Greys Anatomy season 19 cast: Whos in the season 19 main cast? – Netflix Life

This fall, Greys Anatomy season 19 extends the ABC series as televisions longest-running American medical drama. After 400 episodes, the series remains a top draw and a hit among fans who have been there since the beginning or jumped in via a Netflix binge-watch.

Throughout the shows nearly two-decade run, the cast has changed quite a bit. Stars like Patrick Dempsey, Katherine Heigl, and Sandra Oh launched the series along with Ellen Pompeo, who has remained the leading star of the show since the first episode.

Along with Pompeo, Greys Anatomy season 19 will feature two additional cast members who have been with the show since season 1: Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. Many of the cast members have been with the series for multiple seasons.

However, ahead of the season 19 premiere this fall, ABC has announced a handful of fresh faces that fans will be seeing around Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital. Find out whos in the main cast, whos recurring, and whos new, with updates leading up to the premiere!

In another history-making season, theGreys Anatomyseason 19 cast once again brings back a fair amount of its familiar faces. ABC has solidified whos in and whos out, and the only season 18 cast member confirmed to not be returning is Richard Flood as Dr. Cormac Hayes.

Heres the Greys Anatomy season 19 cast:

While those are the cast members in the main cast, season 19 will also feature plenty of usual suspects in recurring roles, including but not limited to:

In season 18, Kate Walsh reprised her role as Dr. Addison Montgomery, who appeared in the early days of Greys and six seasons of the spin-off Private Practice. On Sept. 7, Variety reported that Walsh would recur in season 19, beginning in the third episode of the season.

Walsh makes her season 19 debut in the third episode of the season, airing Thursday, Oct. 20 and titled Lets Talk About Sex. As of this writing, its unclear how many season 19 episodes Walsh will be featured in, but with a recurring role, we could see her for a good handful.

On Aug. 3, Deadline reported that Ellen Pompeos role as Meredith Grey would be reduced in Greys Anatomy season 19. Pompeo will only appear in eight episodes of the upcoming season, which is expected to have 22 episodes. The star will still narrate each episode and act as an executive producer.

The huge change in Ellen Pompeos on-screen role is a first for the series. While shes not leaving Greys, her reduced role comes on the heels of Pompeo taking on her first non-Greys Anatomy role in over a decade. She will lead Hulus Orphan-themed limited seriesand juggle both series. Its currently unknown whether season 19 will be the last of the series or the last for Pompeo.

On Oct. 17, Greys Anatomy fans received some amazing news! A former favorite character and cast member will be making a long-awaited return trip to Grey Sloan Memorial. On Oct. 17, Deadline reported that Jesse Williams will guest star in season 19.

Williams will reprise his role as Dr. Jackson Avery in the fifth episode of season 19, which is set to air on Thursday, Nov. 3. The episode titled When I Go to the Border will also be directed by Williams. Perhaps Greys fans can potentially look forward to Williams directing more episodes.

Since his departure in the season 17 finale, Jesse Williams has appeared in the Broadway play Take Me Out, the Paramount+ movie Secret Headquarters, and the upcoming Netflix romantic comedy Your Place or Mine. His Greys return will be the fourth episode of the series hes directed.

In the lead up to the season 19 premiere this fall, ABC has announced a handful of new series regulars joining the iconic series as brand new characters. They might be new to Greys Anatomy, but you have definitely seen their faces before:

Alexis Floyd had a recurring role in Freeforms The Bold Type and had a breakthrough role in Netflixs limited series Inventing Anna. Niko Terho starred with fellow Greys cast member Jake Borelli in Freeforms romantic comedy The Thing About Harry. Midori Francis has appeared in titles such as Dash & Lily, The Sex Lives of College Girls, and Afterlife of the Party. Adelaide Kane was the lead in The CWs historical drama Reign and appeared in the shows Teen Wolf, Once Upon a Time, Into the Dark, and This Is Us. Harry Shum Jr. is known for his roles in Glee and Shadowhunters.

Greys Anatomy season 19 premieres Thursday, Oct. 6 at 9/8c on ABC. Watch season 1-18 now on Netflix.

Blue Jackets Sunday Gathering: Anatomy of an awful start, jamming with Caamp – The Athletic

COLUMBUS, Ohio A collection of notes, insights, ruminations, and did-you-knows gathered throughout the week that was for the Blue Jackets:

Item No. 1: Inside an awful start

Remarkable, isnt it, how the optimism and excitement for a season can deflate quicker than a popped balloon?

The Blue Jackets have opened the season with three regulation losses for only the third time in franchise history. In 2015-16, they were 0-8 a modern record for futility at the start of a season before getting a win. In 2011-12, they went 0-3 before tasting victory.

The internal focus all summer and the point driven home throughout training camp was that the Blue Jackets needed to be a stiffer club defensively after allowing nearly 300 goals last season. But despite that effort and oxygen, the Jackets look even more feeble without the puck.

No cohesion. No snarl. No confidence.

The Blue Jackets have been outscored 6-0 and outshot 40-21 in the third period so far this season. They arent just losing, they are fading into the sunset each night, which is never a good look, especially when you get housed in the home opener.

But things are never as bad as they seem. There are multiple reasons (excuses?) you can point to that help explain why this season has gone off the rails before it even left the station.

Heres a list of those maladies, along with a prediction of whether or not it can get better:

1. Intense fragility

Weve seen this before in recent seasons in Columbus, even though many of the names on the roster have changed. When the going gets rough, or the play gets amplified, the Blue Jackets have spans in the season where they just come unglued under the pressure.

