Katie Lee on Plant-Based Cooking and Her Obsession With Veggie Burgers – Green Matters

As of 2020, even if you don't follow a strictly vegan or vegetarian diet, you've most likely considered cutting down on your meat consumption at some point or another, whether it was for the sake of your health, for the sake of the environment, or both. Even longtime culinary professionals, such as Food Network chef Katie Lee, have started gravitating towards plant-based cooking.

Green Matters caught up with Katie Lee to discuss all things veggie, from her history with vegetarianism, to the meatless weeknight dinners she enjoys with her husband, her favorite veggie burger recipe, and the work she's currently doing to fight food insecurity.

Between "meat masters" like Guy Fieri and Bobby Flay, many people associate the Food Network with, well, a lot of meat. However, Lee tells us that she largely gravitates towards a plant-based diet, because that's simply how she was raised. For a few years in high school and through college, Lee followed a vegetarian diet, and she continues to predominantly eat vegetables for the sake of her health.

"When I was in high school, I actually went vegetarian, so most of my high school, college years were completely vegetarian, and my mom was as well. We were always really into eating a lot of vegetables," Lee says.

"And then I started eating meat again, but I look at my plate, and I make it 70-80 percent vegetables, and 20-30 percent other stuff... that was the way my grandmother ate, and I just think its a great way to keep yourself in check, and to really fill up on those good veggies."

She adds, "As far as plant-based cooking goes, [my husband and I] love to make mushroom bolognese, an eggplant Parmesan, and I always have tofu and tempeh in my fridge to make a quick stir-fry with those. [Plant-based eating] is something thats still definitely a part of my life."

Lee also tells us these plant-based recipes have proven to be quite popular on her current Food Network series, The Kitchen.

"I actually found that our viewers really gravitate towards these plant-based recipes I always get a lot of messages from people telling me theyre making them and exploring new flavors and new cooking techniques," Lee explains.

"Over the summer I did a grilled tofu taco with a peach black bean salsa that was really good and popular. Ive even made a carrot hot dog! We try all sorts of recipes."

Being a new mom, Lee tells us that she is constantly seeking out simple meals to make for dinner, and as a longtime burger enthusiast, she's developed a burning passion for Gardein's latest offering, the Ultimate Plant-Based Burger. She says she and her husband always like to have them on hand, adding she's especially partial to them as a meatless alternative and for a solid protein source.

"[Gardein burgers] are very satisfying and Im a burger person... to have this on hand in my freezer makes it very convenient, especially because I had a baby five weeks ago," Lee explains.

"My husband are always looking at each other and saying what are we going to eat for dinner.' And since theres 19 grams of protein in each one, Im breastfeeding so I like getting my protein in. Its just a really great thing to have on hand," she says.

Lee even entered the annual New York Food and Wine Festival's Burger Bash this year with a nostalgic spin on Gardein's latest offering.

"I won the very first Burger Bash back in 2008 Im basically a dinosaur at this point in the food world," she laughs. "But I won that with a recipe that was my grandmothers for a patty melt. We call it a Logan County Burger because shes from Logan County, West Virginia."

"I decided to update it this year, for the virtual Burger Bash, and Im using Gardein. [I did] a patty melt and just kind of amping it up since it's the Ultimate Gardein burger, Im making my Ultimate Patty Melt. Im doing griddled onions, a little special sauce in there, and of course lots of melted American cheese and its on buttered toasted bread... Its like a grilled cheese with a burger tucked inside."

If you're looking to make a vegan copycat version, you aren't alone.

Along with abiding by a "flexitarian" diet for her health and for the environment, Lee is also working with the Food Bank for New York City, because during the ongoing pandemic, food insecurity is currently at an all-time high.

"Of course with the state of the world right now with COVID, the food bank has needed a lot of support," Lee tells Green Matters. "So, Ive just been working closely with them and trying to raise awareness so people make donations and keep these food banks full so they can support the people of their communities."

Revisit Paul and Linda McCartneys glorious appearance on The Simpsons – Far Out Magazine

On October 15th, 1995, the world watched on as two bastions of pop culture came together when former Beatles man Paul McCartney and his wife, Linda, made a joyous appearance on Americas favourite yellow family show, The Simpsons. Although it may seem like a jovial thing for the couple to do, the episode titled Lisa The Vegetarian is all about the theme of vegetarianism which provided Paul and Linda with a platform to discuss the subject in a self-deprecating, humourous fashion to a brand new audience. It spread their message with a smile.

