The year without everything: Here are some of the things we missed in Fayetteville in 2020 – The Fayetteville Observer

Akira Kyles|The Fayetteville Observer

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a lot from us in 2020, including what would have been an eventful year full of traditions and gatherings.

Here are some of the things that didn't happen in 2020:

Dogwood Festival: A four-day festival that features live performances, a food and wine event and various vendors. The event was supposed to be held in April and was rescheduled to October before beingcanceled.

Umoja Festival: A festival held in partnership with the Fayetteville Arts Councilandthe Umoja Group Inc., a nonprofit organization that initiates and supports the history, arts and culture of Africans, African-Americans and Caribbeans. The festival has commonly been held in August and always attracts a good crowd.

Fayetteville Vegan Festival: A festival to celebrate veganism in Fayetteville. The festival, which would have been in its third year, was supposed to be held in September

International Folk Festival: A festival that highlights the diversity of Fayetteville and showcases international cuisine and cultures from around the world. This year would have been the 42nd anniversary of this event. The festival was originally supposed to be held in September. The Arts Council of Fayetteville-Cumberland County hostedan hour-long online eventfeaturing cooking demonstrations, music, dance and cultural activities.

Christmas: During the Christmas Parade, usually held in early to mid-December, thousands of spectators line downtown streets to watch a procession of high school marching bands, local businesses, civic groups and others.

Halloween: The Zombie walkand prom, which is usually held at the end of October, was canceled due to the pandemic. This would have been the event's 11th year.

Fayetteville State homecoming: Fayetteville State University canceled its homecoming and associated events, including the parade.

Graduation: Various in-person high school and college graduations were cancelled or held in some virtual capacity. Cumberland County high schools receivedkeepsake programs and tickets even though their graduation ceremonies were held differentlyfrom previous years.

Sports

The Woodpeckers:Fayetteville's minor league baseball team, haven't been able to play since the beginning of the pandemic in late March. The 2021 season is set to begin with the Woodpeckers reclassified as a Class A affiliate of the Houston Astros.

Vegan Support Center Opens In Middle East: The First Of Its Kind In The Region – Plant Based News

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A new vegan support center has opened in the Middle East the first of its kind in the region.

The Lebanese Vegans Social Hub, in Beirut, was created by animal advocate Seb Alex working with the Lebanese Vegans organization.

According to Alex, the center will promote veganism and the existence and work of animal advocates of color, as well as distributing free food, and holding screenings and other events.

The center opening follows the devastating explosion that took place in Beirut in August this year, killing more than 200 people, injuring more than 2,000, and killing, injuring, and displacing many animals. It made 300,000 people homeless overnight.

After the explosion, Seb Alex and Lebanese Vegansdistributed vegan food boxesand ready meals to more than 2,000 families, initially distributing free food seven days a week.

They were given a space to work from a former cultural center that had been unused for 20 years. Now they have been given the site permanently, and have been working to transform it into the center, which had a soft opening on November 1 (World Vegan Day) attended by around 80 people. The center opened officially on December 22.

Because of the financial crisis in Lebanon which has led to a currency value drop the countrys banks have blocked withdrawals or online transactions.

This means the center is dependent on international support and is fundraising, so far raising around $4,000 of its $20,000 goal.

In a statement sent toPlant Based News, Seb Alex said: The center will run animal rights campaigns, distribute free vegan food, hold workshops, documentary screenings, and have a vegan cafe, shop, and co-working area.

[It will push] veganism and animal rights forward and showing the world the existence of vegans of color and their work for other animals.

Kiwis urged to ‘go vegetarian’ in 2021 – Newshub

Another survey conducted in February by Colmar Brunton showed an increase of 50 percent from the previous year in the number of Kiwis aged 18 or over who always or mostly eat plant-based meals.

"Around 15 percent of Kiwis are avoiding meat most or all of the time, and we believe that number is growing," NZ Vegetarian Society spokesperson Philip McKibbin said on Tuesday.

"It's easy to see why. Vegetarianism and veganism are better for the animals, better for the planet, and better for your health. It's a no-brainer."

McKibbin said there are five main reasons why New Zealanders should consider embracing a meat-free diet.

It's better for the animals

Just like us, other animals have interests and deserve our respect, said McKibbin.

"Making changes to what we eat can benefit them."

It's better for the planet

McKibbin said animal agriculture is a leading cause of pollution to land and waterways. He also pointed to the fact it accounts for almost half of the country's greenhouse gas emissions.

"By making changes to what we eat, we can reduce our impact on the Earth."

It's better for your health

The NZ Vegetarian Society argues that well-balanced vegetarian and vegan diets are "typically healthier than diets containing meat". However, they add, "it is important to do your research".

"It is especially important for vegans to ensure that they get enough B12, as this is not naturally-occurring in plant foods."

It can be cheaper

McKibbin said going meat-free can result in lower food bills.

"If you find some recipes you can make at home, using simple ingredients, it will not cost very much."

It's enjoyable

The final reason McKibbin gave was that experimenting with new recipes can be fun.

"There are so many exciting foods to try, from vegan pies to dairy-free ice cream New veg products are being released all the time," he said.

Not everyone believes vegetarianism or veganism is good for you though, with many questioning whether it really is possible to get all the nutrients the body needs from a plant-based diet.

Many have expressed particular concerns over whether it is safe for children to go meat-free.

Earlier this year Auckland University's head of nutrition and dietetics Dr Clare Wall told Newshub veganism could be safe for children, but it required knowledge and planning to ensure their nutritional needs were being met.

Because children have higher nutrient needs than adults, their growing muscles require more protein, their growing bones more calcium and vitamin D and their growing brains more iron and vitamin B12, Dr Wall said.

For a vegan child to not develop deficiencies, they need to be taking a vitamin B12 supplement and eating all of the different plant-based proteins - different varieties of pulses, beans, legumes, and nuts and seeds, she said.

