The author contends that at its deepest level, aging is driven by inappropriately high cellular functioning. The hyperfunction theory of quasi-programmed aging explains why COVID-19 vulnerability is an age-dependent syndrome, linking it to other age-related diseases.

These conditions are typical age-related diseases: hypertension, diabetes, obesity, ischemic heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and other diseases.

This is because pre-existing conditions are manifestations of biological age, ultimately meaning that A. aging and B. diseases are two sides of the same coin.

The Blagosklonny Research Teamgoes on to highlight that an anti-aging intervention, such as rapamycin, may slow aging and age-related diseases, potentially decreasing COVID-19 vulnerability.

The Aging-US Reviewalso reported that as soon as the COVID-19 epidemic started, it became clear that COVID-19 vulnerability is an aging-dependent condition, and the use of rapamycin was immediately suggested by independent researchers.

By decreasing biological age and preventing age-related diseases, long-term rapamycin therapy may, in theory, decrease the COVID-19 mortality rate in the elderly.

As specifically discussed in the Review section titled "Figuratively, rapamycin rejuvenates immunity", mTOR inhibitors can improve immunity to viral infections, improve immunization and vaccination to some viruses such as the flu.

The anti-aging and skin-healing effects of vitamin E – Insider – INSIDER

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that is found in foods like avocados, sunflower oil, and red bell peppers. When consumed orally, vitamin E has many benefits, including slowing the aging process of cells, boosting the immune system, and reducing premenstrual symptoms (PMC).

But for skin, vitamin E's main strength is its power as an antioxidant. Antioxidants help combat free radicals, which are unstable molecules that age our skin and damage cells.

While there are many proven benefits of vitamin E for skin health, there are also some myths that lack evidence. Here's what you need to know.

Vitamin E, in particular, is a potent antioxidant that can prevent sun damage to the skin, alleviate eczema, and more.

Free radicals are everywhere. They can be emitted from the sun, pollution, cigarette smoke, and a vast number of other sources. They show up naturally in our bodies, too. These unstable molecules can damage collagen and glycosaminoglycans, two substances that keep your skin smooth, firm, and moisturized.

Since vitamin E is a strong antioxidant, it can combat the effects of free radicals on your skin and protect it from visible signs of aging caused by these damaging molecules.

How to use it: You can use it topically and it is available in an cream, oil, or serum.

Free radicals from the sun can cause collagen and elastin in the skin to breakdown, which can trigger signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles. Since vitamin E has antioxidant properties, it can help fight signs of sun damage, says Caren Campbell, MD, a board-certified dermatologist with a private practice in San Francisco.

Additionally, using vitamin E in combination with vitamin C in topical formulations, like creams or serums, has been shown to prevent short term UV damage as well as chronic UV photodamage, like dark spots.

How to use it: To use vitamin E to fight sun damage, use it topically in creams, oils, or serums. Even though it may be able to prevent UV damage, it won't replace sunscreen.

One small 2015 study found that taking vitamin E supplements of 400 IU/day for four months was more effective at treating eczema symptoms including itching and lesions than a placebo.

However, more thorough research is needed before healthcare professionals should consider prescribing a vitamin E supplement to treat eczema, says Kathleen C. Suozzi, MD, dermatologist and aesthetics director of Yale Medicine Dermatology.

How to use it: To use vitamin E for eczema, consider taking it orally through a supplement. However, you should check with your doctor before starting any supplements, as Vitamin E can build up in the body to dangerous amounts if you regularly take too much.

Studies have shown that vitamin E may be helpful for psoriasis, however, these studies have not looked at vitamin E on its own.

One 2009 study looked at the supplementation of coenzyme Q10, vitamin E, and selenium in 58 patients with severe psoriasis. The study found that oxidative stress was reduced and clinical conditions of psoriasis were improved in patients who took the supplements versus those who took a placebo.

How to use it: More research needs to be done to confirm the efficacy of using vitamin E alone, but to use vitamin E for psoriasis, you can take it in the form of supplements. Again, check with your doctor before taking supplements.

There are also many unfounded claims about how vitamin E affects the skin:

Some people believe that vitamin E can help reduce scarring from wounds and acne. However, research has shown that topical application of Vitamin E to scars does not make a difference in the appearance of the scars, and may actually result in contact dermatitis.

There is anecdotal evidence that topical vitamin E can help prevent or reduce the appearance of stretch marks. Studies have not backed this up, though. According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, home remedies such as vitamin E for stretch marks are not effective.