The episode follows Lisa on her path to becoming a vegetarian after she decided she could no longer eat meat after bonding with a lamb at a petting zoo. Her schoolmates and family members ridicule her for her beliefs but, with the help of Apu as well as Paul and Linda McCartney, she commits to vegetarianism. It was a conversation that even in 1995, was barely being given any room to breathe. On The Simpsons, it was the McCartneys who found a platform.

Lisa The Vegetarian would go down as a stone-cold Simpsons classic episode that featured the hilarious You Dont Win Friends With Salad song and Homers disbelief that ham, bacon and pork came from the same magical animal, on top of the McCartney cameo. It would go on to become the deserved recipient of two awards, an Environmental Media Award and a Genesis Award, for highlighting environmental and animal issues, respectively.

At the time the episode was being written, Paul McCartney was the only living member of The Beatles who had never appeared on The Simpsons. John Lennon died before the show was created, but Ringo Starr and George Harrison had guest-starred in 1991 and 1993, respectively with aplomb.

The staff wanted to bring McCartney onto the show and David Mirkin thought Lisa the Vegetarian would be an attractive story since McCartney is a vegetarian himself. Macca agreed to appear but requested that Lisa remain a vegetarian for the rest of the series, rather than revert to meat-eating in the next episode.

The staff promised that she would remain a vegetarian, resulting in one of the few permanent character changes made in the show and McCartney has been a stickler to make sure that they stuck to their promise. Mirkin revealed earlier this year in an interview with the Radio Times that every time he bumps into McCartney, he always checks. And hes always surrounded by nine or ten lawyers so its quite frightening.

We were a bit worried that she would be a vegetarian for a week, then Homer would persuade her to eat a hot dog, McCartney has since told GQ magazine. The producers of the programme assured us that she would remain that way, and they kept their word, Macca added.

McCartneys wife Linda was also asked to appear in the episode and it was an offer she simply couldnt refuse. She told Entertainment Weekly that the episode was a chance for her and her husband to spread the vegetarian word to a wider audience. Following Lindas tragic death in 1998, The Simpsons dedicated an episode in her memory which executive producer Mike Scully said it just seemed like the right thing to do. Everyone here was surprised and saddened by her death.

The fact that the McCartneys werent willing to turn themselves yellow unless it was could spread a message that they truly believed in and devoted large parts of their lives to, speaks highly of their characters. The couple were among the most famous names on the planet at this point and didnt need the publicity that appearing on The Simpsons provided them with.

This was a compromise which literally had no negative consequences and is still as heartwarming to watch 25 years later.

The nonprofit organization won the award for its work on Diving Past Boundaries, where two young men with spinal cord injuries joined Diveheart and were able to enjoy the wonders of the underwater world.

Healthy Living focus of 13th Annual Health and Fitness – The Light and Champion

The 13th Annual Health and Fitness Fair, presented by Cline Family Medicine on Friday drew a crowd interested in free health screenings, loads of health related information, networking and giveaways.

The fair was free to the public and featured more than 30 vendors with give aways and door prizes.

The event was held from 9:00 a.m. Until 12 noon. Gold Sponsors Focused Care of Center, Hope Community Medicine and Nacogdoches Medical Center also helped in making the event a success.

This years theme was Healthy Living. Flu shots were provided and a Scavenger Hunt was held again with three drawings at the end of the Health Fair. Prizes include ear buds, a healthy gift basket and a 32-Inch Flat Screen TV. Attendees and vendors are invited to participate in finding items throughout the fair.

After the COVID-19 spread and life threat over the world it has severely effected the socio-economic, travel, tourism, health and medical challenges. The UN Division of Sustainable Development States, End hunger, achieve food, security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. 193 countries around the world unanimously decided and committed in ending all forms of malnutrition by 2030 with the aim of amplifying awareness and action about the malnutrition and hunger as well as obesity to the larger extent around the world and ensure safe and nutritious food for all. We all know that poor and unhealthy diet causes higher deaths than Cancer, Tuberculosis, heart attack and higher blood pressure. Well balanced diet minimises physical ailments and decreases our ageing process. Our happiness is a reflection of good health- a divine wealth. The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) observes World Food Day on 16 October to pay tribute to its inaugural day.

Despite the scientific progress and prosperity, we have failed miserably in the food production, proper food processing, equal food distribution and its procurement. As our global population reaches to 10 billion by 2050, the UN has its commitment of providing secure, healthy and plentiful for nearly 2 billion people. Nearly 80% of chronic diseases are controllable by healthy nutrition, frolic activity. People who take care of their life enjoy happy and blessed life, lowering the risk of long-term disease or fatal injury. Good food helps in more sustainable and efficient recovery of vulnerable disease. What we sow today may reap tomorrow. By collective collaboration of individual and government we can improve our food system and remain healthy. Preserving food is vital response during Corona crisis. Doctors say early detection is key to fighting the disease.

