Dad of Sandy Hook victim wins $450K suit against conspiracy theorist – New York Post

The father of a boy killed in the Sandy Hook school shooting has been awarded $450,000 in a lawsuit against a conspiracy theorist who claimed the massacre never happened.

Leonard Pozner, whose 6-year-old son, Noah, was the youngest of 26 killed in the Connecticut slaughter, successfully sued the authors of Nobody Died at Sandy Hook for claiming he faked copies of his sons death certificate.

The book accused him of being a central part of a conspiracy staged by the Obama administration to enforce tighter gun restrictions. Pozners attorney, Genevieve Zimmerman, called the conspiracy alt-right opium that went around the internet like a virus.

James Fetzer, a retired University of Minnesota Duluth professor, was ordered Tuesday to pay $450,000 by the Wisconsin jury that took almost four hours to decide the amount.

AP

Pozner thanked the Dane County jury for recognizing the pain and terror that Mr. Fetzer has purposefully inflicted on me and on other victims of these horrific mass casualty events, according to the the Wisconsin State Journal.

Mr. Fetzer has the right to believe that Sandy Hook never happened, he said, according to the report. He has the right to express his ignorance.

This award, however, further illustrates the difference between the right of people like Mr. Fetzer to be wrong and the right of victims like myself and my child to be free from defamation, free from harassment and free from the intentional infliction of terror.

Fetzer, who now lives in Wisconsin, called the damages absurd and said he would appeal.

The books co-author, Mike Palacek, reached a settlement with Pozner last month. The terms were never disclosed.

Pozner is among a group of Sandy Hook parents whose defamation case against right-wing conspiracy theorist and Infowars host Alex Jones is pending, the State Journal reported.

‘Big Mouth’ Mouths Off To Anti-Semites In Its Third Season – Forward

The new season of Netflixs Big Mouth, the subversive-in-the-extreme sex-ed show about middle schoolers animated adventures in puberty, features the following: The ghost of Harry Houdini; a mist of vape smoke blown into the shape of a Magen David; Neo-Nazis and falsely philo-Semitic Evangelicals; a Passover episode involving incest; a bachelorette party game where you pin Lenny Kravitzs manhood onto his thigh; a discussion of Liev Schreibers net worth; a distinction drawn between Fox News Jews and NPR Jews; Carol Kane as a spirit called The Menopause Banshee; a Michael Douglas wig used in a musical adaptation of Barry Levinsons 1994 film Disclosure.

All this to say, this season, like the seasons before, has a lot of Jewish content. And this consistency is, make no mistake, an act of defiance on the part of the showrunners.

Like a long line of Jews before them, creators Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg who both, no surprise, developed their comedic sensibilities at a Solomon Schechter school in Westchester County, New York Jennifer Flackett and Mark Levin, have been smeared for speaking about sex in all its grody glory. Alt-Right corners of the internet see Big Mouth, with its frank libidinal charge, forward-thinking ideas and sexual situations involving pubescent characters (all voiced by adults) as a sign of social decay brought to you by the usual cabal of Hollywood Heebs. Right-wing conspiracy website The Goldwater ran the headline Jewish Netflix Series Big Mouth Promotes Pedophilia, Homosexuality, Child Masturbation. A YouTube video took pains to connect Kroll, his show and Harvey Weinstein in a web of degeneracy. (YouTube comments are best avoided for ones mental health.)

The response to these charges is unequivocal. In Episode 2, one of the protagonists, Andrew Glouberman (John Mulaney), attends a mens rights activist meeting that he soon learns is also a neo-Nazi event. The speaker there claims that womens brains are smaller than mens and goes on to allege that his wifes Jew lawyer said she left him for a black doctor because he beat up his gay neighbor.

When he calls for a Patriarchal ethnostate of pure, European blood, Andrews fascist sense starts tingling: Okay, I get it now. Theyre Nazis.

Next thing you know, Maury the hormone monster (Kroll), Andrews Satyr-like guardian angel, appears dressed like Shoshana from Inglorious Basterds, ready to blow up the hotel convention space that the white supremacists had booked for the night.

In another, later, rebuttal to the Proud Boy set, Andrews father, Marty (Richard Kind), can be heard objecting to the sperm and menarche-themed opening credits saying, The Neo-Nazi trolls on YouTube are right this show is disgusting! But, the subject of that episode, a trip to Florida where Nick Birch (also Kroll) and Andrew observe a Seder, thumbs its nose at the haters, framing the Passover story as, in Martys words, the one time our people did the screwing.

Spun throughout the episodes, in between themes of toxic masculinity, male allyship, the vivid spectrum of human sexuality and the addictive nature of smartphones, is a thread of disquiet thrumming explicitly for American Jews.

When Jessi Glaser (Jessi Klein), goes to the home of her best friend, Matthew (Andrew Rannels), for the first time, she meets his naval officer father, who picks up on her Jewish last name. He asks if her mother is also Jewish, and when Jessi confirms this, he says he and his wife love all those traditional Jewish sitcoms, including The Nanny, Seinfeld, Mad About You, and controversially, Friends.

Its a tense moment for a cartoon about pubic hair, unwanted erections and learning how to pleasure yourself with the aid of a Price is Right-style Alpine Climber shaped like a vulva. It goes deeper, though.

In the middle of the season, Jessi confides in Matthew that his father loves her, noting, He said the rapture cant happen without me and my people. The joke is a one-off line, but speaks to the hidden engine of the show.

Under-girding all of Big Mouth, and making its onslaught of gross-out humor and taboo predicaments endurable, is an empathy for kids forced to grow up too fast. Teens are terrors, it acknowledges, but ones who are finding their footing in spite of an insanity-inducing hormonal cocktail brewing inside them. Add being Jewish to the mix, and things dont get any easier. Surrounded by Christian classmates, teachers and neighbors, they may feel like even more of a freak or geek - especially now.

The creators are aware of the online hate theyre getting. They are also surely aware that the always-online middle-schoolers of today are seeing the same thing. Internet trolls, white nationalists and the American president are giving all of Gen Z an education in dog whistle politics and anti-Semitic tropes that recall the youth of their great-grandparents.

And so, the shows approach is blunt, yet reassuring. Whether or not kids are watching the black box of viewer information hoarded by Netflix gives us no daylight there the message is for them and for their guardians. It tells adolescents that their elders know about the state of the world, and are unafraid to it broach with humor. It tells Jews who have passed the gauntlet of puberty to give kids a break, and to let them know that the comedy offensive is sometimes the best one.

But this tactic carries a tertiary lesson for those who hate us. It lets them know we see them, and they wont stop us from laughing.

Caught out that it was Abiy Ahmed, not Greta? I can help repurpose your rant content – The Guardian

Huge congratulations to the prime minister of Ethiopia, who has just been awarded the Nobel peace prize in Oslo, beating out competition from hotly fancied regional candidate Greta Thunberg. Abiy Ahmed was garlanded for his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, and for bringing an end to more than 20 years of conflict between Ethiopia and its neighbouring Eritrea. So yes, this is a victory.

But in a very real sense, far more deeply felt in the content mills of the west, it is also a tragedy. Clearly, Abiys win and Gretas loss leaves countless angry hacks, pundits, shockjocks, populists, provocateurs and alt-right conspiracists with an unexpected hole in their rant schedule. The crusaders had their already somewhat familiar backlashes against this 16-year-old climate activist all ready to go, and then this absolute dog in the manger goes and ruins it for them. How dare he?! That is the most urgent question we face today.

Youll see how easily your criticisms of Greta can be applied to Abiy or anyone else who actually cares about anything

For those guys and they are mostly guys, for whatever reason I have good news. Im here to assist! I know the one type of recycling you really commit to is content recycling. Specifically, your own. Some of you are so committed to this lifestyle that you have not actually availed yourself of any new content in years so why should this occasion be any different? Why not slightly repurpose your anti-Greta rants to suit the person who did end up winning? Simply take your exact same Greta attack lines, and substitute him and his for she and her. Honestly, youll see how easily your rabid criticisms of Greta can be applied to Abiy or, indeed, to anyone else, from anywhere, who actually cares about anything, and tries to do something about it. What follows will show you just how interchangeable your theory-of-everything arguments are. And I hope youll be grateful for the fact Ive included a leeetle pushback against each one, just to keep you sharp.

Like Greta, Abiys voice is weird. Yes, he has an Ethiopian accent. But listen: try not to be overly triggered by people who speak differently to you. If it helps, imagine Greta and Abiy are a pair of European football managers who if they finally wearied of humouring your imbecilic questions could actually insult members of your trade in at least four languages.

Like Greta, Abiy can be publicly emotional. Definitely. In June he was seen weeping at a memorial to an assassinated general. I think people generally prefer the cold, hard logic you scream into the camera on your conspiracy-zine cable show.

Like Greta, Abiy goes about things the wrong way. I feel sure youre on to something here Abiys brand of politics has been credited for its informality, energy and charisma, and you could definitely pick holes in that. One east African political expert said of Abiys rapid achievements in a single year: For Ethiopia, a country where everything has been done in a very prescriptive, slow and managed way, these changes are unprecedented. As you have done with Greta, I know youll find a way of tutting that there are established ways of doing things, and those who dont adhere to them should be treated with suspicion and barely masked fear.

