‘Grey’s Anatomy’s Jessica Capshaw Celebrates Her Guest Return to the Series – Collider

The Big Picture

Fans of Grey's Anatomy already knew from the Season 20 trailer that Jessica Capshaw would make an anticipated return as Arizona Robbins after a six-season absence. Now, thanks to The Wrap, we get to hear from Capshaw herself what it felt like to walk across the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital corridors and catwalk once again, as well as what she can reveal about the current season.

During the interview, Capshaw revealed that even though she's been away from quite a while, stepping back into Arizona's shoes was a "seamless experience" and that it "was just fun." She celebrated the fact that, even though she's only back as a guest star for one episode, she got to hang out with old friends and that she screamed with excitement at the sight of several of them. But she also revealed what's the point of Arizona returning now, so late into the game:

The mission was very clear for Arizona to come back at this time where everyones a little bit world-weary and missing the magic and joy of healing and bring back some of that joy and levity. Hearing the reactions from viewers feeling so excited to reconnect with her made my heart grow a size for sure.

All the way back in Season 5 when Arizona was introduced, the character was a source of constant joy among doctors, and this was helped by the fact that she was a Pediatrics surgeon who worked with kids all day long. Capshaw also revealed to The Wrap that her return was orchestrated by new showrunner Meg Marinis who might have planned all kinds of surprises for the show's landmark 20th run. Even though Marinis only now has taken over showrunning duties, she's been a writer on the series for 18 years.

Recently, Marinis also broke down at what capacity fans can expect to see title character Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) back in Season 20. Pompeo officially left the series in 2022, but she still serves as narrator for most of the episodes. To The Wrap, Capshaw ended her interview by revealing that, just like fans, she isn't oblivious to the several changes in character dynamics that happened across the show's run. Capshaw stated that she has "tremendous and deep respect for all the changes" that the Grey's Anatomy team did throughout the seasons, and that she feels like the medical series is a house where there's room for everyone and having the best time while there is mandatory.

ABC airs new episodes of Grey's Anatomy on Thursday nights. You can also stream new episodes on Hulu.

A drama centered on the personal and professional lives of five surgical interns and their supervisors.

Anatomy of a Fall rode a debatable mystery to the 2024 Oscars – Polygon

These days, a water cooler conversation can flare up and burn out in days. Its rare to see any movie or TV show still spark any kind of unifying online discussion more than a week after its debut on a new platform, or after the final episode airs. For every Barbie or Oppenheimer or Barbenheimer, where critics, fans, reactors, streamers, podcasters, and others keep talking about the project for months after its debut, there are dozens of Netflix shows where the conversation stops after release weekend, or would-be blockbusters that make some money at the box office, but that viewers seem to have forgotten before the final credit rolls.

One of the more surprising recent movies to beat the too-much-competition-for-attention curse (or is it the short-attention-span curse?) was Justine Triets Anatomy of a Fall, a two-and-a-half-hour French drama about the fallout of a troubled relationship that ends with a literal fall. Anatomy of a Fall wasnt a Barbie-sized box office blowout, or the kind of short-term cultural fad that sparks Saturday Night Live sketches or endless online memes. After its French debut in August 2023, it opened in just five theaters in America, and at its largest nationwide expansion, it was still in fewer than 600 theaters. Oscar season may change that, but up until now, Triets latest has been firmly on the arthouse circuit.

And yet Anatomy of a Fall wound up lingering in those theaters for more than three months, as word of mouth spread and a steady trickle of people saw it and recommended it to their friends, followers, or audiences. It was endlessly discussed and picked apart, with different theories about the movies central mysteries. And it wound up on hundreds of critics top 10 lists for 2023 and won dozens of minor industry awards, along with the prestigious Palme dOr at the Cannes Film Festival, where it first premiered.

Why has the film lingered so long and had such an impact in an environment where filmgoers keep complaining about longer movies and the focus of cultural conversation normally shifts rapidly away from any release shortly after its debut? There are a few reasons, all of which together add up to a potent conversation.

The movies biggest secret selling point is the endless questions it leaves behind. (Secret in the sense that this aspect of the movie would be hard to advertise in a way that sounds appealing instead of frustrating.) The movie is designed around mysteries that are never really solved, but are layered to give viewers plenty of ammunition for any argument they want to make. More significantly, the film supports a level of nuance and meaning to those arguments that goes beyond basic Whodunit-level discussions, and into much bigger questions about what writer-director Triet and her screenwriting partner (and real-world partner) Arthur Harari are ultimately saying.

Sandra Hller stars as the films central figure, Sandra Voyter, a famous German novelist on a lengthy creative retreat with her husband Samuel (Samuel Theis) and their blind 11-year-old son Daniel (Milo Machado Graner) in a remote chalet in the French Alps. Early in the film, Samuel falls out of a third-story window of the chalet and dies. While the film is billed as a thriller (and got plenty of press suggesting it was a Hitchcock-inspired murder mystery), it doesnt operate at a thrillers pacing or with a thrillers tension: Triet builds the narrative slowly, letting viewers learn more and more about Sandra and Samuels relationship via other peoples reporting on it particularly when shes accused of his murder, and ends up in French court, defending herself.

Did she kill him? While an outsider might look at the facts of the case and believe she had ample motive for murder, how does she really feel about her relationship with Samuel? More importantly, does her son Daniel truly believe her version of the story? And how do his choices in the film reflect what he believes? These arent simple questions in Anatomy of a Fall, and Triet gives viewers plenty of potentially contradictory answers in each case, as well as plenty of ways to inject their own experiences, biases, and feelings into the process of finding the answers.