SEATTLE - October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and some facilities are getting creative and taking mammograms to the streets.

Hearing the words"you have cancer" can be shocking, isolating and downright unimaginable. For health coach Deborah Enos, her breast cancer diagnosis was absolutely unacceptable.

Out of the 10 risk factors for the disease, Deborah only has two.

"Im a woman, and Iam over 50. Thats it.

While the diagnosis was unfathomable for Deborah, things could have been very different if she had waited, or worse, skipped her mammogramthis year.

Instead of being the stage Iam, which is stage zero, which is so treatable, my doctor said Icould have been easily a stage two, a one or two by the time Icame back.

Doctors say breast cancer doesnt discriminate and women should start getting annual mammograms between 40 and 45 years old.

While there are obviously some fears of going to doctors offices in the middle of a pandemic, most facilities are taking extreme precautions to keep patients safe.If youre still not convinced, there are other options to consider.Swedish Medical Center deploys 2 mobile mammography coaches into communities where women may not have access or not have had the chance to get a mammogram,

Laura Roberts is a manager of the program.

"We decided that the mobile coach is probably the safest place for a patient to be because it is easily contained," she says. "We additionally break down those barriers that you might have within certain ethnicities, and we just bring the coach right to them, then theyre not afraid.

Through the program, a patient's insurance is billed, but if that is not an option, the team will help line up resources to make it possible,as they stress the importance of screening mammography is really, early detection.

Breast cancer caught early enough is totally treatable. Theres a significant decrease in mortality by doing routine screening mammography.

In a normal year, the coaches will see roughy 6,500 patients, but are seeing a decline because of the coronavirus.

Last year, they were able to diagnose 14 cancer cases through mobile mammography.

Deborah says the test was a game-changer for her.

The mammogram,its not perfect, but it caught thisand Iam so grateful that it did.

Deborah has already had two surgeries, and says because it was caught so early, she doesnt have to ungero chemotherapy, but she will do radiation.

"I am on my soapbox now saying to women, honestly, if you can go out and get your nails done, you can get a mammogram, it is about the same amount of exposure as far as being with another person.

Deborah is taking a class to learn more about breast cancer as she is adament about helping other women who are struggling with their own diagnosis.

Truck driver Carlos Soto understands how hard it can be to stay fit as a truck driver, but instead of giving in to the ease of an unhealthy lifestyle, he has made his health and wellbeing a priority with just a few changes to your exercise routine and food.

Soto spends at least 10 hours a day driving his truck up to 4,000 miles a week not exactly the perfect formula for a fit lifestyle so he finds whatever opportunities he can to work out and eat healthy, even if it takes a little extra focus.

As a trucker, all you do is pretty much eat, sleep and drive, and its easy to be unhealthy, he said to Mens Health. So many people in my line of work get knee problems, diabetes and have high blood pressure, because youre not moving and eating crap. Your body just starts shutting down. It feels like thats true for 90% of the industry. Theres a lot of truckers in their 30s or 40s who are already walking like 80-year-old men when they leave their truck, because they dont walk or run or get any activity.

As many as 50% of American truck drivers are obese according to the National Institute of Health, and Soto says he used to be one of them, weighing in at 250 pounds. But once he decided to make a change by working out at home, he started seeing results and knew he had to take his new healthy-living initiative on the road.

My body fat went way down, he says. It was important for me to maintain muscle in my fitness journey, though. I do more heavy weights than cardio for my workouts, and my muscle has gone up as a result Ive been able, through workouts, to never have problems with my lower back. Im sitting for 10 hours, so I often emphasize my quads through machine workouts and exercises like deadlifts and squats to keep them strong.

He soon realized that his new healthy lifestyle had more impact on his life than just the visible changes.

I feel amazing these days, he says. My energy levels and strength after many years are totally different. Im stronger and healthier, even after so many years of driving. I wanted to shock the stereotype of all truck drivers being out of shape My ultimate goal, though, is to look at myself in the mirror each morning and feel healthy and happy. I want to play soccer with my son and be in shape for that. I want to be healthy for my job and have a long, healthy and productive career.

Now, Soto makes a concerted effort to workout when he can, meal-prep healthy meals for OTR, and never lose focus on what matters most his wellbeing.