Like Greta, Abiy seems to have a pretty high opinion of himself. I know, right? People have said this about Abiy. And I know Ive heard it about Greta. In fact, I think I heard it on TV, from you, one of those times you went all the way out to the Sky TV studios at half past eleven at night to do the paper review to build your media brand.

Like Greta, Abiy does not speak for working-class people. This ones always worth a punt, so wheel it out again. But to clarify, I assume were talking about working-class people where you are honking this particular observation, typically a broadcast studio in London? Its possible you need to get out a little more and most particularly, out of broadcast studios. For now, let me bring you up to speed: working-class people in Ethiopia really did care about Abiys cause, just as working-class people in, say, the Philippines, definitely care about Gretas cause, because theyre going to drown before you do. This is how we know theres no climate justice in the world.

Like Greta, Abiy just picked a right-on cause. Well, quite and the last thing you should do is wonder why it was right-on. Instead, try to get 10 minutes of talk radio out of explaining why caring about Ethiopia is very Bob Geldof. If anyone can, you can.

Like Greta, is it possible Abiy is being influenced by his parents? Both of Abiys parents are dead, but this is still an important point: its definitely possible they have had an influence on his life. Many people have parents who are or were interested in the things they are interested in, who wished them success, and basically agreed with them on several subjects. Parsing your entire output, Im guessing you dont. Are these two things maybe connected? I know you value saying the unsayable above all, so in that spirit youd support me asking: is it possible your parents openly dislike you? Or maybe secretly do?

Like Greta, shouldnt Abiy be in school? Not really. Im afraid the Ethiopian prime minister is 43, so this is the one point I think youre going to struggle to upcycle. Still, Im sure you could imply heavily that he has an awful lot to learn. We all have and seemingly from you. As long as asking why someone isnt in school counts as you being in work, the entire planet should simply thank you for your service.

Elizabeth Warren is trying to be even tougher on China than Trump, says Steve Bannon – CNBC

Sen. Elizabeth Warren is positioning herself to be tougher on China that President Donald Trump, former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon told CNBC on Friday.

"She's trying to get to the right of President Trump," said Bannon, who helped Trump win the White House in 2016 and influenced the early months of the administration.

"If you look at Elizabeth Warren, some of the Democrats, they're trying to get to the right of Trump on China."

Warren in late July released what she called an "economic patriotism" agenda, which outlined her approach on China. "We've let China get away with the suppression of pay and labor rights, poor environmental protections, and years of currency manipulation," Warren wrote in her blog post.

Bannon, who formerly ran the Breitbart News far-right media outlet, has said a key focus in the presidential election will be China. Candidates who pressure Beijing and show they can navigate a trade deal between the world's two largest economies will do better, the longtime critic of China added.

Warren is the only viable Democratic candidate in play who is willing and able to take on China, Bannon said in the interview on "Squawk Box," arguing that former Vice President Joe Biden's campaign is on the decline.

Extreme talk from Warren on China, coupled with her wealth-taxing proposals, could well lead to a centrist challenger joining the race, Bannon speculated. He reiterated his belief that Hillary Clinton or former New York City mayor and billionaire businessman Mike Bloomberg will challenge Warren. Bloomberg and Clinton have repeatedly said they do not plan on launching 2020 campaigns.

Bannon predicted Biden, who has seen his frontrunner status dwindle as Warren surges, will drop out of the race by the end of the year.

Reacting to Bannon's remarks, Biden spokesman Andrew Bates wrote to CNBC by email: "When the festering underbelly of the alt-right is threatened by you, you know you're standing up for our best values."

"Donald Trump's presidency is in a tailspin because of actively seeking foreign interventions in American democracy," Bates also wrote, referring the House Democrats' impeachment inquiry that centers on whether the president sought help from a foreign power to damage Biden.

The US has a role in the Middle East – Daily Sabah

A confused President Donald Trump has been confusing the whole world. He is not clear on whether the U.S. has a role in Middle East politics. He is defending his decision to allow Turkey to do the chore of wiping out Daesh terrorists, claiming that the U.S. had no business to be there in the first place. I'll beg to differ with him on this one.

With his pending impeachment inquiry, these are rough days for the U.S. president. He's been betrayed; he said he didn't know if Rudy Giuliani was still his lawyer after he ravaged him with the impeachment scourge. Giuliani has his own vendetta with democratic contender Joe Biden; but any dirt that Giuliani dug up in Ukraine about Biden and his son is not required to win the 2020 elections. Giuliani and the old cadres of the Republicans cannot grasp the new populist and extreme right-wing tendencies in U.S. politics. This new alt-right has individualistic selfishness in its roots, which is the new manifestation of the egocentrism ever-present among the American people.

Trump is right when he thinks that the U.S. public in general would like the idea of "bringing the boys back home" by cooperating with Turkey in Syria. However, he is wrong in thinking that then U.S. has no business in the Middle East. He should not forget the fact that the U.S. had taken over the keys to the major ports in the Middle East capitals from the British at Yalta on Feb. 4, 1945. Since then, the U.S. has played the imperialistic role British Prime Minister Winston Churchill conferred on them. The new alt-right politics does not require world dominance, and Trump is trying to shrink from the duties associated with it.

The U.S. may shed its imperialistic fur, but it cannot leave the Middle East in shambles. Mr. Trump knows better than anyone else that his predecessors put the whole region, from Bangladesh to Kashmir, from Afghanistan to Iraq, from Syria to Jerusalem, into this mess. On top of this, his own egomaniacal politics, like pillaging occupied Arab lands and giving them to Israel, made an already bad situation even worse. The U.S. has to redress the damage it has done in the region.

But the most crucial problem is in Syria. After Operation Peace Spring, Turkey will hopefully be able to return at least 2 million Syrians back to their country. Thanks to the faulty policy choices starting with James Baker in 1998, continuing with Hillary Clinton in 2013, and finally ending with Rex Tillerson and Mike Pompeo as secretaries of state, the United States harmed all the peoples in Iraq and Syria.

The Kurds of Syria have especially been left to the mercy of the PKK terrorist organization. Instead of cooperating with Turkey from the beginning to crush Daesh, U.S. policymakers and those responsible for implementing policy elected to form armies out of PKK terrorists, training and equipping them, and then used them as their boots on the ground against Daesh. The people in the State Department and Defense Department called these terrorist armies "the Kurdish people" and carved a homeland for them in Syria.

The Syrian government has abused the Kurdish people and denied them equal citizenship rights since the 1960s. The Kurds need to be treated equally in their country, by their government. But all other people in Syria also need the same thing: equal, democratic and humane treatment by the government.

The PKK and its Syrian extension, the Democratic Union Party (PYD), could not and have not provided those democratic rights to the Kurds, Arabs and Turkmens in Syria. As a result of the de facto dismemberment of the country, more than 1 million Kurds fled PKK/PYD-held areas and took refuge in Turkey. The other 2 million Syrian refugees in Turkey are also from PYD-ruled areas.

After Turkey's military operation brings peace back to the area, the Astana and Geneva partners should get to work and put the country into shape. The Turkish military operation will be the guarantee of the territorial integrity that the new Syria will have.

Police Officer Who Funded ‘Violent’ Activities by Far-Right Proud Boys Group Goes Unpunished – Newsweek

A police officer who was found to have been a paying member of the far-right Proud Boys group will face no disciplinary action after it was ruled he did not break any department policies.

An investigation was launched into officer Kevin P. Wilcox, of the East Hampton police department in Connecticut, after the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law group expressed concerns about his online activity to the force.

The civil rights group accused Wilcox of making monthly transactions to the hate group which helped them raise money to commit "violent or otherwise illegal" activities, reports the Associated Press.

Proud Boys, listed as an "extremist group with ties to white nationalism" by the FBI, are known to take part in political rallies that frequently erupt into violence while being met with counter-protests.

East Hampton Police Chief Dennis Woessner confirmed that Wilcox was a member of the far-right group and had made online payments to one of their leaders. He said that Wilcox "stopped his association" with the Proud Boys in February, around five months before he was brought to the force's attention by the civil rights group.

Woessner said that he then received an "explanatory report" from Wilcox and closed the review after ruling the concerns "unfounded," citing that there was no evidence he violated any police policy.

In a letter to the civil rights group on September 13, Woessner added that Wilcox "adamantly denies being associated with white supremacists' groups."

Kristen Clarke, president and executive director of Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, told the AP she was "astounded" by the decision not to take action against the officer.

"In an era where we are seeing a spike in white supremacist activity, this should sound an alarm," she said. "It should not be business as usual."

Woessner said that there is no question that Wilcox "is not a white supremacist," pointing to how there has never been any racial bias complaints made about him during his 20 years at the department.

The police chief added that records show that Wilcox only stopped white people between January 2018 and September 2019, albeit while patrolling an area which is overwhelmingly white.

Clarke has demanded that the force retrospectively review any stops and arrests made by Wilcox to see if there was any racial biases, which the force has so far failed to comply with.

"We're seeing an increase in white supremacists and extremists infiltrating the ranks of law enforcement," Clarke tweeted after the review into Wilcox ended. "We are taking action to fight back."

