Aerospace giant expands on Fore Business Park – The Business Desk

One of the worlds largest aerospace companies is starting operations at IM Properties (IMP) Fore Business Park, near Solihull.

The new 23,700 sq ft building was completed in August for Collins Aerospace on the M42 business park near junction 4.

The Florida-headquartered corporation which employs more than 70,000 people in 30 countries initially took 25,600 sq ft at the park as UTC Aerospace Systems, which then merged with Rockwell Collins in November 2018 to create Collins Aerospace.

The new EPC A rated building, delivered by IM Properties in-house project delivery team, combines research and development laboratories with Grade A offices above and was completed in August.

Alongside the building for Collins Aerospace, IM has also built a 222-sqace multi-storey car park, which will provide an overspill for existing occupiers at Fore.

Majella Lynch project director for IM Properties, said: The installation of Collins Aerospace builds on the opening of our new 65,000 sq ft campus at Fore last summer and means the business park is now fully occupied. The letting to Collins Aerospace reinforces junction 4 as a significant employment location on the M42, alongside our Blythe Valley Park scheme.

Constructing the building throughout the Covid pandemic has brought new challenges for our delivery teams and we are proud to have delivered a high quality building for Collins Aerospace despite this uncertainty.

Claire Wright, business services manager for Collins Aerospace said: We are delighted with our new building at Fore Business Park, which grows our operation in Solihull. The link with our existing building at Fore gives us a versatile base to cater for the needs of our future operations.

Extreme High-Speed Laser Material Deposition Used in Aerospace Manufacturing – Novus Light Technologies Today

The Turkish subsidiary of Bilsing Automation is using innovations developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT and its industrial partners. With extreme high-speed laser material deposition (EHLA) and the new special HighNo nozzle, Bilsing Automation aims to conquer new markets.

Fraunhofer ILT has been intensively researching and developing EHLA, since 2012, a process in which the laser melts the powder particles above the melt pool. This fast and reliable process applies 25 to 250 micrometer thin layers at a speed of up to 500 meters per minute in an economical manner that conserves resources; it has already proven to be a reliable alternative to hard chromium plating. Since then, the process has been opening up new areas of application and conquering industrial sectors. The latest highlight is the 3D EHLA system, in which the building platform is moved extremely quickly in parallel and kinematically by three linear drives with a stationary laser processing head.

Series production, however, requires a new nozzle that can be easily exchanged so that users can work with EHLA in a safe, precise and highly reliable manner. Here is a look at the nozzles commonly used up to now: In laser material deposition (LMD), different powder nozzles are used depending on the application. For areas that are difficult to access, the lateral powder nozzle, which directs the powder jet laterally into the laser beam, has proven its worth. In contrast, the coaxial powder nozzle, which generates a conically bundled powder-gas jet, works independently of direction. It is particularly suitable for integration into automated systems for coating and additive manufacturing.

Nonetheless, EHLA places special demands on the quality of powder feed nozzles: To melt particles in the laser beam, their trajectories and speeds must be precisely adjusted. Even small deviations of the powder flow lead to non-optimal results, such as insufficient layer thickness or layer defects in the applied layers. For this reason, Fraunhofer ILT, together with the company Harald Dicker - Special Optics for Laser Technology from Aachen, has developed a coaxial nozzle called HighNo (High Quality Powder Nozzle), which directs a ring or cone shaped powder-gas jet onto the workpiece at a very precisely defined distance. Depending on the application, this precision leads to powder efficiencies of up to 95%. The nozzle tips are classically manufactured from a proven copper alloy and then machined with ultra-high precision.

Base body of nozzle with nozzle tip module. Fraunhofer ILT, Aachen / Germany.

The coaxial powder nozzle consists of a nozzle body and a monolithic powder tip module with two conical cones that guide the powder across a defined gap between the inner and outer cone. Thanks to the new manufacturing process, both cones have the same shape tolerances, so that the time-consuming adjustment after retooling, otherwise necessary with other nozzles, can be dispensed with. The surface of the nozzles has to meet high quality standards so that the particle flow can be adjusted in a targeted manner. Both the gap size and wear resistance of the nozzle can be individually adjusted according to customer requirements and application. Positive news from team leader Matthias Brucki from the Laser Material Deposition - Coatings & Functional Layers group at Fraunhofer ILT: The HighNo nozzles can be retooled within one to two minutes without any loss of quality thanks to the monolithic design. The new nozzle has been in series production since the beginning of this year.

