For successful weight loss and sustainable, we must look at the person in whole and not only addressing the weight separately.

Thats why, subject each patient to a detailed study: We analyzed the metabolic function: how the patient is beginning to develop insulin resistance? We observed the hormone, such an important part of the weight gain in the menopause. We investigated the levels of thyroid and cortisol. We have in mind the habits: why do most of us behave well all day and we crashed for the night? We evaluate the stress and sleep. We talk about mood and mental health. Fradin-Read also emphasizes that the notion of the pleasure of eating is at the base of a successful diet in the long term. For this reason, it is important to create a personalized diet for each person and that is not always the sameWe are all different when it comes to our weight and, therefore, the same diet that works for one person might not work at another; it may even be that not even serve for the same person during all his life.

First recommend structural changes in the style of life, rebalancing the hormones and finally, prescribe appropriate drugs

Adaptogens And Why They’re Good For Longevity – Longevity LIVE

Including healing adaptogens in your health regime is important for your longevity. Most simply put, they help push your body into recovery mode so that its able to restore itself before the next rush of fight or flight response. Adaptogens are extracted from non-toxic plants Turmeric, ashwagandha, rhodiola, cordyceps, and ginseng which help regulate the bodys stress response.

Over years of evolution, our bodies have learned to protect us from stressors by fighting or going into flight. The body does this to clear your mind, boost your energy and improve your focus. Its a survival instinct to keep us intact when we try to escape the situation. Basically so you dont die. However, we no longer have to face beasts, dangerous sabre-toothed tigers or cavemen. Back then humans only experienced these threatening situations now and then. Nowadays were faced with continuous, chronic stress from work, traffic, family, and finances. This is seriously bad for the body and keeps us in fight or flight for longer than its meant to be.

Sitting with prolonged chronic stress can seriously damage your health, mood, and quality of life over time. It ages you. Especially during COVID-19, when times are very unsettling. Fortunately, nature has a solution where healing adaptogens bring us the right kind of nutrition. These plant compounds can help us get out of the fight or flight state so that our bodies and minds can recover and restore themselves.

Its true that stress is a killer because it ages you. The more anxious our minds are the less were able to focus and perform. Thats why we need to ingest healing adaptogens regularly to stay younger for longer.

The word adaptogen originates from 1950s. They were first used as medicinal herbs all the way back in 3000 B.C., in Ancient Chinese and Ayurveda practices. Russian toxicologist Nikolay Lazarev, defined healing adaptogens as plants that increase the state of non-specific resistance when applied to stress. This means they can help protect the body against a range of stressors.

Moreover, healing adaptogens are herbs and plants with special properties that are naturally occurring in nature and can help the body resist emotional or physical stressors. They help heal stress, fatigue and work by targeting the bodys three stages of stress:

Now you can imagine being in a prolonged state of stress will inevitably result in pure exhaustion or burn out. You might be familiar with some healing adaptogens including turmeric, goji berries, maca root and various types of mushrooms. There is a very long list so there are loads to try!

Note that adaptogens are extracted from non-toxic plants which help regulate the bodys stress response. They can come from herbs, mushrooms, and roots. Most of which have been used for centuries in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. Scientists believe that these plant compounds work by acting on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. This involves the interaction between the brain and adrenal glands. Otherwise called the Sympathoadrenal System. This is thepart of the nervous system that helps control the bodys stress response.

Health researchers articles state that healing adaptogens might help boost focus and endurance during tiring situations. This is particularly important for those times when you would normally feel very fatigued and weak which might decrease performance. Healing adaptogens may also help the body resist stress-induced impairments of the neuroendocrine and immune systems.

Some research suggests that healing adaptogens might even benefit those with age-related disorders and cardiovascular problems. This means that elderly people may be able to maintain their health status on a normal level, improve their quality of life and even increase longevity. Doctors also believe that adaptogens could help support standard therapies used to aid patients fighting a range of health issues.

There are many reasons why we should all be using these plant compounds to live better, longer lives. Not only do they help fight daily stressors, but they also promote a more calm and stress-free mental state. If you are less stressed you will have a much stronger immune system which is what we all need during this pandemic. Healing adaptogens also come in a variety of forms like fermented adaptogen powders to help the body address the effects of stress in a natural way.

Theyre said to improve cognitive function and mood, increase energy levels, assist with stress management, and help mental fatigue. We know they help with stress. However, they allow the body to maintain the resistance phase of general adaptation syndrome for longer. This means you will be able to avoid hitting the exhaustion phase. This means youre bulletproof when facing stress or both mental and physical stress. Whenever your heart rate goes up and the adrenaline pumps, a lot of cortisol is released. You might feel more alert and energized so youre able to protect yourself from whatever is threatening you.

But then the body needs to resist, you know straight after a presentation, intense workout or stressful exam. The body needs time to recover from the trauma of the event. More importantly, it has to restore your normal blood pressure and cortisol levels. You will be fine if the stress subsides because your body will return itself to its pre-stress state. However, if stress lingers long term and you remain on alert, your body will try to adapt to this condition.

This is not good. Your body startsrecognizing it as the new normal. Therefore you start learning to live with stress. This is acceptable, to a degree, but if your body continues at this level between alarm and resistance for a while, without time for proper recovery, stress will overtake the body and youll enter Stage 3 of GASexhaustion.

Yes, this is the part where you might feel like you just cant continue. This is the point where youve hit exhaustion and start to feel extremely anxious and tired, moody and maybe even sick. High-stress levels make you more likely to get sick which means you need rest otherwise youll see a serious decline in health and performance.

Luckily, healing adaptogens help keep you in the resistance phase of GAS longer. This means your body has time to recharge itself before any major damage is done. Scientists believe that adaptogens have a stimulatory effect, revving up the recovery process that supports healthy stress hormone levels.

It is very important to know what works best for your body. Everyone responds to healing adaptogens differently. Your friend might be using a particular compound, but It might not have the same effect on you. Thats why if you choose to experiment with adaptogensBe sure to so try them one at a time to determine the exact effect each has on you.

There are a range of benefits by taking a daily adaptogen supplement. Particularly if you want to regulate cortisol levels and improve athletic performance. You get capsules, tablets, tinctures and powders which can be mixed with water or sprinkled on food.

Most healing adaptogens are considered safe, but if youre unsure, it may be best to consult your doctor before adding them to your diet. Especially if youre taking chronic medication. Certain herbal supplements can cause mild allergic reactions or some digestive discomfort.

Experts explain that adaptogens are great at regulating the stress response. However, they may not be for everyone. Just like anything else out there. It needs to be if youve got an autoimmune disorder or youre taking an immunosuppressant. Moreover, adaptogens can cause the immune system to become more active. This is brilliant news for generally healthy people. However, it can cause complications for those whose immune systems already arent working properly.

Every adaptogen is unique in what it can do. They all have benefits but you need to know what each could help you with.

This herb is fantastic at managing due to its curcumin content. Studies state that curcumin aids in regulating inflammatory responses, which helps exercise recovery and muscle soreness. This is great for athletes who want to increase their performance. Better yet, turmeric may be an ideal supplement for just about anyone.

Note that curcumin alone is not very helpful, due to its poor bioavailability. To increase its absorption and effectiveness, always include black pepper, piperine. This increases bioavailability by 2000%. Why? Because pepper inhibits enzymes that break down curcumin in the body. Curcumin is also fat-soluble so combining it with lipids will help absorption even more.

This is a traditional herb that originates in India and could be one of the most powerful and diverse adaptogens. Healing adaptogens like this once can help enhance your health and performance. Studies have discovered that supplementing with ashwagandha can also improve your resistance to stress. This is powerful because your quality of life will be much higher. Moreover, people (about 30%) who were severely stressed also saw a significant reduction in cortisol levels when using ashwagandha.

Not only does this supplement get you out of flight or fight mode, but it also helps your aerobic endurance and strength performance. Amazingly, you might even notice an increase in the development of muscle mass. Researchers believe that healing adaptogens like this one could even help reaction time and performance on cognitive and psychomotor tasks.

If youve never heard of this one, dont stress, neither have many others.

This adaptogen grows as a flowering plant found in the arctic regions. Apparently, it can help improve stress, fatigue, athletic performance and energy levels. Researchers have learned that taking rhodiola for only four weeks can help reduce the symptoms of stressful life situations.

