Addressing the potential impact of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on Double Aspheric Lens Market Dynamics, Segments and Supply Demand 2019-2061 -...

Dr. Wellness The Manila Times – The Manila Times

DR. JOEL LOPEZMedical Director, J.Lopez, M.D. Medical Group

Treating the root of the illness, and not the symptoms, is key to enduring healthcare that is his prescriptionA strong and healthy immune system is definitely our bodys first line of defense [against] Covid-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) and other illnesses, declares Dr. Joel Lopez, medical director of the J. Lopez, M.D. Medical Group.

Dr. Lopez was about to start a two-hour webinar (online seminar) for medical professionals and laymen on How to Fortify your Immune System and Vitamin C when Boardroom Watch reached him on April 6.

Holistic treatmentsPending the availability of a safe and effective vaccine for Covid-19, Dr. Lopez recommends nutritional supplements to boost ones immune system. Vitamin C should be given to high-risk individuals, such as frontliners, the elderly and the frail, to help boost [their] innate natural immunity, he says.

American chemist, biochemist and chemical engineer Linus Carl Pauling, a double Nobel laureate for his extensive studies on the benefits of Vitamin C, is Dr. Lopez role model.

There are numerous studies showing that vitamins A, C, D3 and E, as well as minerals such as magnesium, selenium and zinc, can be effective prophylaxis against any type of infection, Dr. Lopez says, adding some wry advice: To cope with stress during the Covid-19 [pandemic], lessen the time watching or listening to news you find upsetting.

Dr. Lopez, who has set up clinics in Alabama, Florida, Indiana, Illinois and California, is now based in the Philippines, caring for his aged mother and giving back to his countrymen. He still maintains his San Francisco office, though. My mom (Dr. Adelina San Juan-Lopez) is a dentist, but most of her siblings are doctors, while several cousins on both sides of the family are medical doctors who practice locally and in the US. Im the only specializing in integrative, biological and regenerative medicine, he says.

Hi dad Tomas, an accountant who sold medical supplies and equipment, passed away two years ago.

NATURES WAY Dr. Lopez (back row, far left) with colleagues during his residency at Mercy Hospital & Medical Center. Below is him sweating it out at the gym. CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS

Back on home ground in 2013, Dr. Lopez opened a clinic at The Medical City on Ortigas Avenue, Pasig City, followed last year by a 28-story outpatient facility in Poblacion, Makati City that deals with integrative, holistic, functional, biological and orthomolecular (right molecules in the right amounts) medicine. His mission statement is to transform, boost, and maintain patients overall wellness.

Filipinos are very receptive to this type of medicine, Dr. Lopez says. Growth can be achieved by educating the public about the basics of nutrition/prevention. He has been practicing holistic medicine for 16 years. To be able to train more medical professionals in this field is his long-term goal.

I prefer that they shadow me while Im seeing clients, Dr. Lopez says. For more theoretical training, I share my textbooks and recommend conferences that I [attended], such as the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, the Institute of Functional Medicine and the Orthomolecular (right molecule) Medicine Group.

Dr. Lopez, who is 54, emphasizes that his biological age is younger, and more important

For optional results, he partners with the client to heal the body, mind, spirit and emotions. He addresses premature aging factors, such as nutritional deficiencies, chronic inflammation, hormonal imbalance, oxidative stress (fatigue, cramps, pain) and poor detoxification mechanisms.

We treat the underlying causes of illness, rather than just treating symptoms. My practice is based on the 7Ps: Personalized, Predictive, Precise, Preventive, Proactive, Partnership and Pharmaceutical grade supplements, he says.

He uses natural remedies (macro and micronutrients, herbals), along with bioidentical (man-made) hormones, peptides, (short strings of amino acids), cell extracts and homeopathy (treatment using natural substances). He applies medication only in an emergency.

Leave it to natureDr. Lopez says integrative medicine allows him to harvest the wisdom of traditional practices and fused with the continued growth of modern science. He also uses a four-step series, called Methodical Dynamics, to furnish a systematic approach to treatments.

Health should be approached holistically since the body and mind are connected, says Dr. Gracielle Consing, The Medical Groups operations manager.

Dr. Daniel J. Dunphy, The Medical Groups visiting practitioner, adds: The good physician cures illness, while the excellent physician prevents it. Harvie Baron, the Medical Groups nutrition coach and food educator, lives by this principle: Transform your health through the healing power of food.

As vice president and founding member of the Preventive Regenerative, Integrative Medical Association since 2014, Dr. Lopez aims to bring optimizing health for a youthful life practice into the mainstream and set up practice standards.

The aging process starts at 30 when our body doesnt produce enough hydrochloric acid to digest food protein, resulting in less less amino acid supplying the brain, he says. One or two teaspoons of apple cider before meals can help the body digest food better. It mimics the effect of hydrochloric acid in the body and is a treatment for indigestion.

Sometimes, you just have to go back to nature to solve nagging health problems and live longer, says Dr. Lopez. Walnuts prevent memory from declining. Fish, especially the small ones like the humble dilis (anchovies), have fatty acids that prevent inflammation. Clean water, air, sleep, exercise, stress reduction, detoxification and nutritional supplements are daily prevention practices.

Because diet influences aging, Dr. Lopez says he eats organic, in-season produce. These contain no hormones that destroy cells. When I wake up in the morning, that means Im still around for a purpose: To glorify Him in all things I do, in my professional and personal life. I read the Bible. He drinks a healthy milkshake for breakfast, as well as nutritional supplements. He exercises at the gym in the late afternoon or early evening. Exercise is one of the best anti-aging tools. It improves the muscle mass and lessens body fat, he says.

Dr. Lopez graduated with a bachelor of science in medical technology in 1986, followed by a doctor of medicine degree in 1990 from Far Eastern University. As a volunteer physician in 1992, he taught holistic healthcare in isolated rural areas in Palawan province, as well as on medical missions in Thailand. He later completed his degree in internal medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago and his residency at the Mercy Hospital & Medical Center in Chicago.

In 1996, he trained with one of Americas well-known pioneers in alternative medicine, Dr. Gus Prosch. He also taught yoga and chi gong (exercises for cultivating healing energy) on the side.

Dr. Lopez is a very good, compassionate and innovative physician. He is a very dedicated and tireless medical researcher who is always looking for new ways to holistically heal his patients, says Dr. Chiedu J. Nchekwube of Merrillville, Indiana, under whom Dr. Lopez worked directly in 2010.

But perhaps, the best testimonies come from those whom Dr. Lopez has treated. These are recorded on The Medical Groups website.

Joel is not going to throw a bunch of pharmaceuticals at you. He will get to the root cause of why your body is not in balance, and work to adjust it naturally, as much as possible, says Jaye Wittaker, a US-based patient.

Avegay L. from Fremont, California, adds: Dr. Lopez will not just treat the symptom of the disease, but will also treat the root and cause of the problem. I want to age gracefully and to look and feel healthy. Even my boyfriend is now being treated by Dr. Lopez.

He explains all tests so we can understand everything. He takes the time to answer our emails and phone calls when we need advice or help, say Sandi and Fred Herrera, a Filipino couple living in Manila.

Through diagnosis, detoxification, healing and rejuvenation, Dr. Lopez regularly reaches his ultimate goal. And that is to have patients take active control of their health and wellness.

WHOS AFRAID OF AGING?

Dr. Joel Lopezs individual approach in managing clients nutritional concerns is reflected through four Methodical Dynamics pillars. Your body is a home that you will live in forever, he says. Embrace, love and take care of it. Its the best thing you can ever do for yourself.

Step 1: Early Detection allows us to see what the body needs and how it can be better aided. This describes a 360 degree-approach to your consultation. Strategically designed questions are combined with the test results from the Medical Groups Integrative Innovations. This process allows the physician to find the best approach to the clients current concerns or preventive treatment.

Step 2: System Destress tackles the symptoms and possible causes that prevent the individual from reaching optimal health. It aids in body detoxification to allow the body to best receive the recommended treatments. Our bodies go through so much because of the environment and diets alone. This step in the Methodical Dynamics series helps the body to purify itself for better absorption of nutrients.

Step 3: Restore brings the body into a state of health that allows its very self to maximize its very potentials. Restore allows the body to regain its optimal state. Innovations in the practice of Integrative Medicine are used to allow the body to heal itself naturally.

Step 4: Regenerate stabilizes the foundations of the body with the support needed for the patients goals. Regenerate helps rebuild healthy cells as the person ages. With J. Lopez, M.D. Medical Group, Inc., regeneration supports these building blocks using the recommended nutrients and minerals each individual needs. This approach supports clients ageing process for the long term.