Gulftimes : Will you get the vaccine? – Gulf Times

Its the topic dominating conversations around the world as countries begin to start the so far optional vaccination campaign against the Covid-19.Since all medications currently go through animal testing and animal products are commonly used in their manufacturing, decisions around taking medication can be complex for vegans. Many vegans find compromising their beliefs in this way to distressing, but the truth is it has never been more important for us to talk about the definition of veganism in the context of medications, including vaccines. The definition of veganism recognises that it is not always possible or practicable to avoid animal use, which is particularly relevant to medical situations. In the case of Covid-19, scientists (and world leaders) recognise that vaccination will play a fundamental role in tackling the pandemic and saving lives. As all vaccines currently are tested on animals, at this stage it is impossible to have a vaccine that has been created without animal use.At the end of the day, as there is no plan for compulsory vaccination, it is the responsibility of each individual to make an informed decision about vaccines, bearing in mind the definition of veganism, and your own beliefs, while respecting the science. Its a sensitive subject. UK media reported that Pfizer and BioNTech, the big pharma companies behind the vaccine, have treated monkeys and mice with contempt. While their human researchers have been protected with elaborate PPE, the animals in their care have been trapped and deliberately infected. Some were injected with an inoculation first and some werent.Everyone wants to see the back of Covid-19 but with vegan beliefs, or as a strict vegan, should we accept a jab thats the result of animal cruelty? Again, its a personal consideration, and much of the world agree that it should only be made by the individual. There is evidence that most epidemics and pandemics, including Covid-19, have actually been caused by humans exploiting animals. In August, a white paper found that nearly every major zoonotic disease (an infectious disease that is transmitted between species from animals to humans outbreak) such as Covid over the last 120 years is linked to animal exploitation, including mass meat consumption. The human cost is huge: even before Covid-19, two million people were dying from these kinds of diseases each year, as a result of exploiting animals, and the spill over that occurs from animal to human.A separate report from the UN said the number of zoonotic epidemics the ones that can be transmitted from animals to people is rising, from Ebola to Sars to West Nile virus and Rift Valley fever. The authors warned that although the world is treating the health and economic symptoms of this coronavirus pandemic, governments are ignoring the root causes: humans destruction of nature and meat eating. We need to wake up. Since it was exploiting animals that got us into this mess, its both immoral and ill-advised to continue to exploit more animals now, and we need educating about this in order to reduce pandemics, respect animals, and live healthier, longer lives as a global population.* The author is an expert in vegan wellbeing and health. How these Northern Ireland people all got a taste for the vegan lifestyle and stuck to it – Belfast Telegraph

Kim and Billy Dixon, from the Ards peninsula, decided to try veganism after watching The Game Changers documentary which was released in 2018.

im (56) has now launched the One Earth vegan food service, delivering foods such as nut roasts, lentil and chickpea burgers, flapjacks and vegan mince pies to clients.

"I had been thinking about it for a long time - I used to be vegetarian, but I went off it," she says. "But after watching The Game Changers I thought 'do you know what, I'll give it a go'. What convinced me was seeing what a difference it's made to people's physique and energy levels. I have noticed a big difference in my energy.

"I actually didn't find it hard to do at home, because I enjoy making food. I bought a few cookbooks and followed them and now I make up my own recipes.

"My biggest problem is if we were going out for coffee, it's really limited. We always say we'll take our own but you never do.

"I make a lot of nut roasts - they have lots of flavour, and a lot of lentil stews and vegan burgers. We also take vitamin B12 supplements (recommended for people on a vegan or vegetarian diet). I made an appointment with the doctor pre-lockdown and he confirmed there was nothing I was low in."

Inspirational speaker Billy (68) says converting to a plant based diet wasn't as hard as he had expected.

"I've never missed meat or animal products at all," he says.

"Kim has been brilliant, how she's put meals together, getting the flavours in - that seems to be the key. It gives you more energy. The only thing I have to be careful of is making sure you get enough B12, especially as you get older. We just take the supplement and that's it."

Kim's lentil and chickpea burgers (makes 6)

What you'll need

Cup of chickpeas, drained and crushed

2 cups of cooked green lentils

Cup porridge oats

1 onion, chopped

1 red pepper, chopped

3 cloves garlic, crushed

1tbsp of tomato puree

1 tsp rosemary

Salt and pepper

Tablespoon of oil

Method

Fry onion in shallow pan. Add garlic, red pepper and rosemary and fry gently for another 2 minutes. Put chickpeas, lentils and porridge in a bowl, mix and add tomato puree and seasoning. When cooled, shape the mixture into rounds and fry each side for approx. 3 mins until brown.

Economics graduate and half marathon runner Victoria Atkinson (22), from Ballygowan, who runs the Irish Vegan Runner blog, became vegan at 16 but fell off the wagon until three years ago.

"When I was 16, one of the girls in school turned vegan," she explains. "Back then I would have eaten lots of cheese and chicken nuggets and she said to me 'You could never do it'. I said I could and that was the first time I turned vegan - it lasted about a year.

"But I met a boy and I was sort of scared about what he would think. I went back onto dairy very slowly. We would have been at his family's house a lot - he was a chef and I was worried about what people would think."

However, three years ago, the veganism bug bit again.

"I got in contact with a friend who was vegan and we went to a vegan restaurant, and I thought 'Why should I care what people say?' So I decided to do it again, but this time I watched documentaries and did my research. My main reason for being vegan isn't really the animals - the environment is the biggest motivator for me. I want to help the environment (those promoting veganism say that being vegan reduces the demand for intensive agriculture, and producing meat requires more land and results in more carbon emissions)."

Victoria takes B12 supplements with folic acid, iron and zinc and says being vegan has made her more mindful about what she eats.

Part of the problem the first time, she says, is that she was eating the same things constantly, but now she has a more varied vegan diet.

"I started getting more into running and I was noticing my times getting better and my recovery between runs improved," she says "I just feel full of energy all the time - my coach would say I'm hyper!"

Victoria uses a lot of tofu and tempeh (a soy product), and substitutes mince with lentils.

