The best black-led and owned fashion and grooming brands to buy from, celebrate and support – British GQ

It would be a grave understatement to suggest that black culture has had anything but a profound impact on the global fashion and beauty industries since, well, time immemorial. In fact, according to the book How To Slay: Inspiration From The Queens And Kings Of Black Style by Constance CR White, the loosey-goosey flapper style of the 1920s allegedly came to the fore in part from the need to allow for vigorous movement after black teens introduced an energetic dance called the Charleston.

Elsewhere, African-American jazz musician Cab Calloway was instrumental in the popularisation of the baggy zoot suit, which dominated the wardrobes of men of all colours in the 1930s, while in the 1980s Dapper Dan used the term blackinise fashion to describe how he imported bootlegged fabrics to be used on luxury leather, thus creating his own pieces, which was then picked up by hip-hop and sneaker culture. Yet, despite being surrounded by black style, we often miss its beauty and innovation or fail to acknowledge it, says White. Style shaped by the African diaspora is ubiquitous in fashion today for people of all colours, races and creeds.

Today, black-owned American brands such as Pyer Moss and LaQuan Smith, among others, have become key proponents in bringing their respective African ancestries to the foreground, influencing other designers in their wake. And here in the UK the likes of Grace Wales Bonner who was awarded the Emerging Menswear Designer award at the British Fashion Awards in 2015 and focuses on Afro-Atlantic approaches (her coats have come emblazoned with Caribbean pearl, cowrie shell and bone beading on the back) is easily one of the best design talents the country has to offer.

The ugly truth, however, is that black-led businesses are all too often cast to the side in favour of white-owned equivalents. Case in point, the nonprofit organisation 15 Percent Pledge asking for major American retailers to pledge 15 per cent of their shelf space (a drop in the ocean, one would imagine) to overlooked black-owned businesses, as black people account for that percentage of that country's population.

Below, to help you do your bit for these brilliant businesses, we've outlined some of the best black-owned and led brands to support and celebrate right now.

Since launching his label in 2010, Queens-born African-American LaQuan Smith has become a major player on the NYC fashion scene. Smith spent his early years instructed by his grandmother who instilled a passion and skill for sewing and pattern making and today his men's and women's collections are super sexy, with fans as far spread as Lagos and as famous as Beyonc, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian West. laquansmith.com

If there was one bag that we wanted in 2019, it was Telfar's shopper. Liberian-American Telfar Clemens started the eponymous, unisex brand back in 2005 and had the support of friends such as Shayne Oliver, the founder of Hood By Air. Clemens gives classic products a subversive twist, playing with colours, graphics and silhouettes and the designer entered the 2017 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund competition and won, receiving the $400,000 prize. There is a strong community, as Telfar told Business Of Fashion last year, of black and brown people who support the brand, Oliver included, that has got it to where it is today. telfar.net

Pyer Moss was founded in 2013 as a men's and womenswear fashion label that focused on building a narrative around heritage and activism. Founded by Kerby Jean-Raymond, a Haitian-American fashion designer, after eleven years in the industry as a designer and pattern maker, Pyer Moss lends itself to using clothing to emphasise the political and social issues of the time and has gone on to collaborate with the likes of Reebok. pyermoss.com

Established by Grace Wales Bonner in 2014, Wales Bonner is one of the highlights on the London Fashion Week Men's calendar. With a hybrid of European and Afro-Atlantic approaches, which stem from her own ancestry, Bonner was the winner of the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund and has even gone on to collaborate with Dior for its Resort 2020 collection. Her collections embody the multidirectional female black-British gaze on masculinity and her clothing is injected with influences from the British Afro-Caribbean music scene, which she knows a lot about as her grandfather was Jamaican. walesbonner.net

Londoner Bianca Saunders' eponymous label draws heavily on her West-Indian heritage. Her Autumn/Winter 2018 collection titled Personal Politics focused on black male identities and challenging stereotypes of hypermasculinity, while her Autumn/Winter 2019 collection focused on the black male's sexual identity. Sharp, minimalist tailoring is juxtaposed with rich, draped fabrics, offering a hybrid between hypermasculinity and fluidity. biancasaunders.com

Martine Rose established her eponymous label in London in 2007 and it has evolved from a tightlyedited shirting collection to an internationally renowned and criticallyacclaimed brand and stands as one of the highlights on the LFWM schedule. Rose is inspired by her Jamaican-British heritage and her deep interest and personal involvement in the music and the different cultures of London and communitysits at the heart of thecompany (her shows have been held in spaces such as the covered markets of Tottenham and primary schools). She fuses together early 1990s-era rave and hip-hop culture with her familys Jamaican roots, in particular her grandparents journey as part of the Windrush generation. martine-rose.com

