These entertainers in their 90s offer suggestions for good health and a long life – East Bay Times

I am in my early 80s and have lived long enough to experience a lot and always have been able to manage difficult times. As we continue through this current climate, I need a lift. What can you offer? C.N.

Dear C.N

Thank you for your question. Heres one possible antidote: humor.

In 2017, HBO presented a documentary entitled If Youre Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast that confronted stereotypes about life after age 90. In the film, Carl Reiner has a conversation with several of his friends from show business, challenging what it means to really live in your 90s.

Reiner, the legendary comedian, director and screenwriter, offers himself as Exhibit A at age 95. (Reiner passed away in June 2020 at age 98.) He spoke with other legendary comedians: Filmmaker and funnyman Mel Brooks, age 90; TV icon Norman Lear, age 95; and beloved performer Dick van Dyke age 91.

Comedy is part of these mens work. Humor can be used as a teaching tool, although it is unlikely that is the intention of these notables. Yet, here are some messages we can extract from these talented funny men. The quotes are from the HBO documentary.

Carl Reiner celebrates humor. Reiner had a running quip about being in his nineties. Every morning, I pick up my newspaper, get the obituary section and see if Im listed, he said. If Im not, I have my breakfast.

What we know: A sense of humor is related to longevity. Adults with an average sense of humor live longer than those who dont find humor in life, according to researchers. Benefits include decreased blood pressure while laughter boosts the immune system by decreasing the stress hormone cortisol and minimizing inflammation.

Norman Lear talks about culture and flexibility. I think the culture stereotypes everything, said Lear. Because Im 93, Im supposed to behave in a certain way. The fact I can touch my toes shouldnt be so amazing to people.

What we know: Society seems to have some unrealistic expectations about ones age and respective appearance, activities and capabilities. Not to be overlooked is Lears ability to touch his toes, demonstrating flexibility typically achieved with physical activity. Such activity improves our ability to perform daily physical activities, improves our range of motion and increases our sense of balance, helping us avoid falling and injuries.

Dick Van Dyke suggests dance and song. For a long and good life, Van Dyke suggests that you sing, dance and laugh everyday. Without knowing his daily routine, we do know in 2018 Van Dyke played the older cantankerous banker, Mr. Dawes in the movie Mary Poppins Returns. He not only danced and sang but jumped on a desk, did a tap dance number and jumped down with a spring and a bounce. Dancing has been found to have results comparable to formal exercise improving emotional, psychological and physical well-being. And its fun!

Mel Brooks promotes outrageous humor. During the HBO show, Brooks stood up and told the crowd, Ladies and gentlemen, the greatest cat sound in the world, as he broke out into the loudest yowl. As the audience howled, he said, What the hell do you want? Youre not paying a penny here.

Reiner refers to him as the funniest human being in the world. Age and outrageous are terms typically not paired together., but there is a book entitled, Be an Outrageous Older Woman by Ruth Harriet Jacobs. Sometimes outrage is needed to get attention.

At the time of this HBO program, all four men continued to work at a craft and art they loved. And herein lies a message. Having a sense of purpose is a lifesaver; humor is a healer helping us keep a perspective. And laughing is healthy. So, think about ways to do something you love to do, keep your sense of humor, have a good laugh and even do a little dance while taking a break from the news.

Thank you, C.N., for your good question. To watch the HBO documentary, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zv_aRiiBmA.

Next week, well identify four women in their 90s, doing what they love to do with a message to all of us. Be safe, well and kind to yourself and others.

Note: A week before Reiner died, he said the following in an interview, Ive always got something Im doing and improving.

The Best Champagne to Buy in 2020 – Eater

I love Champagne the way it smells, tastes, and bubbles up while Im enjoying a nice full glass. As we stride toward the time of year (and what a year) when Americans consume the most Champagne, there are decisions to be made, should we all be so lucky: namely, which bottle to pick?

Champagnes legacy of luxury and connection to upper-class marketing has created a worldwide industry distributing 300 million bottles in a typical year. Its also resulted in a good deal of confusion and opacity when it comes to choosing what to drink. The coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated this reality, doing away with public tastings, wine bar shindigs, and the dreaded (but occasionally fruitful) inter-office exchange. Now, choosing what to accompany a Christmas dinner at home or a 2020 New Years Eve sendoff (also at home) can feel like a shot in the dark. My suggestion for ease of enjoyment? Start with a smart bottle from one of the great Champagne houses.

For centuries, power and money in the Champagne region have flowed through the big Champagne houses (sometimes called Grande Marques), many of which are household names: Veuve, Dom, Roederers rap-famous Cristal bottling, and so on. French luxury multinational LVMH typifies a modern take on this, formed in the 80s upon the merger of iconic French fashion label Louis Vuitton with Champagne house Moet & Chandon, which in the 1970s acquired the cognac producer Hennessey.

But the wines produced by these houses have been snubbed over the last decade by a certain kind of drinker, typically younger, relatively new to wine, and predisposed to drinking natural wines first and foremost. Ive been guilty of this very thing, having gravitated far more toward so-called grower Champagnes, humbler bottlings (in production scale, not necessarily price) in which the wines are produced by the estate that grows the grapes. By contrast, the bigger Champagne houses might source the fruit for the wines from dozens, or even hundreds of individual growers across the Champagne region, blending them together under the careful guidance of a chef de cave, a term that denotes the head winemaker and cellarmaster in charge of the whole operation.

Indie and natty they arent, but for pure drinking pleasure Im convinced many house Champagnes are due for a reappraisal by anyone who likes a good glass of something nice after all, marketing isnt the only reason these wines are enjoyed by millions. For a drinker easing themselves into the decision-making process, its helpful to start by focusing on a handful of firms and their entry-level offerings, typically described as non-vintage (NV), meaning that theyre made from grapes across multiple years of harvest (sometimes also denoted as reserve, depending on the house). These house Champagnes represent a broad range of prices, each one readily available in the U.S. market.

Suffice it to say that Champagne is not for everyone this year; such is the weight of the world we inhabit. At the same time, I think there is an understandable and very human impulse behind the desire to find comfort and celebration in the relative safety of a sturdy bottle. If youve got the means and bandwidth to think about enjoying a bottle of Champagne this holiday season, theres ample cause to say cheers. Heres to a little light in the darkness.

Its not possible to really engage with the world of Champagne houses without confronting the phenomenon of Yellow Label Veuve. Thanks to its near-total market saturation, Veuve overtook Moet in 2013 as the most widely consumed Champagne in North America. LVMH sells 1.5 million cases of Veuve each year across the brands various bottlings, and a cool 400,000 of these are sold to the United States, a considerable majority of which is Yellow Label. It is a global product, like Coca-Cola or Guinness beer.

Theres a good reason for that. This wine is made to a precise formula, unvarying from year to year and bottled with the inclusion of Veuves vast collection of reserve wines, blended into Yellow Label to ensure consistency. Yellow Label gets 10 grams per liter of dosage (which refers to the sugar added into Champagne at bottling to balance acidity and promote longevity), and is composed of grapes from more than 60 parcels across Champagne.

