Geneticists Attempt To Help Chemotherapy Patients Could End Age-Related Hair Loss, Wrinkled Skin And Reduced Energy – Forbes

A University of Alabama cancer geneticist is taking his anti-aging research to the next level to effectively end age-related hair loss, wrinkled skin and reduced energy. And he hopes to have products on the market in 5 years.

A new startup out of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Yuva Biosciences, is essentially the result of Keshav Singhs attempt to help chemotherapy patients re-grow the hair they lose as a result of the cancer treatment. But what he found could help everyone.

Cropped composite image of a woman when she was young and old

Yuvawhich means youth in Hindihopes to tap into the multi-billion-dollar hair loss prevention and anti-aging skincare market with cosmeceuticals, science-based cosmetics and pharmaceuticals based on its founders research into mitochondrial DNAthe tiny part of cells that produce 90 percent of the chemical energy they need to survive.

Singh said along with causing skin to age and hair to fall out, mitochondrial dysfunction can drive age-related diseases. A depletion of the DNA in mitochondria is also implicated in human mitochondrial diseases, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, age-associated neurological disorders and cancer.

Last year, Singh and his colleagues at UAB reversed wrinkles and restored hair growth in mice. The team triggered a gene mutation that caused mitochondrial dysfunction in mice, causing them to develop wrinkled skin and lose their hair. The UAB researchers discovered that turning off that mutation restored the mice to normal appearance making them indistinguishable from healthy mice of the same age. In effect, when the mitochondrial function was restored, the mice regained smooth skin and thick fur.

The mouse in the center photo shows aging-associated skin wrinkles and hair loss after two months of ... [+] mitochondrial DNA depletion. That same mouse, right, shows reversal of wrinkles and hair loss one month later, after mitochondrial DNA replication was resumed. The mouse on the left is a normal control, for comparison.

Singh along with Bhupendra Singh, Trenton R. Schoeb and Prachi Bajpai, UAB Department of Genetics; and Andrzej Slominski, UAB Department of Dermatology shared their results in apaperin July 2018, Reversing wrinkled skin and hair loss in mice by restoring mitochondrial function, in the journal Cell Death and Disease. The work was supported by U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants.

Now in addition to his duties as a senior scientist in the Cancer Cell Biology Program and director of the Cancer Genetics Program at the ONeal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB, Singh will serve as chief scientific advisor for Yuva Biosciences.

Keshav Singh, Ph.D., cancer geneticist and chief scientific advisor for Yuva Biosciences

The founding editor-in-chief of Elseviers Mitochondrion journal, Singh said scientists already knew that humans age as mitochondrial DNA content and mitochondrial function decline. He said the trick is to find a way to restore that content and function. And theyve already done that in mice. Now they want to transfer those studies and hopefully similar results to human trials.

Our plan is to look for two things, Singh said. We want to identify natural products which can enhance mitochondrial function. We have already identified at least one of these natural products that enhances mitochondrial function and also seems to prevent hair loss and wrinkles. Secondly, we want to re-purpose drugs that are already FDA-approved.

Singh said the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) already has a library of thousands of FDA-approved compoundsdrugs for everything from diabetes to Alzheimers disease. We want to test them to see which ones might enhance mitochondrial function and even enhance energy, he said, adding that researchers work last year at UAB allowed us to develop a system where we can use different compounds that could enhance mitochondrial function.

Singh said the first of Yuvas products will likely be a topical therapy to halt wrinkles and hair loss and perhaps restore damage already done.

Yuva Biosciences plans to prevent or undo many of the effects of aging, which is why we like to say our goal is to provide Youthfulness for LifeTM, Singh said. Currently, we are aiming to develop productsto help people look and feel younger. Ourlong-term plan is to increase health span by addressing diseases associated with aging.

With the help of Greg Schmergel, a Boston-based serial entrepreneur, who will serve as chairman of Yuva Biosciences, Singh will occupy lab space at Innovation Depot, Inc. The Depot is a 140,000-square-foot office, lab and co-working startup space for technology companies located near UAB in Birmingham, Alabama. Yuva plans to hire two additional employees early next year.