In 2009, the late Joe Casely-Hayford launched a new luxury menswear brand that took his surname and saw him join forces with his son, Charlie. It was the first time in high fashion when both father and son actively partnered at the creative helm and it fused Joes Savile Row expertise with Charlies younger outlook. Today, after Joes death in 2019, Charlie leads the creative front, producing menswear that has been picked up by the likes of The xx. casely-hayford.com

Samuel Ross, the designer and founder of A-Cold-Wall* grew up in Brixton in a working-classneighbourhoodand has Windrush heritage that he emphasises across his brand, through using design techniques such as embroidered African beads. A Virgil Abloh proteg, he regularly shows at LFWM and is heralded as one of the country's greatest design talents. a-cold-wall.com

Exploring his dual-ethnic heritage, Daley uses his eponymous label, which he began in 2013, to widely question and reflect on the notions of multiculturalism (being of Jamaican and Scottish descent) within British identity. He uses internationally recognised manufacturers to present collections which reference music culture; for instance, Daley worked with members of the UK contemporary jazz scene for his latest presentation. nicholasdaley.net

Founded by Nyakio Kamoche Grieco, a first-generation American of Kenyan descent, Nyakio Beauty isn't like a lot of 21st-century beauty brands that come as a result of mega Instagram influence or YouTube stardom and stems instead from personal travels. Forty-six-year-old mother of two, Grieco spent a lot of time travelling to Kenya to see her grandmother as a child and picked up the family's beauty secrets that later sparked her interest in skincare. Her grandfather was a medicine man and stories about him extracting oils from nature to treat the skin inspired the brand. Standout (and now cult) products include the Maracuja & Yangu Rescue Oil and the Manketti & Mafura Anti-Aging Oil. nyakio.com

Designed in the US by the designer and young African-American creative of the same name, Des Pierrot is a New York- and Los Angeles-based brand that has been worn by big rappers such as Famous Dex and Quavo. Consisting of handmade apparel that often comes emblazoned with the phrase Loverboy Club on it, Pierrot is definitely one to watch. despierrot.co

Frustrated by the lack of skin-tone choices to go with her ever-expanding wardrobe, Nubian Skin founder Ade Hassan decided it was time to do something different. Nubian Skin launched with an edited collection of lingerie and hosiery to provide the essential underwear needs of women of colour and now has launched men's underwear. nubianskin.com

Pholk Beauty is a natural skincare brand inspired by the folk beauty of the African diaspora and is the brainchild of Niambi Cacchioli, who wanted to make good skincare more affordable for women of colour. The brand is vegan and uses widely sourced ingredients, such as cold-pressed hibiscus oil sourced from Senegal, Ghanaian moringa and turmeric from Jamaica. pholkbeauty.com

Founded in 2010, Maki Oh originally started as a womenswear brand, but in 2019 it delved headfirst into the menswear game. Formed by Amaka Osakwe in Lagos, Nigeria, it has a global standing and shows during New York Fashion Week. Osakwe blends African craftsmanship, for instance adire, the Nigerian cloth dyeing process, with a European silhouette. makioh.com

Research Roundup: Emerging Viral Diseases and More – BioSpace

Every week there are numerous scientific studies published. Heres a look at some of the more interesting ones.

More Worries About Emerging Viral Diseases

If the current COVID-19 pandemic is teaching the world anything, its that viral diseases can be extremely dangerous and disruptive. Researchers with the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus released a new study calling attention to the emergence of mosquito-borne viral outbreaks in West Africa, including dengue (DNV), chikungunya (CHIKV) and Zika (ZIKV) viruses. They published their research in Acta Tropica.

The study reviewed 50 years of literature on arboviruses in West Africa. The goal was to define evidence of DENV, ZIKV and CHIKV and the distribution of their Aedes mosquito vectors in the region. They found strong evidence that transmission of these diseases is occurring in urban areas of West Africa, which is distinct from the rural transmission of yellow fever virus that has been historically present in the region. They found evidence that the epidemiology of arboviral disease in West Africa has shifted and that rapid urbanization and climate change could increase risk of outbreaks in the future.

Large arboviral outbreaks will occur around the world, said Elizabeth Carlton, assistant professor of environmental and occupational health at the Colorado School of Public Health and co-author of the study. Building awareness and surveillance capacity before the outbreaks occur can help detect outbreaks early and enable prompt and effective response to reduce health impacts.

