Cipla gets ready to bring Covid-19 treatment to SA – Bizcommunity.com

Cipla through a landmark agreement with Gilead Sciences Inc., was granted a license to manufacture and distribute the antiviral medicine, remdesivir, in 127 countries, including South Africa. As many of these countries are low-income countries and emerging markets that face obstacles in accessing healthcare, Cipla will expand supply to several sub-Saharan African countries.

This authorisation for emergency use was granted by the FDA on the basis that SARS-CoV-2 can cause a serious or life-threatening disease or condition, their view that the known and potential benefits of remdesivir outweigh the known and potential risks, and the fact that there is currently no adequate approved alternative treatment available for Covid-19.

Remdesivir is also approved for emergency and compassionate use in India, Japan and Singapore on similar grounds. More recently, on 25 June 2020, remdesivir was recommended for a conditional marketing authorisation by the European Medicines Agency, a regulatory mechanism to facilitate early access to medicines that fulfil an unmet medical need, including in emergency situations in response to public health threats such as the current Covid-19 pandemic.

Caring for life

CEO of Cipla South Africa, Paul Miller, says: "As part of our ethos of Caring for Life, Cipla always aims to ensure that everyone has access to life-saving medication. In much the same way as Cipla pioneered affordable medication during the height of the HIV crisis about two decades ago and helped to save the lives of millions of people, we're committed to help find a solution in the fight against this unprecedented global pandemic."

Cipla will, therefore, ensure that the price of its remdesivir will be less than or similar to prices offered in other emerging markets, facilitating access to this medicine. Cipla commenced manufacturing of remdesivir last week on a dedicated line at one of its FDA-, WHO- and SAHPRA-approved production facilities.

Furthermore, Cipla will continue to engage with the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority ("SAHPRA") to explore avenues of accelerated access to remdesivir.

The Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA) for remdesivir was first issued by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on 1 May 2020, mainly based upon a study funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in the USA. The study showed that remdesivir shortened the time to recovery in patients hospitalized with Covid-19.

The authorisation for emergency use was granted by the FDA on the basis that SARS-CoV-2 can cause a serious or life-threatening disease or condition, their view that the known and potential benefits of remdesivir outweigh the known and potential risks, and the fact that there is currently no adequate approved alternative treatment available for Covid-19.

What is alternate medicine and what are the different forms of it? – The Bridge

Most of the world has been in lockdown with the exception of a few places and people across the globe are getting impatient waiting for the vaccine to the pandemic which has led to work from home and has made precautionary measures as the new normal. A lot have switched to alternative forms of healing which have existed for a long time now but have gained recent traction due to diminishing faith in modern medicine or for personal reasons.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative holistic healing that has existed for thousands of years. It works via essential oil which is natural extracts. They are then used in the form of resins, oils and balms. It is usually applied on the skin and through smell (as the first part of the name suggests). Bathing salts, inhalers, diffusers are some products that are generally associated with aromatherapy healing. It is known to alleviate the pain that is often caused due to stress, anxiety and improve sleep quality, digestion and immunity. Though one should be wary as there are unproven claims such as aromatherapy treating Parkinsons disease and Alzheimers that havent been backed by research studies. It, however, can treat insomnia, anxiety and fatigue among some other illnesses.

Ayurveda

Ayurveda is among one of the many gifts India has given to the world has existed for thousands of years. It has been mentioned in various western medicine studies and also had a few clinical trials conducted to document the many benefits that have been claimed by people. It ranks very high in the field of alternative medicine with various health benefits that have been claimed such as increased immunity due to including consumption of herbs like turmeric which reduce inflammation and allows the body to fight foreign bacteria better. However, it is also not medically recognized and one should avoid including some forms of as it may contain lead or mercury. Despite some negative points, Ayurveda has shown to improve overall health and get rid of bad toxins from the body.

Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy is one of the few forms of healing that focus on the physical self. It comprises of massages that can be associated with clinical or sports concerns or stress in general. A clinical context would be to massage stiff areas, stressed or often have muscle spasms and this form of therapy would heal the pain. Massage therapy is also prevalent among top-level athletes who require the body to function at optimal levels to compete in various sports. Massages can help reduce the muscle soreness after a difficult workout which can help in better performance the day after. NCCIH states that there are little benefits when it comes to massage therapy helping cancer patients or people suffering from aids. Risks arent high when it comes to this form of therapy compared to many other forms of alternative medicine however one can suffer from a blood clot or fracture if the masseur/masseuse isnt careful.

These are some of the many forms of alternative medicine available today. Though each one of them comes with their own risks, some also have been shown to benefit overall health and treatment of diseases. It is important that one must do full research on the health benefits, side effects, legality among other factors and consult multiple opinions before choosing to adopt a form of alternative medicine.

CARMAT Announces the First Implantation of Its Total Artificial Heart in Denmark – Business Wire

PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Regulatory News:

CARMAT (Paris:ALCAR) (FR0010907956, ALCAR), the designer and developer of the worlds most advanced total artificial heart, aiming to provide a therapeutic alternative for people suffering from end-stage biventricular heart failure, announces the first implantation of its bioprosthetic artificial heart in Denmark.

The implant procedure was performed by the team of Dr. Peter Skov Olsen, cardio-thoracic surgeon at the Heart Center of Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen. It is the first Danish hospital to implant the CARMAT total artificial heart and the third international medical center contributing to the PIVOTAL study, together with the Institute for Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKEM) in Prague, Czech Republic, and the National Research Center for Cardiac Surgery in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.

