Milwaukee-area Ascension team sent to Texas to fight COVID-19 – WTMJ-TV

MILWAUKEE A group of Wisconsins brave nurses are heading to battle COVID-19 on another front line: Deep in the heart of Texas.

The group was sent off Sunday at General Mitchell International Airport to help in Travis County, Texas. The area, which holds Texas capital city Austin, has eclipsed 11,000 cases this past week.

Nurses gathered in a small prayer circle before taking flight.

Its kind of been a whirlwind. It kind of came up quickly, said Lisa Knigge, a respiratory therapist at Ascension St. Josephs.

Colleen Henley, an Intensive Care Unit specialist said she is anxious and nervous about the big assignment.

I didnt sleep last night. Im excited for the opportunity, Henley said.

The group will be helping out in many ways, as part of a greater 20-person team. Each person volunteered to go.

This week, there was a call for help and I put a call out to the state and asked... lets start with volunteers, Heather Schimmers, Chief Nursing Officer of Ascension Wisconsin said.

Kathleen Henley, Colleens mother, dropped off her daughter. Kathleen is also a nurse in the Ascension network.

Very proud. Im very proud of her, Kathleen Henley said.

The team is expected to return to the Milwaukee area in the next two weeks.

25-year agreement with Central Michigan University and 2 hospitals aims to keep medical graduates in the regi – mlive.com

MOUNT PLEASANT, MI - Central Michigan University has signed a 25-year agreement with Covenant HealthCare and Ascension St. Marys hospitals reaffirming their shared commitment to graduate medical education.

CMU recently announced the commitment, which will provide a framework for future resident education and increase the health care capacity of the Great Lakes Bay Region. Dr. George Kikano, CMUs vice president for Health Affairs and dean of the College of Medicine, stated that the commitment ensures residents will learn from highly trained medical professionals while serving Saginaw and 14 other counties.

The CMU College of Medicine is one of six Michigan medical schools with full accreditation, according to CMU. All students who are preparing to become a medical doctor must complete a residency. Students at CMU can complete residencies in emergency medicine, family medicine, general surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatric medicine and surgery or psychiatry.

CMU works with 60 faculty-physicians who are employed by CMU Medical Education Partners, CMU stated. These individuals are considered CMU College of Medicine faculty members. The 25-year agreement will allow more CMU residents to be placed within the Great Lakes Bay Region.

Dr. Samuel Shaheen, executive director of CMU Medical Education Partners, stated that around two-thirds of doctors opt to continue practicing medicine in the area where they competed their residencies. As such, the extended agreement with Covenant and Ascension may keep more CMU students in the Great Lakes Bay Region after graduation.

This agreement provides a vision for comprehensive educational programs that will enhance medical services and public health initiatives while providing a pipeline of physicians for the region, Shaheen stated.

The Ascension give themselves a new name – Cageside Seats

Remember Viktor & Konnor, former NXT Tag champs The Ascension? Their main roster run started bad when D-X, the APA, and the New Age Outlaws clowned them at Raw Reunion. They got a win over Road Dogg & Billy Gunn, but it never really got better. It did allow them to show off their comedic chops on Breezangos Fashion Files, though! So... that was cool.

The duo were released by WWE back in December 2019, and worked a handful of indie shows as Big Kon & Vik in the small window between their non-competes expiring and the pandemic shutting everything down. They never got a chance to unveil a new team name though.

Until last week, when they revealed their new name to WrestleZone, along with a rejected idea.

Vik: We just got our new name basically, thankfully enough. We were going to use FKA for the time being just because we liked that. We knew everybody just knew us as The Ascension for the longest time, and to jump off [of that], we couldnt really figure it out for a while. Wed been talking back and forth so much, going through all of these other ideas and it kinda got presented to us the other week via interview do you want to tell him?

Big Kon: The Awakening. Its like its the next step up from The Ascension. Its still got that connection so the fans can understand it and its something that Vik and I think is badass regardless.

FKA - as in formerly known as - is pretty funny. But its not super marketable, and there are already a couple guys doing the ambiguous acronym gimmick over at AEW.

The Awakening works for the reasons FKA Konnor describes, though. Sounds like a winner.

Now lets talk about Big Kon...

