US Pacific Presence: The Dark Side of the Compacts of Free Association – The Diplomat

In a recent International Center for Advocates Against Discrimination (ICAAD) report, a team of over 31 collaborating organizations worked to illuminate the inequalities resulting from the Compacts of Free Association (COFA). Drawing on history, policy, and legal analysis, they make the case that U.S. relations with the freely associated states are not benevolent partnerships, but one-sided agreements that are heavily influenced by the unequal power dynamics.

As the renewal negotiations commence, the international community must examine what economic assistance means in light of the decades of colonial destruction that has yet to be remedied. If the goal is to foster benevolent partnerships and to deserve a presence in the region, the United States must acknowledge and remedy this legacy of harm.

The COFAs are between the U.S. and three countries in the North Pacific: Micronesia (FSM), the Marshall Islands (RMI), and Palau. The key provisions of the agreements include U.S. military access and strategic denial; independent, self-governing status for the freely associated states; and economic assistance from the U.S.

The economic assistance for the FSM-RMI COFA is set to expire in 2023 which is why discussions about the negotiations have begun this year. Although there are many areas to explore in the negotiations, including compensation for the U.S. nuclear weapons testing program and health care access for COFA migrants in the U.S., Washington has set the terms narrowing the scope of the discussions to just the expiring economic provisions.

Get briefed on the story of the week, and developing stories to watch across the Asia-Pacific.

The issues related to the COFAs are complex and vary across the three states. Yet, the common COFA narrative describes the agreement in terms of U.S. military access in exchange for economic assistance and migration provisions. While we often hear about COFA politics through the lens of great power competition, ICAADs report unpacks issues related to human rights, migration, and environmental protection with a focus on the COFA provisions and policies that perpetuate inequities.

The historical context of the COFAs is integral to understanding the current status quo. Across the region, military and strategic interests have always driven U.S. involvement even to the point of political meddling and regime change in Palau and empty and exploitative promises of self-sufficiency have resulted in dependency and neglect.

During the U.S. colonial administration over Micronesia, American leaders reported on the strategy to maximize U.S. interests in the region. They argued that increased economic assistance would guarantee the loyalty of the islands as a result of economic dependency.

While economic dependency on the United States was the central strategy to ensure the longevity of U.S. military access to the region, the U.S. position continues to tout self-sufficiency. However, for 40 years prior to independence, the policies of economic dependency undermined the freely associated states positions to become self-sufficient states.

The reality is that economic assistance never shifted to promote the political autonomy of the freely associated states in any meaningful way. While some have argued that the United States contributions to the freely associated states have been understated, others describe these contributions as mere payments in reciprocity for U.S. military benefits.

Economic anthropologist Jason Hickel makes the argument for changing the conversation in international development from aid offered to countries who have caused their own problems to reparations paid for the harm, extraction, and underdevelopment caused by colonization. This case is particularly strong in the North Pacific where colonization is underpinned by racism and American empire-building at the cost of lives, communities, culture, livelihoods, and the health of the environment.

The harm and destruction are clear in the Marshall Islands, where the United States tested nuclear weapons and land-grabbed atolls for strategic purposes. But it extends across the three freely associated states with climate inaction, the U.S., failure to protect COFA migrants from human trafficking, and the explicit exclusion of COFA migrants from federal benefits, including Medicaid, among other challenges explored in the report.

Not only is there ongoing harm perpetrated by the United States, but Washington has also been unwilling to acknowledge the damage. For example, if you look at the U.S. Embassy website, there is no acceptance of the full scope of responsibility for the nuclear devastation caused by the nuclear tests, which vaporized islands and uprooted entire communities from their homes.

Where the U.S. government has acknowledged responsibility, they have significantly narrowed the scope. For example, following the nuclear weapons testing program, compensation for land use and medical care was provided to only four atolls when the radioactive fallout impacted the entire country.

The United States is fond of describing its relations with the freely associated states as equal partnerships. However, a look at history and legal analysis of the COFAs and their related provisions tells a different story, one in which a conversation about reparations would be more appropriate.

Erin Thomas is the Policy and Research Coordinator at the International Center for Advocates Against Discrimination (ICAAD). Based in Auckland, New Zealand, she focuses on human rights in the Pacific Islands looking at gender-based violence, climate and nuclear justice, and international human rights law.

"The first stage was be a functional human again, and open the door with the keys" – SportsJOE.ie

The word went around about Cian Healy, back in 2007, that there was a young lad in the Leinster set-up that had pretty much lifted ALL the weights. He was bulling about his peers, in training, and his coaches felt he would get more out of sessions with the senior squad.

Healy was 19 when he made his senior Leinster debut and he added 13 more appearances the following season, 2007/08, before nailing down the No.1 jersey in 2009 as he helped his province to their first ever European Cup. There was talk of him being a possible bolter for the Lions Tour to South Africa but he missed out on that fun and had to wait until Australia came to Croke Park, later that year, to make his Test debut.

"The whole occasion," recalls Healy of his debut, "just class to be playing in Croker. There were so many big names in our team which kind of shocked me a bit. I was young and cocky and confident in myself, and I got a bit of slagging for it. But some of that confidence goes a long way.

"I remember Paulie [O'Connell] tapped me down a ball from a kick-off and that was my one outstanding memory of that game, I got a bit of a run off it."

He got a bit of a run in the Test XV too as, over the next five years, he started 46 of his 48 Test appearances, excelled at the 2011 World Cup, made the 2013 Lions squad and won his first Six Nations title in 2014.

2015 was the year where that run was brought to a jarring halt. He had already dealt with bad hamstring and ankle injuries, in the previous years, but he went in for neck surgery not long after the 2015 Six Nations. The Clontarf prop was left without the use of his right arm due to nerve damage and, he once recalled, his retirement and insurance papers were all signed and ready to send off before that year's World Cup.

He began to get feeling and sensation back in his arm, though, and he held off on ending his career at the age of 27. Now, days away from what will be his 100th Test appearance for Ireland, Healy spoke about his journey back from the brink.

"Eventually, it was broken down into so many stages. The first stage of that was be a functional human again and open the door with the keys, and stuff like that.

"Each time I became capable of something Id work on another new standard that I could work on, something else more achievable. Id build through them and keep progressing though those goals to get into the international team again. And then get to the standard of the international team. Then it was a constant drive for fitness and getting my standards up because rugby keeps moving on."

Asked what was the secret to his longevity, Healy was quick to pay credit to the team of people around him at his province, and support from those close to him.

"I've relied on a lot and rehab coaches and physios to bring me back from the brink," Cian Healy says. "They do it day in and day out for other players, and everyone requires these people at some stage to drag them back from injuries or tough places. So a lot of it stems from that.

"And a bit of a drive, personally. Im not that type of person to settle down too easily and roll over, so a bit of that as well."

Morning Coffee: Lloyd Blankfein to become an EDM DJ? This is what a New York banker looks like – eFinancialCareers

Goldman Sachs is coming for the net worth of its current and its ex-CEOs. After agreeing to pay a total of $5bn in penalties relating to its role in the 1MDB Malaysian investment fund scandal, the firmhas decided to punish thepeople who were supposed to prevent this sort of thing happening.

The Wall Street Journal reports that 'executives' at Goldman are having $174m deducted from their pay. Bonuses are being cut for current CEODavid Solomon and three 'top lieutenants' (presumably including COO John Waldron and maybe chief risk officer, Brian Lee and another). Moneyis also being clawed back from Lloyd Blankfein and 'other departed' senior people.

Blankfein and the ex-Goldmanites would seem most culpable: the infractions took place on their watch. Goldman's own general counsel said yesterday that between2009 and 2014 the bank, "knowingly and willfully agreed to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act by corruptly promising, and paying bribes to foreign officials in order to obtain and retain business for Goldman Sachs. In 2012 and 2013 specifically, Goldman helped 1MDB raise $6.5bn by selling bonds to investors. That money was mostly stolen, apparentlywith the assistanceof two Goldman bankers -Timothy Leissner and Roger Ng (who still says he's innocent).

