Anatomy of a Play: Josh Jacobs walk-off TD against the Chargers – Silver And Black Pride

Faced with a 4-point deficit in the waning minutes of the 4th quarter against the Chargers, the Raiders offense orchestrated a 75-yard drive, capped off by an 18-yard touchdown score by rookie RB Josh Jacobs.

Oaklands offense struggled for much of the night and were held to their lowest total yards output on the season. When they needed it the most, however, the offensive line opened a hole that allowed Jacobs to break free for a touchdown. How did it happen? Lets take a look.

The Chargers stack the box against the Raiders heavy run look with eight defenders. Derek Carr sends Darren Waller across the formation in motion to line up in the slot. Watch how the linebackers adjust, each moving over a full gap to the left side of the offense. The Chargers are clearly thinking the run play will hit behind the right side of the offensive line.

Lets back up to a previous play, where the Raiders used a pre-snap motion. I counted seven previous rush attempts where the offense ran directly towards the motion man. The Chargers defense picked up on this tendency and cheated their linebackers towards the motion man all night. This defensive adjustment made it difficult for the run game to gain much ground, and the Chargers held the Raiders to their lowest rushing output all season.

Knowing the Raiders ran towards the motion man all night, it makes sense why the Chargers linebackers are selling out to stop run towards the right side of the offense. Each defender has a gap and the free player is there to adjust to the potential hole opened on a lead block from the fullback. This leaves a defensive back with B-Gap responsibility on the backside of the play; a chink in the defense that the Chargers are willing to live with because no run had hit there before.

However, this play-call is designed to be a cutback and puts a pass-first defender is a tough spot to make a play in an unfavorable position. Also, credit Kolton Millers block of Joey Bosa, who creates a pile that prevents the Pro Bowl DE from scraping over to the open hole.

This was a great play call to take advantage of the Chargers defensive adjustments and aggressive play. It also speaks to the Raiders resiliency on offense when they had been running into a wall all game, yet still believed something good was still going to happen. The Raiders offensive line, fullback, and rising star tailback make it easy to believe.

Mitosis: Anatomy of a Custom Keyboard – Hackaday

Ergonomic. Wireless. Low-latency. Minimalist. Efficient. How far do you go when you design your own open-source keyboard? Checking off these boxes and providing the means for others to do so, Redditor [reverse_bias] presents the Mitosis keyboard, and this thing is cool.

The custom, split as the namesake implies mechanical keyboard has 23 keys on each 10 cm x 10 cm half, and, naturally, a custom keymapping for optimal personal use.

Upper and lower PCBs host the keys and electronic circuits respectively, contributing to the sleek finished look. Key caps and mechanical switches were ripped from sacrificial boards: two Waveshare core51822 Bluetooth modules are used for communication, with a third module paired with a Pro Micro make up the receiver.[reverse_bias] spent a fair bit of time attempting to minimize the power consumption of the keyboard so it could be powered by a pair of coin batteries, giving it an estimated six month lifespan of daily use. These are pinched between the upper and lower boards by little dabs of solder and the slight spring tension of the boards themselves. However, a bit of de-soldering is required to change the battery.

Laser-cut adhesive neoprene adorns the base, proving a comfortable springiness, grip, and protection for the pins as well as cushioning from any debris on the desk. The final product has almost zero flex, has a low enough profile to negate the need for a wrist rest. If youre interested in building your own, [reverse_bias] has linked all the relevant files here.

Of course, one could always go the opposite way and opt for a more heavyweight option.

Anatomy of an Inferno: How the Columbia River Gorge Fire Raced Out of Control – Willamette Week

The Columbia River Gorge is ablaze.

Oregon is a tinderbox, and the Gorge fire joins dozens of other wildfires burning across the state. But rarely has a fire burned such an iconic wilderness so close to Portland. Ash began drifting across the city Sept. 4 like a dirty snowstorm, the heaviest such fall many residents could recall since the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980.

A look at the fire's progress shows how quickly it grew out of control, in a perfect storm of record heat, parched forests, high winds and teenage horseplay.

3:30 pm, Saturday, Sept. 2: A 15-year-old Vancouver, Wash., boy is seen tossing firecrackers off a cliff into the Eagle Creek canyon while a friend films the stunt (read a recounting here). Hikers soon observe trees on fire, and the trail to Punch Bowl Falls is choked with smoke. (1)

6 pm Saturday, Sept. 2: More than 150 hikers are trapped between the Eagle Creek fire and an ongoing blaze, the Indian Creek fire. They sleep overnight on the Eagle Creek Trail before a search-and-rescue team can retrieve them at Wahtum Lake on Sunday morning. (2)

7:25 am Sunday, Sept. 3: Feeding on a bone-dry forest, the fire grows to 3,200 acres. Evacuation notices are issued for parts of the town of Cascade Locks. (3)

4:15 pm Monday, Sept. 4: East winds push through the Gorge, spreading the fire rapidly west. State officials begin evacuating the towns of Warrendale and Dodson, and shut down 27 miles of Interstate 84. (4)

11 pm Monday, Sept. 4: Officials announce the fire has raced 4 miles in less than three hours, growing to 4,800 acres. "With strong winds like this, fire is impossible to fight," warns the National Weather Service's Portland office. "Focus is on evacuating areas in danger." (5)

5 am Tuesday, Sept. 5: The fire roars another 8 miles west through the Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness, with winds blowing embers from ridge to ridge. Flames surround Multnomah Falls and are seen near Crown Point. Residents of parts of Troutdale are told to be ready to leave. (6)

10,000Minimum number of acres burning in the Columbia River Gorge at press deadline.

400Number of homes evacuated in the Gorge, including the towns of Corbett, Bridal Veil and Warrendale.

0Number of buildings damaged in the first 72 hours of the blaze.

Sept. 30Date state officials expect to have the wildfire completely under control.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Poll: Will Dr. Stephanie Edwards Be Found Dead or … – BuddyTV (blog)

Being a doctor at Grey Sloane (formerly Seattle Grace/Seattle Grace Mercy West) Hospital ain't easy. Sure, everybody is incredibly hot, and each physician performs miracles on a daily basis, but the staff also has the bad luckof being killed off tragically. On Grey's Anatomy, the latest possible casualty to start her shift and not ever clock out (or punch out using the big time clock in the sky) is Dr. Stephanie Edwards. Edwards is the Top Gun of surgical residents, the best of the best, but the words "bright future" took on a whole new meaning when, at the end of episode 23, "True Colors," Edwards was caught in an explosion ignited by one burning, homicidal maniac and some oxygen tanks. Will Edwards be found alive, or will all that's left be a charcoal briquette? Grey's Anatomy Prepares to Lose a Doctor>>>

Why She's Dead

After being taken hostage by a rapist, Edwards found herself trapped on a floor of the hospital with the man, Keith, and a young girl, Erin, when the hospital was put on lockdown. In a last-ditch effort to escape, Keith decided to light a fire to trigger the sprinklers and open a door. To save herself and Erin, Edwards doused Keith with some flammable liquid, and took cover with the girl in a nearby room. But Keith inconveniently decided to drop dead near some oxygen tanks, forcing Edwards to try and derail the inevitable outcome.

The last viewers saw, a hugeexplosion threw Edwards backwards. If Edwards survived the blast, she's still trapped in a burning building, likely unconscious, in serious need of medical attention and second in line to be rescued behind a child.

The whole scenario was outlandish anyway, but for Edwards to escape two near-death experiences is unlikely. At least this way, Edwards gets to be a hero.

Why She's Alive

Yes, some doctors have been electrocuted, shot and mangled beyond repair, but others survived a drowning, a brain tumor and cancer. Callie Torres, Cristina Yang and Preston Burke all moved on to greener pastures as opposed to the great beyond, leaving the hospital on their feet as opposed toin abody bag.