Schmergel brings more than 25 years of experience in launching multiple high-tech ventures and leading a Massachusetts-based nanotechnology company, Nantero Inc., where he is the co-founder and CEO. A former senior vice president of corporate strategy for About, Inc., Schmergel also serves on the Board of Trustees of Lahey Hospital & Medical Centera, a physician-led nonprofit teaching hospital of Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) based in Burlington, Massachusetts.

In a statement, Schmergel said Yuva is committed to building the company in Birmingham, where well have access to resources like the world-class researchers and facilities at UAB, the startup-focused amenities at Innovation Depot, and the rising regional entrepreneurial network.

Scientists Robert K. Naviaux, MD. Ph.D. and Matt R. Kaeberlein, Ph.D. will serve on the Yuva Biosciences Advisory Board. Kaeberlein specializes in aging and is past president of the American Aging Association, and professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Washington (UW), in Seattle. Naviaux specializes in mitochondrial and metabolic medicine and is a professor of Genetics at the University of California San Diego (UCSD).

Singh said there is no telling how far Yuva could go in aging research, though there is much testing yet to be done. We have discovered that mitochondria, which are the powerhouse of the cell, are the reversible regulator of wrinkles and hair loss, Singh said. The potential is huge as everyone develops wrinkles and most of us lose hair. So, any agent or drug which can slow down or reverse that will have a major impact.

Singh wouldnt speculate on whether manipulating mitochondrial DNA could cause all human organs and systems to regenerate and whether it would reverse aging in themfor example the human brain and any implications his research could have on dementia. And although little change was seen in other organs when the mutation was induced, he did hint that there is indeed great potential for further disease research.

Getting Fit Is Costing a Bit More in West Hollywood – WEHOville

The most expensive gym in West Hollywood? The answer to that question used to be Equinox, which charges an initiation fee of $200 to $300 and then $300 a month for membership. But then along came Dogpound, the celebrity fitness center that opened in May on Robertson Boulevard. No membership required there, but a 60-minute workout with a trainer costs $200, or a total of $2,280 if you go for 12 sessions in a month. Theres a decent chance youll see Justin Bieber pumping weights nearby.

And now theres Monarch Athletic Club, which is opening Dec. 12 at 8730 Sunset Blvd. The cost of a membership there ranges from $1,250 to $2,000 a month, with the basics including unlimited personal training, quarterly evaluations, nutritional advice, and access to the clubs amenities, including Monarchs social club. The pricier membership offers services such as metabolic panel testing, 30- to 60-minute sports massages, ongoing physical therapy sessions, IV therapy and injections, anti-aging treatments and a concierge doctor that can be booked same-day, for house, office, hotel, or work calls.

Monarch Athletic Club says on its website that to even call it a fitness brand is a gross understatement; instead, the club serves as a hub for personal growth and optimization.

Another attribute that Monarch calls out is the fact that it is Private & Exclusive. Monarch is only available to members and not to the general public. Like-minded members will be able to work towards their fitness and health goals without distraction.

Dr. Ryan Greene is the CEO of Monarch Athletic Club and serves as the principal medical advisor. He is an osteopathic physician specializing in human performance, sports medicine and nutrition as well as cosmetic dermatology.

11 Benefits of Jojoba Oil for Skin & Hair – How to Use Jojoba Oil – Prevention.com

Few beauty products are as straightforward as an oil: Slather a drop or two onto your problem areaswhether it be that dry patch on your skin or on the split ends of your hairand get back to your regularly scheduled programming. But choosing one out of the dozens of oils out there to add to your routine? Not so easy to figure out.

Theres coconut, rosehip, argan, and grapeseed oil, to name a handfulall of which contain unique properties that can benefit your skin and hair in impressive ways. But another oil that deserves a humble brag? Jojoba oil (and not just because its name is fun to say).

Heres why dermatologists believe this uber-versatile skincare oil deserves a spot in your medicine cabinet.