Two years ago, the Wombats brought home a state title – Donaldsonville Chief

If there's one thing you can count on every summer in Ascension it's the widespread success of the parish's American Legion baseball team, the Gauthier & Amedee Wombats.

If theres one thing you can count on every summer in Ascension its the widespread success of the parishs American Legion baseball team, the Gauthier & Amedee Wombats.

Theyre having another tremendous season in 2020. It brings up memories of 2018, when the Wombats won their first state title in five years.

The two-year anniversary of that state title win is just around the corner. They won the championship on July 11, 2018. Here is the article the Weekly Citizen published on the occasion:

Wombats take American Legion state championship

Two out of three aint bad. In fact, its pretty great.

Ascensions Gauthier & Amedee American Legion baseball team was hungry for their first state title in five years, but to win it, they had to go through a Jesuit-based Retif Oil squad. The Wombats took two of the three matchups

They earned the second victory in style, as they turned a tight 2-1 contest into a 9-1 laugher courtesy of a six-run fourth inning.

Gauthier & Amedee came into the state tournament in New Orleans as one of the prohibitive favorites. They only lost two regular-season games, and they completed their schedule with a six-game winning streak.

After defeating Refuel in the opener, the Wombats met Retif Oil for the first time all season.

Gauthier & Amedee came from behind to defeat the Oilers, 6-4. Dutchtowns Brayden Caskey supplied a two-RBI single in the fifth inning that proved to be the difference.

From there, the Wombats crushed Best Chevrolet (De La Salle), 16-2, and then squeaked by St. Landry, 7-6, in the semifinals.

The victory finally got them over the hump and set up a championship matchup against Retif Oil.

Just one victory away from a state title, Gauthier & Amedee fell short against the Oilers in the first game last Wednesday evening.

The Wombats fell into a hole right from the start.

Retifs Will Moran was hit by a pitch to lead off the the top of the first, and he was joined on base by Seth Dardar following a walk.

Brian Valigosky then came through with an RBI single, and Zack Casbonne drove in another run with a sacrifice to give the Oilers a 2-0 lead.

They added another run in the top of the sixth, before the Wombats finally got on the scoreboard.

At the bottom of the inning, Dutchtowns Jordan Badame drove in East Ascensions Carson Dabadie with a double.

However, Gauthier & Amedee would not score another run.

Retif put the game away in the seventh with a score of their own. The 4-1 victory forced a winner-take-all game between the two.

In the loss, Badame and Dabadie combined for four hits, but the rest of the Wombats were limited to just three..

Ace Dwain Guice (St. Amant) had been nearly unhittable all summer, but the Oilers got to him on Wednesday evening. In six complete innings, they produced five hits and four runs against him.

But the loss didnt discourage the Wombats.

In the next game, they were the team that jumped out in front 2-0.

In the bottom of the second, Retif committed back-to-back errors. This allowed Dabadie to score. East Ascensions Preston Thrash then came up with an RBI single.

The Oilers cut the Wombat lead in half in the third, but Gauthier & Amedee responded with the knockout punch in the bottom of the fourth.

Dutchtowns Layton Lee reached base on an error to begin the frame. He was joined by Dabadie following a walk.

Thrash came up big once again. His triple brought both runners home. Thrash then scored on yet another Oiler error.

Caskey walked, and Ascension Cahtolics William Dunn joined him on base with a single. Both players then scored on a base hit by St. Amants Zane Zeppuhar.

The Wombat flurry finally ended with an RBI single by St. Amants Reed Babin.

Gauthier & Amedee added an insurance run in the sixth after Thrash scored on a passed ball.

The 9-1 victory awarded the Wombats their first state championship since 2013. It was also their first under second-year head coach Marty Luquet.

Its the franchises eighth state championship, dating back to All-Star Ford.

In the title win, Thrash led the way as he went 2-2 with three RBIs and a walk. He also scored two runs, and he closed out the game from the moundpitching two scoreless innings with five strikeouts.

Dutchtowns Jack Merrifield earned the victory from the bump as he pitched five complete innings in which he surrendered just three hits and one run. He struck out four.

Patient care services unit manager at McLaren Macomb in Mount Clemens

Liddy, who is a Clinton Township resident, never imagined the extent that COVID-19 would test his nursing skills.

However, when the coronavirus gripped southeast Michigans health care system he drew on the experience he had and as a floor nurse working during emergencies provided the care needed during the sudden surges of critical patients.