It's almost a foregone conclusion that Edward's is dead, which is why she could live. Her predicament couldserve asa distraction as some other beloved character unexpectedly meets an unfortunate end. Shonda does love surprises!

It would be brutal to kill off Edwards, who prevailed over sickle-cell disease in her childhood andhas gone on tobecome a promising surgeon. If Edwards is rescued, she's going to be severely traumatized (andprobably not real pretty)which would pave the way for her to exit to get some much-needed counseling and skin grafting. Maybe she'll move on to a hospital where the death toll for the docs isn't quite so high. Either way, the door would remain open for Edwards to return.

Does Grey's Anatomy need to stop killing off its doctors? Did Edwards' storyline jump the shark with back-to-back kidnapping and explosion? Will you miss her character? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

"Chapter Twelve: Anatomy Of A Murder" – A.V. Club

Well that was an intense episode of television.

It was to be expected, of course. From the beginning, Riverdale has been the type of show to go full speed ahead, no matter what. Ms. Grundy is perhaps the one notable exception, but that character and storyline were also the necessary exception. Riverdale has gone full tilt since Chapter One, so there was never any reason to expect the penultimate episode of the seasonwith the promise of the reveal of Jason Blossoms murdererwould be any different. Still, the very fact that Riverdale actually delivered on that promise to reveal the killer (without any strings attached) is a big deal. Because while it might sound like delivering on said promise is actually expected, shows like Pretty Little Liars and The Killing giving television mystery fans plenty of reason to be skeptical about such things.

Also, how amazing is it that Riverdale use The CWs event of the week structure to unveil a murderer?

But even before we get to the answer of who really murdered Jason Blossom, Chapter Twelve: Anatomy Of A Murder spends a good portion of its time asking why F.P. Jones would take the fall for Jasons death. What should be a relatively easy case to fightdue to a planted gun and F.P.s contingency planturns very quickly as F.P. takes the fall for Jasons murder. And while his story adds up, it also does so with declarations that the audience knows to be absolutely false, like the mention of the Sheriffs missing files (which wed already known Hal Cooper stole). Plus, we already know the gun was planted in his trailer. So F.P.s motivation obviously has to be that of a man protecting another person, and while I simply assumed he was being paid off to take the fall, it turns out that the actual killer threatened Jugheads life. F.P. and Jughead have obviously had a rocky relationship, but Riverdale has done a pretty good job of showing just how much they both love each other, even through all the bad times and this episode is the absolute worst time, as evidenced by the scene where F.P. coldly tells Jughead that hes a murderer and to never come see him again.

The thing is, despite the reveal that F.P. isnt a murderer, it still turns out he was responsible for the freezing and dumping of the body, as well as the torching of Jasons car, as assumedso hes still got quite a few reasons to be locked up for a long time. As for the actual murderer, that would be Clifford Blossom, with the help of his many guns. However, the reason why he killed Jason is still very much up in the air (and possibly now in the grave with him). But it needs to be said: Long before we even get to the truth about Clifford Blossom, the episode is already aces.

For starters, Chapter Twelve is easily Archies best episode and a long time coming. Hell, Archie is the one who puts two and two together to get to the bus station to look for Jughead, which is unbelievable thinking coming from him. A large part of why this episode works for Archie is that, like last week, Archies motivation and involvement in this investigation are 100% fueled by his desire to help Jughead out. Only this time, he doesnt have to betray the guy in the process. After the way this series began, Id say Archie has made good on his promise to make things up to Jughead, even if there werent a lot of hamburgers along the way. (Though, at this point, Archie is actually making up for the combination of blowing up Jugheads spot about his dad being a Serpent and Jugheads birthday party.) Id argue that the best way to look at how Archie is right now is to look at how Bettys been the entire season. Besides her friendship with Veronica, part of what made the Betty character so magnetic from the very beginning was how fiercely committed to the truth and goodness she was, while also fighting to show people she wasnt as perfect as everyone assumed or expected. Archie Andrews is far from perfect, whether its the comics or this showbut hes at his best when hes committed to that same standard of truth and goodness. While its easy to laugh at Archie when he says that Jugheads new school situation isnt fair (welcome to the world, kid), its at least a good sign that this kid truly does care about whats right and wrong. Its a big part of why the Ms. Grundy plot was such a misstep: It heavily relied on Archie not caring about what was wrong and what was right. And had test audiences not hated it so much, that version of Archie wouldve existed even longer. While Riverdale got it right from the beginning with Archie in the sense that hes just an average teenager who struggles to do the right thing, that relationship was just wrong on so many levels. It made it impossible to root for him in his struggles. Then it ended, and we were still stuck with the music of Archie But at least we can always have fun at those stories expense.

That doesnt mean Archie is no longer the slowest member of the Riverdale Scooby Gang though. He may be at the top of his game in this episode, but he still suggests early on that he, Veronica, and Betty all tell their parents whats going on. At this (awful, as it turns out) suggestion, Betty Cooper legitimately makes the greatest WTF? Why are you the way that you are? face in the history of moving pictures:

Speaking of Betty, this episode is a showcase for the character and her aforementioned commitment to truth and goodness, as she is the one personthrough all the roadblocks and supposed evidencewho never lets up on finding out who the real killer is and proving that F.P. is innocent. She also has a superb moment against Penelope Blossom, a character whos also at the top of her abusive game this episode:

Penelope: You made a grave error, little girl. Betty: No, I dont think so. And Im not going to stop until I prove it.

The confidence in that responseits another one of those moments where you see just how much Betty is her mothers daughter, and despite its brevity, its also standout moment for Lili Reinhart. Its a moment that reminds the aware and informs the unaware that Betty Cooper is the hero of this story, and what a capable hero she is. On the one hand, I suppose Reinhart will technically always be a highlight on this show simply because of her stance on Archie being the original fuckboy; but Betty remains a consistent highlight because of just how dedicated she is to the truth, her friends, her family, and to Jughead. As Kevin says, Nancy Drew strikes again, and you know what? If theres anyone on Riverdale Id want on my team when the world comes crashing down, its Betty Cooper. Betty Cooper is a role model.

Bettys confrontation with Penelope is also a moment from the single greatest scene of this episode and possibly Riverdales entirety: The Coopers bulldozing their way into Thornhill in the middle of the night, with Alice Cooper having absolutely no qualms about shouting incest to anyone who will listen and the Blossom parents having even fewer qualms about incest at all. I suppose it all shouldve been less of a shock in a way, considering how both families say grandpappy as if thats the standard nomenclature. But once Hal reveals to Alice and Betty that this Hatfields and McCoys feud theyve supposedly been living is actually an extended family version of Family Feud, Riverdale goes on to achieve heights once only imagined in the context of those darn Blossom twins. Thanks to almost everything Cheryl says and does, incest has been a popular Riverdale topic of conversation, but the fact that the show not only makes it a reality but also makes it between its own version of Romeo and (pregnant, with twins) Juliet is truly inspired in how twisted it is. After all this time comparing Riverdale to Veronica Marsincluding the concept of Polly and Jason as this series Veronica and Duncan in terms of their break-upRiverdale actually goes that extra step further and makes the threat of incest a reality. This also means that Cheryl, a character who can barely be discussed by the audience without at least a passing mention to her feelings for her brother, was screwed
out of incest. But Jason wasnt. The fact that Clifford Blossom only draws the line at brother/sister incest is basically a personal attack on Cheryl, but its also the type of faux boundary that shows you just how surreal and over-the-top the scene is. Its everything you want in a non-dining Blossom scene and more, and its here in the penultimate episode of the season.