Advantages of the coaxial powder feed nozzle

A Turkish subsidiary of Bilsing Automation GmbH, Bilsing Automation Tic Ltd. ti. from Bursa, Turkey, has already gained experience with EHLA and the new nozzle. It manufactures, not only flexible gripping and handling devices but also forming tools. The company has established long-standing contacts with Fraunhofer ILT through cooperating on the laser hardening of tools and the laser material deposition (LMD) of sophisticated titanium Ti-6Al-4V components for the aircraft industry. In the meantime, we have advanced to become a subcontractor of Turkish Airlines, which also uses the process to repair titanium O-rings for landing gear, explains Managing Director Salih Ersungur. The companys interest in the innovations from Aachen grew and finally it introduced EHLA in the summer of 2019.

However, it did not convert a lathe, but equipped a mobile robot with a laser beam source, EHLA processing head and powder feed system. The result was a mobile EHLA station, which was used for testing purposes on a CNC lathe from another company. I mounted a brake disk on the jaw chuck of the lathe, reports Ersungur. We then basically positioned and programmed the robot to work with the lathe almost synchronously. Right at the start, the first test run was successful, and the CEO is very satisfied with EHLA and the smoother surfaces which require less or no reworking compared to those of conventional laser material deposition.

The analysis of the coating tests convinced the managing director to now offer the EHLA process as a long-term service in Turkey and other countries he serves, for example as an alternative to the controversial hard chrome plating with chrome(VI). Ersungur: I see very good opportunities in the shipbuilding, offshore and aviation sectors.

The company has also recently acquired the new HighNo nozzle. The exchangeable nozzle tips of the new nozzle generation are fastened with three screws that can be loosened in order to then insert a different nozzle tip, says the managing director, describing the advantages of the new nozzle technology. The HighNo nozzle makes the process more reliable and faster and reduces set-up times. Ersungur not only markets the combination of EHLA and HighNo as a new unique selling point exclusively in Turkey, but also intends to present it to customers in South Africa, Romania and Russia. Why? Because we have been laser cutting successfully for six years, we now had to get on board with EHLA. It sounds like the future since it already has momentum and we strongly believe in it.

Hermeus successfully demonstrated its prototype engine earlier this year and plans to build a Mach 5 aircraft for commercial travel. (Hermeus)

Hermeus Corporation, an Altanta, Ga.-based startup developing hypersonic aircraft primarily for commercial use, was awarded a $1.5 million Phase 2 prototyping contract by AFWERX to further develop its Mach 5 engine prototype, successfully tested in February, and aircraft design.

Partnering with the U.S. Air Forces Presidential and Executive Airlift Directorate, under the initial contract Hermeus will explore the necessary modifications to meet Air Force mission requirements within the Presidential and Executive Fleet, according to co-founder AJ Piplica.

By leveraging commercial investment to drive new technologies into the Air Force, we are able to maximize our payback on Department of Defense investments, said Brig. Gen. Ryan Britton, program executive officer for the directorate. The Presidential and Executive Airlift Directorate is proud to support Hermeus in making this game-changing capability a reality as we look to recapitalize the fleet in the future.

Prior to the award, the Hermeus team alumni of SpaceX, Blue Origin and Generation Orbit designed, built and successfully tested a Mach 5 engine prototype in just 9 months, though the company estimates bringing an aircraft to market is likely to take a decade or more.

While the next Air Force One, expected to be delivered next year, will be a modified Boeing 747-8, its clear the Air Force is interested in something quite different and quite a bit faster for the generation of executive aircraft after that.

But first, Hermeus will have to raise more money. A seed round and $1.5 million from AFWERX wont build an airplane and certainly not one that travels at Mach 5.