The UK's Financial Conduct Authority, which yesterday levied its own fine of97m ($126m), madethe affair sound like a failure of Goldman's much vaunted culture."When confronted with allegations of bribery and staff misconduct, the firms mishandling allowed severe misconduct to go unaddressed," saidMark Steward, FCA executive director of enforcement.

It's not clear how much of his~$1bn net worth is now at risk, but Lloyd Blankfein - who is currently on a 'gap year' wasn't saying anything about it onTwitter. The likelihood is that Goldman will now make deductions from Blankfein's 'at risk' stock, which was withheld for five years after he left at the end of 2018. Goldman's 2019 proxy statement suggests easily exceeds $50m.

Blankfein, whose life now includeshanging out with celebrities on yachts, might yetencouraged to take up a side-gig. We'd suggest he couldbecome an electronic dance music (EDM) DJ alongside David Solomon. The novelty value of two Goldman CEOswould surely be a draw. It would alsomake an alternative to leaving Goldman and going into government....

The real question, though, is what happens to Gary Cohn, Goldman's Blankfein-era COO. Cohn did go into government when he left in 2017 and all his stock therefore vested immediately. Can Goldman claw this back too? Cohn may have made the wisest move.

Separately, the Office of the New York State Comptroller yesterday issued a report on the State of the Securities Industry in New York for bankers/traders in the city to benchmark themselves against.

Two thirds of the people in New York's securities industry are men (a proportion that's remained surprisingly stable over time). 60% are white. 35% are immigrants from Asia and Europe. 9% are Hispanic. 7% are African American. 59% of people working in securities live in the city, 41% commute-in (mostly from New Jersey). 37% have a higher degree (a proportion that's rising). And a surprisingly small 12% work in technology functions in the securities sector....

Also interesting were the figures for pay. The average total compensation for securities employees in NYC is $406,700, comprised of a bonus of$164,100 and a salary of $242,600. In Manhattan, average securities compensation was even higher, at $411k. In Suffolk County, where hedge funds are based, it was higher still, at$621,368.

If these pay figuresare making you feel inadequate, it's worth considering that the median is likely to be far lower.- The comptroller's report also said that30% of people working in New York's securities industry earn less than $100k.

Meanwhile...

Hedge fund Elliott Investment Management is moving itsbase from midtown Manhattan to West Palm Beach, Florida andopening facilities in Greenwich, Connecticut, and Florida to help employees work from home. (Financial Times)

Hints from Heloise: Shelf life of cleaners | Human Interest – The Union Leader

Dear Readers: Because of the coronavirus, we have become more aware of the importance of disinfecting and sanitizing. This may prompt us to hoard cleaning supplies, soaps, detergents, hand sanitizers, wipes, bleach, etc.

But hold the phone! Cleaning products have a shelf life; they can lose their efficacy over time. Heres the scoop on longevity:

Disinfecting wipes, disinfecting spray and hand sanitizer are less effective after two years.

Liquid laundry detergent is good for six months to a year.

Chlorine bleach, discard after six months.

Of course, these dates assume the cleaning items are stored properly covered, in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.

Socks on the double

DEAR HELOISE: I always buy two or more pairs of the same color sock. This way, if one gets lost or gets a toe hole, I can rotate them and theyll still wear evenly.

Save that vinegar

Dear Readers: To avoid wasting vinegar that has been used to remove hard water buildup in the coffeemaker, save the filtered vinegar in an empty jar. The vinegar can be used again for cleaning the coffeemaker for a couple more times. Vinegar should be a staple in every home. Its safe, cheap and great for cleaning and freshening a ton of items around the house. Youll find a list of cleaning formulas in my six-page vinegar pamphlet that you can have by visiting http://www.Heloise.com or by sending $5 and a long, self-addressed, stamped (70 cents) envelope to: Heloise/Vinegar, P.O. Box 5001, San Antonio, TX 78279-5001. You can also use the filtered vinegar to freshen the kitchen sink drain.

Mirror repair

DEAR HELOISE: I found a beautiful mirror framed in a dark bronzed metal at a resale shop, but it had seen better days. It had several nicks and scrapes in the finish. To repair it, instead of buying a whole can of paint, I found small jars of enamel paint used for painting models at the local craft and hobby shop.

Theyre only $2 a jar, and come in a multitude of colors and finishes. It was a perfect match and easy to use with a small brush. The remainder can be used to repair other items the same color around the house handles, doorknobs, towel racks, light fixtures, lamps, patio furniture, etc.

Nana camp

DEAR HELOISE: Since we live far away from our grandchildren, I feel the need to bring nana camp to them when we visit. One whole suitcase is devoted to them. It is filled with crayons, paper, scissors, tape, watercolors, puzzles, dress-up, fabric, felt, glue, you name it! We have fun! The suitcase provides hours of fun and creativity. I hope someone will try this, too.

Corrinne, what a fun Nana you are!

How will the future of work evolve? – Fortune India

Social and emotional skills like leadership, service orientation, social influence, managing others, kindness, compassion, empathy, and emotional intelligence will also rise to the top. A recent The Wall Street Journal article, "Wanted: Employees Who Can Shake Hands, Make Small Talk," captures the nuanced importance of social and emotional skills beautifully in the title itself. With technology leading to a gradual reduction of repetitive tasks, rule-based operations and processes, and administrative reportage, humans will perhaps have more time for innovation, collaboration, and productivity. For once, John Maynard Keynes' argument in Essays in Persuasion about mankind ending up with 15-hour work-week owing to people getting more productive, thanks to machines, technology and new ideas, may come true.

Technology as hardware has historically assisted humans by being outside of us. Technology getting embedded into a man may give rise to a new workforce of cyborgs and newer work standards. Threats and challenges to the established concepts of capitalism, globalisation, and the rise of sharing economy and platform businesses will be some of the other factors affecting and determining the future of work. Even as one could interpret in all this as Schumpeters 'creative destruction' working in disguise, especially with regard to the future of work, it is far more complex than meets the eye. As an example, will the emerging future of work deliver on its promise of diversity and inclusion?

The future of work will be determined by the changing nature of workthe processes, environments, contexts, and relationships for work. Add to this a few developmentscloud collaborative tech, IoT and big data; social media-influenced new behaviors; mobility defined by anytime, anywhere working; and globalisation as defined by no boundaries. And top it with pandemic-attack driven compulsions! If the future of work is wide and epoch-making, so are the attributes of tech-driven labour marketsindefinite, erratic, and extreme.

Moreover, if work becomes different, so will the act of learning. Technological angst is integral to the evolution of human civilisation. The success of Learning how to learn as one of the top 20 most sought-out courses out of 3900+ courses on Coursera perhaps drives home the point.

Individuals, companies, institutions, and governments will all have to play their part as the existing models will not be tenable. Exercising the power of options will help make longevity a gift which will require concerted action by all.

More twists and turns. More fluid than fixed. More sprints than a marathon. That will be the future of work.

Measuring development progress beyond income – UNDP

This years World Statistics Day celebration has an added significance for UNDP: 2020 also marks the 30th Anniversary of the first Human Development Report (HDR) and its key measure of well-being, the Human Development Index (HDI).

The HDI was developed to challenge the idea that a nations progress could be assessed by its economic growth (usually measure by Gross Domestic Product). Now is not the place to highlight the shortcomings of GDP as a measure of human wellbeing, suffice it to say that Simon Kuznets, the Nobel Prize winning economist who helped develop the concept in the 1930s, explicitly warned the government not to use it as a measure of wellbeing. Yet that is precisely what started to happen around the world.

As was famously observed Not everything we count counts, and not everything that counts is counted, the HDI was published to steer discussions about development progress away from GPD towards a measure that genuinely counts for peoples lives.

Introduced by the Human Development Report Office (HDRO) thirty years ago to provide a simple measure of human progress built around peoples freedoms to live the lives they want to the HDI has gained popularity with its simple yet comprehensive formula that assesses a populations average longevity, education, and income.

This office has always recognized the limitations of the HDI a measure as crude as GDP but not as blind to human lives. Over the years, however, there has been a growing interest in providing a more comprehensive set of measurements that capture other critical dimensions of human development.