Archie purists probably hate the reveal, but when it comes to Riverdale, its pretty much what the series promised in a way. Its sick, its twisted, and its farther than anyone could have possibly imagined or expected theyd actually go. Long live The CW. Also, as I mentioned Pretty Little Liars before, that shows own final A reveal somehow managed to gloss over what it pretty much treated as minor incest between brother (also a Jason) and sister (knowingly engaging in this relationship). So with that context, theres clearly a right and wrong way to approach this type of story.

All of this sends Cheryl into an infantile fugue state for the rest of the episode, as she tries to get the truth from her mommy and daddy, only to either be jerked around to a barn full of sticky, dark, dirty truth in syrup form or receive news that her father murdered her beloved J.J. Cheryl is absolutely out of it for this entire episode, no longer even gaining strength from all the attention she gets from people congratulating her on her brothers alleged killer being caught. Yet shes still a highlight of this episode as she attempts to navigate her familys secrets through the syrupy haze that is her state of mind. Its as though shes in a dreamlike state as the rest of the world goes on and on, and she doesnt even snap out of it as she points Sheriff Keller to her fathers location in the barn. This is the episode that made me realize just how fascinating of a choice it is that Cheryl really has no part in solving the mystery of her brothers murder. At all. Sure, she begrudgingly helped when it came to the playbook, but that was very small potatoes compared to this. So maybe deep down she realized someone in her family killed Jason, because her lack of involvement doesnt exactly line-up with someone who, at the beginning of the series, promised to lead the charge in finding Jasons killer and bringing them to justice. All talk, Cheryl Bombshell. All talk.

And Cheryl isnt just detached from the investigation; shes the complete opposite of Betty in this episode, to the point where they might just be different sides of the same coin. One might think that better describes Cheryl and the also proactive Veronica, but Riverdale has made it clear that those two are pretty much the same side of the same coin. Only, where Cheryl confronts her father in personwith the dead inside line, You did a bad thing, daddy. And now everyone knows.Veronica chooses instead to slander her fathers name around town, hoping it sticks. Betty and Cheryl both want the truth to be revealed, but while Betty knocks down doors to find it, Cheryl does all of it behind closed doors. And while Betty does it with all the energy in the world, Cheryls regular zest for life and mayhem just up and disappears within the walls of Thornhill.

With Veronica literally entering scenes demanding her father be responsible for murder and Kevins inability to realize his gang member boyfriend is a criminal even pre-clean-up reveal, this is certainly an episode that requires the mantra, Theyre just teens. Theyre just teens. Luckily, this is such a strong episode that teenage nature really cant bring it down. But trust me, the Kevin stuff here really tries. However, I wont mark this episode down because of the Kevin/Joaquin of it all, because its really the result of an overall problem with their story and not a problem that is unique to Chapter Twelve. In fact, this episode does the best it possibly can to salvage this relationship, even though it doesnt address the fact that Joaquin was put with Kevin as an assignment (though Kevin appears to get it when he says he really doesnt know Joaquin). At the same time, Kevins continued refusal to believe that Joaquin would have ulterior motives and be following the orders of his gang member boss, plus Kevins newfound realization that Joaquins a criminal (despite said gang affiliation being known from the start), is as frustrating as a typical Archie plot.

Honestly, the fact that Joaquins bus out of town is heading toward to San Junipero singlehandedly saves their plot. Thats even after Joaquin sends off with the line, Im gonna miss you, preppy, which reads of something that would have been perfect for an actual storyline where the audience got to see the beginning, middle, and end of their pairing. Its a line that feels like part of a story that doesnt exist, either because of deleted scenes or just because it was never written. As I wrote last week, hopefully Casey Cott is upgraded to series regular next season and then allowed to have full stories. Though, in the case of a series regular who has been M.I.A. lately (barring the bit of Pussycats from last weeks opening), Josies story for this season apparently ended with her terrible father... Which, while unfortunate, is at least a rather complete conclusion to a plot that has absolutely nothing to do with the major mystery.

But when it comes to real full stories, this episode tells us something we shouldve known all along, as Archies true purpose on Riverdale is revealed: to wear Jason Blossoms hand-me-downs and spark either eureka moments or strange face-stroking moments. What that means for the season finale, well have to wait and see.

Scam Alert: Anatomy Of A Scam – Caledonian Record

A recent headline in the Berkshire Eagle (Pittsfield, MA) read Police: Man took 120-mile Uber ride to rob Lenox woman. Break-ins, robberies, and abductions sadly are crimes we see on the increase throughout the region, but most do not evolve out of telephone scams. This time it did. The situation developed over a matter of months from a routine telephone scam. The victim, an elderly woman in Lenox, Massachusetts, received a number of calls from a New York man living outside New York City. In trying to scam $1500, his calls began with a promised payment of $3 million but over time turned into a frightening threat. In late February, the alleged criminal hired an Uber driver to take him to Lenox where he forced his way into her home and had her drive to her Pittsfield, MA, bank for money. Alert bank employees notified police and the man was arrested before he could do further harm.

The incident raises a number of questions does this scenario occur frequently? Arent scamming telephone calls one shot efforts? Do con artists have access to my personal information? What can I do if I think someone is trying to scam me?

There is a generally false impression that telephone scams are one shot efforts? That is probably the result of the most frequently reported scamming call the IRS Scam. Here, the call is usually initiated by a computer program generating random telephone numbers; the calls usually originate from overseas as single blind or shotgun calling. Some of the more serious telephone scamming is a form of what can be called Spear Phishing where the criminal has a specific victim or type of victim in mind. This was most likely the case in Lenox. This scenario is not the most frequently used technique as it requires time to condition the victim. Often the con artist will make multiple calls over a period of weeks or months in order to collect bits of information inadvertently given out by the intended victim such as age, marital status, community involvement, personal health and much more. These volunteered facts then become the basis for the con artist to endear himself or herself to the victim. It is no surprise that the female victim in Lenox could become a target without providing much information. Con artists are able to collect personal details on intended victims from publicly accessible data files on the internet. All that is really needed is a name and a town of residence to retrieve demographic and financial data from public records free of charge or for a nominal price. In addition to using the readily available information, successful scammers apply a series of psychological techniques to manipulate their targets: profiling collection and use of information detailing the intended victim; phantom riches describing a significant prize or award that will be coming to the targeted person; source credibility projecting an image of importance or trust to the intended victim.. Finally, if all the pleasant approaches fail, the scammer will turn to fear and intimidation, as was true in the Lenox case with a threat to burn down your house.

There are clear steps to take if you feel you may be the target of a scam. Do not answer phone calls displaying caller ID numbers you do not recognize. Let these callers leave a message on your answering machine. Second, if you answer the phone and the caller begins to make you an offer you simply cannot refuse, hang up the phone. Ask yourself in a country of over 325 million people, why would I be approached for a substantial gift from a stranger?

Dont engage in small talk with an unknown person. It can result in providing information that can be used against you. If you or people you know are threatened with personal harm or property damage, report the incident to law enforcement including any identifiable information such as names, telephone numbers, details of the call.

The situation in Lenox was not common but illustrates that incidents need to be taken seriously. As I frequently write, reporting a scam is easy. Contact your Attorney Generals Office:

Whiteout, Part 2: The anatomy of a Colorado ski death | SummitDaily … – Summit Daily News

Part 2 of a three-part series. Read Part 1 of Whiteout.

Kristine Gustafson wakes up each morning with the same thought: What really happened on Jan. 12, 2017?

Late in the afternoon on a chilly but clear powder day, the Centennial resident, her close friend Sean Haberthier and three other skiers were standing at the top of Breckenridge Ski Resort's Peak 8 Contest Bowl. They stopped to take a break and appreciate the near-perfect conditions they had marked with fresh tracks the whole day. They all agreed to meet at the bottom of the E Chair before a final run to the base.

