Your A+ in anatomy and physiology won’t improve the American health care system – Kevin MD

March 30th marks National Doctors Day a day meant to honor the immense work and impact physicians have in caring for our patients and their communities. As resident physicians, we are proud and honored to have joined this noble profession.

However, on this particular Doctors Day, we are also acutely aware that medicine isonce againat a historic crossroads. The recent waves of sweeping anti-diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) legislation threaten to undermine the critical strides our profession has made over the past decade. This begs the question: Will we stand firm in our commitment or let the meritocracy tide overtake us?

On March 19th, 2024, House Representative (3rdDistrict-North Carolina) and surgeonDr. Gregory Murphyproposed the Embracing Anti-Discrimination, Unbiased Curricula, and Advancing Truth in Education(EDUCATE) Act. The bill aims to eliminate federal funding from medical schools that continue to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion work in medicine and medical education by amending the Higher Education Act of 1965. With this bill, Congressman Murphy believes the United States medical system as a whole will become fixed by solely focusing on meritocracy when teaching and preparing the next generation of physiciansa flawed myth rooted in structural inequalities as well as centuries of racism that have robbed whole communities of resources and opportunities.

Evidence of individual exceptionalism or meritocracy falsely attributes individual success to individual effort while failing to acknowledge contributory systemic, structural, or environmental factors that make each individual unique.

This meritocratic inheritance, as described in Daniel Markovitss The Meritocracy Trap, is prevalent in medicine and used to disguise privilegethat is, being born to the right family, in the right environment, with the right connections, will lead one to find and attain the calling of being a physician.

Falling into the meritocracy trap is akin to believing the world and our lives to be a dichotomy of black and white, yes and no. As physicians, when we reflect on our own lived experiences, we know that this is simply not the case. We see the societal consequences of a meritocracy every day of our careersfrom the way some of our colleagues accomplishments have been ignored or undervalued to the numerous health disparities that continue to plague the American health care system.

Twenty years ago, the Unequal Treatment report, spearheaded by the National Institute of Health (NIH), was released to define how racial and ethnic disparities impact our health care systems costs and outcomes. This report yielded recommendations centered on increasing the number of minority health professionals, educating providers on the impact of biases in health care, and implementing initiatives centered on eliminating health disparities within hospital systems.

Now, 20 years later, despite the implementation of these recommendations, health care disparities continue to persist with harrowing consequences for minoritized and marginalized patient populations, including missed cancer diagnoses, worse pain control, and increased rates of maternal mortality.

Without providing evidence, it is easy to say that DEI initiatives are to blame when, in fact, social inequity drivers are the true culprits. Dr. Nancy Krieger, a Harvard scholar, reflected on the Unequal Treatment report, saying, Its not enough to recommend people get more exercise and eat more nutritious food if they dont have adequate green space in their neighborhood or accessible grocery stores with affordable healthy foods.

Likewise, the argument for meritocracy-centered medical education falls flat when trying to address health disparities. The lack of diversity in medical education has had ramifications in clinical medicine, including the disparate care of marginalized populationsfrom the high rate of maternal mortality among Black mothers to delayed diagnosis of cervical cancer both circumstances recently seen with Krystal Anderson andJessica Pettway, respectively.

Whether the physician was meritorious is insufficient and fails to address the crux of the problem. The harms our medical education system has inflicted on these patients are irreparable, but DEI initiatives have at least brought these issues to the forefront for our profession to try again and improve. Its been shown that physicians from racially/ethnically underrepresented groups in medicine (URiM) are more likely to serve underserved and rural communitiesthan their white counterparts.

The art and storytelling aspect of clinical medicine will always make our profession unique. However, both aspects can lead to biases that lead to the health disparities outcomes that our profession is riddled with. As Congressman Murphy noted in a prior National Doctors Day,when he highlighted the alarming physician shortage in the United States, at one point or another, everyone will need a doctor in their life. DEI initiatives aim to ensure that when that point comes, the physician taking care of you is listening, culturally sensitive, and empathic to your experiences. Now is not the time to threaten cutting funding to medical schools that are essential pipelines for the physician workforce of the near future.

As mentioned before, our profession is at a crossroads as to whether we embrace techniques that can help us solve these ever-mounting health disparities or continue to provide unequal care to certain populations. We need more than statements from our medical societies and associations to ensure DEI-centered initiatives in medicine remain in order to solve the former and fix our health care system. So, will we be swept by the tide of meritocracy, or will we hold firm to our mission and the true needs of the populations that we care for? Only time will tell.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 20 Has A Meredith & Derek Easter Egg – Bustle

Ever since Greys Anatomy debuted in 2005, the series has been known for its buzzy, eclectic soundtrack from making mainstream hits out of alternative bops, to platforming countless artists for some of the shows most emotional moments. (Sleeping At Lasts 500 Miles cover from the shows storm two-parter in Season 9? Try not to cry on your next rewatch!)

But sometimes, the simplest flourish of the shows original score is enough to get the tears flowing, like the musical Easter egg that could be heard in Season 20s Never Felt So Alone. The next Greys Anatomy episode wont be until May 2, so this is the perfect time to catch up on the MerDer homage you might have missed the first time around.

During the Season 20 episode, Meredith is upset that her son, Bailey, became ill with appendicitis while she was away from home. As she told Dr. Webber (who helped get her back to Boston with his Catherine Fox Foundation plane), the experience brought back traumatic memories of Dereks death.

Even the best hands make mistakes: bleeding, perforations, Meredith says. Its the middle of the night. Theyre tired. Mistakes happen.

Later, Meredith told Webber that she wished she had Derek to lean on in times like this. I mean, of course I miss him, she says. Its just really only when the kids wake up in the middle of the night, and I dont have anyone to talk to.

