Chili Pepper and Marijuana Soothe Gut Inflammation – Anti Aging News

Researchers at the University of Connecticut have discovered a chemical compound that could lead to new treatments for diabetes and gastrointestinal conditions. The research team, led by Professor of Immunology and Medicine Pramod Srivastava from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, published their official findings in the April 24 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal.

Anandamide Production

Capsaicin is a chemical compound contained in spicy chili peppers. This chemical is responsible for the sensation of heat felt when they are consumed. The chemical binds to brain receptors, called TPRV1 receptors, to signal the sensation of heat from the tongue to the brain. TPRV1 receptors are also found in the gastrointestinal tract.

As part of their research, the team administered capsaicin to lab mice. These mice were found to have less inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. Some mice who previously showed signs of Type 1 diabetes showed normal blood sugar levels after the trials.

The results are contributed to the capsaicin binding with TPRV1 receptors in the gastrointestinal tract. The binding process prompts the receptors to produce the chemical anandamide. This chemical soothes and relaxes the gastrointestinal tract. Researchers could repeat their original results by feeding anandamide directly to the lab mice, rather than using chili peppers.

Researchers do not fully understand how the chemical causes the immune system and brain to interact.

Anandamide and cannabinoids are chemically similar. When a person consumes marijuana, anandamide receptors in the brain react to the presence of cannabinoids. This produces feelings of euphoria and relaxation, or a high. Marijuana consumption causes anandamide production.

Anandamide and the Gastrointestinal Tract

While the team has not uncovered the mechanism that allows the brain to communicate with the immune system, they do understand how it helps heal the gastrointestinal tract.

There are other receptors that react to anandamide. These signal the production of immune cells called macrophages. These cells reduce inflammation. Higher anandamide levels correlate with higher macrophage presence, which can mean a significant reduction in inflammation. Anandamide and macrophage production can positively affect conditions in the esophagus, stomach, and pancreas.

Current trials are testing the effect of anandamide on conditions affecting the lower gastrointestinal tract, such as colitis.

Future Trials

Current federal marijuana regulations make clinical trials using human subjects difficult. Researchers are hoping to partner with the state of Colorado to obtain statistics on the effect of edible marijuana on colitis sufferers. That evidence could support the use of medicinal marijuana to treat severe gastrointestinal disorders.

Future research will focus on finding the specific molecular pathway anandamide uses to send signals between the stomach and the brain. The team is also investigating how anandamide reacts with other receptors, and the functions they serve.

Sculpsure is new for fat reduction – Palm Beach Post

Question: Are there any new technologies for fat reduction?

Answer: It is interesting to watch technology as it continues to evolve. Many of my patients are up to date with what is trending in aesthetic technology. There is a new exciting technology that melts and tightens skin simultaneous without downtime. Coolsculpting has been a good fat reduction treatment for many of my patients. It is a way to noninvasively destroy fat cells by freezing fat. However it takes about one hour per area and, depending on the patient, could take up to four or six hours in a day! Also, the cost of Coolsculpting is pretty much equivalent to liposuction.

A newer technology has just been FDA-approved for the same application of destroying fat cells non-invasively, but it uses heat. Its called SculpSure by Cynosure. SculpSure is a laser device that uses the same wavelength as Smart Lipo.

It targets fat cells and destroys them without any incisions. Unlike Coolsculpting, Sculpsure takes less time, the treatment areas are much larger and there is no downtime. One treatment takes only 25 minutes and there have been no reported side effects.

The treatments applicators are placed on the skin and a balance of laser wavelength with cold is projected to the fat layer, making it hot enough to achieve the right temperatures to destroy fat cells, but cold enough to be comfortable. The destroyed cells are disposed of by the bodys lymphatic system.

The results are seen in six to eight weeks and most people require just one treatment. Another game-changing advantage: The laser tightens skin. So in summary, Sculpsure is less expensive, takes less time and tightens skin very effectively.

Daniela Dadurian, M.D., specializes in anti-aging medicine and is an expert in non-surgical body-contouring techniques. She received her medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine and has traveled the world researching the safest and latest technologies on the market.