Sometimes its very hard, often the only time I have is around 2 to 4 in the morning. Sometimes Ill plan my routes to target 24 hour Life Time clubs. I try to get to Life Time the night before, park my truck, sleep in the parking lot and in the morning after 8 hours of sleep, I wake up, work out, get breakfast and hit the road for 10 more hours.

Although it takes effort and intention, Soto says its worth every extra step to feel as good as he does and keep his body moving.

For people who are new to fitness, I always tell them that you have to do it for yourself. Do it to be more productive and healthy for your lifestyle and family. I know a lot of people, they dont want to have health problems. Exercise is a great way to fight that. Its also amazing to feel good about yourself. I meet a lot of depressed truck drivers who are overweight. Even the money theyre making right now, theyre miserable. Everything can be accomplished with a few changes to your exercise routine and food.

9 exercises to do while waiting in line to vote – Houston Chronicle

The first day of early voting is far from over, and more than 70,000 people have already cast a vote in Harris County.

Long lines have been reported at about 10 voting locations, so it's important to remember you can vote at any Harris County location during early voting, which lasts until Oct. 30.

"The most important exercise to do is (your) exercise to vote, so way to go for getting out there and making your voice heard," said Shelby Saylor, association director of healthy living of YMCA of Greater Houston and a personal trainer.

Saylor and SilverSneakers 2019 Instructor of the Year Eliot Perez have some quick socially-distanced exercises you can do while waiting in line to perform your civic duty.

1. Calf raises

Stand with your legs slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Lift your heels off the ground for a few seconds at a time for 10 reps. Repeat as often as you like.

2. Stationary knee lifts

Stand with your legs hip-width apart. Slowly lift your right knee up to your chest. Set it back down and repeat, with your left knee. These are also called "high knees," but refrain from jumping while in line.

3. Ankle twists

Ankle twists are great for mobility. Stand up straight and lift the right foot a few inches off the ground. Try to trace the alphabet with your big toes, which will exercise the ankle. Do the same with the left foot. Trace the alphabet at least three times with both feet.

4. Squats

Stand with legs slightly more than shoulder-width apart, and squeeze your glutes when you sit down into the squat and again, when you stand up. When youre in the bottom of the squat, make sure your torso is not out beyond your knees. If your knees start hurting, take a rest. For toned inner thighs, do the squats with a narrower stance. Do reps of 10-12 and repeat as often as you like, or hold the squat until the line moves again.

5. Lunges

Stand with your legs more than shoulder-width apart and lunge forward with the right leg. Try to keep the lunge stance for as long as you're in that spot in line. When the line moves again, switch to the other leg.

6. Wall-sit

This only applies if you're near a wall. Lean with your back on the wall and move to a sitting position with your knees and hips making a 90-degree angle this strengthens your quadriceps. Hold until the line moves again.

7. Sun gods or arm circles

Stand up straight and lift your arms to shoulder height. Make small circles with your hands, and gradually work up to bigger circles at the shoulder. Do reps of 20 and repeat as often as you like.

8. Stretch

Stand up straight, bend over and try to touch your toes. Swing your arms back and forth. Rotate your head backward and forward, side-to-side.

9. Jog in place

Make sure you have space between you and others in line before you attempt to jog in place. Also, if you don't think you can do this with a mask on, don't try it.

Another leading factor why Indians possess the highest risk of CVDs is the consistent lifestyle change they have undergone over the last few decades.

Some major reasons for the ongoing cardiac disease crisis are unhealthy diet, air pollution, high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes and obesity. Considering the given factors, it is crucial that each one of us must take a step back and start working towards ensuring a healthy heart.

Ensuring a healthy heart not only means living a healthy lifestyle but also means securing yourself against the massive expenses of unexpected CVDs. In the last few months of therapy and interactions with people across the globe, I have heard of people moving homes and countries, choosing to homeschool children, mending and healing relationships, choosing minimalism, quitting jobs and discovering new passions or following their long-buried dreams. This crisis led a lot of us to take notice that what we were constantly invested in or distracted with, was trying to control things around us, an idea Covid-19 shattered, loud enough for the world to hear.

Covid 19 exposed us to many changes all at once. Staying home all day, for several days, with kids and family, working out of home, staying indoors, no weekend roadside chaat, having to wash hands multiple times a day and no socialising. Probably the hardest one for us Indians, is maintaining a two-arm distance from others and not breathing down the neck of the person ahead of us in a line. These are only a few in the list of many adjustments.