The Skincare World Is Obsessed With Hyaluronic Acid – Yahoo Lifestyle

From Good Housekeeping

In the skincare world, buzzy ingredients are a dime a dozen. But the super-trendy ingredient hyaluronic acid (HA) is actually here to stay. It's a powerhouse hydrator that's safe for virtually all skin types and can be found in everything from eye cream to face serum. But what is hyaluronic acid? "Naturally produced in the human body, [hyaluronic acid] is type of a sugar molecule that keeps our tissues cushioned and lubricated," explains Birnur Aral, Ph.D., director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab. "It is found in skin, joints, and connective tissue."

Don't be intimidated by the word "acid" in its name: Unlike exfoliating alpha- and beta- hydroxy acids or salicylic acid, HA is actually a gentle hydrator. In fact, when it's formulated for skincare, "hyaluronic acid is like a sponge that finds up to 1,000 times its weight in water," says Joshua Zeichner, M.D., director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. "It is what gives the skin its plumpness."

Skincare products with HA work hard to bring moisture to your skin all day by consistently drawing hydration from the air into your skin. In Beauty Lab tests, we've found that products with hyaluronic acid can hydrate skin extremely efficiently: Sometimes 400% better than creams 18 times the price, as we saw with Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream. Here's what HA is best at:

Hydrating. "Hyaluronic acid is a skin plumper by way of its ability to retain moisture," says Brendan Camp, M.D., double board-certified dermatologist and dermatopathologist at Medical Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery in New York City. "It helps to hydrate dry skin, providing a smooth, soft appearance."

Anti-aging. "As we age our skin produces less HA, contributing to the appearance of wrinkles," Dr. Camp explains. Hyaluronic acid hydrates and plumps skin to "improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles," says Dr. Zeichner.

Joint pain. Yes, really but not applied topically. "Hyaluronic acid injections are also given to joints of people suffering from arthritis," says Aral. HA supplements are also popular for those suffering from joint pain and osteopenia.

Story continues

"Hyaluronic acid is something your body naturally makes, so it is generally considered safe [for all skin types]," says Dr. Camp. Allergic reactions to HA are rare, so that means whether you have oily skin, sensitive, dry skin, or combination skin, you have the green light to use hyaluronic acid products. Our pros note that HA is particularly helpful for parched skin in need of deep hydration.

"Because it works by retaining skin moisture, [HA] is most often found in products that are left on the skin," says Dr. Camp. "It can be found in face creams, serums, masks, eye creams, and body lotions." Even on sensitive skin, "it can be used twice daily," says Dr. Zeichner. "If you are dry, I typically recommend it as a serum under your moisturizer." Keep in mind that your favorite skincare products might already be laced with hyaluronic acid: Check the label for mention of "sodium hyaluronate."

If you feel that your fine lines and sallowness are too much for topical skincare products to tackle, keep in mind that "hyaluronic acid is the ingredient in fillers like Juvderm and Restylane that are used to volumize the skin," says Dr. Camp. Put simply, the injectable form of HA smooths out skin by increasing the volume in lips, cheeks, or any other area that may be prone to signs of aging, says Aral. These injections are temporary and will be broken down by enzymes in the body in six months to a year's time.

Discovery links glucose metabolism abnormalities to Alzheimer’s disease – New Atlas

A new study, funded by the National Institutes of Healths National Institute on Aging, is offering novel insights into how protein expressions can be altered during the course of Alzheimers disease. The research suggests proteins regulating glucose metabolism and the anti-inflammatory activity of brain immune cells are linked with Alzheimers pathology, and could point researchers toward new treatment and diagnostics.

The study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, comes out of a larger project called the Accelerating Medicines Partnership for Alzheimers Disease (AMP-AD). This NIH-led venture is designed to advance novel diagnostic and treatment targets while bringing together government, industry, and nonprofit organizations.

This new paper describes the results of the largest Alzheimers-related protein study conducted to date, gathering over 2000 brain tissue samples and around 400 cerebrospinal fluid samples from research centers across the United States. Expression patterns of more than 3000 proteins were measured, looking at differences between healthy subjects and Alzheimers patients at different stages of the disease.

This large, comparative proteomic study points to massive changes across many biological processes in Alzheimers and offers new insights into the role of brain energy metabolism and neuroinflammation in the disease process, explains Suzana Petanceska, the NIA director managing the AMP-AD Target Discovery Program.

In both cerebrospinal fluid and brain tissue samples the research revealed higher expressions in Alzheimers patients of proteins involved in glucose metabolism and anti-inflammatory processes. Importantly, these elevated protein levels were also detected in subjects with preclinical Alzheimers, suggesting as well as a potential new treatment target, the protein abnormalities could serve as an effective early-stage biomarker of the disease.

Weve been studying the possible links between abnormalities in the way the brain metabolizes glucose and Alzheimers-related changes for a while now, say Madhav Thambisetty, one of the authors on the new study. The latest analysis suggests that these proteins may also have potential as fluid biomarkers to detect the presence of early disease.

The researchers note this study describes what is known as a fundamental research finding. This essentially means the study is outlining a foundational discovery, from which future research will hopefully be able to build new treatments or diagnostics. Suzana Petanceska notes this work has already been spread around the Alzheimers research community with the goal of inspiring new treatment targets.

The data and analyses from this study has already been made available to the research community and can be used as a rich source of new targets for the treatment and prevention of Alzheimers or serve as the foundation for developing fluid biomarkers, she concludes.

The study was published in the journal Nature Medicine.

COVID-19 is Not Really a Pandemic as Pandemics Go – Live Trading News

it is a Power, Profit, Control Pandemic.

The economic collapse is a result of precisely engineered governmental policies though those policies appear to be in the publics best interest.

COVID-19 meets the technical definition of apandemic, and the World Health Organization (WHO) declare it so. However, the death toll is nowhere near that of real pandemics that would legitimately justify the extraordinary measures being deployed by the US and some other 1st world government.

The Spanish flu in Y 1918 infected 500-M people worldwide, killing between 20 and 50-M. The Bubonic plague killed 50-M people, wiping out 60% of the European population. Those are what people think of when they hear the word pandemic.

COVID-19 presently affects a ultra-tiny fraction of the global population about 1.4-M cases out of a global population of 7.78-B, and even with a death toll of 81,000 worldwide, COVID-19 has had a miniscule impact, having killed a only 0.00001% of the population.

Death is inevitable, but any given individuals risk of dying from the epidemics ofdiabetes, heart diseaseorcancer, for example, is greater than their risk of dying from COVID-19 coronavirus.

Death seems to be acceptable from poor lifestyle-induced disease and environmental toxicity.

The Big Q: Why is it preferable and acceptable than death from an infectious disease?

Also, dying from a preventable medical mistake is a far greater risk, as thatkills up to 440,000 Americans every year.

The Big Q2+: Where is the panic about that? Is not the notion that conventional medicine kills 440,000 people a year terrifying? And 20% elderly patients are also injured by medical care. Where are the calls to protect our aging loved ones from this threat?

Were health policies more aligned with truth, we would not have these chronic disease epidemics and far fewer people would die from preventable medical mistakes.

More people must learn lead healthy lives, the need to be properly informed and take to heart what is harmful and what is healthy.

What I have learned over these past 5 wks is that when it comes to COVID-19, there are simple strategies with which people can address infection that does not require collapsing the global economy, creating unheard of unemployment and isolating everyone from human contact for wks on end. You can find many articles detailing such strategies in our coronavirus archive here

One size does not fit all situations and this knowledge has not been applied in this pandemic. What has been wrongly applied here is that everyone is being treated as though they are high risk for severe infection and death and therefore need to take identical precautions.

The Big Q3: What is happening here?

The Big A3: Shiva Ayyadurai, PhD in systems biology from MIT tell us: We have not said, Hey, lets shut down the economy to address the fact that we have skyrocketing obesity taking place, skyrocketing diabetes. So, the level of contradiction, the level of hypocrisy should wake up everyone to understand that there is another agenda.

There is another agenda afoot. I repeat what my mentor said: When things do not add up, take a step back and ask, what is the other agenda? And the only thing in a common-sense way that reveals itself to me is power, profit and control. Power, Profit and Control.

I believe that fear mongering is being used to suppress dissent, to crash the economy and to issue medical mandates, as does Dr.Ayyadurai. If you look broadly, there were massive uprisings, anti establishment uprisings in different countries. Well, they are all gone now. We do not even hear anything about them, Dr. Ayyadurai says.

He also believes this fearmongering and social isolation mandates will be used as a way to acclimatize people to accept state wants or what a few people deem is good for everyone.

A group of enlightened people tried that in the 1800s and failed, have they come alive and at it again?

That, I think, is the milieu being set up, he says. Theres another agenda,Dr. Ayyadurai says. Thats what I see, because it does not make any rational sense to crash the world economy over COVID-19. And to everyday working people, it does not make sense either. They are trying to sort this out.