Another study showed it helped boost participants time to exhaustion by 24 seconds during endurance exercise. Wowee!

Used traditionally in Chinese medicine, this is a hybrid fungus that can be used for many reasons. Researchers say that its mainly used today as a performance-boosting supplement. Cordyceps are rich in adenosine, which is a component of ATP. This is the energy source the body uses for all its movements. Therefore, experts believe that cordyceps can help ATP production, which might promote endurance performance.

Other alternative medical studies show that supplementing with cordyceps may help boost metabolic thresholds. This is a marker of aerobic performance in older people. In addition, studies found that cordyceps militaries, which is a synthetic form of Cordyceps. It is also part of a mushroom blend and can aid performance with respect to time to exhaustion during exercise, and VO2 max.

The secret is pairing these with other healing adaptogens like ashwagandha, rhodiola, and astragalus. This will help to promote daily energy and exercise performance. If youre passionate about exercise, then youve got even more reason to take more healing adaptogens especially pre-workout. This will help support you from the beginning of the workout through to the recovery phase. You wont feel as exhausted and will be able to recover a little more quickly, not only during the workout but also for the next session.

Another powerful plant thats particularly famous in Chinese medicine. Healing adaptogens like this one are brilliant at fighting inflammatory responses and helping to boost immunity and cognitive function. This is mainly because of the compounds ginsenosides and gintonin.

Korean studies take ginseng or a placebo a week prior to exercise and four days afterwards. Seventy-two hours after the workout, the ginseng users had significantly lowered markers of muscle damage. Other studies have demonstrated a boost in cellular health when women took ginseng for 12 weeks.

Researchers also state that Ginseng can help keep you feeling calm. You will also be able to concentrate and focus better on tasks within only eight days of usage.

So if youre feeling particularly stressed or anxious right now during the pandemic, then you might want to give Ginseng and other healing adaptogens a try.

We need to learn to manage stress better. When this happens, it can cause a cascade of other problemsmentally, physically and emotionally. Heres what to do.

Judge orders Utahn to stop touting silver products as COVID-19 cure – KSL.com

SALT LAKE CITY A Cedar Hills man who prosecutors say has been fraudulently marketing silver products as a cure for the new coronavirus, has been ordered by a federal judge to stop selling those items.

On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge David Barlow issued a temporary restraining order against Gordon Pedersen, 60, and his companies, My Doctor Suggests LLC and GP Silver LLC. The injunction comes on the heels of a civil complaint filed Monday in Salt Lake City against Pedersen by U.S. Attorney for Utah John Huber.

The civil complaint alleges that the defendants are fraudulently promoting and selling various silver products for the treatment and prevention of COVID-19, according to a statement from Hubers office. The defendants have made a wide variety of false and misleading claims touting silver products as a preventative for COVID-19, including that having silver in the bloodstream will usher any coronavirus out of the body and that it has been proven that alkaline structured silver will destroy all forms of viruses, (and) it will protect people from the coronavirus.

Pedersen and his companies have promoted silver products as a treatment for various diseases, including arthritis, diabetes, influenza and pneumonia since about 2014, the civil complaint states. These items are marketed under various names such as Silver Solution, Silver Gel, Silver Soap and Silver Lozenge.

In early 2020, Pedersen and My Doctor Suggests started contending that the silver products also cured COVID-19, according to court documents.

Gordon Pedersen falsely claims that My Doctor Suggests silver products can destroy coronavirus, and remove it from the body, assuring the user will never get COVID-19, the complaint states.

In his online sales pitches, Pedersen refers to himself as a doctor and often gives his sales pitch in a white coat with a stethoscope around his shoulders, creating the appearance of a treating physician, even though ... Pedersen does not hold a doctor of medicine degree, and is not licensed as a medical provider in the state of Utah, the complaint alleges.

According to the Silver Health Institute website: Dr. Pedersen holds four doctors degrees. He has a doctorate of naturopathic medicine. He has a Ph.D. from the toxicology program at Utah State University, where he also has Ph.D. degrees in immunology and biology. He is board certified in anti-aging and regenerative medicine and also holds a masters degree in cardiac rehabilitation and wellness.

Defendants are creating a false sense of security that may cause consumers to avoid conventional medical treatment and to ignore travel restrictions and social distancing that slow the spread of COVID-19.Court documents

In one of his YouTube videos promoting a silver hand sanitizer, Pedersen says he is going to go out and shake hands with people, doctors, patients, people who are infected possibly with the flu ... and Im going to have a confidence level that I have protection, court documents state.

In a podcast interview in March, Pedersen claimed, If you have the silver in you, when the virus arrives, the silver can isolate and eliminate that virus, the complaint states. In the same podcast, Pedersen said he could freely travel and was even going on a cruise ship, but was confident he would not catch COVID-19 because of his products.

Prosecutors noted in court documents that the list prices on the My Doctor Suggests website range up to $299.95 for a gallon of the silver solution, a mix of water, sodium bicarbonate commonly known as baking soda and extract from silver wire the companys self-described flagship product.

Prosecutors further noted, There is no recognized cure for COVID-19, and no drug product has been proven safe and effective for the prevention, treatment or cure of COVID-19.

Even Pedersen knows silver products are not a proven cure or treatment for COVID-19, the complaint states. They are also aware that they cannot legally promote My Doctor Suggests silver products for the prevention and/or treatment of COVID-19, and distribute them in interstate commerce. Indeed, defendant Pedersen has stated that, We are not a cure for the coronavirus there is none, and acknowledged that he does not actually know whether the products kill coronavirus.

Prosecutors described Pedersens actions as reckless and harmful to consumers, the complaint says.

Defendants are creating a false sense of security that may cause consumers to avoid conventional medical treatment and to ignore travel restrictions and social distancing that slow the spread of COVID-19, court documents state.

A federal court also froze all of Pedersens and his companies assets on Wednesday.

Even in a time of great uncertainty, there are at least two unchanging realities. There are those who would unlawfully exploit our vulnerabilities, and there are those who will hold such parties accountable, Huber said in a prepared statement. COVID-19 is a dangerous disease, and American consumers must have accurate and reliable information as they make important health decisions.

In issuing the restraining orders, Barlow wrote, There is good cause to believe that immediate and irreparable harm will result from defendants ongoing violations unless they are forced to stop, and that any harm a temporary restraining may cause to Pedersens businesses is greatly outweighed by the threat to the health and safety of individuals relying on defendants products and the representations regarding those products and to the public generally.

A hearing on the preliminary injunction is scheduled for May 12. As of Wednesday afternoon, the My Doctor Suggests website was offline.

The One Spice That May Actually Help Reduce Skin Inflammation, According To Doctors – SheFinds

For better or for worse, what you eat really does impact your skin. If youre experiencing inflamed skin this winter, weve reached out to health experts, doctors and dietitians and learned more about an all-natural spice that is not only an antioxidant, but also has the power to reduce skin inflammation. Read on for more information on its many skin and health benefits, and expert-approved meal ideas containing this special ingredient.

Turmeric is a spice that derives from the root of the curcuma longa plant, and a perennial in the ginger family. It iscultivated in many states in India and other East Asian nations. As dermatologist Dr. Purvisha Patel, M.D. explains, it is a beloved and historically used tool in skincare and healthy eating.

Turmeric hasbeen used for centuries in Eastern medicine to combat cancers, auto-immune diseases and skin conditions such as psoriasis, vitiligo and acne, says Patel. It has been shown in scientific studies time and time again to help skin conditions, both when ingested and used topically.

Patel notes that turmerics bright yellow color can be attributed to Curcumin, its active ingredient. Curcumin is anti-inflammatory, anti-micribial, anti-neoplastic and has antioxidant properties, as it combats free radical damage, says Patel.

Registered dietitian and nutritionist Susan Kelly reiterates that turmeric contains the component Curcumin that gives it a distinct colorand taste. It is used in various modern-day medicines, she says, because of its strong anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial properties.

"Aging and other skin inflammatory diseases are caused by oxidative damage," says Kelly. "In this process, free radicals react with organic substances, which can cause skin damage."

Curcumin, Kelly says, not only fights these radicals but also "stimulates the antioxidant mechanism in our body," which makes it the "best choice" to fight against skin inflammation and other skin concerns.

