A Vaccine That Protects Against COVID-19 May Be Right Under Our Noses : Shots – Health News – NPR

In case you were still procrastinating getting a flu shot this year, here's another reason to make it a priority.

There's a chance the vaccine could offer some protection against COVID-19 itself, says virologist Robert Gallo, who directs the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and is chairman of the Global Virus Network.

The key is getting the right flu vaccine, says Gallo, who was one of the main scientists credited with discovering HIV. "The vaccine has to have a live virus in it. The virus is attenuated so it doesn't cause disease, but otherwise the virus is alive."

A live virus may sound a bit terrifying, but it's a standard way to make safe and effective vaccines. In fact, you've probably already had a few "live, attenuated" vaccines in your lifetime, such as the measles vaccine or oral polio vaccine.

Now scientists are just beginning to learn that these vaccines may offer some unexpected advantages to the immune system.

When developing a vaccine, scientists have a few strategies to try. They can take a piece or component of the bacteria and use that to trigger an immune response in a person. They can kill the pathogen and use its corpse as the vaccine. Or they can take a live pathogen and weaken it in the lab.

The latter are called "live, attenuated vaccines," and over the past century, scientists have noticed something peculiar about these vaccines: They seem to offer some protection, not just from the targeted disease, but also against many different diseases, including respiratory infections.

"There's plenty of evidence for it," Gallo says. "The weakness is we don't really know the longevity [of the protection]. It will probably work only for months, but we can't say for sure."

Take for instance, the vaccine for tuberculosis. It's called bacille Calmette-Guerin, or BCG, and it contains a live, but weakened, strain of TB from cows.

When doctors in Sweden first started using BCG back in the 1920s, they noticed not only that the vaccine reduced a child's risk from dying of TB, but also that children who got it had a mortality rate from all causes that was almost three times lower than unvaccinated children. Since the 1970s, scientists in West Africa have documented a similar pattern with both the BCG vaccine and the live measles vaccine. In other words, the vaccines were doing something to boost the immune system's response to many kinds of pathogens.

Recently, doctors in the Netherlands directly tested the BCG vaccine against a placebo, to see if it could help volunteers fight off a weakened form of yellow fever. The conclusion? People who received the BCG vaccine mounted a stronger immune response against the virus and cleared out the virus more effectively than those who received the placebo, the study reported.

It's not just BCG that seems to have this effect. There's growing evidence that any live vaccines can offer some broad, nonspecific protection, including the oral polio vaccine, measles and the live flu vaccine.

Scientists have had a hard time believing the evidence because the idea goes against the way they thought vaccines work, says immunologist Zhou Xing at McMasters University in Ontario. "It's a new concept that has emerged in the field of immunology over the past five to 10 years or so."

In general, vaccines work by tricking the body to produce antibodies. These molecules are very specific. They typically target and neutralize only one type of infection.

Live vaccines also work through antibodies, but they likely do something else, as well. They supercharge our body's front-line defenders the cells that first recognize an invader and try to clear it out before the infection gets out of control, Zhou says. Specifically, scientists think live vaccines epigenetically reprogram immune cells in the bone marrow, called myeloid cells.

Unlike antibodies, myeloid cells are nonspecific they work on many types of invaders. And they work quickly when the virus first enters a person's body.

Now the big question is: Will live vaccines help a person clear out the coronavirus from their body before they get sick or before the infection becomes severe?

To figure that out, scientists around the world are currently running more than a dozen clinical trials with both BCG and the live polio vaccine to see whether they offer some protection against the virus that causes COVID-19.

No one believes the protection will be as strong or as long-lived as that provided by a specific COVID-19 vaccine, says Dr. Moshe Arditi, who leads one of the trials at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles.

But, he says, the BCG vaccine has several advantages to a specific vaccine. It's cheap. A dose only costs a few dollars. And we already know it's safe. "More than 130 million kids every year every year receive the BCG vaccine so the safety profile has been very strong," Arditi says.

So the BCG vaccine could be approved and available by early next year, he says. "It could be a bridge until we have a safe, effective COVID-19 vaccine."

In the meantime, virologist Robert Gallo says, why not go get the live flu vaccine, if you can?

This year, the flu vaccine comes in two major forms: a shot or a nasal spray. The shot, which is approved for all people above age 6 months who don't have contraindications, contains an inactivated virus or components of the virus. The nasal spray (FluMist), which is approved for people ages 2 to 49, contains live, attenuated flu viruses.

"You watch," Gallo says. "People who get the live flu vaccine will also be protected against the COVID-19. That's the hypothesis."

