Double Helix Dash 2012 highlights
April 10, 2012 The inaugural Double Helix Dash 5K and 1-mile Twilight Run, hosted by the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, was a great success thanks to tremendous community response. Approximately 400 runners signed up for the race before registration closed. More than 150 others participated in the 1-mile event. The 5K started at 5:30 pm Tuesday, followed by the 1-mile at 6:30. The crowd enjoyed a light breeze and temperatures in the upper 60s. The overall winner for the men was Erik Debolt of Madison. The 29-year-old finished at 17:22. Huntsville #39;s Candace Jacobs, 31, was the first female to cross the finish line, coming in at 18:52. The Double Helix Dash was one of many community events promoted through Healthy Huntsville 2012, an initiative designed to raise awareness about obesity and type 2 diabetes. Proceeds from the run supported research efforts at HudsonAlpha. Event partners included the City of Huntsville, Fleet Feet and Huntsville Track Club; sponsors included Regions Bank, McDonald #39;s, The Links, Inc., Colsa, Pearce Construction, 4 Site Incorporated, Star Market and Dynetics.