Proud Boys, who were launched in 2016 by Vice Media co-founder turned alt-right figurehead Gavin McInnes, have been listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

They have become infamous for their violent political rallies or instances of disorder in cities such as New York and Portland, Oregon.

Last year, Facebook removed Proud Boy pages from the social network for violating their policies against hate speech.

Louis Theroux ‘very wary’ of platforming hate after neo-Nazi documentary – Metro.co.uk

Louis and the Nazis aired in 2003 (Picture: PA, BBC)

Louis Theroux has admitted that he would struggle to make his 2003 documentary Louis and the Nazis in 2019 due to the fascist ideologys movement from the fringes to mainstream politics.

The British documentary maker has never shied away from covering controversial topics in his TV series, famously documenting the lives of Scientologists, homophobic preachers and, of course, Jimmy Savile.

But with the rise of the alt-right in the US and Europe, Louis told a crowd at Cheltenham Literature Festival that his 2003 documentary following American neo-Nazis would carry different weight if it was released today.

Im on board with the whole idea that platforming is something that should be thought through carefully, he said, admitting that the world has changed a lot in the last 16 years.

Speaking about his experience working on the 2003 documentary, the 49-year-old continued: Back in the days of when I made Louis and the Nazis [], I spent days, if not a couple of weeks, with basically card-carrying national socialists people who had the most extreme version of Nazism as you can imagine.

I think the reason I felt it was OK was that it was so far outside the window of acceptable discourse that it was verging on pathology. If they had been closer to the mainstream you might have imagined we are giving them some sort of currency.

However, 2019s political landscape is vastly different, with Louis admitting: In this day and age, when you have members of the alt right who, in some cases, have crypto-fascist views or coded racist views and some not-so-coded racist views, and there is a trickle up or trickle down to the White House, suddenly you are in a different space.

You are in danger of lending credence to or popularising hate and, as a result, I have been very wary of doing that.

The journalist, whose new book Gotta Get Theroux This was released in September, has recently opened up about his infamous 2001 Savile documentary, calling the filming process: as the strangest and most upsetting thing Ive ever been involved in.

The experience rocked Louis, who was shocked by Saviles tactics to avoid being labelled a paedophile.

The hallmark of his offending was he was weirdly brazen in his ability to address it and take the position that is completely bizarre, he said.

He had an ability not to be nobbled by it. When he was confronted about his offending, people did come to confront him and he had the ability to brazen it out.

Satire or Propaganda? The Free Speech Implications of the Violent Trump Video – WDET

A fake and incredibly violent video emerged over theweekend.

In it, Donald Trump is seen attacking his enemies inside the Church of Fake News including a variety of outlets like NPR, CNN and the Washington Post. As Lynyrd Skynyrds Free Bird plays in the background, Trump in a church massacre scene from the 2014 movie Kingsman shoots, stabs and lights fire to members of the news media along with late Senator John McCain, former Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, Senator Bernie Sanders, the Black Lives Matter movementand Congresswoman Maxine Waters, amongothers.

While this could technically be defined as satire something that is a cornerstone of democracy and freedom of speech it feels downright disturbing to watch this video in a time when the president is openly aggressive in his verbal attacks against these people and organizations, and mass shootings are happeningregularly.

Its also worth noting that this video was shown at a Republican event at one of Trumps resorts inFlorida.

This was one of those instances where you cant help but be angry, says Tim Alberta, POLITICO Magazines chief political correspondent, on Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson. POLITICO is one of the news organizations depicted in the video beingkilled.

This is a really tense time in America, and when the President of the United States is regularly deploying violent rhetoric against the media, and he does not immediately come out on camera to denounce [the video], its just disturbing, Albertacontinues.

Experts who study satire and propaganda say that this video could fit into the definition of either of those kinds of speech. They say, although Trump might not be directly responsible for the video, he should still bear some of the moral burden itcreates.

Although the violence in the video was fiction, that kind of violence is not fictional, points out University of Texas Rio Grande Valley associate professor of philosophy Cory Wimberly, the author of an upcoming book called How Propaganda Became PublicRelations.

A lot of it is coded. There are a lot of things we might see when we see the video, but there are also elements of it that are only meant to be understood by its intended audience that are lost on the rest of us, he continues, referencing memes on alt-right and incelinternetforums.

Fred Vultee, a Wayne State University associate professor of journalism who studies satire, says the video might be repugnant, but its still likely constitutionally protectedspeech.

Its hard to me to look at this and think that it poses a direct threat to anyone, says Vultee. I dont think, partly because its been up for 15 months now, that an immediate effect of this is likely. But there might be a more indirect and a more tangentialeffect.

Richard B. Spencer – Wikipedia

Richard Bertrand Spencer (born May 11, 1978)[1] is an American white supremacist.[2]He is president of the National Policy Institute (NPI), a white supremacist think tank, as well as Washington Summit Publishers. Spencer rejects the label of white supremacist and considers himself a white nationalist, white identitarian, and the equivalent of a "Zionist" for white people.[3][4][5][6] Spencer created the term "alt-right", which he considers a movement about "white identity".[7][8][9] Spencer advocates white-European unity and a "peaceful ethnic cleansing" of nonwhites from America.[10][11][12]

Spencer has been described as a neo-Nazi and has publicly engaged in Nazi rhetoric on many occasions.[13][14][15][16] In early 2016, Spencer was filmed giving the Nazi salute to Milo Yiannopoulos in a karaoke bar.[17] In the weeks following the 2016 U.S. presidential election, at a National Policy Institute conference, Spencer quoted from Nazi propaganda and denounced Jews.[9] In response to his cry "Hail Trump, hail our people, hail victory!", a number of his supporters gave the Nazi salute and chanted in a similar fashion to the Sieg Heil chant used at the Nazis' Nuremberg rallies.[18][19]

Spencer promotes his views through writing, media appearances, and college speaking tours. He was a featured speaker at the August 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, during which an alt-right supporter drove his car into a group of counter-protesters, killing one and injuring at least 19 others.[20][21][22] Spencer denies any role or culpability in the attack, but has been sued for allegedly acting as a "gang boss" at Charlottesville and inciting the killing.[23][24] After three other supporters of Spencer were charged with attempted homicide following Spencer's October 2017 speech at the University of Florida,[25] Ohio State and several other universities cancelled Spencer's appearances, describing his presence as a menace to public safety.[26] In 2018, Spencer suspended his college tour indefinitely.[27]

The majority of European nations, including the entire Schengen Area,[28] and nations with nationalist governments,[29] have banned Spencer and condemned his message.[30] While promoting his message in a controversial speaking tour in Hungary, Spencer was mocked by the Hungarian newspaper Npszabadsg for his claim to be a "racial European", which the newspaper said had no basis in European history, and for his call for "European unity" through a revival of the Roman Empire.[31] In the aftermath of the controversy, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbn banned and condemned Spencer.[29] The government of Poland has also banned and condemned Spencer,[32] citing Spencer's Nazi rhetoric and the Nazis' genocide of Slavic "Untermenschen" during World War II.[33] In July 2018, Spencer was detained at Reykjavk airport en route to Sweden and ordered by Polish officials to return to the United States; the successful effort of the Poles to ban Spencer from other parts of Europe arises from the Schengen agreement.[34]

Spencer was born in Boston, Massachusetts,[35] the son of ophthalmologist Rand Spencer and Sherry Spencer (ne Dickenhorst),[36][37] an heiress to cotton farms in Louisiana.[38] He grew up in Preston Hollow, Dallas, Texas.[39] In 1997, he graduated from St. Mark's School of Texas.[38] In 2001, Spencer received a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Music from the University of Virginia and, in 2003, a Master of Arts in the Humanities from the University of Chicago.[38] He spent the summer of 2005 and 2006 at the Vienna International Summer University.[40] From 2005 to 2007, he was a PhD student at Duke University studying modern European intellectual history, where he was a member of the Duke Conservative Union.[38][36] His website says he left Duke "to pursue a life of thought-crime".[41]

From March to December 2007, Spencer was assistant editor at The American Conservative magazine. According to founding editor Scott McConnell, Spencer was fired from The American Conservative because his views were considered too extreme.[36] From January 2008 to December 2009, he was executive editor of Taki's Magazine.[10]

In March 2010, Spencer founded AlternativeRight.com, a website he edited until 2012. He has stated that he created the term alt-right.[9]

In January 2011, Spencer became executive director of Washington Summit Publishers.[11] In 2012, Spencer founded Radix Journal as a biannual publication of Washington Summit Publishers.[10] Contributions have included articles by Kevin B. MacDonald, Alex Kurtagi, and Samuel T. Francis.[42] He also hosts a weekly podcast, Vanguard Radio.