Jojoba oil is derived from the seeds of the jojoba shrub, a perennial native to the North American deserts. The oil accounts for 50% of the jojoba seed and is extracted by cold-pressing, a process that helps maintain the rich nutritional value of the oil.

Similar to other skincare oils, jojoba oil contains oodles of vitamins, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory properties, but what sets it apart from the others is that its technically not an oil, but a wax ester.

What does this mean for your skin? Jojoba oil has a similar molecular structure and composition to sebum, which the skin naturally produces for moisturization, says Zain Husain, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist practicing at the New Jersey Dermatology & Aesthetics Center.

Translation: When you slather it on your face, jojoba oil mimics the skins sebum and balances out your complexion, adding more sebum where its needed, and winding down production where its not. As for your hair? Sebum also naturally coats your strands, so applying jojoba where you need it the most can make your hair feel soft and even boost shine.

Its chemical composition also makes it one of the more stable oils around. While other oils tend to go rancid lightning-fast, jojoba oil typically has a much longer shelf life.

How to choose the best jojoba oil for your skin and hair

When shopping around for jojoba oil, make sure its 100% pureorganic, cold-pressed, unrefinedbecause processed oil that contains preservatives and other ingredients may irritate the skin and cause adverse side effects, such as eczema or allergic reactions.

Its also important to take a peek at the ingredients list to ensure that jojoba is listed as the main ingredient, as opposed to a supplemental product added in. Jojoba as the main ingredient means youre getting an adequate amount of the product so it can fulfill your desired skin and hair needs, says Dr. Husain.

Still not sure if the jojoba oil youve purchased is top-notch? Pure jojoba oil usually possesses a straw-like color that can range from yellow to gold, says Joel Schlessinger, M.D., Omaha-based board-certified dermatologist and RealSelf.com contributor. One of its best characteristics is its ability to absorb fast, so if a jojoba oil feels like its just sitting on top of the skin, its likely lower quality, he adds.

How to use jojoba oil for better skin

Jojoba oil is loaded with antioxidants, such as vitamins A and E, and omega-6 fatty acids, which are essential components of the skins barrier. It also acts as a humectant, meaning it works to retain moisture in the skin. This protective layer, combined with the anti-inflammatory effects of the vitamin E, gives skin the breather necessary to focus on the healing process.

This can be especially beneficial to those with eczema and psoriasis, says Dr. Husain. Applying a drop or two of jojoba oil to these trouble spots, once to twice daily, should help turn things around.

Similar to other oils, jojoba oil is great for soothing dry, irritated skin (or preventing it from cropping up in the first place). Its anti-inflammatory benefits help calm the complexion, while providing the hydration it needs to restore itself, says Dr. Schlessinger. And because its a humectant, it forms a protective seal over the skin to prevent future moisture loss.

Use a few drops of jojoba oil straight-up after cleansing, or mix it into your go-to moisturizer to amp up its effectiveness and super-hydrate your skin.

Jojoba oils chemical composition allows it to mimic the skins sebum, therefore it balances out the skin by not overproducing oil in areas of the skin where its not needed, says Michele Green, M.D., a New York City-based board-certified dermatologist and RealSelf.com contributor. It also contains antimicrobial properties that can ward off certain types of bacteria, making it an excellent choice for acne-prone skin.

You can either swipe a few drops over your face with a cotton roundafter cleansing and toner, but before any heavier creams and lotionsor use it as a carrier oil for other acne-fighters, such as tea tree oil.

Jojoba oil is naturally rich in vitamin E, a potent antioxidant that helps the skin defend itself against free radicals that can cause premature aging and skin damage, says Dr. Schlessinger. Its also rich in amino acids, which are the building blocks of collagen. The result? A reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and improvements in skin texture, tone, and elasticity.

To score these anti-aging perks, you can apply a few drops of jojoba oil to freshly cleansed skin, or you can use it to boost the efficacy of your go-to anti-aging products.