Always the first one down, Haberthier was a conspicuous no-show, an instant red flag to the group. Calls to his cellphone went unanswered, and his friends began to worry.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION: Click image below for an immersive story presentation. Or continue the story below.

The 47-year-old lived to ski, for years making the 5 a.m. drive up to Summit or Vail from Denver most days during the winter to pursue his passion. It was not out of the ordinary for Haberthier to eclipse well over 100 days each season.

"You had to pry him away from it," said Gustafson. "He approached it almost like a job and never missed a powder day. He'd bring his lunch with him and would get antsy if anyone he was with even had to go to the bathroom because he wanted to get every single moment in on the day."

When Haberthier collided with a tree on the Lower Boneyard run that Thursday, he became the third skier to die at a resort in Colorado this season No. 127 overall since the 2006-07 season.

To his friends, though, he wasn't yet a statistic when they alerted ski patrol of his disappearance that evening. Final evening sweeps of the mountain found nothing, and officials from the resort and the sheriff's office suggested he might have headed into town to join the annual Ullr Fest revelry. Haberthier's friends braced for bad news.

Sixteen hours passed in the frigid cold before a search party finally found Haberthier's remains the next morning in a tucked-away stand of lodgepole pines. A 4-inch gash ran across the back of his head, which the coroner would later assign as the cause of death, despite his friends still having questions.

"It's been hard on all of us," said Gustafson. "I just can't explain the feeling of him being there one second, and then us standing at the bottom waiting, with my gut telling me to go back up and look. They tell me he died on impact, but what if he didn't? What if he was just unconscious and something could have been done? The thought of him being out there all night by himself, it's shattered me."

FRONT LINES

At least 137 people have died skiing at Colorado resorts since the 2006-07 season. More than 40 percent of those deaths occurred at one of Summit County's four ski areas, among the most heavily trafficked winter sports destinations in the nation. Over the past 10 years, Summit County has seen 58 ski-related fatalities far more than any other county in the state.

So far this season, Colorado has recorded 13 ski deaths. Five of them, including Sean Haberthier, happened at Breckenridge Ski Resort, one of North America's most popular ski areas.

By volume, Summit County's Regan Wood is one of the busiest coroners in the state, if not the country, when it comes to ski death investigations. She's on the front lines of every fatality in the county, observing firsthand the trends behind the tragedies the overdoses, the suicides, the altitude-related heart attacks.

However, Wood holds an elected position that largely flies under the public's radar. In Colorado, coroners are not required to have a medical background. The only qualifications for making a run at the office are a high school diploma, a clean criminal record and one year of residency in the county. It would seem that politics has little to do with investigating deaths. And, for the most part, that rings true for Wood.

"I'm the least political elected official you'll ever meet," she said. "I do not like politics, I like death investigation. My passion lies with my families. Politics is a sideline of the job."

Not unlike other mountain town residents, Wood has worn many hats since she moved to Summit County 25 years ago to ski. She slung lift tickets at Copper Mountain Resort; volunteered for the Advocates for Victims of Assault, a group she eventually ran; and, in 2008, started on a new career path as a deputy coroner.

Coroners and their deputies are charged with determining the cause and manner of death. They do this by reading the signs on the body, studying the environment where the deceased met his or her end, obtaining toxicology tests, taking scans, securing medical records and interviewing family members. Often, the coroner calls for an autopsy, a procedure conducted by a medically trained pathologist. It is the gold standard for death investigations, according to experts.

It's a job for someone with a strong stomach, and Wood dove into it headfirst. The position became her life's calling.

Although state law requires only minimal training, Wood binged on internships, courses and certifications. Eventually, when her mentor left office, she put her name in the hat to take his place. Running unopposed as a Republican, she took the oath of office in January 2015.

Still a devout skier, she prides herself on getting out on the mountain at least three times a week. But, given a swelling county population and increasing popularity of Summit's resorts, there's been a rising tide of ski fatalities, and Wood has had to make even more trips to the resorts each winter.

Wood is confident that she investigates each case thoroughly.

However, of the 58 ski-related fatalities recorded in Summit County over the past 10 years, only five autopsies have been performed. That's a stark contrast to coroners in most other counties with ski areas. And in a deaths where an autopsy was not called, Colorado's open records law significantly narrows the amount of available public information.

'A LONE RANGER'

By the time Sean Haberthier was found at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 13, his body was so hardened from the overnight freeze that he'd have to thaw out so a physical exam could be completed.

For a skier or snowboarder at a resort to have a serious accident and not be immediately attended to is abnormal. In a typical case, ski patrollers, certified in emergency medical care, are alerted, arrive quickly and attempt to save the person's life.

When Wood responds to the scene of a fatality, she tries to understand the circumstances of the death by interviewing witnesses. For Haberthier's accident, there were none.

After concluding the manner of death as accidental, the body is moved to the morgue and a series of tests, including X-rays and CT scans, is conducted. In this case, each assisted with understanding just how serious a blow to the head Haberthier suffered when he slammed into a tree.

To help determine someone's cause of death, the county coroner has at her disposal forensic pathologists to perform autopsies. From board-certified medical examiners to researchers for the National Institutes of Health, the postmortem exam is considered a hallmark of diagnosis. It is used to definitively come to scientific conclusions by closely analyzing a decedent's body and internal organs.

However, state statute grants considerable freedom to coroners for whether to call for the procedure. According to National Association of Medical Examiners standards, autopsies are required in particular types of deaths, including car crashes, aircraft accidents, drownings, electrocutions and fatalities associated with police activity. Ski accidents don't make the cut, but many coroner's offices still order autopsies in those cases.

"They should all undergo an autopsy with rare exception," Dr. Jim Caruso, Denver County coroner, said of ski deaths. "Most accidental death
s of any sort should be autopsied."

Caruso is an uncommon breed in Colorado. He is the only coroner required to be a forensic pathologist. Denver, along with Pitkin and Weld, are Colorado's only three counties to do away with the elected system for coroner in favor of appointing an individual with an established medical background.

"I wouldn't have taken the job otherwise," said Caruso, adding that because he's neither elected nor deals in politics, "I have no reason to make decisions based on non-medical factors."

Meanwhile, in the state's other counties with ski resorts, the data shows an autopsy is conducted on those who died in a ski-related accident between 70 percent and 100 percent of the time.

But taking a page out of the book of her two predecessors, Wood calls autopsies on a very small number of ski deaths. Instead she relies heavily on her instincts and instruction as a certified death investigator, rather than conforming to the norms followed by the majority of her peers across the state.

"I feel we do a good job investigating accidental deaths and doing a comprehensive investigation, taking it all in and asking all the questions," said Wood. "We're not here to do autopsies for medical curiosity."

For many of the state's coroners, though, the autopsy isn't about intrigue. It's about ensuring a higher level of certainty.

"Even though a death may look obvious due to trauma, I always want to know if that may have been induced by outside influences," said Emil Santos, coroner of San Miguel County where Telluride Ski Resort resides. "We almost always find something that could be considered a contributing factor in someone's death. (We) don't want any surprises."

Routt County Coroner Rob Ryg, a 15-year vet of the area Steamboat Ski Resort calls home, agreed. He cited the example of a 40-year-old San Antonio woman who plummeted 25 feet to her death from a chairlift in December at Ski Granby Ranch where the cause and manner both appeared obvious and yet neighboring Grand County still opted for the postmortem procedure.

"Often I know what happened, but I'm just going to do an autopsy," said Ryg. "It's better to have a pathologist to say he did not have a heart attack, he died of this. It's just a lot cleaner and a lot simpler that way.

"I don't know what the response would be for not doing more autopsies," he added of Summit. "They're kind of a lone ranger."

Wood said she often doesn't see the need.