Asked to run two COVID units with two full nursing staffs, Liddy was able to create an organized and collaborative team of nurses across multiple units, keeping them focused during extraordinary times to continue to offer compassion and provide the best possible care to the patient.

Free trips for heroes

Do you know of a health care worker, who has gone above and beyond their duties during the coronavirus pandemic and deserves the opportunity to hit the road in a cool recreational vehicle?

Then nominate them.

In new program launched this week by Outdoorsy an RV rental and outdoor experience marketplace -- frontline workers throughout the country are being awarded a free three-day, two-night RV rental from Outdoorsy.

Healthcare Hero, is part of a larger national effort to give our heroes across North America the mini getaway they deserve in light of COVID-19.

Among the local individuals, who have been named Healthcare Hero by Outdoorsy is Gary Kanner, an emergency medicine resident at Ascension St. John Hospital in Detroit. Photo courtesy of Outdoorsy.

Among the winners this week is Gary Kanner, an emergency medicine resident at Ascension St. John Hospital in Detroit, who contracted the coronavirus while serving a very vulnerable population on the frontlines. Fortunately, he recovered and got right back to work. Set to finish his last year of residency training and graduate this June, he will be moving to New Mexico. With members of his cohort also scattering across the country to start new jobs, the time they have together is dwindling. That in mind, Kanners girlfriend, Erin Hendrix, nominated him for an RV trip with his co-residents, to get outdoors and spend some much-needed quality time.

Outdoorsy is interested in hearing about doctors, nurses, EMTs, or anyone working in healthcare, who are making a difference and deserve a trip. Nominations for the "Outdoor Hero" can be submitted in the nomination section of the program page at: outdoorsy.com/m/healthcare-heroes

Coronavirus testing aims to reach 60,000 people in East Baton Rouge and Ascension in 12 days – The Advocate

State health officials say their best chance at fighting the resurgence of coronavirus cases in the Baton Rouge area is testing as many people as possible to get a more accurate snapshot of the disease's presence in the community, especially among those infected who aren't displaying symptoms.

Starting Tuesday, the federal government is backing free COVID-19 testing to about 60,000 people over 12 days at three new sites opening in East Baton Rouge Parish and one in Ascension Parish.

"We're trying to flood the market in concentrated areas with access to testing with fast turnaround times," said Kim Hood, COVID-19 community testing coordinator for the state health department. "This initiative is giving us a boost to testing access in a single region to see if we can identify asymptomatic cases, intervene and get people quarantined to try and slow down this continued spread we're seeing."

Baton Rouge was one of three cities identified by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as COVID-19 hotspots after recent spikes in reported cases and hospitalizations since business re-openings began. Jacksonville, Florida, and McAllen, Texas, are the other two launching similar surge testing efforts this week, Hood said.

The new test sites are coming online at a time when many medical facilities are running out of testing kits as new cases surge in the state and across the nation.

Hood said test kits for the sites are being allocated directly by the federal health department, which will supply what's needed to meet the 5,000-per-day test goal they've set for the next 12 days.

People should get their results within three to five days, Hood said.

The Louisiana Department of Health has traced at least 230 cases of the coronavirus to bars across the state, including the more than 100 case

"We've contracted with a single lab that's giving us a considerably shorter turnaround for results than we've seen with a lot of the larger commercial labs," she said.

The new regional testing sites are operating a little differently than many previous ones.

Most notably, they're open to everyone, not just those living in East Baton Rouge Parish or exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms. And people don't have to pay or get doctors orders to receive the tests which have been requirements for many of the drive-thru facilities that opened in Baton Rouge after the virus broke out in the area in March.

"With this surge in testing, we can learn how many people there are who are asymptomatic and walking around with a virus that can be spread," said Dr. Dawn Marcelle, the Louisiana Department of Health medical director for Region 2, which includes most of the Baton Rouge area. "These are people we otherwise might miss if they're not in the hospital or haven't been admitted to an emergency room where they would get tested."

Louisiana health officials on Monday reported 1,101 new coronavirus cases in its daily statewide report, with Region 2 accounting for more than 140 of those diagnoses.

Marcelle noted that research shows the resurgence in COVID-19 cases, especially among young people, is being caused by the "community spread" of the virus outside of high-risk settings such as prisons and nursing homes.