In January 2011, Spencer also became president and director of the National Policy Institute (NPI), a think tank previously based in Virginia and Montana.[43] George Hawley, an assistant professor of political science at the University of Alabama, has described NPI as "rather obscure and marginalized" until Spencer became its president.[44]

In 2014, Spencer was deported from Budapest, Hungary, (and, because of the Schengen Agreement, banned from 26 countries in Europe for three years) after trying to organize the National Policy Institute Conference, a conference for white nationalists.[45][46]

On January 15, 2017, Spencer launched AltRight.com, another commentary website for alt-right members.[47] According to Spencer, the site is a populist and big tent site for members of the alt-right.[48] Swedish publisher Daniel Friberg of Arktos Media is co-founder and European editor of the site.[49] The Southern Poverty Law Center describes the common thread among contributors as anti-Semitism, rather than white nationalism or white supremacism in general.[50][51] Notable contributors on AltRight.com include Henrik Palmgren and Jared Taylor.[52][53]

On February 23, 2017, Spencer was removed from the Conservative Political Action Conference where he was giving statements to the press. A CPAC spokesman said he was removed from the event because other members found him "repugnant".[54]

On May 13, 2017, Spencer led a torch-lit protest in Charlottesville, Virginia, against the vote of the city council to remove a statue of Robert E. Lee, the commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia during the American Civil War.[55] Spencer led the crowd in chants of "You will not replace us" and "Blood and soil".[56][57] Michael Signer, the mayor of Charlottesville, called the protest "horrific", and stated that it was either "profoundly ignorant" or intended to instill fear among minorities "in a way that hearkens back to the days of the KKK".[56][55][58]

In August 2017, Spencer was listed on posters promoting the Charlottesville, Virginia, Unite the Right rally, which devolved into a notorious and violent confrontation.[59]

In November 2017, Twitter removed from Spencer's account the blue check mark that, reported The Washington Post, "the company gives to prominent accounts to help readers ensure they are authentic". Spencer told The Post he was worried this would lead to Twitter banning people like him.[60] He later joined the social network Gab.[61]

Spencer was invited to speak at Vanderbilt University in 2010 and Providence College in 2011 by Youth for Western Civilization.[62][63]

During a speech Spencer gave in mid-November 2016 at an alt-right conference attended by approximately 200 people in Washington, D.C., Spencer quoted Nazi propaganda in the original German and denounced Jews.[9] Audience members cheered and made the Nazi salute when he said, "Hail Trump, hail our people, hail victory!"[9][64] and extended his right arm with a glass to toast that victory.[65] Spencer later defended their conduct, stating that the Nazi salute was given in a spirit of "irony and exuberance".[66] It was later revealed that Spencer had made the Nazi salute at a karaoke bar in April 2016.[17]

Groups and events Spencer has spoken to include the Property and Freedom Society,[67] the American Renaissance conference,[68] and the HL Mencken Club.[69] In November 2016, an online petition to prevent Spencer from speaking at Texas A&M University on December 6, 2016, was signed by thousands of students, employees, and alumni.[70] A protest and a university-organized counter-event were held to coincide with Spencer's event.[71]

On January 20, 2017, Spencer attended the inauguration of Donald Trump. As he was giving an impromptu interview on a nearby street afterwards, a masked man punched Spencer in the face, then fled.[72][73] A video of the incident was posted online, leading to divergent views on whether the attack was appropriate.[74]

Shortly after the violent Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August 2017, the University of Florida denied Spencer's request for a September 2017 speaking opportunity, citing public safety grounds after opposition from students and locals of Gainesville, Florida.[75] Due to safety reasons, he was also denied speaking requests at Louisiana State University and Michigan State University in August 2017.[76][77] In September 2017, Cameron Padgett, who tried to book Spencer, sued MSU; he was represented by Kyle Bristow, an MSU alumnus.[78][79]

On August 16, during a television interview with Israeli Channel 2 anchor Danny Kushmaro, Spencer claimed that "Jews are vastly over-represented in... 'the establishment', that is, Ivy League educated people who really determine policy".[3] Inspired by Israel's example as an exclusionary ethnic state,[80] he described his political position as "a white Zionist", as he wants white people "to have a secure homeland for us and ourselves".[3]

After the University of Florida's August 2017 denial of Spencer's request to speak the following month, Floridian lawyer Gary Edinger threatened to sue the university for violating the First Amendment by prohibiting Spencer from speaking despite being a publicly funded institution. The university subsequently reached an agreement with Edinger allowing Spencer to speak on October 19, 2017.[81] Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency for Alachua County on October 16, saying: "I find that the threat of a potential emergency is imminent" as a result of Spencer's appearance.[61][82]

On October 19, 2017, Spencer spoke at the Curtis M. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts on university grounds. In addition to Spencer, the speakers included Eli Mosley of Identity Evropa, a white supremacist group from California, and Mike Enoch, a white nationalist blogger.[83][84] The event's security costs reportedly amounted to an estimated $600,000.[85] It drew about 2,500 protestors, vastly outnumbering Spencer's supporters.[86][87]

The speech, which was Spencer's first public appearance after the Charlottesville rally, was disrupted by loud protests.[88][89][90] When drowned out by chants from the audience, he grew visibly frustrated, stating that the protestors were interfering with his freedom of speech. He added: "You are all engaged in what's known as the heckler's veto." According to Clay Calvert, director of the Marion B. Brechner First Amendment Project at the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications, non-violent protesting, booing and suggesting that the speaker leave was not a heckler's veto in law. The speech and the concurrent protests were largely peaceful.[87][91]

Later that day, three of Spencer's supporters were arrested on felony charges following an alleged discharge of a firearm, directed at protestors leaving the event. The three suspects were residents of Texas who had travelled to Florida to hear Spencer speak. According to the Gainesville Police Department, they had shouted "Hail Hitler" and gave Nazi salutes immediately before the alleged attack. Authorities said that two of the suspects had known links to extremist groups.[92] The men had participated in the August 2017 Unite the Right rally, where Spencer had been scheduled to speak.[93][94] All three were charged with attempted homicide.[95]

In the aftermath of the October 19 events, Ohio State University declined Spencer's request to allow him to speak on campus, citing "substantial risk to public safety". In response, a lawyer representing Spencer's associate and organizer of his speaking tour filed a lawsuit against the university.[26]

In 2013, a dispute at a ski club in Whitefish, Montana, drew public attention to Spencer and his political views.[96]

The National Policy Institute think tank, AlternativeRight.com, and Radix Journal all use the same mailing address in Whitefish, Montana.[97]

In 2014, a pro-tolerance group affiliated with the Montana Human Rights Network rallied against Spencer's residency in Whitefish. In response, the city council approved a non-discrimination resolution.[98]

In December 2016, Republican Representative Ryan Zinke, Republican Senator Steve Daines, Democratic Senator Jon Tester, Democratic Governor Steve Bullock and Republican Attorney General Tim Fox condemned a neo-Nazi march that had been planned for January 2017.[99] The community of Whitefish organized in opposition to the event, and the march never occurred.[100]

Also in December 2016, Spencer announced he was considering an independent run for Montana's at-large congressional district in the 2017 special election, although he ultimately did not enter the race.[101][102][103]

Spencer believes in white pride and the unification of a pan-European "white race" in a "potential racial empire" resembling the Roman Empire.[104][105][106] In an interview with CNN, he was criticized for an apparent inconsistency or lack of clarity in his definition of white, with his interviewer noting that Spencer defined Syrians as white in the context of Steve Jobs's role in developing the iPhone, but described them as a non-white presence in Europe in the context of the Syrian refugee crisis.[107]

In 2013, the Anti-Defamation League called Spencer a "leader" in white supremacist circles, and said that after leaving The American Conservative, he rejected conservatism, because he believed its adherents "can't or won't represent explicitly white interests".[108]

In one interview in which he was asked if he would condemn the Ku Klux Klan and Adolf Hitler, he refused by saying: "I'm not going to play this game", while stating that Hitler had "done things that I think are despicable", without elaborating on which things he was referring to.[109] Spencer also admires George Lincoln Rockwell, the founder of the American Nazi Party, for using "shock [as] a positive means to an end".[110]

In a 2016 interview for Time magazine, Spencer said he rejected white supremacy and the slavery of nonwhites, preferring to establish America as a white ethnostate.[111] He also advocates the creation of a white ethnostate in Europe that would be open to all "racial Europeans".[112][113][104][105][106]Some commentators see Spencer and other white nationalists as appropriating some elements socialist rhetoric to critique a "notion of capitalism centred on stereotypes of Jews" [114]

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, Spencer has advocated for a white homeland for a "dispossessed white race", and called for "peaceful ethnic cleansing" to halt the "deconstruction" of what he describes as "white culture".[10][11][12] To this end he has supported what he has called "the creation of a White Ethno-State on the North American continent", an "ideal" that he has regarded as a "reconstitution of the Roman Empire".[112][113] Prior to the UK vote to leave the EU, Spencer expressed support for the multi-national bloc "as a potential racial empire" and an alternative to "American hegemony", stating that he has "always been highly skeptical of so-called 'Euro-Skeptics'".[115]

Spencer supported Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election and called Trump's election "the victory of will", a phrase evoking the title of Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will (1935), a Nazi-era propaganda film.[9] Upon Trump's appointment of Steve Bannon as chief White House strategist and senior counselor, Spencer said Bannon would be in "the best possible position" to influence policy.[116]

During the 2016 United States presidential election, Spencer tweeted that women should not be allowed to make foreign policy.[117][118] He also stated in an interview with The Washington Post that his vision of America as a white ethnostate included women returning to traditional roles as childbearers and homemakers.[119][120] In October 2017, when asked his opinion on American women having the right to vote, he said: "I don't necessarily think that that's a great thing" after stating that he was "not terribly excited" about voting in general.[118]