For the price, there may be more interesting wines on the market, but if your heart is set on Veuve, or its one of the few Champagnes available where you live, I certainly understand (especially if youve been pulled in by one of Veuves flashy seasonal boxes). There is no other wine that tastes quite like it. And about that price: Yellow Label Veuve can run close to $60 or as low as $39, depending on where and when you make your purchase. I recommend checking different shops (including grocery and big-box retail) in your area for pricing. Its the same stuff in the bottle, no matter where you buy it.

Budget Champagnes are often kind of disappointing, but for the price (as low as $33 at some retailers), the entry-level wines of Andr Clouet punch above their bracket. Clouets Brut Grand Reserve is 100 percent pinot noir sourced from vineyards surrounding the famed Champagne villages of Bouzy and Ambonnay. It receives just six grams of dosage.

In the glass, youll taste a drying, green plum malic acidity and unmistakable Champagne crispness. Theres red fruit here, as well as strawberry and Anjou pear, which makes sense you are drinking Champagne made entirely from red grapes, after all. A portion of the wines in this blend spend time in Sauternes barrels, a style of sweet white wine from Bordeaux, which imparts pleasant thoughts of honey and pie crust. If Christmas gatherings were a thing this year, it would make a fine party favor.

Many Champagne houses have cred that goes back 100 or even 200 years, and then there is Gosset, in business since 1584. Gosset is located in the village of Ay, and was family owned for more than 400 years until being sold in the early 90s to Renaud-Cointreau, whose portfolio of French products includes cognacs, liqueurs, and ratafia.

This is a really fine Champagne for the price, offering an approachable, aperitif-style drinking experience think Campari and jasmine tea balanced with crisp freshness and a whiff of chimney smoke. Traditionally Gosset was known for not allowing any malolactic fermentation in the winemaking process, but this began to change around a decade ago, specifically for the Excellence bottling, the houses entry-level cuvee. This promotes a softer, rounder experience, and results in a more accessible and easy-drinking wine. Around 30,000 cases are made each year, typically consisting of three parts pinot noir to two parts chardonnay, with a dash of meunier thrown in for weight, although this ratio changes between releases.

There is not a tremendous amount of hype or buzz around Gosset. Though owned by a conglomerate, Gossets marketing footprint and bottle design are decidedly measured understated, even. Think of that no-nonsense approach as a virtue, especially when backed up by a product of such high quality. More than perhaps any other wine in Champagne, Gosset is highly versatile and cruises effortlessly across whatever activities you have planned for the holiday season, particularly if they include television, Thai food, and a second glass.

I adore the house Pol Roger, a wine long synonymous with England thanks to a history of exporting wines in a brut style, with minimum dosage, favored by U.K. drinkers. The house is still family owned, now in its fifth generation of production, and proudly sports its association with Sir Winston Churchill, who was an eager ambassador for the brand and even named one of his racehorses after it.

I think the entry level Pol Roger, known as Reserve, is one of the most elegant and refined NV Champagnes you can buy at any price. Pol Roger, like Roederer, straddles the line between grower and house, with more than half of the wines it makes coming from the firms own 93 hectares of vineyards. Every bottle is riddled by hand (riddling is the process of carefully turning a bottle of Champagne to collect sediment in the neck), and the wine is made of equal parts pinot noir, pinot meunier, and chardonnay, undergoing malocatic fermentation and fermented entirely in stainless steel there are no barrels at Pol Roger. A quarter of the bottling is made from reserve wines, held back from proceeding vintages, and each bottle ages a full four years on the lees before release.

Understatement and finesse are the watchwords here, owing to Pol Rogers unusually long respite in the house cellar before public release. Both ripe and fresh, this wine balances deep red fruits with ginger zip and buttered toast. If I could only drink one house Champagne for the rest of my life, this would be it. Pair with binge-watching the latest season of The Crown, or, if thats already exhausted, The Great British Baking Show.

You might almost forget this was coming from a Champagne house; Jacquesson gives off big grower Champagne vibes, and feels more like the work of focused individuals the Chiquet brothers, who have overseen the house since the 1980s than some vast megacorp. Among wine writers, somms, and bottle shop owners, Jacquesson has a certain kind of wine geek cachet, for both the annual numbered releases and the houses limited-edition single-vineyard bottlings (lieu-dit), which are far more expensive.

For the year 2000 vintage, Jacquesson retired its NV Perfection Brut bottling in favor of an ever-changing numbered cuvee based on individual vintage years. The first release was 728; we are now up to 742, a wine built from the 2014 vintage made up of roughly 60 percent pinot noir and 40 percent chardonnay, receiving a scant 1.5 grams per liter of dosage.

At $70, give or take, the wine had better be awesome, and Jacquesson 742 definitely is. Theres a ton of richness in this wine, a kind of marzipan praline thing that reminds me of a Manhattan candied-street-nut vendor, but offset by a big splash of herbal tea: chamomile, dried carrot, and especially mint tea, like how they serve it at cafes in Europe, full up to the brim of the mug with hot water.

If youre giving Champagne as a gift this year, 742 would make an especially fine one. This wine can happily be drunk immediately, but it can also hang out for the next special occasion, or be forgotten by the recipient over the next several years its built to age and will only grow more complex and complete with time.

There is an undeniable mystique around Krug, one of the best-known wine labels on the planet, Champagne or otherwise. Though the house does offer a range of single-vineyard and single-year vintage wines, it is the non-vintage Grande Cuvee for which it is rightly famous. Make no mistake: This is not an entry-level wine, with prices starting at around $160, or $78 for the half-bottle. Each modern Krug comes marked with a Krug ID on the back of the label, which allows you to quickly look up what youre drinking and learn more about its composition. I recently tried a bottle from the 168th edition of Krug Grand Reserve, a blend of over 120 individual wines from more than 10 different years, per Krug ID. This particular release is a blend of dominant pinot noir (53 percent), alongside chardonnay (35 percent) and pinot meunier (13 percent).

In the glass, this wine is deeply structured and muscular, like drinking really good white Burgundy or classy California chardonnay. Wine lovers will go on and on about Krugs finesse, balance, depth, piquant measured sweetness, and long finish. More casual drinkers might be just as happy with a bottle half the price. For what its worth, I think Krug is better than Dom, better than Cristal even (the top-shelf Roederer bottling), and second only to the unscalable heights of Salon for the finest house Champagne in the world. There is no other wine thats like it. Im a Krug truther, especially if youre buying.

Living Weil – The Boca Raton Observer

As a leader in the field of integrative medicine,Dr. Andrew Weil has mastered the secrets of living a good life.

By following his own five pillars of optimal health: eating right, exercising, neutralizing stress, maintaining social and intellectual connectivity and attending to spiritual well-being, at age 78 he is proof that healthy aging is possible.

To help others embrace healthier lives, Dr. Weil shares his philosophy on his website, drweil.com, which is the leading online resource for healthy living based on the principles of integrative medicine, and through his 15 bestselling health and wellness books.

On his website, Dr. Weil notes how he learned his family has some genetic factors that put him at an increased risk of heart disease. His father had a mild heart attack at the age of 49, and later two coronary bypass surgeries. He lived to the age of 81. Dr. Weils paternal grandfather died of a heart attack at 50, and his paternal grandmother also had coronary artery disease and angina.