"I can't speak to what their thoughts are," Wood said of her fellow state coroners. "It's their office policy. I'm comfortable with ours. And why are we spending taxpayers' money when we have obvious cause of death? That's why we're trained as death investigators."

An autopsy costs the county roughly $1500.

CLEAR CAUSE OF DEATH

During the weeks following her best friend's death, Gustafson could hardly eat or sleep. She had too many unanswered questions about Haberthier's death. Three months later, she still seeks closure.

"It's haunted me, because I was 100 feet from him and I could have hiked back up," she said. "These are the questions as friends that we just don't understand. He was such a good skier, and I've seen the guy get out of some hairy situations, so can't imagine him hitting a tree. It just doesn't make sense to me."

Harry and Lynda Taylor, who lost their 27-year-old son, Jay, in a ski accident at Keystone Resort almost exactly a year before Haberthier died, said the experience with those who handled his body, including the county coroner's office, couldn't have been worse. They said they received few answers to inquiries about his death, were actively discouraged by Wood's then-deputy coroner from having an autopsy, and Jay's preference of organ donation was overlooked. They assumed they were dealing with personnel with medical backgrounds.

"Because how often do you deal with a coroner?" asked Lynda. "And that's the sham of it all, with a skeleton in their office, and all the posters and other photos. You ask medical questions, and come to realize they never even referred them up the chain as they might have."

Having taken the advice not to obtain an autopsy, but with so many questions about how their expert skier son may have died, the Taylors regret not getting a second opinion before having his body cremated, forever eliminating the option. The pain of not knowing doesn't go away.

Because she was not next of kin to Haberthier, Gustafson was unable to petition for an autopsy to better understand what may have ultimately killed her friend that day. When she pressed Wood after the fact because of conflicting reports she received from ski patrollers over the nature of Haberthier's injures, she was repeatedly told that blunt-force trauma had already been determined the cause.

"I want to know if he was still alive after he hit," she said. "They said for sure he died instantly, but I can tell you the following two weeks after wouldn't have been as hard if it wasn't for that unknown. Why not do an autopsy? I don't get it."

Wood explained it this way: "When I have a decedent with a crushed skull, I have a pretty clear cause of death."

In the third and final installment of this series, we'll detail what a family goes through when they lose a loved one on the slopes. We'll also explore the extremely limited legal options that exist for families seeking redress against an industry that is largely exempt from liability. Click here for Part 1.

Greys Anatomy ABC, 8 ET/PT

In an odd bit of coincidental timing, Greys offers an episode that takes place almost entirely on a plane, as Meredith and Nathan get stuck sitting next to each other on a flight. (No placing bets, please, as to whether one of them gets dragged off of it.) Along with confronting their feelings for each other, odds are good theyll also confront some in-air emergency, because this is, after all, Greys. The episode was directed by series star Chandra Wilson, whose failure to win an Emmy despite multiple nominations still strikes me as one of the TV Academy's worst errors

Scandal ABC, 9 ET/PT

Greys is followed by a special 100th episode of Scandal, which finds Olivia wondering how different life would be for everyone if she, Mellie and Cyrus hadnt rigged Fitzs election. Well, on one hand, many people would still be alive. On the other, there wouldnt be a show, or at least not this show. So chances are Scandal fans think Olivia and company made the right choice.

The Blacklist: Redemption NBC, 10 ET/PT

This poorly received Blacklist spinoff airs its season and probably series finale. The good news for those whove missed the original? Its back next week.

US claims of Syria nerve gas attack: The anatomy of a lie – World Socialist Web Site

By Patrick Martin 13 April 2017

The claims by the US government that the Syrian government carried out a chemical weapons attack on the town of Khan Sheikhun, in southern Idlib province on April 4, have been backed by a week of nonstop media propaganda, as well as uncritical support, across the official political spectrum, for the missile strike ordered by President Trump against a Syrian base.

The charges against the Syrian government are absurd and unbelievable. The campaign mounted by the Trump administration, the intelligence agencies, the Pentagon and the Democratic Party demonstrates complete contempt for the intelligence of the people, and a belief that they can lie with impunity, because nothing they say will be challenged by the servile American media.

No lie is too great. If the US intelligence agencies declared tomorrow that Putin was responsible for an outbreak of tornadoes or a hurricane striking the US Gulf Coast, by means of a secret Russian program to alter the weather, their claims would be presented as the gospel truth by NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN and Fox, while the New York Times would publish a four-page investigative report, complete with maps and charts provided by the CIA.

When a policeman shoots down a working-class youth, it takes months, sometimes years, to complete the investigation. In the case of the Syrian events, it required only minutes for the US government to affix blame and three days to carry out the punishment, firing 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at a Syrian airbase.

In analyzing a crime, there are three factors to investigate: motive, means and opportunity. In relation to the nerve gas attack on Khan Sheikhoun, neither the Russians nor the Syrians had any reason to carry out the attack. The Assad regime had nothing to gain from the use of nerve gas on a town that was not a significant military target. Moreover, carrying out such an attack would inevitably provoke US military retaliation, something that Assad, on the brink of complete victory in the protracted civil war, would hardly want to risk.

The Syrian rebels and the US government, on the contrary, had motive, means and opportunity. The rebels would view any loss of life as a small price to pay to bring about US intervention in the civil war which they were losing. They have stockpiles of nerve gas and have shown before, in the staged attack on Ghouta in 2013 which killed many more people, a willingness and ability to carry out such a provocation.

Just as importantly, the rebels and their CIA sponsors had opportunity. According to a detailed analysis of the Khan Sheikhoun attack by the respected US physicist and missile expert Theodore Postol, emeritus professor at MIT, the physical evidence strongly suggests that the delivery system for the nerve gas was a mortar shell placed on the ground, not a bomb dropped from a warplane. That means the attack was almost certainly carried out by those who controlled the ground around Khan Sheikhoun, the rebel forces linked to Al Qaeda.

Postols analysis is in reply to the four-page document issued Tuesday by the National Security Council, the White House body that coordinates US foreign and military policy, purporting to prove the Syrian governments responsibility for the alleged sarin gas attack.

The American media described the NSC document as an unusually detailed and factual account, making use of US intelligence material that was declassified for that purpose. The Washington Post said the US government was unveiling intelligence discrediting Russias attempts to shield its ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, from blame in last weeks deadly chemical attack.

The Post went on to characterize the declassified findings as part of a coordinated broadside against Russia that was supplemented by new detail of what U.S. officials believe they know about the chemical weapons strike on Khan Sheikhoun, offered by White House officials who briefed the press on the document.

The New York Times said the document contains declassified United States intelligence on the attack and a rebuttal of Moscows claim that insurgents unleashed the gas to frame the Syrian government. There were similar reports in the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, and the television and cable news networks, all of them presenting the intelligence agency accounts as unchallengeable fact.

These media reports are not only demonstrably false, they are absurd. Any serious examination of the NSC document reveals it to be a series of bare assertions without any supporting evidence.

The White House document closely resembles the assessment issued by the US intelligence communitythe 17 agencies that comprise the massive apparatus of spying, political provocation and assassination for American imperialismon alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election.

It is filled with phrases like The United States is confident We have confidence in our assessment We assess Our information indicates It is clear and so on. In other words, this is the US government speaking, trust us.

There is one reference to signals intelligence, without any elaboration. This is followed by the declaration, standard in all official statements citing information allegedly supplied by the spy agencies: We cannot publicly release all available intelligence on this attack due to the need to protect sources and methods ... Once again, trust us.

The NSC report makes the first attempt by the US government to attribute a motive to the alleged Syrian gas attack, claiming, We assess that Damascus launched this chemical attack in response to an opposition offensive in northern Hamah Province that threatened key infrastructure. Senior regime military leaders were probably involved in planning the attack.

