Doctors at the University of Rome found that 28% of men with an average age of 33 who had COVID-19 said they were experiencing erectile dysfunction.

According to the Daily Mail, only 9 of the 100 men surveyed who did not have COVID-19 reported problems with sexual function. The researchers said that ED likely occurs because of inflammation caused by the virus that narrows the blood vessels leading to the genitals. This obstructs the blood flow and hinders sexual response.

Another reason why men experience ED from COVID-19 is that the virus responsible for the illness binds to ACE2 receptors in the body. That is how it gains entry to our cells.

One of the devious ways the virus gets into the body is by its spike protein binding to a receptor found at quite high concentrations not only in the lungs but also in the reproductive organs,said Dr. Channa Jayasena, a consultant in reproductive endocrinology and andrology at Hammersmith and St. Marys hospitals in London. When COVID-19 binds to these receptors, they can no longer perform in their normal function.

According to the Daily Mail, ACE2 receptors are found abundantly in the testes. Dr. Jayasena suggested that COVID-19 may also lower the testosterone levels in men who become infected. While this can present sexual issues, lower T levels also affects overall general health.

Last November, researchers at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine said that some men with COVID-19 sufferedfrom impaired spermatogenesis,or the production of sperm, which could result in lower sperm count, according to a study they published in the World Journal of Mens Health.

According to the New York Post, the scientists examined tissue from the autopsies of 6 men who died from the COVID-19 infection and found the virus was still in their testicles. Further research found that men who had COVID-19 and went on to test negative for the virus, still had the pathogen in their testes. According to the National Library of Medicine, Chinese researchers published a study that had similar findings.

So, the patient tested negative and was asymptomatic after having COVID-19 but still showed the presence of the virus inside the testes. The finding is novel, remarkable, and certainly worthy of further exploration,said Dr. Dr. Ranjith Ramasamy, a urologist and one of the authors of the study, according to the Post. Im fairly certain, just like mumps, about 20 to 30% of men are going to have some sort of affected fertility in their future.

Another study published in The Aging Male found that men with lower testosterone levels could be at higher risk of contracting COVID-19 and that the virus itself could cause lower T levels. Mike Kirby, a former professor at the University of Hertfordshire in the U.K., and the editor of The Aging Male, said that doctors should test the testosterone levels of their male patients with COVID-19 and supplement if needed.

Kirby said that low T levels are associated with increased cardiovascular risks, type 2 diabetes, muscular weakness and depression, loss of sexual desire and fertility, according to the Daily Mail.

Dr. Jayasena suggested that the lower sex hormone levels may be temporary.

If you had severe flu, then it might take at least another several weeks for your testes to start working properly,he said, according to the Daily Mail. A mans sperm count can drop to zero during flu and it can take three months to recover fully. So I think its reasonable to suggest a similarly severe illness such as COVID-19 would do at least that.

"It's a huge sense of accomplishment. And it's not just athletes. I can't even tell you how good it feels to just help someone accomplish whatever goal it is. Just being able to get dressed in the morning to get to work," said Embley.

When you walk in the door to your appointment, a physical therapist can help you identify where the pain is coming from and what other muscles and body parts may be contributing to pain.

According to Embly, physical therapists try to begin the healing process by reducing inflammation, increasing range of motion and improving posture, among other actions. While a patient's instinct may be to take it easy when they experience pain, recovery lays in the balance of activity and rest.

"Oftentimes we think of this as, 'I don't want to do too much. I don't want to aggravate my pain.' Sometimes actually doing too little can be just as detrimental," said Embly.

From diagnosis to recovery, Embly said that engaging patients with manual therapy and a hands-on approach can help them reach their goals.

Last month marked the one-year anniversary of Gov. Gavin Newsoms first stay-at-home order to try to thwart the coronavirus as it took hold in California.

As I look back over the past year I realize that, while there has been a strong focus on mask wearing, social distancing and getting vaccinated, we have not received any information or health education on how to stay healthy and fit.

Perhaps this would be understandable at the beginning of the pandemic, since we did not know how lifestyle-based approaches would affect outcomes for this pathogen. However, now there is plenty of research to support the premise that exercise, real food and a healthy lifestyle are critically important in reducing our susceptibility.

Just last month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a study that found almost 80 percent of those who died from COVID-19 were overweight or obese. And according to the latest statistics, 42 percent of the U.S. population is considered obese!

For decades, health-care professionals have cautioned people about the dangers of obesity. But those warnings have been largely ignored.

There could not be a better time than right now for public health to step up and educate the masses on what a healthy lifestyle looks like. COVID-19 is a much needed wakeup call for an overweight and out-of-shape America!

Everyone knows that exercise promotes good health. Countless studies have shown that people who work out are less likely than sedentary people to develop numerous health problems, including obesity, diabetes and hypertension, the most prevalent comorbiditiesassociated with COVID-19.