Knowing he couldnt counteract his genetics, Dr. Weil chose to address the cardiac risk factors he could control, such as adopting a pesco-vegetarian diet (eating fish, along with a vegetarian diet), exercising daily, working to reduce stress, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. He says that implementing these changes have resulted in good heart health.

And while Dr. Weil, who has graced the cover of Time magazine twice, endorses making healthy resolutions, he also cautions against setting unrealistic goals.

One of the biggest mistakes people make with New Years resolutions is trying to do everything all at once, says Dr. Weil. Rather than setting too many expectations, I encourage pursuing smaller, realistic goals.

While conventional medicine treats chronic conditions with prescription medications, Dr. Weil, who trained at Harvard Medical School in Boston, explains that integrative medicine combines conventional medicine with natural and less invasive treatments, and looks at the whole person while emphasizing nutrition, lifestyle, naturopathic therapies (including herbs, massage and acupuncture), spirituality, and the mind-body connection.

According to Dr. Weil, good nutrition plays an important role in integrative medicine. Since processed and manufactured foods can lead to chronic inflammation, a contributor to heart disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer and other health conditions, Dr. Weil recommends following an anti-inflammatory diet consisting of lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, plant-based proteins, fatty fish and fresh herbs and spices.

An anti-inflammatory diet, basedon the Mediterranean diet, can help usall age gracefully and delay the onset of age-related disease and discomfort, Dr. Weil says.

For those who want to eat healthier in the new year, Dr. Weil recommends making one change at a time.

My top recommendation is to give up sweetened drinks of all kinds soda, sweetened teas and coffees, energy drinks and fruit juices, he advises. Consuming these sugary drinks can lead to weight gain, and an increased risk of diabetes and heart disease.

In place of sugary coffee or tea drinks Dr. Weil is a fan of traditional matcha, a powdered green tea known to have many health benefits that he discovered while on a trip to Japan. He went on to launch a company, MatchaKari with Andr Fasciola, selling high-quality matcha.

Matcha is a good anti-inflammatory coffee alternative and an important part of my morning ritual, Dr. Weil says, adding that it has been shown to help with anxiety, reduce cholesterol levels, and stabilize blood sugar.

In his book, 8 Weeks to Optimum Health: A Proven Program for Taking Full Advantage of Your Bodys Natural Healing Power, he offers specific and detailed information on other ways that diet, supplements, vitamins, herbs and other integrative medicine practices can lead to better overall health.

Small dietary changes can have a big impact and result in lasting change, Dr. Weil says. The basic principles of following an anti-inflammatory eating plan arent hard, but they do require shopping and preparing your own foods.

In his cookbook, Fast Food, Good Food: More Than 150 Quick and Easy Ways to Put Healthy, Delicious Food on the Table, he shares recipes that incorporate anti-inflammatory foodsand are also easy to prepare, healthy, and delicious.

Some of the unhealthiest foods are the cheapest and the most readily available, Dr. Weil says. I work to show peoplethat healthy meals can taste good and be easy to prepare.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in Weils True Food Kitchen restaurants, where the seasonal menus are guided by his anti-inflammatory food pyramid. True Food Kitchen currently has more than 30 restaurants nationwide, including their Town Center at Boca Raton location.

Eating healthy doesnt mean giving up the foods you like, Dr. Weil says, citing his restaurants healthy pizza entrees, family meals and decadent desserts as evidence. It means reducing the percentage of animal foods in your diet and incorporating more fresh produce and healthy dietary fats, such as olive oil, into your meals.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle canbe challenging even during the best of times, but with the COVID-19 pandemic,Dr. Weil says the uncertainty of the virus has added a layer of anxiety for many.

When people are feeling stressedor anxious, I recommend practicing the4-7-8 breath, he explains. Taking these five simple steps will put you in a more relaxed state.

Dr. Weil starts his own morning with meditation, followed by this 4-7-8 breathing exercise:

In addition, Dr. Weil says regular exercise is also an important part of emotional wellness and can help prevent and ease depression. One of his favorite integrative exercises is walking. He also enjoys swimming and working in the garden at his Tucson home.

I recommend 30 minutes of brisk walking five days a week, he noteson his website. In addition, I alsorecommend a strength or resistance training program using free weights or weight machines to strengthen and tone your muscles and increase the density of your bones.

He also offers additional free tools to help people maintain their health and wellness, boost immunity, and manage anxiety and stress during the pandemic on his website for the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

The center, which opened in 1994,trains healthcare professionals in evidence-based, integrative medicine practices. Dr. Weil says his goal is to one day see integrative medicine taught as part of the standard curriculum at medical schools across the country.

Weve instructed over 2,000 physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners in a wide variety of specialty areas and currently have a waiting list for our medical fellowship program, says Dr. Weil who serves as the centers director. Our website, awcim.arizona.edu, allows consumers to search our alumni directory to locate an integrative medicine practitioner in their area.

The center is currently in the process of constructing a new, 34,000-square-foot building that is expected to be completed by 2022.

Over the past 30 years, Dr. Weil has seen the practice of integrative medicine, which promotes prevention and the bodys natural ability to heal itself, evolve. Today, the practice has become more mainstream and continues to grow in popularity among both consumers and practitioners. He says he believes integrative medicine is the future of healthcare.

More people are taking prescription medications than ever before and this is cause for concern, Dr. Weil says. Americans now take 10 times as many prescription medications as they did in the 1950s and many are overused and misused.

All too often, Dr. Weil says, prescription medications simply reduce symptoms without addressing the root cause of disease.

Many other interventions exist that dont involve prescription drugs, but sadly, they arent taught in medical school, Dr. Weil notes on his website. When I write a treatment plan for a patient, my first recommendations always include food, what not to eat, what to eat more of, and what dietary changes to make to improve health.

According to Dr. Weil, an anti-inflammatory diet can improve health conditions such as allergies, asthma and other health conditions to the point where medication can often be reduced and in some cases, eliminated. In his book, Mind Over Meds: Know When Drugs Are Necessary, When Alternatives Are Better - and When to Let Your Body Heal on Its Own, he takes a deep dive into the problems of overmedication and integrative medicine approaches to treat health conditions such as high blood pressure, allergies, depression and more.

With integrative medicine, patients and practitioners are partners in their health and healing, Dr. Weil says. By working with a practitioner trained in integrated medicine, patients can develop a lifelong wellness practice.

On 2021: Resolutions for the community – The Gazette

2020 has brought into focus the beauty, resilience and strength of our community. As we look forward to 2021, I offer the following resolutions. I resolve:

to continue extending a helping hand to friends, family and neighbors. After the derecho, our community helped each other by providing food, clearing trees and getting each other back on our feet.

to help our schools get back to normal. Since last spring, teachers and parents have learned new technology, exchanged countless emails and phone calls and worked together under the most challenging of circumstances to do the very best for our kids. As kids go back into our school buildings, I hope the spirit of collaboration and common understanding persists.

to remember all workers are essential and deserve a living wage and safe working conditions. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we realized that workers in meat packing plants, grocery stores, schools, hospitals, nursing homes and public safety employees are all essential to our daily lives.

to acknowledge access to healthcare is a right, and when portions of our community cant access healthcare it is detrimental to all of us. Lets focus on keeping our entire community healthy.