"I don't really miss anything," she says.

"It's funny because if you knew me when I was a child I was the one who put away a bag of Babybel cheese or ate three bars of chocolate.

"It's funny how things turned out."

Victoria's granola

What you'll need

Oats, pecan nuts, cashew nuts, dried cranberries, cinnamon, maple syrup.

Method

Put a cup of oats in a bowl and mix with chopped pecan and cashew nuts, dates and a handful of dried cranberries with some cinnamon for flavour.

Add maple or agave syrup to bind it together, spread on a baking tray and bake at 180 degrees for 15 minutes, before stirring and returning to the oven for 10 more minutes.

Outdoor recreation project officer Claire McLernon (36), from Lisburn, describes herself as a part-time vegan who is about 90% of the way there. She is married to Michael.

Claire has always been keen to reduce her contribution to climate change and trying to go vegan was part of that.

"I said I was going to be a part-time vegan - it sounds like a cop-out but I know that realistically, when I go to my in-laws' house and I'm handed a cup of tea, I'm not going to make them change their ways," she says.

"If someone hands me a cup of tea with dairy milk, I'll take it. Also, my husband is a coeliac and can only eat gluten free.

"I don't like the term vegan - it implies all or nothing. I think the term sets people back from even trying, so that's why I say 'part-time'."

Claire says sticking to a vegan diet is hardest in social scenarios, but it's easier at home.

"We eat a lot of curries - those are our staples and you can get everything in a curry from a tin. Chickpeas are your chicken - they're what I often use as my substitution for protein. A lot of the curry pastes you buy are naturally vegan," she says. "Sometimes I make a lovely Japanese noodle dish with tofu.

"I've had Chinese food in the last couple of months - I caved and had the honey chilli chicken. I felt really guilty but I then thought 'really, when was the last time I had meat?'. But if you're trying to go vegan, Indian takeaway is actually brilliant food for that.

"I would like to encourage anybody to give it a go. Don't feel you've failed if you don't stick strictly to a vegan diet - it's about reducing your animal intake, so don't beat yourself up if you can't be strictly vegan."

Lurgan-born singer Conleth Kane (36), who lives in London and has just released his new single, Emerald Isle, went vegan during Veganuary last year and is still going strong.

"I've always toyed with the idea of becoming vegan," he says. "I would go out to restaurants and they'd maybe have a vegan option and I looked into going towards vegan last year.

"I set myself the challenge of doing either dry January or Veganuary - and I didn't fancy doing dry January. I thought it was a good opportunity - a good start to the New Year and a new me.

"But I'll never forget it - I went to a friend's dinner party last year on New Year's Eve and there was macaroni cheese and ham and steak. It was kind of like my final supper.

"We all stayed that night, got up the next morning and there was no food and no shops open, and I thought 'So, this is my first day of being a vegan'.

"In the end he gave me a black tea and a pear and I sat there chewing on my pear and watching everybody eating their fry and wondering if I'd done the right thing. I had a hangover as well and I was really craving a fry. I just remember getting to 3pm and being absolutely starving."

Luckily a couple of vegans he was working with gave Conleth a checklist of all the ingredients he should go out and buy - "the snacks, the oat milk, the almond milk, the egg-free pasta, lots of hummus".

"But about four or five days into it, I started feeling that I was starting to get my groove - I knew what to do and what to snack on," he adds.

"I noticed a change - I've been doing Bikram yoga for 12 years and there was always this bit of weight that I could never shift. I noticed my body ironed out a lot and I felt a lot more awake in the afternoon. I was full of energy all day long.

"I believed I was doing a bit for the environment and I felt that mentally and physically it was the right move for me."

Conleth says his vegan lifestyle has given him the incentive to research cookbooks and YouTube channels.

"It gave me the drive to become a much better cook," he says. "I make sure I get a supplement every morning - I use a brand called Viridian which is a really high quality multi-vitamin and mineral supplement formula.

"Sometimes when I go out with friends someone will order a steak and I'll think 'Oh that looks really lovely' but I've gone so far now. I only intended to do 30 days but when I got to the end I was really liking what was going on - it was such a positive change."

Conleth recalls visiting his favourite cafe in Lurgan, Cafe Vibe, for breakfast with his mum and dad, and wondering what to have.

"They just got creative in the kitchen and gave me this incredible vegan breakfast and now it's on the menu!" he says.

Conleth's vegan breakfast

What you'll need

Mushrooms, spinach, asparagus, tomato, avocado, lemon, coconut oil, chilli flakes, sea salt, pepper, bread.

Method

Melt a tablespoon of coconut oil in a stir-fry pan Add chopped mushrooms and tomato and stir for 5 mins. Add the asparagus and spinach and allow it to simmer in a pan until it's cooked to your taste.

Scoop the avocado flesh into a bowl. Squeeze in the lemon juice, then mash with a fork. Toast your bread, drizzle over the oil then put the avocado on top.

Place the toast and avocado on the plate and pour the contents of the pan alongside the toast and season to taste with sea salt, black pepper and chilli flakes.

Curr Med Chem. 2020 Dec 28. doi: 10.2174/0929867328666201228124038. Online ahead of print.

ABSTRACT

Prostate cancer is the fifth cause of tumor-related deaths in man worldwide. Due to its long latency period, this pathology represents an ideal type of disease for chemopreventive studies. Among the drugs considered thus far for the treatment of prostate cancer, the natural compound resveratrol emerged as very promising. Resveratrol is a widely recognized as chemopreventive agent and was shown to potentiate the antitumor activity of conventional chemotherapeutics in several tumors, including prostate cancer. Here we overview the literature of the last five years and summarize the recent achievements of resveratrol and its derivatives as antimetastatic agents in prostate cancer. Moreover, drug combination studies as well as nanomedicine approaches proposed to improve resveratrol activity and to overcome delivery drawbacks are addressed. The last part of the review discusses the clinical trials containing resveratrol ongoing on cancer patients.