If you listen closely during the vulnerable moment, you can hear a familiar piano melody playing in the background. Its the original music, aptly nicknamed their love theme, that has been used to score Meredith and Dereks relationship since their earliest encounters. (Yes, it even plays during the iconic Pick me, choose me, love me scene.)

As it turns out, this isnt the first time MerDers theme music popped up after Dereks death. It could be heard during the couples encounter on Merediths illness-induced dream beach in Season 17, for example.

But to have those familiar notes play at a time of reflection for Meredith is especially impactful. Like real-life memories of loved ones, the song sneaks up on fans in a quiet moment a subtle reminder that no matter how much time has passed since Dereks death, he is still very much a part of Merediths (and Greys Anatomys) story.

Its also a testament to the beloved series longevity. As the longest-running primetime medical drama in history, Greys Anatomy is able to weave in nostalgic Easter eggs that feel well-earned due to the passage of time.

Kim Raver Says Tensions Will Reach a 'Boiling Point' on 'Grey's Anatomy's Season 20 Finale (Exclusive)

Kim Raveris teasing big things ahead onGrey's Anatomy.

ET spoke to the actress amid the show's 20th season, and she promised that even though the installment was shortened due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the drama is still as intense.

"This finale of season 20 just doesn't disappoint. It's another classic Grey's Anatomy," she said. "There's so many things that come to a boiling point, that sort of explode, in the finale. Even us as actors, we're like, 'Wait.'"

"[They] did just an incredible job of, in such a short season, sort of weaving all of these storylines and carrying over from the premiere to what's happening [now]," Raver added of the writers and producers. "... It's very entangled and very exciting. It's really a great finale."

Throughout the season, Raver's Dr. Teddy Altman has been recovering after a near-death experience, which the actress told ET has been "quintessential Grey's Anatomy" in that "it puts all the best things in one."

"The fact that, in her coming back [into the season] in recovery, which is very dramatic and painful, there's also some very fun comedic moments... it's a really great evolution to see and a great story to tell," Raver said. "... She's always been such a badass, so it's really fun to see her working her way back."

For Raver, it's no surprise that her character's storyline has been both layered and exciting, something she credits to the show's writers.

"I absolutely love playing Teddy. I just think she's such a multi-faceted character with such an incredible history. It's so amazing to me that the writers are finding new stories to tell with her," she said. "... I feel really lucky and grateful to be able to tell Teddy's story. As people evolve, there's stories to tell. What's great is the patients are coming in and they illuminate stories that are going on for these characters."

Given that the show's storyline evolves as new patients come into Grey Sloan Memorial makes Raver believe thatGrey's could go on indefinitely. It will at least go on one more season, asGrey'swas recently renewed for season 21.

"I think there's an incredible feeling of familiarity. With everything that's going on in the world right now, to be able to have a somewhat... expanded family and to kind of live life with these other people, I think it could go on and on," she said. "I think the core part of Grey's Anatomy is about people's lives and how these patients come in and interact with the lives of our surgeons."

"We have our moments where we shine, and we have our moments where we really fail in a way that we're all in that together, able to support one another and tell funny stories and heartbreaking stories simultaneously, is really quintessential Grey's," Raver added.

That magic speaks to fans across the globe, Raver revealed, as she told ET, "People love Grey's Anatomy. Once I was in a teeny, tiny town in Italy... I couldn't see a lamp post in front of me 'cause it was raining so hard. There were Grey's Anatomy fans that were stopping me in the pouring rain."

"I think people really get attached to the characters 'cause they're living with them," she said. "There's a comfort in that."

Debbie Allen knows the power of Derek and Merediths love story on Grey's Anatomy.

While looking back on the fan-favorite couples 2020 reunion on the ABC medical drama in PEOPLEs new Greys Anatomy special edition issue, the actress and producer, 74, shared she was excited to see Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo, who play Derek Shepherd and Meredith Grey respectively, reunite.

How joyful it was for them to be with each other as Derek and Meredith, Allen says. Its why the show is still going strong. Its why well keep going.

As fans may recall, the series season 17 premiere featured a beach dream sequence of Meredith and her late husband Derek reuniting after she collapsed in the Grey Sloan Memorial parking lot due to the effects of COVID-19. Derek died on the show back in April 2015.

When COVID shut us down, what were we going to do? Allen shares. There was a conversation about not dealing with it. Then it was like a lightning bolt from Ellen Pompeo: We have to deal with it. And we did. I remember shooting that scene on the beach with them and how magical that was to just be with them, together again.

For his part, Dempsey, 58, told Deadline in 2020 that he hopes the cameo was a pleasant surprise for fans.

"I came across a photo that I was going to post that had Ellen and I, and I think that produced a call where I reached out to Ellen, and this was right around, the conversation was starting for season 17. And Ellens like, lets get together, I want to go over a couple things, I want to catch up," he told the outlet at the time.

"We hadnt spoken or been together for a while. It was a great opportunity to catch up and say, okay, what can we do for all the frontline responders?" continued Dempsey. "Ive been tracking what Greys had been doing with giving masks, and making sure that people had the right equipment, and it came from that place okay, what can we do to make people feel better, to give some comfort in this time of uncertainty, and thats how it began. And it was really a wonderful experience to go back, to work with [director] Debbie [Allen]."

"I think the whole atmosphere has changed, certainly working at the beach, and seeing everybody again was really a very healing process, and really rewarding, and a lot of fun," he said.

Pompeo, 54, echoed his sentiments, sharing that it felt great to reunite with her former costar.

Patrick and I have this chemistry where ... it just felt like weve known each other for a hundred years. Its like riding a bike. ... We have a dynamic thats always served us well, and I think we have a genuine affection for each other, she explained.

Dempsey told Variety in 2021 he wouldn't say no to yet another potential comeback after appearing in four episodes during season 17.