No evidence is cited to back these bare assertions, which raise obvious questions. Why should the Syrian government suddenly resort to sarin gas in a town of no obvious military significance, when it did not use nerve gasand was never accused of doing soduring the critical battles of the past year in Aleppo? Government forces reconquered the rebel-held portions of that city, the countrys largest population and business center before the civil war, in a bloody struggle conducted without the use of chemical weapons.

Even when the forces of President Bashar al-Assad were under attack in his home province of Latakia, where the local population, from the Alawite religious minority which is his main base of support, faced the threat of extermination if the Sunni Islamists were victorious, they did not resort to chemical weapons to beat back the rebel offensive.

The New York Times sought to address this problem by citing senior White House officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the declassified intelligence report. These officials asserted that the Syrian government, under pressure from opposition forces around the country and lacking enough troops to respond, used the lethal nerve agent sarin to target rebels who were threatening government-held territory.

This account makes even less sense than the NSC report, since the alleged nerve gas attack did not target rebels who were threatening government-held territory, but civilians in a town in rebel territory, including, as media reporters and Trump administration officials have repeatedly emphasized, large numbers of women and children. In other words, the American media is simply piling lie upon lie, without even taking the time to make the new lies consistent with the old ones.

From a military standpoint, the resort to chemical weapons in Khan Sheikhoun is pointless. From a political standpoint, it is counterproductive, to say the least, for the Assad regime. For the US-backed Islamist rebels, however, such an atrocity is a political goldmine, potentially providing a pretext for US and eventually NATO intervention into a civil war that the rebels are losing badly.

The NSC document makes no attempt
to address, let alone rebut, such arguments. Its four-page document includes only one page of supposedly factual findings by the U.S. intelligence agencies, consisting of vague and unsupported assertions, and then a page disputing the claims of Putin and Assad that no gas attack occurred.

In the course of this, the NSC document cites video and eyewitness testimony about the impact of a chemical agent, as well as medical reports from Turkish doctors, but none of this evidence indicates the source of the nerve gas, if it was indeed a factor in the deaths at Khan Sheikhoun.

Criticizing Russian claims of fabrication, the NSC document declares, It is clear, however, that the Syrian opposition could not manufacture this quantity and variety of video and other reporting from both the attack site and medical facilities in Syria and Turkey while deceiving both media observers and intelligence agencies.

Why should anyone believe that the media observers and intelligence agencies were among the deceived? Far more likely that the US intelligence agencies and the media observers, particularly those employed by the New York Times, Washington Post, and other conduits for the US government, were active participants in the deception.

The CIA has ample experience in the creation of provocations and fabrication of evidence, which is then supplied to its favored press outlets to create the impression of objective reporting. Absolutely nothing that is reported on such a basis deserves the slightest credibility.

It is noteworthy that the Russian government has repeatedly called for an objective, authoritative international investigation into what happened at Khan Sheikhoun. This is in sharp contrast to the conduct of the Trump administration, which has acted as judge, jury and executioner rolled into oneclaiming to determine the facts, identify the perpetrators and carry out the punishment in a three-day period. This is the method, not of justice or the enforcement of international law, but the law of the jungle, in which the most powerful imperialist military power simply does what it wants.

There is every reason to believe that the poison gas attack on Khan Sheikhoun was staged by the CIA and its rebel stooges to force a reversal of policy by the Trump administration and pave the way for US military intervention. It follows the pattern of the last previous alleged chemical weapons attack, in August 2013, when the rebels were seeking to gain direct American support, and US Secretary of State John Kerry told them that something needed to happen. Soon after, more than a thousand people were killed by nerve gas in Ghouta, a rebel-held suburb of Damascus.

The political beneficiaries of this attack were the Syrian rebels. Seymour Hersh, one of a handful of real journalists still practicing his profession and not in jail or exile, conducted a meticulous exposure of the Ghouta attack, demonstrating that it had likely been carried out by the al-Nusra Front, the Al Qaeda affiliate in Syria, with chemical weapons supplied by Turkey. The al-Nusra Front, under a new name, is the dominant force on the ground today in Khan Sheikhoun.

The Ghouta attack did not have the expected effect. After the British parliament voted against joining an attack on Syria, and in view of sharp divisions within the Pentagon over whether to intervene, President Obama pulled back, to the enormous frustration of the CIA, and of leading Democrats like his former secretary of state, Hillary Clinton.

If Clinton had won the 2016 presidential election, there is no doubt there would have been an immediate and dramatic escalation in the American involvement in the Syrian civil war. Following Trumps surprise victory, a ferocious conflict has ensued, centering on bogus allegations of Russian manipulation of the election to assist Trump, aimed at shifting the Trump administrations policy towards Russia and Syria.

This has now culminated in the apparent victory of the US intelligence agencies and the Democrats in this internecine struggle within the US ruling elite, and Trumps embarking on a course that threatens to produce full-scale US military intervention in the Syrian civil war, and poses the danger of direct confrontation with a nuclear-armed Russia.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Alum Katherine Heigl Shows Off Dramatic New ‘Do on Instagram – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Katherine Heigl portrayed Dr. Isobel (Izzie) Stevens on the hit series Greys Anatomy for almost six seasons, abruptly exiting the show in 2010. The actress moved on to other acting projects in films such as 27 Dresses, The Big Wedding, and Unforgettable. The former Greys star has also appeared on several TV shows since her departure including State of Affairs, Suits, and Doubt.

Despite these numerous credits, diehard fans of the ABC medical drama will always think of her as the intelligent, kind-hearted Izzie with the trademark mane of blonde hair, though now shes sporting a much different look.

Before the Season 16 premiere, Greys Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff began floating hints of the return of a show alum, yet didnt give any specifics. Im trying to get someone back, she said, according to IMDb. Theres someone Im hoping will make an appearance this year, [but] its a real maybe. Im trying.

Naturally, fans weighed in on who the former cast member could be with guesses including Sarah Drew (April Kempner), Sara Ramirez (Callie Torres), and Sandra Oh, who played the legendary Cristina Yang. When Heigl was promoting the final season of Suits last year, she was asked if she would consider going back to do rounds at Grey Sloan Memorial.

Thats a tough one. I dont know, she said in July, as reported by Cinemablend. I almost feel like that would almost be distracting again to, sort of, what theyve done with that show in the seven years since I left, you know, and what thats become and what it is to the fans now. It must feel like it would just be kind of like, Yeah, we already let that go, you know? Why are you here?'

In September, Heigl posted a pic of herself showing off a sharply different hair color from her traditional blonde to dark brunette for her role of Tully Hart in the upcoming Netflix seriesFireflyLane, according to People.

If you havent caught my stories this will be a shock for you #tullyhart #FireflyLane #nextroleforthisgal, she captionedthe photoat the time, referring to her previous Instagram Story posts revealing the color-change process.

The series, set in the mid-1970s, is based on the book by Kristin Hannah that follows the relationship between central characters Kate Mularkey (played by Sarah Chalke) and Tully Hart (Heigl) that spans three decades. The release date for Firefly Lane has yet to be confirmed.

Earlier this week, Heigl was back on Instagramrevealing that her entire family had gotten new haircuts. While the actress and her 3-year-old son were willing to pose for the pic to debut their new dos, her daughtersAdalaide Marie Hope, 7, andNaleigh Mi-Eun, 11, were not.

Fresh cuts for the Kelleys, Heigl captioned a slideshow of several photos where she shows off a fresh new bob. The girls were nowhere to be found for these picsor theyre hiding cause they dont want to be in the picbut every one of us got our hairs done and we feel fine!