An international online conference Formation of a healthy lifestyle among schoolchildren was held within the framework of the eponymous advanced training program for teachers at KRINPO PetrSU.Practice-oriented modular training presupposed not only the participation of teachers in lectures, but also independent work with students according to the proposed innovative program. The participants were warmly greeted by the coordinators of the School-wide approach to preserving childrens health in the North project, thanks to which Karelian teachers were given the opportunity to study free of charge.

The Norwegian guest, Lill Tollerud, a representative of the Norde Follo commune administration, shared Norways experience in promoting a healthy lifestyle among schoolchildren and youth.

Karelian teachers from both Petrozavodsk and remote regions of the republic presented their best practices in the implementation of the program Formation of a healthy lifestyle among schoolchildren.

Elena Kuksova, teacher of the Mikhailovskaya basic secondary school:

The future health of a nation is determined by the health of the younger generation. This program allowed students to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to form the need for a healthy lifestyle, adhere to the rules of hygiene and prevention of diseases, rational nutrition and other methods of maintaining health.

The teacher outlined an interesting fact: at the beginning of the program, half of the children, as shown by the survey, did not think about health as an important factor in life. At the end of the course, the results of the survey changed: the children realized the importance of health and the personal responsibility of each person for their health.

An interesting report at the conference was made by E.N. Anishchenko, a physical education teacher at the Gymnasium No. 17 Municipal Educational Institution, who also noted that before the start of the program, children, due to their age, ranked their health only in 4th place after material and other benefits. Due to their age, they do not think about their health, they do not have enough knowledge about health, and therefore the teachers help in the form of conducting classes on the formation of a healthy lifestyle is very important. The program received prior approval from all parents in the class and was enthusiastically accepted by the children.

Yu.A. Reznichenko, social teacher of the MCOU of the Sortavala MR RK Secondary School No. 1, shared her experience in implementing the program and noted that one of the most interesting classes was the class Our class is the best country. The guys whom the children chose as ministers (and especially the minister of sports) helped a lot in promoting a healthy lifestyle among classmates, especially during distance learning. They came up with various contests and tasks for friends and classmates and together posted the results on social networks. A quiz was developed for the children, video lessons were held. Based on the sketches of the children, a series of souvenirs (pens, badges, notebooks, etc.) with the symbols of a healthy lifestyle was made, and the most active students were encouraged. Zooms My Daily Routine session helped the children a lot to organize their time on distance learning. Parents were actively involved in this, and together with their children they kept a diary of the daily routine, helping the children to find a balance between study and rest, not forgetting about walks in the fresh air and sports exercises.

The teacher of the Sukkozerskaya secondary school N.V. Kovalskaya noted the relevance of the lesson Regulation of complex emotions and healthy lifestyle, as well as lessons on the schoolchilds day regimen, proper nutrition and smoking prevention. The children really liked the memo How to regulate emotions at school, the administration decided to print it and hang it in the classroom corner of each class. The result of the program was that the children figured out what human health depends on, and made a schedule of class activities in the field of health and sports, each child developed his own version of the daily regimen. The parents were also happy to support the implementation of the program at the school.

Teachers of the MKOU Secondary School No. 3, Pudozh Alina and Maria Kalushevsky, noted in their speech that the methodological manual is informative, convenient for work. Parents of pupils were also impressed by the importance of developing a healthy lifestyle and unanimously supported the conduct of classes according to the program for their children. During the lessons it was noticeable that these topics are close to children. They noted that the program for the formation of a healthy lifestyle fits perfectly into the school educational and educational process. With the help of the program, it was possible to motivate children to maintain good physical shape during distance learning.

Yulia Reznichenko, social teacher of Sortavala secondary school 1, shared her experience in organizing healthy lifestyle classes together with her parents. During the training, the children also made up their own daily routine for distance learning. Yulia shared that before telling the children about proper nutrition, after learning about the program, she changed her diet, and from the point of view of personal experience of proper nutrition she shared knowledge with the children, which had a great influence on the children and increased their motivation. During distance learning, the educator teaches Zoom classes twice a week, and students look forward to the classes. Of particular interest were classes on online security and teenage crush.

OBZH teacher Andrey Galyshev from Pindushskaya secondary school 1 organized a circle School of Safety, the participants of which were children with problems in the family. He noted in these children a detached attitude to health and healthy lifestyle, but after three sessions, the attitude changed. According to him, the program not only contributes to the formation of healthy habits, but also to the disclosure of the creative potential of children. According to A.V. Galyshev, the program helps to establish contact with children and change the attitude towards the educational process itself.

Galina Hardykainen from a school in the village of Ambarny, Louhsky District, shared her experience in organizing training according to the program in a small school where only 18 children study, 15 of them took part in teaching a healthy lifestyle. This school also managed to organize cooperation between teachers of different disciplines to implement a healthy lifestyle program, strengthening meta-subject connections.

Teachers from Shuiskaya secondary school No. 1, Derzhavinsky lyceum, secondary school No. 5 in Segezha also shared their positive experience, presenting extensive experience in the field of interdepartmental interaction.

Summing up the results of the program, the listeners expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to take part in the training, to get up-to-date knowledge and methodological literature. The organizers, for their part, also thanked the heads of the interdistrict resource centers of PetrSU for their invaluable assistance in cooperation with district schools.

54 teachers took part in the training, and more than 800 children received useful skills for life. The program will be further implemented at KRINPO PetrSU.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation challenges Americans to kick the New Year Off Right by taking the 21 In 21 – Prostate Cancer Foundation

LOS ANGELES, Calif.,December 22, 2020 The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) challenges Americans to show their support for men affected by prostate cancer and raise awareness about the link between healthy lifestyles and reduced cancer risk by making a New Years resolution to make 21 simple, healthy lifestyle changes in 2021.

The PCFs The Science of Living Well, Beyond Cancer recommends three healthy lifestyle basics that anyone can do to improve their overall health: relax, exercise, and eat real foods, like brightly-colored vegetables and unprocessed whole grains. For 21 in 21, PCF has developed 21 simple, fun, science-based actions based on these principles that people can take to start the year off right.