Its super-lightweight, making it the perfect carrier oil for treatment products and actives which are otherwise unable to penetrate the deep layers of the skin, says Dr. Green.

There are several essential oils, such as tea tree and peppermint, which are known to help lessen the severity of a cold sore, even help ward one off, says Debra Jaliman, M.D., New York City-based board-certified dermatologist and author of Skin Rules. But these oils need to be diluted by a carrier oil so they dont irritate the skin, and thats where jojoba oil comes in.

Jojoba oil happens to contain docosanol (the active ingredient in OTC cold sore creams), which does its thing by inhibiting the virus from getting to healthy skin cellsand may be the one-two punch needed to show your cold sore whos boss. Simply dab the diluted tea tree (or peppermint) oil onto your cold sore with a clean cotton swab, and mosey on with your day.

Jojoba oil makes for a great makeup remover, as its lightweight and non-greasy, says Dr. Green. Plus, it gets all of your makeup off without tugging at the skin.

Massage a few drops onto your face, and let it sit for about a minute. Wet a soft washcloth with warm water and gently wipe your makeup off, leaving your eye makeup until last so the oil has more time to do its thing. Lightly pat your skin dry, then continue on with your skincare routine.

How to use jojoba oil for better hair

Remember, jojoba oil molecules are similar to sebum, which naturally coats your hair with oil. Applying it to your scalp and hair can hydrate individual hair strands and help lock in moisture, leaving your hair feeling soft and healthy, says Dr. Husain. And because its super-lightweight, people with thin or fine hair can use it to hydrate their strands sans the heaviness of regular conditioners.

You can add a few drops of jojoba oil to your go-to conditioner, apply the oil directly to strands post-shampoo and pre-stylingand if your hairs Sahara-dry, you can also slather it on for a few hours (or overnight) for a deep-conditioning effect.

Jojoba oil naturally contains palmitic acid and stearic acid, both of which are known for conditioning and protecting the hair, says Dr. Green. When massaged onto the scalp, the added hydration can help prevent dandruff or an itchy scalpand because jojoba oil is skilled at balancing out the skin, ongoing use may also keep those pesky flakes from returning.

Depending on the severity of your dandruff, you could use jojoba oil as a pre-treatment before shampooing (say, letting it sit for 20 minutes before rinsing), or as a leave-in scalp conditioner post-shampoo, suggests Dr. Green.

The fatty acids in jojoba oil not only condition the hair, but protect it from styling tool-induced heat damage, says Dr. Jaliman. And remember those potent antioxidants? They defend your hair against free radicals the same way they do your skin. For those with color-treated hair, adding jojoba oil to your repertoire can help extend the length of your color too, says Dr. Jaliman. To score these protective benefits, run a drop of two of jojoba oil through your hair before and after styling.

The vitamins and minerals found in jojoba oil (vitamins B and C, zinc, copper) provide nourishment to the hair and help keep it thick and growing. The zinc thats found in jojoba oil, for example, is vital for the tissue in the hair to grow, says Dr. Husain. It helps the follicles grow and maintains the functionality of the surrounding oil glands.

Its also excellent for strengthening the hair, he adds, and advises that anyone suffering from hair loss apply a few drops to their scalp as a regular leave-in treatment. This will help moisturize the follicles to prevent dryness, which can lead to hair falling out, says Dr. Husain.

Copper deficiency can lead to loss of pigment and premature gray hair, and copper itself is currently being studied as a potential topical anti-aging compound. Because jojoba oil contains copper, along with protective antioxidants like vitamins C and E, applying it could help slow down this process and restore some of the lost copper, says Dr. Husain.

Until the jurys back on how effective jojoba oil is in this department, give it as much time to (potentially) combat grays as possible by using it as a leave-in conditioner. Massage a few drops onto your scalp and hair, after showering and before stylingthen cross your fingers.

Fruits of youth: Consider this your guide to an anti-aging diet – Salamanca Press

There are several well-known factors that contribute to aging: smoking, stress, sun exposure and genetics, among them. But what you may not realize is what you put on your plate can also cause you to look beyond your year.