Triet has said that part of the motive for the movie was looking at the way courts can be more interested in creating narratives than revealing truths. When Sandra is on trial, much of the courtroom action revolves around different characters spinning up elaborate, detailed stories about how they think her marriage worked, and what particular moments or choices meant to her. Her own explanations for these same moments or choices are dismissed as self-serving or deceptive and she certainly doesnt help her case when she does lie about certain things.

Most centrally, an oily, notably misogynistic prosecutor (or, in French terms, advocate general), played to bristling perfection by Antoine Reinartz, makes a sumptuous public meal out of a recording of Sandra and Samuel fighting a recording that has its own prominent ambiguities. That prosecutor is openly the villain of the piece, but when he catches Sandra out about places where she deliberately shaded or hid the truth, he scores some victories on the audiences behalf, uncovering things they want to know in order to understand Sandra better, and to unravel her complex situation.

One of the reasons Anatomy of a Fall has proved so discussable, so indelible, is that it isnt really about discovering whether Sandra pushed Samuel out of that window. Its more about considering how impossible it is for any outsider to understand what goes on in any close, private relationship, whether its a marriage, or the link between parent and child, between siblings, or between anyone else whos had time and space to develop an intimate connection that shuts other people out. Relationships tend to have their own language, literally as well as figuratively, and Triet illustrates how the neat, pat narratives we all understand like He was abusive, so she killed him, or She stole his creative ideas, so he shut her out are rarely nuanced enough to apply to real relationships.

Thats a heady concept for a courtroom drama or a relationship thriller, both of which tend to have their own pat narrative expectations. Which is another reason Anatomy of a Fall has spawned so much cultural conversation: Its an unusual, ambitious, complicated project, which tends to keep a movie from becoming a populist hit, but often guarantees a film traction specifically with the kind of audiences who like to think about and discuss movies, from critics and awards bodies to fans of well-made arthouse cinema.

Then there are the central performances. Hller was also a critical favorite in year-end awards for her portrayal of Sandra, a complicated woman whos sympathetic more often than repellent, but is enough of both to keep viewers guessing and debating. Hllers bafflement at how the court and the public see her relationship, and her naked hunger for Daniels trust and support, are both palpable drivers throughout the movie. Its easy to feel for her when Daniel pushes her away, or when the prosecutor comes at her with yet another malicious, contemptuous barb. But its also easy to feel small seeds of doubt uncoiling in your stomach when the court reveals places where she twisted the truth, or when listening to how other people in the movie see or interpret her.

Graner, for his part, offers a compelling, convincing performance as a self-possessed, independent child burdened with more information and responsibility than he wants. The nuance and mystery Triet wants to
dominate the movie wouldnt work without these two performances and their interplay. Her script is richly detailed and complicated and her direction is confident and compelling, but so much of Anatomy of a Fall builds on Hller and Graners interplay, and how viewers sympathies are meant to shift with each new revelation and all the new questions those revelations suggest.

But above all, a clear reason Anatomy of a Fall has provoked so many analytical essays and videos is because its such a satisfying topic. Like the top at the end of Inception, like the plane at the end of John Sayles Limbo, like the shoe and the other big questions of Jordan Peeles Nope, the question of Sandras guilt is meant as a kind of Rorschach blot. Viewers may see more of themselves reflected in the movies central questions than they like or they might just see it as a logic puzzle, where each new piece of evidence for a given take on the story might be the one that finally convinces everyone.

Triet and Harari dont tip their hands, and dont offer easy answers. This isnt a mystery story about an all-knowing sleuth who sees through everyone, its a story about how unknowable people really are, and how hard other people work to convince themselves otherwise. The film tells a compelling story particularly well: If it didnt, all that ambiguity might just be frustrating. But its also beautifully crafted as a conversation piece, and the kinds of viewers who enjoy debating movies keep finding it and keeping that conversation going.

For all the buzz around Anatomy of a Fall, and for all its lengthy theatrical run, it was still a small movie at the box office, earning a reported $23 million worldwide. But for an arthouse drama, thats still a notable take, above some of the years other most buzzed-about theatrical dramas. And its digital availability rentable on Amazon and Vudu, among the usual online retailers will guarantee that people will keep finding it and talking about it. Maybe itll win an Oscar, maybe it wont. But its already won its battle for recognition and attention in a crowded and competitive space. Maybe more than any other movie in 2023, it impressed the people who saw it, and kept them talking long after other movies of its vintage had peaked, passed, and been forgotten.

Grey’s Anatomy future revealed after season 20 – Digital Spy

Grey's Anatomy has been officially renewed by ABC.

The network announced on Tuesday (April 2) that it has picked up a 21st season of the medical drama, with Deadline reporting it's likely to have 18 episodes.

Fans will be thrilled about the renewal, as well as the news that there will be a major increase from only 10 episodes in season 20 due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Grey's has gone through major changes these past few seasons, with Meg Marinis taking over for long-time showrunner Krista Vernoff and Ellen Pompeo only making guest appearances on screen.

Series creator Shonda Rhimes announced the season 21 renewal: "The loyalty and love of Greys Anatomy fans has propelled us into a historic 21st season, and I could not be more grateful.

"Meg Marinis storytelling is a gift that continues to keep the show vibrant, compelling and alive, and I cant wait to see what she has in store for next season.

Deadline has reported that producers will begin trying to sign up the veteran cast to new contracts because many of their deals are up after season 20. The list includes original cast members Chandra Wilson (Dr Bailey) and James Pickens Jr (Dr Webber), plus Kevin McKidd (Dr Hunt), Kim Raver (Dr Altman), Camilla Luddington (Dr Wilson) and Caterina Scorsone (Dr Shepherd).

