final time of the semester.
Last week, trustee chairman Richard Wagoner addressed Dukes Academic Council, the first time in the universitys history that a sitting chairman addressed the council.

DURHAM, NC -- The Duke University School of Nursing and Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) have received a $1.245 million, five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health to increase the number of underrepresented WSSU minority nursing students who are prepared to transition to PhD programs in nursing, and other related biomedical/behavioral science disciplines at Duke University.
Entitled "Bridges to the Doctorate Program," this unique collaboration is the second of its kind in the nation. "Included in our strategic objectives is the goal to promote and develop a diverse group of nurse scientist faculty prepared to lead in the discovery of new knowledge to inform health care. This speaks to the essence of what is the Duke University School of Nursing," said Debra Brandon, Director, of the PhD in Nursing program and Associate Professor. "This is a wonderful opportunity to work with our colleagues at Winston-Salem State University, to create a direct link between their Masters of Nursing Science (MSN) Program and our PhD program at the Duke School of Nursing," she said.
Duke and WSSU will work together to implement a 17-credit hour Research Honors Track within WSSU's MSN program. The enhanced program will consist of early and on-going mentored research experiences, new and strengthened research courses, and a year-long integrated intensive mentored research experience including an intensive eight-week summer research internship at Duke University.
About Duke University School of Nursing
Duke University School of Nursing as a diverse community of scholars and clinicians, educates the next generation of transformational leaders in nursing, advances nursing science in issues of global import, and fosters the scholarly practice of nursing. In 2011, U.S. News and World Report ranked Duke among the top seven graduate schools of nursing in the nation. The National Institutes of Health awarded $4.3 million in research funding to DUSON (Oct.1, 2011, through Sept. 30, 2012), making it one of the top 10 nursing schools engaged with NIH-funded research. The school offers the masters, PhD, and doctor of nursing practice degrees, as well as an accelerated bachelor of science in nursing degree to students who have previously graduated from college. More than 750 students are enrolled in the School of Nursing one of the largest numbers in the school's 80-year history.

Jumping Hurdles for Behavioral Science
By Troy Daniel Henion Jumping Hurdles This is a song that I am in the process of recording. I only have the guitars done so far. I plan on adding drums and vocals soon. I decided to use this as my creative piece for this project because it shows me in the process of achieving a goal. What are your personal, academic, and professional goals? My personal goals are to gain as much knowledge about the music and entertainment industry as possible and to have a positive impact upon it, and to create an influential, significant, and timeless image of myself in this world through my music. My academic goals are to complete my bachelor #39;s degree in recording arts and move on to a master #39;s degree in entertainment business. My professional goals are to open and run my own recording studio and record label and support artists that are creative and original and to be a prominent recording artist in the industry myself as well. What are the barriers or hurdles you think could hold you back from achieving these goals? What strategies will you use to combat those barriers or hurdles? I think the biggest barrier or hurdle will be my self. I don #39;t believe that anyone else can hold me back from getting what I want because I am too persistent and I want it too much to take no for an answer. I might get distracted easily or not see the point of doing something that doesn #39;t seem directly related to obtaining my goals but for times like these I will take a quick step back to look at the bigger ...From:Troy HenionViews:0 0ratingsTime:02:43More inEducation