However, even if you get a vaccine, you should still exercise all the same cautious you would otherwise: Wear a mask, keep your distance, wash your hands and avoid large indoor gatherings.

Government enters into contract with Abingdon Health for COVID-19 antibody test – Pharmafield

The UK Government has entered into a contract with Abingdon Health, on behalf of the UK-Rapid Test Consortium (UK-RTC), for the supply of the AbC-19TM Rapid Antibody tests. As part of the contract the UK Government has placed its first order for one million COVID-19 rapid antibody tests.

This follows an independent evaluation commissioned by the UK government of the AbC-19TM Rapid Antibody test, which will be published in full in due course by Public Health England (PHE), after peer review.

The AbC-19TM Rapid Test, uses a small drop of blood from a finger-prick, and shows results in 20 minutes, without the need to go to a specialised laboratory. It detects IgG antibodies to full trimeric spike proteins of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This means the test detects those antibodies which interfere with the viruss ability to enter the human cells.

The test can be administered by healthcare professionals, such as doctors, nurses, pharmacists and healthcare workers, at the point-of-care. It has already received the CE mark, which indicates health and safety conformity for goods sold in the UK and EU.

The test will make it possible to build a swift and clear picture of how the virus has spread throughout the UK population.

It will also be able to help establish the effectiveness of any vaccine which provides protection by creating new antibodies. This information will be critical to managing current and future outbreaks of COVID-19.

Mass production is already under way and the antibody test will be rolled out under the governments COVID-19 surveillance studies to help build a picture of how the virus has spread across the country. Surveillance studies are vital to develop our understanding of how antibodies work. The antibody test has been developed for the Department of Health and Social Care in response to the Governments need to procure a high-quality antibody test.

To develop and mass produce the volumes needed for the UK population, Abingdon Health set up and led the UK-RTC in April this year. The consortium brings together the UKs largest rapid test medical manufacturers, working together to provide capacity for delivery of more than a million tests per week.

Abingdon Health CEO Chris Yates said: Our test will help give a picture of how many people in the UK have antibodies. This will be a crucial part of the understanding of immunity to COVID-19.

Mass testing will also help understand what the longevity of immunity is and, in time, help assess the efficiency of any vaccine on the market. In this respect, high-quality mass antibody testing has never been more important, and it will be critical for future public health responses.

The UK Government order of the first one million tests is an endorsement of this UK designed, developed and manufactured high-quality rapid diagnostic test. It is a triumph of British business and a breakthrough for UK life sciences.

We have ramped up production since the start of August and will be ready to deliver the first tests to the Government by early October. I would like to express my thanks to all my Abingdon Health colleagues for their tremendous support and hard work in achieving this milestone.

From Kolzig to Holtby: Consistency and a Quiz – Japers’ Rink

An era is ending in Washington. After 468 regular-season and 96 playoff starts, Braden Holtby is moving on.

Its undeniably sad, even if its also undeniably the right time and the right move for both player and team.

Holtby leaves the Caps in second place in almost every cumulative goaltending category in franchise history, from wins to losses to minutes played and shots faced (hes also first in Stanley Cups won).

The man he trails is, of course, Olie Kolzig, the face of the franchise for basically the entire Screaming Eagle jersey period, a human organizational bridge who laced em up as a Cap with both Scott Stevens and Nicklas Backstrom and almost everyone in between.

Between Kolzig and then Holtby, the Caps have experienced remarkable stability in net for more than 20 years now. In fact, since the start of the 1997 season, 62% of Caps regular-season games and 77% of post-season matches have been started by one of the two (1,224 games). Theyve combined to win 636 games for Washington over that span, with Kolzig holding a 287-282 edge in the regular season and Holtby up 50-17 in the playoffs (and, yknow...). And as good as each man was on the ice, each was an even more valuable member of the community.

The Caps have been fortunate to find that kind of consistency and longevity in goal. But, of course, theyve had other netminders pass through town during this time - 22 of them, to be precise... which got us wondering if we could name them all.

We could not.

Big Tech, Out-of-Control Capitalism and the End of Civilization – Scientific American

My girlfriend, Emily, is always telling me I have to read this or watch that. I usually resist. I have my own obsessions to indulge, like quantum mechanics. Whats annoying is that her recommendations, when I grudgingly comply with them, often turn out to be sound.

This happened with two of Emilys recent picks. One is The Social Dilemma, a documentary on Netflix. It sounded boringanother expose of the perils of social media. Ho hum, old news. But the film gripped me. Its an in-depth look at how big tech companies, by amassing more and more data on us, are getting better and better at manipulating us, with devastating results.