Showrunner Meg Marinis recently suggested that it was likely that Grey's Anatomy would continue beyond its current season.

"I've not been informed that this is the last season, so I'm going to keep going and telling stories as long as they let me. We still have stories to tell," she told Deadline.

"We receive a tremendous amount of support from the studio and the network and from Shondaland. So I'm going to keep going until they tell me to put that pen down."

While Grey's Anatomy will definitely be continuing, spin-off series Station 19 will be coming to an end later this year after seven seasons.

Grey's Anatomy season 20 and Station 19's final season are airing on ABC in the US. Both shows stream on Disney+ in the UK.

Anatomy of a buzzer-beater: Fairfield’s Kam Sanders does it again – WCPO 9 Cincinnati

FAIRFIELD, Ohio On Tuesday night, Fairfields boys basketball team was trailing Middletown by a point.

It was 56-55 with four seconds on the clock.

Lucas Davids prepared to inbound the ball for Fairfield on their final possession of the night the full court ahead of him.

There was little doubt who would be taking the last shot of the night.

Junior guard, Kameron Sanders is a top-5 scorer in the Greater Miami Conference this season, and already has a history of game-winning shots.

Last season, Sanders drained a buzzer-beater on the road at Lakota West, to break a tie game and lift Fairfield to victory.

Sure enough, Davids passed the ball to Sanders, who dribbled it up the sideline, past one defender, and across the midcourt stripe.

Middletown had a foul to give, and Fairfield had a timeout to take but both teams allowed the final possession play-out.

I had to speed-dribble fast, recalled Sanders. I knew I had to get down the court.

Sanders considered passing to a teammate, but the clock was ticking.

Dave (Daviawne Crim) was wide open. But there was 1.4 seconds left. So I knew this had to go up, and I had to make it, said Sanders.

Sanders stopped his feet, and pulled-up from beyond what would be beyond NBA range.

With the running shot, people would say thats luck, said Sanders. That was going in from the start.

Sure enough, the ball deflected off the backboard, and fell through the net as the buzzer sounded.

Everybody rushed me, said Sanders.

After his buzzer-beater at Lakota West last year, Sanders got knocked-down before his team piled-on in celebration.

My one objective was not to get knocked down, and stay on my feet, laughed Sanders.

His prior buzzer-beating experience paid off. Sanders stayed on his feet by leaning against the railing at the front of the bleachers, as his teammates ambushed him.

When asked if he called bank as he shot the ball (a well-known phrase and custom in basketball) Sanders said, "No, I didn't call bank. But the bank was open, so I'll take it."

So what's the secret? If anyone understands the anatomy of a buzzer-beater, Sanders does, by now.

"It's being prepared for the moment; being able to take the shot. Live with the results the miss or make and having a coach that trusts you," said Sanders.

His teammate, Crim who was wide-open on the play was one of the first players to storm across the court and celebrate with Sanders.

That just shows what kind of team we have. Everybody rushing over, coach is happy. It doesnt get better than that.

With the win, Fairfield improved to 5-5 in GMC play; just two games out of second place in the conference.

Sanders is a junior with several division one college basketball scholarship offers, and plans to study engineering in college.

He's already got a knack for engineering some epic finishes to high school basketball games.

Is Anatomy Of A Fall Based On A True Story? – Screen Rant

Summary

The structure, details, and unravelling narrative of Anatomy of a Fall all point to the possibility that the Oscar-nominated film is based on a true story. Directed by Justine Triet, Anatomy of a Fall tells the story of Sandra Voyter (Sandra Hller), a German writer living in France who is accused of murdering her husband, Samuel, after he falls out of a window and is found dead by their blind son, Daniel. The courtroom drama follows Sandra's trial, as new details of the case are gradually revealed and certain narratives are spun to make a case.

As a whole, Anatomy of a Fall is reminiscent of a true-crime case. The film is critical of how the legal system uses selective facts to construct narratives and create fictionalized versions of real people's lives. The blurred lines between reality and fiction are a core theme of Anatomy of a Fall, which adds an intriguing layer to the question of the story's origins. The courtroom setting, reminiscence of true crime, and ambiguity of Anatomy of a Fall's ending all contribute to the illusion that the film could be based on a true story.

Despite its semblance of the true crime genre, Anatomy of a Fall is not based on a true story. The plot was an original idea constructed by Triet alongside her partner, Arthur Harari, with whom she co-wrote the screenplay. Triet and Harari's brilliant writing of Anatomy of a Fall earned them an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay at the 2024 Oscars. Triet is also nominated for Best Director, becoming only the eighth female director nominated for the Best Director Oscar in history.

The plot of Anatomy of a Fall may not have been derived from true events, but the essence of the film is still rooted in real-life cases. Triet revealed that Anatomy of a Fall was heavily influenced by the true-crime stories she read "on an almost daily basis" (via The Hollywood Reporter). Triet was also inspired by trial-centered movies and shows and "always thought [she]'d do a film with a trial at the heart of the story" one day.

While true crime and courtroom dramas inspired the basic premise of the film, Hller actually inspired the creation of her character in Anatomy of a Fall and the film as a whole. After first seeing Hller act in Maren Ade's 2016 film Toni Erdmann, Triet told THR she was "so impressed" by her as an actress that she decided to cast Hller in her 2019 film, Sibyl. Triet "immediately connected to the relationship that [Hller] has to her acting," and was inspired by her "artistic approach" and "deep commitment, even physically, to what she does."