To respond to this call, new measures of aspects of human development were introduced to complement the HDI and capture some of the missing dimensions of development such as poverty & inequality and gender gaps. Since 2010, HDRO has published an Inequality-adjusted HDI, which adjusts a nations HDI value for inequality within each of its components (longevity, education, and income) and, jointly with OPHI, a Multidimensional Poverty Index that measures deprivations directly.

Similarly, the Offices efforts to measure gender inequalities began in the 1995 HDR on gender, and recent reports have included two indices on gender, one accounting for differences between men and women in the HDI dimensions, the other a composite of inequalities in empowerment and well-being. Currently we are joining forces with UN Women to develop new gender-related human development composite indices by making a distinction between well-being and empowerment.

Other indices, statistical tables, and statistical dashboards have also been added to provide a more comprehensive perspective of the relevant data to assess countries human development.

Yet there is still much to be done. And HDRO is setting out on an ambitious agenda to rethink human development metrics.

First, we would like to introduce human development metrics to account for what the 2019 HDR referred to as enhanced capabilities aspects of life, such as access to the internet, that are becoming more and more essential to life in the 21st century.

Second, agency peoples ability to have control over their own lives is a crucial part of human development that needs to be measured. The current HDI speaks to a set of capabilities essential for basic well-being, but it does not encompass many of the things that enhance agency.

Third, many people expect the HDI to tell us more about the sustainability of human development in an era when human activity is pushing the planets systems to the breaking point. Very few people had even heard of climate change in 1990, nor predicted the collapse of global biodiversity that we are now witnessing. These areas while very difficult to measure are vital to humanitys future.

We are working alongside experts from different disciplines including sustainability science and earth system science to better capture environmental and sustainability factors in our human development metrics.

Yet we must not let the perfect be the enemy of the good. The HDI, and metrics of human development more broadly, are meant as signalling devices that provide policymakers and citizens with information to evaluate choices and discuss development performance. Therefore, the expansion of human development metrics should be built on a foundation of reaffirming the original intent of the human development approach - as rough and ready measures of how countries fare on indicators that relate to human development and sustainable development goals.

In the end, the world still needs an index that can embrace the complexities of development but is also simple to understand and straightforward to interpret.

Sigourney Weaver Goes Her Own Way – The New York Times

THE PERFORMANCE THAT best summarizes Sigourney Weaver isnt one of the many in which she hurtled through the cosmos in androgynous outfits and questionable haircuts with an ill-tempered brood of extraterrestrial lizards in pursuit. It isnt the time she pretended to be an ape so that gorillas would trust her or to be human so that Melanie Griffith would. It isnt when she was thrown in the slammer or possessed by a ghost or nearly garroted by Harry Connick Jr., of all people, in a public restroom, of all places.

THE T LIST: A weekly roundup of what the editors of T Magazine are noticing and coveting right now.

Its when Stephen Colbert came for her. In a skit on The Late Show in April 2017, he sat imperiously at a reception desk in a doctors office on some far-flung space station, and Weaver, dressed as that lizard-evading star-trekker in the Alien movies, rushed in.

The xenomorphs! she yelled. Theyve breached their containment facility! One of the creatures, she added, was stuck inside her.

That really sounds like a conversation for your ob-gyn, Colbert replied.

Frustrated, she explained that she was Ellen Ripley, the woman who single-handedly saved humanity every five to eight years for the last three decades. And, she warned: I can feel this thing about to burst out of my chest!

Maam, Colbert deadpanned, I had a burrito for lunch, and I dont want to tell you where thats about to burst out.

With what must have been a herculean effort, Weaver kept a straight face. Instead of following Colberts lead and winking at the audience, she treated them to a complete reanimation of her celluloid alter ego from a series of sci-fi classics that introduced a whole new archetype: the female action hero. Here was Ripley in all her customary urgency, all her apocalyptic dread, as if Weavers involvement in the Alien franchise hadnt ended with its fourth chapter in 1997 and these breezy minutes on a cheesy set with goofy props were its fifth.

The actress demonstrates her range as she shares a couple of wisecracks. By Flora Hanitijo

She wasnt on Colberts show to promote some new project. She had no larger agenda, no careerist scheme. She was just there for the weird adventure of it. Thats the essence the wonder of Weaver: Shes always there, with total commitment, for the weird adventure of it. She says yes to one oddball dare after another. Then she takes the plunge.

And, despite the clich, plunge is the right word. In Avatar 2, which is largely finished but not scheduled for release until December 2022 to be followed by several planned sequels she shot many of her scenes underwater. Never mind that she was closing in on 70. (Shes now 71.) Or that the preparation included dives in Key West, Fla., and in Hawaii, where she reclined on the ocean floor while manta rays glided over her. Or that she needed to train with an expert who had coached elite military divers so that she could hold her breath, after a big gulp of supplemental oxygen, for more than six minutes. That made the part more attractive to her. My hope is that what I receive from the universe is even more outrageous than anything I can think of, she told me. I dont really say to myself, Well, you cant do this. Or, You cant do that. Let me at it! And well see.

There are female screen actors of her generation who are better at melancholy (Sissy Spacek), madness (Sally Field) or malice (Glenn Close). There are a few, including Jessica Lange and Meryl Streep, with a larger gallery of legendary roles. But are there any more exuberantly and eccentrically game than Weaver, who took her mix of regal beauty and formal training she studied at Yales graduate drama school in the mid-1970s alongside Streep in such wildly surprising directions?

THERES AN UNDERAPPRECIATED current of mischief in Weaver thats manifest in an eye-catching detail in her midtown Manhattan apartment, where we met for a long, socially distanced conversation this past summer. In a grand multipurpose room that provides excellent views of the East River, between a proper dining-room table and an elegant arrangement of couches, dangles a swing: a thick wood bench attached by ropes to the high ceiling. Its a declaration that she doesnt take herself too seriously, and to review her filmography more than 50 movies over nearly 45 years, beginning with a fleeting, mute appearance on Woody Allens arm in Annie Hall in 1977 is to realize that it says the exact same thing.

Between Alien in 1979 and Aliens in 1986, she did a French-language comedy, One Woman or Two, which co-starred Dr. Ruth Westheimer, the famous sex therapist. She did a poltergeist comedy, Ghostbusters, which co-starred Bill Murray and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. (Thats when she was possessed.)

Serious roles, silly roles, roles steeped in romance, roles drenched in sweat: She set no trajectory. Established no pattern. Even at her commercial peak, she took minor roles, as in Working Girl, in 1988, which gave her a fraction of the screen time of Griffith and Harrison Ford. That performance led to an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress in the same year that she was nominated for best actress for her portrayal of the doomed primatologist Dian Fossey in Gorillas in the Mist. Her co-stars in Gorillas were the silverback mountain gorillas of Rwanda, where much of the movie was shot. She just plopped herself down in the jungle among them. Of course, I had to pay attention, she said, as the babies were climbing all over me and urinating on me and pulling my hair. I was very careful never to touch them with my human hands, because the mothers, although they looked like they were eating and not paying attention, would have been right over there. The experience made her a passionate conservationist and environmentalist, and she beams at the memory. It was the closest thing to absolute joy that Ive ever felt on the planet just to be with them. Theyre so grounded, compared to us. They have such smart priorities: eating, sleeping, copulating.

Her other best actress nomination came two years earlier, for the sequel Aliens, which also put her through paces well beyond the norm. It was a tough shoot, physically, said James Cameron, who wrote and directed it. She was running around this complicated set, and there were valves and handles sticking out, and shed crack into them with her arm or shoulder or hip. I remember her just being black-and-blue after a couple of weeks. Thats why Cameron, who later recruited her for 2009s Avatar, didnt have to worry that she would balk at the soggy challenges of Avatar 2. She balks at nothing.

The reason isnt some innate confidence. Its because she felt pulled actually, pushed is more like it along an unorthodox path. Its because she had something to prove. And its because shes tall.