Everything that goes into your mouth affects your aging cycle, says Tina Martini, chef and author of "Delicious Medicine: The Healing Power of Food." Among the offenders are alcohol, refined sugar, and over-processed and fried foods.

When you eat fresh foods, as close to nature as you can get, you can slow down the effects of damage to your cells, thus slowing the aging process, she says.

Fried Foods

One of the main damaging factors is acrylamide, an organic compound that is produced during the frying process of some starchy foods. This has led the American Cancer Society to recommend limiting French fries, potato chips, foods made from grains breakfast cereals, cookies, toast because they tend to have higher levels of this chemical.

Acrylamide can affect the skin in the same way that sun damage does, says Martini.

Reduce your exposure by soaking raw potato slices in water for 15 to 30 minutes and draining before frying or roasting. Also, when cooking, choose boiling or steaming to stop acrylamide from forming.

Refined Sugar

Sugar is the main source of energy for our bodies, but it can also contribute to a process called glycation. The excess sugar molecules attach to proteins, creating "advanced glycation end products" or AGEs, which are linked to the loss of collagen. Losing collagen can lead to wrinkles and creepy skin.

Remove processed sugary foods from your diet and eat fresh vegetables and fruits, says Lorraine Kearney, BASc, NDTR, an adjunct lecturer at the City University of New York. To get the maximum nutrients from fruits enjoy them whole instead of dried, blended or pureed.

Snack on organic peaches, cherries, apples and strawberries as they can help to fight the signs of aging.

Enriched and Fortified Foods

You will often find the words enriched and fortified on labels of prepackaged foods. Those words generally mean that all the nutrients were removed during processing, and the manufacturer put back what they deemed important. A diet high in processed foods can lead to oxidative stress, which occurs due to an imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants in your body and may lead to cell damage.

Eating a diet rich in colorful foods increases the amount of nutrients the body needs to heal on the cellular level, Kearney says.

Stock up on fresh and antioxidant-rich foods like blackberries, blueberries, beets, bell peppers and radishes as they mitigate the effects of oxidative stress.

Alcohol

While drinking some alcohols in moderation is known to have beneficial health effects, overuse can cause wrinkles, puffiness, inflammation and dehydration.

While you should always remain hydrated, be extra mindful when consuming spirits; and instead of having a full glass of wine, enjoy a spritzer made with seltzer. Staying hydrated not only keeps your skin supple but also flushes toxins from the body.

Skin care is very important in protecting our skin, but its really the moisture in our bodies that keeps us radiant, says Martini.

Doctor launches the first online clinic dedicated to using common drugs for a different purpose: to slow aging – CNBC

Dr. Zalzala hopes to serve the growing market of people interested in anti-aging treatments.

One of the many wild medical pursuits in Silicon Valley is the effort to slow down the aging process. Sajad Zalzala is trying to make it a reality.

Zalzala, a 38-year-old family medicine doctor based in the Detroit area, has just opened an online clinic called Qalytude, dedicated to anti-aging. As a physician licensed to practice in all 50 states, Zalzala can treat patients anywhere in the country by phone or online, in addition to those who visit his physical clinic.

Initially, Zalzala will be targeting the small but growing segment of Americans who take medicines like Metformin, a type 2 diabetes drug, but for the unintended purpose of staving off aging. Researchers are now finding evidence of reduced cancer risk in the drug, and studies in mice have shown potential for an improved life span, but scientists warn that it might not produce the same result in humans.

"There's this movement around Metformin that I could see having a snowball effect," Zalzala told CNBC.

He's jumping into a market for anti-aging services, products and technologies that's expected to reach $271 billion by 2024, according to Market Research Engine. Venture capital funds are dabbling in the space as are billionaires like Jeff Bezos and biohackers, who experiment with drugs and supplements for health and longevity purposes.

Zalzala said that only a few clinicians are trained in this field, and they're highly costly to see and often backed up with patients. Many primary care physicians won't prescribe Metformin to people who don't have diabetes until they better understand whether it's safe.