"Who knows? Never say never with this show, right?" he said when asked if there were any scenarios he could envision for the show in which Derek would once again make an appearance. "I'm glad we did it this year. And [former showrunner] Krista Vernoff did a fantastic job telling the story."

"It was just a great way to give people some hope," he added.

Meredith’s Reaction In Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 Subtly Continues A Season 10 Derek Story – Screen Rant

Warning! SPOILERS about Greys Anatomy season 20, episode 5 ahead.

Merediths story in Greys Anatomy season 20, episode 5 prompted a fight with Nick and some reminiscing over her peculiar situation when her kids are involved, but it also contradicted a Greys Anatomy season 10 story. While Greys Anatomy season 20 surprisingly gave Meredith a win romantically with Nick moving to Boston to put their relationship first, Merediths trips to and from Seattle for the secret Alzheimers research interfered with it. That is especially true given that the secret trips prompted Nick to often take care of Merediths children, causing arguments between Nick and Meredith in case of emergencies.

Balancing the importance of her secret research with her family commitments proved especially difficult with Catherine on the warpath as a result of Merediths Alzheimers statements in Greys Anatomy season 19s ending. Despite their precarious situation, Richard offered Meredith the Fox Foundations private jet to get her to Boston in time for when Bailey woke up after surgery, proving once again the unbreakability of Meredith and Richards bond in Greys Anatomy. Their trip prompted a rare admission of fragility from Meredith about feeling lonely due to raising her kids without Derek. However, when they raised them together, similar problems arose.

Meredith not wanting to be in the same room with Nick because he didnt call her straight away after suspecting Baileys appendicitis showed how extremely protective she was about her children. Richard and Merediths exchange about her not actually being alone in raising them was a consequence of Richard noticing how closed-off Meredith was with Nick after what happened and of Merediths confession that she felt lonely in raising them without Derek. However, Merediths complaints against Nick in Greys Anatomy season 20 were the same as she had against Derek in Greys Anatomy season 10, episode 20.

Greys Anatomy season 10 saw Meredith and Dereks biggest-ever fight arise from his accepting to lead the presidential brain mapping initiative despite having promised to take a step back to care for their family as Meredith focused on her career. Overwhelmed by all his commitments and accused of dropping the ball on teaching the residents and operating on patients by Hunt and Webber, Derek forgot to tell Meredith with whom their kids were in Greys Anatomy season 10, episode 20, resulting in Meredith being worried about her kids whereabouts for three hours and as she operated on someone.

Merediths confession to Richard in Greys Anatomy season 20 romanticized her past with Derek, forgetting the problems she had when Derek took care of their children and what she accused him of, which exactly mirrored the reason behind Merediths anger at Nick.

For most of Greys Anatomy, Meredith raised her children alone. While Amelia, Maggie and Alex greatly helped her in her day-to-day life, decisions about her children were always taken by Meredith by herself. Merediths apologies to Nick in Greys Anatomy season 20, episode 5 centered the point, as it wasnt that she didnt trust him, but that she was used to making decisions about them on her own. However, changing her approach and including Nick in the decisions might actually help Meredith and her children too.

After all, Merediths inclination to fight for the right thing often impacted her kids as well. When committing insurance fraud in Greys Anatomy season 15, Meredith put her daughter Elliss name on the chart. When she almost lost her medical license the following season, her kids could also be affected as it would have impacted Merediths livelihood and theirs. Thus, making decisions with someone else like Nick could mitigate Merediths recklessness, bringing her out of her comfort zone and helping her, Zola, Bailey and Ellis as a result in Greys Anatomy.

Does ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Really Need To Keep Bringing Back Old Characters? – Collider

The Big Picture

If you listen closely, you can hear the world collectively sigh every time Greys Anatomy gets renewed for another season. Even diehard fans of the series can admit that the series isnt the same as it once was. The quality has drastically diminished, there are like two original characters left, and the storylines are dull and lifeless in comparison to past seasons. Its not unwatchable by any means, but its definitely not as enjoyable as it used to be, which is almost as bad. The show has burnt itself out over the years, yet keeps trudging along. The dedication is admirable, but is it really worth it?

In recent seasons, the show has discovered that a surefire way to boost viewership is to bring back familiar faces. Its why we saw the return of April Kepner (Sarah Drew), why Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) had a mini-arc in Season 19, and why Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) came back for a special appearance in a recent episode. The simple fact is that fans love and miss the old characters, and the showrunners know it, so what better way to excite an audience than to bring those characters back? But the issue is that those characters dont stick around, theyre simply guest stars, and once that special episode ends were back to the regular show, which just isnt as exciting. So, is it really a good idea to bring back the old characters? Or should Greys Anatomy opt for a fresh start?

A drama centered on the personal and professional lives of five surgical interns and their supervisors.

As sad as it is to admit, Greys Anatomys recent seasons just arent on par with previous ones. Its understandable that a show as long-running as Greys Anatomy would have some ups and downs, but its become more and more noticeable that the show is sort of spinning its wheels. Especially with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) taking a step back AKA, the Grey in Greys Anatomy the show feels off-kilter and hasnt quite found its footing again. There are still good episodes, even moments that are quite riveting, but those moments have become increasingly more scarce.

Greys seemingly has lots of content to work with. After all, theres always some crazy medical case that can be invented for the sake of an episode. But it almost feels as though the show has toned down the absurdity of its storylines. No more are the storylines featuring patients with a pole stuck through them, or teenagers who jumped into a vat of cement on a dare. Things are rather benign at Grey Sloan Memorial lately, and though Greys Anatomy would still catch some flack for these types of ridiculous storylines, it never failed to bring in curious audiences who just had to see it to believe it. Now the craziest thing we see on Greys are old characters coming back for a surprise visit. But that may be doing the show more harm than good.