In Summary: The 3-pronged agenda is; Power, Profit and Control. To counteract that threat, we need academic freedom and the freedom to discourse and debate. From that freedom, truth, and from truth, we are able to understand health, not only physical health but also in the broadest sense the health of our systems, our infrastructure and environment. With health, we gain the strength to fight for more freedom.

Freedom to manage The Fourth Industrial Revolution, and part of that management is to decentralize healthcare.

Have a healthy weekend, Keep the Faith!

Leveraging The Power Of Full Spectrum Hemp Oil (Synchronicity) – Anti Aging News

Article courtesy of: Dr. Joel Kahn, MD, who is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine, one of the world's top cardiologists, best selling author, lecturer, and a leading expert in plant-based nutrition and holistic care.

Did you attend biology classes in school? If so, you may remember your first introduction to the cardiovascular system, how the rhythmic beating of the heart circulates oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. Most likely, that first lesson was relatively simple to understand.

Eventually, the lessons got more complicated. You soon learned that dietary choices, physical habits, and sleep quality all play a significant role in cardiovascular health. Once you understood that heart health is also affected by inflammation, free radical damage, and hormone levels, you recognized the importance of maintaining a balance between essential bodily processes.

A relatively short time ago, researchers identified a regulatory system that influences nearly every essential function in the body, including processes directly impacting cardiovascular health. They also discovered that this universal regulatory system responds to the phytocannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids in hemp. Of the more than 100 cannabinoids in Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil, its the therapeutic potential of CBD(cannabidiol) that has people talking. CBD is a phytocannabinoid with anxiolytic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-spasmodic properties (1).

If youre intrigued by the therapeutic potential of Hemp Oil, its important to understand that the composition of the oil you select will have a considerable impact on your health. For the best experience, youll need to know how your body will react to hemp. Youll also need to know the differences between CBD oil and Whole-Plant Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil.

Investigating the Health and Wellness Potential of Phytocannabinoids

If youve been investigating the therapeutic potential of phytocannabinoids, you may already have a basic understanding of how these plant elements relay urgent messages to the receptors of the endocannabinoid system (ECS)(2), the largest regulatory system in the body. What you may not realize is how essential this communication is to your overall health and wellbeing.

Modern researchers believe the main purpose of ECS signaling is to regulate the processes involved in homeostasis (the internal balance all living organisms must maintain to survive). When internal or external forces threaten that balance, homeostatic processes restore equilibrium (3).

That equilibrium affects nearly every essential function in your body. The ECS messengers (endocannabinoids) are produced by your body as needed and then broken down by metabolic enzymes once their messages are delivered to cannabinoid receptors. The response initiated by the receptors depends on the chemical composition of the message received. Just a few of the numerous processes regulated by ECS signaling (4) include:

Ideally, your body would make all the ECS messengers needed to ensure that all internal processes run efficiently. But, this is an ideal scenario. Under the influences of stress, illness, or injury, the demand for endocannabinoids can exceed the available supply.

When demand exceeds supply, essential communication between endocannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors becomes less efficient. Important messages may not be received. Since phytocannabinoids mimic the effects of the endocannabinoids produced in your body, supporting ECS function with Hemp Oil can potentially restore essential balance.

How Supporting ECS Function Can Protect Cardiovascular Health

Today, many cannabinoid researchers believe endocannabinoid deficiencies cause disease. Current research appears to support the connection between the lack of ECS messengers and fibromyalgia, IBS, migraine, several neurodegenerative disorders, and other treatment-resistant syndromes (5).

The evidence supporting the therapeutic potential of phytocannabinoids for a number of health concerns is based on animal studies, laboratory tests, clinical trials, and user reviews. In particular, the studies investigating the cardiovascular benefits of CBD and other phytocannabinoids are particularly intriguing.

Preliminary research suggests the phytocannabinoids in Hemp Oil may be beneficial in reducing the risk of heart disease for people with diabetes (6). The research also shows that cannabidiol may protect the heart from ischemic damage. In animal studies, the CBD in Hemp Oil shows potential for stabilizing cardiac arrhythmia, a condition that causes the heart to beat too fast or in an irregular pattern (7)

Of course, far more testing needs to be done before reaching a universal consensus on hemp. Thats why Its important to note that CBD and other phytocannabinoids in Hemp Oil are not intended to be used as a preventative, treatment, or cure for any known health conditions. However, animal studies, lab results, and user testimonials suggest Hemp Oil products may be beneficial for heart health. To help determine how Hemp Oil can help you, consider the value of the following observations.

Phytocannabinoids May Help You Get the Rest You Need

While occasional sleeplessness is unlikely to cause irreparable damage, chronic sleep deprivation can take a considerable toll on your overall health. Current research shows that adults who sleep less than seven hours each night have an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes, weight gain, high blood pressure, and other chronic health conditions that can contribute to a higher risk of heart disease (8) Numerous Hemp Oil users claim nightly use improves sleep quality. Thats not entirely surprising. Sleep and sleep cycles are regulated by the endocannabinoid system. The CBD in Hemp Oil is shown to stabilize sleep cycles and improve REM sleep. Plus, the anxiolytic and analgesic properties of cannabidiol have the potential to provide mood and nervous system support (9).

Hemp Oil May Help Your Body Manage the Impact of Stress

Stress initiates a cascade of events that can compromise your health. In response to physical or emotional stress, your body increases the production of adrenaline and the stress hormone cortisol. The longer the duration of the stress-inducing experience, the longer it takes for your body to restore balance. Prolonged stress can result in chronic inflammation, high blood pressure, stroke, and heart attack. For women, the risk increases after menopause due to estrogen loss (10).

Unresolved stresses can also trigger insomnia and anxiety. Researchers have found that CBD and other minor cannabinoids in Hemp Oil interact with receptors directly involved in stress responses. These receptors include endocannabinoid, GABA, dopamine, and serotonin receptors (11). That interaction explains the anxiolytic properties of CBD and other plant-based cannabinoids. Essentially, plant cannabinoids may be critical in providing nervous system, balanced mood, and neuroprotective support.

Phytocannabinoids May Reduce Your Risk of Developing High Blood Pressure

When doctors measure blood pressure, they are evaluating the amount of force exerted on arterial walls as blood flows through them. When this force remains unnaturally high for long periods of time, it can cause considerable damage to blood vessels. This can result in a long list of potential complications, including atherosclerosis, chronic kidney disease, angina, and heart attack. Most people with high blood pressure never experience symptoms until problems develop (12).

Pre-clinical studies suggest that the CBD in Hemp Oil helps reduce blood pressure by initiating blood vessel dilation. Once blood vessels expand, there is less stress exerted on the arterial walls. A 2017 randomized study revealed that a single dose of CBD reduced the resting blood pressure and the stress-induced blood pressure increases of nine healthy volunteers (13). While the results of initial investigations are intriguing, further study is needed.

Hemp Oil Has the Potential to Calm Systemic Inflammation

Inflammation is a defense mechanism, a healing response initiated by your immune system. The reaction is a sign that an army of white blood cells is responding to an injury or fighting an infection. However, the same immune system response that protects your body from harm can also cause significant damage. Modern researchers believe chronic inflammation contributes to diabetes, arthritis, various cancers, and heart disease (14).

While several medications can alleviate inflammation caused by medical disorders, there are currently no pharmacological treatments for the low-level inflammatory responses triggered by sugar, trans fats, stress, and free radical damage. Research shows that CBD and several lesser-known phytocannabinoids have the potential to neutralize inflammation by inhibiting COX enzymes(15), delaying the breakdown of anandamide (16), and activating vanilloid receptors. The latter, vanilloid receptors, influence pain perception and temperature regulation.

Phytocannabinoids May Enhance Post-Workout Recovery

Regular exercise helps modify the risk factors for developing heart disease. As strength and endurance build, decreased strain on the heart is promoted by reduced blood pressure, improved fat to muscle ratios, and reduced inflammation. But, while exercise benefits your heart, it can take a significant toll on the rest of your body. The resultant sore muscles, joint stiffness, and temporary loss of muscle strength can derail even the strongest wills. Most post-workout pain is caused by microscopic tears to over-worked muscles (17).

The analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-spasmodic properties of the many phytocannabinoids in Hemp Oil show considerable therapeutic potential for enhancing post-workout recovery. Using Hemp Oil before or after a strenuous workout may help your body recover faster, so the pain and discomfort of increasing the intensity of your workouts wont keep you on the sidelines.

The Significant Differences Between the Three Main Types of CBD Oil

CBD (cannabidiol) is the most abundant of the many phytocannabinoids found in Hemp Oil. When a manufacturer puts CBD Oil on a product label, that description tells you far less than you may realize. Not all CBD products contain the full spectrum of phytocannabinoids, terpenes, and other plant-based nutrients found naturally in the original plant source.