Lifestyle modifications have been convincingly shown to reduce the risk of the onset of cancer andprogression, including prostate cancer, said Jonathan W. Simons, MD, PCF president and CEO. Rest, exercise, and nutrition are three of the top social determinants of health. People who adopt these healthier lifestyle changes can help reduce their cancer risk and improve their overall health.

Heres how it works: participants pledge to take the challenge at https://www.pcf.org/21in21/ and PCF will send daily science-based tips and activities. For example, on January 1, participants will Unlock the Clock and start 2021 with rest: setting bed and wake times and committing to these for 21 days. Research shows that getting adequate sleep can help ease chronic pain, anxiety, and stress, resulting in a stronger immune system. Then, participants will Start Your Engines on January 2 with exercise: taking a walk and committing to repeating on the next three weekends. There are clear associations between exercise and cancer prevention and recovery, research shows, and taking a walk is good for the circulatory system and can improve mood and overall energy.

Other 21 in 21 science-based actions include eating only plant-based foods for one day; incorporating simple high-intensity interval training (HIIT) exercises into your routine; and turning on the radio and dancing for 20 minutes. All are based on the three principles outlined in The Science of Living Well, Beyond Cancer precision nutrition, precision exercise, and precision rest and are designed to be fun and easy for anyone to do at home.

In addition to receiving 21 daily actions, all participants will also receive a link to the full 21 in 21 calendar so they can personalize their activities and create their own schedule. Achieving a healthy lifestyle isn’t as difficult as you think – yoursun.com

Marlene Veltre was doing all the right things to get and stay healthy. She was following recommended dietary guidelines and went to the gym several times a week. And then one day she found a lump and was diagnosed with breast cancer. How could this happen? she thought. Ive done everything right and my family has no history of cancer.

Turns out that what she thought were the right things werent enough, and some were not the right things after all. Her fast-paced lifestyle had left her chronically stressed, and she had ignored her emotional and mental well-being for too long.

Thus began an 11-year journey through traditional and non-traditional cancer treatments, and research on health and wellness. As she learned more and more, she found conflicting information and research. The deeper she dug into the evidence, the more clear it became, however: health didnt have to be so difficult to attain and maintain. In fact, its quite simple, really.

This is the principle behind Veltres book, The Simple Seven: Body Basics for Vibrant Health, a well-researched and engaging handbook for health and well-being that will transform your thinking on what it takes to be healthy. Instead of struggling against your body, Veltre provides the information and tools to help you work with it. The body is an amazing, adaptive system, and if we can provide it with the right environment and support, it can do its thing naturally heal and repair, adjust and thrive.

SEVEN PRINCIPLES FOR BETTER HEALTH, WELL-BEING AND APPEARANCE

So what does it take to get there? Veltre lays out a plan based on seven principles:

Eat the freshest, most nutrient-dense foods possible.

Drink and stay hydrated by choosing foods that provide hydration.

Move in ways you enjoy, instead of forcing yourself to the gym.

Sleep long enough and deeply enough to feel restored in the morning.

Breathe consciously, stopping to take deep breaths throughout your day.

Clear your bowel every day and support your other waste-clearing organs so they do the job they are intended to do.

Feel better by doing what makes you feel good and releasing what doesnt.

If all of this sounds familiar, it should. What differentiates this book from others, however, is its usefulness for achieving these things in real life not in Instagram life, not in an ideal life where we have unlimited time and resources, not in some fantasy life where our willpower is ironclad.

Veltre provides truly simple changes to work into your daily routine that add up to big benefits in your lifestyle, health and well-being. Her approach is flexible to your preferences and limitations. And she backs up her advice with compelling research in language thats jargon-free and easy to understand. If you are looking for more information, she provides numbered end notes so you can check out the sources for yourself.

There is a final chapter that explains how following the seven principles will not only affect how you feel, but also how you look. Veltre gives us insight into anti-aging, weight loss, skin care, posture, oral health and more demonstrating how what we do for our insides can affect our outsides, for better or for worse.

WELL-WRITTEN, ORGANIZED AND ACTIONABLE

In her introduction, Veltre tells us that The Simple Seven took four years to write and it shows. The writing is transparent as glass, the arguments laid out in logical and compelling ways, and the tone is encouraging and friendly. Main points are introduced, reinforced and built upon for effortless learning. The book design is visually appealing and easy to read, and its organization helps you readily find what you are looking for.

Readers will appreciate that Veltres suggestions and tips are presented separately from scientific explanations, so if youre short on time (or need a quick refresher) you can skip right to them. There are also appendices that go deeper into the subjects of fresh food versus processed food, and a set of amazing emotional-healing tools (called The Method) in the chapter for Feel that is alone worth the price of admission.

Veltre has not only researched and written an informative and engaging book, but shes also created a toolkit thats been thoroughly designed for usability. As we head into the New Years Resolution zone, she gives you a fighting chance to set realistic goals you can actually achieve. In a world of health information overload and perpetuated myths, The Simple Seven is just that a refreshingly simple and doable plan to be your best self, inside and out.

North Central West Virginia experts give tips on sticking to popular New Year’s resolutions – WV News

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WV News) With New Years Day right around the corner, many people are contemplating and committing to resolutions that help promote healthier lifestyles while they put 2020 behind them.

Getting in shape and weight loss remain among the most popular resolutions, and Dr. Elizabeth H. Hess, MD, United Hospital Center Family Medicine Residency Associate Program director and Integrative Medicine director, said its important to take some things into account in order to be successful.

I think its important when you think about a New Year/New You theme that its not limited to resolutions about a specific weight loss goal. We often focus on numbers on the scale but a new you should start with a mindset and emphasize how you accept yourself and choose to take steps that will help you feel better and stronger and more empowered as you reduce your risk of many chronic diseases like hypertension, diabetes and heart disease, she said.