Heigl, who shares her three kids with husband Josh Kelley, added a note on the post that her daughters may want to keep in mind. PS. I will capture the girls cuts one way or another, the Firefly Lane star wrote. they cant hide forever.

The former Greys star proves in her pics that she can pull of any hairstyle!

Dear ABC: Weve Had Enough with the Greys Anatomy-Station 19 Crossovers – PRIMETIMER

Debbie Allen, Jesse Williams, and Barrett Doss (ABC)

Things have been very busy at Grey's Anatomy's Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, what with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) getting out of jail, Bailey (Chandra Wilson) dealing with her miscarriage, Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) pregnant and unsure who the father of her baby is, and Owen (Kevin McKidd) clashing so hard with Tom Koracick (Greg Germann) that he left to go work at rival hospital PacNorth. Oh, and the chief of surgery at PacNorth, day-one Grey's character Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) has flown the coop, leaving countless storylines in the lurch.

And yet, for whatever reason, a decent chunk of the last several episodes have been occupied by some previously unseen firefighters. Of course, it's not for whatever reason: ABC has been trying to goose the second-season ratings of sister series Station 19.It started in Januarywith a two-part disaster event that brought the S19 and Grey's casts together, which is par for the course a single crossover event is pretty standard issue for shows like these, which share a universe and a city and even a few characters. But like houseguests who overstaytheir welcome, the Station 19 crossovers haven't stopped. Grey's doc Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) began dating Station 19's Vic (Barrett Doss) and making out with her in various corners of the hospital. Cases have been kicking off on Station 19 and wrapping up on Grey's, like last week's bear attack drama and tonight's Seattle blizzard.

But nothing was more frustrating than a couple weeks ago, during the pivotal episode in which Richard (James Pickens Jr.) and Catherine (Debbie Allen) are hosting a dinner, teetering on the edge of making their separation public (and official), a decision which will likely shape the rest of the whole season, and we've got not one but TWO Station 19 duds taking up space (and storylines) at the dinner table.

Look, I don't begrudge a spinoff's attempt to draft off of the success of its original. Private Practice spun off from Grey's in 2007 and certainly made use of the crossover potential of characters like Amelia Shepherd and Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh). But Private Practicemanagedto stand on its own two feet, and with the constant crossovers, the implication is that Station 19 can't do that.

The bigger problem is that Grey's Anatomy truly can't spare the real estate. For a show in its 16th season to have managed to stayfresh and successful is no accident. It's a matter of building up new characters and smartly filling its time with stories that slow-burn their way into becoming unmissable. Grey's Anatomy in its teens is a war of attrition. Battling through a network-length season, the show endures dips and highs, butviewers are loyal enough to stay until the season's storylines bubble over into a boil. That's what's currently going down with Catherine and Richard's breakup. Having these Station 19 kids around is not only an annoying waste of screen time, but they're gumming up the works and preventing audiences from investing in the show's big moments.

If Station 19 can't stand on its own, that's all the answer ABC should need. Attempting to turn Thursday nights into the Seattle version of NBC's Chicago Fire / Med / PD will only drag down the most successful drama they have.

But its also going to be a lighter, sexier season, the stars say with new faces joining the show and familiar faces coming back for more action.

The season is still weeks away, though, so our prescription for you is to click through the slides of this gallery. Just be warned: Side effects include spoilers.

Greys Anatomy Season 14 premieres on Thursday, September 28, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Tip: Use keyboard arrows to navigate

Season 14 premieres on September 28

Thats Thursday, September 28, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, to be exact.

In fact, the last time a season of Greys premiered any time other than the week of September 21-28 was Season 1.

Were getting a two-hour premiere

Twice the episode for twice the fun! Shonda knows how to treat us.

The first episode is titled Break Down the House

It was written by new showrunner Krista Vernoff, whos returning to the show for the first time since Season 7, and directed by exec producer/star Debbie Allen.

Season 14 picks up right where Season 13 left off

The docs will still be reeling from the hospital explosion and from now-departed doc Stephanies brush with death.

Theres obviously some damage to the hospital, Kelly McCreary tells Entertainment Weekly.

But it is, in true Greys Anatomy style, a completely surmountable obstacle, because we are superhuman doctors.

It serves more as a metaphor of the transformation that the show is going to go through tonally.

Season 14 wont be as dark as Season 13

Its lighter this season, Kelly McCreary continues.

The hospital definitely is undergoing some changes in the form of a new crop of students coming in.

Itll look a bit different in certain areas, and some relationships have come to an end or are blossoming, so repairing the damage is more of a metaphor.

Season 14 will introduce a spin-off

This spin-off, as of yet untitled, will focus on the firefighters of Seattle and will premiere in early 2018. (Heres everything we know about that show.)

Owens sister will be back, with a new face

Well see more of Megan Hunt now that shes been found, though shell be played by Timeless star Abigail Spencer.

(Bridget Regan, who played Megan last season, couldnt return because shes filming The Last Ship.)

Teddy Altman will be back, too

We last saw the cardiothoracic surgeon in Season 8, when Owen generously fired her so that she could pursue her dream job at MEDCOM in Germany which happens to be the army facility to which Megan Hunt, Owens sis, was transferreden route to Seattle.

Kim Raver is bringing the character back for multiple episodes in Season 14, and we imagine Teddy will help Megan in her recovery and her acclimation to Seattle.

The cast and crew have been filming in Seattle

Its the first time in a decade Greys Anatomy has filmed where its actually based instead of, yknow, a Hollywood soundstage and these exterior scenes will be interspersed throughout Season 14, Entertainment Weekly reports.

Cast members have filmed scenes on a ferry you know how much Greys loves its ferries! and at the real-life house that plays Merediths house.

Camilla Luddington promises a sexy season

Especially because the Alex-Jo-DeLuca love triangle is still a thing, as Camilla tells TV Guide:

This seasons going to be very sexy I can imagine [Jo] maybe feeling a little bit jealous if DeLuca started dating someone else.

But I think she's at a time in her life right now where she has to deal with her own emotional journey and what shes going through in her past ... before she really jumps straight into a relationship with someone else.

Theres some stuff that she has to work through.

Spoiler alert: Alex and Jo will get back together

Footage from the Seattle set shows Alex playfully chasing Jo in a park, and once he catches up to her, they embrace and kiss.

Paul Stadler, Jos abusive ex, will be back

Alex and Jo better watch out!

Glee alum Matthew Morrison said hell be reprising his Greys role.

I have a big role in Greys Anatomy coming up, he told The Argonaut in an interview published on August 2.

Jo is advancing in her career

We will absolutely explore Jos story more, Camilla Luddington told TVLine.

In fact, Camilla heard rumblings that Jo will take her board examinations and find another mentor.

This season Jo may feel inspired by someone again, she says.

Well meet DeLucas sister, another medical professional

We are bringing my sister [in] as a new character, Giacomo Gianniotti told ETOnline.

She is going to be a new presence at the hospital. She comes from Italy, as my character is Italian, and you get to see us exchanging some blows in Italian, which will be very interesting

Her profession, although we cant disclose it, is a very interesting one. Its going to keep a lot of the doctors on their toes, make some doctors uncomfortable, [and] some people will be glad about [her coming on]. Shell stir things up with a European background and take on medicine.

Carina DeLuca will be played by Stefania Spampinato

The 35-year-old actress and dancer is Sicilian and had a two-episode arc on USAs Satisfaction in 2015.

Eliza Minnick wont be back

Were one step closer to a Calzona reunion, people!

Eliza, the education consultant that wooed Arizona, was fired in the Season 13 finale, and TVLine confirms that Marika Domiczyk wont be returning for Season 14.

Whats the prognosis for Greys Anatomy Season 14? Drama, of course.

But its also going to be a lighter, sexier season, the stars say with new faces joining the show and familiar faces coming back for more action.