I Have A Good Guess Why Kate Walsh May Be Coming Back To Grey’s Anatomy Now – CinemaBlend

Greys Anatomy fans were excited when Kate Walsh reprised her role as Addison Montgomery on the medical drama in Season 18 after more than a decade. McDreamys ex-wife made a few appearances including an all-time great elevator scene as the renowned OB/GYN who was attempting a groundbreaking uterine transplant. Ahead of the current season, it was announced Addison would be back in Seattle again, as Walsh signed on for a recurring role, and after showrunner Krista Vernoff revealed an upcoming storyline for Season 19, I think I might know what Addison is about to face.

In speaking with Deadline about whats ahead for Greys Anatomy, Krista Vernoff revealed that they are going to tackle another big issue this season, similar to their COVID arc in Season 17 that saw another Meredith near-death experience when she caught the virus. When asked if the medical drama was going to address the controversial Roe v. Wade reversal, Vernoff responded:

Absolutely. The impact of that Supreme Court decision has been massive. And, just like there was no way to do a medical show without looking at the impact of Covid, theres no way to do a medical show without looking at the impact of that decision.

With the showrunner confirming that Roe v. Wade and its massive impact on our country will play a part in Season 19, I think its a good bet that fetal surgeon and neonatal goddess Addison Montgomery would play a big part in the story. I also wouldnt be surprised to see fellow OB/GYN Carina DeLuca (Stefania Spampinato) cross over from Station 19, where she and her wife Maya Bishop (Danielle Savre) have been struggling to conceive a baby.

Krista Vernoff also implied that the Roe v. Wade plotline would be overarching, rather than a one-off episode, which might speak to star and executive producer Ellen Pompeos hopes that Greys Anatomy would become less preachy with its social issues. On her podcast Tell Me this summer, Pompeo said:

I think Id like to see things happen a little more subtly and over time. You know, consistently and less hit you over the head with it for just one hour and then we never talk about it again. I wish we could sort of touch on these social issues that are important and relevant and sort of have them be threads throughout.

Kate Walsh returning in a recurring role seems like the perfect opportunity to give this important issue some room to breathe over multiple episodes, especially after Addisons uterine transplant didnt achieve the desired results last season.

With the character returning in the October 20 episode, Lets Talk About Sex, Im also excited to see the dynamic between her and Lucas Adams (Niko Terho), who was revealed to be McDreamys nephew in the season premiere. Will Addison be involved in the awkward confrontation that awaits Lucas, after he chose to let his fellow interns believe he was sleeping with Amelia (Caterina Scorsone), rather than reveal their family ties? I NEED Addison's take on that bonehead decision.

Whatever is in store for Addison Montgomery, I will be here for it, so join me in tuning into Greys Anatomy at 9 p.m. ET Thursday, October 20, on ABC. Also be sure to check out our 2022 TV Schedule to see what new and returning shows are premiering soon.

Where You’ve Seen The New Interns On Grey’s Anatomy Before – Looper

Despite getting its start in 2005 which happens to be the same year "Criminal Minds," "Supernatural," and the revival of "Doctor Who" all made their television premieres "Grey's" is still introducing us to new crops of resident interns all the way in 2022. This time, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) is the chief of surgery, far removed from her days as an intern under Doctor Bailey's (Chandra Wilson) instruction. And while the show is in an entirely different place than it is in Season 1, some things remain the same.

Upon the new resident interns' introduction, audiences are able to make a few happy connections between these interns and the original ones that started the series. Our original crop of interns was Meredith Grey, Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl), Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), and George O'Malley (T.R. Knight). Our new interns are Benson "Blue" Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.), Simone Griffin (Alexis Floyd), Jules Millin (Adelaide Kane), Mika Yasuda (Midori Francis), and Lucas Adams (Niko Terho).

Now, here's where the nostalgia kicks in.Meredith gives the new resident interns the same speech she and her fellow interns heard on the first episode. Jules discovers that she and her attending Linc (Chris Carmack) have already slept together a moment that's immediately reminiscent of Meredith and Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). Simone arrives late on her first day just as Meredith did, and later reveals that she was born at this very hospital. The resident interns all spend their time relaxing in the same hallway hospital beds that our original group used to hang out in, which just brings out all the feels. But the biggest moment is the fact that Lucas is Derek's nephew, and he repeats the once iconic phrase, "It's a beautiful day to save lives."

Grey’s Anatomy season 19 predictions: our 5 biggest theories | What to Watch – What To Watch

As Grey's Anatomy season 19 prepares to launch, fans are formulating several theories about what may happen in the coming episodes, especially in light of the news that Ellen Pompeo will have a reduced role in the show. The Greys audience isnt sure whether they should be preparing to say goodbye to Meredith Grey or simply see you later.

Well, after hearing the online chatter, doing some research and using our own knowledge of the series, weve developed our own thoughts about what we imagine will happen in Greys Anatomy season 19. If you had a chance to read our season 18 finale predictions, youll know that were pretty good at reading producers.

Here are our predictions.

Despite Ellen Pompeo only signing up for eight episodes this season due to her commitment to film an upcoming Hulu series, we dont believe season 19 is not going to be Merediths farewell. For starters, Deadline (opens in new tab) recently reported that Pompeo confirmed that viewers will still feel her presence throughout the season as shell continue doing the voiceovers in the episodes.

Furthermore, Pompeo mentioned that shell be back to star in the season 19 finale, and stated "well see if we can keep it going" when speaking about her future on the show. Hear for yourself.