Greys Anatomy has lost its fair share of characters over the seasons. Whether it be that the character dies or the actor portraying them simply decides to leave the show. One of the first major losses the show saw was when George (T.R. Knight) died at the end of Season 5. Izzie (Katherine Heigl) left the show soon after. Lexie (Chyler Leigh) and Mark (Eric Dane) died in the Season 8 plane crash. Cristina (Sandra Oh) left in Season 10, Derek (Patrick Dempsey) died in Season 11, and so on. It feels as if the show has seen more character exits than arrivals, which can shake up any TV show, no matter how stable. But when Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) left in Season 16, thats when the show really went downhill. At that point, he and Meredith were the only original interns left, so his departure left Meredith as the sole member of M.A.G.I.C left at Grey Sloan Memorial. Webber (James Pickens Jr.) and Bailey (Chandra Wilson) are now the only characters from Season 1 that are still around. (Oh, and BokHee (Kathy C. An)! Who can forget BokHee?)

Over the seasons weve seen certain characters return. Such as the aforementioned Addison Montgomery (who has her own spin-off called Private Practice), who has come back sporadically throughout the series to bestow her talents as a neonatal surgeon. Sarah Drew returned briefly and gave us the Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April endgame we had been craving. And who can forget when Meredith was in a COVID-19-induced coma and was visited by the ghosts of Derek, Lexie, Mark, and George? Obviously, as fans, it's exciting to see these characters again and see what theyve been up to since their last stint on the show, but is it really worth it in the end? On the surface it may seem like bringing back fan-favorite characters would be the perfect recipe for success for Greys Anatomy. But that success only lasts as long as the time leading up to the episode and the time it airs. Afterward, things go back to normal and all the excitement and huge moments to look forward to are gone. It feels more like a tease than anything, because we know that once the credits roll we wont be seeing that character again for a while if ever. So yeah, bringing back the old characters helps for an episode, but it isnt enough to revive the series as a whole.

Its never disappointing when Greys Anatomy brings back old characters, but if the show wants to continue moving forward and doing well for itself it needs to opt for a clean slate. Its in a weird sort of limbo state at the moment. So many of the OG characters that made the show what it is, are gone now, and yes, there are still some fan favorites who arrived later, such as Teddy (Kim Raver) and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone). But its about time Greys Anatomy makes a decision about where it wants to go. And at this point, there are really only two options that seem plausible: call it quits or enter a new era of Greys Anatomy. Greys Anatomy 2.0, if you will.

Rather than bringing back old characters in an attempt to capitalize off of its most successful seasons, Greys should start fresh with new interns and fully commit to them. The show did introduce us to a new group of interns, and for a while it seemed like maybe this would be the turning point the show needed, but that quickly proved not to be the case. Characters such as Bailey, Richard, and Amelia can still stick around, the show doesnt need to completely rid itself of its OG characters, but it needs to better commit to the new ones as well. Audiences will never be able to resonate with the new characters if theyre not given the proper screentime and character development. Its probably the shows biggest flaw, in how it introduces what could be really interesting characters but doesnt do much of anything with them and instead focuses on the characters we already know because thats what the show thinks we want. In reality, moving away from those characters wouldnt be a bad thing so long as those we were focusing on instead were just as fleshed out and interesting.

Greys Anatomy used to be so good at introducing new characters with fleshed-out backstories and colorful personalities. Now? Everyone seems dull and there isnt much to latch onto. Theres the occasional character, sure, but none are super memorable and thats rather unfortunate. The show not only needs a revamp with characters though, it also needs to go back to its roots and find that nostalgic balance of drama and comedy that early Greys Anatomy had. Thats what made the show unique. It could take your heart and stomp on it with some of the most gut-wrenching storylines. But it could also make you laugh a scene later. The storylines in general need to be juicier too. Bring back the disaster episodes, bring back the medical cases so ridiculous you cant h
elp but chuckle despite your better judgment, bring back the cheesy love confessions in the scrub room. Its what fans really want.

21 best medical dramas and TV series like Grey’s Anatomy to watch – Prestige Online Singapore

Blending humour, stirring storylines, and heart-wrenching dialogue, Shonda Rhimes Greys Anatomy has captivated viewers and fans since its first episode debuted in March 2005. The rise and popularity of the medical drama are evident in its longevity, with the recent premiere of its record-breaking 20th season proving to lovers and naysayers alike that it is here to stay. If youre a fan of Greys Anatomy, its ensemble cast of characters, and its riveting storylines, these are 21 of the best medical dramas and TV shows to add to your watchlist.

Greys Anatomy has held a special place in the hearts of viewers since its pilot episode first aired in 2005. Nineteen extraordinary years and 20 seasons in, the show remains firmly etched in viewers hearts and minds, forever imprinted as one of the best medical dramas and TV series to have ever graced our television screens. In spite of its many efficacious distinctions, Greys is far from the first medical drama to capture an audience, and it most certainly will not be the last.

Since the release of City Hospital in 1951, medical dramas have become a longstanding staple in the realm of tv series, best beloved amongst casual viewers and hardcore fans alike. Arresting narratives and compelling plotlines created the perfect maelstrom to stoke public interest, whetting viewers appetites for all matters pertaining to medicine. And thus began the golden age of medical dramas, which unfurled an endless procession of programmes.

From classic favourites like ER to laughter-inducing comedies like Scrubs, each fresh offering brought with it a host of lovable characters and enthralling diagnoses all of which viewers ate up with gusto. So prolific was the golden age of medical dramas that it birthed series and shows that continue to grace our screens decades after the airing of their inaugural episodes.

Contrary to its name, BBCs Casualty is the longest-lived and longest-running medical drama in the world, with a staggering 1,331 episodes spread out over 38 seasons. The show first premiered in 1986; today, an extraordinary 38 years later, it is still in production, and continues to be aired on BBC One. And while Casualtys longevity certainly points to a positive trend in viewership and ratings, its not the only show who can boast of a decades-long run.