The film has several strands. One envisions, with actors, how social media hurt an American family. A teenage girl, stung by a casual online remark about her ears, sinks into depression, while her older brother tumbles into the rabbit hole of conspiracy theories. The film also depicts evil AI algorithms, played by three versions of a single creepy actor, ensuring that the teenage boy remains addicted to his smartphone.

These dramatizations were a little hokey. The most compelling, and disturbing, component of the documentary consists of interviews with tech insiders worried about what they have wrought. Actually, worried is too bland a word. These veterans of Google, Facebook, Twitter and other companies are freaking out. Some think digital technologies, unregulated, might destroy civilization.

Google, et. al. equip legions of brilliant engineers with vast databases and powerful AI programs to make their products as addictive as possiblethat is, to maximize the time we spend staring at a screen. The designers of these devices find them irresistible, too. Tim Kendall, former head of monetization for Facebook, recalls that after spending all day trying to boost his firms profits, he went home to his wife and kids and could not stay off his phone. Knowing what was going on behind the curtain, I still wasnt able to control my usage.

The more time we spend on our screens, the more the companies learn about us, the more money they make from advertisingcommercial and politicaltailored to our fears and desires. And once they deduce what news and (mis)information we like, or might like, online sites feed us more of it, confirming our biases. If you begin a search on, say, climate change, Google may suggest different results depending on what it knows about you and others where you live, according to a former Google designer.

This data-driven pandering not only keeps us glued to our devices. It has also contributed to the proliferation of fake news and conspiracy theories and to social schisms in the U.S. and elsewhere. We end up living in parallel universes with radically different views of global warming, race, gender, immigration, crime, abortion and COVID-19.

Some techies believed, initially, that they were creating a better world. Our entire motivation was Can we spread positivity and love in the world?, says Justin Rosenstein, who helped design Facebooks like button. The possibility that teens would be getting depressed when they dont have enough likes, or it could be leading to political polarization, was nowhere on our radar.

Yes, digital technologies yield vast benefits. During the pandemic I keep in touch with friends and family via e-mail and Zoom, and I teach my classes online. I can do research for this articlerewatching Social Dilemma and looking up reviews on my laptopright here in my apartment. When I tire of brooding over the downside of tech, I can binge on Community and Arrested Development.

Our digital era is a blend of utopia and dystopia, says Tristan Harris, who left Google to cofound The Center for Humane Technology (a phrase that sounds increasingly oxymoronic). I can hit a button on my phone and a car shows up in 30 seconds and I can go exactly where I need to go. That is magic. But Harris fears techs ill effects are outweighing its benefits. If we dont agree on truth, he says, or even that there is such a thing as truth, were toast.

One pundit insists that newspapers, radio and television didnt destroy civilization, and neither will smart phones. Another retorts that smart phones are far more addictive than previous information technologies. When many of us wake up in the morning, he notes, the only question is whether we check our phones before we pee or while we pee. And modern methods of surveillance and persuasion make those employed in the predigital era look laughably crude.

Toward the end of the film, Social Dilemma identifies capitalism as the ultimate cause of the ills wrought by big tech. Rosenstein, the Facebook designer, notes that capitalism promotes short-term thinking based on this religion of profit at all costs. This approach, which views nature as something to be mined, literally and metaphorically, for monetary gain, has given us climate change and other environmental threats.

The successful big-tech firms have figured out how to mine our attention. Were more profitable to a corporation, Rosenstein says, if were staring at a screen, staring at an ad, then if were spending our time living our life in a rich way. Rosenstein and others say the government must regulate tech firms to limit the harm they do; the companies cannot be trusted to regulate themselves.

Shoshana Zuboff, a psychologist at Harvard Business School, contends that companies should not be free to gather and sell information on customers without their consent. These markets undermine democracy and they undermine freedom, and they should be outlawed, she says. This is not a radical proposal. There are other markets that we outlaw. We outlaw markets in human organs. We outlaw markets in human slaves.

These calls for reform bring me to Emilys other recommendation, an infamous 50-year-old essay, The Social Responsibility of Business Is to Increase Its Profits, by economist Milton Friedman. The New York Times, which printed the essay in 1970, just republished it along with commentary from scholars and businessfolk.

The essay had a huge impact on economics as well as business and politics. As the Times puts it, Friedmans libertarian economics influenced presidents and inspired greed is good. Friedmans manifesto is crediting with catalyzing the swerve of the U.S. and other western democracies toward free-wheeling capitalism, which governments encouraged with lower taxes.