With all of that said, were making the bold prediction that to address Pompeos temporary absence on Greys that Meredith is going to leave to do some soul searching. In the season 18 finale, Richard (James Pickens Jr.) negatively compared Meredith to her mother and accused her of wanting to tear down the hospital after she unnecessarily took a risk that killed a patient.

Although shes been appointed interim chief of surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial, we think Richards words will weigh heavy on her, and with one bad surgery and a fatal outcome, everyones favorite doctor will go out in search of a new perspective in life. (Meredith taking a leave of absence wouldnt be new in the Greys world, as viewers should recall when Derek quit the hospital in season 5)

By the end of season 18, Grey Sloan was a bit short-staffed. With Teddy (Kim Raver) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) on the run from the authorities, Miranda (Chandra Wilson) quitting and Richard taking a leave of absence, the hospital could use a few attendings.

Enter Addison Montgomery. It was announced this summer (opens in new tab)that portrayer Kate Walsh will be back in season 19 on a recurring status.

Since leaving Greys Anatomy as a series regular, Addison has popped up several times whenever Grey Sloan has needed help. While she usually comes to the aid of the hospital at the request of Richard, it was clear last season that she and Meredith are not at odds despite being in that sordid love triangle with Derek (Patrick Dempsey) years ago. We foresee Addison returning to help her former foe in her time of crisis, just until the hospital reestablishes a solid foundation.

Having taken some time away from Grey Sloan, we think Miranda is ready to resume her duties as chief of surgery, and on her terms. Hospital personnel should beware. Gone are the days when attendings illegally medicated people off the books, when interns made knee-jerk decisions when treating patients and residents walked around the halls of the hospital as if they knew best. The new and improved Miranda will run a tighter ship with the mindset that her family is her family, and her employees are her employees.

During her former tenure, the line between family and coworkers often blurred and that wound up not serving Miranda well in the long run. We think with a new mindset, shell continue to help the program rank back among one of the best in the country. What we cant predict here is if her new approach will have some bad consequences for her relationship with her mentor Richard going forward.

Given Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver are returning to Greys for season 19, the question that immediately comes to mind is how? How will writers address the fact that Owen and Teddy are on the run for the crimes he committed last season?

Since were guessing, wed venture to say that viewers will see a few episodes in which the couple is in a hiding out in a home compliments of one of their old military buddies. Eventually though, theyll realize that life on the run is not good for their kids, and Owen will agree to turn himself into the police.

Next, we believe Owen will find himself in the midst of a criminal court case as he attempts to clear his name. Longtime fans will remember that when Meredith was on trial for insurance fraud, she managed to beat the charges against her and return to medicine. We dont think Owen will meet the same fate.

While we dont think hell be serving a long stint in prison, we do imagine his medical license will be temporarily suspended.

Given the number of new hires to the Greys Anatomy cast (Alexis Floyd, Niko Terho, Midori Francis, Adelaide Kane and Harry Shum Jr.) and the fact they were all hired as interns, its clear show execs are trying to recapture some of that season 1 magic when those in the light blue scrubs were at the forefront. Although producers obviously know viewers tune into the drama to catch up with the series vets, WTW believes theyll hope to pull some of the audiences attention to the new crop of would-be surgeons.

The new season of Greys Anatomy airs on Thursday, October 6, at 9 pm ET/PT on ABC. The episode becomes available to stream the next day over on Hulu.

Vacheron Constantin presents The Anatomy of Beauty exhibition at the ArtScience Museum from now until Nov 2 – Prestige Online Singapore

The showcase features three experience areas, as well as watches from the 19th century to today.

Vacheron Constantin commemorates the reopening of its Marina Bay Sands boutique by presenting The Anatomy ofBeauty at level 4 of the ArtScience Museum from now until Nov 2.

It is Vacheron Constantins expertise in the decorative arts and its horologicalknowledge that has placed it in a league of its own. Since its founding in 1755, the manufacture has distinguished itself with timepieces whose beauty is expressed through aesthetics that are matched by unparalleled technical arrangement. The exhibition retraces these two inseparable links that have consistently characterised Vacheron Constantins approach to watchmaking.

The alliance betweendecorative arts and watchmaking techniques is illustrated through an exclusive curation of timepieces from the 19th century to today. The creations are also a demonstration of Vacheron Constantins relentless quest for absoluteperfection in every detail.

The exhibitions Experience AreasThe Anatomy of Beauty offers three sections. Called Experience Areas, the first, Our Heritage: A Legacy as Precious as Time, takes visitors on a journey into the watchmaking universe, immersing them into the manufactures exceptional history.

Artistic crafts including guilloch, enamelling, miniature painting, gem-setting and more, as well as the mostaccomplished technical mastery in the field of mechanical watchmaking constitute the very essence of Vacheron Constantin. The second section, The Anatomy of Beauty, shows how attention to detail is second nature at Vacheron Constantin and features the traditional hand-crafts and decorative techniques employed by master craftsmen to achieve the meticulous finishing and details found on each watch.

Finally, Science and Complications is an immersive journey that highlights five of Vacheron Constantins most important horological complications: the tourbillon, split-seconds chronograph, retrograde, perpetual calendar and minute-repeater.

The maison has curated 24 timepieces from its archives that encompass over 200 years of creations and exceptional technical excellence. Here are a few of the stand-out pieces youll find at the Experience Areas:

Pocket watch in finely chased yellow gold with amethysts and guilloch gold dial (1822)An excellent illustration of the Rococo period, this shell style inspired both the Mannerist grottos of Tuscany in the16th century, as well as Vacheron Constantin artisans. To create thisrelief decoration on a solid gold case, the master engraver used the pounced ornament technique, which involves carvingout domes, beads and rosettes that are then smoothed down with a file. A subtle colour-gradient setting withamethysts adds depth to the sea urchin motifs.