Spencer opposes same-sex marriage,[121] which he has described as "unnatural" and a "non-issue", commenting that "very few gay men will find the idea of monogamy to their liking".[122]Despite his opposition to same-sex marriage, Spencer barred people with anti-gay views from the National Policy Institute's annual conference in 2015.[123]

Spencer supports legal access to abortion, in part because he believes it would reduce the number of black and Hispanic people, which he says would be a "great boon" to white people.[124] Spencer supports a national single-payer health care system because he believes it would benefit white people.[125][126]

Spencer is an atheist,[127] but believes the Christian church previously held some pragmatic value, as Spencer believes it helped unify the white population of Europe. He opposes traditional Christian values as a moral code, due to Christianity being a universalizing religion, rather than an ethnic religion. Spencer references his views on Christianity as being influenced by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche.[128][129][130] Citing Nietzsche's criticism of anti-Semitism and nationalism, Scott Galupo writing for The Week, Sean Illing for Vox, and Jordan Harris for The Courier-Journal have described Spencer's interpretation of Nietzsche's philosophy as incorrect.[131][132][128] Spencer's Radix Journal has promoted paganism, running titles such as "Why I am a pagan".[133] Spencer has also described himself as a "cultural Christian".[134]

Spencer states he voted for Democrat John Kerry over incumbent Republican George W. Bush during the 2004 United States presidential election, because Bush stood for "the war".[135]

Spencer is an advocate of the Fourteen Words, a white supremacist slogan, and has promoted it.[136] Despite his support, he has clarified that he'd prefer to merge the alt-right and alt-lite into one political force, claiming that "If I wanted to create a movement that was 1488 white nationalist, I would have done that".[137]

Spencer has advocated for the US pulling out of NATO, and called Russia the "sole white power in the world". His partner then Kouprianova, under her pen name Nina Byzantina referred to herself as a "Kremlin troll leader" and regularly aligned to Kremlin talking points, with ties to Alexander Dugin, a far-right ultranationalist Russian intellectual leader in the Eurasianism movement and writer of Foundations of Geopolitics. The webzine founded by Spencer in 2010, called Alternative Right, accepted direct contributor pieces from Dugin.[138]

In the late 2000s, Spencer was involved in the libertarian movement, supporting libertarian Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul[139] and hosting him at his discussion club, the Robert Taft Club.[140] Spencer later disavowed libertarianism as incompatible with white nationalism, and in 2017 he came into conflict with libertarians after reportedly attempting to "crash" an International Students for Liberty conference.[141] However, Spencer's disavowal notwithstanding, some commentators do see commonality between the alt-right and libertarianism.[139]

In 2010, Spencer moved to Whitefish, Montana. He says he splits his time between Whitefish and Arlington, Virginia,[112][142] although he has said he has lived in Whitefish for over 10 years and considers it home.[143] As of 2017 Spencer was renting a house in Alexandria, Virginia.[144]

Spencer married Nina Kouprianova in 2010, with whom he has two children.[145] Prior to this, Spencer's dating history included Asian women, which he has said predates his white nationalism, though this evaluation is disputed.[146]

He was separated from Kouprianova, who is Russian-Canadian,[147] in October 2016;[36] in April 2017, Spencer said he and his wife were not separated and were still together.[148] Kouprianova has translated several books written by Aleksandr Dugin, a Russian political analyst known for his fascist views.[149][150][151] The books were later published by Spencer's publishing house, Washington Summit Publishers.[152]

In June 2018, Spencer published the results of a DNA test by 23andMe, which showed him to have 99.5% European ancestry and 0.5% non-European ancestry.[153]

In October 2018, it was reported that Richard Spencer's wife Kouprianova had filed for divorce, and accused Spencer in court papers of being "physically, verbally, and emotionally abusive" toward her. She stated that Spencer had repeatedly encouraged her to kill herself, and quoted him as saying, "The only language women understand is violence". Spencer has denied being an abusive person in his comments to the Associated Press.[154]

Elevating the Human Condition – Humanity+ What does it …

What does it mean to be human in a technologically enhanced world? Humanity+ is a 501(c)3 international nonprofit membership organization that advocates the ethical use of technology, such as artificial intelligence, to expand human capacities. In other words, we want people to be better than well. This is the goal of transhumanism.

Humannity+ Advocates for Safe and Ethical Use: Technologies that intervene with human physiology for curing disease and repairing injury have accelerated to a point in which they also can increase human performance outside the realms of what is considered to be normal for humans. These technologies are referred to as emerging and speculative and include artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, nanomedicine, biotechnology, genetic engineering, stem cell cloning, and transgenesis, for example. Other technologies that could extend and expand human capabilities outside physiology include artificial intelligence, artificial general intelligence, robotics, and brain-computer integration, which form the domain of bionics, uploading, and could be used for developing whole body prosthetics. Because these technologies, and their respective sciences and strategic models, such as blockchain, would take the human beyond the normal state of existence, society, including bioethicists and others who advocate the safe use of technology, have shown concern and uncertainties about the downside of these technologies and possible problematic and dangerous outcomes for our species.

Economic collapse – Wikipedia

Economic collapse is any of a broad range of bad economic conditions, ranging from a severe, prolonged depression with high bankruptcy rates and high unemployment (such as the Great Depression of the 1930s), to a breakdown in normal commerce caused by hyperinflation (such as in Weimar Germany in the 1920s), or even an economically caused sharp rise in the death rate and perhaps even a decline in population (such as in countries of the former USSR in the 1990s).[1][2][3]

Often economic collapse is accompanied by social chaos, civil unrest and a breakdown of law and order.

There are few well documented cases of economic collapse. One of the best documented cases of collapse or near collapse is the Great Depression, the causes of which are still being debated.

"To understand the Great Depression is the Holy Grail of macroeconomics."[4] Ben Bernanke (1995)

Bernanke's comment addresses the difficulty of identifying specific causes when many factors may each have contributed to various extents.

Past economic collapses have had political as well as financial causes. Persistent trade deficits, wars, revolutions, famines, depletion of important resources, and government-induced hyperinflation have been listed[by whom?] as causes.

In some cases blockades and embargoes caused severe hardships that could be considered economic collapse. In the U.S. the Embargo Act of 1807 forbade foreign trade with warring European nations, causing a severe depression in the heavily international trade-dependent economy, especially in the shipping industry and port cities, ending a great boom.[5] The Union blockade of the Confederate States of America severely damaged the South's plantation owners; however, the South had little economic development. The blockade of Germany during World War I led to starvation of hundreds of thousands of Germans but did not cause economic collapse, at least until the political turmoil and the hyperinflation that followed. For both the Confederacy and Weimar Germany, the cost of the war was worse than the blockade. Many Southern plantation owners had their bank accounts confiscated and also all had to free their slaves without compensation. The Germans had to make war reparations.

Following defeat in war, the conquering country or faction may not accept paper currency of the vanquished, and the paper becomes worthless. (This was the situation of the Confederacy.) Government debt obligations, primarily bonds, are often restructured and sometimes become worthless. Therefore, there is a tendency for the public to hold gold and silver during times of war or crisis.

Hyperinflation, wars, and revolutions cause hoarding of essentials and a disruption of markets. In some past hyperinflations, workers were paid daily and immediately spent their earnings on essential goods, which they often used for barter. Store shelves were frequently empty.

More stable foreign currencies, silver and gold (usually coins) were held and exchanged in place of local currency.[6] The minting country of precious metal coins tended to be relatively unimportant. Jewelry was also used as a medium of exchange. Alcoholic beverages were also used for barter.[1]

Desperate individuals sold valuable possessions to buy essentials or traded them for gold and silver.[6]

In the German hyperinflation, stocks held much more of their value than paper currency.[6] Bonds denominated in the inflating currency may lose most or all value.

During severe financial crises, sometimes governments close banks. Depositors may be unable to withdraw their money for long periods, as was true in the United States in 1933 under the Emergency Banking Act. Withdrawals may be limited. Bank deposits may be involuntarily converted to government bonds or to a new currency of lesser value in foreign exchange.[7]

During financial crises and even less severe situations, capital controls are often imposed to restrict or prohibit transferring or personally taking money, securities or other valuables out of a country. To end hyperinflations a new currency is typically issued. The old currency is often not worth exchanging for new.

The Taiping Rebellion followed by internal warfare, famines and epidemics caused the deaths of over 100 million and greatly reduced the economy.[8]

Following Germany's defeat in World War I, political instability resulted in murders and assassinations of hundreds of political figures. (See: German Revolution of 19181919 and Kapp Putsch) Germany's finances were heavily strained by the war and reparations in accordance with the Treaty of Versailles. Unable to raise enough in taxes to run the government and make war reparations, the government resorted to printing money which resulted in great hyperinflation. One book on the hyperinflation, which includes quotes and a few first hand accounts, is When Money Dies.[6]

The hyperinflation eventually ended, it cleared government debt at the cost of the citizens' savings. Some believe that the hyperinflation of 1923 has helped fuel the eventual rise of the Nazi party and the rise of Hitler to power in 1933.[9] Economists, however, tend to attribute Hitler's rise to the Deflation and the Great Depression beginning in 1929.[10][11] Paul Krugman concluded that the 1923 hyperinflation didnt bring Hitler to power; it was the Brning deflation and depression.[12] Before 1929 the Nazi party was actually in decline with less than 3% of votes in the German federal election of 1928 (see election results of the Nazi Party).