Finn Gustafsson, MD, PhD, Professor of Advanced Heart Failure and Transplantation at the Heart Center and principal investigator of the study, comments: We are excited to gain clinical experience with the CARMAT artificial heart and to contribute to the PIVOTAL study. With its hemocompatibility, autoregulation and silent operation, the CARMAT TAH could become a real alternative treatment to heart transplantation for patients suffering from end-stage heart-failure.

Stphane Piat, Chief Executive Officer of CARMAT, adds: Rigshospitalet has developed a strong expertise in treating advanced heart failure and has participated in front-line clinical studies with innovative medical therapies and devices in this field. I am delighted that such an internationally recognized site becomes the third international center to implant our device. With the recent release of certain COVID-19 pandemic-related restrictions, CARMATs teams and proctors were able to prepare and participate in the surgical procedure and early post-operative follow up. To date, 13 patients have received our device in the PIVOTAL study and, subject to the progressive ramp-up in recruitments across our three active study centers, we estimate that 4-5 months are needed to complete enrollment and reach the total of 20 patients.

In accordance with good clinical practice and subject to regulatory obligations or specific circumstances, CARMAT will not provide individual updates on patients implantations or their health condition. However, it is planning to communicate when major milestones in the PIVOTAL study are reached, such as the opening of new centers and the overall progression of patient recruitment.

About CARMAT: the worlds most advanced total artificial heart project

A credible response to end-stage heart failure: CARMAT aims to eventually provide a response to a major public health issue associated with heart disease, the worlds leading cause of death: chronic and acute heart failure. By pursuing the development of its total artificial heart, composed of the implantable bioprosthesis and its portable external power supply system to which it is connected, CARMAT intends to overcome the well-known shortfall in heart transplants for the tens of thousands of people suffering from irreversible end-stage heart failure, the most seriously affected of the 20 million patients with this progressive disease in Europe and the United States.

The result of combining two types of unique expertise: the medical expertise of Professor Carpentier, known throughout the world for inventing Carpentier-Edwards heart valves, which are the most used in the world, and the technological expertise of Airbus Group, world aerospace leader.

The first physiological artificial heart: given its size, the use of highly biocompatible materials, its unique self-regulation system and its pulsatile nature, the CARMAT total artificial heart could, assuming the clinical trials are successful, potentially save the lives of thousands of patients each year with no risk of rejection and with a good quality of life.

A project leader acknowledged at a European level: with the backing of the European Commission, CARMAT has been granted the largest subsidy ever given to an SME by Bpifrance; a total of 33 million.

Strongly committed, prestigious founders and shareholders: Matra Dfense SAS (subsidiary of the Airbus Group), Professor Alain Carpentier, the Centre Chirurgical Marie Lannelongue, Truffle Capital, a leading European venture capital firm, ALIAD (Air Liquides venture capital investor), CorNovum (an investment holding company held 50-50 by Bpifrance and the French State), the family offices of Pierre Bastid (Lohas), of Dr. Antonino Ligresti (Sant Holdings S.R.L.), of the Gaspard family (Corely Belgium SPRL and Bratya SPRL) and of M. Pierre-Edouard Strin (BAD 21 SPRL), Groupe Therabel as well as the thousands of institutional and individual shareholders who have placed their trust in CARMAT.

Alternative medical therapies allowed to resume in Dubai – Gulf News

Picture for illustrative purposes: acupuncture Image Credit: Pexels

Dubai: All private health facilities in Dubai will be able to resume most of their alternative medical therapies with immediate effect, except for dental and ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) services which continue to fall in the essential or emergency category only. Health care professionals have welcomed this move as this will provide an economic lifeline to most clinics that have been impacted by the clampdown on elective therapies and procedures in the face of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Complementary Medicine therapies to resume

In a circular dated May 11, sent out to all private health facilities in Dubai the Dubai Health Authority announced the resumption of all Complementary and Alternative Medicines(CAM) such as Ayurveda, naturopathy, Greek, Herbal and Chinese medicine, including those involving needles such as acupuncture.

The circular also announced the resumption of physical therapies such as those offered by chiropractors, osteopathy and osteopaths.

Dental and ENT to continue to be limited to emergency and urgent only

However, in case of Dental and ENT services the circular clearly stated: Visits for ENT and Dental clinics will be limited for emergencies and urgent cases, and according to the assessment of the treating physician, including but not limited to: acute dental pain, severe infections, injuries and trauma, orthodontics, root canals etc.., all other appointments to be postponed where possible, to avoid aerosol generating procedures from dental and ENT treatment for public safety.

A Dubai-based dentist explained that an aerosol affect is created when dentists use high powered devices that require compressed air, such as ultrasonic scalres dental handpeices, high speed instruments used to disnfect a tooth during a root canal treatment. The aersols which are a mixture of the debris of microorganisms from the oral cavity of the patient and tiny droplets of water from the high pressured devices get airborne and remain suspended in air for some time. These aerosols can pose risk of airborne diseases to the clinician, staff and other patients as well. With several studies pointing out the possible airborne transmission of the Sars-Cov-2 virus, any procedure which creates an aersol affect has to be carried out only in emergency and urgent cases.