Tour de llle (2005)To celebrate the manufactures 250th anniversary, Vacheron Constantin presented this watch with 16 complicationson a double-face display. Considered one of the worlds most complicated wristwatches, it was produced in a verysmall series of just seven pieces. Design-engineers and watchmakers took over 10,000 hoursof research and development to create this horological masterpiece.

Mtiers dArt Tribute to Great Civilisations (2022)The Persian Empire of Darius the Great; the Golden Age of Ancient Egypt; the Hellenistic period of Ancient Greece; andthe rise to power of Augustus, the first Roman emperor, are the historical anchor points of Vacheron Constantinsnew Metiers dArt watch series. Part of the partnership with the Louvre initiated in 2019, the maison launched a series of four timepieces based on themuseums ancient collections in Paris earlier this year.

Historiques 222 (2022)An icon of the 1970s, the Historiques 222 is a contemporary reissue of the historic model. With its monobloctonneau-shaped case topped with a grooved bezel, this timepiece with integrated strap retains its functional and sporty spirit with timeless elegance, thanks to the purity of its lines and finesse of its curvature. The case is decorated with a Maltese cross at 5 oclock and has an open caseback, allowing the calibre to be admired infull view with an oscillating weight specially redesigned for this model.

Patrimony Minute Repeater Ultra-thin (2013)Measuring a slim 8.1mm, this minute repeater watch in pink gold is the epitome of watchmaking elegance.Vacheron Constantin archived the unique, heavenly chimes of this timepiece, allowing the owner to recapture itsoriginal sound at any time. The manufactures technical excellence is also demonstrated by the silent ring mechanism, which ensures the gongschime at regular intervals.

Head-on | Kharge vs Tharoor: Anatomy of a farcical election for Congress president – Firstpost

On the face of it, an election for the next Congress president is a welcome departure from the way political party leaders are picked for the top spot.

Inner-party elections are opaque. The high command of a party has the last word. The BJP is no exception. All its past presidents were hand-picked by the BJP high command in concurrence with the top leaders of the RSS. Most recently these included Nitin Gadkari, Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah and JP Nadda.

Other parties dont even go through the pretence of sifting through candidates before choosing one, ostensibly on merit.

The top dynastic leadership of Tejashwi Yadavs RJD, Akhilesh Yadavs SP, Jaganmohan Reddys YSR Congress, Mamata Banerjees TMC, MK Stalins DMK, Naveen Patnaiks BJD, Sharad Pawars NCP and others would be bemused by the suggestion that anyone outside the family could head their party.

The BJP and the Left make an attempt to arrive at a party leader by consensus. But everyone knows that consensus means the word of the eminence grise.

For several years after Independence, the Congress, as the only major party, tried to set a good example. Jawaharlal Nehru was happy to let other leaders take the partys presidency while he headed the government as prime minister. The separation of power and duties often blurred in the Nehruvian Congress, but the intent was honourable.

During Nehrus 17 years as prime minister, several Congress leaders served as party president. To his credit, Nehru was party president for only three terms (from 1951-54) throughout his long prime ministership.

Even under the authoritarian Indira Gandhi, the Congress tradition of separating the post of party leader from prime minister continued. During her 16 years in power, she held the party presidency for only six years.

The comparison with the Sonia Gandhi years is instructive. She took over as party president in 1998. The Congress was out of power. When the Congress-led UPA took office in 2004, the separation of powers continued Dr Manmohan Singh as prime minister and Sonia Gandhi as party president.

But there was a reversal of tactics. While Nehru and Indira ran the government and allowed other Congress leaders to run the party, Sonia Gandhi kept an iron grip on the party for 21 consecutive years as president. Meanwhile, during UPA rule, she picked the malleable Manmohan Singh as prime minister.

How is the forthcoming contest for Congress president between Mallikarjun Kharge and Shashi Tharoor different? First, it is at best a farcical exercise. The electoral college of around 9,000 Congress pan-India leaders who will vote on 17 October are Gandhi loyalists. They will vote for Kharge, the official Congress candidate and the Gandhis choice. Virtually every Congress leader has backed Kharge. Even a dissident like Manish Tewari, with a reformist agenda akin to Tharoors, has put his weight behind Kharge.

***

Also Read

Its official: Mallikarjun Kharge vs Shashi Tharoor in Congress president race; Digvijaya drops out

***

So why is Tharoor contesting an election he is preordained to lose? There are several reasons. First, the Congress high command needed a credible non-official candidate to give the contest a patina of legitimacy. Tharoor fits the bill. He has a relatively independent mind. But his mind is not so independent that it will go against the wishes of the Gandhi high command.

Tharoor was careful to meet Sonia Gandhi before deciding to contest. Was he seeking her permission? Not exactly. It was just to make sure the Gandhis had no objection to him contesting. Of course, they didnt. He was the ideal strawman. Tharoor is fully aware of that but is willingly playing along in the wider interests of the party and his own political future. He will be adequately rewarded by the Gandhis for being a sporting loser.

In the 13 years Tharoor has been with the Congress, he has not once criticised even mildly any of the Gandhis. In an email exchange some years ago initiated by Tharoor I asked him whether he could ever get away criticising Sonia, Rahul or Priyanka Gandhi.

Since the email exchange was private, I will not disclose his reply.