Up to 99% of the time, over-the-counter CBD Oil is made with a single cannabinoid blended with a carrier oil or is derived from plant oils that have been compromised by harsh extraction methods. Thats why its important to have a clear understanding of your options and realistic expectations about commercial CBD Oil preparations. To ensure you are selecting the best Hemp Oil for your needs, consider what you may achieve using the following products.

Understanding the Limitations of CBD Isolate

Isolating CBD from the numerous plant elements found in industrial hemp can greatly reduce its supportive potential. To produce CBD isolate, the cannabinoid-rich oil must first be separated from the plant matter. Most often, the production process begins with soaking the stalks, stems, and flowers of the plant in ethyl alcohol, a commonly used food additive. Hemp seeds dont contain CBD or other phytocannabinoids. The concern with this extraction method is the presence of potentially harmful residues after the alcohol evaporates from the Hemp Oil.

After the extraction process is complete, the oil is heated for a certain amount of time. Any extreme temperatures can compromise product potency. Next, a third step called winterization is used to remove the plants fatty acids, terpenes, additional cannabinoids, and other plant components. All thats left behind is a white, crystalline CBD powder lacking many of the nutrients found in the original plant source (18).

Navigating the Specifications of Broad-Spectrum CBD Oil

Hemp-derived products are labeled as broad-spectrum when they contain many of the phytocannabinoids, terpenes, and phytonutrients of the original plant. Although a considerable number of the minor cannabinoids are left intact, the trace amounts of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are removed through a process called chromatography (19). While hemp plants dont synthesize enough of this somewhat controversial cannabinoid to cause intoxication, CBD users who would rather avoid THC typically select Hemp Oil products made with CBD isolate or Broad-Spectrum Hemp Oil.

Broad-spectrum Hemp Oil contains CBD and a wide array of phytonutrients but doesnt contain the entire spectrum of nutrients from the original plant source. In some cases, individual cannabinoids are isolated and then recombined in different ratios.

Recognizing the Benefit Maximizing Effects of Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil products are most often preferred by CBD enthusiasts looking to get the most benefit from their investment. Less processed than Broad-Spectrum Hemp Oil, Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil contains CBD plus the entire range of potentially beneficial phytocannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and other plant components found in nature. Youll likely find that a significant number of companies favor CO2 extraction over other methods because the resulting product is cleaner than oils derived from soaking plant matter in alcohol.

Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil is believed to be the more potent of the three options because of a little-known phenomenon known as the Entourage Effect that maximizes the oils therapeutic potential. This theory is used to explain how the combined effects of the many cannabinoids, plant terpenes, and other plant elements work together synergistically, with each plant component enhancing the impact of the others. The combined effects of each phytonutrient are far greater than those accorded by individual plant elements (20).

How a LipidTrans Infusion Process Delivers a True Entourage Effect

Although many Hemp Oil companies claim their full-spectrum products contain all the phytocannabinoids, terpenes, and plant nutrients in the same ratios found in natural hemp plants, those claims may not be entirely accurate. To experience the full potential of a True Entourage Effect, your body needs access to the full range of polyphenols, essential fats, and phytocannabinoids commonly altered or removed during conventional production methods. Thus, in order to gain the most benefit from your investment, its important to select Hemp Oil products crafted without high pressure, extreme heat, or chemical solvents.

Functional Remedies Synchronicity Full-Spectrum, Whole-Plant Hemp Oil relies on the power of nature to deliver the highest quality Hemp Oil possible, LipidTrans Infusion. The lipid infusion process transfers all the plant nutrients, phytocannabinoids, and other beneficial compounds to a heart-healthy oil (MCT oil). This gentle process preserves the integrity of Hemp Oil, protecting the delicate balance found in nature. While Synchronicity Full-Spectrum Whole Plant Hemp Oil shows considerable potential for protecting heart health, the only way to know if its right for you is to try it. Ask Your Body. To ensure purity and potency, all Synchronicity Full-Spectrum, Whole-Plant Hemp Oil tinctures, capsules, and topical products are third-party tested and produced in a cGMP certified facility. cGMP certification guarantees all production processes meet or exceed FDA enforced manufacturing standards.

Quidel Corporation to Host Free Webinar Addressing the Prevention, Detection and Treatment of Lyme Disease – Business Wire

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--An important webinar addressing the prevention, detection and treatment of Lyme diseasean affliction that impacts as many as 400,000 Americans each yearwill be held on June 25, coinciding with the annual early stages of Lyme season in the United States. The webinar is being sponsored by Quidel Corporation, a California-based diagnostic healthcare manufacturer and one of the nations leaders in developing rapid diagnostic health solutions.

Rightfully titled Lyme Disease: An Epidemic Within A Pandemic, the webinar will discuss the importance of early detection of Lyme disease, the various co-infections that are present with tick bites, and how Lyme disease may be mistaken for COVID-19 as some symptoms may be similar, including fever, achiness, chills and cough. The presentation will also cover new advances in the testing for Lyme disease, including Quidels Sofia 2 Lyme FIA test, which provides indicative results within minutes as opposed to days, which has historically been the norm. Performed in the privacy of a doctors office or local clinic, it is also the only test that can get results from a simple finger prick of blood.

Conducting the webinar will be Roxanne Carfora, D.O., founder of New York-based Ageless MD, which combines family medicine, anti-aging medicine and aesthetics in one patient-friendly environment. A graduate of New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Carfora is host of the radio program Getting You Healthy, Naturally and co-author of Ageless Adventures, which provides tips on how to live a more active, healthy lifestyle.

Passionate about disease prevention and patient education, Dr. Carfora has developed many programs concentrating on analyzing blood chemistries, hormonal imbalances, vitamin and nutritional depletions, genetic testing, and saliva testing. On the webinar she will share with attendees a 2019 study from Columbia Universitys Mailman School of Public Health concerning Multiple Agents of Tick-Borne Disease and will also discuss the Kay Hagan Tick Act, a bill currently before the Senate that unites the effort to confront the alarming public health threat posed by Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases.

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that is spread when people are bitten by an infected deer tick. Unlike a mosquito bite where people know immediately if they have been bitten, one of the challenges with Lyme disease is that symptoms usually will not appear for two to six weeks and may appear in a low-visibility area of the body such as in hair, an underarm or groin. At that point, typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, joint pain, weakness in the limbs and often a characteristic skin rash with a bull's-eye pattern. With appropriate antibiotic treatment, most people with Lyme disease recover completely; but the key is catching it early, and that means not hesitating to get tested.

Among those expected to attend the webinar are representatives of physician office laboratories, urgent care centers and pediatric practices, plus any other physicians, allied health professionals and healthcare researchers interested in the subject. The free June 25 webinar will take place from noon to 1 p.m. (EDT). To register, click quidel.com/webinars.

Surrozen reloads with $50M for final dash to the clinic, shines some light on lead Wnt-modulating candidates – Endpoints News

Two rounds totalling $83 million have propelled Surrozen through preclinical proof-of-concept, culminating in two antibody candidates modulating the Wnt pathway for tissue regeneration. Now, the South San Francisco biotech is topping up $50 million to complete the sprint to the clinic.

One of the two IND candidates targets liver disease while the other will be initially positioned for inflammatory bowel disease. With the cash infusion, Surrozen can also pursue more discovery projects in different tissues and areas.

Our goal is to file IND applications in 2021 and 2022, CEO Craig Parker said in a statement, 5 and 6 years after the company first set out to catch and push a second wave of regenerative medicine.

Christopher Garcia and Roeland Nusse, two Stanford professors, provided some of the scientific legs for the company. Aside from its role in cancer, Wnt a portmanteau integrating Wingless and Int-1 signaling is also key to the control of cell development and regeneration, but the instability means they are hard to manufacture. As Nusse elucidated crucial aspects of Wnt biology, Garcia inspired the idea to activate or enhance response to endogenous Wnts, through either bispecific or antibody-based molecules.

While it has long been known that the Wnt signaling pathway plays a crucial role in the maintenance and self-renewal of stem cells in a variety of tissues, scientists had been unable to overcome the technical challenges inherent in developing a therapeutic based on Wnt signaling, Nusse, the Virginia and Daniel K. Ludwig Professor of Cancer Research and Professor of Developmental Biology, said. I am hopeful that Surrozens approach to modulating the Wnt pathway, with the flexibility to address insufficient endogenous Wnt or insufficient receptors, may someday lead to therapeutics that have the potential to repair damaged tissue.

Claudia Janda, a postdoc at Garcias lab whos since moved on to the Princess Mxima Center for Pediatric Oncology, remains a scientific advisor alongside Princess Mxima director Hans Clevers and Stanfords Calvin Kuo.

Both tech platforms were represented in the lead nominated candidates.