When the very first episode of General Hospital debuted in 1963, no one could have anticipated the heights it would go on to scale. Sixty-one spectacular years and seasons later, it is the longest-running medical soap opera in the world, its iconic (and sometimes unbelievable) plotlines garnering the love of a cult following that has continued to support the show even today.

So, what makes medical dramas so very addictive, and why do we keep coming back for more?

While different audiences react and reflect differently upon their medical drama addictions, a good assumption is that said dramas provide a balm for lifes unfortunate afflictions. Like death and taxes, health (or the lack thereof) is certain to come for us all in due time. And in times of sickness, what could be more comforting than watching a hero emerge on-screen in the form of a conventionally attractive doctor? From medical personnel who will stop at no end to ensure their patients survival to the tenacity displayed by said patients, medical dramas are here to remind viewers that they, too, can overcome their miserable maladies.

Beyond the intangible fluff of hope, medical dramas also serve as ground zero for discourse on ethics and bedside manner discourse that medical students and policymakers will certainly find helpful in the course of their careers. By presenting dynamic scripts and scenarios, medical dramas provide diegetic value that encourage analysis and deliberations, allowing aspiring physicians to come up with best practices for treatment and patient care alike. This can also help to develop critical thinking and accelerate decision-making with ample research that extends beyond what is portrayed in the show, of course. And, in the case of younger viewers, exposure to physician life, even on screen, can inspire a future career in medicine.

If youre a fan of Greys Anatomy (and other medical dramas), heres a comprehensive list of the best medical dramas and TV series to add to your watchlist!

The Anatomy of An Inning: Justin Slaten Has Been One of the Best Relievers in Baseball – Over The Monster

Welcome back to another edition of The Anatomy of An Inning. My name is Jacob Roy, and I pretend to know pitching better than the pitchers themselves. If youre new here or need a reminder of what this is all about, I take an inning from the previous week or so and break it down, one pitch at a time. Each pitch should have a purpose, Im looking at each of them individually to try to go beyond the box score and tell the full story.

Lets go to Sunday, April 14th. The Red Sox bullpen is shorthanded, and they need multiple innings from Justin Slaten to get back in the win column. He enters the seventh inning after getting a quick double play to end the sixth.

Although Slaten is in his first Major League season, its actually his second time seeing OHoppe. The first time, he struck him out on three pitches, including two incredibly ugly swings on sweepers in the dirt. OHoppe is a fairly aggressive hitter, but he does struggle with pitches down in the zone, so Id expect more sweepers from Slaten.

Slaten starts with a cutter on the inside edge for called strike one. Against a righty, youd like to see this down and away, but OHoppe is taking all the way, so well take the free strike. 0-1.

Heres the sweeper he was able to fool OHoppe with twice in their last meeting. This one stays up in the zone, and OHoppe, although out in front, is able to poke it to left field for a lead-off base hit.

Adell is another free-swinger with tons of strikeouts in his game. He whiffs on just about everything, but breaking balls give him extra trouble (47.1% whiff rate in 2023).

Sweeper below the zone for a swing and miss. Given the swing, Id keep throwing it until he proves he can lay off.

Beautifully executed. Do it again.

Here, Slaten tries to elevate with the four-seamer, but misses his spot and leaves it below the zone. Its far enough below the zone that theres no harm done. Id go back to the sweeper.

Theres another sweeper, and Adell lays off. At 2-2, this is an interesting spot. Adell may feel that hes earned a fastball after spitting on the pitch in the dirt. That makes this the perfect spot to throw another sweeper low and away.

Alright, this works. After Adell takes two pitches below the zone, Slaten tries to execute what we saw Kutter Crawford do a few weeks ago. Hes expecting Adell to continue to take any pitch down in the zone as he reads sweeper, so he wants to throw his four-seamer down and away for called strike three. He doesnt hit his spot, but the pitch ties up Adell who grounds out to third for the first out.

Neto is another hitter Slaten has faced this season once already. The first at-bat ended in a strikeout, with every pitch coming in below the zone.

First pitch cutter that misses high for ball one.

Yikes, this could have been bad. Neto stays back on the sweeper that stays inside and pulls it down the line. Fortunately, it goes foul to even the count.

Much better. Slaten goes back to the sweeper, getting it to the glove side, and Neto is out in front this time as he pops it up weakly for the second out, keeping the runner at second base.

Nothing to see here, just know that Slaten once again missed with his fastball and hit Rendon in the shoulder. Still two outs, just get the next guy.

Again, Slaten has seen Rengifo once this season, also striking him out with exclusively off-speed pitches. With the way the defense has played in recent days, a strikeout would be great to end the inning, but any out works.

Heres a 0-0 cutter that misses outside for ball one.

Beautiful back-foot sweeper for strike one. Rengifo is well out in front, tipping his hand hes looking for a fastball. As such, Id do what Slaten did in their last meeting and stick with the breaking balls.

Heres another sweeper that Rengifo fouls off for strike two. Rengifo is more prepared for this one, fouling it straight back. With two strikes, Id go away from the sweeper after Rengifo appeared prepared for it, and instead throw either a cutter up and in, or a high fastball.

Slaten goes back to the sweeper and Rengifo isnt interested. Now, Slaten finds himself in the same position he was in with Jo Adell. Given that Rengifo is a decent fastball hitter and seemed to be looking for a fastball earlier in the count, I wouldnt throw the low fastball looking for a called strike. If Slaten throws something in the top half of the zone, Rengifo will likely read fastball. For that reason, I like the cutter up and inside to jam him and get out of the inning.

Heres the first curveball of the outing, but it only goes about 59 feet and its not enticing to the hitter. With the count full, and Mike Trout on deck, Slaten should throw whatever he feels comfortable throwing for a competitive strike. He hasnt commanded his fastball well this inning; Id expect a sweeper.