Research lead Andrea Buchwald, a postdoctoral fellow, said, Emerging viruses are at the forefront of everyones attention due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It has underscored the importance of preparing for and preventing large viral outbreaks that can have massive public health and economic consequences. We hope our research will prompt the development of early warning systems and adoption of control measures to prevent infectious outbreaks in West Africa. This will greatly impact the spread and severity of future outbreaks.

Vaccine Design Leveraging Artificial Proteins

Investigators at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in France developed a computational approach to create artificial proteins, which they believe could be used to create safer and more effective vaccines. They note that when vaccines dont work, theres a tendency to think its because the antibodies produced arent protective, but usually its because the immune system is making the wrong type of antibodies. The new method was able to design artificial proteins that could precisely instruct the bodys immune system which antibodies to produce.

New Genetic Link for NASH Identified

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis is a fatty liver disease similar to cirrhosis of the liver but in people who drink little or no alcohol. Researchers at German Diabetes Center, German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbrucke (DlfE), and Helmholtz Zentrum Munchen, discovered new genes that play a role in fatty liver disease. The genes are IRGM, Ifgga2 and Ifgga4. They are responsible for the production of regulatory proteins of the family of immunity-related GTPases that counteract fat accumulation in the liver. A genetic variation causes formation of fewer of these proteins.

University of Waterloo researchers studying the 3D structure of the COVID-19 protein believe a specific class of diabetes drugs could potentially be used to treat COVID-19. The study has not yet been peer-reviewed, but they found evidence that dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors (DPP4 inhibitors) could bind to the protein. They are continuing research and hope to scale up to clinical trials. Common DPP4 inhibitors include AstraZenecas Onglyza (saxagliptin), Mercks Januvia (sitagliptin), Takedas Nesina (alogliptin) and Boehringer Ingelheims Tradjenta (linagliptin).

How Triglyceride is Made

Triglycerides are a type of dietary fat that are associated with increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity and fatty liver disease. Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine identified a 3D structure and mode of action of an enzyme, acylglycerol O-acyltransferase-1 (DGAT1) that synthesizes triglycerides. It is also required for human dietary fat absorption and storage. DGAT1 is a known target for treating diabetes and metabolic diseases, so understanding the mechanism of action may lead to better interventions. The research was published in the journal Nature.

DGAT1 is a particularly interesting enzyme because it synthesizes triglycerides, which are the main component of hard fat, the type of fat usually found in the belly or midsection in our body, said co-corresponding author Ming Zhou, Ruth McLean Bowman Bowers Professor in Biochemistry in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Baylor. Triglycerides also are part of the particles that transport cholesterol high-density lipoproteins (HDL, or good cholesterol), and low-density and very-low-density lipoproteins (LDL and VLDLD, or bad cholesterols). Learning to regulate this enzyme can help regulate fat synthesis and potentially manage related conditions.

Accumulated Neuron Damage as We Age

Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) identified an enzyme called HDAC1 that is critical for repairing age-related DNA damage in genes associated with memory and cognition. In Alzheimers patients, as well as in normally aging adults, HDAC1 is often found in lower amounts. Their research suggests that restoring the enzyme could have benefits for both groups. The research was published in the journal Nature Communications.

It seems that HDAX1 is really an anti-aging molecule, said Li-Huei Tsai, director of MITs Picower Institute for Learning and Memory, and senior author of the research. I think this is a very broadly applicable basic biology finding, because nearly all of the human neurodegenerative diseases only happen during aging. I would speculate that activating HDAC1 is beneficial in many conditions.

In 2013, the same group published two papers linking HDAC1 to DNA repair in brain cells. The new research studied what happens when HDAC1-mediated repair didnt happen. They worked with mice engineered to not produce HDAC1 in neurons and another type of brain cell, astrocytes. At first there was no noticeable difference in DNA damage levels or behavior, but as the mice aged, DNA damage began to accumulate in the HDAC1-deficient mice and lost some of their brain plasticity and problems in memory and spatial navigation. The loss of HDAC1 was associated with a specific type of DNA damage called 8-oxo-guanine lesions.

Salt cave and infrared sauna therapy opening in Casper this summer – Oil City News

(Shutterstock)

CASPER, Wyo Casper residents looking to address a range of health issues with alternative medicine will soon be able to try halothearpy (salt cave) and infrared (IR) light therapy. According to co-owner Cassandra Baker, Balanced Healing Salt and Sauna is expected to open by August in a business suite on South Beech Street.