During the shooting of Sibyl, Triet decided to create a role specifically for Hller to play. As she began conceptualizing what would eventually become Anatomy of a Fall, the French director realized she'd have to figure out how to navigate the "question of language" presented by the German actress' native tongue. Ultimately, Triet decided to embrace the conflict that Hller's language barrier presented by incorporating it into the plot and making it a crucial element of the story. Without Hller, Anatomy of a Fall would never have existed.

Toad vs. Frog: Differences in Anatomy, Habitat and More – Animals | HowStuffWorks

At first glance, toads and frogs appear similar, but a closer look reveals they differ significantly in the following areas.

Toads have dry, bumpy skin, whereas frogs have generally smooth or slimy skin. The uneven, warty texture helps protect a toad from dehydration and also serves as camouflage. Some toads even have glands on their skin that secrete toxins as self-defense.

In contrast, frogs' smooth, moist skin helps them thrive both in the water and on dry land. One benefit to having such smooth skin is it makes it easier to absorb oxygen over their entire surface area, helping them adapt to life in and around bodies of water.

Frogs have long hind legs, specifically designed for leaping and swimming, while toads tend to have stubby, short hind legs better suited for navigating short distances on land. With their characteristic hopping movements, frogs can cover significant distances and make it look effortless.

Toads, on the other hand, require just short hops since they generally need to cover less ground.

Toads' eyes bulge more than frogs' eyes do. This makes sense, given that toads need to be better at spotting prey on land. With eyes that sit higher on their heads, they gain the ability to survey their surroundings more efficiently.

Frogs, with their sleeker and slightly more recessed eyes, are better suited for a dual existence on land and in the water, where having a streamlined body can be a plus.

Both frogs and toads can display a range of colors; however, frogs tend to be more colorful. Toads come in browns, greens and grays. Combined with their warty texture, these earthy colors allow them to blend seamlessly into fields and forests so they can avoid predators.

Frogs may exhibit more vibrant hues, including green, yellow, orange, blue, purple and other shades. The purpose of such intense colors is twofold: to attract a mate, and to warn predators of their toxicity.

‘Anatomy of a Fall’ Director Justine Triet Reacts to ‘Crazy’ Oscar Nomination – TheWrap

Eight months after scoring the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, Justine Triet is now an Oscar nominee. Her French courtroom mystery Anatomy of a Fall landed in five hot categories on Tuesday, including Best Picture, Best Director for Triet, Best Actress for Sandra Hller, Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing.

The news was greeted with joy and elation by Triet and her team, who watched the Oscar nominations live on television in Paris.

We were so, so stressed before the announcement, she told TheWrap. And then when we saw the nomination for the script, we were so happy, but then it kept continuing with the other nominations in other categories. I was crying.

The film, released by distributor Neon, has earned $4 million in North America since opening in October, but that number is destined to climb, especially in the wake of these nominations.

TheWrap caught up with Triet shortly after the announcement on Tuesday, as the filmmaker was still buzzing with excitement and gathering her thoughts about the incredible news. (Translator Assia Turquier-Zauberman assisted during the interview.)

Youre in Paris now. What has the reaction been like there? In France its totally crazy. The French people are very high right now. Not high like on drugs [laughs], but high in their mood. We were so lucky. I mean, we dont represent France [in the Best International Film category] but weve had a lot of audiences who have enjoyed the movie in France. A lot of people were so happy for us.

And ultimately, the film that France submitted, Tran Ahn Hungs The Taste of Things, did not get nominated for Best International Film. Yes, I know, but this is not a sport. I dont think this is about one movie being better than another movie. No. Of course, its not good news [for France], but weve gotten past this question, because we are nominated in a lot of categories.

How did it feel when you saw that Sandra Hller was nominated for Best Actress? Oh, my. I was so happy. Sandra is so linked to this movie, unlike anyone ever has been for one of my films. She was in my mind before we even started writing it. So of course shes totally merged into the whole creative process. She deserves it.

There are three movies directed by women nominated for Best Picture: Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, Past Lives. Thats a record. It means a lot for me. And for women. Its a little victory, in a way. I think were in the beginning of a huge revolution for women. Im 45 years old, Im not 20, so Ive seen a different world before now. A lot of things are changing, and I cant wait to observe the young generation of women because I think they will lead a different life. And hopefully it will be a different world.

But in the Best Director category, your fellow nominees are all men.Yeah, I know, this is completely crazy.

In 96 years, you are the eighth. What?! Wow. This is crazy. Somebody else told me that its very rare for women. I didnt know this. Im trying to enjoy every minute of this and it really means a lot, but thats crazy. I am a huge fan of Greta Gerwig, a huge fan for what shes doing as a director and as an actress. And I was very impressed by Celine Song [the director of Past Lives]. Im very proud to be with this gang in that [Best Picture] category.

But that said, your other nominees include Martin Scorsese and Yeah! Its not just anyone on this list. Its Martin Scorsese. Im a huge fan of Martin Scorsese, of course. Im a big fan of Yorgos Lanthimos and I love Poor Things. And Christopher Nolan, of course. And Jonathan Glazer. Its a fairy tale to be nominated with these genius directors.

How does it feel to share the screenplay nomination with your partner in life, Arthur Harari? In a way, its very beautiful to be nominated together. And wonderful to be able to share it with somebody so close to me. This movie was written by two directors. Arthur is not a screenwriter as much as a director. And so when youre in the writing process with another director, you are not speaking just about the dialogue or the story, but imagining a whole world. And so it is a marriage of two different styles and two different brains. And sometimes we didnt agree on a lot of things. But that was okay. The pandemic time was an interesting time to write this, because we were stuck and forced, in a way, to finish the script together.