I WAS THIS tall when I was 11, she told me, meaning about an inch shy of six feet. Like a giant spider. She was Susan Weaver then, and her parents actually sent her to a doctor for tests. I think they were afraid Id just keep growing, she said. She didnt, but her height defined her, then and forevermore, as someone who spilled over the edges, who was bold by dint of biology and had no choice but to chart an outsize course. Small wonder that she later ditched Susan in favor of Sigourney, after a character in The Great Gatsby. She needed a less diminutive name.

She grew up in Manhattan, where her father was a television executive, and went to boarding school in Connecticut before earning an English degree from Stanford and then attending Yale. Her acting teachers there told her that she was talentless, then amended that verdict slightly. They said, We take it back, but you can only do comedy dont ever try to do any drama, she recalled.

And so she did comedy and absurdist comedy at that, acting in the Off Broadway productions of the playwright Christopher Durang, a close friend from graduate school. She told me that to understand her loopy assignments later on, I just had to understand her loopy assignments then, such as Titanic, a Durang one-act where she says she got her confidence back through playing a multiple schizophrenic who keeps a hedgehog in her vagina. After that, she said, anything else seemed pretty tame.

Movie agents would come to check her out onstage and deem her too statuesque to be easily cast. But eventually, she got auditions, including for Alien, which she didnt recognize as a future blockbuster. Her attitude when she met its director, Ridley Scott, then a novice with only one prior movie under his belt, was skeptical. I was wearing trousers with hooker boots that went over my knees, and I think they were at least three inches high, she said. Why I was doing that, I dont know. Maybe I thought it was science fiction-y. Scott asked her for her opinion about the script. Very bleak, she answered, adding that a sex scene (later cut) was utterly implausible.

But Scott was intrigued. And he pulled out these extraordinary black-and-white renderings of the alien in all of his erotic elegance, she said. I realized that Id never seen anything like this on the screen. It was so beautiful and so menacing. From that moment, I was hooked.

Alien made her a star, and she soon found herself opposite Mel Gibson in 1982s The Year of Living Dangerously. Although hes shorter than she is, when we went to the opening in Los Angeles, he encouraged me to wear the highest heels I could, she recalled, sharing the story because it was so exceptional. Many male actors, producers and directors conspicuously sat down the second she entered a room, lest they find themselves standing beside her and failing to measure up.

She wavered on doing a sequel to Alien. Then she read Camerons Aliens script. Hed constructed the entire story around Ripley and taken the character to a new level. In Alien, shes merely the lone survivor of the crew thats picked off, one by one, by a monster that she finally dispenses with at the end, as she heads home to Earth. But in the sequel, she leads a platoon of warriors back into space to check on colonists who may have met the same fate as her former crew. Its as much a war movie as anything else, with a woman as the general, and her gender isnt the chink in her armor. Its the very metal, giving her a humility and humanity missing in some of the men around her. That idea, coupled with Weavers ardent and un-self-conscious performance, made Aliens a feminist milestone. Weaver has served as a sort of cinematic godmother to Angelina Jolie in the Tomb Raider series, Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games movies and many others.

And she conveyed motherhood so well that Cameron was able to take it out of the movie. When he wrote and shot Aliens, there were scenes that establish that Ripley had a daughter who died while the character was off floating in space in a state of age-arresting stasis. That heartbreak is supposed to explain her fierce protectiveness of a little girl that the platoon later discovers on the decimated colony. But while editing the movie, Cameron realized that Weaver had utterly sold that bond independent of any back story, so he cut those early scenes.

It was while making Aliens that she began to think a lot more about becoming a mother herself, and a few years later, she and her husband, the theater director Jim Simpson, had their daughter, Charlotte, whos now 30. Weaver slowed down a bit, putting her career in a family-centered gear not uncommon among actresses of her generation, some of whom, like Spacek and Debra Winger, never really revved all the way up to full speed again, while others, like Streep and Weaver, with their formal training in theater, snapped back into trouper mode. For Weaver, the break wasnt hard or unusual: From the start, she had come and gone as she pleased, never settling on a fixed image, never lingering for long in Hollywood. She spent extensive time with her family in a remote residence on more than 400 acres deep in upstate New Yorks Adirondack Mountains that she bought in 1986.

She goes on long hikes and is never happier than when shes swimming in the lake, in spite of the snapping turtles, said Selina Cadell, an English actress and director who has been a close friend of hers for more than 40 years. The image of Weaver imprinted in Cadells brain is from the day they met in London, where Weaver joined her and a mutual friend of theirs at an outdoor pub. I saw this very gazelle-like creature leaping through the traffic in a rather dangerous way, Cadell told me, and the next thing I know, shed leapt over the wall and was sitting beside us. And I was so impressed with her exuberance and her folly all at once. I thought, This is an interesting woman.

Determinedly so. Both her height and that criticism from Yale which clearly haunted her, because she circled back to it in our conversations left her feeling like an outsider unsuited to or unworthy of certain assignments, such as the romantic leads then typically reserved for shorter or blonder actresses. But she simultaneously longed to show, with an array of other assignments, how suited and worthy she could be, in her own way: to play all kinds of parts of women who were different, who didnt fit in, she said. And she wasnt about to pass on something because it was too commercial or too much of a genre piece, not if there was something reasonably intriguing there for her. She was never going to be pretentious.

THE ACTOR Kevin Kline, with whom she has made three movies, told me that their long friendship is fueled in part by the gratitude each of them feels for the others ego-lancing teasing. During their first screen collaboration, the 1993 White House comedy Dave, she furtively positioned various members of the crew behind him and had pictures taken of them reacting to him by yawning or dozing off. She put together this photo album the amount of work that went into it was extraordinary, Kline said. Ive never quite witnessed anything like it. It was an extravagant practical joke.

But that same unstuffy sensibility meant that she often didnt go after or get some of the flashy Oscar bait that peers did. When I first met and interviewed her in 1994, she confessed that she sometimes complained to her agent, who also represented Streep: I want an Out of Africa. I want a Sophies Choice. But I never did anything about it, she told me back then. I always felt a little bit illegitimate. Whenever they talked about serious actresses, I always felt that I had one foot in the land of Arnold Schwarzenegger, one foot in the land of Ivan Reitman and maybe a toe in the land of Meryl Streep and Glenn Close.

Funnily, she was then promoting the movie Death and the Maiden, in which she had the starring role a torture survivor who takes her alleged torturer captive that Close had played in the stage version on Broadway. Death belonged to a string of movies in the 1990s that suggested an uptick in Weavers confidence. If Streep and Close have allowed themselves to become more playful over time, Weaver allowed herself to become a little more serious. She was a mesmerizingly icy adulteress in 1997s The Ice Storm, in which she and Kline teamed again, and a woman wrongly imprisoned for child abuse in 1999s A Map of the World, the movie of hers that she most wishes more people had seen. These characters, like previous ones, were outsiders, but of a more somber, less flamboyant sort. She by no means jettisoned the old mischief, and mixed in with her smaller, quirkier movies in the 1990s and 2000s was crowd-pleasing fare (such as Copycat, the 1995 thriller that paired her with Connick Jr.) and comedies (the 1999 cult favorite Galaxy Quest, which parodied the sci-fi genre that made her a superstar).

If anything, the eclecticism that defined Weavers career from the start has grown more pronounced. Over the past decade, she has done Broadway (Durangs modern-day Chekhov spoof Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, which premiered in 2012) and cable television (Political Animals, that same year, in which she played a secretary of state with shades of Hillary Clinton). In film, she has straddled genres as diverse as horror and animation. She has toes everywhere, even the most unexpected crannies. Shes done cameos on the English television comedy Doc Martin and the French television comedy Call My Agent! She has played or poked fun at herself in SpongeBob SquarePants and on Full Frontal With Samantha Bee. The idiosyncratic nature of her career, she told me, has made aging easier, because her parts never depended on dewiness. And she never encountered the sexual harassment or humiliation that so many actresses have come forward to describe. She was Ripley, after all. Ive been very lucky, in a way, starting out in this business by playing a woman who runs around with a flamethrower, she said.