A White House report last week cited Jefferson, Lafayette and East Baton Rouge parishes as having the highest number of new coronavirus cases in the stateover a three-week period. That same report singled out Baton Rouge as having the most newly diagnosed cases, recommending that the government implement a mask order and that people who took part in recent protests against police brutality or attended social gatherings get tested.

Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome followed many of the recommendations in the report, signing an executive order late last week requiring that masks or face coverings be worn in businesses and anywhere in public where social distancing can't occur.

On the first day of Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome's executive order requiring people wear masks at Baton Rouge public businesses, most

"When our numbers are so high that the federal government has concerns and is looking at our city in particular, that should be a wake-up call," Broome said Monday. "People got a little relaxed in terms of adhering to the mandates in Phase 2, and that's what brought us to where we are today."

Susan Hassig, a Tulane University epidemiologist, said the only way to contain the virus and revive the positive trends that prompted the governor to lift his stay-at-home order is the earlier identification of those who are infected. That allows health workers to alert others who were exposed to the virus to the need to take precautions, such as self-isolation.

"If we wait to test sick people when they show up at hospitals, it's too late," she said. "Just testing is valuable. But the real value for the community comes from them letting the health department know who they've spent time with after they've tested positive. Then we can chop off those chains to keep the virus from spreading and spreading."

The new testing sites will be open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week starting Tuesday and ending July 18.

The test sites are:

Also, starting Wednesday a mobile testing site will be at Healing Place Church, 19202 Highland Road in Baton Rouge, through July 18 with the exception of July 12.

Pre-registration isn't required but is encouraged. People can do so at http://www.DoINeedaCOVID19test.com. Those who don't do so earlier can register on site, but it will take longer, officials said.

Test results will be provided by email, and people who test positive will also be contacted by phone. There will not be a phone number to call for results.

The Ascension Recall Their Standout Feud With Finn Balor & KENTA, Reveal Teams Theyd Like To Work With – Wrestlezone

The Watch Listtakes a look at what matches you should be watching while youre at home and they come recommended by your favorite professional wrestling stars.

WrestleZone recently spoke with The Ascension, who are now going by the names Big Kon and Viktor. The duo still holds the record for the longest NXT Tag Team Championship reign ever at 364 days, and theyre surveying the tag team scene as they wait for the right time to return to the ring.

When asked about teams theyd like to see as potential opponents, they namedThe Briscoes, Rock N Roll Express and the Guerrillas Of Destiny (Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa) as some of the names theyd like to work with. Viktor also put over a team on the rise that theyve seen in the journeys around the wrestling world, The Mane Event.

Viktor:Those are the teams that Ive really liked, I like all of those guys. I respect them and want to work with them, especially with Rock N Roll because they are still kicking ass.

I havent gotten to watch a lot of other stuff thats not really on TV. We met a good team, I was surprised when I looked at their social media stuff when we were out in Outlaw Pro Wrestling, Ringleader Midas and Blazin Jay Lyon. Those are two young guys, Viktor said, they were super good kids, great attitudes, and then I looked at their socials and said These guys are actually really good! Watching their stuff, it seemed like they were really polished and looked good, and great attitudes. Thats the one I can say if somebody hasnt heard of them yet, they were someone I was going to watch, thats for sure.

As far as their own matches go, they pointed to their NXT feud with Kenta (Hideo Itami) and Finn Balor as the one that really changed things for them on the brand. Big Kon and Viktor also recalled working with the New Age Outlaws and Too Cool as personal highlights, but emphasized the Itami and Balor team as the main one that stands out.

Kon Kenta and Finn.

Viktor Yeah, that stuff always. I think thats a given. I always remember our [Falls Count Anywhere] match with Hunico and Camacho. [Now respectively known as Sin Cara and Tanga Loa] I felt like that match was one that changed the course for us in NXT. I always go back to that one. It was one of my favorite NXT matches that was on TV.

I feel like I remember more of our live event matches with certain guys that will probably never see the light of day. I think thats the same on the main roster. The Cosmic Wasteland matches were cool. Road Dogg and Billy Gunn were a pretty awesome starter for us to begin with.

Kon When we got to work with Too Cool, that was great. I really think Ive got to say Kenta and Finn were probably the ones that we did the most work with that is something that Im proud of what we did.