The antioxidant properties of vitamin E could possibly make it useful for skin cancer prevention, says the Skin Cancer Foundation. However, hard research supporting this is weak, and it is best to use proven means of preventing skin cancer, like always using sunscreen.

Vitamin E isn't for everybody. Suozzi says that patients with sensitive skin may have negative reactions to topical vitamin E.

Additionally, those with eczema-prone skin may have bad reactions to topical vitamin E, so if you plan on using the vitamin for eczema, it's best to stick to consuming it orally.

Campbell also says that you should be cautious if you are taking vitamin E supplements. She says an excessive intake of vitamin E can cause GI side effects like:

Additionally, vitamin E reduces blood clotting, so Campbell says it can increase your risk of bleeding or bruising. She says you should definitely avoid taking it before any medical procedures.

Since scientific evidence is spotty for vitamin E in skincare, it may be best to consult your dermatologist before trying it out orally or topically.

A dermatologist can tell you if vitamin E is the right choice for you and whatever skin ailment you may be trying to treat, as well as how to use it safely.

A newly published study shows that a diet high in UPFs may contribute to biological aging processes at the cellular level. The researchers found a clear correlation between the level of UPF consumption and reduced telomere length. Sexual desire in males is not all about testosterone. A recent mouse study investigating the role of aromatase in the brain found that the enzyme plays an important role in sexual activity in males.

In mice that had no aromatase in their brains, sexual activity reduced by half, despite these mice having higher levels of testosterone than those in the control group. Mice that could not produce aromatase anywhere in their body showed no sexual activity at all.

Are antianxiety medications targeting the wrong system? Most anxiety treatments work on the nervous system but do not offer permanent relief from symptoms. This week, MNT reported on a small-scale study linking anxiety disorders to inflamed thyroid glands, which are part of the endocrine system.

If further investigation confirms this discovery, new treatment options may become available for the estimated 264 million people around the world who suffer from anxiety disorders. There is currently no cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a genetic disease that reduces life expectancy to an average of 26 years. However, this week, MNT reported on a potential new treatment.

Researchers at Yale University screened more than 160,000 compounds to find a molecule that blocks an enzyme, MKP5, which is known to destroy muscle tissue in people with DMD.

Scientists had considered MKP5 undruggable, but the new compound potently and selectively inhibits the enzyme. The compound may also be a candidate drug for other conditions that involve tissue scarring, including chronic liver disease.

A One Health approach, requiring the collaboration of human, animal, and environmental health partners, is key to preventing Leishmania cases in Canada and the US

Leishmania is a flesh-eating parasite that affects millions of people each year, in 98 countries and territories but isnt native to Canada and the United States. So why are veterinarians starting to report Leishmania here, so far from this parasites natural warm climate?

Leishmania are microscopic parasites transmitted by sandfly bites, and cause a disease called leishmaniosis. There are several forms of this disease, affecting the skin, mucous membranes and internal organs. Some forms of the disease lead to severe disfigurement, others death.

Leishmaniosis is classified as a neglected tropical disease by the World Health Organization, primarily affecting those in tropical and subtropical regions. The disease particularly affects populations lacking access to adequate housing and sanitation services.

Leishmaniosis is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans; dogs are the reservoir for this parasite.

Recently, veterinarians in the US and Canada have been detecting Leishmania in imported dogs: the disease has been detected in dogs in 18 states and two provinces.

Our laboratory received reports of at least 10 in Qubec within the span of a year. Soon after, we were presented with a case ourselves: a dog imported with suspected fight wounds later diagnosed to be Leishmania.

More and more, owners are travelling with their pets or importing animals from other countries. The regulations for bringing pets into Canada are lax generally, the only requirements are proof of rabies vaccination and a certificate from a veterinarian declaring the animal to be in apparent good health.

Furthermore, since many of the tests and diagnostic treatments for exotic diseases (including leishmaniosis) are unfamiliar or inaccessible in Canada, diagnosis and treatment are complicated.

This puts the health of the patient and ultimately the public, at risk.

Although the exact species of sandflies that transmit Leishmania are not present in Canada, reports of Leishmania maintaining itself within groups of kennelled foxhounds in 18 states and two provinces strongly suggest that the parasite can be transmitted from dog to dog: through bites, breeding or blood transfusions. In addition, it has recently been demonstrated that ticks can also transmit leishmaniosis.

Therefore, although unfortunate, Leishmania establishment in Canada and the US remains possible.

Treatment of leishmaniosis is currently limited to very few drugs, most of which have been in use for decades. In recent years, there has been an increase in Leishmania drug resistance and treatment failure.