And there it is. Its not the best sweeper hes thrown, but it catches the zone in a tough spot and all Rengifo can do is roll over it for the ground ball.

Justin Slaten has been a key piece of the Red Sox bullpen thus far. In this outing, he didnt have great command of his fastball. Fortunately, the sweeper is his best pitch, returning a 40% whiff rate so far this season. As long as hes keeping the sweeper down, he should continue to get whiffs, strike hitters out, and provide lockdown innings in relief.

Anatomy of a grain storage expansion project – Farm Progress

Tom Nugent, Elnora, Ind., made do with a grain center erected roughly 30 years ago for a long time. When it was clear his son Thomas would be farming for the long haul, Nugent decided to invest in a serious grain center expansion.

In his late 60s, Nugent pulled the trigger very late in 2022, committing to invest in an expansion project with a price tag north of $1 million.

I had two main goals: adding bushels of storage capacity and adding a larger pit so we could unload and get back to the field faster, he says.

Nugent accomplished both goals. The new grain bin holds 145,000 bushels, plus the new wet holding hopper tank holds 10,000 bushels. They can dump a full semiload of corn or soybeans into the pit in a matter of minutes and be off to the field again.

The large pit probably looks like a Cadillac-type system, but I wanted to be sure we could unload quickly so we could keep the combine moving in the field, and not have it waiting on trucks, Nugent explains. With 1-foot-thick walls, it took a lot of concrete, but I am confident that it was done right and will last over the long haul.

Nugent doesnt hesitate when asked if hes glad he pulled the trigger and enlarged the grain system. Yes, I am very glad I did, he responds. I should have done it at least five years sooner, and it would have been cheaper. But material prices arent going down, and it would have been more expensive if I waited another five years.

Related:What will a new grain bin cost?

Because the new 145,000-bushel bin wasnt finished until the 2023 season was almost over, the Nugents didnt get a true test of how it would perform during harvest. However, they did fill the bin with dry corn later, and it passed its inaugural test.

This fall, grain coming out of the field that needs drying will dump into the new pit, travel up the new leg into the wet holding bin, and then enter the dryer. The grain from my dryer unloads into the older leg, Nugent says. From there, it is spouted to the GSI VersaLoop conveyor that takes it to the top of the new bin.

Nugent notes that the VersaLoop is rated at only 4,000 bushels per hour, and that is the rated unload speed of the dryer, too.

We have an ammeter on it so we can make sure we dont overload it if we use it to transfer corn from another bin, he says. I dont anticipate running many bushels through the loop, only during drying season.

One factor in Nugents planning was that they typically dry far fewer bushels today than in the past.

Looking at the big picture, thanks to tiling we have done here that helps us plant earlier, which in turn leads to dryer corn in the field in the fall, it shortens the drying season, Nugent explains. Or it allows us to plant slightly longer-season varieties with higher yield potential.

Drying fewer bushels per season allowed Nugent to extend the life of their current dryer.

We will need to upgrade it at some point, but not now, he says. Our priorities were storage capacity and faster unloading from the field.

Here are key points about Nugents grain center expansion project:

More storage capacity. They added a 145,000-bushel bin that is 60 feet in diameter and 15 rings tall, plus a 10,000-bushel wet holding tank that is 18 feet in diameter and 16 rings tall.

Large pit. The new pit is 30 feet long, 10 feet wide and 12 feet deep, with two U-trough 16-inch augers. It holds about 1,300 bushels, which is more than a semiload.

Overhead doors. The main part of the L-shaped building over the unloading pit is 34 by 20 feet, with doors on automatic openers on each end. If we had built the building 4 feet longer, the door tracks would not be offset, but it is not a big deal, Nugent says.

Lighting for unloading. Lights inside the pit help reduce shadows that would occur when unloading semis at night. There are also pairs of LED lights on each side of the pit partway up the shed walls, but below the height of the overhead doors when open.

Bucket elevator and tower. Partly due to where bins were located and partly for more strength, Nugent opted for a tower to support the bucket elevator instead of a traditional guy-wire arrangement. The tower is 12 by 12 feet and 121 feet tall. The bucket elevator extends below ground level to the bottom of the pit, reducing degree of incline needed on augers. Nugent believes that will extend wear life.

Grain monitoring and aeration. Nugent opted to install the GSI GrainVue automatic grain aeration controller. Linked to weather instruments at the bin site, it aerates grain when necessary. Seven temperature cables inside the new bin report temperature at 4-foot intervals within the grain mass. Moisture cables are also an option.

Cost for this system was about 1% of total cost of the project. There is also a $200-per-year subscription fee so data reaches the cloud. Data and graphs can be viewed on devices, including iPhones, from anywhere.

The controller is a no-brainer, Nugent says. You can program a preferred moisture range for it to operate, and one can re-wet grain and gain bushels. It is more economical for larger bins, and occasionally you may have to replace a cable. But it also offers peace of mind.

Shonda Rhimes Says She Hired Security After ‘Passionate’ ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Fans ‘Got Mean’ Over Season Finales – PEOPLE

Shonda Rhimes is opening up about why she has taken a step back from social media amid the unprecedented success of Grey's Anatomy.

With the hit ABC medical drama in its historic 20th season, the Emmy-nominated show creator, 54, told The Sunday Times that she has seen a shift in the fanbase since the series began in 2005.

Social media changed, she shared. Fans have passionate feelings, and I was always fine with that. I understand that the characters felt like their friends. They were my imaginary friends too. Thats why I was writing them. And I think people just had very strong feelings about what happened with their friends.

She then took a pause, adding, But then it became weird.

The mother of three revealed that she requested a police car to be parked outside her house for a week following Greys Anatomy season finales due to death threats from angry fans.

They got mean, she said of her decision. And you never knew who was going to really take offense in the wrong way.