Photos of skeletal lions at zoo spark massive outrage: ‘Seeing these animals … made my blood boil’ – Yahoo Lifestyle

UPDATE:As of late Thursday morning, the GoFundMe page to benefit the lions has finally been approved.

Original story:

Warning: Some of these images may be upsetting

Photos of a pack of emaciated lions at a zoo in Khartoum, Sudan, have sparked worldwide outrage, along with an online campaign to rescue them.

The condition of the sickly lions, which are currently being held in cages at Khartoum's Al-Qureshi Park, was first brought to light by Sudanese national Osman Salih, who spotted the creatures while walking by the zoo over the weekend and said seeing their condition "made my blood boil."

Salih later wrote on Facebook that he contacted zoo administrators, who informed him that wildlife police were the ones responsible for the care of the lions, which has reportedly gone weeks without food or medicine.

"The park holds the wildlife police directly responsible for the deteriorating condition of the lions, and stated that the income of the park for a month is not enough to feed one lion for a week," Salih claimed.

"We have consulted a number of veterinarians and wildlife specialists on the topic of treatment, which requires effort and follow-up to the health conditions of the lions, and there is a group of young people inside and outside the country who have the desire to provide assistance," he continued. "The issue is not simply food but most importantly the animals need detailed and special treatment to rid them of infections and issues probably brought about from infested meat and poor diet."

The heartbreaking post, which spawned the hashtag, #SudanAnimalRescue, has since been shared more than 500 times and covered by multiple media outlets.

Photos from the zoo:

Park officials and veterinarians responding to the public outcry surrounding the situation told the AFP that the animals' condition had deteriorated over the past few weeks, in part due to Sudan's worsening economic crisis.

"Food is not always available, so often we buy it from our own money to feed them," said Essamelddine Hajjar, a manager at Al-Qureshi park, which is run by Khartoum municipality and partly funded by private donors.

Although Salih said he has had many parties reach out to him wanting to help, he is still trying to set up a proper way to allow social media users to donate to the lions' plight after his GoFundMe page was apparently shut down due to U.S. government restrictions.

Sadly, one of the sick lionesses died on Jan. 20, despite all efforts being made to save her. Salih and local parties are still working hard to ensure the rest of the animals make full recoveries.

On Jan. 20, one of the other lionesses made a huge stride when she was able to eat minced meat brought to her enclosure by rescuers.

"Best video of the day," Salih captioned a clip of the lion'sprogress.

Kris Jenner Just Revealed Which One of Her Daughters Will Be the Next to Have a Baby – Yahoo Lifestyle

From Cosmopolitan

If it's something Kris Jenner loves talking about, it's about her childrenspecifically, her daughters (sorry, Rob). So when Kris appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show today, of course she jumped at the opportunity to talk about her prized girlsKim, Kourtney, and Khlo Kardashian, as well as Kendall and Kylie Jenner. Oh, and she spilled some tea about Keeping Up With the Kardashians, of course.

Ellen put Kris up for a game of "Keeping Up With the Blank," in which Kris has to finish sentences pertaining to her life and her kids, which naturally, provided us with some very illuminating answers. When asked who her favorite daughter was, Kris clammed up and explained that her fave daughter of the day* is Khlo. She also revealed that Kylie never answers her calls (Kylie has an entire cosmetics empire to run, can't blame her), LOL.

But here's where things got serious, y'all: Ellen then asked Kris to fill in the blank for "My next grandchild will come from," and Kris gave a rather interesting prediction. Her answer? "Kourtney, or maybe Kylie. Maybe Kendall!"

If you're scratching your head and thinking, Wait, but aren't Kylie and Travis Scott still broken up?, don't worryKris backtracked and said "I don't know if they're back together. They're just great co-parenters." Niiiiice save, Kris. As for Kourtney...does this mean she'll possibly have a baby with her boyfriend, Younes Bendjima? IDK, but Kris jumped and said Kourt's name first and fast, which is very sus.

Speaking of Kourt, Kris gave an update about where Kourtney stands with filming KUWTK. Look like she's on board (for now, anyway) and took some time to step back from the camera. "She's filming again. I think she just needed a little bit of a break. You know how we all hit a tipping point? And she hit a wall and she was frustrated," Kris said. "She felt under appreciated that her sisters didn't understand her boundaries. So I think after taking a little bit of time off, she's seen the light."