When setting goals, its important to be realistic and not set them too out of reach in the beginning. Smaller goals can help people stick to their plans, she said.

I recommend starting with small steps, but at the same time celebrate milestones along the way. This strategy is proven to be successful, yet simple, as it focuses on small, practical changes that add up to a healthy lifestyle over time, she said.

Hess said regular physical activity is essential for good health. Incorporating it into a new routine early can aid in weight loss, and in the future, can help keep it off.

Regular physical activity is an essential part of this wellness journey, and, yes, it can aid with weight loss and more specifically help maintain weight loss but the benefits of physical activity go way beyond the waist line. Specifically, regular physical activity helps elevate your mood and has shown to be an effective treatment or add-on treatment for anxiety and depression. It also plays a role in healthy sleep patterns. Finally, it gives our immune system a natural boost, which is so essential during the COVID-19 pandemic, she said.

For adults, Hess said its recommended they get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise a week, like fast walking, casual biking or light yard work, or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity a week, like jogging or swimming. Adults should also add two days of resistance training to their routine, as well as explore activities that improve flexibility, she said.

To get in those minutes, North Central West Virginia is home to several area gyms and facilities for people to pursue their resolutions, such as the Harrison County YMCA, which aside from the exercise equipment, offers several classes to keep members engaged and healthy.

Healthy eating habits, Hess said, are another important aspect when losing weight.

Most of us have developed habits of how, when and why we eat. When we want to make changes in our diet and nutrition, I think its very important to also reflect on our attitudes toward food and our relationship with food. How, when and why we eat can often have deep-seated emotional triggers and if these issues are not addressed, it can be difficult to make lasting changes to how we see and use food to nourish ourselves. A lot of patients often want to adopt a radical change or a so-called fad diet and hope to see rapid changes in weight.

Weight loss management experts often dont recommend just one way of eating or prescribed diet plan. Its important that all the nutrients and micronutrients our body requires are included or supplemented in our eating pattern, but for a starting point, I would suggest starting with a mindfulness-based eating program, she said.

Mindful eating is about using mindfulness or our full attention to learn to recognize the difference between true hunger and non-hunger triggers and to really pay attention to our experience of eating, she said.

Mindful eating involves eating slowly without distraction, learning to distinguish between true hunger or emotional or habit-eating cues and only eating until full, she said.

It also stresses engaging all the senses in the act of eating and noticing how food affects your feelings. It makes eating intentional and not automatic. This mindful act of eating will lend to any nutrition program you adopt for weight management but most importantly it will build a healthy relationship and appreciation for the food you eat, she said.

Permanently improving eating habits requires a person to reflect on their habits, replacing unhealthy habits on healthier ones and reinforcing those habits.

For those trying to improve their overall wallet health, Edward Jones financial adviser Larry Cann offered several pointers.

Sit down and create a budget, and more importantly follow it. For most folks, actually seeing, paying attention to what they are spending on a more regular basis often times helps curve some of that frivolous spending, he said.

With 2020 being a trying year for everyone, filled with job losses, cut hours and parents teaching children at home while working on their own careers, Cann said being prepared is an important focus heading into the new year.

As part of that budget, work towards having an emergency fund. Id define an emergency fund as having somewhere in the neighborhood of approximately six months worth of living expenses. That gives you that cushion for the unexpected, including the loss of a job, cutting of hours, losing overtime pay, (etc.). Having that emergency fund gives you a cushion and time to react when something bad does happen, he said.

For those paying down debt, Cann said putting focus on paying the highest interest debts is impactful, and for folks who have already started planning financially in any way, remember to establish goals, create a plan to follow and dont overreact.

For those curious, unsure or even frightened about finances, seeking the help of a financial adviser can be very beneficial, as they can help you create a plan, lay out the goals an individual would like to accomplish and help achieve them.

You dont have to have a million dollars to talk to us. Thats simply not the case. ... If you are in a position where you are confused, worried and not quite sure, if you have a goal and you dont have a plan in place to help achieve that goal, reach out to somebody. Let somebody help you create that plan, he said.

The health effects of too much gaming – Harvard Health Blog – Harvard Health

It is estimated that 164 million Americans half of our population play video games, also known as gaming. Contrary to popular belief, it isnt just teens who play games. According to a recent survey, only 21% of gamers were under 18 years old. While gaming can be a fun distraction or hobby (and is even becoming a competitive sport on many college campuses), there are health risks that come from too much gaming. What are these harms, and what can be done about them?

Before discussing the harms of gaming, it is only fair to mention the benefits. Aside from being entertaining and a fun pastime, gaming can provide a way for people to interact with each other a virtual community as they work together toward completing common tasks. Our society suffers from an epidemic of loneliness, and gaming can be a vehicle to connect with others, including otherwise difficult-to-connect-with people in your life, such as kids, grandkids, or (Ive seen this be quite helpful) with autistic children, who can have challenges with traditional modes of communication.

There is mixed research that there are some cognitive benefits to gaming, such as better control of ones attention and improved spatial reasoning, though it isnt entirely clear how much these benefits extend outside of the video game sphere into the real world. Finally, video games have medical applications, such as training people with degenerative diseases to improve their balance, helping adolescents with ADHD improve their thinking skills, or training surgeons on how to do technically complicated operations.

Repetitive stress injuries, or overuse injuries, are injuries that come from activities that involve repeated use of muscles and tendons, to the point that pain and inflammation develop. If these injuries are allowed to progress, numbness and weakness can develop, and permanent injury can result. Overuse injuries of the hands and arms are rampant among gamers.

One common example is carpel tunnel syndrome, which many gamers develop. Carpal tunnel syndrome, often seen in office workers, involves inflammation of a nerve in the wrist, which causes pain and numbness.