While arguably not a true economic collapse, the decade of the 1930s witnessed the most severe worldwide economic contraction since the start of the Industrial Revolution. In the US, the Depression began in the summer of 1929, soon followed by the stock market crash of October 1929. American stock prices continued to decline in fits and starts until they hit bottom in July 1932. In the first quarter of 1933, the banking system broke down: asset prices had collapsed, bank lending had largely ceased, a quarter of the American work force was unemployed, and real GDP per capita in 1933 was 29% below its 1929 value.[13] The ensuing rapid recovery was interrupted by a major recession in 1937-38. The USA fully recovered by 1941, the eve of its entry in World War II, which gave rise to a boom as dramatic as the Depression that preceded it.

While there were numerous bank failures during the Great Depression, most banks in developed countries survived, as did most currencies and governments. The most significant monetary change during the depression was the demise of the gold standard by most nations that were on it. In the U.S., the dollar was redeemable in gold until 1933 when U.S. citizens were forced to turn over their gold (except for 5 ounces) for fiat currency (See: Executive Order 6102) and were forbidden to own monetary gold for the next four decades. Subsequently, gold was revalued from $20.67 per ounce to $35 per ounce. U.S. dollars remained redeemable in gold by foreigners until 1971. Gold ownership was legalized in the U.S. in 1974, but not with legal tender status.

As bad as the Great Depression was, it took place during a period of high productivity growth, which caused real wages to rise. The high unemployment was partly a result of the productivity gains, allowing the number of hours of the standard work week to be cut while restoring economic output to previous levels after a few years. Workers who remained employed saw their real hourly earnings rise because wages remained constant while prices fell; however, overall earnings remained relatively constant because of the reduced work week.[14] Converting the dollar to a fiat currency and devaluing against gold ensured the end of deflation and created inflation, which made the high debt accumulated during the 1920s boom easier to repay, although some of the debt was written off.

During the 1980s, the Eastern Bloc, which relied on a stagnant form of planned economy, experienced a decade-long period of stagflation, and eventual collapse from which it did not recover, culminating with revolutions and the fall of communist regimes throughout Central and Eastern Europe and eventually in the Soviet Union. The process was accompanied by a gradual but important easing of restrictions on economic and political behaviour in the late 1980s, including the satellite states.

The collapse in the USSR was characterized by an increase in the death rate, especially by men over 50, with alcoholism a major cause. There was also an increase in violent crime and murder.[1] The Russian population peaked in the 1990s and is lower today than two decades ago, as the demographics of Russia show.

A firsthand account of conditions during the economic collapse was told by Dmitry Orlov, a former USSR citizen who became a US citizen but returned to Russia for a time during the crisis.[1]

After more or less stabilizing after the disintegration of the USSR, a severe financial crisis took place in the Russian Federation in August 1998. It was caused by low oil prices and government expenditure cuts after the end of the Cold War. Other nations of the former Soviet Union also experienced economic collapse, although a number of crises also involved armed conflicts, like in the break-away region Chechnya. The default by Russia on its government bonds in 1998 led to the collapse of highly leveraged hedge fund Long Term Capital Management, which threatened the world financial system. The U.S. Federal Reserve organized a bailout of LTCM which turned it over to a banking consortium.

In Latvia, GDP declined more than 20% from 2008 to 2010, one of the worst recessions on record.[15]In Greece, GDP declined more than 26% starting in 2008.[16]

Since 2013, Venezuela has been suffering an economic crisis. It's the worst in Venezuelan history, caused by the economic policies of the president, Nicols Maduro the successor of Hugo Chvez, the fall in oil prices and internal and external factors. Since 2014, Venezuela's GDP has been in recession, falling more 40%.[17] The economy has collapsed,[18] causing shortages of basics goods, economic downturn and hyperinflation since 2017.[19] Also, there are drastic increases in the crime, corruption, poverty and hunger.[citation needed] Thousands of Venezuelans have fled to neighboring countries.[20]

Some economists (i.e. the Austrian School, in particular Ludwig von Mises), believe that government intervention and over-regulation of the economy can lead to the conditions for collapse. In particular, Austrian theoretical research has been focused on such problems emanating from socialist forms of economic organization. This however is not a theory of economic collapse involving the breakdown of freely functioning financial markets; rather, the focus is on economic malfunction and crisis emanating from state control.

However, many Austrian economists also subscribe to what is called the "ABCT" ,or Austrian Business Cycle Theory. Economist Roger Garrison describes the bubble as merely a form of unsustainable boom (not a theory of all depression), as Mises and F.A. Hayek did, despite their disagreements on the exact workings of it.[21] The essential part of the theory is that it is inherently unsustainable to try to manipulate monetary policy to boost both investment and consumption; usually through interest rate manipulation and bond-buying and such. The "boom" was created by "malinvestments," as Mises called them; business decisions that are bad investments and unsustainable in the long run because lowering interest rates by padding the supply of money and credit will only work in the short-term, but will ultimately collapse because the government can only hold down interest rates so long before fear of inflation kicks in (and deflation comes at the peak of the business cycle), or they go into hyperinflation (which is completely outside the realm of the ABCT).

In "The Science of Political Economy", published in 1905, Henry George argued that because land is a scarce resource, it is particularly subject to speculation. George uses "land" to refer to ownership of a right to use a resource. It includes mining, water, fishing, and timber rights, road and rail rights-of way,and some patents. Today, we would add to "land" such items astaxi medallions, telecommunications licenses and pollution "rights".Henry George followed his analysis with a remedy: eliminate all taxesexcept for a tax on land values. The "single tax", as it later became known, wouldinvigorate the economy by breaking up large idle holdings, making land available tothose who would use it. And it would suck the air out of speculative bubbles, dampingthe boom and bust cycle. Henry George died before the publication of the series of books, and parts of the book are nothing more than an outline, essays and lectures as noted on the cover page. He also stated that the expansion of the money supply, should be 1 percent or thereabout, to maintain healthy growth, and discourage saving, and encourage spending, and he wanted a debt free currency. (Our current currency, as of 1913 is birthed by debt).[22]

Romanian American economist Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen, a progenitor in economics and the paradigm founder of ecological economics, has argued that the carrying capacity of Earththat is, Earth's capacity to sustain human populations and consumption levels is bound to decrease sometime in the future as Earth's finite stock of mineral resources is presently being extracted and put to use; and consequently, that the world economy as a whole is heading towards an inevitable future collapse, leading to the demise of human civilisation itself.[23]

Georgescu-Roegen is basing his pessimistic prediction on the two following considerations:

Taken together, the Industrial Revolution in Britain in the second half of the 18th century has unintentionally thrust man's economy into a long, never-to-return overshoot-and-collapse trajectory with regard to the Earth's mineral stock. The world economy will continue growing until its inevitable and final collapse in the future. From that point on, ever deepening scarcities will aggravate social conflict throughout the globe and ultimately spell the end of mankind itself, Georgescu-Roegen conjectures.

Georgescu-Roegen was the paradigm founder of ecological economics and is also considered the main intellectual figure influencing the degrowth movement. Consequently, much work in these fields is devoted to discussing the existential impossibility of allocating Earth's finite stock of mineral resources evenly among an unknown number of present and future generations. This number of generations is likely to remain unknown to us, as there is no way or only little way of knowing in advance if or when mankind will ultimately face extinction. In effect, any conceivable intertemporal allocation of the stock will inevitably end up with universal economic decline at some future point.[24]:253256[25]:165[26]:168171[27]:150153[28]:106109[29]:546549[30]:142145 [31]

AltRight.com was founded by white nationalist Richard Spencer, who coined the racist movements name. The website has remained online, even as web hosting companies ended their business with other racist right sites like The Daily Stormer following a deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia last August. But on Thursday, domain registrar GoDaddy finally pulled the plug on AltRight.com, giving Spencers website 48 hours to transfer its domain to another web host or lose it.

GoDaddy has previously cited freedom of expression while allowing sites like Spencers to use their services.

GoDaddy does not condone content that advocates expressions of hate, racism or bigotry, GoDaddy told The Daily Beast in a statement on AltRight.coms removal. However, we generally do not take action on complaints that would constitute censorship of content and that represents the exercise of freedom of speech and expression on the Internet. While we detest the sentiment of such sites, we support a free and open Internet and, similar to the principles of free speech, that sometimes means allowing such tasteless, ignorant content.

But AltRight.com, which published white supremacist articles daily, crossed a line, the company said. In instances where a site goes beyond the mere exercise of these freedoms, however, and crosses over to promoting, encouraging, or otherwise engaging in specific acts of violence against any person, we will take action. It is our determination that altright.com crossed the line and encouraged and promoted violence in a direct and threatening manner. As is our standard process when dealing with these incidents, we gave the customer 48 hours to transfer the domain elsewhere.

The move comes fewer than two weeks after the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law sent GoDaddy a letter arguing that AltRight.com violated GoDaddys terms of service, which prohibit illegal activity and the promotion of violence. The Lawyers Committee pointed to a recent AltRight.com article that claimed U.S. border guards should be allowed to engage in lawlessness and savagery against immigrants. Superiors would do well to turn their heads to a bit of brutality and vengeance by our guys on the border, perhaps even tolerating a massacre here or there, the article claimed.