Dr. Cheryl Rosen, Director of Dermatology at BowTied Life says that turmeric is one of the most widely studied natural remedies, with research showing it can help treat skin inflammation caused by eczema, psoriasis and acne.

She also agrees that curcuminoids are responsible for turmeric's healing properties because "they're able to reduce pro-inflammatory molecules in our bodies" while increasing antioxidant levels."This spice is definitely worth trying if you have any inflammatory issues," says Rosen.

Now that you know the many skin and health benefits turmeric and its component Curcumin can have, it's time to think about adding it to your own diet.

Dietitian and Wellness Professional Holli Rovenger suggests adding it to "a variety of foods" such as scrambled eggs, omelettes, frittatas, soups, casseroles, vegetables and even in smoothies.

The possibilities are truly endless!

DUBLIN, Aug. 21, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- The "Squalene Market by Source Type (Animal Source (Shark Liver Oil), Vegetable Source (Olive Oil, Palm Oil, Amaranth Oil), Biosynthetic (GM Yeast]), End-use Industry (Cosmetics, Food, and Pharmaceuticals), and Region - Global Forecast to 2025" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.

The global squalene market was worth USD 140 million in 2019 and is projected to reach USD 184.4 million by 2025, growing at a CAGR of 7.3% between 2020 and 2025.

The growth in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industry is expected to drive the squalene market.

The squalene market is driven mainly by increasing sales of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. The growing cosmetics industry in emerging markets such as Brazil, China, and India; increasing consumer awareness of the usage of high-quality cosmetic products; and willingness to pay premium prices are driving the cosmetics industry at the global level.

The growth in the pharmaceutical industry will be a major driver for the demand for squalene in the future. Increasing R&D in the oncology segment along with increasing spending on oncology medicine is expected to drive the market for squalene in the coming years. Additionally, the rising awareness about the beneficial properties of squalene such as anti-oxidation, anti-aging, strengthening of the immune system, and UV protection is driving the growth of the market.

Biosynthetic expected to be the fastest-growing segment of the squalene market, in terms of value, between 2020 and 2025.

The biosynthetic segment is expected to witness the highest growth in terms of value during the forecast period. With skepticism about the shark liver oil sourced from sharks and low concentration of squalene in vegetable sources, the supply is fluctuating, keeping the prices volatile.

As several limitations are introduced for shark fishing, the supply of squalene has been majorly affected. While in the vegetable sources, squalene content is very low. Therefore tons of olives and amaranth are required to produce a small quantity of squalene.

Collectively, these reasons have led to high squalene retail prices. Hence, sugarcane and other sugar-containing bio-materials have been identified as a source for producing squalene. This biosynthetic squalene is available at relatively lower prices; thus, the market for biosynthetic squalene is expected to grow at a high rate during the forecast period.

The cosmetics industry is estimated to account for the largest share of the overall squalene market, in terms of value, between 2020 and 2025.

Cosmetics is the largest end-use industry of squalene due to its increasing usage in skincare products manufacturing. The demand for natural cosmetics with good quality has been the main driver for the growth of the market. The various beneficial properties and the natural occurrence of squalene is another factor responsible for the growth of this market. APAC primarily drives the growth of squalene containing products. The rising consumer awareness of using high-quality products and willingness to pay a premium price for the products are the major factors driving the demand.

A strong foothold of cosmetics manufacturers in France to drive the demand for squalene in Europe.

Europe's squalene market is estimated to be the largest during the forecast period. Due to the strong foothold of the key cosmetics product manufacturers and high demand for premium beauty products. The demand for high-quality products from cosmetics, food supplements, and pharmaceutical end-use industries is driving the squalene market in the region. The market witnessed a shift from animal-sourced squalene to vegetable-sourced squalene in the past years. The trend is anticipated to remain the same in the forecast period.

France accounted for the largest share in the region, followed by Germany, the U.K., Italy, and Spain. The high-spending power of consumers and the increasing demand for luxury products will continue to drive the squalene market in the region during the forecast period.

How Old Is Your Dog in Human Years? Scientists Develop Better Method than ‘Multiply by 7’ – UC San Diego Health

If theres one myth that has persisted through the years without much evidence, its this: multiply your dogs age by seven to calculate how old they are in human years. In other words, the old adage says, a four-year-old dog is similar in physiological age to a 28-year-old person.

But a new study by researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine throws that out the window. Instead, they created a formula that more accurately compares the ages of humans and dogs. The formula is based on the changing patterns of methyl groups in dog and human genomes how many of these chemical tags and where theyre located as they age. Since the two species dont age at the same rate over their lifespans, it turns out its not a perfectly linear comparison, as the 1:7 years rule-of-thumb would suggest.

To calculate your dogs age in human years based on epigenetics, find the dogs age along the bottom axis and trace your finger straight up until you reach the red curve. Then trace your finger straight over to the left to find the corresponding human age. Credit: Cell Press

The new methylation-based formula, published July 2 in Cell Systems, is the first that is transferrable across species. More than just a parlor trick, the researchers say it may provide a useful tool for veterinarians, and for evaluating anti-aging interventions.

There are a lot of anti-aging products out there these days with wildly varying degrees of scientific support, said senior author Trey Ideker, PhD, professor at UC San Diego School of Medicine and Moores Cancer Center. But how do you know if a product will truly extend your life without waiting 40 years or so? What if you could instead measure your age-associated methylation patterns before, during and after the intervention to see if its doing anything? Ideker led the study with first author Tina Wang, PhD, who was a graduate student in Idekers lab at the time.

The formula provides a new epigenetic clock, a method for determining the age of a cell, tissue or organism based on a readout of its epigenetics chemical modifications like methylation, which influence which genes are off or on without altering the inherited genetic sequence itself.

Epigenetic changes provide scientists with clues to a genomes age, Ideker said much like wrinkles on a persons face provide clues to their age.

Ideker and others have previously published epigenetic clocks for humans, but they are limited in that they may only be accurate for the specific individuals on whom the formulas were developed. They dont translate to other species, perhaps not even to other people.

Ideker said it was Wang who first brought the dog idea to him.

We always look at humans, but humans are kind of boring, he said. So she convinced me we should study dog aging in a comparative way.

To do that, Ideker and Wang collaborated with dog genetics experts Danika Bannasch, DVM, PhD, professor of population health and reproduction at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, and Elaine Ostrander, PhD, chief of the Cancer Genetics and Comparative Genomics Branch at the National Human Genome Research Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health. Bannasch provided blood samples from 105 Labrador retrievers. As the first to sequence the dog genome, Ostrander provided valuable input on analyzing it.

First author Tina Wang, PhD, (right) with her husband, Brandon, and their dog, Belli, who inspired the study. Photo courtesy of Tina Wang.

Dogs are an interesting animal to study, Ideker said. Given how closely they live with us, perhaps more than any other animal, a dogs environmental and chemical exposures are very similar to humans, and they receive nearly the same levels of health care. Its also important that we better understand their aging process, he said, as veterinarians frequently use the old 1:7 years ratio to determine a dogs age and use that information to guide diagnostic and treatment decisions.

What emerged from the study is a graph that can be used to match up the age of your dog with the comparable human age. The comparison is not a 1:7 ratio over time. Especially when dogs are young, they age rapidly compared to humans. A one-year-old dog is similar to a 30-year-old human. A four-year-old dog is similar to a 52-year-old human. Then by seven years old, dog aging slows.

This makes sense when you think about it after all, a nine-month-old dog can have puppies, so we already knew that the 1:7 ratio wasnt an accurate measure of age, Ideker said.

According to Ideker, one limitation of the new epigenetic clock is that it was developed using a single breed of dog, and some dog breeds are known to live longer than others. More research will be needed, but since its accurate for humans and mice as well as Labrador retrievers, he predicts the clock will apply to all dog breeds.

Next, the researchers plan to test other dog breeds, determine if the results hold up using saliva samples, and test mouse models to see what happens to their epigenetic markers when you try to prolong their lives with a variety of interventions.

Meanwhile, Ideker, like many other dog owners, is looking at his own canine companion a little differently now.

I have a six-year-old dog she still runs with me, but Im now realizing that shes not as young as I thought she was, Ideker said.