She was lucky, too, that she got into the business back then, because actors brands are now so much more narrowly defined and so much more painstakingly maintained, their presence on social media absorbing as much strategic thought as their actual professional development. Weaver and, as it happens, Kline represent an entirely different ethos, a compulsion to stretch in this direction because you last stretched in another one, an understanding that variety is the handmaiden to longevity or at least to longevity in a happy, mentally healthy state.

She has three movies tentatively scheduled for release later this year or early next. Theres Ghostbusters: Afterlife, about which shes permitted to say exactly nothing; My Salinger Year, in which her supporting turn as J.D. Salingers literary agent recalls Streeps Devil minus the Prada; and The Good House, in which she plays a successful small-town realtor who becomes involved with a local handyman (Kline, again) as her closet alcoholism finally catches up with her.

THE T LIST: A weekly roundup of what the editors of T Magazine are noticing and coveting right now.

She has to be almost as mum about Avatar 2 as about the next Ghostbusters, so she couldnt say why the action is so aqueous. But she volunteered that she and other members of the cast had to learn not to squint or clamp their mouths shut both natural reactions when youre submerged during take after take in a gigantic water tank. She had weights around her waist and professional divers who sped her back to the surface for air at brief, regular intervals.

I asked her: You never said, during filming, This is insane?

I had some concerns, she replied. But thats what the training was for. And I really wanted to do it. I didnt want anyone to think, Oh, shes old, she cant do this.

Is there anywhere left for any of Weavers toes to go? She excitedly mentioned a planned movie based on a 2014 play by Brian Watkins, My Daughter Keeps Our Hammer. I play a very obstreperous mother whose best friend is a sheep, she said. The two of them watch soap operas together.

Let other stars do starrier stuff. They miss out on the xenomorphs, the livestock and the laughs. And in the end, they dont walk any taller.

A gray divorce may improve your health, but there are many factors to consider – PhillyVoice.com

Relationships. They are the fuel that powers a mans health and happiness. Studies have documented their benefits. Purpose, drive and positive behaviors all flow from their psychosocial dimensions.

Consequently, relationships have been a recurring theme in my discussion of 50-plus mens health how to foster them, strategies to expand them and techniques to maximize their value. With such a central role in a mans pursuit of a healthy lifestyle, it is astonishing to see a trend among older adults moving in the opposite direction.

A phenomenon that runs counterintuitive to all the positivity I just recited, but examined more closely, may be a graphic example of the desire for happiness at any age. Either way, so-called gray divorce is very much a major factor in the contemporary culture of mature adults.

According to The Pew Foundation,at a time when divorce is becoming less common for younger adults, gray divorce,is on the rise. Among U.S. adults ages 50 and older, the divorce rate has roughly doubled since the 1990s. For those 65 and older, the divorce rate has tripled during the same period.

Pew attributes the climbing rates, in part, to the aging baby boomers who have become unsatisfied and seek to pursue their own interests and independence for the remaining years of their lives.

A big factor behind this trend is longevity, says sociologistPepper Schwartz. She notes that half a century ago, an unhappy couple in their mid-60s might have stayed together because they thought it wasn't worth divorcing if they had only a few years left to live.

Now, 65-year-olds can easily envision at least 20 more active years and they don't want them to be loveless, or full of frustration or disappointment. Schwartz says boomers gave up on the concept of the dutiful-but-unhappy spouse a long time ago.

Positive relationships have benefits, but it is important to recognize that poor or stressful relationships, carry a downside. The National Center for Biotechnologycites sociological research showing that marital strain erodes physical health, and that the negative effect of marital strain on health becomes greater with advancing age.

NCBI reports that stress contributes to psychological distress and physiological reactions such as increased heart rate and blood pressure that can damage health through cumulative wear and tear on physiological systems. This can lead to unhealthy coping behaviors such as food consumption, heavy drinking and smoking.

In another report that presents the outcomes of gray divorce and some interesting gender differences, theNCBIindicates that roughly one-third of baby boomers are currently unmarried. Among adults 65 and older, a majority is unmarried.

That said, NCBI reports that more than 25% of older single men were in a dating relationship, compared with less than 10% of single older women. They attribute this to older men enjoying a larger pool of potential dating partners than women, reflecting gender differences in life expectancy and norms prescribing that men should date younger women. The researchers found that men tend to be more interested than women in formalizing these relationships through marriage.

So, what does this all mean? Does the trend of gray divorce represent a stamp of approval for those over 50 who are contemplating a split from their partner? The numbers certainly offer a sense of comfort that others are acting on their feelings. Or, is this just the last hurrah of a bunch of self-centered boomers who cant commit to the sacrifice required in a relationship?

Clearly, each situation is different, but here are some tips for both those evaluating their relationship and men who have made the decision to move on.

Dr. Anthony Rostain, my colleague at Cooper University Health Care and the chairman of the department of psychiatry, offers the following thoughts for those assessing their relationships.

Investment: Marriage (think relationships of some duration) needs to change as people age. Successful relationships require an investment. Have you made an investment?

Discontent: Identifying the sources of discontent is critical in determining your ability to salvage the relationship. Have you pinpointed these factors and tried to address them with your partner?

New Experiences: Have you tried new experiences that have the potential to rekindle the flames that originally brought you together?

For those 50-plus men who have decided to move on, experts offer this advice on some of the most important factors men need to keep in mind.

Consider the kids: Just because your kids may be grown and living outside the house doesnt mean they are not affected. The Good Man Project says that it is often the older children who have a more difficult time compared to their younger siblings. In their eyes, it may all just be "too weird." Talk to your children and consider their feelings.

Finances: According to theAmerican Academy of Actuaries, a mid- to later-life split can shatter retirement plans. Theres less time to recoup losses, pay off debt, and weather stock market gyrations. Also, you may be approaching the end of your peak earning years, so theres less of a chance of making up financial shortfalls with a steady salary.

Dating: AARP cites a 2009 U.S. statistical reportthat shows when it comes to finding a new 50-plus relationship, women increasingly outnumber men. For every 1,000 births, by age 50, women outnumber men 954 to 920. At 65, it's 871 to 791. So, the odds are in men's favor and women know it.

Among individuals of all ages, legal experts indicatethat women initiate 70% of the divorces, so men are often on the receiving end of the divorce decision. Regardless, it is never an easy process and takes on particular significance as we mature. Still, the data show its a choice that adults are making in record numbers.

My journey to gray divorce began with an interest in health behaviors of men over 50. From that perspective, if a divorce frees a man from stress and unhappiness, then it is probably good for his health. If divorce creates a gap in the companionship that motivates positive behaviors or triggers unhealthy practices, then it could negatively impact a mans health.

All in, with such a strong link between health and happiness, the impact of a divorce on your ability to maintain a healthy lifestyle is certainly worth due consideration.

Len Romes Local Health: How are Americans dealing with the pandemic? – WYTV

Some people have made healthy lifestyle changes since the pandemic began, while others struggle with mental health

by: Len Rome

(WYTV) So how are we, as a nation, dealing with this COVID-19 pandemic?

A survey from Parade magazine and the Cleveland Clinic says Americans are getting through it in different ways.

Some people have made healthy lifestyle changes since the pandemic began, while others struggle with mental health.

The coronavirus has motivated some people to adopt a better lifestyle, such as eating healthier foods.

Whats striking is that COVID has brought to attention the underlying risks of being overweight or having a chronic disease and getting very sick, said Dr. Mark Hyman, with the Cleveland Clinic. People are paying more attention to their health and theyre spending more time outdoors, theyre sleeping better, theyre eating better, theyre exercising more.

Despite the stress of COVID-19, the survey also shows 72% of those responding have a positive outlook on the future.

COVID-19 survivors at risk of new health issues – Persons overmedicating to ward off disease – Jamaica Gleaner

COVID-19 has not only claimed more than a million lives around the world, but it is waging a mental and physical war on humanity, creating new and long-term, life-threatening health issues in previously healthy individuals who contract the dreaded virus.

Findings from several studies conducted around the world on the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on survivors range from temporary male infertility; the possibility that pregnant mothers may transmit it to the unborn child; new physical and mental health issues; and worsening of pre-existing medical conditions.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States, in an October 6 article, noted that individuals who were overweight or who had a history of smoking were at greater risk of severe illness from COVID-19.