High level of compliance to sanitsation and hygiene

The activities have been restarted with the caveat that all the medical facilities will continue to observe the current guidelines on maintaining a high standard of industrial sanitasation and hygiene with special focus on patient receptions, operation theatres and elevators and document their daily disinfection operation on a daily basis as per the the protocols set by the Dubai Municipality. All health professionals must adhere to the precautionary measures for preventing spread of infection such as wearing proper Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) at all times, practising hand hyiene, taking patients in by appointment only, having patients wear masks and gloves and making sure that adequate social distancing is maintained in the facility.

The DHA will subject all facilities to regular rounds of inspection to make sure that there is compliance to all aspects of guidelines and protocols.

‘Snitch list:’ Trolls harass those who reported Covid-19 business violations in Washington state – KUOW News and Information

In late March, Washington state officials launched an online portal to report non-essential businesses operating despite Gov. Jay Inslee's order that they close.

But some people have received threats and harassment after filing reports and having their personal information released by the state.

Among the complaints to the state:

A Kirkland woman reported on March 30 that an alternative medicine business was open and advertising an intravenous drip that could supposedly boost ones immune system against the coronavirus.

A man, concerned about a Redmond coffee shop inside a QFC that remained open, filed a report using the portal a day later.

And in Seattle, a business owner watched as customers visited a spa next door to his yoga studio, which hed closed to clients. He submitted a report, he told KUOW, because he thought the longer non-essential businesses remained open, the longer the Covid-19 pandemic would persist.

These reports were among thousands submitted to the state regarding the alleged operation of non-essential businesses, against Inslees stay-at-home order. The measure is intended to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus.

These three individuals told KUOW they didnt realize their names and contact information would be subject to public disclosure. A fourth person said she didnt believe anyone besides state officials would go through the trouble of obtaining the complaints.

Related: Violate stay-at-home order and risk arrest or having business license revoked, state officials say

Many discovered that wasnt the case when they received a mysterious email on May 6, warning that their personal information was being circulated online. The email was sent by treamaiden@gmail.com, which appears to now be defunct.

You may or may not have recently sent a complaint to Jay Inslee of Washington state," the email reads. "Recently I came across your information by what I believe may have been a leak of everyone who turned in a business.

Ten minutes later, harassing phone calls came rolling in for the Kirkland woman, who asked not to be named in this story, citing concern for her personal safety. Kirkland was the first hot spot identified amid the U.S. coronavirus outbreak.

Some of the emails and voicemails were mean-spirited, others threatening.

I just got news that you knocked on my business," said a male caller with a seemingly affected New Jersey accent. "You got 48 hours to get the f--- out of Washington, or Im coming for you and your loved ones.

Warning: This voice record includes offensive language.

You liberal f------ c---, I hope you choke on the f------ virus, said a woman with the cadence of someone who might live in northern Washington. Im so glad its public disclosure.

Warning: This recording includes offensive language.

Those who reported potential violations found themselves on what would become known as the snitch list. The document, which contains names, phone numbers, email addresses, and the complaints themselves, was shared within politically fueled Facebook groups.

KUOW is not naming the complainants in question, as they have requested not to be identified out of concern for their safety.

It was a lot. It was really scary and stressful, the Kirkland woman said, recounting the numerous voicemails and emails that she received. I was just trying to be a good person. I thought my information was protected.

By reporting businesses to the state, these complainants unwittingly found themselves in the middle of a conflict between right-wing groups advocating against business closures and state officials who argue the shutdown is necessary to curb the pandemic.

The "snitch list" was requested 19 times before the warning email was sent to the Kirkland woman on May 6. Several media outlets, individuals, and people who listed themselves as lawyers asked for the document using public disclosure requests.

The document is now housed on a website run by conservative activist Glen Morgan, who lives on a farm in Thurston County. On his website, Morgan calls the document the list of Inslees informant army.

Within the first four days of it being posted, 6,500 people downloaded the spreadsheet containing the complaints and contact information of those who filed them. Morgan said he posted the list as a matter of transparency and habit.

"I will never write an article unless I absolutely have to that doesn't have the original source-linked documents that I'm referencing," he said. "If you look at the other articles that I write, I mean I put up hundreds of original source links usually government documents on a monthly basis."

Morgan told KUOW he doesnt condone the harassment that has resulted from the list circulating online. He said the culprits behind the intimidation should be identified and exposed. Still, he doesn't intend to remove the list from his website.

When asked if he would feel responsible if someone on the list were to be harmed, Morgan said No but I think the state should be.

As he sees it, state officials created a hostile situation.

"It's certainly not a good way to build the harmony in the community or, you know, really achieve anything other than just pitting neighbor against neighbor," Morgan said.

I mean, that's something that you would find more in like an Eastern Germany spy novel, you know or China, he said.

Today, the online complaint portal gives this warning: All of the information collected at this site is considered public information. All of the information collected at this site is public information that will be publicly released in a public records request per RCW 42.56.

This disclaimer had been on the website, which linked to the form, but not on the form itself. This meant that people who Googled the form, or accessed the form through a media outlet, would not have seen the disclaimer.

Governor's Office spokesperson Mike Faulk said officials "strongly condemn" the harassment resulting from the circulation of complainants' personal information.

"The treatment people have been subjected to is unacceptable and repugnant," Faulk said by email. "It is extremely troubling that people who were trying to keep their communities healthy were subjected to this."