Gamers thumb, which was previously called PlayStation thumb (or nintendinitis or nintendonitis when Nintendo was popular), occurs when the tendons that move the thumb become inflamed. The medical term for this is de Quervains tenosynovitis, and it can lead to swelling and limited movement. Gamers are also at risk for trigger finger, or stenosing tenosynovitis, which is when a finger gets stuck in the bent position due to chronic inflammation. Gamers can also get tennis elbow, a painful inflammation of the place where the tendon inserts into the bone on the outside of the elbow.

Gaming is also associated with obesity in teens and, plausibly, the same would be shown in adults, if studied. This is due to the obvious phenomenon that if a teen is sitting in front of a screen for hours every day, he or she isnt getting much exercise. The obesity is also thought to be due to increased food intake while playing video games. According to a study in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition, a single session of video game play in healthy male adolescents is associated with an increased food intake, regardless of appetite sensations. The proposed mechanisms are that either the signals that indicate satiety (fullness) get impaired, or that the mental stress involved with playing video games activates the reward centers, which leads to increased food intake.

Vision problems are common complaints of gamers. The most common vision problem is eye strain, which can lead to headaches and poor concentration. Gaming has been reported to result in seizures, leading to warnings on the packaging.

Gaming has also been associated with psychological problems. It is still an open question whether video game addiction, or internet gaming disorder (IGD), is a unique syndrome. According to the American Psychological Association, IGD is defined as experiencing at least five of the following nine criteria over a 12-month period:

According to one study from the American Journal of Psychiatry, between 0.3% and 1.0% of Americans might have an internet gaming disorder. Treatments for this problem are a work in progress, as the disorder isnt fully understood or agreed upon, but can include public health approaches such as education and harm reduction, stricter labeling on the packaging, as well as cognitive behavioral therapy. There are even support groups, such as Computer Gaming Addicts Anonymous, which leverage the power of group support also helpful in the treatment of other addictions to the realm of gaming addiction.

Gaming has also been associated with sleep deprivation, insomnia and circadian rhythm disorders, depression, aggression, and anxiety, though more studies are needed to establish the validity and the strength of these connections. There has also been concern that exposure to the extreme violence that is commonly found in video games can desensitize teens and young adults to such violence, causing emotional problems and even leading to young people committing acts of violence.

As with many other activities that have potential benefits and harms, moderation is the key. Most of the harms that come from gaming can be improved, if not avoided altogether, by limiting the number of hours spent in front of the screen, and by engaging in healthy activities like exercising, or socializing in the real world instead of the virtual game world.

Education is an essential key to injury prevention. Gamers need to be educated on how to protect their thumbs, wrists, and elbows, their waistlines, their emotional state, their sleep, and their eyes. Simple education around taking breaks, stretching, eating healthy snacks, and resting and icing your thumb, wrist, or elbow when it starts hurting can address injuries early, before they become significant. For the eyes, gamers can try the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, try to look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

In short, playing video games can be fun and a social activity when integrated into a healthy lifestyle that includes plenty of sleep, exercise, and good nutrition, rather than letting the game become your life.

How to boost your immune system in weeks and maintain it long-term – Insider – INSIDER

When it's working properly, your immune system is an internal defense against harmful germs and infections. However, building a strong immune system doesn't happen overnight.

In fact, strengthening your immune system can take weeks, according to Tulip Jhaveri, MD, a medical microbiology fellow at Brigham and Women's Hospital who specializes in infectious diseases.

Therefore, a shot of lemon-ginger juice isn't going to protect you from an infectious disease if you already have a weakened immune system. To boost your immune system quickly, you'll need to plan ahead and consistently follow some general guidelines for at least several weeks.

If you have a weakened immune system, you will not be able to make a reasonable change in 24 hours.

The immune system is a complex system that requires many different working parts. Because of that, "there is no quick way to improve it," says Jhaveri.

That said, if you're looking for the fastest way to give your immune system the best chance of preventing infection, Jhaveri says that drinking plenty of water and getting enough sleep are critical.

But it's important to note that, "it typically takes weeks of regular intervention to have any impact," Jhaveri says.

If you anticipate being in a situation where you may be exposed to a lot of germs like if you're taking a flight soon and want to take measures to protect yourself, here are five ways to boost your immunity:

"Drinking plenty of water before a flight is important because the higher the altitude, the more the humidity drops, causing considerable loss of fluid," says Jhaveri.

To function properly, your immune system relies heavily on the nutrients in your bloodstream, which mostly consists of water. Without water, the cells and tissues of your immune system don't receive the nutrients they need. Your immune system also relies on water to flush out germs and waste materials.

The amount of water you need can vary; however you should aim to drink fluids regularly over the course of the day.

"Sleep is also very important as it enables the body to repair itself and get ready for the next day," says Jhaveri.

According to a 2017 study, sleep deprivation makes your body vulnerable to a lot of infectious agents. You should aim to get seven to eight hours of sound sleep a night to help boost immunity.

If you're about to take a trip, Jhaveri recommends avoiding caffeine right before and during your flight because it can dehydrate and disrupt your sleep schedule.

Exercising may help flush germs out of your lungs and airways, reducing your chances of getting sick. It also stimulates your immune system and fights stress hormones that can make you ill.

If you can, try and do some moderate or vigorous exercise for 60 minutes several days a week for several weeks. You can opt for a brisk walk or a bicycle ride around your neighborhood.

Both vitamin C and zinc improve your defenses against pathogens and are critical for your immunity.

Deficiencies of these two nutrients are associated with more frequent and more severe cases of several illnesses, including malaria, diarrhea, the common cold, pneumonia, and other respiratory tract infections.

You can consult your doctor on whether you require these supplements and what dose is appropriate for you.

Chicken soup made with a bone broth may help clear your respiratory passageways and reduce inflammation, plus it's a pretty good source of protein, according to Harvard Medical School.

Though bone broth is a bit of a trend and evidence hasn't conclusively pointed to its benefits, protein is a critical nutrient for immunity since it is essential for the functioning of your T-cells, which are a type of white blood cell that play a major role in your immune response.

To maintain a strong immune system long-term, it's important to lead a healthy lifestyle. Jhaveri recommends the following:

Like the other systems in your body, your immune system is a complex network of processes that works best when you provide it sufficient energy and nutrition to function.