Research is also now suggesting that respiratory distress requiring intubation and intensive care, and inflammation associated with the virus, may lead to diabetes, a non-communicable disease that afflicts a high percentage of Jamaicans.

According to the Jamaica Health and Lifestyle Survey 2016-2017, diabetes was most prevalent among Jamaicans 75 years and older (42 per cent); 12 per cent among persons 15 years or older; among women, there was a pre-diabetes prevalence (13 per cent); and men 11 per cent. Between ages 15 and 74 years, the prevalence of diabetes was 12-10 per cent, compared to 7.8 per cent in 2007-2008, according to the survey.

One in two Jamaicans is classified as overweight, pre-obese or obese, according to the study.

COVID-19 causes inflammation and this is associated with the development of type 1 and 2 diabetes. There can also be the development of lung disease, heart disease and thyroid conditions, Dr Michael Boyne, professor of endocrinology and metabolism, and head of the Department of Medicine at The University Hospital of the West Indies, told The Sunday Gleaner.

The CDC noted that individuals with cancer; chronic kidney disease; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; heart conditions such as heart failure and coronary heart disease; immunocompromised state (weakened immune system); obesity; severe obesity; sickle-cell disease; smoking and type two diabetes are at increased risk of severe health challenges if they contract COVID-19. Pneumonia, it stated, was the most common diagnosis for individuals with severe COVID-19 infection.

Israeli scientist Dr Dan Aderka, speaking to the Jerusalem Post on October 7, suggested that COVID-19 could temporarily affect male fertility.

Not only was the virus found within the sperm of 13 per cent of screened COVID-19 patients, but there was a 50 per cent decrease in the sperm volume, concentration and motility in patients with moderate disease 30 days post-diagnosis, Aderka, from the Sheba Medical Center, reported.

Aderkas study found that a small sample of 12 patients is shown to have demonstrated moderate to severe changes in the testicular cells supporting sperm development and those producing testosterone, the hormone that induces sperm division and multiplication.

In July, an Italian study raised the possibility that the virus could be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy.

Weeks after contracting COVID-19, one local politician is happy he has not had any adverse side effects, and he is hoping it remains that way.

In fact, Julian Robinson, member of parliament (MP) for St Andrew South East, considers himself lucky for his quick recovery.

I had a mild version of the virus and it did not require any doctor. I took a combination of home remedies that was given to me. I am not sure what it was, but I believe it included ginger, Robinson told The Sunday Gleaner.

He attributed his speedy recovery to a healthy lifestyle regime developed over the years.

Playing his part to help fight the global pandemic, Robinson donated plasma. Convalescent plasma from patients who have already recovered from COVID-19 may contain antibodies against the disease. In an experimental trial, it is given to hospitalised persons fighting the disease in the hope that it may help them to recover.

With now 186 deaths and 8,670 persons infected with the coronavirus across the country now in the community spread phase, fear of contracting the disease is leading some Jamaicans to overmedicate.

Former president of the Jamaica Association of Private Pharmacies Owners, Rohan McNellie, said persons were stocking up on several over-the-counter medication and supplements.

Vitamin C, black seed oil, cod liver oil, melatonin, zinc and medications that are known to improve the immune system have been moving very fast. But some persons make up their own prophylactic, McNellie, owner of Three Angels Pharmacy, told The Sunday Gleaner.

And one naturopathic vendor said his special brew to steady the nervous system was also selling fast.

Some persons like Ronald Alney, a 63-year-old furniture maker from Molynes Road, St Andrew, said he makes his own strengthening products.

I have aloe vera in my yard. Since this disease, I been doing more regular washout (cleaning out the system) because people my age a target. So I clean out myself, he shared.

His special blend, he said, includes soursop juice with a little rum and Supligen, Irish moss, dragon and milk with carrot.

I drink healthy. I eat fish and vegetables, but not as often as I would like because they expensive. I dont get to eat so healthy, but I drink healthy. Plus, rum good for everything, he disclosed.

Alney also recommended lots of sunshine. Older persons, he said, should be encouraged to go outside for even 10 minutes of sun daily.

Other COVID-19 fighting home remedies shared with The Sunday Gleaner include rum, lime, ginger, honey and garlic, blended together, refrigerated and three tablespoons taken daily as preventative care.

Jamaica will now be using Remdesivir a vaccine on trial for the treatment of COVID-19, the Ministry of Health and Wellness announced earlier this month. Through the National Health Fund, the ministry plans to purchase 800 vials of the drug.

Although the World Health Organization said there were no benefits to individuals given Remdesivir for COVID-19, Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton said Jamaica would still acquire the drug, and he was supported by several pharmacists who lobbied for it to be available locally.

On Friday, Tufton said a shipment of the drug had arrived in the island.

United States Food and Drug Administration said Remdesivir was approved for Americans 12 years and older suffering acutely from the virus.

Food for life: New program in Carbondale hopes to improve health with food – Valley Advantage

As they look for ways to transform health in their communities, Wayne Memorial leaders pegged wholesome food and access to it among the first obstacles to knock down.

The health system based in Honesdale is launching its new Food Prescription Program from the Carbondale Family Health Center. The program is geared toward patients who struggle to both manage specific chronic illnesses and regularly face food insecurity or not having the proper food to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The program provides kits of shelf-stable goods and regular vouchers for fresh food and meat from a supermarket in the city.

We picked Weis in the Carbondale area because we know many of our patients in Carbondale walk, said Carol Kneier, the program administrator and a community health manager with Wayne Memorial.

The program also includes coaching on menu planning, portion control and health-conscious cooking techniques.

The health system aims to recruit 100 patients in the first year.

The AllOne Foundation, an organization born out of Highmarks 2015 acquisition of Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania, awarded Wayne Memorial with a $300,000 grant to fund the first three years.

Eligible patients have Type 2 diabetes, congestive heart failure or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, often called COPD.

It is our hope that through outreaches such as the Food Prescription Program, complications associated with medical conditions prevalent within our community can be prevented and ultimately result in fewer lengthy hospital stays, David Hoff, Wayne Memorials chief executive officer, said in a statement.

The health system is part of the Pennsylvania Rural Health Model, a pilot project in which the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services pay health systems on a pre-established budget rather than for every patient and procedure as a way to stabilize revenue.

Part of the Rural Health Model includes exploring new ways to reduce hospitalizations and improve community health.

Wayne Memorial identified those three chronic conditions diabetes, congestive heart failure and COPD as troublesome and persistent illnesses in the community. Those diseases also happened to go hand-in-hand with food insecurity.

Diabetes, one disease thats closely associated with diet and lifestyle choices, seems like an obvious choice for a food-as-medicine program.

In fact, the Geisinger health system is already treating diabetes and food insecurity with its Fresh Food Farmacy program, including at one clinic in Scranton, with striking results.

Wayne Memorials program is different for two key reasons. It doesnt have its own little supermarkets like Geisinger has at its Farmacies. However, it treats patients with other chronic diseases beyond diabetes.

While COPD and heart failure might seem less obvious, Kneier said the foods we eat have broad-reaching effects on our health, especially for people managing chronic disease.

For example, congestive heart failure and high-sodium diets dont mix.

Many times, a high-sodium diet will exacerbate the disease, Kneier said, adding patients who load up on sodium, found in salty foods, can retain fluid.

When they get more fluid, they have difficulty breathing, and they end up in the hospital, she said.

Now a low-salt diet sounds like no fun at all.

Thats why the Food Prescription Program will include different seasonings, for example Mrs. Dash salt-free options and Italian seasoning, as well as tips on how to use them to add flavor without ratcheting up the sodium.

So who is eligible?

Wayne Memorial is contacting eligible patients from the Carbondale clinic.

Kneier said routine monthly check-ins will be a critical part of the program, so doctors can monitor results and change course if needed.

Even if a patient is not eligible, Kneier said that other area food pantries are able to help address food insecurity, and that with the right tools and information, anyone can create more wholesome menus at home and improve their health through food.

There are resources out there, she said.