SZN-043 was designed on SWEETS, or Surrozen Wnt signal enhancers engineered for tissue specificity. Through stabilizing the Frizzled receptors that Wnt proteins signal through, the compound was shown to stimulate hepatocyte proliferation in the liver and reduce fibrosis something that should be helpful in conditions like severe acute alcoholic hepatitis or even cirrhosis.

The possibilities are almost endless, with Surrozen spelling out potential applications in NASH and decompensated liver disease.

SZN-1326, meanwhile, was born out of SWAP (Surrozen Wnt signal activating proteins). The molecule binds to Frizzled receptors directly and should stimulate regeneration of intestinal epithelial cells. Researchers also noted anti-inflammatory effects in animal models.

It is still a ways from human data. But old investors are returning to take that leap with Surrozen, including The Column Group, Hartford Healthcare Trust and Horizons Ventures. Euclidian Capital and three other new believers are jumping on board.

COVID-19 stat updateGlobally (as of June 16, 2020, 16:11 GMT): 8,169,122, deaths 440,544, new cases 60,455, new deaths, 1,948; USA: 2,189,253, deaths 118,122, new cases 6,303 new deaths, 233 ; Philippines: 26,781, deaths 1,103, new cases 361, new deaths, 5; China: 83,221, deaths 4,634, new cases 40, new deaths 0; and counting, involving 213 countries. The new stats are for the previous 24 hours (as of June 16, 2020, 16:11 GMT). Chinas reported figures may not be reliable.

A few weeks ago, we wrote that a new wave of COVID-19 could emerge, if we, the people, did not behave wisely and properly. Recent resurgence and spikes have led to re-imposition of new lockdown in many cities/countries around the world resulting from lack of discipline and breach of the COVID-19 guidelines by people (crowd formation, not using masks, and not doing social distancing), aggravated by unruly protests and demonstrations. Peoples behavior is the sole determinant of whether there would be more waves of COVID-19 forthcoming, besides the present resurgence and when this pandemic will ultimately end. If this tragedy worsens or lingers, only we, the people, the one and sole potential spreader of this virus, singularly deserve the blame.

Jogging causes injuriesIn the 60s and 70s, jogging was considered the best form of exercise to attain physical fitness. We have enough medical information today to show that jogging has many attendant injuries to the hip joints, ankle joints, back, etc. from the constant jarring, complications which will manifest years down the line. Regular ambulation to brisk walking, depending on the ability and tolerance of the individual, is now the preferred form of physical exercise for cardiovascular fitness. Walking confers the same benefits, minus the injuries seen among joggers. Check with your physician before embarking on an exercise regimen.

Harmful herbal productsMost herbal products have not been scientifically investigated the same way all western drugs on the market have been studied and tested. Not all herbal medicines are dangerous but many have been shown to cause kidney failure, liver failure, cancer, clot blockages in the kidney veins, seizures, etc. Some of them have caused deaths.

Not too long ago a Chinese herb known as Aristolochia fangchi or A. fangchi was linked to kidney failure and urinary cancer. This herb is used in Chinese medicine to treat asthma. A. fangchi is also an ingredient in a Belgian weight-loss formulation, where the linkage was discovered.

This was not the first time where herbal medicines have caused severe, if not fatal, complications. The problem is that these herbal products are marketed as food supplements, thereby escaping the strict scientific scrutiny and testing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration routinely subject all drugs submitted for FDA approval before they are sold to the public. Hundreds of herbal preparations flood the market with medically unfounded and ridiculous claims (with money-back guarantee) as effective agents for practically all diseases known to man weight reduction, sexual potency, anti-aging, enlarging female breasts, or penis, etc. Unfortunately, there are enough victims out there who are willing to part with their money, falling prey to the unscrupulous entrepreneurs of this multi-billion-dollar industry.

Strategy to sleep betterStatistics reveal that over 100 million people in the United States do not regularly get a good nights sleep, and that about another 33 million have occasional sleepless nights. Sleep is very important for a healthy body and mind. Adults need 8 full hours of sleep and teenagers about 9 to 10 hours. Some helpful tips from the Mayo Clinic Sleep Disorder Center: (1) Stick to a schedule; dont sleep late on weekends; (2) Dont eat or drink a lot before bedtime; (3) Avoid caffeine and nicotine; (4) Exercise in the afternoon; (5) Slightly cool room is ideal for sleep; (6) Sleep only at night; dont take afternoon naps; (7) Keep the bedroom dark and quiet, since darkness and silence is more conducive to sleep; (8) Make your bed comfortable; (9) Take a hot shower or bath before going to bed; and, (10) Do NOT rely on sleeping pills, some of which are habit-forming and have side effects.

Breast cancer risksSome of the important risk factors include: smoking; having a mother, sister or daughter with history of having breast cancer; having a first birth at age 30 or older; having had previous breast cancer; having breast diseases that predispose to breast cancer; laboratory evidence of a specific genetic mutation or change that increases the susceptibility to breast cancer. In the U.S., about 180,000 new cases of breast cancer was diagnosed in 1997. The risk increases with age. About 80% of breast cancer occur in women 50 and older. It is uncommon under 40 but the risk is especially high among women who are over the age of 60. Regular medical breast examination and mammography (yearly or every two years depending on your physicians advice) will help a lot in early detection and cure.

Causes of acneThere are main risk factors that lead to the development of acne: hormonal changes, especially among teenagers; build-up of bacteria (lack of proper hygiene), overproduction of oil, and irregular shedding of dead skins cells, some birth control pills, fatty diet, stress, medications like cortisones, greasy cosmetics. Self-care includes washing and keeping your face and skin clean with a lot of cool (not warm) water and using acne lotion but not astringents and facial scrubs; avoiding skin irritants like oily acne concealers, greasy cosmetics, sunscreens, masks; keeping hair off your face; avoiding picking or squeezing blemishes. If your meticulous and careful personal regimen does not improve the situation after a couple of months, or if the problem gets worse, seek dermatologic consultation.

Vegan dietVegans (pronounced VEE-guns) are vegetarians people who do not eat meat or meat products, poultry or fish. Their diet consists mainly of plant-based foods, such as vegetables, fruits grains, legumes (peas and beans), nuts and seeds. This might be carrying it a bit too far. For a healthy meatless (no pork, no beef) diet, we suggest the addition of fish, which has Omega-3 oil that is good for the heart, and daily multivitamin-mineral complex. Those who do not eat red meat (pork and beef, etc.) and eggs, whose diet includes only fish, vegetables and fruits, have been found to have 50% lower death rates from cardiovascular diseases, and 25% to 50% lower death rates from cancer.

Want to Live to 100? We Asked Centenarians to Share Their Secrets to Living to 100 – Parade

Joe Newman tools around Sarasota, Florida, in a red Mercedes convertible. All the better to squire his young fiance, Anita. Shes 100. Hes 107. John and Charlotte Henderson of Austin, Texastheyre 107 and 105, respectivelymet at the university there. Together more than 85 years, and married since 1939, theyre the oldest living married couple in America.

Call them super-agers. Theyve won the longevity lottery with the right mix of genetics and biochemistry. But wait, theres exciting news for the rest of us: Anybody can get pretty darn close. Turns out theres no secret to living to 100.

We all have a genetic blueprint that, on average, should let us live to 90 in great shape, saysThomas Perls, M.D., professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and a geriatrician at Boston Medical Center, whos tracked thousands of 100-plussers in his New England Centenarian Study (and now their kids too in a new $25 million National Institutes of Health study).

Average healthy life expectancy is 69, so most people are leaving 21 years of good life on the table, says Utah cardiologist John Day, M.D., who studied southern Chinas remote Longevity Village, home to a cluster of centenarians. After six months of living what he learned, he lost 35 pounds, dropped 100 points off his cholesterol and 25 off his blood pressure, cured his insomnia and went off five different meds.

We asked these centenarian whisperersresearchers whove met more of the oldest old than anyone on earthhow its done.

Its a myth that the older you get, the sicker you get. Its more like, the older you get, the healthier youve been, Perls says. Until your late 80s or 90s, genes get only a fourth of the credit. The rest is down to simple health behaviors.

Living to 100 Cheat Sheet: 10 Ways to Up Your Odds of Joining the Century Club

Its never too late to start snatching back some good years, longevity experts agree. The best time is to start from childhood, says longevity expert John Day, M.D. The second-best time is today. Heres how to get started.

Twist: Just enough less to maintain healthy weight.

Maybe you heard mice on super-low-calorie diets live longer. But only at calorie levels unrealistic for most humans, Perls says. Instead, try adjusting how much you consume per meal: Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper, says Dan Buettner, author of The Blue Zones Kitchen, based on diets followed by centenarians worldwide in places he calls Blue Zones.

Twist: But dont assume theres magic in alcohol.

Social engagement while drinking may be why long-lifers tend to have one to two drinks per day, says University of California, Irvines Claudia Kawas, M.D., whose 90+ Study found this sweet spot.