Despite the farcical nature of the Congress presidential election, it has done some good. Both candidates, Kharge and Tharoor, will articulate their vision for the Congress ahead of a slew of Assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh later this year and key contests in Karnataka, Telangana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in 2023 before the Lok Sabha poll in 2024.

We will hear an old-school loyalist voice (Kharge) and a cosmopolitan loyalist voice (Tharoor) saying basically the same thing: secularism is good, majoritarianism is bad. Neither candidate will define secularism since its practice by Congress leaders is elastic. It varies between soft Hindutva (temple-hopping) and hard minority appeasement (hijabs).

Neither candidate will deal with the real issue: Why has the Congress disintegrated organisationally? A Rajasthan MLA rebellion of the kind witnessed last week would have been unthinkable a decade ago.

The answer lies in allowing the Congress to evolve from a family proprietorship into a modern political party. But that, as Tharoor knows, is a Utopian concept.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor

Tharoor is good at fighting battles he knows he has no realistic chance of winning. In 2006, he contested for the post of United Nations Secretary-General against Ban Ki-moon, South Koreas former foreign minister, knowing fully well that, despite Prime Minister Manmohan Singhs backing, the United States would veto his candidature. It did and Tharoor duly lost.

But even in defeat, Tharoor knows there are rich pickings. Within three years he joined the Congress, won the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat in 2009 and was appointed minister of state for external affairs in the UPA-I government.

The Gandhis are pleased that the first contest for Congress president in decades has acquired quasi-legitimacy by Tharoors presence.

But why rock the boat? The Kharges and Manmohan Singhs know their place in the party and act accordingly. Tharoor is cut from different cloth. His 29 years as a UN diplomat have taught him to say the right thing to the right people at the right time.

For the Gandhis that is not a firm guarantee of good behaviour in the future. In contrast, Kharge, at 80, is a safe pair of hands.

Anatomy: A Cadaveric Poem in-Training, the online peer-reviewed publication for medical students – Pager Publications, Inc.

Anatomy is more than flesh and bone and blood. Its more than the donor and the scalpel teaching the student.Anatomy shakes hands it tells and creates stories.Anatomy smiles it cries. It can do both at the same time.Anatomy carries the soul.It carries the spirit and the mind.Just as anatomy teaches in life,so too in death.Anatomy births life and returns to dust Complete.

Artists statement: This poem is simple and reaches into my heart with thought provoking images of those who donated their bodies before they passed. The beautiful souls who donated their bodies for our education should be treated with nothing but respect. At times, students forget that they are working with and cutting open a human being. Someone with jobs, stories, memories and countless other experiences. There were times when I felt disconnected from that fact, and I wrote this poem to assure that I would not forget how meaningful these peoples lives were and continue to be.

Biologist Shares Freakily Detailed Anatomical Illustrations of Pokmon – We Got This Covered

via The Pokemon Company

Do you ever wonder what a Pokmon would look like inside that cuddly exterior? No? Well, you can anyway after fan-made anatomically-accurate illustrations made their way online.

The images appeared on the Pokmon subreddit, where drawings of Cyndaquil, Octillery, Donphan, and Bellossom offered a detailed interpretation of the creatures anatomy. The drawings are very detailed, almost unsettlingly so, similar to what youd see in the doctors office. They even have names of the organs and details of bone structure for added accuracy.

Many commented underneath the thread on how horrifying (in a good way) these drawings are. Some also said that theyre now looking forward to their future nightmares.

Others, especially those either currently or aspiring to work in the field of biology, have praised the artist for the amount of detail these drawings have.

Fans showed excitement to see more, giving out requests for other Pokmon theyd like to see anatomically deconstructed. Some showed curiosity on how other Pokmon like ghost types or Cuebone would appear, considering that they have no bones usually, with the latter wearing skulls on their heads.

The original artist posted a link underneath the thread to their Poknatomy book, where they drew full-page anatomical illustrations of all the original 151 Pokmon. And while these drawings may look horrifying, you have to admit that the artist has placed a lot of effort to make them as detailed and convincing as possible.

Adverum Biotechnologies Presents Anatomical Improvements in Intraretinal and Subretinal Fluid After a Single IVT Injection of Ixo-vec (ADVM-022) in…

Adverum Biotechnologies, Inc.

- New data highlight that a single intravitreal injection of Ixo-vec can lead to stable and persistent aflibercept expression through three years resulting in fluid control supporting favorable vision outcomes, as well as decreasing treatment burden by an 81-98% reduction in mean annualized anti-VEGF injections

- The 2x10^11 vg/eye (2E11) dose meaningfully reduced fluid volume, including a 93% reduction in intraretinal (IRF) and 55% reduction in subretinal fluid (SRF) from baseline to week 48

- The Phase 2 LUNA trial of Ixo-vec is underway, evaluating the 2E11 and 6x10^10 vg/eye (6E10) dose with enhanced prophylactic steroid regimens for the treatment of wet AMD subjects

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Sept. 30, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Adverum Biotechnologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: ADVM), a clinical-stage company that aims to establish gene therapy as a new standard of care for highly prevalent ocular diseases, today announced new analyses from the OPTIC study treating wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD) during the Late Breaking Developments portion of Retinal Subspecialty Day at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) 2022 Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois. New data presented include the effects of ixoberogene soroparvovec (Ixo-vec, formerly referred to as ADVM-022) on control of IRF and SRF after a single, in-office, intravitreal (IVT) injection in subjects requiring frequent anti-VEGF injections for their wet AMD.