The Lawyers Committee also pointed to AltRight.coms comment section, which hosted comments calling for extreme violence against women and minorities.

GoDaddys decision comes at a difficult time for Spencer, who recently cancelled his disastrous college speaking tour, and turned to begging supporters for legal funds to support him through a major lawsuit against him and other alt-right figures. Facebook also recently deleted Spencers Facebook page, and online funding platforms like WePay announced they would no longer allow him to use their services.

If Spencer wants to keep AltRight.com online, he might follow The Daily Stormers playbook. The Stormer, a neo-Nazi site that was ousted from GoDaddy and other web hosts in August, spent months bouncing between URLs in search for a company that would host its hate speech. After a stint on the dark web, the Stormer is now using an obscure web host that appears to do much of its business with Chinese websites.

On Twitter, where Spencer still has a profile, the white nationalist lashed out at GoDaddy. He retweeted the Twitter account for Gab, a social media platform that markets toward alt-righters who feel censored elsewhere.

You are horrible people, Gab wrote at GoDaddy. This is what authoritarian fascism actually looks like.

Richard Spencer’s Website Has Been Pulled Offline By GoDaddy

Altright.com, the infamous website founded by white nationalist Richard Spencer, is no longer accessible Thursday morning after it was taken down by its host, GoDaddy.

In a statement provided to BuzzFeed News, a spokesperson for GoDaddy said that Spencer was given 48 hours to transfer the Altright.com domain to a different host before it was removed.

"In instances where a site goes beyond the mere exercise of these freedoms, however, and crosses over to promoting, encouraging, or otherwise engaging in specific acts of violence against any person, we will take action," GoDaddy's statement read. "It is our determination that altright.com crossed the line and encouraged and promoted violence in a direct and threatening manner."

Spencer told BuzzFeed News that he has not yet found a new host for the site.

"We're working on solving the problem, and solving it in a permanent way. So this might take some time," Spencer said.

The removal of Altright.com comes only a few weeks after Facebook removed two Facebook pages associated with Spencer. The takedown was first reported by Vice, which said the pages were removed after the outlet contacted Facebook about hate groups using the platform.

The pages belonged to Spencer's National Policy Institute, which describes itself as "dedicated to the heritage [of] people of European descent," and his website Altright.com.

A Facebook spokesperson told BuzzFeed News that it relies on both people and technology to review content and that it takes action when hate groups are flagged to the company. Spencer also maintained a profile on Instagram, also owned by Facebook. The profile was taken down shortly after BuzzFeed News asked Facebook about it.

Twitter has yet to ban Spencer.

Tech platforms have been locked in a back-and-forth with far-right internet communities since the deadly "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, last summer. The Daily Stormer, an infamous neo-Nazi website, has continued to have similar issues with hosting. GoDaddy suspended the site's hosting the same week that Google canceled the site's domain registration in August last year.

The loss of Spencer's internet hosting also comes only two days after he was removed from the WePay online payment service, effectively cutting his main revenue stream. Spencer is also currently embroiled in a lawsuit following the events of the "Unite the Right" rally. Unable to find a lawyer who would defend him, Spencer is representing himself.

In reaction to the news that Spencer's site had gone down on Thursday, the Twitter account for the far-right social network Gab summed up the issue currently facing many far-right internet personalities like Spencer.

Food supplements – European Commission

As an addition to a normal diet, food business operators market food supplements, which are concentrated sources of nutrients (or other substances) with a nutritional or physiological effect. Such food supplements can be marketed in dose form, such as pills, tablets, capsules, liquids in measured doses, etc.

The objective of the harmonised rules on those products in Directive 2002/46/EC is to protect consumers against potential health risks from those products and to ensure that they are not provided with misleading information.

With respect to the safety of food supplements, the Directive lays down a harmonised list of vitamins and minerals that may be added for nutritional purposes in food supplements (in Annex I to the Directive). Annex II of the Directive contains a list of permitted sources (vitamin and mineral substances) from which those vitamins and minerals may be manufactured.

This list has been amended by the following Regulations and Directive to include additional substances:

The trade of products containing vitamins and minerals not listed in Annex II has been prohibited from the 1st of August 2005.

Directive 2002/46/EC has been aligned with the new Regulatory Procedure with scrutiny by Regulation (EC) No 1137/2008.

Directive 2002/46/EC on food supplements envisages the setting of maximum and minimum amounts of vitamins and minerals in supplements via the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed ( PAFF Committee) procedure.

The Commission has issued a Discussion Paper on the setting of maximum and minimum amounts for vitamins and minerals in foodstuffs , which identified the main issues to be considered in this exercise and originated a set of Responses.

Although the Commission has consulted extensively with EU countries and interested stakeholders on the issue, no proposal has not yet been presented due to the complex nature of the issue and the divergent views that were expressed. All the available data on the potential effects on economic operators and consumers of the setting of maximum amounts of vitamins and minerals in foods, including food supplements, will be taken into account. Every effort will be made to ensure that the maximum amounts set will take into account the concerns expressed by all interested parties.

The EC commissioned a study on the use of substances with nutritional or physiological effects other than vitamins and minerals in food supplements.

Taking into account this study and other available information, the Commission - in accordance with the requirement set out in Article 4(8) of Directive 2002/46/EC on food supplements - has prepared a report to the Council and the European Parliament on the use of substances other than vitamins and minerals in food supplements.

The report is accompanied by two Commission staff working documents.

EU countries may, for monitoring purposes, request notification to their competent authority of the placing on the market in their territory of a food supplement product in accordance with Article 10 of the Directive. The list of competent authorities may be found here:

BioShock (Video Game) – TV Tropes

"There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man, there's always a city..."

Andrew Ryan

BioShock is a video game series developed by Irrational Games (also known as 2K Boston for a short while before reverting back to the old name). The series acts as a Spiritual Successor to the System Shock games, and as such are technically First Person Shooters with Stat Grinding and Survival Horror elements. Fighting is done primarily with guns, but also with various element-themed mutant abilities.

BioShock takes place in an alternative history Bio Punk with a heavy dose of Diesel Punk. Similarly to System Shock, the plot unfolds in a Soiled City on a Hill, now under the control of a lunatic with a God complex. Again, the general backstory of the city elaborated on in Apocalyptic Logs scattered about. There are heavy ethical or philosophical themes in the games this time around: The first two chapters meditate on the ethics of gene editing, Objectivism versus Collectivism, and innate human power-drive which overrides good sense, among other things.

The third chapter deals with issues such as American Exceptionalism, interventionism, fundamentalism, secularism, and a great many more "isms", plus the tendency of revolutions to replace one tyrant with another.

There are three games in the series so far:

An Updated Re-release of Infinite containing all DLCs came out in November 2014. Another rerelease compiling all three games (minus the multiplayer elements of BioShock 2) came out on September 13, 2016 for the X Box One and PlayStation 4, and on September 15 for PC.

"So far away from your family, from your friends, from everything you ever loved. But, for some reason you like it here. You feel something you can't quite put your finger on. Think about it for a second and maybe the word will come to you: nostalgia."

Brute Splicer: You ain't natural!

Female Splicer: Freak!

Another Female Splicer: YOU'RE INSANE!

Andrew Ryan: In the end, the only thing that matters to me, is me. And the only thing that matters to you, is you.

Mary: Capital punishment! In Rapture! This isn't what I signed up for!

Jim: Now hold on there, pretty lady! The only people who face capital punishment in Rapture are smugglers. And that's because they put everything we've worked for at risk. Imagine if the Soviets found out about our wonderful city, or even the U.S. government! Our secrecy is our shield.

Mary: A little capital punishment is a small price to pay to protect all of our freedoms.

Jim: Now you're talking, Mary!

Baby Jane: I used to be beautiful, what happened to me?

Gatherer's Garden machine: My daddy's smarter than Einstein, stronger than Hercules, and can light a fire with a snap of his fingers. Are you as good as my daddy, mister?

Andrew Ryan: I know this facility is vital to the preservation of secrecy in Rapture. But seeing myself transformed into that... lurching, waxen nightmare... Do children truly respond to this? Still, I spoke to a young man exiting the park after the grand opening, asking him what, if anything, he had learned here. He said his chores didn't seem so bad anymore - as long as mother wouldn't send him to the surface.

The game presents the Little Sisters as a moral choice, but the way it reacts to those choices makes it less moral and more practical - if you harvest one, you get more ADAM right now. If you rescue one, you get less ADAM immediately - but for every three Little Sisters you rescue, you get a gift at the nearest plasmid vendor containing only a little less ADAM than you would have gained by harvesting, plus a couple plasmids or gene tonics, including a few you can't get any other way. So the only real reason to harvest Little Sisters is just because you're a bastard. The sequel is mildly better in this regard: you get a fair bit more ADAM for harvesting than rescuing, about three entire rescued Sisters worth.

Atlas: Why do they wear those masks? Maybe there's a part of them that remembers how they used to be, how they used to look. And they're ashamed.

"We all make choices, but in the end, our choices make us."