He said the harassment has not discouraged people from submitting complaints through the online portal, to the surprise of state officials. However, more of the reports are being filed anonymously now.

Meanwhile, the Seattle yoga studio owner said he's not satisfied.

"I support what our governor is doing," he said. "I'm very disappointed in him just kind of brushing this aside when ... people being threatened is also a matter of public health. "

The harassing phone calls and emails the Kirkland woman received have died down for now. But the experience has left her shaken.

I would never provide contact information ever again for anything, she said. I literally thought this was completely anonymous and Im trying to be a good person. And now Im afraid for my life.

'Snitch list:' Trolls harass those who reported Covid-19 business violations in Washington state - KUOW News and Information

Coronavirus related conspiracy theories spread across the internet – The Yucatan Times

Depending on who you talk to, the current coronavirus pandemic might be the natural product of evolution, the result ofa lab accidentor a biological weapon designed by the Chinese. Lockdown measures to impose social distancing restrictions are responsible measures designed to protect public safety or theyre part of a Democratic Party plot to destroy the economy in order to diminish President Trumps chances of reelection in November. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nations top infectious disease specialist, is either a respected medical professional ordevious member of the deep statewho is using the coronavirus (which he may or may not have helped create) to control the public through amandatory vaccination.

And those are just some of the narratives that are spreading within the United States.

In countries around the world, equally implausible ideas are circulating, derived in part from their particular political and historical situations, but also cross-pollinating with a wide array of conspiracy theories, misinformation and state-sponsored content, ranging from blatant propaganda to more subtle disinformation campaigns. In some cases, the dearth of verifiable information has resulted in the spread of misinformation by fairly reputable and well-intentioned sources. The coronavirus infodemic, however, has allowed a host of malign actors from the Russian government to domestic extremists to scam artists peddling bogus cures to exploit existing societal fissures for their own political or personal gain.

All of that just contributes to this massive, unstoppable flow of information that would be impossible to contend with even for the most resilient society, said Nina Jankowicz, a fellow at the Wilson Center in Washington, D.C.

In fact, Jankowicz told Yahoo News that other than in countries such as Turkmenistan, where the government has imposeda complete clampdownon any and all information related to the coronavirus, I cant imagine a country that would have no proliferation of conspiracy theories or disinformation at this time.

Disinformation feeds on anxiety and promotes emotional and irrational responses. I think its a common misconception that disinformation creates some sort of new feeling in people, Jankowicz says. Often its really weaponizing preexisting feelings, or certainly amplifying them.

So the anti-vax groups, for instance, are going to be more likely to buy into this narrative about the vaccine being somehow an instrument for global control. The folks who are distrustful of the United States, whether thats in the Middle East, or in China, or Russia, are going to be pawns of their nations propaganda machines.

You can see that phenomenon at work in internet metadata. In aninterview with Politicolast month, Joel Meyer of Predata, a predictive analytics firm, said that since the beginning of the pandemic, his firm has observed an increase in traffic from Persian and Hindi-language internet users to websites that are critical of Western medicine and promote alternative healing methods, including unproven supplements. At the same time, Meyer said that in European languages, including French, German and Italian, anti-vaxxer attention has really spiked recently.

Were seeing interest rise to unprecedented levels in alternative medicines and treatments, he told Politico, concluding that, based on the analytics, that type of disinformation is sinking in, its having an effect.

Alkaline Water: How It Is The Key to Boost Your Immunity – NDTV Food

Immunity booster drink: Alkaline water may provide many health benefits.

Highlights

The current Coronavirus pandemic has left everyone searching for answers. While the world struggles to find a medicinal solution, it is clearer than ever that we must focus on boosting our immunity- a seemingly simple yet one of the most effective preventive solutions against any infection or flu. While reading umpteen number of articles on different 'superfoods' and supplements that can boost our immune system, what we generally miss considering is probably the most essential part of our day-to-day existence - alkaline water.

While consumers in general have become more health conscious over the years, many of them are still not aware if the water they drink daily is fit for consumption. Majority of the households seem to be satisfied with a simple Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purifier in their homes, which in turn, drains water of many minerals that are essential for the body, lowers it pH and thus renders it acidic leading to a bitter tasting, corrosive water that is unfit for drinking.

The solution lies in relooking at water purification in its entirety. To be more precise, it is time to turn to Alkaline Water- a significant step towards boosting the immune system.

Alkaline water helps boost immunity and enhances hydration.

To begin with, alkaline water when introduced in the body neutralises the acidic toxins present in the body. Overabundance of these toxins essentially means that the body must work overtime to maintain healthy functions- resulting in lethargy and overall weakness. Alkaline water, which is easily absorbed in the body allows for a more efficient system of flushing the toxins and harmful substances out of the body. Alkaline water is also known to improve the performance of one's circulatory system, which means better blood quality and more oxygen to vital organs.

Additionally, drinking alkaline water hinders the growth of free radicals in the body that can fasten the ageing process. As per a study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, a significant difference in the whole blood viscosity of participants was observed after consuming alkaline water as opposed to regular water after a strenuous workout. According to a study published in Evidence Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, alkaline water provides higher longevity in terms of "deceleration aging factor" as it increases the survival functions.