Twist: God works in mysterious ways for your well-being.

Researchers arent entirely sure why people practicing a religion live longer. But they credit its related social life (seeing a pattern here?), volunteerism, stress-reducing prayer and attitude of gratitude.

Twist: It helps if theyre healthy friends.

Health behaviors are as contagious as catching a cold, Buettner says. If your three best friends are obese, theres a 150 percent chance you will be. People who are fit, active and eat right tend to reinforce one another.

Twist: Be aware you can suffer toxic loneliness even while with others.

Older adults who see only their spouse or the same two family members all the time fare less well than those who get stimulation from a wider social circle.

Twist: When its safe, in person is better.

Real, not virtual, social connections are important, Day says. One study showed that social isolation is just as much a threat to longevity as smoking or obesity. Research shows a dose response: The more time spent in social activities (book clubs, volunteering, hobbies), the lower the mortality risk. When its not safe to meet face-to-face, digital social connection is better than nothing.

Twist: If youre not born this way, you might be able to develop it.

Centenarians in Nir Barzilais longevity study at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine have an outgoing, easygoing, optimistic personalitytraits that keep them engaged with the world. It may be genetic, the author of Age Latersays, although personality can change even in adulthood.

Twist: You need to keep leveling up.

Crosswords only help when you first start, because you learn most at the beginning. Then you have to move on to Sudoku or other puzzles (or better, new brain-stretching activities) to get cognitive benefit, Kawas says.

Twist: Gym-rat marathoning not necessary.

It can be two or three shorter sets that add up to 45 minutes, says Kawas. Aging experts agree lifelong movementfrom climbing stairs to walks to dumbbellsis longevity aid No. 1.

Twist: Unlike a job, purpose doesnt end.

Retirement is a toxic word. It sends the signal that your productive life is over and now you begin a life of repose, Perls says. Adds Buettner: If you have a sense of purpose and are engaged with the world, theres a psychosomatic effect. Your body rises to it.

Twist: Anti-aging vitamin cocktails dont help.

What gets you to 90: basics. Focus on protein (but not much red meat), healthy fats and complex carbs. The five dietary pillars in the Blue Zones: whole grains, greens, tubers, nuts and beans. One cup of beans a day adds three to four years of life expectancy, Buettner says.

Survivors first get hit with age-related diseases (stroke, heart attack, some COPD) after 60 but cope with them much better than the rest of us.

Delayersfirst develop age-related diseases after 80. They tend to stay independent to an average age of 93.

Escapers make it to 100 without showing disease. About 15 percent of centenarians in this group are likely to make it to supercentenarian, age 110. (Perls study includes more than 100 supers!)

Ruth Kundsin, 103, Quincy, Massachusetts andIda Keeling, 105, New York City

Their secret: Keep moving

Youll find Kundsin doing cardio and strength training at her local YMCA. Think youre too old to work with a trainer? She started with hers at 93. Keeling is a world record-holder in sprinting who didnt lace up running shoes until age 67.

Alan R. Tripp, 102, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania andMarvin Weisbord, 89, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania

Their secret: Try new things

Tripp wrote the lyrics for Senior Song Book, an album he made in collaboration with a fellow resident of his Pennsylvania retirement community, jazz pianist Marvin Weisbord. Its is available for streaming and on MP3, but the first run of CDs sold out within days.

Could these senolytic drugs halt the spread of COVID-19? – Health Europa

Professor Michael P Lisanti, Chair in Translational Medicine at the University of Salford, has been an active research scientist for more than 30 years and is an expert in the field of cellular senescence. He tells HEQ about the potential of readily available, low cost, MHRA- and FDA-approved drugs to possibly treat and prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Senolytic drugs can be used to prevent or reverse ageing. There have been studies in mice that have shown that if you use a genetic trick, you can reverse ageing-associated disease characteristics but the problem is you cant do that in humans, so you would need a drug. We set out to identify drugs that would selectively kill senescent cells, but not harm normal cells; for this purpose, we developed a drug screen where we looked at various agents which prohibit cancer stem cell activity and we came across azithromycin, which selectively killed senescent cells with efficiency of nearly 97% and did not harm the normal cells. When we looked at the literature, we saw that patients with cystic fibrosis had been treated with azithromycin cystic fibrosis is similar to accelerated ageing as a disease, because theres a huge amount of inflammation and fibrosis and it dramatically increased their lifespan and their survival rates.

Fibrosis is normally an ageing-associated disease characteristic: its what kills patients with cystic fibrosis, because their lungs become stiff and can no longer expand and contract, in order to breathe. The azithromycin was also behaving as an antifibrotic, removing or preventing the formation of senescent myofibroblast cells; so we actually had proof In previous studies that our drug was actually a senolytic. If you reread the literature with senolytic glasses, you realise that the proof of its efficacy in humans is already there.

Another study in Japan looked at azithromycin based on its activity in cystic fibrosis patients and then applied these finding to patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The control group survival rate in that paper was 25%, but on azithromycin it was nearly 80%. There is evidence in the published literature that its either preventing or removing fibrosis which is consistent with our data, but nobody thought about cystic fibrosis or about idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis as diseases of senescence: they thought it was preventing the formation of the myofibroblasts, but we believe it was killing the myofibroblasts, which are now known to be senescent cells.

The reason you want to get rid of the senescent cells is because they are actually contagious. They secrete IL-6, which is an inflammatory mediator; and they make other cells senescent by diffusion of the inflammatory mediators, which explains why as you get older you accumulate more and more senescent cells. By the time youre 40 or 50 years old, you have aches and pains and you feel stiffness: these are a symptom that you are beginning to accumulate senescent cells.

All of this is very reminiscent of what happens in patients with COVID-19. Fatality rates are much higher in older patients and in patients with ageing-associated diseases, such as diabetes or coronary artery disease. IL-6 levels have been shown to be the best predictor for whether or not a patient will to wind up on a respirator and these patients may die from inflammation in the lung and the resulting fibrosis. It all sounds similar to a very acute episode of either cystic fibrosis or of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

The virus has something called a host receptor, which allows the virus to bind the surface of the cells and then get internalised. For COVID-19, there are two proposed host receptors: one is CD-26, which is a marker of senescence; and the other one is ACE-2, which is also increased during senescence. This would suggest that the virus is preferentially targeting cells with markers of senescence.

We think of senescent cells as old and not very energetic, but they have to secrete a lot of inflammatory mediators, like IL-6, so they actually have very active protein metabolism and they do a lot of protein synthesis IL-6 is a protein and they produce inflammatory mediators of the senescence associated secretory phenotype (SASP). Therefore, the virus would want to invade a cell that is better at protein synthesis in order to make more copies of itself and the necessary viral spiked glycoproteins, to package the viral RNA or DNA for viral replication. This virus is seeking out the cells that are the best at making protein, to make more copies of itself, so it gets in the cell and takes over.

The predilection for fatalities in patients with advanced chronological age suggests there is a connection with senescence; and azithromycin, which appears to be working in clinical trials, is a senolytic and an antifibrotic. Certain antibiotics of the azithromycin class of which there are many are inhibitors of protein synthesis. The same is true of tetracyclines like doxycycline. These drugs would inhibit protein synthesis, so they would block IL-6 production and also block viral replication. Azithromycin has been shown to inhibit Zika virus and Ebola virus replication; and doxycycline has been shown to inhibit Dengue virus replication. Any drug which is a protein synthesis inhibitor, like certain classes of antibiotics, would also inhibit viral replication not because of any characteristics specific to the virus, but because its inhibiting protein synthesis, which is required for their viral replication.

The question, then, is why we cant use these drugs now in the clinic. In the United States, if a drug is prescribed off-label, its perfectly legal: the FDA approves a drug after Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical trials for a particular indication. Then because the drug already went through Phase 1, which is a safety trial, it can be legally prescribed for any other disease indication off-label. The FDA will not actually have to directly approve doxycycline or azithromycin for treatment of COVID-19, because doctors can already prescribe it.

In a time of crisis, we need to practise what people are calling battlefield medicine, where we think outside the box. Theres already evidence in the published literature that these antibiotics have the protein synthesis inhibition side effect and have already been shown to inhibit viral replication. The problem in this country is people are rightfully afraid of antibiotic resistance. Its the kind of thing that has been ingrained in the mindset of doctors in the UK. However, I think we need to rethink the whole use of antibiotics to target viral infections. In fact, if you look in the literature for herpes virus (HSV), its already been shown that erythromycin, which is another protein synthesis inhibitor, is used either orally or as a cream to treat herpes outbreaks.