Cheers to a happy and healthy 2021!

Eric Gjerde is state representative-elect for House District 67.

These Were the 15 Most-Read Singularity Hub Stories of 2020 – Singularity Hub

Most Saturdays we post a curated collection of our favorite articles from the week. But with the year nearing its end, this Saturday and next well curate 2020 as a whole. First up, well take a look at the years most-read articles from Singularity Hub, and then next week well post some of our favorite writing from around the web.

2020 was, of course, dominated by the pandemic, politics, and social change. No surprise, then, that Hub stories on those themes were some of our most-read. Still, despite it all, science and technology kept moving as a whole.

With concern about our planet growing every year, people were hungry for news on energy breakthroughs, including construction of a fusion power plant, new battery technologies, wireless electricity, and affordable electric cars. Meanwhile, the cold reaches of outer space remained hot as ever with a wild attempt to divert an asteroid and the latest estimate of how many Earth-like planets may lurk in our galaxy. We also wrote about a surprising test of the worlds biggest computer chip, AI that partly programs itself, and a bold prediction about Moores Law from the company that got it all started. Oh, and there was a guy in a jet suit gliding up a mountainside. Just for good measure.

The Trillion-Transistor Chip That Just Left a Supercomputer in the DustJason DorrierThe team said the CS-1 completed a simulation of combustion in a power plant roughly 200 times faster than it took the Joule 2.0 supercomputer to do a similar task. The CS-1 was actually faster-than-real-time. AsCerebrus wrote in a blog post, It can tell you what is going to happen in the future faster than the laws of physics produce the same result.i

The Worlds Space Agencies Are on a Quest to Deflect a (Harmless) AsteroidJason DorrierWhile the last killer space rock dropped out of the sky with no warning, we have a few tools the dinosaurs didnt. In addition to telescopes to chart potentially hazardous asteroids, we can visit and, theoretically, divert an asteroids course before it reaches us. Now, the worlds space agencies are teaming up to take planetary defense beyond theory.

QuantumScapes New Solid-State Battery Is Twice as Energy Dense as Lithium-IonEdd GentClaims of revolutionary new battery technologies are a dime a dozen these days, but none so far have come close to knocking lithium-ion off its perch. So when battery startup QuantumScape announced in September that it had cracked the Holy Grail of battery technologya solid-state lithium metal batteryit didnt generate much buzz. Now, though, the company has released performance resultsand people are starting to pay attention.

After Coronavirus the World Will Never Be the Same. But Maybe, It Can Be Better.Vanessa Bates RamirezWere making plans for what well do when things go back to normaland banking on that happening. But what if life never fully goes back to how it was pre-coronavirus? What if this epidemic is a turning point, and after it the world is never the same? More importantlyor, at least, more optimisticallywhat if the world could come out of this crisisbetter than it was before?

Watch a Jet Suit Pilot Glide Up a Mountain in a Test for Wilderness ParamedicsJason Dorrier[Richard] Browning [has since] dialed in his invention, and in addition to a barnstorming tour, his company, Gravity Industries, has begun exploring ways his jet suit could help people. Which explains why, not too long ago, youd have found Browning gliding up a mountainside to the aid of an injured hiker in Englands Lake District. It was a trial, in partnership with the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS), to see if a personal jet suit might be a new tool for emergency responders in wilderness areas.

You Can Buy This Electric Car for $7,999 in CaliforniaVanessa Bates RamirezA tiny electric car that costs just $4,200 has been all the rage in China this year. The Wuling Hong Guang Mini EV generated over 15,000 orders within 20 days of its release in July, and added another 35,000 to that in August, beating out Chinese orders for Tesla Model 3s in the same period. Now another small, affordable Chinese electric car is set to make its debut on American roadsCalifornian roads, to be exact.

There Could Be 300 Million (or More) Earth-Like Planets in Our GalaxyJason DorrierThe first planets discovered outside our solar system were strange, unfamiliar worlds. These were giants like Jupiter, hotter than Venus, tearing around their suns inside the orbit of Mercury. Astronomers have since discovered planets where 10,000 mile-per-hour winds whip up metallic storm clouds that rain molten iron. The diversity of extremes is captivating, and also somewhat beside the point. What were really after are more Earths.

DeepMinds Newest AI Programs Itself to Make All the Right DecisionsJason DorrierAlphabets DeepMind is taking this automation further by developing deep learning algorithms that can handle programming tasks which have been, to date, the sole domain of the worlds top computer scientists (and take them years to write). The DeepMind team described a new deep reinforcement learning algorithm that was able to discover its own value functiona critical programming rule in deep reinforcement learningfrom scratch.

New Zealand Is About to Test Long-Range Wireless Power TransmissionJason DorrierAfamous image of inventor Nikola Tesla shows him casually sitting on a chair, legs crossed, taking notesoblivious to the profusion of artificial lightning rending the air meters away. By then, Tesla and raw electricity were like an old married couple. The experiments, conducted in Colorado, led to one of Teslas most audacious proposals: To power the world without wires.

Moores Law Lives: Intel Says Chips Will Pack 50 Times More TransistorsJason DorrierThereve been many predictions that Moores Law is, finally, ending. But, perhaps also predictably, the company whose founder coined Moores Law begs to differ. In akeynote presentationat this yearsHot Chips conference, Intels chief architect, Raja Koduri, laid out a roadmap to increase transistor densitythat is, the number of transistors you can fit on a chipby a factor of 50. We firmly believe there is a lot more transistor density to come, Koduri said. The vision will play out over timemaybe a decade or morebut it will play out.i

The Secret to a Long, Healthy Life Is in the Genes of the Oldest Humans AliveShelly FanThe key to human longevity, [a global team of scientists] say, lies in the genes of centenarians. These individuals not only live over 100 years, they also rarely suffer from common age-related diseases. That is, theyre healthy up to their last minute. If evolution was a scientist, then centenarians, and the rest of us, are two experimental groups in action. Nature has already given us a genetic blueprint for healthy longevity. We just need to decode it.

6G Will Be 100 Times Faster Than 5Gand Now Theres a Chip for ItVanessa Bates RamirezThough 5Ga next-generation speed upgrade to wireless networksis scarcely up and running (and still nonexistent in many places) researchers are already working on what comes next. It lacks an official name, but theyre calling it 6G for the sake of simplicity (and hey, its tradition). 6G promises to be up to 100 times faster than 5Gfast enough to download 142 hours of Netflix in a secondbut researchers are still trying to figure out exactly how to make such ultra-speedy connections happen.

16 Ways Coronavirus May Change the Way We Look at the WorldCarin IsmThe present situation offers a choice. Either we try to piece the world back together as it was before this catastrophic occurrence, or we can use this shared event as the founding moment of a unifying global narrative. One acknowledging that underneath our badges of belonging we are all vulnerable bodies, very much dependent on each other and on systems of governance.