(Also Read:How to Make Alkaline Water at Home)

Alkaline water is fortified with a range of essential minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium and trace elements like copper, zinc etc. that are essential for maintaining body's metabolism. A study published in the Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine showed that consumption of alkaline water may prevent osteoporosis and protect pancreatic beta cells with its antioxidant effects. Yet another study published in Public Library of Science (PLOS) said that drinking alkalised water enhances hydration, improves acid-base balance and anaerobic exercise performance. People who drink alkaline water claim that it provides greater hydration than regular water. Since many people suffer from dehydration, especially so in warmer climates, drinking alkaline water may be an effective way to keep the body well hydrated.

There are many other known benefits of drinking alkaline water, such as stronger bones and weight loss. All the benefits above collectively prepare the immune system to battle foreign pathogens and protect you from many diseases and health issues.

Couples conceiving an alternative to IVF – The Catholic Weekly

Reading Time: 3 minutesLeft to right: Steven, Zavier, Charli-Rose, Zachary and Kristy

KristyKeesing-Goldsmith relishes being mum to three-year old Charli-Rose and one-year-old twins Zavier and Zachary.

Five yearsagoshe thought she thought she would never have children of her own.Having sufferedPolycystic Ovarian Syndromefor yearsand four miscarriages, she was told by two doctors that her only option was IVF. The IVF doctor she consulted told herthe clinic would not be able to helpuntil she had lost weight, which she struggled to do.

That was really hurtful and discouragingto hear becauseI really wanted to be a mother, MrsKeesing-Goldsmith toldThe Catholic Weekly.

An encounter with Blacktown GP Dr Van Nguyen after contracting a strain of the common flu opened up the alternative of restorative reproductive medicine, a field thats growing alongside the IVF space with great results for womens health and fertility but is much less known.

Im so grateful and I honestly believe that more doctors should be studying this

After learning to chart her monthly cycle and with clinical support from Dr Nguyen, she fell pregnant within a month with Charli-Rose. She is convinced that without Dr Nguyens support throughout both of her pregnancies they would not have succeeded.

Im so grateful and I honestly believe that more doctors should be studying this and providing this to people because it does work, she said. I tell all my friends that have PCOS and things like that it doesnt mean you cant have a baby.

The couple are amongmany who have found hope in fertility awareness methodswith the three main ones being the Billings Ovulation Method,Sympto-Thermal Method and CreightonFertilityCaremodel. They each promote womens overall health and, particularly the Creightonmodelwhich is integrated with medical care, offerwholisticalternatives to IVF that are respectful of the couplesrelationship and any newlife.BlacktownFertilityCarepractitionerVinettaLobo eKakodkarsaid that its method of charting enables a woman to monitorher monthly cycle from which trained practitioners and doctors can gainvaluable information topromote awomens reproductive and gynaecological healthand help couples toachieve pregnancy or avoid or spacepregnancies.

And it is not only about womens health and fertility but promotes relationship bonding as well.North Ryde couple Amanda and Noah Silveira are expecting their first child this month. They are convinced that using the Creighton model of fertility awareness helped them to achieve and maintain a healthy pregnancy.Mrs Silveirawas prompted by a family friend tolook intothe methodafter she was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Disease (PCOD) and failed to find asolution from GPs exceptto take the birth control pill.

I was looking for something more natural, she said. Then when I got marriedwe were also looking at using it forachieving and avoiding pregnancy.

Mrs Silveirasaid she learnt inone or two sessionshow to track and record her monthly cycle, andit tooka month of practice to becomeconfident in using the method.

With the integrated care of Merrylands Dr VeronicaOConnellshe was able to alleviate the effectsof her disease and after using it to try to fall pregnant was successful after the first month. Like MrsKeesing-Goldsmith she wascarefully monitoredby her GPthroughout the nine months.

Mr Silveira said the results were pretty impressive and that he had learnt a lot about his wife throughout their fertility journey.

Alternative Treatment for Mesothelioma in Herb-like Compound – Surviving Mesothelioma

A man-made version of a traditional Chinese herb could be an alternative treatment for mesothelioma.

Turkish researchers have published a new study on a drug called halofuginone. The study shows the drug has significant anticancer effects on mesothelioma cells.

In an article in Cell Biology International, they explore how halofuginone affects mesothelioma and lung cancer cells.

Mesothelioma is an asbestos-linked cancer that is hard to treat. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common type. Pleural mesothelioma grows quickly. It usually causes few symptoms until it is very advanced.

Chemotherapy is the main treatment. When that stops working, many patients look for an alternative treatment for mesothelioma.

Scientists are studying immunotherapy, new kinds of radiotherapy, and even light-based treatments for mesothelioma. So far, there is no reliable second-line alternative treatment for mesothelioma.

Halofuginone is a synthetic molecule. It is an analog of febrifugine. Febrifugine is an alkaloid found in the Chinese herb Dichroa febrifuga (Chang Shan).

In 2015 , Israeli researchers published an article about halofuginone. They wrote, During recent years, halofuginone has attracted much attention because of its wide range of beneficial biological activities, which encompass malaria, cancer, and fibrosis-related and autoimmune diseases.

The Turkish study aimed to understand halofuginones effect on mesothelioma cells. If it limits their growth or causes cell death, it could be an alternative treatment for mesothelioma.

This was the first time for halofuginone tests on malignant mesothelioma cells. Researchers tested the alternative treatment for mesothelioma on lung cancer cells, too.

They found that the drug interrupts the cell cycle. It interferes with signaling proteins. This causes mesothelioma cells to die earlier and at a faster rate. The more halofuginone the researchers used, the more mesothelioma cells died. This was also true for the lung cancer cells.