Scientists, including us, are searching for clues to better understand how these parasites survive in the presence of anti-leishmanial drugs. A number of experiments have led us (and others) to focus on Leishmanias release of extracellular vesicles.

Extracellular vesicles are small, round particles with a fatty outer membrane, and they are produced by all living cells, including Leishmania parasites. Although tiny you need an electron microscope to see them these particles transport valuable cargo that ranges from DNA to fats and proteins. The contents of these vesicles provide a snapshot of their cell of origin, and can be delivered to nearby cells.

Recent studies have found that not only do the size and shape of these vesicles differ between sensitive and drug-resistant strains of Leishmania, but vesicles produced by drug-resistant parasites contain special drug-resistance molecules.

A better understanding of extracellular vesicles function is another step towards understanding how drug resistance spreads among Leishmania populations with the goal of preventing it.

Additionally, research has demonstrated that when an infected sandfly bites a human, its not just parasites that are injected into the bloodstream: extracellular vesicles come along too and are confronted by our immune system.

Studying extracellular vesicles may provide vital information for the development of new Leishmania therapies or a vaccine.

Unified approaches

Mandatory reporting of canine leishmaniosis cases by veterinarians, easy access to fast and reliable diagnostic tests and appropriate treatments and an overhaul of animal importation regulations are critical.

A One Health approach, requiring the collaboration of human, animal, and environmental health partners, is key to preventing Leishmania cases in Canada and the US.

The Underrated Anti-Inflammatory Nutrient That Will Help You Live Longer, According to a Functional Medicine Doctor – Well+Good

As one of the top functional medicine doctors in the country, Frank Lipman, MD, is asked a wide range of health-related questions every single day. Sometimes theyre tied to something specific trending in the wellness space: Is collagen overrated? (Nope.) Is oat milk? (Possibly.) Other times, its about how to get a better nights sleep. But all the queries seem to be rooted in an even bigger question: how to live a long, healthy life.

Longevity seems to be at the heart of every question hes asked, so Dr. Lipman decided to write a whole book dedicated to the topic: The New Rules of Aging Well: A Simple Program For Immunity Resilience, Strength, and Vitality ($20), out October 27, 2020. Tucked in the pages are some rules youre likely familiar with, like cutting back on sugar and having a strong sense of purpose. But there are also some surprising things that have been scientifically linked to longevity that arent as widely talked about. One of those truth bombs is centered around an anti-inflammatory compound called quercetin.

Never heard of it? Quercetin is a polyphenol derived in plants that is connected to lowering inflammation, supporting the immune system, and, yes, longevity. Besides curcumin, quercetin is one of the most important supplements for both immunity and longevity, Dr. Lipman says. Looks like turmeric has some competition.

Before we dig deep into all the benefits quercetin boasts, its helpful to know what the heck it actually is. Dr. Lipman explains that quercetin is a type of polyphenol, which are micronutrients with antioxidant properties found in plants. Some foods that have this particular type of polyphenol are apples, onion, raspberries, red grapes, and cherries.

Quercetin has lots of benefits, but Dr. Lipman is most excited about its connection with longevity.One is that it affects longevity gene pathways in a positive way, specifically activating AMPK [a protein enzyme], he says. AMPK helps regulate cellular metabolism; when cellular energy is low, AMPK is called in for backup to keep the body running as it should. It also controls cellular autophagy, aka the clearing out of damaged cells. And recent research suggests that the enzyme can potentially delay the aging process as well. One paper published in the journal Discoveries states that AMPK activation increased the life of fruit flies by as much as 30 percent.

Quercetin is anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and immunity-boosting, Dr. Lipman addsproperties that are important for longevity. To his point, chronic inflammation is associated with many age-related health problems, including cognitive decline and cancer, so managing inflammation is often seen as crucial for living a longer, healthier life. Meanwhile, the immune system weakens with age, making it harder for the body to fight off illness, so keeping it in tip-top shape is critical. Quercetin also supports gut health; since a huge portion of the immune system lies in the gut, keeping your gut healthy is very important to immunity, says Dr. Lipman.

Despite quercetin being in such a wide range of plant-based foods, Dr. Lipman says most people dont consume enough of it to truly benefit. Part of this is because most Americans dont eat enough fruits and vegetables, but even foods that naturally contain quercetin dont have very high doses of the polyphenol. This is why Dr. Lipman often recommends a quercetin supplement. (He actually has his own, Superpowder, $54, which he created for The Well as its chief medical officer.)

While certainly more studies need to be done on quercetin (particularly on humans, not fruit flies or rats), the evidence that suggests its connection to longevity is compelling. But Dr. Lipman reiterates that it, like anything else, certainly isnt a silver bullet for being a healthy octogenarian.