Construction of the Worlds Biggest Nuclear Fusion Plant Just Started in FranceEdd Gent[Nuclear fusion] produces dramatically more energy than the process of fission that weve already mastered and doesnt produce long-lived radioactive waste. It also doesnt rely on radioactive elements like uranium and plutonium for fuel, instead using abundant isotopes of hydrogen called deuterium and tritium. The only catch is that trying to contain a nuclear fusion reaction is like trying to keep the sun in a box.

Top Wall Street analysts recommend these buys before 2020 comes to a close – CNBC

As the year comes to a close, Wall Street is watching for a possible Santa Claus Rally. Historically, stocks tend to rise during the last five trading sessions of the calendar year, with this rally continuing until the second trading day of the new year.

Since 1969, the S&P 500 has gained 1.3% on average over this seven-day trading period, according to the Stock Trader's Almanac.

There are some stocks investors may want to pick up for 2021 before they close their books on the year. Finding compelling investment opportunities isn't easy. One strategy is to follow the moves of the analysts who consistently get it right. TipRanks analyst forecasting service attempts to find the best-performing analysts on Wall Street, or the analysts with the highest success rate and average return per rating.

Here are the best-performing analysts' five favorite stocks right now:

Top J.P. Morgan analyst Doug Anmuth just joined the Twitter bulls, upgrading the rating to Buy on December 16. Along with the call, the five-star analyst bumped up the price target from $52 to $65, with the new target suggesting 16% upside potential.

Anmuth explains that his price target is based on roughly 30x his 2022 EBITDA estimate, and also translates to approximately 9.5x his 2022 revenue estimate. Although this reflects a premium to advertising and social media peers like Google and Facebook, he believes it is "justified given a depressed EBITDA base and improving momentum in the business beyond 2020."

"We believe Twitter is uniquely positioned as the real-time broadcast and communications network, making it complementary to all other forms of media, including TV," Anmuth commented.

Additionally, Twitter is likely to benefit from the shift toward mobile and video given that the ad product and platform are continuing to improve, in Anmuth's opinion.

That being said, for the analyst to be even more optimistic about the company, he argues "better advertising execution, including diversification toward DR and performance-based, is critical."

Based on his 72% success rate and 32.1% average return per rating, Anmuth scores the #29 spot on TipRanks' ranking.

For RBC Capital's Scot Ciccarelli, Costco is a top pick in the retail space. On December 14, he maintained a Buy rating as well as a $439 price target (20% upside potential).

According to Ciccarelli, "Costco just keeps doing it what it does best," which is delivering strong sales growth and good margin performance. In its most recent quarter, the company posted comp growth of 17.1%, enabling it to generate strong leverage in fiscal Q1 2021, in the analyst's opinion. E-commerce sales surged 86% and now account for roughly 7% of total sales.

Even though U.S. comps moderated, Ciccarelli argues "this modest deceleration seemed to be driven by pull forward activity and more aggressive Black Friday promotions starting as early as late-October from some competitors." On top of this, gross margins reached 13.3% thanks to efficiency gains, labor productivity and significantly lower product spoilage in fresh foods.

What's more, Ciccarelli points out that Costco has the strongest buying power in the retail space because it concentrates all of its scale on a small group of SKUs, while its bigger competitors spread their buying power across millions of SKUs. Additionally, he thinks it has the lowest markup in the industry.

"We believe this combination creates extremely compelling value for their members. As a result, while Costco has indeed benefitted from accelerated shopping activity as more consumer dollars are directed towards goods rather than services/experiences (what we call the Retail Lift), we believe Costco is extremely well positioned regardless of broader economic trends in 2021," Ciccarelli opined.

Currently tracking a 76% success rate and a 20.6% average return per rating, Ciccarelli ranks among the top 52 analysts on TipRanks' list.

Following MKS Instruments' analyst day, Benchmark's Mark Miller is even more optimistic about its long-term growth prospects. To this end, he lifted his price target from $150 to $175 (17% upside potential), as well as reiterated a Buy rating on December 14.

According to Miller, management painted a very "upbeat picture," with the team expecting the semiconductor business growth to surpass wafer fab equipment spending by 200 basis points between 2020-2025 and its Advanced Products business to grow at GDP plus 300 basis points. Additionally, the company anticipates non-GAAP gross margins of 50%.

"We see upside coming next year in the Advanced Products group lead by improved laser demand due to a rebound in global manufacturing and growth from the E&S segment," Miller stated.

On top of this, the data storage segment is likely to benefit from the ramp of 5G phones as they require more memory content, in Miller's opinion. "Next gen devices require more transistors and higher bit densities. Higher aspect ratios, which require more rf power, have enabled MKS to gain share in the WFE market lead by rf etch applications such as hard mask removal," the analyst explained. In just the first nine months of 2020, MKSI's power solutions business has grown 110% year-over-year.

Miller argues that all of this puts MKSI on a path to achieve higher earnings in FY21. He bumped up his non-GAAP EPS estimate from $8.40 on sales of $2.47 billion to $8.82 on similar sales.

A 71% success rate and 25.8% average return per rating support Miller's #45 ranking.

NeoGenomics is a cancer diagnostics and pharmaceutical services company that works to better patient care by providing improved diagnoses and helping pharmaceutical companies launch cutting-edge therapies based on precision genetics.

The company, last week, received a nod of approval from BTIG, with analyst Mark Massaro initiating coverage with a Buy rating and the Street high price target of $60 (12% upside potential).

"We view NEO as the leading high-growth reference lab focused in oncology offering comprehensive cancer diagnostic tests and pharma services for pathologists, oncologists, academic medical centers, and pharma companies," Massaro noted.

To back this up, the five-star analyst points out that NEO has the broadest cancer diagnostic testing portfolio in the U.S., with it also boasting a "strong track record of acquiring and integrating market-leading lab companies over the years." This includes the acquisitions of Clarient, Genoptix and the oncology assets of Human Longevity, which were purchased at average revenue multiples of 2.5x revenue, compared to the average industry takeout multiples of 6.5x.

Massaro added, "We are positive on NEO's May 2020 partnership and ownership stake in liquid biopsy company Inivata, as NEO looks to expand its footprint in the high-value liquid biopsy and minimal residual disease (MRD) testing space. We think NEO will likely announce additional deals from here, and we regard NEO as a 'onestop oncology shop' as it leverages a leadership position in the pathology and oncology channel."

Massaro's stellar track record is evidenced by his 66% success rate and 28.2% average return per rating.

Wall Street's 6th best-performing analyst, Brian Fitzgerald, of Wells Fargo, believes the negative investor reaction following game developer Zynga's Q3 earnings results was "overdone," with the stock now appearing "inexpensive relative to growth." With this in mind, he upgraded the rating from Hold to Buy on December 15. In addition, he kept the price target at $12.50, implying 26% upside potential.

"We think shares of ZNGA present a favorable risk/reward in light of a new, more detailed strategic vision of organic growth, which CEO Gibeau recently articulated. This prompted us to reimagine what ZNGA will look like a few years down the road," Fitzgerald stated.