Autopsy: Hoping To Solve Mysteries Of Coronavirus – Anti Aging News

As in the past with autopsy, it is hoped that what is being learned from the dead, may help the living. When Amy Rapkiewicz began the process to learn how bodies of those who lost their battles to this virus went awry, the pathologist found damage to the lungs, kidneys, and liver that was consistent with what doctors had been reporting for months, yet something was off.

Rapkiewicz directs autopsies at NYU Langone Health, and when she was taking on the grim and daunting tasks she noticed some organs had far too many of a special cell that is rarely found in the places where it was. Though she had never seen it before it seemed familiar, and after researching history books she found reference to a 1960s report on a patient with dengue fever.

Rapkiewicz learned that in dengue the virus appeared to destroy these cells which produces platelets and leads to uncontrolled bleeding, and this novel virus seems to be amplifying their effects to cause dangerous clotting. Of the parallels she says: Covid-19 and dengue sound really different, but the cells that are involved are similar.

Autopsies have been used as a valuable source of information and breakthroughs leading to understanding new diseases for many decades, with this outbreak the medical community is counting on them to do the same for COVID-19. Hospital systems are too busy trying to save lives to spend too much time trying to reveal the secrets of the dead, but the first large batch of reports involving patients ranging between the ages of 32-90 have been published. Investigations have confirmed early suggestions of the disease and refuted others, but they have also opened up new mysteries about this pathogen.

Consistent across several studies is the finding that this virus appears to attack the lungs most viciously, and the pathogen was also found in parts of the brain, liver, kidneys, spleen, gastrointestinal tract, and in the endothelial cells that line blood vessels. Also as was suspected there was widespread clotting found in many organs. But the brain and heart revealed surprising findings.

Its about what we are not seeing, said Mary Fowkes, an associate professor of pathology who is part of a team at Mount Sinai Health that has performed autopsies on 67 COVID-19 patients.

Fowkes was expecting to find the virus or inflammation or both in the brain given the reports about neurological symptoms related to this virus, but there was very little and all autopsy investigations found no evidence of myocarditis in the heart despite months of concern over suspected cardiac complications.

Pathologists found another unexpected finding, that of the oxygen deprivation of the brain and the formation of blood clots may start early on in the disease process; this could have implications for how those with this disease are treated and home and if they need to be hospitalized.

Autopsies can help to reconstruct the natural course of disease, but the process for such a new and highly infectious disease requires dedicated and meticulous work with the use of specialized tools to harvest organs to be put into a disinfecting solutions for several weeks before they can be studied to avoid sending the virus into the air. After this process each organ must be sectioned and small bits of tissue must be collected to study under different types of microscopes.

One of the first American investigations to be made public was that of a 44 year old man who was treated in LSU Health; Richard Vander Heide who has been performing autopsies since 1994 remembers discovering what was probably hundreds or thousands of microclots in the lungs. This was something that was unusual that he has never seen before, but as he moved to the next patient and the next he saw the same pattern. He was so shocked and alarmed that he shared a paper online before submitting to a journal to get this information out immediately to all doctors; and his findings have influenced many hospitals to give blood thinners to some COVID-19 patients, and it is now a common practice. Subsequently the final peer reviewed version has been published in the Lancet.

Other autopsies have reported similar findings of clotting, and more recently a study published in the Lancets eClinical Medicine reports abnormal clotting in the heart, kidney, liver, and lungs leading the authors to suggest that this may be a cause of the multiple organ failure in COVID-19 patients.

One of the frightening early reports was the number of hospitalized patients appearing to have myocarditis that could lead to sudden death. Classic myocarditis is typically easy to identify in autopsies, as it occurs when the body perceives tissues to be foreign and attacks it causing large dead zones in the heart, and muscle cells would be surrounded by infection fighting lymphocytes cells. However thus far in the autopsy samples taken the dead myocytes were not surrounded by lymphocytes, only very mild inflammation has been seen on the surface of the heart but nothing that looks like myocarditis, according to Fowkes from Mount Sinai.

Rapkiewicz of NYU Langone was shocked at the abundance in the heart of the rare megakaryocytes cells, these cells produce platelets that control clotting, and typically exist only in bone marrow and lungs. Taking samples from COVID-19 patients lungs she discovered that those cells were in abundance there as well. I could not remember a case before where we saw that, she said. It was remarkable they were in the heart.

From LSU Vander Heide has a more in-depth paper that is under review in a journal explains that when you look at a covid heart, you dont see what youd expect. According to him a few autopsies he performed were on patients that had gone into cardiac arrest in the hospital, but after examination the primary damage was found in the lungs not in the heart.

A host of neurological impairments are also being reported including excessive sleepiness, reduced ability to smell or taste, altered mental status stroke, seizures, and delirium. 84% of patients in France in ICUs are reported to have had neurological problems with one third being confused or disoriented at discharge. In the UK one report suggests that 57 of 126 patients with a new neurological or psychiatric diagnosis experienced a stroke due to a blood clot in the brain, with 39 having an altered mental state.

Isaac Solomon, a neuropathologist at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston has conducted autopsies taking slices of key areas of the cerebral cortex, thalamus, basal ganglia, and others to investigate where this virus may be embedding itself into the brain. Each slice is divided into three dimensional grids, and 10 sections were taken from each to be studied. Solomon was only able to find snippets of the virus in some areas, and it was unclear whether they were dead remnants or active virus when the patient died; only small pockets of inflammation were found, but large swaths of damage due to oxygen deprivation was found. According to Solomon the pattern was eerily similar regardless of the patient suddenly dying or being in long term intensive care.

Findings underscore the importance of getting supplementary oxygen to patients quickly to prevent irreversible damage. Solomon has published a report in the New England Journal of Medicine, in it he suggests the findings suggest that the damage had been happening over a longer period of time, making him wonder about the effect on those who had been less ill.

The big lingering question is what happens to people who survive covid, said Solomon. Is there a lingering effect on the brain?

A Mount Sinai Health team took samples from brains, who were also shocked at the lack of virus and inflammation discovered, but they noted the widespread presence of tiny clots as being striking.

If you have one blood clot in the brain, we see that all the time. But what were seeing is, some patients are having multiple strokes in blood vessels that are in two or even three different territories, Fowkes said.

Rapkiewicz believes that it is too early to know whether the newest batch of autopsy reports can be translated into changes in treatment, but the information has revealed new paths to explore. One of her first calls was to Jeffrey Berger who is a cardiac specialist at NYU and runs a NIH funded lab focusing on platelets after she noticed the unusual platelet producing cells.

According to Berger the autopsies suggest that antiplatelet medications along with blood thinners may be useful for some of the symptoms of COVID-19, and he is pivoting a clinical trial to investigate the optimal doses while examining the effectiveness of such treatment.

Its only one piece of a very big puzzle, and we have a lot more to learn, said Berger. But if we can prevent significant complications and if more patients can survive the infection, that changes everything.

Back To The Gym: Get Fit And Stay Safe – Longevity LIVE

Across the world, gym lovers are looking forward to their gradual return to their facilities. In different countries, the stringent stay-at-home restrictions put in place to combat COVID-19 are slowly being lifted. Restaurants, parts of the travel industry, and yes, gyms, are in the process of reopening. But following all the global changes that came with the restrictions, eager gym goers will likely be returning to a setup that looks very different from what they remember.

Theres also a measure of uncertainty around whether it will, in fact, be safe to head back to the combination of spinning rooms, weight sections, and public bathrooms. And for good reason. After all, the gym tends to be a place where bacteria like to congregate. According to a study published in the National Library of Medicine, about 25% of surfaces tested in four different athletic training facilities (or gyms) featured a variety of germs. It included various pathogens, the flu virus, and other drug-resistant bacteria. On top of that, experts are warning of the coming of a second wave of coronavirus if restrictions are lifted too early. All in all, its safe to say that while you may be eagerly anticipating your next spin class, its best to approach the gym with caution.

In light of the lifting of restrictions for several public spaces, various medical professionals and organizations have released important safety advice regarding how to return to the gym. For your own safety and that of the surrounding people, its important to understand how to adapt to the new environment.