Welp, can't wait to see how Kris' answers for the baby question trickles in to the upcoming season of KUWTK!

People are losing their minds over photos of John C. Reilly’s hot son: ‘Biology is wild’ – Yahoo Lifestyle

This is John C. Reilly you may know him from any one of his myriad acting credits, including cult hits like Talladega Nights and Step Brothers.

Credit: AP

And this beautiful boy is his son, Leo Reilly.

Although Leo has been forging a successful career for himself as a model, musician and TikTok star seriously, hes amassed over 700K followers on the platform for years, he went insanely viral this week after HuffPost senior culture writer Zeba Bay tweeted out a photo of him and his famous father, noting, so, the young man on the right is John C. Reillys son.

Her comparison positively lit up on Twitter, racking up more than 14,000 likes and launching thousands of comments from apparently thirsty Twitter users.

Some simply could not even comprehend how the two were related.

I need to see the mother, one user wrote. Her genes did what they had to do.

Wow, mommas genes were up against a lot, but they persevered! joked another.

thought this was an Internet Joke but after 20 seconds of research it turns out that loveleo is indeed John C Reillys son, added another.

Leo, 22, is the oldest son of John C. Reilley and his wife, film producer Alison Dickey and yes, it seems he bears more resemblance to his mother than the Chicago actor.

According to IndieWire, the pair met while Dickey was working as Sean Penns assistant on the set of Casualties of War in 1989, which marked Reillys screen debut.

They have been married since 1992 and share two children together: Leo, who was born in 1998 and goes by LoveLeo on social media, and another son born three years later in 2001.

NutriDrip, ahead of funding round, sets up aging and hangover treatments at Wynn Hotels, Equinox – CNBC

At Clean Market in Midtown, New Yorkers have a wide menu of healthy offerings to choose from, such as "superfood smoothies" and bowls with a side of a "moon dust of choice."

But if clean food isn't enough, customers can also get a boost from vitamins delivered intravenously at the NutriDrip bar. The service is growing in popularity and attracting customers from fitness and lifestyle companies like Equinox to some major hotel chains.

NutriDrip sells 15 vitamin infusions administered by medical professionals via an IV drip that takes about 30 minutes. The Nutribody drip aims to support fat loss with a combination of l-carnitine, taurine, vitamin C, B complex, among others. There are also the popular hangover remedies Basic Recover, Super Recovery and Mega Recovery which range in price from $119 to $199 depending on how much you're hurting from the night before. The Nutriyouth drip claims the ability to "help stop cellular aging in its tracks" with a mixture of anti-aging enzymes, molecules and vitamins for $599.

Founded five years ago, NutriDrip is looking to expand in 2020 with a Series A funding round in the first half of this year. Executives declined to say how much money they're looking to raise.

"Over the last three years, IV nutrient therapy, specifically NutriDrip, has grown, at like a 60 to 80% year-over-year growth rate, even while opening new stores," said co-founder Asa Kitfield. "So we're really excited to see what sort of saturation the market can see on like a local and national basis."

One of its new corporate clients is Wynn Hotel will be offering NutriDrip IV drips to its guests in Las Vegas in early 2020.

A woman receives a vitamin infusion via intravenous drip.

Carlos Allegri | Reuters

"As many of our guests now expect a more holistic set of wellness options, we have evolved to include broader wellness themes related to functional wellness, physical fitness, and healthy cuisine," said a Wynn spokeswoman, adding "providing IV therapy is one more way to help our guests maintain personal wellness routines while they are traveling."

The Equinox Hotel in Hudson Yards also has been offering the service to guests when it opened last summer. Kitfield also told CNBC, NutriDrip is slowly rolling out the service to other Equinox gym locations in early 2020 as well.

Equinox executives Jeffrey Weinhaus and Harvey Spevak were early investors in NutriDrip parent company Clean Market, along with real estate investor Jack Terzi, Seritage Growth Properties CEO Ben Schall, fashion designer Andrew Rosen and venture capital firm Able Partners.