Putting it simply, the analyst likes what he's seeing. He envisions a vertically integrated ad network which, when combined with Rollic's games, could move the hyper-casual audience into the ZNGA network for monetization through ads and in-app purchases, while reducing UA costs. Additionally, its portfolio is now diverse enough to provide several options to allocate advertising spend on genres and regions with the best ROI, which could create a "less volatile recurring revenue stream," in Fitzgerald's opinion.

What's more, Fitzgerald sees "expansion of ZNGA's TAM beyond mobile by taking key franchises cross-platform in a cost-effective manner due to enhancements in game engine technology."

"We think FY21E FCF yield of over 5% limits the risk of underperformance as mgmt. has a successful track record of allocating capital into a TAM growing ~10%/year; moreover, management's commentary on December 9 suggests ZNGA's Q4 is still on track for double digit organic year-over-year growth," Fitzgerald added.

The Wells Fargo analyst boasts an impressive 83% success rate and 43% average return per rating.

Fasting to Enhance Longevity? – L.A. Weekly

During the holidays, fasting may be the furthest thing from your mind. Once the Holidays are over, however, it may suddenly seem like an attractive option. Eating, as a basic activity of daily living, compensates for feelings of hunger and provides necessary nutrients to our physiological systems. Moreover, what we eat and how we eat can play a significant role in our health and well-being and may even impact longevity. Because of the significance of eating on well-being, diet interventions receive extensive attention in the media. Among different types of dietary interventions, fasting is emerging as the most significant; current research suggests that changing ones eating habits by reducing caloric intake, when coupled with modifying meals schedules may delay or prevent the onset of many types of diseases and extend years of functionality to cells, tissues and organs.

Dr. Valter Longo, director of the USC Longevity Institute, has done numerous studies supporting the positive effects of fasting on longevity. The rationale of fasting to improve health can be explained, in part, by the Disposable Soma Theory, a major theory in physiology of aging studies. This theory posits that the notion of senescence is the decrease in an organisms ability to reproduce and causes a related increase in the chances it will die as it ages. It assumes that the body needs to budget and appropriate the energy for various tasks to maintain subsistence. In allocating energy for different physiological activities, there is a tradeoff between using it for reproduction or for cell, tissue or organ repair.

In other words, if a substantial proportion of available energy is used for growing new tissues, less energy will remain for reproduction, regeneration and repair of existing body components. When we eat less food, our systems may interpret this behavior as a signal that the energy acquired from digesting food is becoming scarce. Therefore, our body will adjust so as not to deplete remaining energy by using too much of the it for reproductive activities. Instead, the body will focus more on maintaining the function of existing tissues and wait for a more suitable time to reproduce. As a result, existing tissues will be better maintained and protected. In maintenance mode, our body systems, tissues and organs will be kept strong and healthy. That is a general explanation on how fasting can reduce morbidity and contribute to longevity.

Fasting refers to purposefully restricting ones diet for a specific period. Traditionally, fasting was practiced in the manner of continuous caloric restriction, but the development of clinical trials and carefully designed programs have enriched our understanding of the effects of calorie-restricted fasting. Andrea Di Francesco, Clara Di Germanio, Michel Bernier, and Rafael de Cabo (2018) categorized fasting in four domains:

Human beings have practiced fasting and the unpleasant variance we know as starvation. However, because of their using unsophisticated medical technologies, the potential health benefits of fasting were not noted adequately. Today, fasting is receiving more attention and current scientific, social and economic developments make the health and beauty effects of fasting more attractive to consider. We have basic recommendations for those who may be considering one of these fasting options:

First, when deciding to practice fasting, take the time to do some research on possible negative outcomes. This will enhance your health literacy regarding fasting and possible consequences.

Second, before beginning a program of fasting, consult with a professional nutritionist on how best to proceed. For people who have no experience in fasting, suddenly being deprived of certain foods may be challenging; therefore, it is necessary to take a strategic approach to dieting to improve the odds of achieving diet goals.

Third, if it becomes impossible to tolerate the dietary restrictions, feel free to give up and restart when further motivated. The first few days of fasting could be difficult to bear. If the uncomfortable feelings have exceeded our level of tolerance, we should not feel guilty. Sometimes, ones own body may recognize that to continue fasting may result in unintentional, negative consequences to our health and well-being. Often, we can back off for a period and restart fasting when we are so inclined.

Remember that unless approached systematically, after undertaking weight-loss dieting, the weight lost often comes back and, even worse, additional pounds may accrue without carefully maintaining diet guidelines.

Practicing yoga at home is a convenient and safe way to exercise during the pandemic. A yoga mat is appreciated by anyone from first-time practitioners to expert yoginis. Theres a plethora of virtual classes on streaming platforms and apps. Online fitness communities build accountability and motivation. Besides flow sequences, we use our mats daily for deep stretching, foam rolling and core work.

Fingertip Pulse Oximeter

A pulse oximeter is a small battery-powered device that clips onto your finger and uses red light to measure how much oxygen is in your blood. Blood oxygen level (called oxygen saturation or SpO2) is considered a vital sign, just like your heart rate, blood pressure and temperature. Normal SpO2 is 95-100%. A number below 92% warrants a call to the doctor. Patients with COVID-19 often have decreased SpO2, even if theyre feeling fine. Many dont seek medical care until theyre severely short of breath, but by then, their oxygen level is dangerously low. Monitoring your oxygen level at home lets you catch the early warning signs and get prompt treatment. A pulse oximeter is useful for monitoring other chronic health conditions such as heart disease, emphysema and sleep apnea, too. You can purchase one at a pharmacy or online without a prescription.

Bike Helmet

If you are considering gifting a bicycle, skateboard, scooter, pogo stick or inline skates, then we suggest bundling a safety helmet with it. Helmets not only protect our heads and brains, but also playfully reflect our personalities and style. Weve often admired the dinosaur helmet featuring 3D scales worn by our neighbors five-year-old son! We recommend looking out for CPSC & ASTM certified helmets.

Motivational Water Bottle

Theres no shortage of reusable water bottles out there, but were intrigued with the emergence of motivational water bottles. Available from multiple retailers, these bottles inspire with reminder phrases (keep drinking) and positive affirmations (well done!) to encourage you to drink at least a gallon of water throughout the day. The pandemic has given us a moment, maybe too many free moments, to slow down and do some introspection; one important thing weve realized is the need for more self-care, and for us, it starts with irrigating our body and mind.

Nighttime Lights and Reflectors

The Norwegians have an expression Frilufsliv which translates to free air life it promotes open air living to celebrate time outdoors every day for all ages and in all weather. Spending a few hours outdoors improves our mood and the way we experience the world. As the sun sets at 4:30pm, its important to extend the active parts of the day, even if daytime is dark out. To do this safely, we want to be conscious of and protect ourselves against any possible hazards! We encourage you to consider gifts of clothing reflectors or lights for the runners, joggers and dog-walkers in your life. If its in your budget, then pair it with fleece workout clothes to stay warm and dry while outside.