Depending on with whom your gym membership is, you will probably be receiving some of this information a while before the reopening of their doors. The Mayo Clinic recommends calling ahead and finding out whether they have implemented a limit on how many members are allowed at once. Make sure you are familiar with their guidelines on matters like social distancing. This way, you can follow them safely.

Also, check the following aspects with the gym staff:

If you used to attend group classes, ask about whether they will still be offered. If so, find out how many people will be allowed in a group so you can plan accordingly.

Its important that we realize there is a risk involved in going back to the gym. This is because much of the way we exercise has to do with touch, particularly if weights, rollers, mats, or stationary bikes are involved. Gym equipment can be difficult to clean properly, and this can increase your risk of getting infected. Implementing hygiene practices can help to reduce this, but its hard to eliminate completely.

Make sure your hands are clean before entering the gym. Try to avoid touching anything when you sign in, as this is where a lot of germs can collect. If your gym does not provide it for members, it may help to carry a disinfectant with you. That way, you can clean any equipment after youve used it. Use your own water bottle, and try to avoid the drinking fountain.

Its likely that your gym will have changed the setup so that users will be able to use the available equipment while remaining the recommended 6 feet (1.83 m) away from one another. Speaking to The New York Times, Dr. Deverick Anderson said that stationary bikes, treadmills, and elliptical machines can be taped off, removed from service, or moved apart to enable social distancing. Dr. Anderson is a professor of medicine and the director of the Duke Center for Antimicrobial Stewardship and Infection Prevention at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.

In the interest of keeping members a safe distance from one another, its important that your gym has good ventilation. When we exercise, heavy breathing produces lots of respiratory droplets. These can remain on the surfaces of the gym even after our session has ended. Dr. Blocken from the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands and KU Leuven in Belgium, recommends that the gym be well-ventilated. It should also preferably use a system that constantly refreshes the inside air with filtered air from outside. Otherwise, wide-open doors on both sides of the room should provide adequate ventilation.

The Mayo Clinic recommends that if you are at risk of illness, you wait before going back to the gym. Instead, opt for virtual classes if they are available, or make use of YouTube classes online. If you are showing any symptoms of the virus, self-isolate and get rest for at least two weeks before considering going to the gym again.

Considering youll probably need to book out a gym session, you need to structure your day so that you can optimize your fitness. Even with the limitations you might now be subject to. The benefits of working out on a physical and mental level are worth it. Click on this link to find out how you can get your best workout even when you dont feel like it.

Oxytocin: Benefits & How To Boost The Love Hormone – Longevity LIVE

You may know it as the love hormone, but theres more to oxytocin than the feel-good emotions it creates when you give someone a long and warm hug.

Oxytocin is an endorphin that helps to regulate social interaction, playing a pivotal role in bonding. Now while it is commonly referred to as the love hormone, it is anything but a love potion. The brain chemical wont make you instantly fall in love with someone. Rather, it will boost feelings of love, care as well as trust towards someone you already care for. That said, strengthening your social circles isnt all that oxytocin is good for.

According to research, oxytocin can help to improve relationships by enforcing sociable behavior. In fact, one study found that the love hormone not only helps to increase trust and generosity, but it also reduces the fear of betrayal. Additionally, an earlier studyfound that oxytocin helped topromote fidelity within monogamous relationships.

Oxytocin may be the boost that your sex life needs. According to German researchers, after being treated with oxytocin, female partners not only experienced improved sexual response but their male partners also experienced an improvement in their erectile function.

Neuroinflammation refers to inflammation of nervous tissue, most notably of the neurons in the developing brain.

That said, a recent studypublished in the Frontiers in Neurology journal suggests that oxytocin may play a role in the protection of the fetal and infant brain, particularly during gestation, birth trauma, as well as early growth.

While there have yet to be any human trials, oxytocin is currently being investigated for its potential role in drug addiction treatment. A 2017 study found that the love hormone helped reduce addictive behavior in animals.

During childbirth, oxytocin not only strengthens labor contractions but it also facilitates the production of prostaglandins, which are chemicals that help cause the cervix to dilate and contractions to occur. The brain chemical also helps to control bleeding after childbirth.

When a mother breastfeeds her newborn, the act stimulates the release of oxytocin and this helps to foster a strong loving and caring bond between mother and child.

Oxytocin may be the secret to anti-aging.

According to a study published in the Nature Communications journal, high levels of oxytocin may help to protect againstaccelerated signs of aging and it may even encourage better regeneration of aged tissue stem cells.

In a sense, yes. Oxytocin helps to strengthen the bond you have with those closest to you. Now while this is a good thing, it can also make you more overprotective and willing to do anything for them including lie or bend ethical rules. In fact, one study found thatthosewho received oxytocin were twice as likely to lie than usual.

Additionally, too much oxytocin can also make you less trustworthy of people outside your inner circle, and in the w10 orst cases, it can fuel prejudice, envy, aggression, as well as xenophobia (1).

According to research, autism, schizophrenia, depression, as well as anxiety disorders can each cause an oxytocin deficiency.

Additionally, high-stress levels can also cause a deficiency. Studies have found that as levels of the stress hormone cortisol go up, oxytocin levels go down. (2)

According to research, vitamin D helps to activate the brain hormones serotonin and oxytocin.

Now ideally, you should get your vitamin Dnaturally from the sunbut it can be hard to do so, especially in a pandemic. That said, you can either take avitamin D supplementor opt for vitamin D rich foods such as salmon and fortified vitamin D foods.

Vitamin C helps to stimulate the production of oxytocin. Now not only should you increase your vitamin C intaketo raise your oxytocin levels, but it can also help to strengthenyour immune system which we all need to do right now.

In addition to supplements, vitamin C can also be found in citrus fruits, tomatoes, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, as well as cabbage.

Magnesiumis a vital mineral thats involved in over300 biochemical reactions in your body, which includes increasing the action of oxytocin.

Up your magnesiumlevels by increasing your intake of spinach, chard, pumpkin seeds, almonds, avocado, dark chocolate, as well as bananas.

Chamomile is a great calming tea, so much so that it helps to increase oxytocin levels all while lowering levels of cortisol(3).

Now, this may be a little hard to do with the social distancing regulations. However, if youre on lockdown with your family, and theyve each been tested, then theres no reason as to why you cant give them a long hug.

In addition to increasing your oxytocin levels, a10-second hug every day can also help to boost your immune systemand improve heart health.

Daily meditation is great for your health and mood. That said, loving-kindness meditation (also known as metta) has been found to increase your love-hormone levels as well as increase your sense of connection as well as strengthen your relationships with others.

Animals are our best friends and if you have any pets, playing with them can help to lower your blood pressure as well as increase your oxytocin levels.

In fact, one studyfound that oxytocin levels increased in both humans and dogs after just five minutes of petting.

Music is incredibly healing and it can do wonders for your oxytocin levels.

For instance, one study found that after listening to music for 30 minutes a day after open-heart surgery, patients had significantly higher levels of oxytocin compared to those who were simply told to rest in bed.

And its not just listening to the music that can help as singing along can also increase oxytocin levels. Its no wonder mothers are always singing lullabies to their newborns.

A little hard to do with the COVID-19 regulations, but thats nothing the magic of technology cant fix.

Calling, texting or checking in with your friends and family using various apps can help toincrease oxytocin levels. In fact, researchhas found thatyour brain releases more oxytocin during social contact and social bonding, and this can help to speed up healing from disease.

If you want to do some good, as well as boost your own oxytocin, then volunteering is a great way to go.

A study published in the Hormones and Behavior journal found that volunteering not only reduces your stress levels but it also increases oxytocin levels.

With the state of the world, there are plenty of ways you can do good from the comfort of your own home. Be it signing petitions in relation to social justice or donating to COVID-19 relief funds theres plenty of good you can do.

There are at least 20 different types of endorphins and each has a different function. That said, there are plenty of ways one cannaturally boost their levels of endorphins.

Benefits of Non-surgical Facelift and Neck lift

Nonsurgical facelift and neck lift are minimally invasive nonsurgical procedures used to rejuvenate and improve the appearance of your face and neck. The techniques used for nonsurgical facelift and neck lift do not require incisions, use of general anesthesia, or long stay at the hospital or clinic. There is no downtime with this technique and the side effects are very minimal. Nonsurgical facelift and neck lift techniques include the use of dermal fillers, botox and fat injections to rejuvenate, lift and improve the appearance of the face and neck.