Zalzala's goal is to make it easier for people interested in drugs like Metformin to talk to a physician. He plans to hire a team of doctors to conduct research into Metformin and other drugs both their safety and efficacy and prescribe them virtually to patients while monitoring them for side effects.

Having previously worked for a handful of virtual medical companies, including Hims and Pill Club, Zalzala is familiar with the model. Hims and Roman are among companies that have sprung up in recent years to help people get medications for erectile dysfunction and hair loss, the types of things that patients are often embarrassed to discuss with a family doctor. Other companies are prescribing medication virtually for birth control, sexual health and prevention, anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Some of these companies require that patients talk to their doctor via video, while others request only that the user fill out a survey. The laws that govern how engaged a physician must be in the process vary by state.

For an area like anti-aging, a medical expert needs to be highly involved in the process.

These drugs "always must be prescribed by a doctor," said Lisa Suennen, managing director of digital and technology at the law firm Manatt, Phelps and Phillips. "Any drug can be dangerous if it is mixed with something contraindicated," and it's especially important to be cautious when they're being used "for claims that aren't fully vetted."

The side effects for Metformin include diarrhea, low blood sugar and abdominal pain, as well as a condition called lactic acidosis that involves excessive acid building up in the body. It also still isn't well understood whether the drug will provide benefits to healthy people, particularly those who exercise regularly.

Another medicine Zalzala is exploring is rapamycin, which has an immunosuppressant function and is useful in helping patients avoid rejected transplanted kidneys. He's also looking into so-called NAD booster patches. Both interventions are starting to get tested in the Silicon Valley tech community for their anti-aging effects, even though there are health risks.

Zalzala said he intends to be especially conservative with these untested therapies, but he didn't rule out the possibility of prescribing them. He said that he will recommend lifestyle and dietary changes and not just pills.

"Most of us don't have the perfect lifestyle," he said. "So I'm hoping to add an extra layer of protection."

WATCH: Tech, health care will continue to lead the market

Fruits of youth: Consider this your guide to an anti-aging diet – Today’s News-Herald

OCEANSIDE, California, Nov. 11, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Therapeutics Solutions International, Inc., (OTC Markets: TSOI) announced today the signing of a Letter of Intent with Beijing Regenesis Biotechnology Co. Ltd., of Beijing China to develop and commercialize the anti-aging properties of cord blood plasma combined with NanoStilbene.

"Our Company is the leading entity in implementation of anti-aging regenerative medicine in China. We have previously commercialized novel technologies for rejuvenation of testicular and ovarian function," said Dr. Fei Li, Chief Executive Officer of Beijing Regenesis. "Cord blood components have been used for more than a Century in medicine with an excellent safety profile. We are excited to utilize the new technology developed by TSOI in order to reduce and potentially even reverse the biological aspects of aging."

"Having previously collaborated with Beijing Regenesis, I am excited to expand our work in the area of anti-aging medicine. There are publications from Stanford University[1] andHarvard University[2] that have shown that if the circulation of an aged mouse is connected to the circulation of a young mouse, various factors secreted by young mice induce an anti-aging/rejuvenating effect on organs/tissues of aged mice. Following this logic, other studies have demonstrated that human cord blood plasma, when administered to aged mice results in restoration of brain function and improved cellular function in the hippocampus[3]," said Dr. Feng Lin, Chief Scientific Officer of TSOI. "We are very excited to commercialize the use of cord blood plasma with NanoStilbene as a means of translating the animal parabiosis experiments into humans."

"Our Company is about fast forwarding the development of novel medical technologies. CBD Oil and How It Became One of The Fastest Growing Industries Today – FX Empire

FX Empires Thomas Hughes sat down for an exclusive interview with Leafreports DR. Zora DeGrandpre, a certified physician in anti-aging medicine and CME Medical marijuanato discuss the latest developments in the world of CBD and her outlook on the industry.