We are pleased to see Ixo-vecs effects on reducing intraretinal and subretinal fluid in treatment experienced patients in our post-hoc analysis of data generated from the OPTIC trial, commented Richard Beckman, M.D., chief medical officer of Adverum Biotechnologies. These data suggest that continuous and consistent expression of aflibercept has a stabilizing effect on the volume of both intraretinal and subretinal fluid, something that bodes well long-term. The connection between fluid fluctuations and long-term visual acuity is the subject of active research and several studies have demonstrated that less fluid fluctuation is associated with better visual outcomes.

Story continues

Data Highlights

Following a single IVT injection of a 2E11 dose of Ixo-vec in OPTIC (n=15), there was a 93% and 55% reduction in mean IRF and SRF volume, respectively, from baseline to Week 48.

The percentage of subjects with dry SRF, across both the 6E11 and 2E11 dose groups, increased through Week 48 with a 200% increase in the 2E11 dose group (n=15).

Importantly, 60% of OPTIC participants receiving the 2E11 dose had dry IRF at Week 48, representing a 50% increase from baseline.

The meaningful drying of intraretinal fluid and subretinal fluid, as well as reduced exudative volatility observed in OPTIC is highly promising, as we have started to appreciate the relationship between these anatomical outcomes and the potential role on preservation of vision long term in patients with wet AMD, stated Justis P. Ehlers, M.D., who led the advanced optical coherence tomography analysis. In addition, the increase in percentage of OPTIC patients achieving complete fluid resolution over time, through Week 48, at the 2E11 dose further reinforces the potential benefits of a single IVT injection of Ixo-vec.

Patient enrollment and dosing are currently underway in LUNA, a double-masked, randomized, Phase 2 trial. Adverum expects to conduct the trial at approximately 40 sites in the U.S. and Europe. LUNA will evaluate Ixo-vec in subjects with wet AMD who are 50 years or older and have demonstrated a response to anti-VEGF treatment. Up to 72 subjects will be randomized equally between the 2E11 dose and new lower 6E10 dose and across four prophylactic steroid regimens. Specific regimens being evaluated include topical difluprednate (Durezol), IVT dexamethasone (Ozurdex), or a combination of either topical Durezol or IVT Ozurdex with oral prednisone, with the aim of establishing a prophylactic regimen with minimal need for inflammation management post prophylaxis.

The important learnings from the OPTIC trial, such as the association between anatomical improvements and the maintenance of vision and long-term durability, were particularly encouraging, especially as a physician who sees wet AMD patients on a daily basis, said Dante Pieramici, M.D., partner, California Retinal Consultants, OPTIC investigator, and presenter of the data at AAO. I am excited to serve as an investigator in Adverums LUNA trial, and provide my wet AMD patients with a single, in-office IVT injection that can potentially serve as a functional cure to this debilitating disease.

About Wet Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Wet AMD, also known as neovascular AMD or nAMD, is an advanced form of AMD, affecting approximately 10% of patients living with AMD. Wet AMD is a leading cause of blindness in patients over 65 years of age, with a prevalence of approximately 20 million individuals worldwide living with this condition. The incidence of new cases of wet AMD is expected to grow significantly worldwide as populations age. AMD is expected to impact 288 million people worldwide by 2040, with wet AMD accounting for approximately 10% of those cases.

About LUNA Trial of Ixo-Vec in Wet AMD

Ixoberogene soroparvovec (Ixo-vec) is Adverums clinical-stage gene therapy product candidate being developed for the treatment of wet AMD. Ixo-vec utilizes a proprietary vector capsid, AAV.7m8, carrying an aflibercept coding sequence under the control of a proprietary expression cassette. Unlike other ophthalmic gene therapies that require surgery to administer the gene therapy under the retina (sub-retinal approach), Ixo-vec is designed to be administered as a one-time IVT injection in the office, deliver long-term efficacy, reduce the burden of frequent anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) injections, optimize patient compliance, and improve vision outcomes for patients with wet AMD. Ixo-vec received PRIME designation from the European Medicines Agency in June 2022.

The LUNA trial is a multicenter, double-masked, randomized, parallel-group Phase 2 study evaluating two doses of Ixo-vec, the 2x10^11 vg/eye dose and a new, lower 6x10^10 vg/eye dose, in wet AMD. The trial is designed to randomize up to 72 participants equally across two doses and four prophylactic steroid regimens in approximately 40 sites in the U.S. and Europe.

About Adverum Biotechnologies

Greys Anatomy Fans Are Having A Meltdown Over The Shocking Derek Shepherd Season 19 Twist – Yahoo Life

True Greys Anatomy Fans Caught This Derek NodVivian Zink - Getty Images

This article contains spoilers from the premiere episode of Grey's Anatomy season 19.

Fans of Grey's Anatomy, rejoice your favorite medical drama is officially back for season 19! Thursday night's premiere introduced viewers to a whole new class of interns, all with different agendas for how they want to advance at Grey Sloan. But one new face actually has ties to a fan-favorite character, and it took a bit of detective work to figure out the shocking twist no one saw coming.

In the first episode of Grey's Anatomy season 19, dedicated viewers met Lucas Adams (Niko Terho), a young man who Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) described as "charming" yet "a bit of a black sheep." His charisma rang true as he prepared to perform surgery with a group of fellow surgeons. While he described the scenario throughout the room, he utters these key words: "It's a beautiful day to save lives."

Sound familiar? As true fans know, a rather dreamy doctor used to say the exact same phrase before performing an operation: Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey).