In fact, she took additional measures including hiring private 24-hour security at her Los Angeles home because people are dangerous and strange.

However, the showrunner who is a mom to Harper, 21, Emerson Pearl, 11, and Beckett, 10 also discussed the mental toll of fearing for her personal safety.

I wanted to just be able to walk out my front door and hang out with my kids and not be worried. I would lay awake at night with stress, she explained.

She admitted the experience affected a lot of things, adding, I had some very helpful friends whod had similar experiences, who were able to give me a lot of perspective, and who were adamant that if you cant live normally then youre not going to be able to live.

She has since moved out of Los Angeles to a state she wont name.

Earlier this month, Rhimes celebrated Grey's Anatomy being renewed for season 21, extending its record as the longest-running primetime medical drama and the networks longest-running primetime scripted series.

This picture was taken in 2015, she shared of a throwback photo of the cast during the celebration for their 250th episode. To still be on your screens, in your living rooms, and in your hearts almost ten years later - words cannot express my gratitude.

Greys was something I made up 20+ years ago, and I am so incredibly proud that its been picked up for its 21st season, she continued. This honestly could not be possible without you guys..caring about the stories I tell, the talented cast, writers, and crew. Wow.

Greys Anatomy Releases Season 20: Premiere Schedule – The DePauw

The American medical drama series Greys Anatomy returns on March 14 for its 20th season after two years of absence from television. The cast is slightly different from the previous season, but the prominent characters remain. However, season 20 will be the first to feature Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) as the recurring character. The actress expressed her desire to experience different roles for the rest of her career, so she decided not to appear regularly in the forthcoming season and remain an executive producer.

The main cast includes Sandra Oh, Patrick Dempsey, Chandra Wilson, Justin Chambers, Katherine Heigl, T.R. Knight, Isaiah Washington, and James Pickens Jr. The only original cast members that remain in season 20 are Chandra Wilsons Miranda Bailey and Jams Pickens Jr. 's Richard Webber.

Due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023, the production of the new season was delayed, leading to a short run of 10 episodes. ABC released the first two episodes on March 14 and March 21, which continue the story from the previous season.

The new season follows the renewed storyline of Meredith, who has to reconsider her plans after going through a hard time. Every character is involved in unexpected incidents: a patients death poses a challenge for all the interns, Richard confides in Bailey, and Teddys fate is revealed.

The beginning of season 20 gained positive reception, with 5.49 million viewers in total in the first episode. According to the announced schedules, Greys Anatomy season 20 will premiere on Thursday every week from 9:00 - 10:00 p.m. ET/PT. The audience can also watch the new season on Hulu the next day.

Anatomy of a genius header by Joshua Kimmich – UCL Moment of the Week – ESPN India

When you see it from the angle shown on the live coverage, you don't really understand where Joshua Kimmich comes from.

The build-up is neat, and you can see that: Leroy Sane receiving a standard Kimmich pass out wide, immediately upping the pace as he cuts inside, skinning Gabriel Martinelli on the outside. You can see Sane squaring up Takehiro Tomiyasu and lifting a ball across the face of the goal that David Raya claws at. You can see Raphael Guerreiro, given way too much room by Ben White, take a touch to take it out of his feet and swings in an interesting looking ball... and the next thing you see is a flash of red and white, and Kimmich absolutely thundering a header into the far top corner.

2 Related

You already know how important the goal is: it took Bayern Munich into the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League semifinals, the goal that dumped Arsenal out of Europe. You've also already seen just how emphatic a finish it was, the purity of the connection, the wow-factor of a header thumping into goal with that force. But it's when you turn the angle a bit, look at it from a bird's eye point of view that you truly appreciate the genius of Kimmich.

Before that pass to Sane, you can see him drive inside, shape to pass to Harry Kane down the inside left... those two movements combine to pull the Arsenal shape within itself, giving Sane the space he needs.

Once he's made the pass to Sane, you can see him jog along, arcing away from goal, seemingly a harmless piece on the chess board. When Sane lifts the ball, Kimmich arcs back, innocuously entering the box along its top corner.

By now all of Arsenal's players on that side have been attracted to Sane's movement and are consequently closer to the six-yard box than they are to the edge of the box. And even as Martinelli jogs back up to recover defensive shape (with Tomiyasu remaining on Sane), Kimmich remains in the blind spot. When Guerreiro has the ball, all eyes are on him, including the three Arsenal players on that left-side of theirs - Martinelli, Tomiyasu, and Declan Rice.

Up until the point Guerreiro looks up to pass, Kimmich has made no sudden movements, drawn absolutely no attention to himself. He might as well not be there. The moment Guerreiro's left foot connects with the ball, though, Kimmich is off -- and by the time the trio have registered this movement, it's too late. All three of them may be faster than him, stronger than him, taller than him, but how do you stop someone you didn't know was there? He steals a yard over the shoulder of Martinelli, dives onto the ball... and BAM!

What makes it even more special is that it was a hugely important goal on a personal level as well. After the game, Kimmich would tell Sky Germany that the goal had felt really good. "I had to hear a lot last year, got very little support," he said. "In the end, it once again proves that hard work pays off."

With Bayern suffering their worst season domestically in over a decade (that still involves being second in the Bundesliga, by the way), Kimmich had been one of those who'd borne the brunt of criticism over the past few months. Initially playing in central midfield fans had called for his head, asking their club to drop him, to move him on. Midfield was the position that he'd always wanted to play, but it wasn't working for him at either club or country.

So both teams moved him back to right back, Bayern in late February, Germany in the last international break in March... and it clicked again. A few games in, he was already dictating games from that right back position, locking down the opposition (like he sealed Arsenal's left flank over both ties), and generally being the absolute best right back in the world.