Celebrities, including Madonna, Rihanna and Simon Cowell, are reportedly fans of IV vitamin treatments, but it's drawn some controversy.

"Anytime you poke a hole in somebody's vein, there is some risk that they'll bleed excessively. There's also some risk that they will clot excessively," said Dr. David Katz, founding director of Yale University's Prevention Research Center. "So the risks are not great. And the risks are not very common, but there are risks, and the only way to justify any risk in medicine is by a greater likely benefit."

He said there is "minimal evidence that there is any meaningful benefit for most people."

Kitfield said NutriDrip doesn't make grand promises about its treatments but said the company and customers clearly believe in its benefits.

"When you look at our business where 50 to 60% of our revenue comes from regulars, and that's why we continue to grow, the proof is kind of in the pudding, Kitfield said.

According to the Global Wellness Institute, a nonprofit that tracks the industry, the global wellness market is a $4.5 trillion industry. While IV therapy and alternative medicine is a small portion of the overall spending, GWI says it's among the fastest-growing sectors.

Science is still studying how telomeres are linked to longevity – Quartz

Inside each of our cells is a genetic hourglass. Every time our cells dividewhich they have to do to keep us alivetheir 23 pairs of chromosomes remain nearly identical. Except for one intentional change: After each division, a cells chromosomes get a little bit shorter.

Ten years ago, a group of scientists won the Nobel Prize in medicine for discovering these ever-shortening DNA sequences at the end of our chromosomes, called telomeres. After a cell has divided a certain number of timesknown as the Hayflick limitits telomeres are so short that the cell knows its time to peacefully shut itself down. When enough cells die off, organs wear out, and eventually, we die, too.

This discovery ushered in decades of aspirational research that set out to understand the role of telomeresand the protein that can rebuild them, called telomerasein aging. Perhaps, if scientists could figure out how to flip our biological hourglasses over, our cells could replicate for longer. Our organs would tire more slowly, and we could delay death.

The Nobel-winning research began way back in the 1970s with the work of biologist Elizabeth Blackburn. But even after four decades, its still not clear if telomeres can safely be manipulated to thwart aging.

That hasnt stopped some scientists from betting on artificially extending telomeres to support longevity: Just last week, Kansas-based biotech startup Libella Gene Therapeutics announced that it would begin early clinical trials testing out a gene therapy that could lengthen telomeres, according to OneZero.

That approach, which as of yet has only been tested in mice, is indicative of humans deep desire to roll back the clock. But the deeper scientists go into the field, the more complicated the story behind telomeres gets: Theres evidence that they may play an important role in other aspects of our health, and that cell division may not be the only reason they shrink over time. Before scientists can try to safely harness telomeres to improve our health, theyll have to answer these questions.

One anti-aging strategy that researchers have investigated involves telomerase, the telomere-building protein that Blackburns colleague Carol Greider discovered on Christmas Day in 1984.

Telomerase is an important tool for cells that divide frequentlylike blood cells, the lining of our digestive systems, or sperm and egg cells. These cells regenerate so often that they need an enzyme to regularly rebuild the caps on the end of their chromosomes.

All the other kinds of cells in our bodies shouldnt have telomerase. But if they did, theoretically, their telomeres would never shrink. They could keep dividing beyond their normal Hayflick limit.

Theres one big problem, though: Cells that have telomerase but arent supposed to often wind up to be cancerous.

In approximately 90% to 95% of cancers, during the process of oncogenesis, telomerase is reactivated, says Masood Shammas, a lead scientist at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. As cancer cells spread, theyre able to build their telomeres back upallowing them to keep dividing and dividing and dividing.

This means that messing with telomerase to somehow extend lifeas Libella is attempting to, by injecting patients with a virus containing the gene that codes for telomeraseis risky business.

On the other hand, it also means that blocking telomerase could be a way to treat cancer. Shammas has worked on clinical trials that have tested telomerase-targeting drugs with a company called Geron. Although their original drug worked in mouse models, it failed in early-stage clinical trials for people, because it had some nasty side effects. As a result, scientists have had to put stopping telomerase on hold until they can figure out how to make it only work in cancer cells.