According to Baker, the halotherapy booth filtrates fine particles of Himalayan salt into the air. A study in the Journal of Medicine and Life found that halotherapy triggered anti-allergic mechanisms in patients with chronic respiratory symptoms, decreasing inflammatory processes.

Dr. Norman Edelman, Senior Scientific Advisor to the American Lung Association, said, When fine salt particles are inhaled, they will fall on the airway linings and draw water into the airway, thinning the mucus and making it easier to raise, thus making people feel better.

Article continues below...

Baker purchased the infrared light booth from a company called Sunlighten. The mPulse model uses near-, mid-, and far-range infrared light frequencies in various combinations to penetrate tissues at varying depths. Baker said there would be programs to address detoxification, skin rejuvenation, weight loss, anti-aging, pain relief, and cardiovascular health.

A study by the University of Eastern Finland evaluated the effect of sauna on the risk of hypertension in 1,621 middle-aged men over an average 22 year span. They found a 24% decrease in hypertension among men with a sauna frequency of 2-3 times a week, and a decrease of 46% among men who had a sauna 4-7 times a week.

Baker said both therapies will likely be augmented with aromatherapy.

HaloBaker and co-owner Tina Nations (who will handle the halothearpy side of the business) met at Theraexpressions Meditation LLC,. Both had spoken to the yoga studios owner, Candace Lopez, about their interest in opening spas with the respective technologies. Lopez suggested Baker and Nations combine forces.

Baker said everything aligned when the business space below Theraexpressions opened up And then we were off to the races, Baker said. She signed the lease June 1.

She said infrared sauna sessions run 30-40 minutes and the booth can accommodate 2 people. Baker said initial price points for the salt cave will be $20 for 20 minutes, and 30-40 minute sessions in the infrared sauna will run $30. She is also looking at options for membership and referral pricing.

Other studies have shown benefits in collagen production, white blood cell count, and production of pain relieving anti-inflammatory compounds like cortisol.

Baker, associate director of Wyoming Food for Thought, began her studies of alternative medicine 8 years ago to address skin issues and mood imbalances. She said she wasnt getting the answers she was looking for from her traditional doctors. I started eating healthier, I cut out a lot of sugar I started trying to be more active and avoiding putting processed food into my body, and I started feeling better.

Baker said alternative medicine has taken a while to catch up in the community at large, but that the COVID-19 pandemic has gotten people more interested in natural remedies.

She said the therapies could be useful for immunocompromised or wheelchair-bound individuals who arent able to use gyms or participate in more active forms of wellness.

Baker is also seeking accreditation in Ayruvedic medicine, an Eastern modality that addresses health characteristics of individuals based on 3 distinct body-types.

IHS Pets: Bringing Cell And Gene Therapy To Cats, Dogs & Horses – Anti Aging News

Integrated Health System is bringing cell and gene therapy to cats, dogs, and horses. Recently IHS Pets has helped a paralyzed dog with a spinal cord injury to walk again after it was treated with experimental PRP and prolotherapy. Click here to see the video.

Telomeres

Aging is the root of virtually every complex noncommunicable disease in humans and animals. Telomeres are the protective end caps on the ends of our chromosomes, they are as important for the health of both humans and our pets, and they play roles in longevity.

One of the contributing factors in the lifespan in dog breeds is telomere length. As in humans researchers have found that telomere length is a strong predictor of average life span among 15 different breeds consistent with telomeres playing a role in life span determination. Dogs lose telomeric DNA ~10-fold faster than humans, which is similar to the ratio of average life spans between these species. As such telomerase therapy may be beneficial to pets as well as their human caretakers.

Telomerase gene therapy has been shown to extend lifespan in animals, this therapy may help to increase bone mineral density, improve motor performance, improve metabolism, and improve brain function.

Follistatin

The loss of muscle mass with age is just as problematic for animals as it is to humans; in cats for instance a study showed that for each 100g loss of lean body mass increased the risk of death by 20%. This is typically accompanied by frailty, and it is a contributing factor to metabolic syndrome, diabetes, heart disease, and overall mortality.

Diet and exercise have been shown to pay key roles in keeping pets healthy, but the loss of muscle mass is unavoidable without an effective intervention. Enter follistatin: myostatin blocks muscle growth, when it is inhibited then follistatin is able to let muscles grow freely to stop them from wasting away.