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Never Should’ve Killed Off Lexie – Collider

The Big Picture

Besides being known as the longest running American medical drama, Greys Anatomy is also characterized by the carousel of characters that have come and gone. Its not a surprise at all, with such a large ensemble cast and with the show running for almost 20 years now. A common narrative device courtesy of creator Shonda Rhimes and crew to manage actors behind-the-scenes drama and contract expirations has proven to be controversial but effective: killing them off. One that still hurts and shouldve been handled differently at the time was the death of Chyler Leighs Lexie Grey.

Introduced in the Season 3 finale, Lexie was Merediths (Ellen Pompeo) half-sister. Yes, family twists are also one of Greys Anatomys staples, and Lexie was one of the earliest ones. For five seasons, we got to know who she was, with her eventually becoming a fan-favorite. When Leighs contract expired, she opted out of the show, looking to spend more time with her family. There was no foul play involved, as both her and Rhimes came up with what ultimately became her tragic end. Still, in retrospect, Leighs exit shouldve been executed in a way that wouldve allowed her to reprise her role as Lexie.

A drama centered on the personal and professional lives of five surgical interns and their supervisors.

While Season 8 is considered one of the best of Greys Anatomy, its finale proves to be a bit more divisive. In Flight, half the doctors of Seattle Grace, who were headed to Boise to assist in a surgery, are left stranded in the woods after their plane crashes. A Lost-like sequence reveals how injured everyone is, but the one in the worst place turns out to be Lexie, whose lower body is crushed by plane debris. Mark (Eric Dane), who by this point was totally devoted to Lexie, stays by her side at every moment. The most heartbreaking goodbye takes place as they visualize the life they couldve (and shouldve) had together.

Besides being unexpected, Lexies death was brutal. Seeing her as the crashs first victim turned the episode into a tragic experience. An inconsolable Meredith shows her pain throughout the whole episode, and not even Cristina (Sandra Oh) can sooth it. The devastation is only heightened when Mark succumbs to his internal injuries and also dies in the Season 9 premiere. Making matters abysmally worse, Cristina shares gruesome details when going through a PTSD episode about how the wolves in the woods didnt eat them because they were busy with Lexie.

At first seeming like a mere roadblock in Merediths way to emotional stability, Lexie became so much more and still had more to give. Her healthy upbringing clashes with Merediths darker nature. They eventually make peace and their relationship evolves into a real sisterhood. Lexies dazzling essence also affects Mark in such a way that he decides to leave his womanizer era behind and own up to his actions. By Season 8, their on-again-off-again relationship had finally reached common ground where they could finally plan a stable future together.

Although she humanizes Mark and Meredith, Lexie isnt only a plot device. She becomes her own character by growing personally and professionally. Going through a shooting (in one of the shows best episodes), the consequential PTSD, and her fathers death, end up building her up instead of bringing her down. She matures with the blows life deals her, but still remains the most goodhearted and brightest soul the hospital has seen. Her skills, like her photographic memory, prove extremely useful and earn her a promotion as a surgical resident. Those were just the early steps to seeing her grow and thrive as a surgeon. Had Lexie survived, it wouldve been totally understandable to have her leave Seattle Grace following Marks death and the door would still be open for future appearances.

Okay, yes, Lexie already returned during Season 17, while Meredith was in her middle ground between life and death. She gives one of the strongest pieces of advice when she reminds her that even with a global pandemic raging on life is worth celebrating. This is one of the greatest encores we get to see at Merediths beach, but it is still only a ghostly apparition fueled by Merediths state of mind while battling COVID. Had Lexie been alive, her returning to Seattle to look after Meredith and her recovery wouldve caused a greater impact.

Leighs reasons for exiting the show are totally understandable, but killing off Lexie removed any opportunity of having her back in the mix. Teddy (Kim Raver), Addison (Kate Walsh), and Jackson (Jesse Williams) are just some of the characters that have left the show, but have been intertwined with the story in later seasons, with their returns being earned and heartfelt. Ravers Teddy even became a series regular again after an absence of six seasons (and has perhaps overstayed her welcome). Lexie deserved an encore of this kind. With Pompeo stepping down from starring in the show, Zolas (Aniela Gumbs) education has been sped-up to apparently fit her in as some type of Doogie Howser who can still carry the Grey name. In a what-if situation, having Lexie return wouldve been the best way to sort out the fact that the show is still named Greys Anatomy.

More than a show, Greys Anatomy quickly became a rollercoaster of emotions. Each season finale turned into a whole event which had the burden of delivering something more impactful and emotional than the previous season while also making creative choices that fit with its actors decisions. Since Lexie had already cemented herself as one of Greys Anatomys essentials, her death made sense as a blow that would cripple the fanbase but would also keep the show in everyones minds. And it worked. Here we are 12 years later talking about the twist! With the show gearing up to start its 20th season on March 14, its clear the killing-off-beloved-characters formula is going nowhere. Well just have to wait and see whos next, hoping our hearts wont be torn apart once more.

All seasons of Grey's Anatomy are now available to stream on Netflix in the U.S.

‘Anatomy of a Fall’ Wins Best Film, Actress, Screenplay at France’s Lumiere Awards – Yahoo News Canada

Justine Triets Palme dOr winning Anatomy of a Fall picked up top accolades at the 29th Lumiere Awards, Frances equivalent to the Golden Globes, at a ceremony held Monday at the Forum des Images in Paris.