An alternative strategy focuses not on rebuilding telomeres, but slowing their shrinkage in the first place. Scientists are trying to understand what, in addition to normal cell division, causes telomeres to contract. Maybe limiting these activities could decelerate aging in a way that doesnt accidentally reactivate a cancer pathway.

The activities that can slow telomere degradation are still being researched. It seems, though, that theres a lot of daily living that may play a role in telomere length. Anything that damages DNA will damage telomeres, says Shammas.

Telomeres are particularly vulnerable because theyre more exposed on the ends of the chromosomes. Smoking, drinking, and eating red meats fried in oilswhich all produce molecules that can bind to and distort DNAmay harm your telomeres, too. They also happen to all be known carcinogens.

Of course, this doesnt mean their effects are felt immediately, or that these activities will definitely lead to telomere shortening or cancer. Its their cumulative effect over a lifetime, plus other factors that scientists havent nailed down yet, that we need to watch out for. And clinicians generally advise against these activities anyway.

Perhaps more surprisingly, a life-affirming action may also cause telomeres to shrink: Pregnancy.

Dan Eisenberg, a biological anthropologist at the University of Washington, has studied how telomeres behave over time for people who become pregnant. A large cohort study he and his team published last year looked at women in the Philippines. After controlling for age, they found that the more times someone had been pregnant, the shorter their telomeres were. Each pregnancy seemed to shorten a persons telomeres by the equivalent of as many as four years of life.

This could be because of how taxing pregnancy can be on the body. Developing a fetus takes about twice the energy a person normally uses. Theres less energy available to maintain and repair cells for the long-term, Eisenberg says.

While it seems counterintuitive that evolution would penalize a person for reproducing, it may be a necessary trade-off. Perhaps the benefit of spreading new genes into the world is worth the cost of slightly shorter telomeres, Eisenberg explained. After all, evolution doesnt affect the processes that happen to us after we after our reproductive years. Weve already achieved the goal of immortality by way of our progeny.

So, lifestyle modifications to prevent telomere shortening dont sound too appealing. And so far, the only activity that researchers have found that can naturally extend telomeres in the slightest may be exercise. The only thing that world show that can activate telomerase activity is regular exercise, says Shammas. But its still not clear why this is the case, and it certainly doesnt mean that hitting the gym can stave off all aging.

Which brings us back to the promises made by companies like Libella, the gene therapy outfit currently promoting a telomere therapy. With four decades of telomere research yet to produce better guidance than cut down on red meat and exercise more, its easy to appeal to the insecurities and fears of the aging population with less-than-fully-baked treatments.

As OneZero reported, Libellas study is slated to begin early next year in Colombia. Likely, its running there to skirt the US Food and Drug Administrations (FDA) requirement for an Institutional Review Board, which ensures the safety of clinical research participants. Generally, clinical trials overseen by the FDA have been preceded by trials in at least two animal species to show theyre safe and effective. So far, the studies that have backed Libellas gene therapy are based just in mice.

This study has caused a lot of experts to raise eyebrows, particularly when it comes to the ethical issue of asking participants to pay for a therapy with high risks. The company is charging $1 million for each of its five aging but otherwise healthy participants, as well as five participants who have Alzheimers disease and five who have a form of artery disease.

But the trial also raises the question of whether aging itself is a disease worth treating. With any disease, there has to be a disease-free state, says Suresh Rattan, biogerontologist at Aarhus University. In the case of a situation like aging whose main cause is life itself, when will we say that we have treated it? Evolution didnt design us to live forever.

Anti-Aging Medicine in Rochester Hills by Dr. James Lewerenz

Some people embrace aging. Others fight tooth and nail to put off the inevitable.

And then there is another group of people who are unfairly trampled by the side effects of aging no matter how hard they honestly combat it. No matter which category you fit into, anti-aging medicine can serve you well, and help you take control of your health and wellness to develop a plan for an active future and a life well-lived.