Follistatin gene therapy has been shown to be safe and effective in animals, this therapy may help to protect against frailty, increase muscle density, increase strength, and increase endurance.

Klotho: The Queen of Anti-Aging Proteins

1 in 3 cats will suffer from renal disease, but these numbers are under scrutiny with some suggesting that estimate may be too conservative. Chronic kidney failure can occur gradually over months or years, and it is one of the most common conditions affecting older cats with most cases progressing over time worsening the disease.

Klotho is known to play a significant role in the development of chronic kidney disease, and researchers are now turning to its broader role in the anging process as a whole; such as induces expression with gene therapy in mice has been shown to extend lifespan by targeting many of the same pathways as caloric restriction. Blocking Klotho has been shown to cause premature aging.

Klotho also helps to protect the brain, and contributes to more differences in intelligence than any one single gene. Research from the University of California has shown it to protect the brains of mice and improve brain function within 4 hours; and this result included young mice, old mice, and those that were models of Alzheimers disease.

In addition Klotho also plays a critical role in the inflammaging process. Inflammaging is the long term result of the chronic physiological stimulation of the innate immune system which can become damaging during the aging process.

Circulating levels of Kloto decreases with age, this decrease is associated with an increased risk of age related disease. Gene therapy with Klotho has been shown to increase lifespan in animal models, and it may improve kidney function, brain function, clear damage caused by oxidative stress, and protect against cardiovascular disease.

With the remarkable progress being made in genetics, gene therapy may play increasingly prominent and transformative roles in medicine for both humans and animals due to the potential to treat diseases and congenital disorders.

Pets can be an important part of life, they calm us, make us laugh, and create a bond of unconditional love. The company does note that all therapies are experimental, they are not approved by any regulatory body, and they make no claims that outcomes will be positive or beneficial.

IHS Pets is the veterinary wing of Integrated Health Systems, BioViva Sciences exclusive partner. IHS connects with doctors and patients who are interested in the power of gene therapy to pave the way to healthy aging and longevity.

It’s great to grow old: Dal Health CRC studying physical activity, movement and aging – Dal News

Dr. Olga Theou has been with the School of Physiotherapy as a Canadian Research Chair since July 2019 studying aging and what contributes to some people aging better than others.

Dr. Theou started her education in her native country Greece at Aristotle University, studying Physical Education and Sport Science. She then moved to California to complete a Masters in Kinesiology with focus on Aging (Gerokinesiology) at California State University Fullerton. After that, she completed her PhD in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at Western University. Following her PhD, Dr. Theou did a year of postdoc work at UBC Okanagan before coming to Dalhousie to do a postdoc in Geriatric Medicine and receiving a faculty appointment, then moving over to Physiotherapy where she received her CRC.

Dr. Theou wasnt always planning on working in aging she used to work with athletes but an exercise program for older adults at California State University Fullerton showed her how beneficial exercise was for that population.

With athletes youre trying to improve 10 percent of their skills, youre trying to make them slightly better to have a better performance. Then you realize you have to have the same approach when it comes to older adults, but it could be lifechanging. Someone could have mobility problems, but now they can walk up the stairs in their house.

When I started seeing how grateful they are, that was the moment that I realized thats what I want to do.

Dr. Theou says she doesnt look at aging as something for older people, its something that happens across your lifetime, and is important to start thinking about in your 20s.

Younger people dont think it applies to them yet. But after the age of 30, you start to see it, you say Im not as I used to be 10 years ago. From a nutrition level, sleep level, active level, movement level, everyone sees it, they feel like they arent as they used to be.

Dr. Theou says aging isnt just things like arthritis, its energy levels and a persons level of pain in their body.

Its when you get out of bed and you groan; thats what we are investigating. What made you age faster or slower or at a normal place?

Dr. Theou says people view it as normal so they dont look for ways to improve, but it doesnt have to be normal, especially given that life expectancy is longer than before. She says people need to start with a good baseline.

Dr. Theou says in her research she has found a lot of misinformation about what people need to do to grow older.

We spend so much energy to live longer, but we dont want to grow old. We want to live until were 80 but we dont want to look 80.

She says people have an obsession with youthfulness, pointing to all of the anti-aging products, and says there is a lot of ageism around it.

Dr. Theou says growing old is something to celebrate.

People worked really hard to grow older and have a longer life expectancy. Dont be afraid to grow old, its great to grow old.

Dr. Theou says movement is so important in aging.

Movement is factorial. If you have a heart problem, you take a pill and it fixes your heart. Movement fixes everything. Your bones, your heart, your brain, it affects all the systems basically.