Ergonomic Seat Cushion

As promoters of health, we discourage a sedentary lifestyle whenever possible, but prolonged sitting has become inevitable with work-from-home and online-schooling. A memory-foam or gel cushion can transform a stiff office or dining chair to give you comfort and support. It can even relieve hip and back pain and prevent bad posture.

Admittedly, these gift ideas are partially influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has given us the opportunity to examine and reimagine our health habits and routines. As we look to the new year, we hope these suggestions will help inspire and reinforce your healthy activities and daily habits.

Healthy Living: Adapt your holiday traditions to the pandemic – Norwich Bulletin

By Dr. Marc Cerrone, For The Bulletin| The Bulletin

It might be difficult not to feel a little Grinchy this holiday season. Like everything else in 2020, our holiday traditions promise to look a little different than in the past because of the pandemic. However, living in a COVID-19 era doesnt necessarily mean you cant enjoy the holidays. It just may require a bit more creativity. And, you might make some new traditions along the way.

Here are some COVID-19 takes on holiday traditions that can keep you and your family safe.

Deliver meals to friends and neighbors. Cook up your favorite holiday recipe and deliver it using a contactless delivery method such as leaving the meal outside the front door of the persons home.

Host a virtual family gathering. Video chat sessions have become even more popular during COVID-19. Consider hosting a festive holiday Zoom event with friends and family. Make it a holiday-themed ugly sweater party, or a classic holiday movie marathon!

Plan a virtual shopping trip. Make plans with a friend to go holiday shopping online at the same time. Share links to special deals and holiday gift ideas with your favorite messaging app.

Decorate your home. Deck the halls both inside and outside your home so neighbors and community members can enjoy the display from afar.

Go on a neighborhood lights stroll. Take in all the lights and decorations this year by walking, driving, or bicycling through neighborhoods.

Spread some joy. Write down how much the people you love mean to you and send it out to them. Or write a thank you card to an essential worker to brighten their day.

Stream holiday performances online. If watching dancers perform The Nutcracker or other holiday classics is part of your familys traditions, then youre in luck. Many theaters and performance groups are offering virtual showings this year.

Give back. Find ways to safely volunteer in your community, whether its supporting a holiday toy drive or donating to a local food bank. Its the season for giving, and now more than ever, others can use our generosity and kindness.

Most importantly, this holiday season remember to take precautions to limit the spread of COVID-19 wear a mask, wash your hands, limit gatherings and keep your distance so that we may gather together without worry in celebrations yet to come.

Tucson doctor tackles 240-mile ultra race to spread message about the benefits of healthy living – Arizona Daily Star

My business would be nonexistent if people would do the right things, Len said.

Len takes exercise to the extreme, waking at 3:45 a.m. every day so he can get in a 15-mile run and make it into the operating room by 7:30.

I go to bed at 8:30 (at night), before my kids do, Len said.

Dr. Luis Leon poses with Moab 240s medical director, Brian Wilford. The Moab 240 was Leons 5th ultra race. Hes planning on another in the spring.

Growing up in Peru, Len played soccer from Monday to Monday, day and night. Soccer was his life until he left Peru in 1997 to attend UCLA for his surgical residency.

New to Los Angeles and with his life consumed by the hospital, Len realized he wouldnt have time for team sports. He started looking for individual sports, settling on triathlons. But after a few years, he no longer had time to train for the cycling and swimming components.

That was when Len found marathons. When those didnt seem like enough, he entered longer races, with courses up to 100 miles. In 2010, Len ran his first race longer than 100 miles. The Moab 240 was his fourth race of 200 miles or more.

Training for races of that distance is much different than training for marathons, in part because the mental component is so important.

When you put yourself in this event, the first night of the first day, you have to know that theres three more days and nights coming ahead of you that you have to run on blistered feet, Len said.

Healthy Living: Combat Seasonal Affective Disorder during the pandemic – Q13 FOX (Seattle)

Q13's Ali Bradley reports.

SEATTLE - We are in the thick of both the holiday season and the pandemic. For many, emotions are running high, and for others, Seasonal Affective Disorder is in full force.

Dr. Jim Polo is the Behavioral Health Medical Director with Regence and he says,"Sometimes referred to as the winter blues. The symptoms are very similar to major depression which include a sad mood, lack of energy, increased sleep, and social withdrawal."

In states that see more sunshine, Dr. Polo says, on average, 1% of the population experience Seasonal Affective Disorder, or S.A.Dduring the fall and winter months. In Washington, the prevalence is much higher, at 10%. However, the reason we experience S.A.D is still a little murky,"The exact cause of seasonal affective disorder is not known but it is suspected that it is related to the decreased number of hours of natural light and sunshine that we have during those winter months."

Dr. Polo says the holidays can make S.A.Dworse. While many of us look forward to this time of year, it can also be filled with stress or other things that make you feel badly,"For people that lack family, sometimes loneliness can affect their sense of being depressed."

Dr. Polo says the gloomy months here in Washington coupled with 'COVIDfatigue' is really wreaking havoc on our mental health and it is only expected to get worse,"Its expected that upwards of 30-60 percent of Washingtonian adults are going to experience depression this year."

Here are some things Dr. Polo says you can do to improve S. A.D:

You can use a lightbox, which is a medical-grade device that provides natural lights of 10,000 lux, which is a measure of brightness.

Something you can do that wont cost a thing, is get outside. Dr. Polo says to get into an area with some natural light, it can be cloudy and you can still get benefits from being outside.

Also, take care of your body. Eat well, get your exercise in, and get plenty of sleep.

Next, make sure you have a balance between leisure and work. Take some time to get away from the stress.

Another thing to be mindful of is not turning to your device to "doom scroll" when you are just looking for negative information on the internet Instead, Dr. Polo says use your device to connect to others, engage directly with people you know and love.

Dr. Polo says if you continue to have difficulties with depression, there are some warning signs to watch for. If you are having trouble concentrating or just getting things done that are normally easy, maybe you are socially withdrawn, it is hard to be social in a pandemic, but you can still connect with others. You may find yourself being irritable more often around other people, andfinally, Dr. Polo says if you are sleeping too much or not at all, or feeling hopeless you could be experiencing depression,"If youre thinking about hurting yourself, or harming yourself, dont hesitate to reach out and get help, right away."

Remember, you are not alone. The amount of people experiencing these emotions and feelings of depression has been on a steady incline since this pandemic began.

Self-Care Tips for Staying Happy and Healthy This Winter of COVID-19 – Everyday Health

Wondering how youre going to keep your spirits up when the sun sets in the middle of the afternoon, the temperatures are bitter, and the COVID-19 health crisis is worsening and increasingly limiting leisure and social activities?

Its been a tough year. And on top of whatever hardships you've been dealt, you may now be facing the reality that some of the usual wintertime activities you do (holiday gatherings, winter getaways, dinners with friends, indoor sports, and just about anything indoors) are going to be much more difficult or canceled, thanks to the pandemic.

Mental health experts say paying more attention to all the little ways we practice self-care (everything you do to stay physically and mentally well) is going to be more important than ever. Whatever your usual self-care routines are might not be enough by themselves given that were living through a pretty challenging time right now, explains Travis Westbrook, PhD, a clinical psychologist at the Wexner Medical Center at The Ohio State University in Columbus.