HF exerts its anti-cancer effects in lung-derived cancers by targeting signal transduction pathwaysto reduce cancer cell viability, induce cell cycle arrest, and apoptotic cell death, writes lead author Asuman Demiroglu-Zergeroglu.

Malignant cells were more susceptible to halofuginone than normal cells.

The research team concludes that halofuginone might be an alternative treatment for mesothelioma. But there have been no US clinical trials on Chinese herbs for mesothelioma.

A British Medical Journal published a review of Chinese clinical trials on herbs in 2013. Most of those studies combined conventional and alternative treatment for mesothelioma.

University spinoff receives $750K to develop iron-based alternative to gadolinium contrasts – Health Imaging

Since we started the company in 2017, concerns in medicine have only increased over the gadolinium-based MRI contrast agents available today, Bradford La Salle, co-founder and president of Ferric Contrast, said in the announcement. Doctors and patients want new options."

Theres been a number of endeavors investigating the possibility of a gadolinium-free MRI contrast agent, including a University of Texas at Dallas project utilizing organic radical contrast agents.

Janet Morrow, PhD, a co-founder of Ferric and UB chemistry professor, says the interest in iron-based compounds is largely due to the fact that the element is found naturally in the body, unlike gadolinium.

Iron is regulated, recycled and stored in humans, making it more likely that the body can handle any accumulated iron, Morrow, who also serves as Ferric Contrasts chief scientific officer, added in the statement. We have developed iron complexes that are highly soluble and stabilized in the trivalent high-spin form.

Inspired by her health battle, Andover’s Kennedy pursuing career in sports medicine – Andover Townsman

Before Mackenzie Kennedy became a volleyball star for Andover High and Endicott College, doctors wondered if her health would allow her to live a normal life, let alone play sports.

And even as she excelled for the Golden Warriors and Gulls, Kennedy was waging a battle to remain on the court.

I suffer from a neurological condition that causes seizure-type episodes, said Kennedy. Given that the seizures are caused by my autonomic nervous system, Im not considered an epileptic because the episodes cant be triggered in a clinical setting. The unique diagnosis made the treatment and management difficult.

With my illness, there was a lot of doubts if I would be able to participate in any sport, let alone collegiate athletics. My college sports medicine staff worked tirelessly with me to ensure that I obtained and maintained eligibility to play.

Now, inspired by those that allowed her to follow her dream, Kennedy (Endicott class of 2020) is pursuing a career in sports medicine. She is scheduled to begin work as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at California State University in the fall.

I decided on sports medicine as a career goal because of my struggles with illness, said Kennedy (AHS, 16). My college sports medicine staff was always so kind to me and supported me in my endeavors, no matter how challenging the road got. They were my lifeline.

Without them, college volleyball probably would not have been a possibility for me. I know how much it meant to me for them to be there. Now, I so desperately want to be that resource for someone else.

EARLY STRUGGLES, ANDOVER STAR

I first started suffering with my illness during middle school, said Kennedy. The condition escalated quickly during high school before doctors were able to get it under control. For a while. I couldnt attend public school for liability reasons.

While my doctors worked tirelessly to figure out medications and treatment that my body would respond to, I became hyper sensitive to my lifestyle habits that I could modify to help limit the episodes. I focused on hydration, nutrition, sleep, acupuncture, and other forms of alternative medicine to help control my disorder. Having sports taken away from me so abruptly gave me a new appreciation for the game.

A two-year captain for Andover High (2014-15), Kennedy moved from libero to setter as a senior and earned All-MVC honors. She averaged team highs with 9.0 assists and 3.8 digs while leading Andover to the Division 1 state title game.

Playing for Andover High was one of the highlights of my adolescence, she said. Though the state championship didnt go our way, beating a powerhouse like Barnstable, in a gritty, home, five-set (regular season) match was incredible.

ENDICOTT, CHOOSING PATH

Kennedy continued to star on the court at Endicott as a defensive specialist. As a senior this past fall, she was Commonwealth Coast Conference Libero of the Year, first team All-CCC and National Strength and Conditioning Association All-American.

While it was often a challenge to keep going, Kennedy said her passion only grew, both on the court and off. I was playing not only for myself and my love for the game, but I was also playing for all of the kids I met during my medical workups that wouldnt have the chance to pursue the same opportunities, she said.

I learned how challenging sports medicine is, and how creative and important these medical personnel are. Seeing the amount of investment the staff had in the athletes, and the relationships they built with them during challenging times was amazing. My first-hand experience truly inspired me to pursue the sports medicine field.

WORKING AT BC

Andovers Mackenzie Kennedy, an athletic training major at Endicott College, spent the fall and winter as an intern with the Boston College athletic program.

I knew that I wanted to work with a Division 1 program, she said. I reached out to the Boston College sports medicine staff on my own. I went after the mens ice hockey, mens basketball and football teams because of the level of challenge associated with the sports. Not only was I dealing with high injury sports and athletes much larger than myself, I also was stepping foot into sports that do not commonly carry female athletic trainers.

My days consisted of leaving Endicott at roughly 4:30 every morning and going into BC for 5:45 a.m. treatment and a 7 a.m. practice. I would then drive back to Endicott around noon to go to class, then and the practice or games for my own sport (volleyball).