Lockheed Martin is expecting some F-35 delivery delays due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. (Lockheed Martin)

COVID-19 is likely to delay the delivery of 18 to 24 Lockheed MartinF-35 Lightning II fighters by several months, a company official said on Aug. 6.

Our goal for this year was to deliver 141 [F-35] airplanes, Steve Callaghan, the vice president of F-35 business development for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, told reporters during a virtual meeting to discuss the companys F-35 bid for the Canadian Future Fighter competition and the F-35 program overall.

Due to the COVID impacts to our supply chain, well have a difficult time achieving that goal, he said. As [U.S.] Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment [Ellen] Lord has said, major defense acquisition programs across the board are expected to see about a three-month production delay. Thats true in our case. We expect F-35 delays to last two or three months. At this time, we expect to see an impact of approximately 18 to 24 aircraft.

Kwang-Tzu Yang, professor emeritus of aerospace and mechanical engineering at the University of Notre Dame, died in his home Wednesday, July 29.

He will be remembered by his students and colleagues for his joy, his genuine smile and his significant contributions to the field of thermal sciences. An article in the International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, celebrating his 80th birthday and numerous accomplishments, described his approach to life: Yet to him it is all simply a search for understanding and a part of the unity of knowledgeand he is always looking for new ways of stimulating the interest of his audience and of getting them to participate in the quest for understanding.

Yang was born in Suzhou, China, in 1926 and came to the United States in 1948 to attend the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. While there, he earned his bachelors degree in 1951, masters degree in 1952 and completed his Ph.D. in 1955 under the supervision of Max Jakob, physicist and pioneer in the field of thermal heat transfer.

Soon after receiving his doctorate, he joined the Notre Dame faculty of the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. He was promoted to professor in 1963, served as department chair from 1967 to 1978 and was appointed the Viola D. Hank Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering in 1986.

He received numerous honors for his contributions to the heat transfer community, including senior editorship of the Journal of Heat Transfer, North American editorship of the International Journal of Experimental Thermodynamics and Fluid Flow, Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME), the ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award and the Foreign Research Award of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineering. He also received the prestigious lifetime achievement award the Max Jakob Heat Transfer Memorial Award named for his mentor.

When he retired from Notre Dame in 1998, Yang had graduated a total of 31 Ph.D. students. Since he did not believe in a restful retirement, he continued to serve as a guest lecturer at many leading universities throughout Asia, to enjoy his children and grandchildren and to fill his seat as a member of the viola section of the South Bend Symphony.

Early in his career Joseph M. Powers, professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering, worked with Yang on several projects and committees. I learned a lot from K.T. Yang and thoroughly enjoyed our interactions, Powers said. He influenced generations of students and faculty at Notre Dame. His wisdom, leadership and scholarship were always leavened with wit, kindness and charity.

1.2m CNC investment helps TGM move up the aerospace and defence supply chain – Bdaily

Member Article

Targeting opportunities with the major aerospace primes has seen a Lancashire manufacturing specialist invest 1.2m into state-of-the-art CNC technologies.

TGM, which is part of the 43m Aero Services Global (AS.G) Group, has just completed its first parts for a MoD contract on its recently installed Zimmermann FZ33 compact milling machine.

The long bed capabilities, machine dynamics, 30,000 RPM and fast cycle times are perfect for creating complex components to the exacting standards required by the aerospace and defence sectors.

This investment will provide the company with additional capability to take on more than 2m of new work annually, as well as allowing it to tender for work on larger structural assemblies.

Sarah Stephens, Director at TGM, commented: Traditionally we have provided 3, 4 and 5-axis machined components to aerospace tier 1s and this is still a core market, but we now have the technology, processes and skills in place to work directly with the primes.

The Zimmermann is a fantastic machine and is the largest out of all of the 18-strong CNC machine tools we currently have at our Preston facility. An initial package of work is already in production on the Zimmermann and there are plenty of opportunities we are currently exploring that could fill up capacity.

With this additional technology, we are hoping to double sales from 3m to 6m over the next two years.

TGM, which became part of AS.G in 2016, specialises in the machining of both hard and soft metals, producing components and sub-assemblies for customers supplying Airbus and BAE Systems.