Vintage baby names that need to make a comeback

From Wonderland onward, Alice has been an iconic name, symbolizing everything from psychedelic rabbit holes to key figures in contemporary literature. In addition to Lewis Carroll's heroine, there's novelist Alice Walker of The Color Purple fame, as well as Alice B. Toklas, partner of iconic poet Gertrude Stein. To say nothing of rocker Alice Cooper and groundbreaking grunge band Alice in Chains, if that's more your speed.

Technically, Alice is actually a nickname in itself, and one with interestingly mixed roots. Though it hails from the German Adelaide, which also appears on this list, it's an anglicized derivative of the French name Aalis.

Alice was the number 25 female name on the Nameberry site as of 2017. Though its own contemporary derivatives like Alyssa and Alicia are far more popular, Alice is rapidly coming back into the mainstream. Actress and writer Tina Fey and musician Jeff Richmondchose it as a name for their daughter, as didactor Tom Cavanagh and his wife, Sports Illustrated photo editorMaureen Grise.

The name is both a classic choice and a unique choice, and if you're choosing it for its Lewis Carrollian associations, you can at least rest assured that there's no chance your baby is going to turn into a pig, like the babe that the fictional Alice was tasked with caring for.

Track: 1Proteomics from Discovery to Function

Proteomicsis an emerging field that has been highly enabled by the human genome project. Proteins are the products of genes, the machinery of the cells in our bodies. When genes are disrupted, theproteinsare also affected. Whenpathogensinfect us, causing disease, proteins play a key role in signaling the presence and ridding us of these invaders. Almost every process that occurs in our cells from the metabolization of simple sugar to the division of cells is dependent on proteins for smooth operation. In general, proteomicsseeks to detect and quantify as many proteins as possible.

Track: 2Mass Spectrometry in Proteome Research

Mass spectrometry(MS) - based proteomics allows the sensitive and accurate quantification of almost complete proteomes of complex biological fluids and tissues. At the moment, however, the routinely usage of MS-based proteomics is prevented and complicated by the very complex work flow comprising sample preparation, chromatography, MS measurement followed by data processing and evaluation. The new technologies, products and assays developed byPrecision Proteomicscould help enabling and establishing mass spectrometry (MS) - based proteomics in academic andpharmaceutical proteomicsresearch as well as in clinical diagnostics.

Molecular Medicinepromotes the thoughtful of biological mechanism of disease at the cellular and molecular levels for enhanced diagnoses, treatment, and prevention of disease. Proteomics plays an important role in medical research and molecular medicine, such as in drug discovery anddiagnostics, because of the link between proteins, genes anddiseases, and it is considered to be the next step in modern biology. Proteomics is dynamic compared to genomics because it changes constantly to reflect the cells environment. The main objectives in the arena of proteomics are; identifying all proteins, analyse differentialprotein expressionin different samples, characterise proteins by identifying and studying their function and cellular localisation, and recognize protein interaction networks.

Track: 8Proteomics in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Biochemistryis the study of the structure and function of biological molecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates and lipids. Biochemistry is also used to describe techniques suited to understanding the interactions and functions ofbiological moleculesand it is a laboratory based science that brings together biology and chemistry. By using chemical knowledge and techniques, biochemists can understand and solve biological problems. Biochemistry focuses on processes happening at a molecular level and it focuses on whats happening inside our cells. It also looks at how cells communicate with each other, for example during growth or fighting illness. Medicine is a broad category but relates to biochemistry on many levels. Doctors and nurses give drugs to patients to help cure a disease or prevent it. This is since when thatdrugis added to the human system, it alters how other chemicals in the body function, resulting in disease prevention or recovery.

Proteomics attribute to the study of proteomes, but is also used to characterize the techniques used to determine the complete set of proteins of an organism or system, such as protein purification and MS. Proteomics is a developing field that has been deeply enabled by the human genome project. Proteins which are the products of genes, the machinery of the cells in our bodies. When genes are disturbed, the proteins are also damaged. When pathogens infect us, causing disease, proteins play a major role in signaling the presence & ridding us of these invaders. Almost every process which that occurs in our cells from the metabolization of clean sugar to the distribution of cells is dependent on proteins for smooth operation. In general, proteomics seeks to distinguish & quantify as many proteins as possible likewise Molecular Medicine promotes the understanding of biological mechanism of disease at the cellular and molecular levels for better diagnoses, treatment, and prevention of disease. Proteomics plays an important role in medical research and molecular medicine, such as in drug discovery and diagnostics, because of the link between proteins, genes and diseases, and it is considered to be the next step in modern biology.

There are numerous advances in this proteomics innovation, especially in the field of sub-atomic science. New proteomics and genomics advancements and creations could be utilized for ailment particular biomarker revelation and to screen tolerant reaction to the treatment. Proteomics might likewise set up new, atomic order of the malady. Applying genomic and proteomic strategies to body liquids (serum, cerebrospinal liquid, pee, and so on.) and tissue concentrates would put profitable goal diagnostic force in the hands of the clinician however approval of those techniques is an imperative issue. The quick extension of the analytic apparatuses taking into account advancements in proteomic and genomic advances can be essential for the improvement of customized solution. As a science that studies interactions between the molecular components that carry out the various biological processes in living cells, an important idea in molecular biology states that information flow in organisms follows a one-way street: Genes are transcribed into RNA, and RNA is translated into proteins.

SolidarityNYC

Visibility:

Our map of New York Citys solidarity economy, available above, is heralded as a model for similar efforts around the world. Weve come a long way from our first version back in 2009, but the purpose remains the same: render the solidarity economyvisible to organizers, neighbors, researchers, policymakers, and to the solidarity economy groups themselves. Mapping keeps our organizing and research in touch with changes in the field and presents a cohesive and tangible framework for those seeking examples of community-led economic development in our city. We practice cooperation with others seeking to map their communities by sharing our data as members of the Data Commons Cooperative and sharing our website code (without a fee) with aligned groups. Weve also inspired liberal and progressive groups, such as the Freelancers Union, to start their own mapping projects.

Our short films, Portraits of a Solidarity Economy, are an effort to put a human face on an abstract economic concept. Each one explores a single individuals involvement with a solidarity economy organizationa worker co-op, intentional community, barter network, community development credit union, food co-op, or participatory budgeting initiative. We also created a short animation explaining the solidarity economy. They have been featured at film festivals and teach-ins alike, and can be viewed without a fee on this page.

In 2015 we are retooling our map to provide more comprehensive information about the organizations and models represented and are seeking to create longer films emphasizing more in-depth analysis of how solidarity economy organizations work.

Our research and organizing grew out of our efforts to map the many organizations in the city. As we attended sectoral network meetings it became clear there are many shared challenges for solidarity economy organizations, but that no study had been conducted of the New York City groups we were meeting. In 2012 we launched a Deep Listening and Movement Building project to identify what the common challenges and goals are across sectors, and to examine how groups were either already cooperating or how they would like to in the future. This led to the report Growing A Resilient City: Possibilities for Collaboration in New York Citys Solidarity Economy, which outlined substantial overlap in communications, technical assistance, financing, and governance issues. In February 2013 we gathered our 32 respondents and additional organizations for an evening of discussion about our findings and what the potential next steps could be. There was a great deal of enthusiasm for moving ahead with plans for greater cooperation, but it had become clear to SolidarityNYC that we could not properly support this level of organizing without financial support.

In 2013 we solicited and received our first substantial funding for the continuation of our movement building process, which in 2013-2014 allowed us to support a steering committee of solidarity economy leaders who hosted focus groups to dig deeper into the needs and goals of these groups. We are currently working with these groups to draft a proposal for a new organization, a multi-stakeholder cooperative to support New York Citys solidarity economy, called the Cooperative Economy Alliance of New York City, or CEANYC (pronounced scenic.) This organization will be independent of SolidarityNYC, and our collective will join as a member under the appropriate stakeholder class once it is launched.

We are currently engaged in a new Deep Listening and Movement Building project, this time focused on community-based social justice organizations engaged or interested in engaging in solidarity economy practices or community-led economic development. We hope to better understand the principles, goals, and culture of these organizations to better support cooperation and connection between them and the traditional solidarity economy groups.

Weve been told by several visitors that our website is the best English language solidarity economy site available. Were proud to offer the map and films as educational resources, but were also committed to bringing our analysis and listening strategies to others interested in this work. We regularly provide solidarity economy workshops, without a fee, for local groups and national groups ranging from students to philanthropists. Because of our vast local and national network, we are also available to convene technical assistance gatherings when movement building opportunities arise. For example, during Occupy Wall Street we hosted an Occupy Workplace Democracy event in conjunction with the Eastern Conference on Workplace Democracy and the Fund for Democratic Communities that included presentations by seasoned cooperators, co-op attorneys, and co-op financiers for five new New York City co-ops emerging from Occupy.

Last April we hosted a dialogue between Jessica Gordon Nembhard and a local African American solidarity economy organization, Black Womens Blueprint, about the legacy of African American cooperation in the U.S. and New York City. In 2015 we are interested in creating new resources, including a handbook and organizing training, to promote youth-based regional solidarity economy development, but this is dependent on financial support. If you are interested in a workshop, training, or presentation on the solidarity economy or a related topic please email us at info (at) solidaritynyc (dot) org.