While several products claim to boost your immunity quickly, the most effective strategy is to consistently maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, reducing stress, and avoiding alcohol and smoking.

In fact, according to Jhaveri, "even multivitamins and multiminerals have minimal to no benefit in boosting immunity as was once believed they're supplements, not substitutes to a well-balanced diet."The best way to boost your immunity before a plane ride, or any other high-risk situation, is to get started on those healthy habits hydration, nutrition, sleep, and exercise are your best bet.

And above all, maintain good hygiene: You can follow these guidelines by the CDC to protect yourself and others from infection:

Cognetics EXCEL Nootropic for Enhanced Focus, Increased Productivity, Improved Memory and Healthy Brain Function Coming to America – GlobeNewswire

Cognetics Group will bring its smart supplement, EXCEL, the latest in nootropic formulations, to America next year to help combat the looming mental health epidemic in the U.S.

Cognetics EXCELs formula includes nine powerful and effective natural ingredients, such as Lions Mane, Choline Bitartrate, N-Acetyl Carnitine, Tyrosine, Theanine, Bacopa Monnieri, Ginkgo Biloba Extract, Huperzine A, and Rhodiola Rosea.

PALM BEACH, FL, Dec. 23, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Cognetics Group will bring its smart supplement, EXCEL, the latest in nootropic formulations, to America next year to help combat the looming mental health epidemicin the U.S.

The timing could not be better since 9 out of 10 Americans now consider mental wellbeing as important as physical health. Americans concern for their mental wellness is not surprising, with 26 percent of American adults experiencing mental health issues in any given year.

Mental health is now discussed openly, said Matthew Denneny, managing director and founder of Cognetics Group based in London. There is no longer a stigma attached to mental disorders. People realize mental health conditions are the same as heart problems or cancer.

Denneny said consumers are searching for ways to improve their cognitive ability.

We developed Cognetics EXCEL, a multi-faceted nootropic, to improve mental acuity, Denneny said. Cognetics EXCEL helps people who experience a lack of focus, brain fog, poor memory, decreased productivity and motivation.

Denneny said Cognetics EXCEL is food for the brain and nutrition for the mind.

Cognetics EXCELs formula includes nine powerful and effective natural ingredients, such as Lions Mane, Choline Bitartrate, N-Acetyl Carnitine, Tyrosine, Theanine, Bacopa Monnieri, Ginkgo Biloba Extract, Huperzine A, and Rhodiola Rosea.

We list all of our ingredients on our label because we believe in transparency in contrast to many competitors who hide behind proprietary blends, he said.

Denneny understands his supplement is part of an overall healthy lifestyle, including getting plenty of sleep, eating a healthy diet, and exercising.

Sleep is important for optimum brain function. Eating brain-boosting food, such as salmon, is also important, as is exercising, which increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain, Denneny said, adding that meditation, yoga and drinking water also helps keep the brain healthy.

Denneny understands the challenges his consumers confront every day.

How a Software Map of the Entire Planet Could Change the World Forever, reports Aaron Frank for the Oxford Business Review. Why 3D map data is the technology infrastructure for the 21st Century 3D maps like these are essentially software copies of the real world. They will be crucial to the development of a wide range of emerging technologies including autonomous driving, drone delivery, robotics, and a fast-approaching future filled with augmented reality.

The shadowy spirits that helped advance science A demon was present at the birth of science.. Ren Descartes conjured an evil genius when devising his I think, therefore I am statement about the nature of reality and the self. Other scientific demons would follow over the centuries, reports Jess Keiser for The Washington Post. Wild Things Space Invaders Season 2: The Search for Extraterrestrial Life (Best Space Podcast of 2020) Whats the likelihood that, as were looking out into space, something else might be looking back at us? asks Host Laura Krantz. in recent years, armed with state-of-the-art technology and better information, the search for extraterrestrials overflows with exciting possibilities. Within our own solar system, astrobiologists search for the biochemical building blocks that might sustain microbes. Astronomers discover far-flung stars, orbited by planets that could be teeming with life. And astrophysicists point sophisticated (and expensive) telescopes toward the deep reaches of the universe, looking for anything out of the ordinary.

Melting permafrost has revealed everything from Scythian graves to unbelievably intact Ice Age megafauna, but something else that has been lurking under frozen ground that was never supposed to melt. New research has now found that zombie greenhouse gases could seep through melting Arctic permafrost because of human activity that is causing it to melt and the organic matter in it to decompose. The Secret to a Long, Healthy Life Is in the Genes of the Oldest Humans Alive, reports Shelly Fan for Singularity Hub. If evolution was a scientist, then centenarians, and the rest of us, are two experimental groups in action. Nature has already given us a genetic blueprint for healthy longevity. The Worlds Space Agencies Are on a Quest to Deflect a (Harmless) Asteroid, reports Jason Dorrier for Singularity Hub. While the last killer space rock dropped out of the sky with no warning, we have a few tools the dinosaurs didnt. In addition to telescopes to chart potentially hazardous asteroids, we can visit and, theoretically, divert an asteroids course before it reaches us. Now, the worlds space agencies are teaming up to take planetary defense beyond theory.

A hair replacement or a non-surgical hair transplant is a technique of attaching a hair replacement system to the scalp. This hair system is made of 100% natural human hair and is customized to precisely match the density and colour of your hair. This hair system is then attached on your head and blended into your existing hair after a haircut. The entire process takes about 3-4 hours and it will get you looking young and fabulous as ever.

The Lifespan of the Hair Systems:

Since each system is made using only natural human hair, their lifespan is about 6-12 months. Although this could vary according to the kind of system and the way you maintain it. Timely servicing plays a crucial role in increasing its longevity. A well-maintained system tends to last for a longer duration. Maintenance interval depends on a lot of factors namely: the type of hair system, your skin type, and the climatic conditions. The average time to service them is once in every 15 to 30 days.