Stay tuned for our full interview with The Ascension where they reveal their new team name, talk about their post-WWE plans (including a tease that we might see them back on TV sooner than later), the feeling behind getting called up to the main WWE roster from NXT and much more.

We added some free-to-watch recommendations to the list and selected highlights from The Ascensions career.

Ascension Public Schools asks for input on next school year as COVID-19 pandemic continues - WAFB

Exclusive: Raphael Arndt’s Ascension to CEO of the Future Fund – Chief Investment Officer

Art by Chris Buzelli

Raphael Arndt, chief investment officer of the AUD $205 billion Future Fund, has been selected to serve as chief executive officer beginning on July 1, replacing acting CEO Cameron Price.

Working as an engineer at the beginning of his career, Arndt worked his way through different management firms before beginning his tenure at the Future Fund, where he has expressed his appreciation to be able to benefit future generations of Australians. He joined the fund in February 2008 to lead the infrastructure and timberland investment programs.

He was promoted to CIO in September 2014 and has since been responsible for leading the funds investment team and designing and implementing portfolio strategies across the six funds the Future Fund is responsible for.

Amid market volatility in the first quarter this year, the Future Fund lost just 3.4%, which far outstripped broader benchmarks like the S&P 500, which lost about 20% in the same period, according to its most recent financial report. Arndt said a number of defensive strategies, such as selling the funds illiquid assets, helped the fund prepare for the downturn. The Future Fund was worth about AUD$162 billion (US$116.5 billion) in March, the report said.

Raphael is an effective leader who has proved his ability to build high-performing teams and organizations, Chairman of the Future Fund Board of Guardians Peter Costello said. He has been integral to developing the way the organization works as well as driving the development and implementation of its investment strategy.

Arndt worked diligently in the funds reorganization efforts that were announced in March 2019, helping to design a framework that empowered the funds staff and encouraged greater levels of communication and the dissemination of intelligence among different teams.

We did always have a view that we wanted to collaborate and be joined up, which means that the investors talk to each other, and the top down talk to the bottom up team, and vice versa, Arndt told CIO. They enforce each other, and we built a culture that supported that.

There were a multitude of factors that played into the decisionmaking of Arndt and his colleagues when deciding how best to organize the Future Fund to position it for success. Among them were the changing investment landscape, as more niche investable opportunities presented themselves with sound expected risk-adjusted returns, and also the changing investment mandate of the Future Fund, as it became responsible for the management of more funds portfolios.

We needed to address the cost of capital framework to make it more robust, but also the team had grown and become more complex, because as the markets got more expensive, we had to push into more esoteric and granular strategies, Arndt said. Instead of just doing broad credit, we decided to have a high yield credit strategy, and then we decided to have a private credit strategy, and so forth.

More portfolios mandated to Arndts team from the government also meant operational complexity of the business was increasing, he said. Assets under management today are over $200 billion Australian dollars. Running one large plan is an investment challenge, but running six funds with all different sizes, from AUD 2 billion up to over a AUD 100 billion, is much more operationally complex.

The first two principles the organization was founded upon were to make the employees empowered and informed, Arndt told CIO. What Ive said under that is know your role, know your authority and when to escalate something, take risk confidently, and knowledge is collective. If we have knowledge anywhere in the organization, everyone should have it.

Its not as simple as a delegation framework, because we dont want [people working individually] we want people collaborating. Its more of a network organization than a hierarchy.

Additional investments into the organization would help the staff reach their desired goals with their team restructuring, Arndt added.

Were not where we want to be yet, but were headed towards it, and were investing in technologies to support that such as knowledge management and collaboration software.

Another priority for the team was to emphasize the importance of positioning the teams perspective as long-term investors, Arndt said. Avoiding macro level distractions and noise is paramount to the team focusing on its own individual return targets and characteristics its members look for in opportune investments.

[Another point is] investing into the long-term, he said. Under that I would say avoid noise, especially in the macro where there can be lots of distractions and things that arent really important for long-term investors. Make long-term decisions and ignore peer risk, were here to maximize long-term returns for us that benefit the total portfolio.

The fund has also been making progress on cognitive diversity within its teams. The funds strategic objectives encourage their staff to harness diverse thinking. Be open to different ideas and be open to challenges, use resources flexibly, and embrace external views, Arndt added.