Think about it. Are you feeling more stressed than usual? Maybe listening to music or a morning jog usually keeps your anxieties at bay. You might find theyre not really cutting it these days. You might need to get creative when it comes to whats going to work for you to keep your energy and mood up, Westbrook says. Sometimes we really have to lay our foot on the gas pedal when it comes to taking care of ourselves.

If youre looking for a little inspiration for how to ramp up your self-care routine, here are nine tips from Westbrook and others.

If youve been spending your days at home throughout the pandemic (working, taking care of family, or otherwise), you know youre part of a lucky group who has some control over how much virus risk you face. But you may simultaneously be finding the monotony of your routine brings a stress of its own.

Every hour looks like the next hour; every day looks like the next day. We miss those subtle cues such as the commute or the stop for coffee on the way into the office, says Paul S. Pottinger, MD, an infectious disease doctor at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle.

No matter what your current daily routine looks like, think about how you can adapt it for the cooler, darker months. If you have the flexibility, take a walk during the middle of the day when its sunniest. Consider getting fresh air first thing in the morning if you find yourself less motivated to go outdoors in the evening after dark. Allot time for water, coffee, and tea breaks to give yourself time away from your screen if youre working at a computer.

If people can somehow build in a rhythm and routine in their day that is somewhat predictable, not too complicated, and leaves room for flexibility, that could help reduce stress and make the workday feel more manageable, Dr. Pottinger says.

I love the idea of taking yoga [or other exercise routines] outside as long as youre dressed in warm clothes that allow for movement and you take plenty of time to warm up, says Shala Worsley, a certified yoga instructor at the Asheville Yoga Center in Asheville, North Carolina. Outdoor exercise can help serve up an extra dose of vitamin D (sunlight triggers production of this nutrient), which is important for energy and mood.

Try a couple rounds of sun salutations, and then move on to a heat-building pose for example, plank pose, Worsley says.

And if the cold temperatures are going to keep you from heading out of your home, be honest with yourself and schedule an alternative, suggests Westbrook. In those cases, it can be important to try to carve out time and plan an activity in advance. You could schedule a Zoom workout with a friend, with each of you [doing the same workout] in your respective living rooms, he says.

Although working or learning remotely can make it tempting to sleep in, staying consistent with your usual bed and wake-up times all year round will help keep energy levels up, mood lifted, and sleep more sound, says Westbrook. Dont beat yourself up if youre not perfect but do your best to get a good amount of sleep every night, he adds.

In the long term, a night of poor or long sleep here and there likely wont do a great deal of harm. But over time, irregular sleep patterns have been linked with higher risk for hypertension, elevated blood sugar, obesity, and developing heart disease, according to a 2018 study published in Scientific Reports. And oversleeping is associated with health problems, including depression, headaches, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. Most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night of the year (no matter the season!), according to the National Sleep Foundation.

Seasonal affective disorder (sometimes called seasonal depression) is a variant of clinical depression where symptoms emerge and worsen in a seasonal pattern, says Westbrook. It can happen in the summer, too, but its far more common to show up in the winter months. Many people also experience the far less serious symptoms of the winter blues, characterized by a drop in mood and energy levels in the cold-weather months.

I recommend greeting the sun in the morning by opening your blinds whenever possible; this can help keep our biological clock regular, he says. Exposure to light in the morning helps keep your body clock aligned with its natural circadian rhythm, keeping you energized throughout the day and triggering the release of melatonin (the hormone that signals to your brain its time to sleep) at night, according to a paper published in Environmental Health Perspectives. Exposure to bright morning light has also been shown to help lessen symptoms of seasonal effective disorder, according to the authors.

If you suspect you may have symptoms of clinical depression, talk with your doctor. Treatment for depression with a seasonal pattern can often include psychotherapy, medication, light therapy, and vitamin D supplementation, according to Westbrook.

Socializing in person is going to tougher to do safely in the winter (in places where its too cold to gather outdoors). Consider ways to stay connected via phone and video calls. Consider a live, virtual workout class or schedule a virtual game night with friends, says Westbrook. Pre-COVID-19, Westbrook and his friends used to meet at different restaurants each weekend. Now we get takeout and have a meal or happy hour together via Zoom or FaceTime, he says.

You can take turns hosting the game night on Zoom, or try a service like Geeks Who Drink, a website that offers virtual team-based trivia games.

You may be focused on COVID-19 protection, but getting your flu shot is even more important than ever this year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu shot except in rare exceptions, states the CDC. Getting a flu shot not only helps protect you from the seasonal flu but also helps reduce the strain on health systems, which is higher than normal in many parts of the country due to COVID-19, according to the agency.

RELATED: Rita Wilson Survived COVID-19 and It Made Her a Flu-Shot Advocate

Were seeing just an absolute explosion of [COVID-19] cases, Pottinger says. Its vitally important that people do everything possible to stay healthy right now, he says.

Feeling cooped up, lonely, stressed, or bored can all be triggers for slipping into unhealthy habits when it comes to snacking or maybe imbibing one drink too many, Westbrook says. Pay attention to what situations leave you most vulnerable to these vices, and keep healthy triggers on hand for those occasions, he suggests. If you find yourself eating too much junk food on movie night, stock up on some healthy, portion-controlled snacks instead, like fresh fruit, nuts, or vegetables and hummus. If Zoom happy hours leave you throwing back a few too many drinks, consider swapping with a cup of herbal tea or a mocktail.

Vitamin D levels tend to drop in the winter months, when were spending more time indoors because a major source of vitamin D is sunlight. And given that vitamin D helps with immune function (that means it strengthens the bodys defense against viruses and other germs), its particularly important to make sure youre getting enough once the seasons change, according to Tod Cooperman, MD, president and founder of ConsumerLab.com, a provider of independent test results and information designed to help consumers and healthcare professionals identify the best-quality health and nutrition products.

A 2017 meta-analysis published in The BMJ found that supplementing with vitamin D was associated with reducing the risk of respiratory infections, especially for people who were vitamin D deficient. Studies that show a link between vitamin D deficiency and the spread of COVID-19 are still somewhat preliminary, but the data does indicate the vitamin may help protect our bodies from the disease.

Dr. Cooperman makes the following recommendations: Get your vitamin D levels checked. If youre deficient, ask your doctor about taking a vitamin D supplement or a multivitamin that contains it. A daily dose of 600 to 1,000 IU is safe. And consider taking a magnesium supplement, too, which helps regulate vitamin D levels. Approximately 200 milligrams (mg) per day from a supplement is safe, according to Cooperman.

And remember, because there are risks associated with taking too much of either supplement, its always a good idea to talk with your healthcare provider before trying something new.

No matter what your holiday or winter plans are this year, theyve likely been somehow rearranged because of the global pandemic, which can be either a minor or major source of stress. If youve recently lost a loved one or a job or endured other difficult experiences, you also might be feeling extra stress, sadness, or loneliness right now, Westbrook says.

Do reach out for help and support when you need it, whether via a friend, family member, or medical professional, he recommends. You dont have to struggle with these issues all alone.