Continued investment in processes, upgrading operational efficiencies and upskilling of its workforce has helped it achieve world class manufacturing (99.85%) and delivery (99.16%) performance and the Bronze SC21 award for the third successive year.

The companys core engineering skills have also been further boosted by the introduction of CATIA V5 CAD design packages and inspection software to ensure a total end-to-end solution for the customer.

Sarah added: The first package of work for the Zimmermann is worth 1.4m to our business over two years and is the type of contract we are now looking to secure.

Its all about positioning TGM as a strategic critical partner to the primes and ensuring we can add value at every part of the process. This wouldnt have been possible three years ago, but a combination of the investment, industry approvals and a track record of quality and delivery has paved the way.

Covid-19 has brought its own challenges, but we feel we are in a good position to come through the pandemic and proactively establish our new position in the supply chain.

About AS.G

AS.G was founded in 2015 with the aim of developing a highly specialist group, which could help a global customer base to consolidate their supply chains through innovation, efficiencies and excellent value for money.

It started operations with the acquisition of Phoenix Ltd in December that year and now boasts seven subsidiary companies, including Queens Award-winning Arrowsmith Engineering, B&H Precision Tooling, Datum, Ludolph, TGM and AMF Precision Engineering.

The group, which employs nearly 380 people, is split into two core divisions focusing on aerospace and tooling, providing a wide range of products from simple brushes, complex mill turned components and small, medium and large 5-axis milled parts to tooling, transportation media and fixtures for existing and next generation aircraft fuselages and wings.

These parts are delivered all over the world to customers, including Aeronova, Airbus, Leonardo Helicopters, GKN, ITP, Meggitt, Rolls-Royce and Spirit Aero Systems.

Stripped F-117 Nighthawk Arrives at Hill Aerospace Museum Direct From Tonopah – The Drive

While the U.S. Air Force still has some F-117A Nighthawks actively involved in flying operations, others are being removed from storage and transported for display at a select number of museums. This stripped-down F-117A was delivered to the Hill Aerospace Museum at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, yesterday.

The fuselage of the aircraft arrived by truck, direct from Tonopah Test Range Airport (TTR) in Nevada. Staff from Hill AFB, which is adjacent to the museum, assisted in moving it from the truck and into the museum. The aircraft arrived having been stripped of its trademark black Radar Absorbent Material (RAM). The demilitarization process for the Nighthawk is extremely complex, and it is detailed in this previous War Zone feature. The USAF has established a special facility to assist in the demilitarization of the F-117s at Tonopah.

The museum staff at Hill AFB will now re-attach aircraft 82-0799s wings, rear stabilizers, and other parts of the aircraft before it is repainted and put on display at the museums Lindquist Stewart Gallery. Some of these parts will be totally fabricated to look like the real thing as their structures are still highly classified and they cannot be kept within reach of the public. This particular aircraft flew some 21 missions during Operation Desert Storm in 1991.

The airframe appeared to have been delivered without its wings or tails and in an uncovered state, which is different than how we have seen F-117s transported in the past. This aircraft could be the same one the Department of Defense listed on its internal surplus exchange last March.

Another F-117 is shortly due to go on display at the Palm Springs Air Museum for its new Houston Pavilion, along with The Air Zoo Aerospace and Science Museum, in Michigan, which says it will be the first non-government museum to exhibit the aircraft.

The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, in Dayton Ohio, is due to receive an F-117A to complement YF-117A serial 79-10781 that is currently on display. F-117A serial 82-0803 is now loaned to the Reagan Presidential Foundation and on display at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, California. This particular Nighthawk was actually demilitarized at the Air Force Plant 42 at Palmdale, California, rather than at Tonopah. The preparation of the aircraft for display can be seen here.

The USAF has earmarked a dozen F-117s for loan to museums for public display. With the exception of the remains of Vega 31 in Serbia, the few other Nighthawks currently on display are pre-production YF-117s.

All told, the USAF looks to be moving fast to place the 12 F-117s set aside for display around the country, while a handful of others remain active flying missions from TTR. The rest of the airframes still being stored at the remote airbase are set to slowly be destroyed over the coming decade.