She says the problem is that exercise is seen as an intervention, when it should be the gold standard integrated into our healthcare.

Unfortunately, Dr. Theou says, people associate movement with the gym and lifting weights, which can feel intimidating, but any movement matters.

We have to get people thinking about how to exercise in a way they want to. Some people like to walk or run; some people like to play sports. It should be social and joyful. We have to change it up and respect peoples wishes.

She says walking to get your mail, doing active housework, taking the stairs even just five extra minutes of movement is beneficial.

People might think they are too old to get that movement in, but Dr. Theou says an 80 year old is going to get a lot more benefits from a short walk than a 20 year old will. The younger and fitter you are, the more challenging your movement should be.

Dr. Theou says a major hurdle in getting moving is that our lives are set up to be about sedentary, with many opportunities to be sitting or idle.

Its almost like you have to fight it. Unless you have an occupation thats very active, you have to fight the system and the environment to be active.

She says adding in some movement, even with chronic health conditions, can improve a persons health in a major way.

If youre exercising and active with health conditions, you are very close to whats considered normal aging. For example, if you have diabetes or high heart pressure, you can have an extremely high quality of life if you are exercising.

Dr. Theou says there are so many opportunities to collaborate around aging.

Thats the reason I wanted to be a CRC in the first place, my plan was to address aging in an interdisciplinary way, but we are still working in silos in health care.

She says being in the Faculty of Health and having strong connections to the Faculty of Medicine and the Nova Scotia Health Authority will hopefully give her the opportunity to bring people together from different disciplines.

Dr. Theou says everyone knows we need to exercise, but not everyone is doing it, and healthcare professionals play a big role in letting people know their options.

Its everyones responsibility not just physiotherapists in a clinical setting. We need to make it much clearer there is a solution, whether you choose to use it or not, and there are alternates that would fit their lifestyle.

Dr. Theou is a co-Principal Investigator (with Dr. Kenneth Rockwood) of a project entitled Understanding how grades of frailty affect the evolution of COVID which is funded by the Nova Scotia COVID-19 Health Research Coalition.

The purpose of this study is to increase understanding of how frailty affects various key points in the evolution of COVID-19. Their motivation is the duty to make sure that clinical decisions based on the grade of frailty can be justified or modified based on evidence.

The medical Adele reveals the secret to her weight loss: it is not just exercise – Play Crazy Game

That Adele has lost over 50 pounds in the last few months is one of the reasons in Dominique Fradin-Read. The degree in preventative medicine and anti-aging, and with a university degree in nutrition, he had the singer made a radical change which, until now, prevented millions of people from all over the world guessing, as no one knew how it had been accomplished.

Now, the doctor revealed what is your trick to losing weight and made it clear that this is not sport. Dominique Fradin-Read he insists that it is not only exercise, but the process has a lot to do with mood and mental health.

Dominique Fradin-Read, explained to US Weekly that weight loss is not only exercisebut the sport should be a part of a transformation of the broader lifestyle of the person. That is why, ensures that the mental health and well-being of those who want to lose weight are just as important as the diet and physical exercise.

The first thing I tell my patients is that, in regards to weight loss, diet and exercise alone will not be sufficient in the majority of cases. says.

Fradin-Read believes that it is vital to look at each patient from a global point of view: Many patients who come to us tried to lose weight previously, but did not succeed and it was recovered, and even more. For successful weight loss and sustainable, we must look at the person in whole and not just address the weight separately.

That is why, subjected each patient to a thorough study: Analyze the metabolic function: how the patient is beginning to develop insulin resistance? We observed the hormone, such an important part of the weight gain in the menopause. We investigated the levels of thyroid and cortisol.

And continues: We have in mind the habits: why do most of us behave well all day and we crashed for the night? We evaluate the stress and sleep. We talk about mood and mental health. When addressing all of these elements, then we can start a custom diet and to recommend the exercise as needed, Then work.

Fradin-Read does not want to speak to you promptly of Adele, because he has moral and legal obligations to protect the privacy of all patients, both mine as others. For that reason, I can not confirm nor deny any information, but yes, I like to talk about my work as a health and various treatments, therapies, products and services offered by my practice, but do not provide information about specific individuals.

I combine all the tools and methods in our therapeutic arsenal, starting with approaches that are more natural and changes in lifestyle, vitamins / supplements, to recommend peptides, rebalance hormones, and finally prescribe medications that are appropriate for each patient, she says.