As we made these lifestyle and behavioural changes, we swallowed the tough pills of loss of control, limited freedom, harder physical labour, social isolation, ambiguity and loss. One of the biggest emotional ordeals the world felt in waves was fear. The virus poked and tugged at some vulnerability in us all. As it stealthily penetrated all borders, air, land and sea, leaving no cave or cover for safety, one thing became crystal clear, the world as we knew it, was going to change.

With subjective circumstances and abilities to cope, we learnt new ways of living, working, surviving, nurturing and communicating the best we could, initially with much gusto. There was a sudden shift in active neuronal pathways and staying home, cuddling kids and walking aimlessly around the house in pyjamas was gratifying. Videos of celebrities sweeping homes, baking cakes and cooking curry became a way of saying, We have got this.

Covid-19, unencumbered by racial injustice, Bollywood scandals, US elections and human violence comparable to the viruss own sinister intent and exploitation, proliferated and shook us some more. Pushed to the edge of endurance, fear for our loved ones, uncertainty no matter how much we tried to get a grasp around our tomorrows, we were forced to learn and stretch new muscles to quieten ourselves, cope and survive.

Alongside, something else happened. Arrested in the quiet of our concrete home and mental walls, hearing our inner voices, uninterrupted by social chatter or peer pressure, caressing our partners and holding our children without being elbowed by external distractions, observing our breath and realising how that is the only most precious possession we have, we found ourselves awakening to deeper realisations. We began questioning, reviewing, rewiring and finally focussing on what matters the most.

There has been a significant tide-shift on mental health awareness, a kind I honestly did not think I would see in my lifetime. Ironically, it took a perilous threat to the body for us to understand that the quality of our life depends upon health, attitude and grit of the mind. Depression, anxiety, PTSD and emotional wellbeing have become admissible conversations and therapy is being spoken of as a valuable intervention. Emotions and empathy have drawn the attention of corporates, news and magazines. Social media is inundated with content on healing, health, family and growth. School children suddenly want to opt for psychology as it a worthy career option.

Nutrition, better quality of sleep, exercise, yoga, meditation and breathwork have become irreplaceable for a healthy lifestyle. The Bhagavad Gita, Rig Ved and Yoga-sutra by Rishi Patanjali have listed the benefits and powers in yoga and meditation but paradoxically it is the pandemic of 2020 that will go down in history as having brought about a health revolution.

In the wake of this pandemic, we have found ourselves a voice, a mind and the resolve to prioritise health, happiness, realisation of what and who we value the most, and even if some havent so far, at least we know the revolution has begun.

How curing loneliness can increase longevity and health J. – The Jewish News of Northern California

Zara Jaffe, president of the Senior Friendship Club of Peninsula Temple Beth El (which meets at the Peninsula JCC), does not mince words: Loneliness is lethal. Zara should know. She is 95 years old, and boasts that two of the 20 to 25 members of her group are centenarians. She is proud that her friendship club fights loneliness head-on.

Dr. Vivek Murthy, former U.S. surgeon general in the Obama administration, discusses the impact of loneliness on mental and physical health in his book Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World. Those who battle loneliness are affected mentally and physically, resulting in increased risk of depression, anxiety, addiction, self-harm, weakened immune system, diabetes, dementia, heart disease, sleep disturbance and premature death. He explains that the reduction of lifespan due to loneliness is similar to smoking 15 cigarettes per day.

Loneliness is not about being alone. Its an internal feeling of isolation, the sense that if you disappeared tomorrow, no one would notice. In 2018, Cigna surveyed over 20,000 adults and found that 46 percent of respondents felt lonely or left out. Contrary to what we might predict about loneliness affecting mainly an older population, it was young adults in Generation Z (ages 18 to 23) who were the loneliest, followed by millennials (ages 24 to 39). After the pandemic hit, a survey by the company SocialPro revealed that 31 percent of Americans feel lonelier because of the coronavirus situation.

Being around people does not mean one cannot feel lonely. As a freshman in college I lived in a 1,000-person dormitory, played violin in my college symphony and went to classes with hundreds of others. I dared not admit to myself that I was lonely, probably because of the stigma associated with it. The following year I joined a Jewish fraternity, and I closely observed others to learn how to be more social. As a result, my feeling of loneliness decreased.

Dr. Carla Perissinotto, a geriatrician at UCSF, remarks that even before the pandemic, loneliness has been a serious public health problem. In her research, those who are more likely to be lonely include women, those of lower socioeconomic status, and minority populations. In contrast to the Cigna poll, she has found that there is a greater risk of loneliness with aging due to a combination of life transitions, such as retirement or losing a spouse, and having hearing and visual impairments.