Friedman rebuked calls for corporations to seek social goals, such as eliminating discrimination, avoiding pollution and whatever else may be the catchwords of the contemporary crop of reformers. Those who express support for these goals, Friedman asserted, are preaching pure and unadulterated socialism and undermining the basis of a free society. Note Friedmans equation of freedom with corporate freedom.

It is governments job, Friedman argued, to impose rules on businesses that promote general welfare, but such restrictions should be minimal. By freely pursuing profits in competition with each other, with minimal government interference, businesses produce goods, services and jobs that benefit all of society. So Friedman and his many free-market acolytes have claimed.

We are now reaping the consequences of Friedmans vision in the form of industries that pursue profits regardless of the social costs. These include big pharma, which foists drugs on us that often make us sicker; big oil, which has thwarted efforts to counteract global warming; and now big tech, which represents the apotheosis of Friedmans ideology.

Economist and Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz comments in the Times that the fallacies of Friedmans ideology are more obvious than ever. Stiglitz asks: Should Mark Zuckerberg let Facebook users spread wanton disinformation if it increases his bottom line? Friedman would say yes. Economic theory, common sense and historical experience suggest otherwise.

Friedmans rhetorical style reminds me of Marx. Both men exude supreme confidence in their judgments, the kind of confidence that inspires zealotry in devotees. Marx predicted that capitalism, by elevating profit above all other values, would inevitably bring about its own destruction. Friedman said capitalism would give us unbounded freedom and prosperity. Right now, Marx is looking more prescient.

Near the end of Social Dilemma, an interviewer asks tech-visionary-turned-critic Jaron Lanier to peer into our future. If we go down the current status quo, Lanier replies, for lets say another 20 years, we probably destroy our civilization through willful ignorance. We probably fail to meet the challenge of climate change. We probably degrade the worlds democracies, so they fall into some bizarre autocratic dysfunction. We probably ruin the global economy. We probablyhe shrugsdont survive. Asked what he fears most, Kendall, the former Facebook executive, replies, In the shortest time horizon? Civil war.

Give capitalism its due. As I acknowledge in a recent book, capitalism has boosted longevity and prosperity over the last two centuries. But our fanatical commitment to Friedman-style capitalism has burdened us with acute inequality, dysfunctional health care, surging climate change and vicious political polarization. Meanwhile we keep robotically swiping our smart phones as things fall apart.

I try to resist alarmism, as a general rule, but alarmism feels like realism lately.

14 Ways IoT is Impacting the Food & Agriculture Industry – Appinventiv

The Internet of Things refers to smart devices that are capable of transferring information on a network. Although Kevin Ashton, the acclaimed co-founder, and director of the MIT Auto ID Centre, is credited with inventing the term, it wasnt until 2008 2009 that the concept became widely known.

As internet-enabled devices multiplied in production and installations, there were 12.5 billion internet-connected devices in 2010, so did the general awareness associated with IoT. As the IoT technology proliferates the marketplace, so does its form and utilities being realized by people in general. And why not? Combined with robotics and AI, the IoT technology hammers out human-dependencies from supply chains and reduces the cost to businesses. Nowhere is this more applicable than perhaps the food industry.

Beginning from the very farm that your food grows in, to the warehouses that store it and the retailers that distribute it, the food service industry has stepped in a new age of remote monitoring, sensing, and action that will have profound, and mostly positive, implications for its supply chain players. Let us find out how.

From disease control measures to cattle and field monitoring systems, IoT is transforming the industry of agriculture by putting the power back where it belongs. Into the farmerss hands. Major sectors where this tech has found a solid footing are indoor farming, livestock management, and aquaculture among others. But how is IoT overcoming challenges and breaking new ground in farming?

Robots have come a long way since the third industrial revolution, abetted by the development of the internet. Although far from changing the face of the F&B industry, agricultural robots aka agribots could offer a circumventing solution to the problem of labor shortages. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can be deployed to detect and exterminate weeds from the field. They could save farmers time, human resources, and spray volumes by acting precisely as per the demand. This saving translates into a healthy soil that has a lesser amount of pesticides/weedicides to absorb and more positive bacteria to preserve.

Machine learning, GPS, and the internet of things are making manned machine navigation a thing of the past. Farmers can remotely control their tractors, rotavators, and a host of agricultural machinery with a smartphone. As the code memorizes rough patches, it learns to alter gears and smoothen navigation to both protect the crops and the equipment.