If we could give NHS workers either doxycycline or azithromycin prophylactically, the viral load would likely be gone or severely diminished. This would prevent the spread of the virus from one person to another, protecting clinicians against people who come to the hospital; and could also be used to treat patients. But, I think the key here is to avoid the fibrosis and the inflammation, which starts with the fever. When a patient comes down with a fever, they should immediately give them the doxycycline or the azithromycin, which will shut down IL-6 production and shut down the viral replication; so the patient is less likely to transmit the disease to healthcare workers.

All these drugs are very inexpensive the cost of doxycycline is 10 pence a day; azithromycin is also very cheap, because it came off patent in 2017 so these drugs could be used for prophylaxis and for treatment. Then potentially we could relax some of the social distancing and we could all go back to work. The problem is were not going to have vaccines for another 12 to 24 months, so we need something now thats already safe, thats MHRA- or FDA-approved for at least one indication. It may be something that can be used in conjunction with social distancing: some people dont have extra space in their house where they can really isolate, so then they could take an antibiotic like doxycycline or azithromycin to reduce viral loads. This would reduce the stress on the healthcare system, because if you treat people in the early stages and it works, they wont get to the ventilator stage and the problem is when you get to the ventilator stage, the patients lungs have effectively turned to cement from all the fibrosis, so the chances of getting people off the ventilator is rather low. Its very serious once you get to the ICU, so you want to prevent the onset of respiratory symptoms, by treating patients as soon as possible with an antibiotic that will shut down viral replication.

Doxycycline is the number one drug prescribed worldwide for any indication: its used for malaria, its mainly used for acne; and people will take it for six months at a time without any real issues, except maybe some stomach upset. People with acne rosacea take it for their whole life, especially in very disfiguring cases usually they recommend a drug holiday for a week or two, every six months. Doxycycline was approved first in 1967. Its not a senolytic, but it does inhibit IL-6 and it inhibits viral replication; and it has been shown by other people to be an anti-ageing drug as well. Both of these drugs are very cheap; and they should be in abundant supply worldwide.

SARS-CoV-1, the precursor for COVID-19, shows the same pattern of infection. They conducted experiments in humans and mice and saw that, for example, young mice will become infected, but it doesnt cause any real disease there is no inflammation or fibrosis; and a very mild pneumonia but if they use older mice aged 12 to 14 months, they see very severe inflammation, fibrosis and death. This is due to the induction of a very strong inflammatory response, which includes the IL-6. This original mouse model could be used to test this hypothesis regarding senolytics, but as these drugs are already FDA-approved, we can do that in parallel. The problem is its a question of time; and the longer we wait, the more people are infected, when we could just shut it down now. We could use patients already in hospital, you would have instant clinical trials. This is battlefield medicine. We should take advantage of the patient population with drugs that have very few side effects, and conduct clinical trials on a large scale.

I think people are in a state of helplessness. They dont know what to do, and the solution could be right under our noses. What were doing is not working, for many patients, and we need to change something; and the first step would be propagate the idea of field clinical trials. We can record all the data from the treatment of the patients as it progresses thousands of people have the disease and it could be a multicentre trial, the most important thing is to get something going now.

Much research into the treatment of COVID-19 is currently focused on the drugs chloroquine and azithromycin; and the FDA has granted an emergency licence for the use of chloroquine to treat COVID-19 patients. The European Medicines Agency has not yet followed suit, asserting that more research should be conducted; and some researchers have highlighted concerns over toxicity issues associated with chloroquine and its derivative, hydroxychloroquine.

Patients who are prescribed chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine normally would have to take a test for a glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD) [an hereditary condition which increases the risk of haemolysis when chloroquine is administered]; and there are other issues with both chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine. I think the side effects may outweigh the benefits, because its not an inhibitor of viral replication; its an inhibitor of viral entry. If the patient is already sick, they already had the viral entry, then chloroquine will not necessarily shut down the viral replication. It only works for patients who have not already been infected.

In the clinical data from the French trial of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin, the chloroquine did relatively little by itself and that has been called into question in terms of the effects. The combination with azithromycin was much more effective, but they didnt test azithromycin alone, which would probably be sufficient; because even if viral entry does occur, as long as the viral replication is inhibited, the virus will not propagate. We believe that the hydroxychloroquine isnt necessary; and we can reduce the risk to older patients by eliminating the hydroxychloroquine.

Azithromycin has some very mild side effects, but theyre not very prevalent; if they had been prevalent the drug would have been pulled off the market. There was some controversy as to the reproducibility of the studies regarding its side effects: multiple studies were done and some are positive, some are negative, so theres still a warning out there but the side effects only really occur with high doses of azithromycin, which would not be needed in this case. If azithromycin did cause problems for a patient they could switch to doxycycline, or they could start with doxycycline in the first place. These are just two examples of classes of drugs; there are other drugs which inhibit protein synthesis: erythromycin is in the same class as azithromycin, and it inhibits protein synthesis. It doesnt have the senolytic activity, but it would still inhibit the IL-6 and the viral replication.

The same is the case for the tetracyclines these are classes of drugs which are relatively similar and interchangeable, so if we run out of doxycycline, we would still have minocycline, tetracycline and all these other variations which have a similar effect on protein synthesis. The main issue with doxycycline is patients can experience some stomach upset or some nausea, but this can be alleviated by using a probiotic.

That would be the primary role of these drugs. Based on the results of clinical trials, the NHS could implement its usage. For example, ICU staff could receive it first, as they are in contact with patients that pose the most severe risk. Hospital staff right now are probably terrified of catching it, so why not take a prophylactic antibiotic, which has a chance of preventing infection? Im sure theyre doing a great job taking care of the patients, but it is traumatic to be under all this stress constantly. Its very stressful to be in such a high pressure situation, where youre afraid for your own life, but youre also trying to help other people at the same time. Then, you have your family at home and you dont want to also make them sick either. Healthcare workers are the people who are at the greatest risk; and already weve seen a reduction in NHS staff levels around one in four NHS staff are not at work, because they have either been infected or are isolating because they have symptoms.

We dont want to lose too many of the doctors and nurses in this crisis, so this would be helpful for everyone especially for preventing the further spread to shut down viral replication and contagion. Anything that can be done to reduce the viral load will reduce the contagion. They can do trials with young healthy volunteers who are asymptomatic, but it would be better to do it with the NHS staff who would need it most as a preventative approach for prophylaxis. We have recently proposed and published this prophylaxis strategy in a Letter to the Editor at the British Medical Journal (BMJ), which is widely read by GPs and consultants in the UK.

Repurposed drug helps obese mice lose weight, improve metabolic function – National Institute on Aging

An off-label experiment in mice using disulfiram, which has been used to treat alcohol use disorder for more than 50 years, consistently normalized body weight and reversed metabolic damage in obese middle-aged mice of both sexes. The international study was led by researchers at the National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the National Institutes of Health . The results were published online in the journal Cell Metabolism on May 14.

The scientific team studied groups of 9-month-old lab mice who had been fed a high-fat diet for 12 weeks. As expected, this diet made the mice overweight and they started to show signs of pre-diabetes-like metabolic problems, such as insulin resistance and elevated fasting blood sugar levels. Next, the scientists divided these mice into four groups to be fed four different diets for an additional 12 weeks: a standard diet alone, a high-fat diet alone, a high-fat diet with a low amount of disulfiram, or a high-fat diet with a higher amount of disulfiram. As expected, the mice who stayed on the high-fat diet alone continued to gain weight and show metabolic problems. Mice who switched to standard diet alone gradually saw their body weight, fat composition and blood sugar levels return to normal.

The mice in the remaining two groups, with either a low or high dose of disulfiram added to their still-fatty food, showed a dramatic decrease in their weight and related metabolic damage. Mice on the high disulfiram dose lost as much as 40% of their body weight in just four weeks, effectively normalizing their weight to that of obese mice who were switched back to standard diet. Mice in either disulfiram dose diet group became leaner and showed significant improvement in blood glucose levels on par with the mice who were returned to standard diet. Disulfiram treatment, which has few harmful side effects in humans, also appeared to protect the pancreas and liver from damage caused by pre-diabetic type metabolic changes and fat build up usually caused by eating a high-fat diet.

The NIA scientists, Michel Bernier, Ph.D., and Rafael de Cabo, Ph.D., collaborate frequently with researchers at NIH and beyond on studies into how changes in dietary patterns like intermittent fasting could lead to cognitive and physical health benefits. They first became interested in disulfiram after reading about the benefits this class of drug has shown in treating type 2 diabetes in rats, coupled with the growing interest in repurposing drugs that may also improve healthy aging.

When we first went down this path, we did not know what to expect, but once we started to see data showing dramatic weight loss and leaner body mass in the mice, we turned to each other and couldnt quite believe our eyes, Bernier said.