The season is still weeks away, though, so our prescription for you is to click through the slides of this gallery. Just be warned: Side effects include spoilers.

Martin Scorsese Finds Tension in Glances in The Irishman – The New York Times

Im Martin Scorsese. And I made the movie, The Irishman. It is an honor for me to be here tonight to present this award to my dear friend, Mr. Frank Sheeran. Were talking about a sequence that takes place in the Latin Casino. You have this wonderful reception for Frank Sheeran, who, really, its a highlight of his life. All the representatives of the power structure of that part of the country are there to celebrate him, supposedly. And it really is obviously its for the union, its for Hoffa, and its to support Hoffa over Tony Provenzano. And its to show his support for Jimmy, and Jimmys support for Frank. [APPLAUSE] The highlight of my life. Thank you very very, very much. And this man, James Riddle Hoffa, is the guy that gets the job done. Underlying all that, you have the darker elements, which are the men who are in real control of the situation. Any case, from the deepest part of my heart, I thank you all. Because I dont really deserve all this. But I have bursitis, and I dont deserve that, either. The structure of the scene is all about the looks. The dialogue doesnt matter until you have this extraordinary moment, I think, between Russell and Frank, where Russell gives Frank this special ring that only three people have. And so for me, the playing of the scene had to be weaving all the sense of a celebration, so to speak, or family gathering, weaving all that around these beats, all strung together by the music: Jerry Vale. (SINGING) Please It has a very melodramatic tragedy to it. You know, a sweetness and a sadness at the same time. (SINGING) Say you and your Spanish eyes Its like you go to an event, and there are factions. There are factions. And one faction may be polite, but theyre not going to be smiling too much. But theyre there. During that time, certain things are said. Looks are given, which are harder than words. But the main looks Anna Paquin. A whole sequence revolves around Annas Peggy, that is picking up of the subtext of whats going on. There is trouble happening. There are problems. And she knows I mean, particularly even Anna Paquin said, when she did the dancing shot, and she looks over, and shes says, I never saw looks like that from people. She said it chilled her as a person. Only three people in the world have one of these, and only one of them is Irish. I have one, Angelo has one, and now you have one. So really its about the balancing and the editing of the frames, which encompass medium shots hardly any close-ups. Usually medium to medium close-up, like right below the shoulders up. That entails seeing a little more of the body language rather than giant close-ups. The reason for that is the atmosphere and the environment around them has to be present in the frame, because that affects them. And there you see them in that environment and that atmosphere. If its too close, I think you objectify it in a way. You push the audience away. But one of the hardest things to do was to get them in the frame in the wide shot, looking down, as Jerry Vale is singing in the background. Theyre like the gods overlooking this world that they created in a way. Theres one shot from their point of view, with a long lens of Jimmy walking around and suddenly saying hello to Angelo Russo, played by Harvey Keitel. The reason is a personal reason. And that was that Harvey Keitel and Al Pacino were never in the same frame together in any movie. Things have gotten that with our friend again. And some people are having serious problems with him. And its at a point where youre going to have to talk to him and tell him its what it is. Once I settled on the size of the frame and the size of the people in the frame, I know that, then, it was really myself and my editor, Thelma, in the editing room, playing with the dialogue and playing with the looks and the pauses the pauses and the silences. These are the higher-ups. Well, hes a higher-up, too. I mean, theres no one Not like this. You know that. Oh, come on, Frank. If they can whack a president, they can whack a president of the union. You know it, and I know it.

Augmented reality turns live volunteers into anatomy lessons – Futurity – Futurity: Research News

A new augmented reality system lets physiotherapy students see inside the human body by projecting different layers of muscles and bones over the top of a volunteer patient.

The technology, called the Augmented Studio, is designed to enhance the teaching of physiotherapy, in whichstudents currently use their knowledge of anatomy to understand how muscles work beneath the skin of patients they cant see into. But the Augmented Studio bridges the gap between that theory and practice.

By using tracking sensors mounted on a scaffold it projects images of our muscles and skeleton directly onto a volunteer. The images automatically follow the shape and movement of the body, giving students in the studio space an interactive all-round view of how our bodies work. It can even allow them and their teachers to draw on the projected image to make information and action more explicit.

What we are doing is overlaying virtual models of what we look like underneath our skin and synchronizing that with real human action, says Thuong Hoang, a research fellow at the Microsoft Research Centre for Social Natural Users Interfaces at the University of Melbourne.

The Augmented Studio was built by Hoang, computer engineer Zaher Joukhadar, and doctoral student Martin Reinoso, who adapted Microsofts Kinect body sensing and tracking device as well as RoomAlive projection technology; both of which were originally designed for computer gaming.

Once a person steps into the projection space and forms a T-shape with their arms outstretched, the trackers lock on to them and the projected image conforms to their shape and movement.

At the moment the projected overlay doesnt show how our muscles actually move when we contract and relax our muscles. Instead, it tracks the body and movement at the joints. But eventually Hoang wants to add in animation that can show the actual movement of muscles as the model moves.

Physiotherapy lecturer David Kelly says the students quickly embraced the technology during pilot sessions in 2016, which are continuing in 2017. He says the combination of live movement and interaction, in which students could actually move and feel the models limbs, helps them to grasp the relationship between their learned anatomy and how it works dynamically.

For first year students it can be really hard to bring together anatomical knowledge with how the body actually works because it can be difficult to visualize. But when they see a real person who they can interact with, while also seeing the muscles and skeleton projected over the top, combined with the ability to draw and write on the body, it all becomes much easier for the students to learn about how the body moves, says Kelly, from the universitys School of Health Sciences.

The Augmented Studio also provides a more visual and intuitive way of learning that Kelly says will benefit those students who naturally learn more easily by direct visualization, rather than through reading and listening.

There has always been a group of students that struggle because the limited ways in which we have to teach may not conform to how they learn best, he says.

Developments in AR, which seeks to use technology to enhance what we can already see, hear, and feel in the real world, are far ahead of chasing GPS-tracked Pokmon. There are viewing devices such as glasses that can overlay what we see with three-dimensional graphics, video, and holograms, and we can generate projections like games that people manipulate by moving our hands.

The big advantage of the Augmented Studio over advances like 3D holograms is that the students can actually touch and move the body, making it a much more interactive experience. They also dont have to wear headgear, which means it could potentially be used in bigger settings with larger numbers of students.

It has always been hard to capture the dynamic side of how our anatomy works, so the difference here is the high level of interaction you can achieve. The student can, for example, ask the model to kick and they can then look at variations from different angles at what is happening as someone kicks, Kelly says.

The Augmented Studio is still in early-stage development and Kelly would love to see it migrate to using muscle animations. Hoang is also working to develop a system for the student interaction with the model to be automatically recorded onto their tablets so they can have a permanent record of what they were learning.

Another challenge is to find a way to make the studio more transportable and quicker to set up. At the moment the studio can work very effectively in a dedicated tutorial space where it could be permanently set up, but Kelly says a more portable set up would increase its flexibility for teaching.

Hoang is now working on extending the tracked projection technology to various health and fitness areas, and even in performance art. He says that using tracking sensors with projections it is possible to create guides that show people how to position their bodies for practicing fitness, sport, and dance.

Using virtual reality headsets he and doctoral student Martin Reinoso have already developed a prototype that allows a martial arts teacher to remotely instruct students on the right position to hold. By using body tracking and linked headsets student can match their movement to align with those of their teacher.

There is also scope to project information on our own bodys performance, such as heart rate and breathing, so it is visible either on our projected selves or on a nearby surface.

The innovation we have created isnt just limited to the fixed information that we have been projecting so far. If can be used to project dynamic information onto yourself or any surface around you, Hoang says. All of what Im dreaming of is very possible.