While Triet lost the best director nod to Thomas Cailley for his supernatural family drama The Animal Kingdom, Anatomy of a Fall won best film, actress for Sandra Huller, and screenplay for Triet and Arthur Harari. The movie is nominated for seven BAFTA awards, and won two Golden Globes (for screenplay and foreign-language film) earlier this month. While on stage to receive the best screenplay award, Triet and her partner Harari delivered the ceremonys highlight, debating whether theyre collaborate again on a project. Triet admitted that the writing process had been complicated and said, I dont think hes accept to work again with me but one time was already great.

More from Variety

Harari, an actor (The Goldman Case) and director (Onoda: 10,000 Nights in the Jungle), said he would think about it, and joked that he had recently started working on insulating the attic near a window and he wondered if it was a good idea to pursue. It reminded me how fiction can have a strange effect on reality, said Harari, referring to the plot of Anatomy of a Fall which sees the husband of Sandra Hullers character dies in an apparentfallfrom an upperwindowof their chalet.

Kicking off Frances awards season, the Lumieres are handed out by France-based foreign journalists.

Another critically acclaimed French trial movie, Cdric Kahns The Goldman Case won one prize for Arieh Worthalter as best actor, while The Rapture by Iris Kaltenbck won best first film. Kaouther Ben Hanias Oscar shortlisted Four Daughters won best documentary, while Chiara Malta and Sbastien Laudenbachs Linda Wants Chicken! nabbed best animated film.

Story continues

The ceremony took a political turn when Ben Hania tearfully called for a ceasefire in Gaza in her speech. Shortly after, Harari said he was disgusted by what the Israeli government is doing in Gaza, prompting applauses from some guests, while others shouted release the hostages. Harari then said he was also shocked by the Oct. 7 attacks (perpetrated by Hamas) but argued that the responsibility to end the war in Gaza lies with the Israeli leadership.

The French film industrys next big show, the Cesar Awards, will unveil nominations on Jan. 24.

Former Grey’s Anatomy Actor Becomes New Resident In Chicago Med Season 9 Image – Screen Rant

Summary

Chicago Med season 9 gets a brand-new image, and it teases a new character played by a Grey's Anatomy alum. Marking the third installment in the larger One Chicago franchise of shows, Chicago Med first premiered in 2015, following the Emergency Department doctors of Gaffney Chicago Medical Center as they navigate their personal and professional lives. Following the conclusion of season 8 in May of last year, the show is now gearing up for its next outing, which will include the introduction of some new cast members.

Now, following the Chicago Med season 9 premiere last week, TVLine shares an image from episode 2, "This Town Aint Big Enough for Both of Us," revealing Sophia Ali's new character, Dr. Zola Ahmad. Check out the image below:

This isn't the first time Ali has played a doctor, of course, with the actor having previously recurred on Grey's Anatomy as Dr. Dahlia Qadri. According to TVLine, Dr. Ahmad ruffles some feathers when she arrives at the hospital due to her unorthodox method of treating patients, with the episode 2 logline teasing a clash between the newcomer and Crockett (Dominic Rains).

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Chicago Med season 9, episode 1.

Ali's Dr. Ahmad isn't the first new character to appear on Chicago Med season 9, with last week's premiere having introduced Luke Michell as Dr. Mitch Ripley. Both new characters are part of a larger attempt to offset the absence of several core characters, with cast members Guy Lockard (Dr. Scott), Brian Tee (Dr. Choi), and Nick Gehlfuss (Dr. Halstead) having all departed the show with season 8.

The Chicago Med season 9 premiere jumps forward in time to several months after the season 8 finale, and the show will seemingly be sticking with this jump ahead as new episodes continue to air. The premiere hits the ground running, with Dr. Mitch Ripley's start at the hospital proving to be a rocky one. Friction forms between him and Dr. Charles (Oliver Platt) due to their troubled past, and, though tentatively resolved, this storyline seems ripe for further exploration moving forward.

Also set up in the premiere is Maggie Lockwood's (Marlyne Barrett) personal problems with Ben (Charles Malick Whitfield). Maggie reveals to Hannah (Jessy Schram) that Ben is seeking a divorce, and it's possible that these personal troubles will start to spill into the hospital. It's currently unclear whether Chicago Med season 10 will happen, but the episodes in the coming weeks will reveal whether the show can succeed moving forward without so many original cast members.

New episodes of Chicago Med are released on Wednedays at 8pm ET on NBC.

Anatomy of a Formula 1 race car – Las Vegas Weekly

SPEEDING ON THE STRIP

According to simulations, average speeds for the Grand Prix should be around 147 mph. The track layout has 17 turns and three long straights, the longest of which stretches 1.2 miles on Las Vegas Boulevard. Here, drivers could reach speeds in excess of 210 mph.

The required minimum weight of Formula 1 cars is 1,759 pounds, which includes the driver, dry-weather tires and no fuel. Even though weight is crucial to speed and efficiency, cars are heavier now than ever before due to safety features like the halo crash protection system. Some parts have minimum weight requirements, like the engine, while others do not, including the chassis.

The carbon fiber steering wheel contain dozens of buttons, dials and displays drivers use during the race, and they can all make a difference. For example, the scroll knob that can controls the brake balance ensures drivers can find the right balance for every corner, and the drag-reduction system button can open the rear wing and give a temporary 6 to 10 mph boost. Theres even a drink button to pump fluid into the drivers mouth, crucial hydration considering they lose an average of 5 to 7 pounds of water weight during a race.

A Formula 1 race car engine is called a power unit because its a hybrid of a petrol internal combustion engine and electric motors powered by an energy recovery system (ERS). Its output is around 1,000 bhp and the 1.6-litre turbo V6 engine runs at 15,000 rpm, compared to your cars highway rpm of around 2,000.