According to studys research team, the key to the positive results seem to stem from disulfirams anti-inflammatory properties, which helped the mice avoid imbalances in fasting glucose and protected them from the damage of fatty diet and weight gain while improving metabolic efficiency. Both groups of obese mice (control and disulfiram) were not subjected to any form of exercise, nor did they demonstrate noticeable spontaneous behavioral changes. Based on the evidence they observed, the researchers believe the beneficial results of disulfiram stem solely from the drug. They did not observe any negative side effects from disulfiram in the mice.

The research team stresses that these results are based on animal studies, and they cannot be extrapolated to any potential benefits for human at this point. It is recommended that disulfiram not be used off-label for weight management outside of the context of clinical trials. Still, given the findings, they are planning future steps for studying disulfirams potential, including a controlled clinical study to test if it could help individuals with morbid obesity lose weight, as well as deeper investigation into the drugs molecular mechanisms and potential for combining with other therapeutic interventions.

The research was supported by NIA through its intramural research program, NIA grants AG031782 and AG038072, in collaboration with colleagues from the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, Yale University, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, and University of Sydney, Australia.

This press release describes a basic research finding. Basic research increases our understanding of human behavior and biology, which is foundational to advancing new and better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat disease. Science is an unpredictable and incremental process each research advance builds on past discoveries, often in unexpected ways. Most clinical advances would not be possible without the knowledge of fundamental basic research.

Familiar to the medicinal practices in Siberia, Russia, Northern European countries, and other parts of Asia, Chaga mushroom has been used for a variety of health benefits and ailments including boosting immunity and improving overall health.

With that said, this mushroom cant really be classified as attractive. Chaga forms into a woody growth, or conk, which looks similar to a clump of burnt charcoal roughly 10-15 inches (25-38 centimeters) in size, yet inside youll discover a soft core with an orange color.

Known as an antioxidant powerhouse, Chaga mushrooms are excellent for fighting free radicals and inflammation. Various studies have shown this mushroom to be effective at combating oxidated stress, linked to skin aging slowing the growth of cancer, and it has also been found to lower low-density lipoprotein LDL, the bad cholesterol. This is why Chaga mushroom is best used to fight the signs of aging, reduce inflammation, and help manage cholesterol.

Unfortunately, there arent any human studies that have determined Chagas safety or appropriate dosage, therefore its up to the consumer to find a reputable supplement company, as well as speak with a medical professional before consuming the product. While Chaga is generally safe, its been known to interact with some common medications, causing potentially harmful effects, such as those taking insulin for diabetes, those taking blood-thinning medications, or those suffering from autoimmune diseases.

If youre looking to get your hands on some of that good old Chaga mushroom, here are a few easy options:this Sayan Siberian Wild Forest Chaga Mushroom Extract Powder Supplement, this Host Defense Chaga Capsules, or this NordicNordic Chaga Mushroom Tea.

When it comes to cordyceps, you have both the soil and insects to thank!

This parasitic fungi grows on the larvae of insects. How does it work? The fungi actually attack their host and replaces its tissue with long, slender stems that grow outside the hosts body. What youre left with are the remains of the insect and fungi which are hand-collected, dried and have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries.

Of course, theres not justone typeof cordyceps. In fact, there are over 400 species of Cordyceps discovered, yet two specific varieties have become the focus of health research: Cordyceps sinensisandCordyceps militaris.

While cordyceps have been used for thousands of years to treat a myriad of ailments including fatigue, sickness, kidney disease, and low sex drive modern-day herbal practitioners generally source cordyceps to boost energy, athletic performance, and muscle recovery. Basically, cordyceps are a one-stop-shop for those beginning or uber athletes!

Turns outCordyceps sinesisis particularly difficult to harvest and carries a price tag of more than $9,000 USD per pound, which means that most of these mushrooms are actually synthetically grown. Youll want to look for brands that carry the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) or NSF International (NSF) seal, referring to third-party organizations that weed out impurities and verify ingredients.

More research is needed to verify dosages, yet the most commonly used reference range is between 1,000 [to] 3,000 mg per day which has been associated with side effects and has been found to have certain health benefits.

Cordyceps are best consumed in powder or supplement form. Here are a few vegan-friendly, online options: this Four Sigmatic Cordyceps Mushroom Elixir, this Micro Ingredients Sustainably US Grown Organic Cordyceps Mushroom Powder, or this NOW Foods Cordyceps Supplements.

Lions mane mushrooms go by many traditional names includinghou tou gu and yamabushitakeand have been used far and wide in both culinary and medicinal practices in countries including China, India, Japan, and Korea. In its natural, unadulterated form, the lions mane mushroom is large, white, and shaggy, resembling a lions mane as they grow, hence the Westernized name.As a medicinal aid, lions mane is generally dried and used as an extract in a powder form. When it comes to cooking, this meaty mushroom is a great seafood replacement, oftentimes compared to crab or lobster.

Lions mane is particularly special in that it produces bioprotein nerve growth factor (NFG) and myelin (insulation around nerve fibers), both of which are crucial to brain health. Along with being a wonderful brain-boosting agent, lions mane is linked to increased concentration and memory, better cognition, and even a decreased level of anxiety and irritability (most likely from all those brain-boosting effects!).

While there arent any human studies conducted on lions mane, its generally considered to be a safe food to consume with the guidance of a healthcare professional. With that said, if youre allergic or sensitive to mushrooms you should absolutely avoid lions mane.

Lions mane may look a bit scary in its natural form, yet luckily theres lovely processed forms that make this much more manageable! Try out this Host Defense Lions Mane Capsules, this Four Sigmatic Lions Mane Mushroom Elixir, or this Micro Ingredients Sustainably US Grown Organic Lions Mane Mushroom Powder.

One of the more widely-recognized and popular medicinal mushrooms, reishi also happens to be one of the more affordable and easily accessible!

Also known as Ganoderma lucidum and lingzhi, reishi mushroom is a fungus that grows in various hot and humid locations in Asia. Reishi is a wonderful medicinal agent due to several molecules, includingtriterpenoids, polysaccharides, and peptidoglycans, that may be responsible for its health effects. This medicinal mushroom happens to be one of the varieties safely eaten raw, yet powdered forms are more widely used.

Reishi is well-known for its calming properties all of which are thanks to the compound triterpene, which reishi has its fair share of. This mushroom is known to aid sleep, decrease symptoms of anxiety and depression, and can even increase focus. On top of that, reishi has been known to promote healing.

There are great reasons to get on board with reishi mushroom, yet there are also some safety concerns to consider and go over with your doctor beforehand.

First and foremost, studies have shown that reishi mushroom consumption may cause upset stomach or digestive distress and two case studies, in particular, found significant liver problems after switching to the powdered form of reishi mushroom. This leaves some dangling questions regarding the effect of reishi mushroom on the liver, whether theres something off with the powdered form of reishi or whether it was a specific instance to this study.

With the limited data available, its recommended that those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a blood disorder, will be undergoing surgery or have low blood pressure should probably avoid reishi mushroom consumption.

Reishi is super popular in powder form, such as this Micro Ingredients Sustainably US Grown Organic Reishi Mushroom Powder. Yet, if youre a little weary of the powder, you can always try a good old supplement such as this New Chapter Reishi Mushroom Supplement or this BoostCeuticals Reishi Mushroom Capsules.

Vitamin E Dangers You Should Be Wary Of While In Quarantine – Medical Daily

The world is currently suffering because of the coronavirus pandemic. Many people are turning to vitamin supplements to boost their immunity and prevent themselves from catching COVID-19. But there are some things left unsaid about these supplements, including how toxic they can get when taken in excess.

Among the vitamin supplements that are very in demand these days is vitamin E. Since the human body cannot produce it, it must be obtained from the diet and/or supplements. Vitamin E is actually a collective term for a group of fat-soluble compounds that have antioxidant properties.

Apart from its antioxidant properties, vitamin E is also involved in certain bodily functions that promote immunity and carry out metabolic processes. But just because the body is incapable of producing it, that does not mean that we should take this vitamin in large doses.

According to the National Institutes of Health, the Dietary Reference Intakes guide made by the Food and Nutrition Board at the Institute of Medicine of The National Academies only recommends 15 mg of vitamin E per day for people 14 years of age and beyond. The recommended dose for 13 years and below range from 4 mg to 11 mg.

When vitamin E is taken in excess, certain health complications could develop. Too much of this vitamin could lead to blood thinning and fatal bleeding after an injury. A study has even linked vitamin E toxicity to increased hemorrhagic stroke risk. This is a stroke that is caused by bleeding in the brain.

Many people take vitamin E supplements thinking that it could decrease their risk of having certain cancers, improve their overall immune system and enjoy the anti-aging effects that come with the vitamins antioxidant properties.

However, Healthline says there is no need to take vitamin E supplements unless you are deficient of this nurtirent. The vitamin E content that is obtained from the diet is already enough. It is also best to consult with a health care provider or a medical professional first before deciding on purchasing and consuming vitamin E supplements.