Nonsurgical facelift and neck lift provides several benefits more than the surgical facelift and neck lift procedures. Instead of going through the rigorous, invasive and painful processes of surgical facelift and neck lift, it is best you opt for a simpler, noninvasive and painless facelift and neck lift procedure.

The benefits of nonsurgical facelift and neck lift include:

There are no downtime or recovery times Nonsurgical facelift and neck lift procedure require little or no downtime. After the treatment, you dont need to stay in the hospital for days because you can go back home immediately after the treatment. Also, you recover very fast after undergoing the treatment. You dont need to stay at home for weeks or months recovering from a nonsurgical treatment, unlike the surgical procedure whereby you may need to speed weeks or even months at home during recovery. You can still keep your appointments and continue your work after undergoing a nonsurgical facelift and face lift procedure.

It produces natural-looking and lasting results Nonsurgical facelift procedure involves the use of fillers, Botox and your own fat. The procedure does not involve incisions, unlike the surgical procedure that involves incision. Nonsurgical procedures use chemical substances that are found in your body to rejuvenate and improve the appearance of your facial skin and neck. It provides a more natural looking facial appearance than the surgical procedure. Also, there are no scars after undergoing a nonsurgical procedure.

It does not require the use of general anesthesia Nonsurgical facelift and neck lift treatments do not require the use of general anesthesia. This is a better option for people that are allergic to the substances used in producing the anesthesia. If you are allergic to any of the substances used in producing anesthesia, nonsurgical treatment is best for you.

The treatments are not as expensive as surgical procedures Nonsurgical facelift and neck lift procedure is relatively cheaper than surgical facelift and neck lift procedure. People who are on a budget can easily afford the nonsurgical facelift and neck lift treatment. Hence, it is better to opt for the nonsurgical option if you want to save costs.

It is faster Nonsurgical facelift procedures take a shorter time to be completed, unlike the surgical facelift and neck lift procedures. Surgical procedures require administration of general anesthetics, large incisions, and other things that take up a lot of time. You cannot go back to your job or continue with your activities for the day after undergoing surgical facelift and neck lift procedures but you can go back to your job or continue your activities for the day after undergoing nonsurgical facelift and neck lift procedures.

Patients experience little discomfort You dont experience pain or serious discomfort during or after nonsurgical facelift and neck lift procedures. The procedure doesnt involve large incisions; hence you only feel little or no discomfort. If you have a low threshold for pain, it is best you opt for nonsurgical facelift and neck lift treatment instead of the surgical procedure.

It helps to enhance facial looks and eliminate wrinkles Nonsurgical facelift and neck lift treatment helps to enhance your facial and neck appearance with ease. You can experience almost immediate results after undergoing nonsurgical facelift and neck lift treatment.

Fewer risks Surgical facelift and neck lift procedures involve more risks and complications but there are little or minor complications with the nonsurgical facelift and neck lift procedure. The risks and complications that you may experience during and after undergoing a surgical facelift and neck lift procedure far outweigh the risk of nonsurgical facelift and neck lift procedure. It is best to opt for a nonsurgical facelift and neck lift treatment if you dont want to experience serious side effects or complications.

Carolyn Matzinger, MD Provides the Most Comprehensive Solution to Combat Fear and Effects of Covid-19 – Nevada Business Magazine

Las Vegas, NV Carolyn Matzinger, MD of Matzinger Institute of Healing (MIH), is an Internal Medicine Specialist, and leader in Cellular and Membrane/Metabolic Medicine. She has successfully treated 20,000+ patients, and is recognized for proven results in restoring total body health and improving the quality of life for patients diagnosed with various medical conditions, including: Lyme disease, Mold Toxicity, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, Neurodegenerative disorders, Dementia, Diabetes, Cancer, Autism, Seizures and more. Facts affirm the importance of a strong immune system. During this challenging time, she is encouraging people, now more than ever, to strengthen and maintain a healthy immune system as the best defense against the effects of the Covid-19 virus.

To help boost the health of Southern Nevada residents, Dr. Matzinger has developedtheMIHImmune Support Plan, monthly treatments (for 3 months) that consist of intravenous vitamin infusions (Myers Cocktails, Vitamin C, Vitamin B12 injections) and Infrared Saunas. These treatmentsoptimize the immune system and combat a myriad of opportunistic conditions caused from a weakened immune system. Dr. Matzinger extends special discounts and incentives MIH Immune Support Plan to our Veterans, First Responders, and 55+ Communities.

With the World Health Organization declaring the Covid-19 virus a pandemic combined with the Global lock-down and social distancing mandates, the spread of the virus will slow down. However, health, political, and economic uncertainties may continue rise of fear, anxiety and stress.Dr. Matzinger stated,We must shift our focusfrom fear of uncertainties tofacts and productivity, she adds,We mustremain calm. It is a fact that increased stress and anxiety increase cortisol levels, which then leads to heightened inflammation and a weakened immune system.Stayingwell is the number one priority. Stronger than a cure are prevention and total body health (vitamin infusions, Infrared Saunas, healthy eating, appropriate supplements, Medical Lipid Colon Cleanses, regular exercise, sufficient hydration, love and laughter).

The fact remains that people with weakened immune systems are more vulnerable to the severe effects of the virus.; those over the age of 55, post- Cancer patients and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions (such as Asthma, Diabetes, Heart Disease, etc.).Thereported cases and fatalities of the virus may increase before we witness a rapid decline, andindeed a vaccine will become available.Yet, even the swiftest efforts to develop a safe vaccine, perform proper clinical trials, and manufacture an adequate supply will take at least 10 to 18 months. Nonetheless, individual immune health is important to fight off a virus, to assure inactivation of the virus in a vaccine, along with allowing the body its ability to weaken the side-effects of a vaccine.

AsDr. Matzinger leads efforts tokeep our community healthy, build solutions, and help get our lives back, it is important to recognize the following key factors that makes her practice and the MIH Immune Support Plan exceptional: MIH Immune Support Plan and all treatments are administered by a Medical Doctor; Matzinger Institute of Healing offers the most effective customized treatment plans, based on extensive nutritional and diagnostic studies.

Virtual Event June 1 Explores Aging, Heart Disease and COVID-19 – Florida Tech Now

Johns Hopkins Professor Explains New Research on Protecting the Most Vulnerable

MELBOURNE, FLA. A medical doctor and researcher at Johns Hopkins University who leads human cardiovascular studies at the Laboratory of Cardiovascular Science at National Institutes of Healths National Institute on Aging will explore the intersection of aging, heart disease and COVID-19 during a free virtual workshop from 1-2:30 p.m. Monday, June 1, organized and hosted by Florida Tech.

Dr. Majd AlGhatrif will discuss why older adults with underlying cardiovascular disease are experiencing increased disease severity and higher mortality rates from COVID-19. These possible connections were highlighted in an April article in the Journal of the American Medical Associations JAMA Cardiology byAlGhatrif and Edward G. Lakatta, both of the Laboratory of Cardiovascular Science in NIAs Intramural Research Program, and Oscar Cingolani of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

In their article, the authors propose that using blockers for hormones called angiotensin that affect blood pressure may prevent severe COVID-19, particularly in older adults with low baseline levels of a key anti-inflammatory factor called angiotensin converting enzyme 2, or ACE2. However, this hypothesis needs to be tested in clinical trials with people who have COVID-19 to determine the safety and efficacy of these medications in reducing the risk of developing severe lung disease, they note.

In addition to AlGhatrifs presentation and question-and-answer segment, the event will feature short presentations about several efforts undertaken at Florida Tech in response to the pandemic. Those scheduled to present are:

Marco Carvalho, Ph.D., Florida Techs executive vice president for academics, will offer opening remarks.

How To Make Your Face Mask Your Breathing Friend And Filter – Longevity LIVE

Why might I get symptoms while wearing a face mask?

The ideal mask will allow for the easy flow of air (breathable) but will prevent the spread of droplets through it (impermeable).

If your mask does not allow air to flow through it, this could have negative effects on your health and well-being.

Typically, when we are worried or anxious, adrenaline causes us to take faster and shallower breaths. This leads to lower levels of carbon dioxide in the blood which in turn can cause dizziness, fatigue, headaches, chest pain, breathlessness, numbness and tingling, a feeling of disorientation or confusion, and increased emotionality.