The goal of anti-aging medicine is to help prevent people from suffering diseases or disorders by implementing early detection, prevention, treatment, and reversal of age-related afflictions. The application of advanced scientific and medical technologies aid medical professionals focused on anti-aging medicine. Ultimately, healthcare professionals who practice anti-aging medicine apply the most appropriate anti-aging techniques to help their patients to live longer, healthier, more productive, independent lives.

While the Baby Boomer generation is expected to live longer, thanks to access to better care, innovative treatments, and constant medical research, the statistics around every generation can easily change. Take, for example, the Millennial and Gen X generations, which talk a great deal about clean eating and healthy lifestyles. Research has shown that these groups are at higher risk for colorectal cancer, perhaps due to poor diet, lack of activity, and obesity. The health of the younger generations is also in jeopardy thanks to higher usages of alcohol, tobacco, illicit drugs, HPV, mental disorders, and more.

A study completed in connection with Portland State University found that the secrets and predictors of excellent health included:

The younger generations have an opportunity to modify these factors while they are still in the throes of youth or even reaching middle age. Making such an effort, according to researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health, can add close to 25 more years to a persons productive lifespan.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) uses estrogen, progesterone, and other hormones in varying combinations to treat the common and bothersome symptoms of menopause. The point of HRT is to replace the female hormones your body no longer makes. This being said, HRT is also available for men. It is natural for a mans testosterone to decrease with aging. Therefore, HRT would not replace anything missing hormones like it does for women. However, men with unnaturally low testosterone levels might benefit from HRT.

HRT has been less popular in recent years due in part to a clinical trial that found HRT posed more health risks than benefits. The piece of information that is often omitted from this news, however, is that the cautions applied to just one type of hormone therapy and one particular demographic older postmenopausal women.

The negative results of one hormone treatment for a certain age group, however, does not mean this type of treatment will have the same effect on all people. A comprehensive look at a persons risk factors and current state of health are the elements that should legitimately contribute to an anti-aging medical professionals decision of whether or not to prescribe HRT. For some people, HRT is the right move at the right time.

Your entire medical past and current medical history will be carefully reviewed to determine if HRT is the appropriate treatment for your needs. You will learn about the benefits and risks so you can have a say in your treatment decisions. But know that if your anti-aging doctor recommends HRT, he or she has evidential and scientific proof that HRT will be incredibly beneficial to improving your life and extending your lifespan.

The objective will be to find the best product for your needs, best delivery method (whether through a cream, patch, ring, or otherwise), lowest effective dosage, all while making healthy lifestyle choices about diet and exercise, avoiding any vices, and managing chronic health conditions and keeping up with follow-up care with your anti-aging doctor. As an alternative to typical HRT, natural hormone supplements like coconut oil and magnesium are sometimes prescribed as a non-medicinal way to support the endocrine system and encourage natural hormone production. This path of treatment may be right for some patients.

Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is typically delivered in the form of hormone pellets. Inserted just under the skin, these pellets slowly release natural forms of hormones into the body. The procedure takes only a few minutes to complete and aims to balance hormones by lasting three to four months.

Pellet therapy is considered a more natural options of HRT, plus it is incredibly convenient. But the benefits are many, most notably the slow release of hormones that allows the body to adjust to the influx of hormones. Just like all anti-aging medical interventions, pellet therapy is customized for each patient.

The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M) is a United States non-profit organization with a global reach and over 26,000 members. The focus of A4M is to advance technology to improve the detection, prevention, and treatment of aging-related diseases and to optimize the human aging process. The A4M also educates its audience of physicians, scientists, and the general public on matters regarding breaking technologies, anti-aging issues, and biomedical sciences.

The work to prolong a healthy lifespan in humans is defined by A4M as a three-part science- and research-based effort:

The anti-aging diagnostic and treatment practices are supported by scientific evidence.

Data is acquired in an orderly process to form scientific and objective assessments upon which effective treatment is assigned.

A great resource is the National Library of Medicine, which holds over 3,000 peer-reviewed articles on anti-aging medicine.

Ultimately, anti-aging medicine is about utilizing the findings of science and research to support the belief that interventions in diet, exercise, and nutrition habits can significantly impact the functioning and lifespan of the aging population. Philly native discusses the ‘Allure’ of anti-aging to movie star super-heroines – Philly.com

Allure magazine made headlines this past week when they announced that they will no longer use the term anti-aging in their stories.