F1 cars use commercial fuel compounds and are required to use a minimum of 10% advanced sustainable ethanol. One race might require around 135 liters of fuel, or nearly 36 gallons. Teams spend around $500,000 on fuel for the season.

Las Vegas has seen Formula 1 cars in the past when the Caesars Palace Grand Prix was held in the early 1980s, but technology has come a long way since then. Audiences here and across the country are more familiar with the heavier stock cars of NASCAR races, but those are still based on the cars we all drive around. F1 cars are built from the ground up. NASCAR vehicles are also mostly based on a template, while each F1 car is built independently by the race team. Perhaps the biggest difference between the two types of cars is the engineit costs around $100,000 to build one NASCAR, where the much more complex F1 version might run up to $10 million.

The slick tires on F1 cars are made of soft compounds for maximum grip under dry conditions but are meant to last only a short time. Pirelli has supplied F1 teams with tires since 2011, changing from 13-inch to 18-inch tires in 2022 as part of widespread changes to regulations.

‘Anatomy of a Fall’ and ‘Zone of Interest’ Star Sandra Hller Explores Shades of Darkness – TheWrap

This story about Sandra Hller first appeared in theRace Begins issueof TheWrap magazine.

Justine Triet has a word for Sandra Hller, her star in the dark family drama Anatomy of a Fall, which won the Palme dOr at this years Cannes Film Festival: ungraspable.

It is a word in English that I didnt know before yesterday, she said in early October. And now I want to use it all the time, forSandra.

The word certainly applies to Hllers character in Anatomy of a Fall, in which she plays a successful writer (also named Sandra) who is accused of murdering her husband. Triet never tips her hand to reveal whether Sandra is innocent or guilty, with Hller finding a way to suggest both alternatives at the same time as the thorny film swings between a portrait of a fracturing relationship and a charged courtroom drama.

But Anatomy isnt the only powerful project that Hller is in this year; its not even the only one that premiered in Cannes in May. The German actress is also one of the leads inJonathan Glazers The Zone of Interest, a dispassionate and chilling examination of a Nazi family that lives in a bucolic house just outside the gates of Auschwitz, where the father, Rudolph Hss, is in charge of the mass extermination of Jews. Hllers Hedwig Hss is a woman who loves her lifestyle and to all appearances doesnt give a thought to whats happening on the other side of that wall. Shes hard to understand, but more than that, impossible to find sympathetic.

The two films are a study in contrasts: Anatomy urgent, talky and in-your-face, with Hllers character pleading her case through much of the action; Zone all about distances, with the camera backing off from these awful people who want to live normal lives unshadowed by their monstrous deeds. You could say that both characters are ungraspable, and Hller would probably agree but when Triet used the word, she made it clear that she applied it not to Sandra the character but to Sandra the actress.

In conversation, theres something elusive about Hller. The 45-year-old, who was born inSuhl when it was part of East Germany, is friendly but a little hesitant; shes said that she admires actors who can spin anecdotes and charm interviewers, but theres also a sense that she doesnt do that partly because English isnt her first language (German is) but also because she chooses not to.

The first time TheWrap interviewed her, at a screening of Toni Erdmann in 2016, she was enjoying a breakthrough with that Oscar-nominated film after a career that had begun on the stage and then included a string of films that didnt get much exposure outside of Europe. At that Q&A, I brought up a story that director Maren Ade had told me about how, during rehearsals for the movies uproarious naked dinner party scene, Hller opened the door nude to give a late-arriving actor a start. At the screening, Hller said she didnt know what I was talking about, that it had never happened but when I saw her again a week later, she apologized profusely and said shed misunderstood me and the story was true. When I reminded her of our earlier encounter when we met for this story, she said she didnt remember that and wouldnt have answered the door naked, but maybe she did so in her underwear.

So who is Sandra Hller? Shes gifted, private and, yes, ungraspable but shes also made a big and bold mark on cinema in 2023, when she became the first actor ever to star in Cannes Palme dOr winner (Anatomy of a Fall) and its Grand Prix winner (The Zone of Interest). She speaks three languages in those two films English and French in Anatomy and German in Zone and she also appeared at this years Berlin Film Festival as one of the stars of Sisi & I, a historical black comedy in which Hller plays 19th-century countess Irma Sztray, who became a handmaiden to Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Susanne Wolff), also known as Sisi. (The 2022 film Corsage, shot at the same time, was another revisionist and feminist film about that monarch.)

It is what it is, she said matter-of-factly of having Anatomy and Zone simultaneously stirring up awards buzz. Its a great blessing that they are both running at the same time and that I can find out so many more things about my work and what people think about it. To me, it feels like a gift.

Like many other things these days, you can thank the COVID-19 pandemic for the Hller logjam this awards season. The Zone of Interest was originally scheduled to shoot in 2020 but was delayed to 2021 because of the pandemic, giving her only six weeks off before she began shooting Sisi & Me. When that film ended, she had about three months before Anatomy of a Fall began production, though she was also taking lessons to improve her French before that film.

I like to have a lot of free time between works, she said. I like the time to settle and to reconnect with the life Im living, because shooting can be very intense. Theres a whole thing that goes on with the body hormone-wise when youre working adrenaline and dopamine and all these things that you cant live with every day or youd go crazy. I need some time to get it out of my body. A shrug. But sometimes, you cant do that.