If this pandemic teaches us anything it is that, in addition to our physical health, social health matters, too. However, once this pandemic ends (and I am optimistic it will), we may not immediately bounce back from our isolation. So what can we do to improve our social health? Dr. Murthy advises service as a powerful antidote to loneliness. Call a friend, do small acts of kindness or volunteer. How often do you hear volunteers state, I get more out of this than I give?

Post-pandemic you might pursue connections and service through your synagogue, your local Jewish community center, Bay Area Jewish Healing Center, or Jewish Family and Childrens Services, or by volunteering with your favorite symphony, art museum, library, or community theater. We should do the things that we find most meaningful. As a result, we will become less isolated and more resilient against loneliness.

At the end of my phone call with Zara Jaffe, she demonstrated what she preached. She invited me to join her Senior Friendship Club. This is what the club is about creating friendships and community, celebrating birthdays and holidays, and simply being together. Whether in person or on Zoom, the Friendship Club has been meeting weekly for 40 years, and there is no excuse even a pandemic to stop them now. Loneliness is too big a threat.

Sergio Ramos is a freak. It's impossible to deny that fact.

Now, Sergio, if you're reading this, I mean it in the most complimentary way. Not a hint of denigration or disrespect.

But facts are facts.

We live in an age when players are gasping for respite, a breather for their tired limbs to regenerate. Not only that but the merest pause from the endless, vicious cycle of: train, prepare mentally, play, recuperate, train, prepare mentally, play, etc. so that creative players can regain sharpness of instinct and even little flames of inspiration and daring. They all fear their sparks of genius vision and invention will be extinguished.

The evidence that we are squeezing more out of our elite footballers than they should be giving is not only staring us in the face, it's adopting an aggressive "Why don't you care?" expression. In recent days there were reminders -- futile, I'm sure.

Kevin De Bruyne, a mere stripling at 29 compared to gnarled veteran Ramos (34), warned: "I've played flat out for two years, but nobody listens to the players. It worries me sometimes. Your body is screaming out for a rest but nobody listens to the players."

Then, after Spain's flat and creativity-starved 1-0 win over Switzerland, 23-year-old Pau Torres admitted that the players have felt the strain of a three-game week for their clubs followed by a midweek friendly in Portugal and then this test against the disciplined, athletic, hard-pressing Swiss. Then there was the 7,600-kilometre round trip to Kiev, for a match against Ukraine, to be faced and suffered.

It really is nonstop for these guys.

Mental and physical tiredness against the Swiss cost La Roja those split seconds where an invented action, a brilliant piece of sharp passing or an individual skill properly separates truly top-class players from those who are truly giving their top effort. "But there can't be any such thing as tiredness when you're playing for your country," Torres said.

Then you have Arsene Wenger arguing, while promoting his imminent autobiography, that "the next game changer is neuroscience." Why does he put forward this idea? According to Wenger, "Because we are at the end of the improvement of physical speed."

Rate him or not, one of the modern era's most successful and epoch-changing managers believes that, athletically, elite football is already operating at absolute maximum -- pedal to the floor. These remarkable objectives from a remarkable man need putting in context.

First, Ramos's voracious hunger and stamina. From his debut match for Spain (at 18 he became the country's youngest debutant for 55 years), of all the 17 players used that day, only Joaquin is still a professional footballer. Ditto his debut in a World Cup: the 4-0 thrashing of Ukraine in Germany 2006. Of all starters and substitutes who played that afternoon, only Cesc Fabregas has lasted this long as an active pro. Even if you take the starting XI from the first international final he won, the 1-0 defeat of Germany at Euro 2008, only he, Fabregas, David Silva and Andres Iniesta are still in the game.

And the subject of this man's trophy lifts is important.

Ramos has won the World Cup and two European Championships for Spain, rewriting history, but that didn't sate him as it did others. While teammates, greats at that, silently slipped away -- Iniesta, Iker Casillas, David Villa, Jordi Alba, Pedro -- Ramos powers on.

For his club, the trophy list is gargantuan. Four Champions Leagues, five La Liga titles and a cupboard full of other medals that lesser men don't even get a sniff of.

He still isn't satisfied.

Ramos, over his career, hasn't done injuries. That's not to say he's utterly immune -- just fantastically robust. Nor does Ramos pick and choose when he plays for his country. If Spain want him, he's there. Tired? Sore? Family commitments? Rather be fresh for his club? Can't be bothered with the trip to the Faroe Islands, Moscow or Minsk? Those ideas, according to Ramos, are for wimps.