This issue is the long-awaited, utterly necessary celebration of growing into your own skin wrinkles and all, said the magazine in its latest issue. No one is suggesting giving up retinol. But changing the way we think about aging starts with changing the way we talk about aging.

With that in mind, and starting with this issue, we are making a resolution to stop using the term anti-aging. Whether we know it or not, were subtly reinforcing the message that aging is a condition we need to battle think antianxiety meds, antivirus software or antifungal spray.

The issue for actresses, especially with movies featuring non-aging superheroes staying so popular, is how to stay relevant and in the game.

In the piece,Allure also included quotes from past and present stars like X-Men star Halle Berry, who is quoted as saying, When you see everybody around you doing it, you have those moments when you think, to stay alive in this business, do I need to do the same thing? I wont lie and tell you that those things dont cross my mind, because somebody is always suggesting it to me. You know, if you just did a little bit of this and that, lift this up, then this would be a little bit better. Its almost like crack that people are trying to push on you. Thats what I feel like. I just have kept reminding myself that beauty really is as beauty does, and it is not so much about my physical self. Aging is natural, and thats going to happen to all of us. I just want to always look like myself, even if thats an older version of myself. I think when you do too much of that cosmetic stuff, you become somebody else in a way.

Cate Blanchett (the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok), says in the article, I havent done anything, but who knows. When youve had children, your body changes; theres history to it. I like the evolution of that history; Im fortunate to be with somebody who likes the evolution of that history. I think its important to not eradicate it. I look at someones face and I see the work before I see the person. I personally dont think people look better when they do it; they just look different. Youre certainly not staving off the inevitable. And if youre doing it out of fear, that fears still going to be seen through your eyes. The windows to your soul, they say.

However, Philly native Ronald Klatz, who has been called the guru of anti-aging by Business Week and is the President of The Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, said that Allure and the celebritieshave a misunderstanding of what anti-aging is.

First of all, let me applaud the 29 celebrities in the Allure magazine online article, for living or having lived a life that seems to be healthy and that adheres to anti-aging principles, said Klatz. These would include healthy eating, proper amount of exercise, likely buying natural foods and being blessed with great genetics.

Unfortunately, being blessed with great genetics alone does not always help someone stay beautiful as they circle the sun more than 40 times, he continued. You have to believe that, although age is inevitable, it is not the only factor that causes your body to deteriorate and grow older.

Look at Cindy Crawford, he added. I doubt very many seniors in high school would refuse to take Cindy to the prom! Even though she is blessed with better genetics than most of us, I am sure she engages in plenty of exercise to keep her body young and healthy and combat the effects of aging.

I certainly dont believe in unnecessary plastic surgery, hormonal therapies that are not supervised, or stem cell therapies at the beauty shop or overzealous and completely false claims by creams and other products that claim to beanti-aging, Klatz said. Anti-aging should not be a buzzword. Instead, I believe that credible non-commercial information should be used as a tool to combat ignorance and protect consumers.

Anti-aging is about living healthy and inner beauty, he added. It isnt about cosmetic surgery, solely enhancing our appearance or trying to live forever. It is about getting older with a better quality of life and slowing down and in some cases defeating disease.

While Klatz is pleased that Allure is acknowledging the issue, he said,Magazines such as Allurehardly focus on or promote inner beauty. They focus on outward appearance, pushing cosmetic goods, promote unbelievably attractive celebrities and models and then have the gall to take shots at botox for helping millions of people try to look and feel a little better.

Unfortunately, magazines like Allure give young women unrealistic expectations on a daily basis, Klatz concluded. They make people feel that they have to look like Halle Berry or Jennifer Aniston to be beautiful and thats simply not true! You just need to live an anti-aging lifestyle!

Antibody Fights Fat, Fires up Metabolism – Anti Aging News

Two international research teams have determined an antibody decreases fat while simultaneously boosting metabolism. Their studies involved mice yet it is believed the findings will also apply to humans. It is hoped that this breakthrough will help treat osteoporosis, obesity and a number of other conditions.