CBD is a high-growth niche market with a potentially very-lucrative future for investors. Because the buzz around CBD andPublicly traded CBD Companies is heating up, we wanted to cut through the hype to find out what our readers need to know.

What other growth opportunities exist in hemp aside from the CBD market?

CBG is an up-and-coming cannabinoidit may have broader actions than CBD in some respectsit may have more effects on inflammation and appears to be a more potent anti-tumor agent.

There are well over 100 cannabinoids any single one of them could potentially be a growth opportunity.

Theres also the hemp-fiber aspectthat is likely to be huge as a way to replace plastics and to impact climate change. The hemp plant is also pretty nutritious and resistant to climate changeand there are many areas/growth zones where hemp can be successfully grown.

I just learned that my valley in central Washington was a major hemp-growing area during WW2. I am hearing more and more farmers discussing the viability of growing commercial hemp.

Most of the growth opportunities depend on legislative intelligencenot as big a worry in Washington state, but a big concern across certain parts of the US. Even here in Washington state, until CBD helped reduce his sons pain, one legislator was vehemently opposed to hempproving that logic, science and rational thinking does not move people, but personal experience may.

Legislation has to move with the scienceI have little belief in legislators understanding of science, but more belief in their willingness to dip into the lobbying purse and suddenly become believers.

Cannabis has to be taken off Schedule Ithere is no scientific rationale for its placement there, but I doubt whether that is convincing enoughbut until it is taken off Schedule I, the science will be lagging and if the science lags, the potential growth opportunities will lag as well. Alsowe dont know where the FDA will come down on OTC CBD productsthat can make or break the industry.

How does the future legalization of recreational cannabis fit into your future plans?

I dont deal much with recreational cannabis, just the medical actions of CBD/THC. I do think that the psychological addictions of recreational cannabis are not well understood but that it is likely to be similar to alcohol addictionan under-reported and misunderstood risk for those with addictive tendencies.

There is insufficient research in the pre-psychotic effects of cannabis. People tend to think Its natural, it feels good, so it couldnt possibly harm me and that is out-and-out wrongcyanide is a natural substance too. Digitalis is medically useful within a very narrow therapeutic windowoutside that window, its a cardiac toxin.

What risks do you see for the hemp/CBD market in the near term? In the long-term?

CBD is being overblown as a miracle cure for everything from ingrown toenails to cancer. That will collapse at some point. It works for certain conditions but will likely be a major disappointment for many others.

There is no wonder drug-human physiological networks are complicated way beyond what we currently understand, and it is unlikely that any single substance will be any magic bullet. People want this but it is not likely.

The science has not yet caught up with the anecdotal evidencewhen it does, the hype will calm down somewhat.

The story of vaping should be taken seriouslytoo many amateurs with no integrity got into the marketwhatever substance(s) is/are adulterating the vape oils and causing respiratory illnesses will likely be identified and legislators will likely swing the regulatory pendulum way offand the hemp industry will likely be pulled into a legislative episode of Reefer Madness.

What new verticals within the CBD industry do you see opening up in the future?

Depends on the research findingsthe apoptotic and anti-inflammatory properties are among the most potentially useful ones.

4 Skincare Ingredients A Top Derm Wants You To Use Daily – Women’s Health

Most people would agree that beautiful, healthy skin is #goals. But youd be hard-pressed to find two people who agree on the best way to achieve it. And that kinda makes sense: There are countless skincare products on the market, and it's tricky to know which actually live up to their claims.

So how can you cut through the clutter and find the products that will actually give you the complexion you want? According to Lily Talakoub, M.D. of McLean Dermatology, the key is to look for formulas that contain proven ingredients, like the four superstars below. According to Dr. Talakoub, theyre all worth adding into your daily routine.

What it is: Glycolic acid, which is derived from sugar cane, is the alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) with the smallest molecules. Like all AHAs, its a chemical (rather than a physical) exfoliant. Where physical exfoliants remove the build-up of dead skin through scrubbing, chemical exfoliants like AHAs do so by dissolving, making them gentler on the skin. And since glycolic acid is the tiniest AHA, it's able to penetrate the skin to deliver the best possible results.