Crop harvesting often turns out to be the plight of farmers often due to untimely harvests. Factors influencing such events could be the weather, untrained personnel, or other poor farm management. Harvesting robots could be trained with the wealth of information that we now possess to pick the right fruit at the right time. With the Internet of Things technology, farmers could grow high-value crops at scale than hedge their bets with varieties supported by minimum support prices.

Another way by which the food industry is scaling its appetite for the Internet of Things is by installing on-field sensors. By design, sensors are engineered to detect discrepancies in weather conditions, crop nutrition, soil pH, and more. Such a smartly coded crop monitoring system offers advance intel to farmers and warns them to prepare for exigencies.

Drones are yet another example of IoT in the food industry. The self-guiding technology makes use of GPS, image processing, infrared cameras, and ground control systems. Fourth Quarter Fiscal 2020 Financial Highlights

Commenting on the fourth quarter of fiscal 2020, Josh Disbrow, Chief Executive Officer of Aytu BioScience, stated "Revenue increased exponentially in Q4 2020, to $14.9 million, compared to $1.7 million for Q4 2019. On the Consumer Health side, we generated $6.9 million in revenue, an increase compared to Q3. A number of people have identified veganism as one of the biggest trends of 2018; the reality is that the number of persons identifying their diet as plant-based or vegan is growing larger and larger. Perhaps threatened by a shift toward plant diets for health, compassion, or environmental concerns, health personalities that question the benefits of a vegan diet are easily found, and their concerns, at times legitimate, need to be addressed. So what are some of the biggest mythsboth good and badabout veganism?

Many large studies of nutrition have indicated lower rates of chronic diseases for study subjects following a vegan diet compared with an omnivorous diet. Vegans can get cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and other serious disorders. I see patients eating a vegan diet, usually for only a few months or years, that have important heart disease, and most vegans ate an animal-based diet for many years before they adopted their new plan. New vegans and those motivated by ethics may choose a lot of processed foods high in oils, trans fats, sugars, and added salt. Vegans need cancer screening like colonoscopy just like everyone else, comprehensive lab studies, and imaging for silent heart disease to ensure optimal health.

Recently the health outcomes over 25 years were compared from a large database from the Harvard School of Public Health in subjects eating a healthy (whole grains, fruits and vegetables, nuts, legumes, teas, coffee, and vegetable oils) versus an unhealthy (juices, sweetened beverages, grains, sweets, fried potatoes) plant-based diet. It is not certain how many of the participants were following a fully vegan diet. During the study, 8,631 subjects developed coronary heart disease (CHD). Adhering to a plant-based diet lowered the risk of CHD by about 8 percent overall, but this relationship was much stronger for those following the healthy pattern. Those respondents enjoyed a powerful 25 percent reduction in their risk of coronary heart disease while those eating the unhealthy plant foods actually increased their risk by as much as 30 percent! The bottom line is that a healthy vegan diet is a whole-food plant-based diet (WFPB) and not a junk food diet.

2. A vegan diet is all that is needed for health.

In the 1970s athlete and author Jim Fixx made the mistake of believing exercise protected him from all ailments and ate a diet promoting heart disease. Unfortunately, he tragically died at age 52 of a heart attack despite all of his hours spent running. While a vegan diet can be a very healthy choice, it is just one part of an overall plan for optimal health. Pioneering studies by Dean Ornish, M.D., called the Lifestyle Heart Trial, combined a plant-based diet with exercise, stress reduction, yoga, social support and love, and cessation of smoking to reverse advanced heart disease. I advise vegans to incorporate these other healthy practices into their life as well. Sleeping seven to eight hours a night reduces the risk of heart disease substantially compared with those sleeping less than five hours. About 20 percent of the American public still smokes, and some are vegans who must quit. A strategy to manage stress, whether it is a breathing practice, yoga, religion, music, or social support is a key to health for all. Loneliness is a drag on health, which is one of the reasons I co-founded in Detroit a large and active vegan health support group.

3.A vegan diet provides all nutrients from plants.

Surely a rainbow-colored WFPB diet provides all nutrients for optimal health? In fact, in my preventive cardiology clinic, I measure blood and skin levels of many critical nutrients, and both omnivores and vegans are frequently low. Vegans in particular are often low in B12, vitamin D, omega-3, iodine, vitamin K2, and taurine (as are most omnivores). Obtaining the maximal health benefit from a vegan diet requires attention to these nutrients. There are vegan multivitamins that provide the proper amounts of these nutrients. At a minimum, all vegans should take vitamin B12. If whole food sources are desired, omega-3 can be addressed by 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed daily with greens, walnuts, and chia seeds. Kelp and nori can supply iodine. Mushrooms and plant milks can be rich in vitamin D. Adequate iron can be an issue for vegans, but spinach, tofu, beans, lentils, and sunflower seeds are quite good sources.