Ketogenic Diet: Here's a lowdown on what the diet actually entails.

Highlights

Off lately, Keto diet has become a huge hit. The diet's success in managing weight - and thus, keeping blood sugar in control, as well as keeping cardiac risk factors at bay - has made it one of the most popular weight-loss diets. Our body gets its energy by burning sugar that is derived from carbohydrates, that is, glycogen. When the body runs low on sugar during a heavy workout it enters into starvation mode. When this happens, the body starts saving up its remaining reserves of sugar and starts burning fat for energy (fat reserve stored in adipose tissue). Then the body enters ketosis, a state in which your body burns fat rather than sugar for energy.

Ketogenic Diet involves a large portion of the energy in your body coming from fats.

60-75% Fat

15-30% Protein

5-10% Carbs

If you are planning to follow the Ketogenic diet, it is essential to understand a few facts about it:

You should eliminate the C. R. A. P. = Carbohydrates, Refined Sugars, Artificial Foods, Processed Foods. Start by eliminating refined sugars and processed carbohydrates (such as bread, pasta, sugary drinks, energy bars, cereals, alcohol, sweets etc.).

This doesn't mean you can never have your favourite food again in the future! Once the diet is past the adaptation phase and the body has started burning fats, you can start experimenting with Keto versions of the food that you like the most.

The adaptation phase can be difficult and indicates how the person was eating before which can also lead to headaches, fatigue, and withdrawal for some people. So, don't forget to take it easy.

(Also Read:Lazy Keto Diet For Weight Loss: What Is It And How Effective Is This Variant Of Ketogenic Diet?)

Ketogenic diet needs to be adapted to, slowly.

If you are following the Keto diet and are able to succeed without any hiccups, then you should continue with the diet. But if you feel unwell, then it might be time to re-evaluate.

1. Listen To Your Body Needs

Some people incorporate dairy into their Keto journey while others do not. Your body will eventually send you signals as to how it reacts to certain food items.

2. Upgrade The Quality Of Nutrients

Consume healthy anti-inflammatory fats and organic produce as a source of high-value protein.

3. Changing Lifestyle Habits

To reap maximum benefits, it is important to stick to your eating plan and follow a healthy lifestyle. This includes regular exercise, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep and eliminating stress.

4. The body doesn't ride only on ketones but also depends on electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium. As sodium is lost during ketosis, the kidneys respond by reabsorbing more sodium while excreting more potassium into the urine. Hence, it is essential to incorporate food rich in potassium like bananas.

Signs of not having enough potassium in the diet:

5. When glucose is converted to glycogen inside the liver, it bonds with water, resulting in a more 'hydrated' body. It is always important to note that fat does not bond with water. During the state of ketosis, the body will not absorb as much water so the body will be less hydrated. Hence, it is important to be hydrated while following aketo diet.

(Also Read:What Is Keto 2.0? How Is It Better Than Keto Diet For Weight Loss? Expert Reveals)

Hydration is key during keto diet.

6. Lastly, remember that the Keto diet plan limits your food options and is harder to sustain for the long-term. Once you have achieved your desired weight, you don't have to stick to Keto diet.

Robin Williamss Son Wants to Improve Your Mental Health With a Mood Chew – InsideHook

I experienced mental-health issues throughout most of my life, admits Zak Williams. So with this product were introducing, we wanted to provide a foundation for mental-health support.

Williams just launched PYM (Prepare Your Mind) Original Mood Chews, a gummy-like edible thats explicitly not CBD but is supposed to help combat stress and trauma with a natural formulation. The son of the late comedian/actor Robin Williams, Zak had experienced anxiety issues in his teens and twenties, which led to panic attacks and, as he notes, a lot of ineffectual self-medication.

When it came to my dad dying by suicide, those issues went into overdrive, he tells us. I was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and my levels of stress and anxiety went through the roof. I started using alcohol to manage my anxiety; that didnt work too well. And cannabis made the anxiety worse.

After a try with prescription pharmaceuticals (they made me numb and not like myself) Williams found two pathways to an improved state of mind. The first was a personal commitment to focus on mental health advocacy and work with nonprofit groups within that space. The second was testing out amino acid formulations and other natural compounds to try and help his anxiety, while taking alcohol and other substances out of the equation.

You can take PYM like a vitamin or a painkiller, as co-founder Olivia June told us.

PYM

Which is how PYM launched. The citrus-flavored chews contain the neurotransmitters, amino acids and adaptogens GABA, L-Theanine and Rhodiola together as kind of a quick, easily digestible remedy for anxiety and stress.

There is a role for pharmaceuticals and clinical treatment, explains Dr. Raghu Appasani, a research psychiatrist and mental-health advocate whos part of PYMs scientific advisory board. But I see PYM as something you could easily incorporate into a healthy lifestyle. Its like brushing your teeth or showering but its mental hygiene.

You can treat it like a vitamin and take at the beginning or end of your day, or use like a painkiller if youre anticipating anxiety or being overwhelmed, adds Olivia June, the products co-founder (and as of last week, Williamss spouse).

I was admittedly skeptical. I tried PYM a few times (directions: chew for 20 seconds, then swallow; the taste and texture is inoffensive and bland, like a mildly fruity gummy). I was supposed to feel results in 20 minutes, and I certainly cant say I felt worse after I took it. Things did feel a bit lighter and my focus was possibly stronger, but I also wasnt sure if I was just experiencing a placebo effect.

While theres plenty of of published science behind amino acids and adaptogens, even the founders of PYM are working off anecdotal evidence. When I asked how the efficacy of a chew could be specifically measured, Williams and his team were honest its a work in progress.

We worked with friends, family and a close network of about 30 people who took prototypes, he explains. We wanted to get some initial validation about it. It worked for almost everyone, but we went through three iterations in total to get something we felt confident about. Now were going to segue into a more formal clinical study over the next few months, using control groups and working with 400 trial participants.

So PYMs effectiveness might not be quantifiable to a degree wed all like. Still, mental health is a critical issue in this country (anxiety disorders affect 40 million adults, which is 18% of the U.S. population) and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has certainly increased levels of anxiety and stress. Finding a more natural way to combat this that doesnt involve the letters C, B or D is a noble endeavor.

As well, even the founders note that PYM is only part of a larger lifestyle change, one that might involve meditation, mindfulness activities, a healthy diet and fitness.

Were seeking to replace unhealthy habits and self-medicating, says Williams. Look, I have no issues with properly prescribed medication and I appreciate people who can drink wine and enjoy it, but if they were using alcohol like I was to manage my anxiety I was actually damaging my mental health. I wanted something safe and effective.

As for the product name you can thank Robin Williams, indirectly. Pym is actually my middle name, says Zak, who then chuckles. My dad gave me that name because it sounded vaguely Welsh.

Northeast Kidney Foundation hosting virtual ‘Catwalk for Kidneys’ – The Saratogian

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. The Northeast Kidney Foundation is celebrating the 10th anniversary of their "Catwalk for Kidneys" fundraiser this year.

They are hosting a virtual fashion show, which lets them hold their fundraiser while working around the pandemic. The event will be livestreamed over Facebook on Nov. 8.

"We're really excited about it, excited to be able to hold it in this new format," said Carol LaFleur, executive director of Northeast Kidney Foundation. "We're grateful to all of our sponsors, and to Macy's for styling all our models."

Major sponsors for the Catwalk this year include Keeler Mercedes-Benz, Martin Harding and Mazzotti LLP, Nysopba, Fresenius Kidney Care, and DCI.

Macy's, for the third year in a row, is also a supporting sponsor. They are providing all the fashions the models will be wearing on the virtual catwalk. Adding their own fashionable flair to the event is local retailer Haute Messes in Dresses, who have designed a unique t-shirt specifically for the Catwalk for Kidneys.

"It was so fun going shopping at Macy's and getting styled," said Carney McGuire, one of this year's models along with her husband Duane Beach. "We wound up buying everything we tried on! We're doing a couple's photoshoot. We wanted something fun and fall-themed, so we went for a casual couple's day out in the city."