If your mask is adequately breathable, it is more likely that symptoms experienced are related to your own breathing rather than the mask itself.

Medical grade masks are specifically designed to offer high level protection (impermeability) and adequateoxygenation (breathability) while undertaking highly skilled and high-risk tasks. While the public does not require medical grade masks, manufactured and home-made masks should offer the same level of breathability and reasonable impermeability.

A recent study done in Illinois demonstrated that a mask made with double layered T-shirt material (cotton or cotton/polyester blends) balances the best breathability with a 98% impermeability to droplet spread which performs equally to medical masks.

The only difference is that household materials will retain droplets rather than repel them, so it is important to hot wash (or dispose of) them after each use.

Breathing through the nose provides the benefit of the air being moistened and filtered. Nasal breathing also produces Nitric Oxide which kills viruses and bacteria.

Chasing The Elusive Dream Of A COVID Cure – Kaiser Health News

Although scientists and stock markets have celebrated the approval for emergency use of remdesivir to treat COVID-19, a cure for the disease that has killed nearly 260,000 people remains a long way off and might never arrive.

Hundreds of drugs are being studied around the world, but I dont see a lot of home runs right now, said Dr. Carlos del Rio, a professor of infectious diseases at the Emory University Rollins School of Public Health. I see a lot of strikeouts.

Researchers have launched more than 1,250 studies of COVID-19. Pharmaceutical companies are investing billions to develop effective drugs and vaccines to help end the pandemic.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was cautious when announcing the results of a clinical trial of remdesivir last week, noting it isnt a knockout. Although remdesivir helped hospitalized COVID-19 patients recover more quickly, it hasnt been proved to save lives.

This [drug] is opening the door, Fauci said. As more companies and investors get involved, its going to get better and better.

Researchers have already announced that they will combine remdesivir with an anti-inflammatory drug, baricitinib now used to treat rheumatoid arthritis in the hope of improving results.

But COVID-19 is an elusive enemy.

Doctors treating COVID patients say theyre fighting a war on multiple fronts, battling a virus that batters organs throughout the body, causes killer blood clots and prompts an immune system overreaction called a cytokine storm.

With so many parts of the body under siege at once, scientists say, improving survival rates will require multiple routes of attack and more than one drug. While some of the experimental medications target the virus, others aim to prevent the immune system from inflicting collateral damage.

There are so many pieces of this, and they will all require different therapies, said Dr. Lewis Kaplan, president of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, whose doctors provide intensive care.

High-tech approaches include using stem cells, virus-specific T cells and synthetic antibodies to neutralize the coronavirus.

Scientists are also taking a fresh look at existing medications that might be repurposed to fight COVID-19. These include antivirals for influenza, arthritis drugs, estrogen patches and even antacids. If repurposed drugs are successful, they could reach patients relatively quickly, because doctors are already familiar with their side effects and safety concerns.

Some doctors are skeptical that drugs for heartburn or hot flashes have any chance of treating a killer like COVID-19.

Dr. Steven Nissen, chair of cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic, said he fears that hype over unproven products will harm patients, even if it temporarily boosts company stock prices. Patients who demand antacids or antimalarial drugs being studied in COVID-19 could be harmed by side effects, for example. Those who hoard drugs on the hope of protecting themselves from COVID-19 could deprive other patients of medications they need to stay healthy. Some people may refuse to participate in clinical trials because they fear being given a placebo.

This rush to get every imaginable treatment into a study, its not prudent, Nissen said. Its not good medicine. Its an act of desperation.

Other experts say scientists should cast a wide net.

I dont think we want to rule anything out because it sounds out of the ordinary, said Dr. Walid Gellad, director of the Center for Pharmaceutical Policy and Prescribing at the University of Pittsburgh.

Antivirals In The Spotlight

Antivirals such as remdesivir aim to prevent viruses from replicating, said Dr. Peter Hotez, a professor at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

That doesnt always work. A small Chinese study of remdesivir, published last month in The Lancet, found no benefit to severely ill COVID-19 patients. Remdesivir had previously failed when tested against Ebola.

Antivirals tend to be most helpful in the early stages of infection, when most of the harm to the patient is caused by the virus itself, rather than the immune system, Hotez said.

Remdesivir is just one of many antivirals being tested against COVID-19.

International researchers are studying the antiviral favipiravir, developed to fight the flu.

The antimalarial drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine which have been heavily touted by President Donald Trump also have antiviral effects. Although the Food and Drug Administration approved forms of those drugs for emergency use against COVID-19, the agency later warned that they could cause dangerous heart rhythm problems.

A study in the New England Journal of Medicine likewise found no benefit in giving two antivirals used to treat HIV a combination of lopinavir and ritonavir, sold as Kaletra in adults hospitalized with severe COVID-19.

Harnessing The Immune System

One of the therapies generating excitement is also one of the oldest: antibody-rich blood from COVID survivors.

The immune system produces antibodies in response to invaders such as viruses and bacteria, allowing the body to recognize and neutralize them. Antibodies also recognize and neutralize the virus the next time that person is exposed.

Doctors hope that patients who develop antibodies against the novel coronavirus will become immune, at least for a few years, although this hasnt been proved.

Scientists developing this convalescent plasma are studying whether COVID-19 survivors can share this immunity with others by donating their plasma, the liquid part of blood that contains antibodies, said Dr. Shmuel Shoham, an associate professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

In addition to treating people who are already sick, donated plasma could potentially prevent people exposed to the virus such as health care workers from developing symptoms.

Donated antibodies and any immunity they might provide dont last forever, said Dr. William Schaffner, a professor at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The body destroys aging antibodies as part of its routine maintenance, he said. In general, half of donated antibodies are eliminated in about three weeks.

The use of convalescent plasma goes back more than a century. It was used during the 1918 flu pandemic and was shown to improve survival during the 2009-10 H1N1 pandemic.

Doctors dont know yet whether convalescent plasma will benefit people with COVID-19.

In general, convalescent plasma is expected to be more effective in preventing illness than in treating it. It may be less likely to help someone in intensive care, Shoham said.

Researchers are also studying the use of prepackaged plasma, called intravenous immunoglobulin, in COVID patients. This product, known as IVIG, is taken from healthy donors in the general population and has long been used to help patients with weakened immune systems fight off infections. Hospitals keep it in stock and some are already using it to treat COVID patients.

Although the antibodies in prepackaged IVIG dont specifically target the coronavirus, researchers hope they will tamp down the immune response.

In a third form of immune therapy, researchers are trying to identify the specific antibodies that are most important for neutralizing the coronavirus, then reproduce them as drugs called monoclonal antibodies. Monoclonal antibodies are already used to treat a variety of conditions, from cancer to rheumatoid arthritis and migraines.

When we give people an antibody, they are immediately at least partially immune to that specific virus, said Dr. James Crowe, director of the Vanderbilt Vaccine Center, who hopes to have antibodies ready for a clinical trial in a few months. Were moving the immune system from one person to another.

Ideally, doctors would develop a very potent monoclonal antibody or a cocktail of antibodies for COVID-19 patients, to ensure the best chance of success, Crowe said. But manufacturing these drugs can be complicated, expensive and time-consuming.

Making two antibodies would be at least twice as complicated as making one, Crowe said. A cocktail might be preferred, but cocktails are harder to move quickly.

Calming The Immune System

In most cases of COVID-19, the immune system neutralizes the coronavirus and patients recover without going to the hospital.

For reasons that doctors dont totally understand, the immune system of some COVID-19 patients becomes hyperactive, attacking not just the virus but the patients own cells. A cytokine storm, in which the immune system floods the body with inflammatory chemicals, can do more damage than the virus itself.

In an effort to calm the immune system, researchers are testing immune-suppressing drugs, including monoclonal antibodies already used to treat autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, said Dr. Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.

Health care giant Roche is conducting large clinical trials of its drug, Actemra, in the hope of preventing cytokine storms, which can cause organ failure and a life-threatening condition called sepsis. Actemra is designed to lower levels of an inflammatory chemical, interleukin-6, which has been found to be elevated in some COVID-19 patients.

Scientists are also studying similar drugs, anakinra and siltuximab.