I have eaten a vegan diet for 40 years but have selected WFPB choices for almost all of those 40,000-plus meals. I also serve a WFPB version of vegan dishes at my family restaurant. I would strongly endorse a WFPB vegan diet for health enhancement to all readers, from those that are prenatal or pregnant to those feeding children and to baby boomers and the elderly, in keeping with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The healthiest vegan, however, will be the one who understands the myths that surround a vegan diet and avoids the pitfalls.

Vegan Shouldn’t Be The Last Word in Sustainability – Harvard Political Review

Not many changes to American food consumption patterns have been as prevalent and consistent as the rise of veganism over the past few decades. Once considered to be a fringe diet only followed by animal rights activists and health enthusiasts, the number of vegans in the United States has increased from 290,000 to 9.7 million over the last 15 years, and Google Trends data reports that interest in veganism in 2019 was 10 times what it was in 2004. Even more notable is the increase in demand for plant-based products among non-vegan consumers. 39% of American consumers in 2017 were reported as trying to incorporate more plant-based foods into their diet, and just this September, the factory farming magnate McDonalds introduced their first-ever Beyond Meat burger.

Veganism fills a growing desire in the West to eat more sustainably and ethically. As an alternative diet that seemingly rejects the industrialized processing commonly associated with the livestock industrys factory farms, it often comes across as a panacea for all agricultural industry issues. However, veganism alone is not the best dietary solution to the unsustainable and unethical practices of industrial food, since it exists within the food industrys colonialist framework, and its absolutist dietary ideology oppresses cultural interpretation outside of its Eurocentric guidelines. Furthermore, if they lack proper focus on the local context, vegan diets can still have perverse effects on sustainability. In its narrow emphasis on food products over food production, without a further prioritization of local agriculture, veganism is an incomplete solution to the ethical and environmental problems it seeks to remedy.

The Complexities Veganism Doesnt Capture

Veganism is a diet with one rule cutting out the consumption of animal products. The simplicity has drawn in various non-vegans, who have started looking for more plant-based options, [whether they are] looking for something healthier, something more sustainable the demand is growing, explained marketing researcher and assistant professor of marketing at Williamson College of Business Dr. Emre Ulusory in an interview with the HPR. This can also create problems, however, by ignoring some of the fundamental complexities of sustainable and ethical dieting.

Sustainable food systems need to consider the method of production in addition to the products themselves. Generally, animal products are less sustainable than plant-based. An oft-cited 2018 analysis of the global food industry showed that for many individuals, eliminating the consumption of animal products from their diet was the most significant action they could make to reduce their impact on the environment. Still, vegan foods environmental impact varies greatly depending on the local context of both consumers and producers.

Culture is one such local context we must consider. Classifying veganism as an ethically superior diet can have harmful impacts on marginalized communities. Universalist classifications of animal food products as morally reprehensible stigmatize some cultures traditional consumption practices, highlighting how avoiding absolutism in veganism is important. Such stigma is seen in Northern Canada, where some Indigenous groups have been attacked for their traditional seal hunting practices. When viewed in the context of centuries-long oppression, it becomes clear that imposing Westernized values and dietary practices in this manner is a form of colonialistic cultural suppression.

Veganisms absolutism is also harmful in the pursuit of environmental sustainability. Environmental sustainability depends on where the production takes place and what the critical environmental issues are in that region, Dr. Hanna Tuomisto, professor of sustainable food systems, told the HPR. Tuomisto discussed how in Finland, many lakes are kept healthy by fishing practices which prevent overcrowding, making the consumption of that fish environmentally sustainable for the region. Similarly, in some Arctic communities, most plants cannot sustainably grow and must be transported over long distances for consumption, making nutritionally efficient foods like seal meat more sustainable. These cases do not comply with the global trend, showing that considering sustainable food systems at a focused local level will reveal many complexities that a dietary focus alone will not capture.

This local analytical focus has the potential to reveal innovations that can make animal products, and the entire food industry, more sustainable. Tuomisto spoke about the rise of mixed farming systems that, by combining livestock and crop production, reduce many environmental damages present in other more intensive forms of production. By using, say, the manure from the livestock directly on the crops, these farms eliminate the carbon emissions of resource transportation. Efficient solutions like mixed farming systems emerge from focusing on the production of food and not the products themselves.