Now, you may be wondering how Lucas could've possibly known about Derek's famous quote. As Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) remarks to Meredith, there's a wild connection between the two men. "Derek was a god to him," she begins. "And Lucas was Derek's favorite nephew."

What a way to introduce this twist! Longtime fans were shocked too, and they naturally had to react to this revelation on social media. "My heart literally stopped," one fan wrote on YouTube. "He said it! Derek's line!" another follower excitedly noted. "The fact that the actor who plays Lucas was able to nail the inflection of Patrick Dempseys delivery is wild," a different fan added.

While Lucas's connection to the Shepherd family may come out of nowhere, there's actually validity to his existence. In fact, Derek actually referred to his large family back in the second episode of the entire series. As he told Meredith in season 1, McDreamy had four sisters (Amelia, Nancy, Kathleen and Lizzie) who are not only "very girly" but had "tons of kids." He clearly made an impression on his nieces and nephews before his death from a car crash in season 11, since another Shepherd family member is seemingly here to stay.

Story continues

Now that we think about it, Grey's Anatomy actually left subtle clues to Lucas's familial ties while promoting season 19. When the character was officially announced back in July, Deadline described the character as "the charming black sheep of his family" and "determined to prove himself as a surgeon, just like many in his family that have come before him." In addition, Instagram further captioned a photo of Lucas as "ready to prove himself as worthy."

From this alone, it looks like Lucas is about to be an important character to watch this season. And we seriously can't wait.

The Anatomy of an Aerospace Engine – AeroXplorer

Airbreathing and non-airbreathing engines make up the two main categories of aerospace engines. For simplicity, Airbreathing engines (also known as airbreathers) function by utilizing the air that the aircraft is flying through, both as an oxidizer for the fuel in the combustion chamber and as a working fluid for thrust generation. Non-airbreathing engines are rocket engines in which the propellant gas is produced aboard the vehicle. A rocket engine is a type of jet propulsion system that generates thrust by ejecting stored substances known as a propellant.

Airbreathing engines are divided into 2 types: reciprocating engines and jet engines. The Wright brothers' first successful flight was propelled by a piston engine. Up until jet engines took over, it remained the predominant source of propulsion for aircraft. Piston engines with water-cooled engines were utilized from 1903 to 1908. Excess drag and weight created by liquid-cooled engines hampered airplane performance at the time. In 1908, liquid-cooled engines had been replaced by air-cooled ones, resulting in weight reductions of up 40%. However, the performance of these air-cooled engines fell short of expectations. To increase the efficiency of air-cooled aircraft, The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) created a cowling that encased the engine. This engine enclosure restricted the passage of air over the engine cylinders to air in contact with the cooling fins of the cylinders.

However, piston engines were much too heavy to compete with jet engines in terms of power output. The capacity to fly at greater altitudes and at faster speeds with simpler control is one of the most evident benefits of jet engines versus reciprocating engines. The increased airflow makes cooling less difficult. On the other hand, the continuous ignition system of the reciprocating engines is not required, spark plugs are only utilized for the startup. There is no need for a carburetor or a mixture control.

The first jet engines appeared in the 1940s, and during the next 60 years, they underwent enormous progress that has continued to this day. Whether they are turbojets, turbofans, or turboprops, the engines utilized in some aircraft applications are all collectively referred to as "jet engines."

Blinken admits he thought US would have an Embassy in Kabul before troops’ withdrawal – Republic World

Afghanistan, which has witnessed the worst-ever crisis since the ouster of the democratically elected government, was left abandoned by America nearly 15 months ago, after cutting all ties with the Taliban-led government. However, a top official in the Biden administration believes the US would have maintained a diplomatic presence in Kabul through 2021 and into 2022 prior to withdrawal from Afghanistan.

According to a report by Politico, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's critical remarks came while recording a documentary for an American pay television network- HBO. The special program will be on-aired on Wednesday. He acknowledged that the administration could not apprehend that the condition would turn more worst than US officials had underscored. According to Blinken, the administration had worked on certain assumptions.

"I believed strongly that we were going to have a robust embassy presence in Kabul certainly through the year [2021], well into the next year," Blinken said in the documentary. "Everything that we planned and did was based on that assumption." The HBO documentary "Year One: A Political Odyssey" which will be premiered on October 19, emphasises how the Biden administration acted with good intentions but did not turn out as satisfactorily as planned. Documentary director John Maggio reportedly said that the Biden administration has analysed all mistakes that led to the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and added it tried to rectify all those in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

Earlier last year, when the US pulled its forces, thus pushing the country into a vulnerable state, nearly all Afghans expressed deep concerns about their life. According to a recent survey by Gallups Negative Experience Index, it categorised the country is the unhappiest nation in the world. The report found that people are still facing physical pain, mental stress, mental disorders triggered by poverty and unemployment, anxiety and anger, in the past 1.4 years of the extremist government. The survey claims that 80% of Afghans are worried and disturbed while 74% of the mental stresses induced by poverty are caused by unemployment. A survey conducted last year found nearly 53% of the countrymen wished to leave Afghanistan, citing uncertainties in the Taliban regime.

Hand Anatomy – eOrthopod.com

Introduction

Few structures of the human anatomy are as unique as the hand. The hand needs to be mobile in order to position the fingers and thumb. Adequate strength forms the basis for normal hand function. The hand also must be coordinated to perform fine motor tasks with precision. The structures that form and move the hand require proper alignment and control in order for normal hand function to occur.

In addition to reading this article, be sure to watch our Hand Anatomy Animated Tutorial Video.