Another immune suppressant from Regeneron and Sanofi, called Kevzara, has had disappointing results in clinical trials. The manufacturers plan to continue studying the drug to see if it can help certain types of patients.

Dr. Anar Yukhayev, a New York OB-GYN who was hospitalized with COVID-19 on March 16, agreed to join a clinical trial of Kevzara.

I was having so much trouble breathing that I was desperate for anything to help, said Yukhayev, 31, who was treated at Long Island Jewish Medical Center.

About 36 hours after receiving an infusion, as Yukhayev was being treated in intensive care, his symptoms began to improve. He was able to avoid being put on a ventilator. Doctors didnt tell him if he received Kevzara or a placebo, but his liver enzymes also began to rise, suggesting the organ was under stress. Elevated liver enzymes are a known side effect of Kevzara.

Yukhayev made a full recovery and went back to work full time April 13. He donated his plasma to researchers.

Until vaccines and other preventive medicines are developed, the best way to prevent coronavirus infections is to maintain social distancing, Adalja said.

Social distancing is a blunt tool, he said, but its all that we have.

Voyageur Secures Exclusive Rights To One Of The Worlds Rarest Pharmaceutical Minerals, Creating A New Era In Carbon Based Drug Development -…

CALGARY, Alberta, May 11, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (TSX.V:VM) (USA:VYYRF) (the Company or Voyageur) is pleased to announce it has signed an LOI with an established international mining company (the Counterparty) that has developed a low cost method to extract the natural occurring carbon molecule, C-60 to C-90, from large natural-occurring fullerene resources.

The technology to extract C-60 from natural fullerene deposits is ground-breaking and a first in this industry. Voyageur will be the first company to be able to mass produce C-60 at a low cost, allowing for multiple drug products to be developed, states Brent Willis, CEO of Voyageur Pharmaceuticals.

The barriers for C-60 based drugs has now been broken, which opens up the industry to develop new effective drugs and health care products on an economic scale, continues Brent Willis.

The API, C-60, is a natural, highly effective super antioxidant, like more common antioxidants (Vitamin C, Vitamin A and Selenium). It scavenges toxic free radicals but it stands out as a notable anti-aging innovation because it selectively scavenges the reactive oxygen species that do the most damage to humans as opposed to just working by osmosis like a normal antioxidant. The anti-aging properties are exciting, as studies in animals have shown the potential to significantly extend life span and to slow the aging process.

Voyageur has begun work on its first C-60 product, C-60X, an immune system booster, natural health product, for daily consumption. Voyageur is creating a C-60 R&D Therapeutics division that will be focused on developing natural health products and drugs. For early cash flow, Voyageur will utilize our Calgary-based manufacturing partners for natural health product sales.

Highlights of C-60 Medical Applications

"Thedifficulty inprocessingof fullerenes has presented a major problem in the search for medicinal applications. This is the breakthrough thatour partner hasrecentlyovercome. The patent-pending technology that can recover economic & high volumes of C-60 from natural fullerene mineral ores is a game changer. This opens the door for Voyageur to become the only company to have the capability to develop and mass produce C-60 based drugs and natural health products at a low cost & high volume, says Brent Willis.

Voyageur plans to develop low cost C-60 radiographic contrast drugs, which encapsulate iodine, gadolinium, and other potential molecules. By utilizing C-60, we may be able to enhance the performance and create the safest radiographic contrast media in the marketplace. Studies have shown that MRI C-60 gadolinium contrast media has a gain of a 500-fold sensitivity on intravital MR Contrast Agents.

Essentially, a carbon-60 molecule is comprised of 60 carbon atoms which are arranged in a unique shape that can be thought of as a 'carbon cage' (like a soccer ball). This sphere makes it possible to be a carrier of other molecules creating a protective shield, allowing C-60 to be an excellent drug delivery vehicle in radiology and healthcare.

This drug delivery system is quite unique to the pharmaceutical industry and our company is proud to begin the innovative steps to develop unique new delivery systems, states Brent Willis.

It has long been known that effective delivery systems are of paramount importance in promoting drug efficacy. This is not only a major milestone for our Company, but potentially a major breakthrough for the entire healthcare industry, continues Willis. The significance of the technological breakthrough, to extract natural fullerene from rock, may well pave the way for a low-cost evolution in the carbon-based health care market. Voyageur is the first company to begin to break down the barrier to market. New Study Suggests the Consequences of Oxidative Stress on Telomeres – Truth In Aging

A decade ago, scientists won the nobel prize for connecting the dots between telomeres and aging. Telomeres are the protective caps on the ends of the strands of DNA called chromosomes. Telomeres shorten every time a cell divides. When they become very short, they trigger cell crisis and cell death.

Since this discovery was made, researchers have found new insights into telomeres and their connection to wrinkled skin, as well as how their length might be extended.

Scientists have uncovered new information on telomeres that could help combat the effects of inflammation and aging. Researchers from the University of Pittsburg recently discovered how oxidative stress plays a critical in the link between telomeres and cancer. I dont want to blind you with science (telomeres are a complex area), but every breakthrough into telomeres will ultimately equal a breakthrough in understanding how we age and how we can keep cells including our skin cells healthy.

Telomeres are composed of repeated sequences of DNA. The results from this study suggest that the mechanism by which oxidative stress accelerates telomere shortening is by damaging the DNA precursor molecules, not the telomere itself. This will have a big impact on appreciating how to manage oxidative stress to prevent aging and diseases such as cancer.

At Stanford University School of Medicine, scientists claim they can now lengthen teleomeres. Skin cells with telomeres lengthened by the procedure were able to divide up to 40 more times than untreated cells (source).

However, longer teleomeres is not necessarily associated with a longer life (source). Indeed, those naysayers say that good diet and an exercise regimen will do that. Yet, it does seem that preventing further shortening of the telomeres could be beneficial, especially for aging skin. Telomeres are likened to the tips of shoelaces that stop them unraveling and so you really want to be thinking about how to stabilize your telomeres. Happily, advances in skin care can help you out. There are three approaches to consider: special ingredients that target telomeres, ingredients that prevent oxidative damage (known, of course, as antioxidants) and stem cells.

Target your telomeres

One very interesting ingredient is called astragalus, and although it is rare, we do have a couple of Truth In Aging finds with it. But first, what is it and how does it work? In 2008, a UCLA AIDS Institute study found that a chemical they called TAT2 from the astragalus root, which is frequently used in Chinese herbal therapy, can prevent or slow the progressive shortening of telomeres. It can be found in Prana Reishi Mushroom Shield ($42 in the shop) and ExPrtise Effective Anti-Aging Face Serum ($120 in the shop).

Another ingredient to look for is treprenone, also marketed under the name of Renovage. Its promise is to stabilize telomeres, so at the very least they won't shorten. Maintaining telomere length extends the Hayflick Limit (the rate at which cells turn over before conking out completely) by one third. Youll find treprenone (Renovage) in Your Best Face Correct ($150 in the shop) Your Best Face Boost ($65 in the shop.

Amp up with antioxidants

The research is clear: Preventing oxidative damage is the job of an antioxidant. Free radicals are charged chemical particles of oxygen that enter into destructive chemical bonds with organic substances such as proteins, as explained by Gerald Imber, MD. Antioxidants limit the production of free radicals and therefore help prevent oxidative stress. There are many sources in plants, and vitamins are also antioxidants.

There are 33 antioxidants in Skin 2 Skin Aging Intervention Cream ($73 in the shop), including the universal antioxidant alpha lipoic acid. The powerful antioxidants in Your Best Face Rescue ($145 in the shop) include spin trap, an advanced form of vitamin C and EGCG. Bee venom has some 18 active compounds include antioxidants, peptides with powerful anti-inflammatory actions, and enzymes. It is the key ingredient in LaCrme Beaut Luxurious Bee Venom Rich Face Treatment Cream ($202 in the shop).

Look for plant stem cells

Plant stem cells never age. British scientists found that plant stem cells were much more sensitive to DNA damage than other cells. Once they sense damage, they trigger death of these cells before it spreads and causes more. In addition, they have the ability to stimulate cell renewal and replace specific cells in need of repair.

Ao Skincare Raw Nourish AM Treatment ($65 in the shop) has the powerful antioxidant astaxanthin and plant stem cells.