Focusing on production over products is furthermore essential to truly eat ethically. The world agricultural system is extremely exploitative, and this fact does not change between plant-based and omnivorous diets. Today in the United States, it is estimated that 75% of farmworkers are undocumented, opening the door for rampant mistreatment and underpayment by employers due to the threat of deportation. On average, farmworkers are paid just under $14 per hour for intense physical labor, and wage theft, sexual harassment, and chronic exposure to toxic chemicals are all too common. Globally, approximately 3.5 million agricultural workers are enslaved people about 530,000 of them in developed economies. The issue of worker exploitation is present in essentially all major food companies, with few making significant progress in combating the use of forced labor in producing their product. Ethical eating must include justice for these workers behind the staples of a vegan diet.

Big Foods Looming Presence

Despite the complexities of sustainable and ethical eating that veganism does not capture, it is empirically clear that the livestock industry is responsible for a great deal of both environmental degradation and worker abuse. According to advocacy groups like Uprooted and Rising, the titans of the food industry, also known as Big Food, are to blame for these issues. These issues are fueled by a handful of corporations, with the assistance of complacent governments, turning a blind eye to worker exploitation, neglecting environmental impact, and cutting corners on quality to push out more processed and profitable products.

The industrial food system is both the product of White supremacy and colonialism, and helps to maintain them from the colonialism which determined the ownership of farming land and the agricultural system of today to the systemic exploitation of workers of color ingrained in North American food systems. This connection is also apparent in the barriers the U.S. Department of Agriculture has placed and continues to place against Black farm ownership, as well as the disproportionate impact poor-quality food has on the health of marginalized communities. Big Food frequently partakes in exploitative practices and commoditizes food to the point where local and personal connections are all but insignificant, making it easy for environmental and ethical transgressions to go unchecked.

For Uprooted and Rising, a holistic approach centering food sovereignty and justice for both the exploited earth and the exploited people who produce our food is the solution. Food sovereignty advocates for peoples right to define their own food and agriculture systems, by placing local economies and the needs of those who produce and consume food at the heart of the food system. In the current system, corporations like Coca-Cola and Unilever hold a concentration of power [in which] small and midsize producers really dont stand a chance. The solution to a systemic issue like this is not only uncaptured by simple solutions like veganism, it is sometimes threatened by them.

According to Uprooted and Rising representative Tina White, veganism is not holistic enough to actually get to the roots of the problem. A focus on vilifying one type of food is not only an incomplete solution; it is a misdirection of blame. Many Indigenous practices exist outside of the extractive Western food system and are fully sustainable while including meat consumption. Food sovereignty advocates have fought to protect these and other traditional practices, as not only are they fundamentally incongruous to the livestock industry, but they too exist in opposition to the larger food industry as sustainable, locally sourced, and culturally significant forms of nourishment. Food [is] at the nexus of so many things, just like land and water, said White. It is cultural, traditional, and individual. A broad-brush ideology such as veganism remains ignorant of this, in the same manner that colonialism does.

In fact, many vegan dietary practices are a part of the Big Food system. Popular plant-based alternatives to animal products like the Beyond or Impossible Burgers are still overly processed. Though they do not carry the environmental consequences of meat, specifically, they remain problematic in their contributions to deforestation, habit destruction, and carbon emissions during transportation and processing. Furthermore, many Big Food companies have begun to capitalize on consumer concerns with sustainability by introducing plant-based products and greenwashing themselves as environmentally conscious. Companies like Tyson Foods and Nestle both rank extremely low on workers rights and are major polluters. Tyson Foods pollutes Americas waterways more than ExxonMobil, and Nestle is the worlds third largest plastic polluter. Nonetheless, they have been quick to release green products and vague environmental plans for the planet. Veggie burgers are not a solution to Big Foods problems; they are a distraction.

Moving Towards Real Food

Big Foods complicity in unsustainable and unethical food systems is why Uprooted and Rising, in a world bursting with dietary advice, declines to prescribe a one-size-fits-all dietary solution. White stated that the optimal dietary choices for an individual are dictated by where youre located and dictated by how much money you make. Rather than claim an absolutist diet like veganism to be the solution, Uprooted and Rising holds what they call real food as the gold standard.