He's the all-time winningest footballer in international history, having overtaken his friend and colleague Casillas, and he's the top-scoring defender in the vast history of football nations pitting themselves against one another.

And he isn't slowing down.

In the past two years, aged from 32 to 34, Ramos has played 108 matches for club and country. In that time, both Spain and Madrid have developed a distinct Ramos dependency. It's not that Real Madrid simply cannot win without him, it's that they lose an essential aggression, competitiveness and self-belief without their leader.

Look at the debacle against Manchester City in the away leg of last season's Champions League round of 16. Without Ramos by his side, Raphael Varane made horrible mistakes, and once they were 2-1 down Madrid utterly lacked the chutzpah, the "We're not beaten until the stadium floodlights are switched off" attitude with which Ramos bristles.

Compare that to how he almost single-handedly bullied all domestic rivals out of the way until Real Madrid won the title after La Liga's restart. Ten matches, nine wins, one draw, during which their 34-year-old central defender scored six times -- including the only goal in consecutive victories over Getafe and Athletic Club.

Nor should anyone overlook his record of big goals in Champions League finals. When Madrid were about to lose to Atletico Madrid in the 2014 Lisbon showpiece, Ramos didn't just score the most dramatic of added-time equalisers. No. He told me that he was thinking of his recently deceased grandfather as the minutes ticked away. Thinking to himself, "I can't, I won't let this match finish this way." And he didn't.

From that day to this, Madrid haven't found someone to replicate the Ramos effect. Cristiano Ronaldo was cut from the same cloth but when, if, Ramos ever departs this team, it'll be hell on earth to find anyone with the same mix of extraordinary talent, athleticism, technique, character and sheer, naked will to win.

It's the same for Spain. In his past 17 internationals, and please remember we are talking about a defender, he's scored nine times. He's their most potent striker. And while Luis Enrique has some productive scorers scattered throughout his squad, if Ramos doesn't hit the net, La Roja often struggle and look dry in front of goal.

Throughout his career he's taken 31 penalties and missed just three. Most importantly, though, he's scored 22 consecutively for Madrid and Spain since he last failed. He is metronomic from the spot.

The key thing to understand about Ramos is that he's a buccaneer, someone from times gone by. He's an adventurer, a rascal, someone who lives life to the absolute limit; someone who sees horizons where others see walls and boundaries; someone who, when young, truly wanted to be a bull fighter; a man who's always wanted not just to win but to tilt against the odds, the bigger the better; and he's someone who simply loves the training, playing and competing involved in football.

Recently, he told UEFA: "I'm full of motivation. You have to reset every year and start from scratch; to live each triumph, every trophy win, as if it were a completely new thing. I think it's very positive to continue enjoying football like this, without looking back, without stopping to think what you have done or achieved. This is how it feels like there is a whole life ahead of you when your body is trying to tell you that you can't do it any longer.

"In principle, just so long as I'm as full of inspiration, pride and hunger, then I'll treat the World Cup in Qatar as another challenge. I want to play in it and increase my number of caps. If I can make it to 200 appearances for Spain then all the better."

They were born just two months and 990 km apart in 1986, but when you see Rafa Nadal hurting, fighting, recovering lost causes, equalling title winners who, perhaps, were thought to be slightly more conventionally talented than him, try seeing Ramos instead. Two peas in a pod: Spanish, proud, aggressive, athletically brilliant, perpetually inspired, self-motivated, deaf to both critics and those who say, "Not this time, he won't be able to ..."

Two fabulous freaks: men who are easy to admire, impossible to ignore and who give meaning to the whole idea of sport as a means to test the boundaries of what human beings can reasonably achieve.

Many people take their health for granted, however, this crisis will surely encourage society to reassess its priorities and give importance to those things that are really essential.

Speaking at the Founders Forum Health Tech Summit at London Tech Week in September, The Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, announced a 140 million investment scheme to find and create new artificial intelligence (AI) programmes to improve patient health and care in the NHS. Mr Hancock spoke of three areas of focus for the NHS going forward: improving the environment of innovation, better use of data and changing the culture of the use of health technology. This scheme clearly underscores the fact that technology is at the centre of the Governments approach to health and life longevity.

Its not only the Government which is using technology to help us live longer, Silicon Valley tech giants are also utilising technology and AI in an attempt to extend the human lifespan. Notable technologies being developed include: implanting robotic muscles inside human bodies to help increase lifespan, the production of AI-powered drug discovery and the use of nanotechnology to place tiny machines into human blood streams and brains in the hope that they can free us of diseases.