Weve changed the function of our investment committees to be more open to debate, so that the culture of the committee isnt one that shuts down one persons view, but embraces them and asks them to explain why they have a different view, and lets check if we all agree or if we want to change our own views.

Arndt was previously an investment director with Hastings Fund Management and has been involved in infrastructure policy decisions from both the private sector and the public sector, with the Victorian Department of Treasury and Finance. He holds a Ph.D. in private infrastructure policy from the University of Melbourne.

In its latest annual financial report (2018-2019), the Future Fund garnered an 11.5% return, earning it $16.8 billion. Its benchmark target for the year was 5.6%. As CIO, Arndt is responsible for the success of six different funds: the Future Fund ($162 billion), the Medical Research Future Fund ($17 billion), Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Land and Sea Future Fund ($2 billion), DisabilityCare Australia Fund ($16 billion), Future Drought Fund ($4 billion), and Emergency Response Fund ($4 billion).

Opening new school year will be very, very tricky, top La. teacher says – Houma Courier

State education leaders are finalizing guidelines for the reopening of public schools amid thorny questions on whether students will be expected to wear face masks, ways to avoid crowded school buses and how many skittish families will opt for distance learning over traditional classrooms.

"Opening schools is going to be very, very tricky," said Larry Carter, president of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers, echoing a refrain heard around the state.

Some schools resume classes Aug. 6, and earlier in districts offering remedial work because of the sudden shutdown in March.

Exactly what schools will look like this time depends on what phase the state is for combating the coronavirus pandemic, said Cade Brumley, state superintendent of education.

State leaders are expected to hold a press conference, possibly Thursday, to spell out some of the details of what children and parents can expect.

"I think that is our intent, to reopen in congregant form," Brumley said in an interview. "But that will depend on what phase we are in and the decisions that the governor will make."

Brumley said the aim is for the state to provide local educators with what amounts to playbooks that vary based on the state restrictions in place.

Louisiana is in Phase 2 for reopening its economy, which generally limits churches, restaurants and other sites to 50% of capacity.

Gov. John Bel Edwards is set to announce any changes this week but looser restrictions appear unlikely amid the rising number of cases in Acadiana and some other locations.

Once the state is in Phase 3 school restrictions will loosen again while a return to Phase 1, which is not expected, could mean distance learning only.

Brumley emphasized that state guidelines will include minimum standards, best practices and sources for health and other information, leaving flexibility for superintendents in the state's 70 school districts to spell out rules based on conditions in their areas.

He said recommendations around face masks will be based on information from state health officials and others.

"We are still finalizing what that might look like," Brumley said.

He noted that some medical professionals believe masks can be problematic for children because it means touching their face more.

Edwards has repeatedly said residents need to wear face masks while in public.

West Baton Rouge Parish School District Superintendent Wes Watts said some parents have already told him their children will not be back if masks are required.

David Alexander, superintendent of the 23,000-students Ascension Parish school system, said the issue of students wearing masks is up in the air.

"We will follow what the guidelines require," Alexander said.

How to get many of the state's 720,000 public school students to class daily is another key challenge, especially since students typically pile in three to a seat on buses going to and from school.

Districts cannot simply buy more buses to ensure social distancing.

Requiring riders to spread out, with vacant seats in between, will likely mean multiple runs and new routes and pickup times.

"The transportation issue is tricky for a number of reasons," Brumley said. "That makes it one of the most significant challenges."

Traditional classrooms ended nine weeks early because of the pandemic, sparking hasty efforts to switch to distance learning in a state where nearly one third of families lack internet access at home.

Part of the problem major gaps in student access to computers or tablets has been addressed with the help of $260 million from the federal CARES Act.

Students in most school districts will have their own computers once that federal money is utilized, officials said.

Addressing the lack of internet connections, especially in rural areas, remains a major challenge, especially if schools are interrupted again because of the virus.

"We are not solving broadband access in the state of Louisiana over the next month," Brumley noted.

The issue is especially relevant because some families plan to keep their children at home when classes resume amid health concerns, or because districts prefer "blended" school services -- in-person and online.

Watts, whose district includes about 4,000 students, said a survey of parents showed about seven percent plan to rely on distance learning for their child's education.