Real food is produced sustainably and ethically; it is fair trade, respectful of food sovereignty, and locally based. Most of the livestock industry in the West does not fall under this standard. But real food also does not include plant-based foods grown with labor violations. As White told the HPR, We want to focus on actually how the food is produced. [Are] those farm workers unionized? Are they actually community-based? Are they a public corporation that isnt held accountable? Are they using harmful production practices? These are all central concerns in determining real sustainable and ethical food. White explained that though agribusiness produces food extracted from the earth, it also extracts labor, especially from Black and Brown bodies, and that this consideration is just as important as the former. We have to recognize that its a specific way of producing food that has cost; its not eating meat itself.

It is clear that industrial foods exploitative system is the source of unsustainable eating practices. However, a diet full of real food is an unrealistic expectation for many. Tuomisto stated that while the current consumption levels of animal proteins in developed countries are not sustainable, its quite difficult to get consumers to completely switch to a plant-based diet its not a simple solution. Uprooted and Rising takes dietary advice a step further; they said that regardless, individual purchasing is not enough to combat this type of food system and to address the root problems in it. Instead, advocacy for transparency, systemic changes, and alternate purchasing by large consumers of food like universities are the changes with the greatest potential impact.

Despite the immense problems in the food industry, vegans like Ulusoy are optimistic. He claimed that tackling the livestock industry, an undeniable contributor to the Big Food system, is just a starting point, the most pragmatic solution that exists for us to actually exercise. For individuals with less access to a higher standard of local and fair trade food, and for most individuals unable to contribute to the transformation of the industrial food system as a whole, adopting a plant-based diet is a worthwhile change. Going vegan is, in many cases, an effective treatment to the disease of exploitative food systems. But for the sake of food sovereignty, workers rights, and hope of a longer-term transformation, it is important to understand: It is not the cure.

How ingredient technology can spark consumer loyalty and keep plant-based products on supermarket shelves

Its something of a paradox that one of the regions with the highest meat consumption in the world also ranks among the global top three for veganism. According to the Vegan Society, only the UK has more vegans than Australia and New Zealand.

In Australia, a plant-based diet is now the preferred choice of some 2.5 million consumers just over 12% of the population. That includes vegans, vegetarians and the growing number of flexitarians, who still eat meat and dairy products occasionally but prioritise plant-based food products for health and sustainability reasons.

Many food companies have already tapped into this opportunity. This much is clear from Euromonitor statistics which show the market for plant-based milk alternatives grew 5% year-on-year from 2015 to 2019. Within plant-based alternatives to meat, compound annual growth was 11 per cent in the same period.

The question is: what should brand owners do now to maintain a loyal consumer following in the future?

Michelle Lee, regional marketing director at DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences, gives her view on the developing plant-based market.

What we have seen is that many of the plant-based launches do not attract high repeat purchases. This is partly because consumers often buy them out of curiosity alone, and partly because manufacturers are still learning about consumer likes and dislikes within this emerging mainstream category.

Plant-based and meat-like

Within meat alternatives, one persistent challenge is to recreate the taste and texture of real meat with plant raw materials, as consumers continue to expect a meat-like flavour, succulence and bite.

This is where the newest technology within plant proteins and stabiliser systems can help brands capture consumer loyalty. Textured soy proteins, for instance, can simulate the distinctive bite of a traditional burger, chicken breast or beef jerky. They also enable the protein claim that many consumers look out for on packaging.

Beyond dairy alternativesCompared to meat alternatives, the market situation for plant-based beverages and yoghurt-style products is somewhat different. Here, consumers are already moving beyond dairy alternatives towards a category that celebrates the novel tastes and textures plant proteins can provide. As Global Datas 2019 survey of Australian consumers revealed, non-dairy drinks based on soy, oats, nuts and seeds are already widely accepted. Among them, oat-based product launches have the highest growth rate of all.

Oats are a familiar cereal known for their high nutritional quality and mild, nutty flavour with no off-notes. So they satisfy consumers health and taste criteria easily. But, for manufacturers, there are several technical challenges to solve when producing appealing and shelf-stable oat-based products, Lee says.

Resolving oat-based issuesOat-based coffee creamers are one example where the difficulty lies in delivering a delicious milk-like foam without protein separation when the creamer is mixed into hot coffee. Application trials at DuPont have shown that a combination of oat, soluble fibre and carob protein is a possible solution, resulting in a stable UHT beverage with a creamy mouthfeel and light oat flavour.

In yoghurt-style oat snacks, the right selection of starter, protective and probiotic cultures can optimise texture, delay spoilage and contribute to a healthy image. Label-friendly stabiliser blends and plant proteins add extra functionality.

Textural limitations and consumer demand for clean product labels may have restricted plant-based innovation in the past. With todays ingredient technology, however, manufacturers have many opportunities to spark consumer interest and keep it.