About FSH

It is known that a specific antibody targets follicle-stimulating hormones (FSH). These hormones increase when menopause occurs. Menopause is tied to a number of different health problems in women like the loss of bone density and an increase in weight gain. FSH is generated by the pituitary gland in mammals of both sexes. It spurs the growth of ovarian follicles in females and also regulates several reproductive processes. The antibody in question heightens bone mass, increases metabolism and decreases body fat in mice. It is believed that blocking FSH to counteract menopause symptoms will help treat conditions like cardiovascular disease, obesity, cancer, and osteoporosis.

About the Study

The two international research teams were supervised by Clifford J. Rosen, Li Sun, and Mone Zaidi. The teams performed their work at the Maine Medical Center Research Institute and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. They used a synthetic mouse antibody to key in on a 13-amino-acid sequence of a single subunit of FSH. The antibody was tested on female mice whose ovaries were removed. The removal of the ovaries caused high levels of FSH. The antibody was also tested on female and male mice that were provided with high-fat foods.

The Findings

In both instances, treatment using the antibody spurred fat loss and a faster metabolism. The results have intrigued scientists and medical professionals around the world. More extensive studies will be performed in the near future to determine if the findings are relevant to human health.

How Biotech Will Make Us Live Longer – Let’s Talk Anti-Aging – Labiotech.eu (blog)

Last week, at our first Labiotech Hangout,Philip had a chat with James Peyer, a partner at Apollo Ventures, to ask a few questions about how biotech istackling the anti-aging space.

For a long time, the anti-aging field has not seen much innovation, both due to a lack of scientific know-how as well as a lack of confidence on the part of pharma and regulatory agencies. Yet, in the past years, the field has started to turn into one of the most hyped areas in biotech, marked by the launch of companieslike Unity Biotechnology, which recently raked in $116Mfrom big names like Jeff BezosorCalico, which was co-founded by Google in 2013.

James Peyer from Apollo Ventures, a VC that focuses on biotechs in the age-related disease space, talked to Philip abouthow biotech is trying to solve the challenges of anti-aging, where the field is moving and how the first anti-aging therapies could enter the clinic within the next two years.

Referring to a review article on the hallmarks of aging, Peyer explains thatWithin the last 5 years, our understanding has gone from theory and hypothesis-driven to really coalescinga strong data-driven knowledge base. While there is no drug out there yet that is approved as an anti-aging treatment, James comments that The geroscience space has at least 80 mutations or chemicals that have been shown with some level of conviction to extend the healthylife span of a mouse.

However, the challenge will be to bring these compounds into the clinic. Anti-aging therapies are preventative medicines, meaning that the treatment is given before the actual occurrence of age-related disease so how do you run a clinical trial for such medicines?

Peyer mentions a group of scientists from Albert Einstein College of Medicinein New York that have been piloting such a preventative medicine study with a 7-year trial, totest whether the generic drug metformin can delay the onset of age-related conditions. This model of a 7-year clinical trial though, thats not really something that can be easily translated to a commercial model with a patented drug,he explains.

But whats gonna come out of those trials in the next 5-10 years are biomarkers that will give us a hint on whether or not adrug is working to reduce the risk of age-related diseases, and then that biomarker could be used in future trials,Peyer argues.

Apollo is following a slightly different path, though, as Peyer explains. The VC aims to go after geriatric syndromes, such as osteoarthritis, that are actually treatable medical conditions. Youll be really focussed on one indication thats a real clinical opportunity and move that towards the clinic just as you would with a traditional oncology drug or osteoarthritis drug.

Thats the opportunity that Apollo is really excited about and then, of course, there is the vision in the longer term that those two paths () will come together and create a world where we can actually do preventive clinical trials,Peyer adds.

Reflecting on who is buying in on that vision, Peyer says that the big players that are now coming into the area are technology players like Jeff Bezos or Google (). The internet space has attracted so much investment but the return profiles in this space actually look much worse compared to biopharma both in the US and the EU.

The biopharma space is actually just kicking ass right now! So when you see numbers like that and youre a tech investor it makes sense to make some moves.

Check out the video to hear more about which companies are leading the fieldandwhere Apollo is heading.