According to the news site El confidencial, one of the tips that he shares with all his patients is to follow the mediterranean diet, as well as the healthy menus suggested by the chef, Michel Gurard: the objective is to create balanced meals and customized for each client.

The doctor develops a method for visual to make all of you to imagine a plate divided into several parts: green vegetables should occupy approximately two-thirds of the plate; protein-good source of one-third and the last part is reserved to the carbs. And, in addition, you can add healthy fats, such as olive oil, avocado or nuts.

Fradin-Read also gives preponderance to that the notion of the pleasure of eating is at the base of a successful diet in the long term. For this reason, it is important to create a personalized diet for each person and that is not always the same: we are All different when it comes to our weight and, therefore, the same diet that works for one person might not work at another; it may even be that not even serve for the same person during all his life.

Antioxidant Foods That Improve Your Health – Newsmax

Antioxidants are compounds critical to the production of energy and themaintenance of health and youth. Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, author of the book From Fatigued to Fantastic! says that although oxygen is necessary for survival, too much of it is toxic.

Using oxygen to create energy in our bodies results in the production of toxic free radicals which set up ongoing, self-sustaining chain reactions of molecular damage, he explains. Doctors who specialize in anti-aging medicine use antioxidants as well as other key tools like bioidentical hormones to keep their patients healthier longer by preventing free radical damage.

The best way to obtain antioxidants is through food, says noted sports medicine physician Dr. Gabe Mirkin. "Eating fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes will help you get the intake of antioxidants you need."

New Aging Research Reveals Key to Long, Healthy Life

Here are 10 foods chock full of the good stuff:

1. Dark Chocolate. Teitelbaum says that eating dark chocolate is a fun way to get antioxidants. According to the results of a study conducted at Cornell University, the concentration of cancer-fighting antioxidants in hot cocoa was significantly higher than in red wine, green tea, or black tea.

2. Artichokes. This tasty veggie has a long history of healing properties and is a great source of dietary fiber, minerals, and antioxidants. They are especially rich in the antioxidant known as chlorogenic acid, which may reduce the risk of certain cancers, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.

3. Beets. These veggies are a great source of fiber, potassium, iron, folate, and antioxidants. Several test-tube studies have shown that beets lower the risk of certain cancers in the colon and digestive tract thanks to a group of antioxidant compounds called betalains. Betalains have also been linked to reducing inflammation and relieving arthritis pain.

4. Pecans. Nuts are a good source of healthy fats and minerals, and also contain a high amount of antioxidants, says Mirkin. One study found that people who consumed 20 percent of their total calories from pecans experienced significantly increased blood antioxidant levels.

5. Spinach. This nutritionally dense but very low calorie vegetable is loaded with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Its a great source of lutein and zeaxanthin, two antioxidants that help protect your eyes from UV damage.

6. Tomatoes. The health benefits of tomatoes include eye care, good stomach health, and reduced blood pressure. This popular fruit, often mistaken for a veggie, also includes a number of antioxidants that have been proven to fight different forms of cancer, according to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Tomatoes contain lycopene, an antioxidant that is highly effective in fighting cancer-causing free radicals. Remarkably, the health benefits even can be obtained from processed tomato products like ketchup.

Heart Surgeon's Secret to Healthy Blood Pressure

7. Beans. These legumes are inexpensive and healthy while being incredibly rich in fiber, says Mirkin. They are also one of the best plant sources of antioxidants. One of these is called kaempferol, which has been linked to anti-cancer benefits.

8. Kale. This hearty green vegetable is one of the most nutritious in the plant world, says Mirkin. Its rich in vitamins A, K, and C as well as antioxidants. The red-leafed variety of kale contains higher levels of these antioxidants, which is why nutrition experts advise us to eat a rainbow diet foods rich in a variety of colors.

9. Strawberries. These are among the most popular berries on the planet. They also contain anthocyanins, which help reduce the risk of heart disease. The brighter the red, the higher the amount of anthocyanins.

10. Blueberries. While eating large amounts of sugary fruit is not recommended for those with diabetes, blueberries are low in calories and sugar but packed with antioxidants. Animal studies have shown that blueberries may stave off cognitive decline. In addition, the anthocyanins in blueberries have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering LDL cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

Confusion reigns over whether Oregonians can receive Botox and other beauty treatments during the COVID-19 pa – OregonLive

Its still not clear whether Gov. Kate Brown will allow some beauty treatments to resume as part of her decision to allow medical offices to restart elective procedures as early as Friday after more than a monthlong shutdown to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus.