This guide will help you understand

The important structures of the hand can be divided into several categories. These include

The front, or palm-side, of the hand is referred to as the palmar side. The back of the hand is called the dorsal side.

Bones and Joints

There are 27 bones within the wrist and hand. The wrist itself contains eight small bones, called carpals. The carpals join with the two forearm bones, the radius and ulna, forming the wrist joint. Further into the palm, the carpals connect to the metacarpals. There are five metacarpals forming the palm of the hand. One metacarpal connects to each finger and thumb. Small bone shafts called phalanges line up to form each finger and thumb.

The main knuckle joints are formed by the connections of the phalanges to the metacarpals. These joints are called the metacarpophalangeal joints (MCP joints). The MCP joints work like a hinge when you bend and straighten your fingers and thumb.

The three phalanges in each finger are separated by two joints, called interphalangeal joints (IP joints). The one closest to the MCP joint (knuckle) is called the proximal IP joint (PIP joint). The joint near the end of the finger is called the distal IP joint (DIP joint). The thumb only has one IP joint between the two thumb phalanges. The IP joints of the digits also work like hinges when you bend and straighten your fingers and thumb.

The joints of the hand, fingers, and thumb are covered on the ends with articular cartilage. This white, shiny material has a rubbery consistency. The function of articular cartilage is to absorb shock and provide an extremely smooth surface tofacilitate motion. There is articular cartilage essentially everywhere that two bony surfaces move against one another, or articulate.

Ligaments and Tendons

Ligaments are tough bands of tissue that connect bones together. Two important structures, called collateral ligaments, are found on either side of each finger and thumb joint. The function of the collateral ligaments is to prevent abnormal sideways bending of each joint.

In the PIP joint (the middle joint between the main knuckle and the DIP joint), the strongest ligament is the volar plate. This ligament connects the proximal phalanx to the middle phalanx on the palm side of the joint. The ligament tightens as the joint is straightened and keeps the PIP joint from bending back too far (hyperextending). Finger deformities can occur when the volar plate loosens from disease or injury.

The tendons that allow each finger joint to straighten are called the extensor tendons. The extensor tendons of the fingers begin as muscles that arise from the backside of the forearm bones. These muscles travel towards the hand, where they eventually connect to the extensor tendons before crossing over the back of the wrist joint. As they travel into the fingers, the extensor tendons become the extensor hood. The extensor hood flattens out to cover the top of the finger and sends out branches on each side that connect to the bones in the middle and end of the finger.

The place where the extensor tendon attaches to the middle phalanx is called the central slip. When the extensor muscles contract, they tug on the extensor tendon and straighten the finger. Problems occur when the central slip is damaged, as can happen with a tear.

Muscles

Many of the muscles that control the hand start at the elbow or forearm. They run down the forearm and cross the wrist and hand. Some control only the bending or straightening of the wrist. Others influence motion of the fingers or thumb. Many of these muscles help position and hold the wrist and hand while the thumb and fingers grip or perform fine motor actions.

Most of the small muscles that work the thumb and pinky finger start on the carpal bones. These muscles connect in ways that allow the hand to grip and hold. Two muscles allow the thumb to move across the palm of the hand, an important function called thumb opposition.

The smallest muscles that originate in the wrist and hand are called the intrinsic muscles. The intrinsic muscles guide the fine motions of the fingers by getting the fingers positioned and holding them steady during hand activities.

Nerves

All of the nerves that travel to the hand and fingers begin together at the shoulder: the radial nerve, the median nerve, and the ulnar nerve. These nerves carry signals from the brain to the muscles that move the arm, hand, fingers, and thumb. The nerves also carry signals back to the brain about sensations such as touch, pain, and temperature.

The radial nerve runs along the thumb-side edge of the forearm. It wraps around the end of the radius bone toward the back of the hand. It gives sensation to the back of the hand from the thumb to the third finger. It also supplies the back of the thumb and just beyond the main knuckle of the back surface of the ring and middle fingers.

The median nerve travels through a tunnel within the wrist called the carpal tunnel. This nerve gives sensation to the thumb, index finger, long finger, and half of the ring finger. It also sends a nerve branch to control the thenar muscles of the thumb. The thenar muscles help move the thumb and let you touch the pad of the thumb to the tips each of each finger on the same hand, a motion called opposition.

The ulnar nerve travels through a separate tunnel, called Guyons canal. This tunnel is formed by two carpal bones, the pisiform and hamate, and the ligament that connects them. After passing through the canal, the ulnar nerve branches out to supply feeling to the little finger and half the ring finger. Branches of this nerve also supply the small muscles in the palm and the muscle that pulls the thumb toward the palm.

The nerves that travel to the hand are subject to problems. Constant bending and straightening of the wrist and fingers can lead to irritation or pressure on the nerves within their tunnels and cause problems such as pain, numbness, and weakness in the hand, fingers, and thumb.

Blood Vessels

Traveling along with the nerves are the large vessels that supply the hand with blood. The largest artery is the radial artery that travels across the front of the wrist, closest to the thumb. The radial artery is where the pulse is taken in the wrist. The ulnar artery runs next to the ulnar nerve through Guyons canal (mentioned earlier). The ulnar and radial arteries arch together within the palm of the hand, supplying the front of the hand, fingers, and thumb. Other arteries travel across the back of the wrist to supply the back of the hand, fingers, and thumb.

The hand is formed of numerous structures that have an important role in normal hand function. Conditions that change the way these structures work can greatly impact whether the hand functions normally. When our hands are free of problems, its easy to take the complex anatomy of the hand for granted.