Talking about LSD sounds funnier than taking it in ‘Have a Good Trip’ – messenger-inquirer

Nick Offerman wears a white lab coat as he introduces the documentary Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics, but the faint smile that the actor playing a nameless scientist struggles to suppress betrays the lack of solemnity of this film. As goofy as it is good-natured, Good Trip aims to entertain, not educate, as it presents a star-studded parade of celebrity reminiscences about taking hallucinogenic drugs. Mostly, it succeeds.

The famous folks who have been brought in front of the camera by filmmaker Donick Cary, a writer and producer known for his work on Late Night with David Letterman, The Simpsons and Parks and Recreation, come mainly from the world of comedy, and include Sarah Silverman, Nick Kroll, Rob Corddry and Paul Scheer (with the last two playing each other, in re-enactments of their drug trips). Along with some amusing animations, such re-enactments include a scene featuring Brett Gelman as a talking acorn, in a story told by the late actress Carrie Fisher. Other subjects include musicians (Sting, A$AP Rocky and others); pioneering LSD researcher and LSD user Timothy Learys son Zach Leary; doctor, author and advocate for alternative medicine Deepak Chopra; the late chef, author, raconteur and TV host Anthony Bourdain; and, in a perfunctory nod to the world of non-boldface names, psychiatrist Charles Grob.

Its Grob who talks about the potential of psychotropic drugs in medicine, especially as a treatment for depression and other mental illness. Sting seconds that notion, calling his overall experience with tripping both the good and the bad kind valuable.

More often, however, the stories range from the crazy if less than consistently hilarious, as Offerman promises at the top of the film to the downright scary at times. Bourdain spins a wild tale in which a young woman drops dead, from drugs he and his friend provided. That unhappy ending is an outlier: For the most part, the stories in Good Trip end without incident or long-term damage. Overall, the gist of the film is that media coverage of hallucinogen use is often hysterical. A running gag is a satire of an Afterschool Special in which teens (played by Maya Erskine of Pen15 and other actors) are shown taking drugs and immediately jumping out of the window.

In addition to all the anecdotes, the film offers a handful of tips for safe tripping too, some useful, and some not so useful:

Dont do acid and drive.

Control your set (i.e., the people youre tripping with) and setting.

Dont ever look in the mirror or, alternatively, do look in the mirror.

And, as Marc Maron says he was once told, during a bad trip: Just hang in there, man. According to Maron, thats advice he still gives people today, although it sounds pretty banal.

Is tripping for everyone? Clearly not, says A$AP Rocky, who tells one of the films funniest stories and the one most inappropriate for a family newspaper. According to Ben Stiller (whose frequent comedy collaborator Mike Rosenstein is the films producer) the actor has only ever tripped once, and that was more than enough. Probably could have just watched this, he jokes.

Two and one-half stars. Rated TV-MA. Available via Netflix streaming. Contains lengthy discussion of drugs, a little sex talk, and one story about an overdose, with some strong language sprinkled in. 85 minutes.

Can Complementary and Alternative Medicine Help Fight Covid-19? – stopthefud

Rajgopal Noidamboor in this Madras Courier piece:

If you have cold, put some turmeric in hot millk, add some ground pepper, cardamom and honey, froth it and drink it. It will make your throat feel good. Alternately, you can make some hot pepper rasam, mix it with rice and slurp it. To get rid of that darn cold, you coulf also mix ginger, lemon and honey to hot water and drink it. These are age-old recipes passed down from generations. Most of us remember getting these lessons from our grandmother.

Today, turmeric mixed in milk is called Turmeric Latte and sold in fancy cafeterias. But why does turmeric work? Thats because it is the one ingredient which has curcumin natures antiviral, antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Similarly, Ashwagandha(Withania somnifera)is a natural, preventative intervention.

In the fight against COVID-19, the Ministry of Healths Ayush has creted a task force to look into how preventative complementary and alternative medicine can help fight COVID-19.

We have commissioned an independent scholar to produee a report that looks into the science behind natural alternatives.

Todays storyby Rajgopal Noidamboor looks at the role of complementary and alternative medicine in fighting COVID-19.

Inspired by her health battle, Andover’s Kennedy pursuing career in sports medicine – Eagle-Tribune

A two-year captain for Andover High (2014-15), Kennedy moved from libero to setter as a senior and earned Eagle-Tribune All-Star honors.

Not only was I dealing with high injury sports and athletes much larger than myself, I also was stepping into sports that do not commonly carry female athletic trainers.

My days consisted of leaving Endicott at roughly 4:30 every morning and going into BC for 5:45 a.m. treatment and a 7 a.m. practice. I would then drive back to Endicott around noon to go to class, then the practice or games for my own sport (volleyball).

Anti-Vaxxers Have a Dangerous Theory Called Natural Immunity. Now It’s Going Mainstream – Mother Jones

For indispensable reporting on the coronavirus crisis and more, subscribe to Mother Jones' newsletters.

On April 26, two California physicians posted a video on YouTube about what they said was a potentially deadly side effect of social distancing: Our immune systems will get weaker because of lack of exposure to germs. They werent the only ones to make this argument. In a May 4 video, a controversial and outspoken Dr. Shiva Ayyaduraian engineer who claims to have invented emailalso embraces this idea. In a May 3 YouTube video, heannounced, Viruses do not harm or kill us. Instead, he argues, Your body is an amazing beingit knows how to take care of itself, and thats how we get immune health. But these politicians, the CDC and the NIHtheyre not talking about any of this. Shame on them, its criminal. An article from the Minnesota-based conservative think tank the Charlemagne Institute titled COVID-19 Lockdowns May Destroy Our Immune Systems is currently making the rounds, too.