After several days of questioning from The Oregonian/OregonLive, the governors office said Brown didnt intend to allow aesthetician services, medical spas, facial spas, and non-medical massage services to reopen.

But how about doctors or nurse practitioners who provide medical beauty services such as wrinkle reduction?

Spokeswoman Liz Merah said to stay tuned. The state might have additional guidance on opening day, she said.

In a sampling by The Oregonian/OregonLive, some owners believed they werent allowed to reopen, while others were adamant that the governor had given their industry permission to restart anti-aging or aesthetic procedures meant to improve the appearance of the skin or body.

Neighboring governors also have announced the loosening of some restrictions on the medical industry, albeit on a more limited basis than in Oregon.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said last week that some elective or delayed surgeries -- such as those for cancer or heart problems -- can resume. But Newsom specified cosmetic surgeries are still barred for the time being.

Washingtons Gov. Jay Inslee on Wednesday clarified a previous order restricting nonurgent procedures. He gave health care providers more leeway to resume some of the procedures if delaying them would significantly harm the patient. Inslees direction appears to offer no wiggle room for Botox businesses or other medical spas to reopen.

The confusion in Oregon arose when Brown announced last week that elective, non-urgent medical and dental procedures could restart but didnt offer a specific list of businesses.

She and Dr. Dana Hargunani, the Oregon Health Authoritys chief medical officer, cited examples instead -- including knee surgeries, fertility treatments, dental cleanings, cancer biopsies and hip replacements.

When a reporter asked Hargunani whether cosmetic procedures would be allowed, Hargunani didnt answer directly yes or no. Instead, she left the door open, saying: We are not telling providers exactly what they can or cannot do. But we know that those that are most urgent and necessary are going to be the first on the list.

That might have looked like a green light to many.

Aesthetic Medicine run by Dr. Jerry Darm -- one of the most recognizable faces in Oregons medical beauty industry -- announced his Lake Oswego office will start seeing customers again Monday.

We are reopening May 4th!!!!! Darms Facebook page reads. We are so excited to see our patients and have our staff back. There will be new guidelines for scheduling an appointment but we are feeling very blessed.

The post was met with a flurry of likes and comments such as Awesome!!!! I can wait to see you again and Thats so good to hear the good news.

Darm and the operators of several other medical beauty businesses contacted by the newsroom didnt return messages asking for details about safety protocols and the reason for their decisions to reopen. That includes Key Laser Institute for Cosmetic Regenerative Medicine in outer Southwest Portland, which posted on its Facebook page that its gearing up to see patients again.

Key Laser Institute for Cosmetic Regenerative Medicine's Facebook Post April 27, 2020. (Facebook screenshot)

Some others said its far too soon. Theyre concerned that meager testing means the state doesnt have a handle on the true scope of the problem or the knowledge needed to contain the virus spread through contact tracing.

While Oregon has by far a lower number of known cases and deaths than some other states -- 2,510 positive tests and 103 deaths it also has tested only about one in every 100 residents.

Coronavirus in Oregon: Latest news | Live map tracker |Text alerts | Newsletter

Debora Masten, a certified advanced esthetician in Salem, said she wont start offering customers chemical peels, laser hair removals and other treatments Friday because she doesnt think her services are necessary at this stage in the pandemic.

Its supposed to be stuff you cant put off, Masten said. Im anxious to get open again, too, but I think we have to try as best we can to protect the public.

Masten also noted that like many others who perform a range of treatments, shes not a doctor or nurse practitioner and the governor hasnt given her the OK. Thats even though she sees others who also arent medical professionals gearing up to reopen.

Sharon Griffin, a naturopathic doctor who operates Plush Botox Bar in Northeast Portland, wrote the governor this week urging her to end the confusion.

She asked Brown to specifically require the medical beauty industry to remain shuttered, like so many other businesses ranging from clothing stores to hair salons to dine-in restaurants.

No one really needs Botox in May, but as things stand, theyre gonna get it and possibly a whole lot more in the bargain, Griffin wrote.

She said in an interview that she supports restarting necessary procedures, like her husbands CT scan scheduled next week to diagnose a medical problem.

But she has decided to hold off reopening her own business until at least June 1 to see how the spread of the disease continues to play out, even as she sees competitors around her planning to reopen.

Griffin said shes passionate about what she does -- injectables such as Botox and lip fillers -- but doesnt want to risk the health of customers for procedures that arent life or death matters.

Nobody will die from a wrinkle, Griffin said.