Now he's got a tangible reward, a first Champions League non-penalty goal since Oct 2020 (against Lokomotiv Moscow) and the winner in a tight, tight semifinal where his team had been considered big underdogs. So, for the personal redemptive arc, for the pure in-game intelligence, for the belligerence of the finish, Joshua Kimmich takes our Moment of the Mid-Week.

Grey’s Anatomy Confirms A Fatal Flaw In Meredith’s Story After 20 Seasons – Screen Rant

Spoilers are ahead for Grey's Anatomy season 20, episode 5.

Grey's Anatomy season 20, episode 5 confirms a fatal flaw in Meredith Grey's (Ellen Pompeo) story and it has nothing to do with the surgeon's groundbreaking Alzheimer's research. In fact, the problem at hand has been apparent for the series' last decade, but it seems like Pompeo's decreased screentime has emphasized the long-standing Meredith Grey problem. When the Shonda Rhimes-created show premiered in 2005, it opened with then-surgical intern Meredith Grey and her supposed one-night stand. A few scenes later, Meredith realizes her fling is none other than neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), her superior.

For a few seasons, Meredith and Derek were Grey's Anatomy 's most stable pair...

For several seasons, Meredith and Derek's fraught romance defined the show's narrative. Derek, who Meredith and her best friend Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) dub "McDreamy," is initially getting out of an on-the-rocks marriage. Meredith tells Derek to choose her and, eventually, he does, but it certainly takes awhile for the two surgeons to get on the same page, as evidenced by Meredith and Derek's wild relationship timeline. For a few seasons, Meredith and Derek were Grey's Anatomy's most stable pair, but things took a turn in season 10, and that fallout is still defining Meredith Grey's love life.

Grey's Anatomy season 20 continues Meredith's relationship with Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman), a world-class transplant surgeon who previously worked with Meredith during her brief stint at Minnesota's Mayo Clinic. After receiving a kidney transplant himself, Nick flies out to Grey Sloan to retrieve donor organs. After Nick collapses, his medical mishap creates something of a bonding experience for him and Meredith. Later, the pair reconnect, which leads to a long-distance romance of sorts as Meredith shuffles between Mayo and Grey Sloan. Slowly but surely, Meredith realizes her relationship with Nick is serious, so he relocates to Seattle.

Nick takes [Meredith's harsh words] as a sign of her distrust in his abilities as a doctor, caretaker, and partner.

As Nick takes on Grey Sloan's intern program in season 19, Meredith seems ready to move across the country to pursue Alzheimer's research for the Catherine Fox Foundation. Understandably, Nick is frustrated: He uprooted his life for Meredith and her family. In Grey's Anatomy season 19's ending, Nick and Meredith reconnect, though Meredith still makes choices that disappoint Nick. In season 20, Meredith travels between Seattle and Boston on the regular, leaving Nick in Boston with her children Zola, Bailey, and Ellis. By episode 5, their fraught relationship dynamic comes to a head when Bailey needs an appendectomy.

Instead of calling Meredith immediately, Nick takes Bailey to the hospital, leaving Zola in charge of Ellis. While on the phone with her eldest daughter, Meredith learns that Nick rushed Bailey to surgery. After flying to Boston, Meredith cuts Nick off at every turn. She can't believe he'd make decisions about her kids without calling her first, which Nick takes as a sign of her distrust in his abilities as a doctor, caretaker, and partner. By the end of Grey's Anatomy season 20, episode 5, Meredith apologizes for her harsh words, but it's clear the couple's relationship is strained.

Nick is like a father to his niece, Charlotte Marsh, who he initially prioritizes over Meredith.

Meredith's troubled relationship with Nick is symptomatic of a larger problem in the surgeon's love life. Since Derek was killed in Grey's Anatomy season 11, Meredith has struggled to find a functional long-term relationship. From casual flirtations with Atticus "Link" Lincoln (Chris Carmack) and Cormac Hayes (Richard Flood) to her passionate-yet-tragic romance with Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti), none of Meredith's post-Derek relationships have stuck. Before Nick, cardio surgeon Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson) seemed like a good fit, but the pair's relationship ended suddenly when Riggs' presumed-dead partner Megan Hunt (Abigail Spencer), returned.

When Cristina Yang leaves Grey's Anatomy in season 10, she reminds Meredith that Derek isn't "the sun." Meredith's life doesn't have to revolve around Derek's ambitions, and hers should be equally important. It's a conversation that plagued Meredith and Derek's marriage for the bulk of season 10, with Meredith admitting that they'll always fall into the intern-attending dynamic of when they first met. Cristina's parting words strengthen Meredith's resolve; when Derek is offered a high-powered, cutting-edge neuro job in Washington D.C., Meredith tells him to take it, though she'll stay behind in Seattle with the kids.

Meredith's issues with Derek are a continual deal-breaker.

Meredith doesn't want to hold Derek back, but she also can't sacrifice her own wants, needs, and career. She can't live with him denying his own ambitions and then quietly resenting her for it. Clearly, Meredith's issues with Derek are a continual deal-breaker. The surgeon is proud of her work and her research; if prioritizing her partner's goals means taking away from her own, Meredith won't compromise. While Meredith and Nick might have worked when things were less serious when things were easy and fun season 20 proves they aren't a solid endgame.

With Ellen Pompeo's role on Grey's Anatomy significantly reduced, it feels unnecessary to prioritize Meredith's love life, especially when her groundbreaking (and very personal) Alzheimer's research is the more significant thread. In season 20, Meredith pulls Derek's sister, neuro surgeon Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone), into her research, setting up a clear-cut reason for Pompeo's guest appearances. If anything, Meredith's romantic tribulations cement the fact that romance will never eclipse her work. Clearly, the series wants to give Meredith a "happy ending," so it should embrace her success as a single person, mother, and surgeon in Grey's Anatomy season 21.

New episodes of Grey's Anatomy season 20 air on Thursdays on ABC with next-day streaming available via Hulu.