I was a very early investor in both healthcare and biotech, particularly focusing on early-stage companies looking to utilise the latest advancements in technology to make much-needed breakthroughs in their fields. My focus when I first invested in this area was to support the companies on a mission to help people live both longer and healthier lives; and this remains my focus today.

Colo. Paramedic’s IV Therapy Business Booming – EMSWorld

Mobile IV therapy is commonly associated with relieving hangovers after a long night of raucous libation-focused partying.

However, Rocky Mountain IV Medics is using the procedure to help people with a variety of ailments including fatigue, anxiety, altitude sickness and much more.

Opening in the Denver area in October 2019, the company has quickly grown to offering services in Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, Greeley and Loveland areas.

Cofounder and CEO Ryan Richardson first learned about the benefits of IV therapy after becoming a client of partner Jonny Weber's Mobile IV Nurses business, which operates in Arizona.

"My wife and I were just deathly ill and said we finally had an excuse to call Jonny and his new IV therapy company," Richardson explained. "So he comes out and literally by the end of the IV we were perfect. It was like, 'Oh, my God, this is the future.'"

Richardson was so impressed with the results from his treatment that he and Weber discussed expanding the business concept into Colorado.

With a background as a paramedic/firefighter, Weber heads the medical portion of the business while Richardson is in charge of marketing and business development.

Each IV tech on the team is either a nurse or paramedic, with years of experience under their belts, Richardson explained. The staffs' extensive experience also allows them to recognize more serious situations where clients may need to go to the hospital.

"It's super safe. It is an invasive procedure, so some people still get worried about that, but everything is sterile and safe," Weber said. "As a paramedic/firefighter, I have done IVs on the side of the road, upside down in a car, in the back of a helicopter, in the back of an ambulance, things like that where it's super crazy. When I go to a client's house, this is fun. I can take my time and it's controlled and clean."

And while 10% of the company's calls are for hangover relief, the therapy can help with a variety of issues such as dehydration, constipation, pain management and migraines.

"The majority of our calls are from people that really need the IVs, like people going through chemo and cancer or going through migraines. You don't have to go to the ER for migraines anymore, we come to you," Weber said. "We can take care of that migraine without any narcotics."

With the COVID-19 pandemic spreading across the U.S., the company has seen an increase in calls from clients needing therapy to help overcome the virus or from clients, like pregnant women, needing a boost of hydration or relief from nausea, but not wanting to risk going to the hospital.

"We do this in a controlled environment, we are one-on-one and everything we use is single-use, single package directly from our pharmacy," Richardson said. "It just makes it so that it's another opportunity to be treated on a medical level without ever having to get out of bed."

Rocky Mountain IV Medics client Brenda Williams was looking for something to help her daughter who suffers from cyclical vomiting syndrome, a condition often seen in children and young adults where they have unknown causes of recurring bouts of vomiting.

"When an episode starts, there is no at-home relief," Williams said. " I figured that since it is 2020, there must be something out there. When your child is sick, you will do anything."

Interested in experiencing the benefits of IV therapy firsthand, I took Richardson up on an offer for a complimentary session.

Working full time, taking three classes at Aims and caring for my dog, Don Luigi,I tend to burn the candle at both ends and am often tired and sluggish. Add that to not exercising regularly, going through an early medically induce menopause and not having the healthiest diet, I was a good candidate to put the treatment to the test.

The first thing the IV tech Juan Salomon did was talk to me about my health history, any medications I take and if I have any allergies. He then took my vitals, listened to my heart and lungs, and prepped the solution.

After filling out some short paperwork, I was ready for my stick.

This is where most people get nervous, especially if they've had a bad experience with blood draws and needle sticks before. But being a paramedic, Salomon is used to having to set IV's in all kinds of veins -- including the forehead-- and in all kinds of situations and assured me that my veins weren't a challenge.

A small poke and short sting later my IV was set and the bright green solution began dripping into the tube that flowed down to my arm.

The entire process from start to finish took around 45 minutes.

While I didn't feel anything right off the bat, I did sleep much better that night and the next day I did feel more energized, alert and peppy. My energy levels have continued to stay up and my body just feels better.

So do I think that IV therapy is beneficial?

For me, I do think that the burst of vitamins and minerals has helped me for sure. While the cost can be a little high, I feel that the benefits are worth the cost. IV therapy is something I would seriously consider doing once a quarter.