McGuire first got involved with Northeast Kidney Foundation last year, when she was working at Rivers Casino. The Catwalk for Kidneys was hosted there, and she became heavily involved in the event. She got to know LaFleur well and the two became friends.

Then, Beach was diagnosed with kidney disease, and suddenly the organization took on a whole new level of meaning for the couple. The support that Beach received from the Foundation renewed McGuire's interest and made her want to get personally involved.

"I think that continuing to support local organizations through the struggles we're all dealing with is extra important," McGuire commented. "It's harder for them to raise money now, so we're all coming up with these workarounds."

The Northeast Kidney Foundation is a local nonprofit, headquartered in Albany with other offices in Rochester and Syracuse. They were founded in 1972 by the Sperber family, as a grassroots movement to provide support and outreach for patients of kidney disease after their daughter needed a transplant.

"I can't say how much the support they've offered to Duane and I has meant," McGuire added. "The landscape has changed, and they're so willing to open the doors and say 'we've got you'. That's huge."

Each model has a fundraising goal they are working towards, with an overall goal for the Foundation of $50-60,000 this year. McGuire hopes to at least meet her fundraising goal of $1,500.

"More is better," she said. "Having never done this before, I set a fairly low goal. I'd love to raise more than that, especially knowing that this is going to be a long-term, ongoing relationship that I'm going to have with the Foundation."

During the virtual fashion show, the pictures from each of the models' photoshoots will be combined with candid videos where they introduce themselves and tell their stories. Every model participating has a close connection to the Foundation and its causes, either through themselves, a family member, or someone they know who has been affected by kidney disease.

"Everyone who tunes in will hear some very inspiring stories," LaFleur said.

Kidney disease is more common that people may think. 1 in every 7 people is at risk for kidney disease. Of those 7, 1 in 3 will develop in in their lifetimes. Diabetes and hypertension are the two most common causes.

"Being aware of your risk factors and managing them is the best way to prevent it," said LaFleur. "Once you have kidney disease, you have it - there's no pill you can take to cure it, it doesn't go away. But, there are many treatment options available, and with healthy lifestyle choices and working with your healthcare team, you can live a long and healthy life with kidney disease."

LaFleur says that early diagnosis is important, and recommends that when people go in for their annual checkup, they request copies of their labwork results. "Knowing your numbers" is the key to early diagnosis.

"You're looking for a number called the GFR," LaFleur explained. "A score of 60 or higher is good - 90 and higher is perfect. If your GFR is below 60, that's a sign that your kidneys are compromised. At that point you want to ask for a referral to a nephrologist."

LaFleur is optimistic about this year's fundraiser, despite it having to be so different than normal.

"We're very hopeful," she said. "We're fortunate that we've got a lot of support. We're so appreciative and thankful to all our sponsors, and all our models who are working so hard to raise money. This is our first ever virtual event, and because it's our tenth anniversary, I think that makes it extra special."

The Catwalk for Kidneys will air at 6pm on Nov. 8. Audience members will be able to vote for their favorite model and preview the items that will be up for auction after the Catwalk. The event will be livestreamed on FaceBook at:https://www.facebook.com/events/2721378161522872.

Idea to replace Air Force fitness test with monthly standards popular on service website – Stars and Stripes

Idea to replace Air Force fitness test with monthly standards popular on service website

A recommendation to eliminate the Air Force physical fitness test has shot to the top of the rankings on the services main idea submission platform.

The fitness program proposal, submitted Oct. 16 to the Airmen Powered by Innovation website, has received almost 800 votes and is now the most popular suggestion for Air Force Spark Tank 2021, an annual campaign designed to spur creative solutions and improvements by airmen.

Senior Master Sgt. Leslie Finley uploaded the pitch, arguing that the Air Force should change to a monthly, endurance-based program instead of conducting tests once or twice a year.

The service suspended physical training testing May 22 due to coronavirus concerns. Testing is scheduled to resume in January.

Finley, who is with the 59th Medical Wing out of Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, argued that the testing program doesnt lead to a healthy lifestyle, and cites the services new top enlisted airmans vision in a proposal for a focus on sustained fitness.

We believe that the time for change is now, Finley wrote. Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force [JoAnne] Bass laid out her vision in 2020 with the following statement: As airmen I would like to see us in a place where were not so much focused on the PT test as we are more about fitness and readiness.

The switch to gender-neutral minimum monthly requirements for cardiovascular and strength training would eliminate test stress, increase year-round fitness activity, and decrease last-minute injuries that often occur ahead of tests, the proposal stated.

Instead of a test, units would implement new requirements, such as running 20 miles and spending four hours at the gym per month, which would be tracked using an application on a phone or smart watch that monitors physical activity.

However, a plan involving a fitness app could face security challenges. The Pentagon barred the use of fitness trackers and similar phone apps at sensitive locations in 2018 after the app Strava published a global heat map that revealed locations of U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria.

Funding may be required for the development of an application capable of tracking, collecting data and receiving information from other fitness apps, Finley wrote.

Finleys proposal also would have units monitor compliance with the requirements, and fitness programs could be tailored to the individual.

The Air Force already requires unit fitness program managers, and base testing offices could instead focus more on nutrition guidance and coaching, the proposal said.

The idea has received mixed reviews on social media, while garnering more than 1,100 comments on the unofficial Air Force amn/nco/snco Facebook page.

I love this idea, Thomas James commented on the web page. It helps people maintain fitness, and even works around injuries. It assures that people take care of themselves without giving them an anxiety ridden date to be fit by.

Others said they prefer the annual test.

Its easier and less taxing than having my hand held throughout the month and having the Air Force prying even deeper in my life, commenter Alexander Docter wrote on the Facebook page. I prep for my fitness test a month out, take the test, get a 90 and dont have to deal with it for 12 months.

The selection process for idea submissions like Finleys will look at the needs for specific capabilities, as well as concerns about safety, policy, Air Force-wide implementation, technical feasibility and scalability, the Spark Tank website stated.

Six finalists will be selected from the submissions to pitch their ideas on stage at the Air Force Association Air Warfare Symposium in 2021.

3 easy heart-healthy changes that just might make all the difference: You can start today – KPRC Click2Houston

What you eat, what you do or dont do on a daily basis -- all of it can have a profound impact on your heart.

The following information isnt here to scare you, but did you realize heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for BOTH men and women, and one person dies every 36 seconds at the hands of cardiovascular disease? Thats according to information provided by Modern Heart and Vascular Institute, which sources the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

There are many things we can do to prevent surgeries and reduce the use of medications and bags of pills, said Dr. Agarwal at the Modern Heart and Vascular. Our team wants people to know that our focus is on prevention.

By now, most people know it helps your heart and overall health to consume a healthier diet and exercise more. Modern Heart and Vascular Institute would like to provide some heart-healthy lifestyle tips you can implement to help you on your path to a healthier life.

While were not asking you to avoid processed foods altogether (yet), lets start with a few substitutions, the experts said.

Instead of picking up that bag of chips, you can opt for carrots, celery or snap peas. Each of these snacks makes for easy and convenient eating and provide that similar crunch you get with chips.

If you frequently indulge in cookies and cakes, try a fruit salad.

Choosing those no-sugar or low-calorie options arent doing you any favors, and its better to get some great nutrients and antioxidants into your system.

In making just a few of these substitutions, you can help ward off buildup in your blood vessels, which can lead to coronary artery disease, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Exercise is incredibly important when it comes to the health of your heart, but that doesnt mean you need to go to great extremes, especially if youre not very active at the current time.

Ease into it.

Modern Heart and Vascular Institute recommended the following:

These are some small steps that will add some much-needed exercise to your day.

Even if you werent stressed before 2020, you might be now.

But stress is hard on your heart, so any steps you can take to relax are well-worth the effort.

You can also try some deep-breathing exercises throughout the day. If you feel your stress levels rising, simply stop, breathe in for four seconds and out for four seconds. After just a few minutes, you should start to feel better.

If youre looking to tailor a lifestyle plan that will help improve your heart health, Modern Heart and Vascular Institute has a board-certified cardiologist and a board-certified dietitian and nine locations in the Houston area. Click or tap here to learn more.