One of the most important things for longevity is getting enough sleep, he says. We have a glymphatic system in the brain, which is the brains self-cleaning mechanism, and it only works when youre asleep. Not getting enough sleep makes it harder for the glymphatic system to do its clean-up job, which over time can lead to cognitive decline, Dr. Lipman says.

Are You Gassy And Bloated? – Anti Aging News

Is your tummy making loud noises, maybe you are too full to move around, pants feel too tight, feels like a hardball in your midsection, whatever symptom you are experiencing being gassy and bloated is not a good feeling.

While there is no denying that diet contributes to gut health, there are still many potential causes of uncomfortable gastrointestinal symptoms. Typically when experienced after eating it most likely due to byproducts that are created by bacteria in the GI Tract to help break down food because eating increases the water content in the gut and drawing in fluids can make one feel bloated.

"In general, diet is probably the main driver of a lot of GI symptoms," says Shanti Eswaran, MD, a gastroenterologist and internist at Michigan Medicine. "What we eat moves through our body and undergoes transformations as it's broken down by enzymes and bacteria in the GI tract."

According to Eswaran the primary cause of gas and bloating is IBS which can be caused by a range of things with the hallmarks being abdominal pain, discomfort, and altered bowel function including constipation and diarrhea. Those with IBS tend to experience increased pain or bloating after eating.

To help avoid experiencing gas and bloating try to eat smaller meals throughout the day and avoid carbonated beverages. Vitamin D deficiencies are prevalent among those with IBS, but this nutrient deficiency is not unique to this population of people.

"The majority of adults living in certain geographies or who lead indoor lifestyles tend to have low vitamin D levels and they are generally related to lack of sun exposure, though obesity is another risk factor," says Tamara Duker Freuman, RDN.

A report published in the International Journal of Preventive Medicine suggests that vitamin D supplementation helps to significantly improve the severity of symptoms and disease-specific quality of life for those with IBS compared to those without.

But according to Eswaran supplementation on its own may not solve all gut-specific symptoms. "However, it may improve general symptoms associated with vitamin D deficiency such as brain fog and fatigue, and if you're feeling well overall, it's possible that your GI symptoms may not bother you as much."

In addition to supplementation, one can naturally obtain vitamin D by spending some time in the sun, in some foods such as egg yolk, mushrooms, fatty fish, and fortified foods.

Fibre may or may not be beneficial for those that experience gas and bloating, for some a high fibre diet can induce or exacerbate gas and bloating while for others a low fibre diet can do the same thing. To add to that high intake of fibre may lead to some experiencing these symptoms as the result of a high stool burden or more fibre going in than is going out which can cause stool to build up, and to add to the confusion a diet lacking in fibre can also result in tummy troubles.

"Everyone is different, and you have to evaluate each case of bloating individually to understand what's behind it," Freuman notes. "The same remedy that helps alleviate symptoms in one person can worsen symptoms in someone else.

"People with chronically low fiber intake can also experience intestinal gas or bloating if their low fiber intake results in chronic constipation and/or incomplete defecation of hard, small stools," adds Freuman.

"However, if someone is bloated due to constipation from a low fiber diet, the right answer is to add fiber very gradually, possibly in tandem with a gentle bowel regimen (or laxative) to help clear out residual stool that is causing a backup so that the fiber will be tolerated better," says Freuman.

To boost fibre intake while minimizing the risk of worsening gas and bloating try to eat fibre-containing foods that are lower in fermentable carbohydrates and have been texture modified to decrease fibre particle size such as smoothies and soups rather than salads, cooked veggies rather than raw, and nut butter rather than whole nuts which may be better tolerated for those who are prone to bloating from high fibre intake.

Fibre intake should be increased gradually by about 3-5 grams and staying at that level for several days before upping intake again to avoid discomfort. Also, be sure to increase your water intake as you add more fibre to your diet.

"Fiber and fluid should always be increased simultaneously," says Lauren Cornell, RDN. "Even if you have no intolerances to FODMAPs (most FODMAPs are a form of fiber), increasing your fiber intake without also increasing your fluid intake is bound to cause some gas or bloating."

If you continue to experience discomfort it might help to consult with a registered dietician who will work with you to identify your triggers and explore options to help with gas and bloating issues.

According to American federal guidelines individuals aged 2+ should be eating a variety of healthy food choices, and balancing calories ingested with physical activity. These guidelines suggest foods including fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, unsalted nuts and seeds, lean meats, poultry, seafood, beans and peas, soy products and eggs.