Its not hard to see why this content took off. The ideaor the basic contours of it, at leasthas some elements of truth. Immunologists have shown that, in general, we strengthen our immune systems by exposing them to pathogens. In the last few decades, researchers have amassed evidence to suggest that some chronic conditions that are common in the developed world but rare in poorer countriesincluding asthma, allergies, and autoimmune illnesses like Crohns diseasecould be the result of an environment that doesnt have enough germs, causing the immune system to go haywire.

But the coronavirus is not a chronic immune condition; its a novel virus that attacks the bodys systems in ways not yet completely understood. Experts roundly reject the idea that social distancing will dangerously weaken the immune system. A broad-based immunity weakening because of social distancing? Definitely not, said Saad Omer,a Yale University epidemiologist and infectious disease specialist. Jennifer Reich, a sociologist who studies the spread of misinformation about health, agreed. In order for our immune systems to be harmed by social distancing, we would have to live in sterile settings for a long time in which no bacteria or germs could affect us, she wrote to me in an email.

But the experts I talked to werent at all surprised to see these discredited ideas making the rounds; theyve seen them before in the anti-vaccination and extreme holistic medicine communities. This is the coronavirus edition of their pervasive belief innatural immunity. Rupali Limaye, a Johns Hopkins epidemiologist who has studied the movement against mandatory vaccines, told me, We have heard from those that are concerned about vaccines the argument that they prefer to allow their immune system to be naturally exposed to a specific pathogen to gain immunity, she wrote to me in an email. Its a spinoff of previous theories weve seen, concurred Omer, who has written extensively about anti-vaccination groups. This is all the usual stuff.

Indeed, anti-vaccination groups on Facebook have referenced the idea constantly in recent posts. One widely shared meme lists, Things that suppress our immune systems: Masks, gloves, no sun, fear, vaccines, washing hands with synthetic soaps. In response to an article about the decline in childhood vaccination rates as a result of coronavirus, one member of the group Michigan for Vaccine Choice commented, God, I would love for my kids to catch chicken pox, my body could use a little exposure to keep the shingles away lol plus you know them developing actual immunity would be nice.In recent weeks, in response to calls for social distancing, several of the groups posted a 2016 New York Post article titled, We Need to Stop Sanitizing Everything and Let Bacteria Back Into Our Lives.

Meanwhile, alternative medicine groupspromote the idea that eating the right foods or taking certain vitamins and supplements will strengthen the immune system so that it can successfully fight off coronavirus. Like any virus, coronavirus is no match for someone with a strong immune system, writes Sally Fallon Morell on a blog affiliated with the holistic nutrition group the Weston A. Price Foundation. Coconut oil, bone broth, and raw milk are among the foods she recommends to bolster the immune system against coronavirus. Just to be clear: This idea is patently false; humanity has never seen the virus before, therefore our immune systems have no natural defenses against it.

Given the holistic community and anti-vaccination groups fixations on natural immunity, its not surprising that the belief that we can end the pandemic through herd immunitydeliberately exposing everyone to the virus until we develop enough immunity that it dies out on its ownhas gained traction. The sooner well, able-bodied people get back to work, the sooner natural immunity will occur and we will have a fighting chance against the virus, reads one post on Indiana Coalition for Vaccine Choice. An April 22 post on VaxChoiceNH says, We know from decades of medical science that infection itself allows people to generate an immune responseantibodiesso that the infection is controlled throughout the population by herd immunity.

Infectious disease expertsall agree that the herd immunity approach would be catastrophicmillions of Americans would die in the process. It would be one thing if it were just fringe groups promoting this dangerous idea. But there are signs that this dangerous and flawed line of thinking is making its way into the mainstream. Over the past few months, Omer has watched in horror as the musings from armchair epidemiologists have gone viral on social media. He pointed to several influential op-edssome of them by physicians in fields having nothing to do with infectious disease or epidemiologypromoting the herd immunity approach. In a sprawling March 20 New York Times op-ed, David Katz, a Yale preventive medicine specialist who focuses on diet, wrote thatthis approach could allow us to return to life as usual and perhaps prevent vast segments of the economy from collapsing. Healthy children could return to school and healthy adults go back to their jobs. When Omer read the piece, he was appalled. These people are putting forth these theories without checking with people whose job this is, who specialize in it, he told me. This is not a debate societythere are actual consequences here. People are dying in hospitals alone.

Omer isnt the only expert concerned that misguided ideas about the immune system will flow from the fringe into the popular imagination. Devin Burghart, vice president of the anti-white-nationalism think tank the Institute for Research and Education on Human Rights, has been studying the nascent co-mingling between the anti-vaccination community and groups that stage coronavirus shutdown protests. He has noticed that the protest groups have begun to repeat the natural immunity talking points, and that both groups have embraced the herd immunity approach. These people are really gaining a lot of traction, and that is worrisome, he says. We worry about these ideas making it into the mainstream.

Omer cautions that if these ideas take hold, they could persist even after the coronavirus pandemic dies down, noting, Those of us in this field will be cleaning up these messes for years to come.