"If parents are not comfortable sending their child to school we will have a virtual school option," he said.

Officials of the highly-ranked Ascension Parish School District last week asked parents to fill out surveys on whether they prefer online learning and, if so, what kind.

If the state remains in Phase 2 when schools start Ascension plans to have young children in classrooms while older students will be served through distance learning, which has been offered since 2013.

Alexander said his top concern is ensuring a quality school day around a time crunch sparked by steps needed to combat the virus.

"Because to implement some of the anticipated restrictions, guidelines and safety measures when you actually think about it they are going to take some time," he said.

Carter noted that schools will be expected to do more at a time when state aid is frozen.

Tia Mills, president of the Louisiana Association of Educators, said her group is most concerned about the health of students and school employees.

Mills said the LAE opposes a proposal awaiting a House vote House Bill 59 that would remove any civil liability for school districts and colleges for deaths or illnesses caused by the virus.

Top officials of the state Department of Education last week briefed the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education on the recommendations, including input from a wide range of state health officials, a task force set up by the Southern Regional Education Board, the 13-member Superintendent Advisory Group and the Resilient Louisiana Commission.

"We are right where we should be in getting these guidelines right and getting them issued," said Ken Bradford, an assistant state superintendent of education.

Shooting victim, driver killed in Sunday morning car crash identified by medical examiner’s office – Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

A single mother of four died in a car crash after being shot at a party early Sunday morning, authorities said.

Leerance Riley, 29, was driving Victoria R. Smith, 34, to Ascension St. Joseph Hospital when he lost control and crashed into a tree in the 3700 block of North Sherman Boulevard, according to reports released Monday from the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office.

Both Riley and Smithdied from multiple blunt-force injuries, according to the medical examiner.

Smith was one of five people shot at a house party around 3:30 a.m. Sunday in the 4500 block of North28th Street.

The others struck by gunfire at the party were: a 29-year-old man, in critical condition; a 33-year-old man, who suffered serious injuries; and two women, ages 22 and 33, who were treated and released from the hospital, according to police.

The circumstances leading to the shooting are still under investigation, police said.

Emergency crews worked for 45 minutes to extract Riley and Smith from the vehicle, according to the medical examiner's reports. They were both pinned under the front dash.

The car had major damage, and investigators found more than 150 feet of skid marks on Sherman Boulevard leading to the tree.

Five minutes after the quintuple shooting involving Smith, a triple shooting occurreda little more than three miles away on Milwaukee's north side. A 32-year-old man died and two men, ages 22 and 47, were injured. Police are still looking for suspects.

The gunfire came amid aspate of violence over the weekendin Milwaukee. According to reports from police, four people died and 12 were injured in shootings on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Then, early Monday morning, a14-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound while sitting in a vehicle, Milwaukee police said.

The teen's injuries were not life-threatening, police said.

He was struck by gunfire about 1 a.m. Mondayin the 800 block of WestAtkinson Avenue and walked into a hospital for treatment, police said.

Although the circumstances leading up to the shooting are still under investigation, police said it does not appear the teen was the intended target.

About half an hour later, a 28-year-old Milwaukee man was shot in the2400 block of North 29th Street and suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

In a news release Monday, police also reported the shooting Saturday of a 21-year-old woman. She suffered injuries that were not life-threatening when a suspect shot her duringan argument about 1 a.m. in the 2900 block of WestHighland Boulevard, police said. They are looking for the suspect.

Homicides in Milwaukee are up 66% compared with this time last year, according to a city database. Contributing to the spike are a series of shootings in which multiple people died: at the Molson Coors brewery complex in February, a gunman killed five people then himself; at a home in April, prosecutors say a man killed five people including four teens.

At this time in 2019, Milwaukee had seen 38 of its 97 homicides for the year. The city has already recorded 68 homicides.

We should all be at a loss for words because there is excuse or explanation for the level of violence we are seeing in Milwaukee and across this county," said Reggie Moore, the director of Milwaukee's Office of Violence Prevention."There are too many guns in the hands of people with too much pain. Theres nothing more to be said. We need to invest and act on solutions.

Gun violence also devastated Chicago over the weekend. At least 106 people were shot,13 of them fatally, according to the Chicago Tribune. Five children were killed, including a 3-year-old boy.