The Holocaust movie, oddly, was both the most difficult one to do and the one that took the least out of her. I didnt feel like getting into character while working on The Zone of Interest, she said. I usually tend to be more empathetic with the characters to love them more, to give them more of my fantasies and more of myself. With Hedwig, it felt wrong to give her anything from me. So I was just watching her and doing what Jonathan told me.

She was encouraged by the way Glazer shot the film, with cameras set up in the corner of rooms in the house where the Hss family lived, and with the film crew watching from the basement rather than sharing the rooms with the actors. Jonathan just wanted to show the life of the people with death next to them, caused by them, she said. He didnt want to have any heroism, or to have actors wondering which side would be the best to show, and wheres the light and wheres my mark and all this technical stuff. The topic is so much bigger than these technical questions.

She shook her head. I would never have done the movie if it had been a biopic about the Hsses. I never wanted to be part of this world.

And even though the story is being told by a British director, Hller felt compelled to be careful with the material because of her nationality. Doing this as a German, with my ancestors being responsible for all this, is something that I cannot deny, she said. The people in my country have the responsibility to keep talking about this, even if some of them deny it. The responsibility not to make it be forgotten and not to let it happen again.

This was something that happened to the world where time really stopped. It changed the world completely. We were wondering so many times what the world would be like now if this hadnt happened. And we cant even imagine it. It had such a big impact that you cannot treat it like every other movie, and I cannot treat the character like every other character.

After finishing work on Zone, Hller used the Sisi & I shoot to wash Hedwig out of her system. Irma is the complete opposite of Hedwig, she said. Shes a very childlike, non-judgmental, kind person. I was thinking about that when I accepted both roles, that Irma would come after Hedwig and wipe her out.

Shifting to Anatomy of a Fall after Sisi, she said, was more a case of getting back to her usual way of working. Triet had written the script (with Arthur Harari) with
Hller in mind for the character of the woman who always leaves us questioning her motives and actions. I was obsessed by her, the writer-director said. I dont always know if its the best to write for an actress, but she was very (much) in our mind during the writing. Just thinking about Sandra helped us create a more realistic character.

In one way, the films biggest complication for Hller was the language: The character speaks English to her husband and son, but shes required to speak French, in which the actress is less fluent, in the courtroom. The question that dominates the film is set up in the first few scenes, when Sandras husband, Samuel (Samuel Theis), either falls, jumps or is pushed to his death from the top floor of the couples French mountain chalet. We gradually learn that Sandra has lied about certain aspects of their relationship, but we never know whether she killed him. And Hller never knew, either.

I was captivated when (Justine) sent me the script, she said. Id never read anything like this about the division of power between modern couples, and I wanted to find out if she did it. I really wanted Justines thoughts on this, but she never did tell me. But we found out quickly that it doesnt really matter. Its more about what we think of the character and about our own limits and moral boundaries. Can we deal with a woman who doesnt feel shame? It was not if she did it or not, it was the way she was treated as a human being in this trial.

On the other hand, having an answer would have given Hller a clearer idea of how to play Sandra, right? Yeah, she said. It wouldve made it so much easier for me. But I can defend this character no matter what she had or hadnt done. In the end, she gave Triet different takes to fit whatever interpretation the director wanted. And more recently, Hller even got a promise from the director: She told me two days ago that she will tell me if Sandra did it in 10 years. But not before.

By that point, Hller may well be better known in the United States: With the one-two punch of Anatomy and Zone, which are being released in the U.S. by Neon and A24, respectively, it makes sense that she may be getting interest from Hollywood. On the other hand, that shouldhave happened seven years ago after Toni Erdmann, but she said it didnt.

I dont have a crystal ball, so I really dont know if they are interested in me now, she said. Also, I dont know what kind of direction that would go. I can do some things, but there are some things I certainly cannot do like superhero stuff, I just couldnt. I would probably burst out laughing all the time.

But after emerging from the COVID shutdown with a blast of three movies and lots of Oscar buzz, does she have a sense of where she wants to go next? Have her priorities changed? Theyve changed because time has passed and Im a bit older, she said. When I was a teenager, I never had any special interests, hobbies or sports. And then my English and German teacher opened a drama club in my school when I was 14 or 15 and it was so much fun more fun than I had ever found in doing anything else. Now, COVID has shown me how fragile the system is and how fast things can just go away or be postponed. It showed me how precious it is to be able to do this.

Im curious what comes from this. But Im really, really happy that I have this experience and even if nothing happens, I cannot be disappointed. I would just go on living my life.

First-graders are studying human anatomy and tested in a new hands-on approach – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

L.L. Bean has just added a third shift at its factory in Brunswick, Maine, in an attempt to keep up with demand for its iconic boot.

Orders have quadrupled in the past few years as the boots have become more popular among a younger, more urban crowd.

The company says it saw the trend coming and tried to prepare, but orders outpaced projections. They expect to sell 450,000 pairs of boots in 2014.

People hoping to have the boots in time for Christmas are likely going to be disappointed. The bootsare back ordered through February and even March.

"I've been told it's a good problem to have but I"m disappointed that customers not getting what they want as quickly as they want," said Senior Manufacturing Manager Royce Haines.

Customers like, Mary Clifford, tried to order boots on line, but they were back ordered until January.

"I was very surprised this is what they are known for and at Christmas time you can't get them when you need them," said Clifford.

People who do have boots are trying to capitalize on the shortage and are selling them on Ebay at a much higher cost.

L.L. Bean says it has hired dozens of new boot makers, but it takes up to six months to train someone to make a boot.

The company has also spent a million dollars on new equipment to try and keep pace with demand.

Some customers are having luck at the retail stores. They have a separate inventory, and while sizes are limited, those stores have boots on the shelves.