Revitalift Derm Intensives 10% Pure Glycolic Acid Serum

$23.99

The benefits: Using glycolic acid will leave your skin feeling soft and looking radiant and more youthful, says Dr. Talakoub. Plus, it loosens clogged pores, so it helps with any blackheads and deeper cystic acne. It can also diminish the appearance of acne scars and reduce hyperpigmentation and photo-aging, according to a Clinical, Cosmetic, and Investigational Dermatology study.

When and how to use it: While most in-office peels contain a 20 to 70 percent concentration of glycolic acid, you can add glycolic acid into your daily routine with low-dose products like LOral Paris Revitalift Derm Intensives 10% Pure Glycolic Acid Serum.

I use glycolic acid every single day, Dr. Talakoub says. You can apply it any time of day, following your cleansing routine and before applying a moisturizer. If you use it in the morning, follow up with SPF since glycolic acid can make skin more sensitive to the sun.

What it is: Vitamin C isn't just found in your morning glass of OJ. This free radical-neutralizing pro is one of the most effective topical antioxidant out there, according to Dr. Talakoub.

The benefits: Not only can it treat and prevent hyperpigmentation, photo-aging, and inflammation, according to UK researchers, applying it daily can also boost collagen production. Another perk: If you live in a metropolitan area where pollution wreaks havoc on your complexion, Vitamin C can help stave off damage, keeping your skin looking radiant.

When and how to use it: Apply it in the morning post-cleansing and follow up with SPF. Slathering on an antioxidant can make your skin slightly more sensitive to UV rays, so protecting yourself is a must!

What it is: Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A thats known for its anti-aging benefits.

The benefits: Unlike other anti-aging ingredients that may only target the top-most layer of skin, topical retinol improves the elasticity of the top, middle, and deepest layers of skin by stimulating collagen and elastin formation. Simply put: It will give you amazing results.

Retinol is the best anti-aging medicine because it speeds up the desquamationread: dead-cell-sheddingprocess and helps skin cells turn over faster, which regenerates the skin for a fresher complexion with less dullness and fine lines," Dr. Talakoub says.

When and how to use it: Retinol can be bought over the counter or with a prescription, however, prescription formulas work best, Dr. Talakoub says. There are many different retinol percentages on the market depending on your specific complexion goals. As a rule of thumb, cosmetic scientists recommend 0.4% concentrations for basic anti-aging benefits.

Once you find your ideal formula (either from your derm or OTC), add it into your nighttime routine. If its a serum, apply it after cleansing and before moisturizing; if its a moisturizer, use it as the last step of your evening regimen.

What it is: Ceramides are naturally occurring lipids in the skin that help form the skins moisture barrier. When you layer on synthetic ceramides (which are designed to mimic those natural ones) in the form of moisturizers and creams, you help strengthen and support your moisture barrier.

The benefits: While people with clear, healthy skin have over 340 ceramide species within their moisture barrier, those living with skin conditions like psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, acne, and dandruff have lower ceramide levels, which impact how well they can retain moisture, Dr. Talakoub explains. Applying a ceramide-rich skincare product can help combat that.

Other people can benefit from using the ingredient on the daily, too. Ceramides hold water in the skin, which leads to a more hydrated complexion, Dr. Talakoub says.

When and how to use it: Ceramides are almost always in moisturizers, as opposed to cleansers or toners, Dr. Talakoub says. So adding the superstar ingredient into your routine is as simple as finding a ceramide-rich moisturizer (like this one) and using it morning and night after cleansing and applying any essences, serums, or toners.

When adding these dermatologist-recommended ingredients into your routine, remember to take it slow. While they can absolutely be used daily, Dr. Talakoub points out that since glycolic acid and retinol increase the sloughing of the skin, theres a chance that they could lead to sensitivity. Ease them into your new routine, applying the ingredients every other day for the first three weeks, before upgrading to daily use.