One of the greatest benefits of exercise is how it affects metabolism. Metabolism is the set of cellular mechanisms that generate energy from the food we eat and the oxygen we breathe in order to power every cell in the body, including the immune system. When these energy-producing pathways are running smoothly we have optimal metabolic health.

Beyond exercise, the Paleo diet has been shown to be effective in providing long-term weight loss, reductions in blood pressure and even reversal of type-2 diabetes.

National Doctors Day is Tuesday, March 30. Its traditionally a time when those within the health care community will recognize the physicians on their team. However, the holiday isnt largely celebrated outside of hospitals, clinics and medical offices.

After the past year, though, the entire nation the world, for that matter should honor those who keep us healthy and living longer.

Doctors sacrifice a large part of their 20s for college, medical school and their residencies. They often go deep into debt to pay for their training. They work long hours and weekends, understanding there is no such thing as being off duty. The field of medicine is constantly evolving, so doctors must continuously study new research, innovations and trends.

Throughout the pandemic, its been encouraging to see the community praise all health care workers. Doctors and nurses certainly deserve credit, along with physician assistants, paramedics, nursing assistants, radiology techs, billing clerks and others. The medical community works together to ensure our entire community is healthy and safe.

All doctors appreciate a simple thank you from patients, but praise isnt the goal. They want their patients to be healthy. In honor of National Doctors Day, I would love to see everyone make these three commitments going forward:

Follow-up: Many individuals see a doctor if theyre in pain or sick. Patients may need to undergo surgery, take prescription medication or see a physical therapist. When theyre done with the required treatment, though, few patients reconnect with their doctors. We assume youre OK, but never know for sure. Its important to know that your condition has improved, but we also use that information to help guide our recommendations for future patients.

Keep annual visits: Health insurance companies cover annual visits to primary care physicians and dentists because early detection and prevention are keys to good health. Its also important to visit an OBGYN or urologist, dermatologist, optometrist, otolaryngologist and physical therapist at least once a year. Just because you feel fine doesnt mean you have a clean bill of health. Our bodies are like vehicles we run through potholes, over speedbumps and constantly speed up and slow down. After a while, it begins to take a toll. A good mechanic, or doctor, can diagnose issues under the hood.

Treat yourself right: Continuing with the vehicle analogy, its hard to drive a million miles without getting some dents and scratches. We also cant expect to go through life without getting a few dings on our bodies. Its important to prioritize physical fitness, which includes strength and endurance exercises. Its equally important to eat healthy foods like vegetables, lean meats and fruits, and avoid junk food and saturated fats. A third component is a healthy lifestyle, which includes getting ample sleep, not smoking and managing stress levels.

In a bid to increase the knowledge of healthy living among Nigerians, Founder and Project Director, Regalo Hope Foundation, Chinenye Onuorah is planning a health talk in commemoration of the World Health billed to take place on April 7.

Onuorah who said the event will be held at Abaranje Ikotun, Lagos, noted that many people do not know that there is a direct relationship between what they eat and how they live. She also noted that people need to know the importance of regular monitoring of blood pressure and sugar level.

Addressing the press in Lagos, she said that the health talk will afford Nigerians the opportunity to know more about what the need to do to improve their health and general wellbeing.

The health talk is also put in place to educate participants about negative habits that endanger sound health and longevity.

With the youths forming about 45 percent of our population we need to work harder to educate our people especially the youths and aged, she said.

The NGO will also give out gifts like mosquito nets, clothes, food and free haircut. There will also be, on the same day and same venue, free glucose check, blood pressure test and free weight check, all of which will be carried out by registered nurses who are members of the NGO.

About 500 persons have been invited to come and enjoy the free medical tests which will cost about 2.5 million naira to be paid by the NGO and its sponsors at home and abroad.

Last year, the NGO held free health talk and free medical in three local government areas in Lagos State. About 1,500 people participated and it cost the NGO about 4.5 mill naira.

Regalo plans to use this years World Health Day to outline its future plans and call on potential sponsors to support its laudable objectives. Side attractions of the day include drama, music presentation and indoor games.

Regalo Hope Foundation was registered in 2017 and since inception, it has carried out over 250 projects in 327 communities in Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Cross River, Imo and Anambra States.

We continue to increase our cognizance and recognition of the importance of healthy living (HL) behaviors and HL medicine (HLM) to prevent and treat chronic disease. The continually unfolding events precipitated by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic have further highlighted the importance of HL behaviors, as indicated by the characteristics of those who have been hospitalized and died from this viral infection. There has already been recognition that leading a healthy lifestyle, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, may have a substantial protective effect in those who become infected with the virus. Now more than ever, HL behaviors and HLM are essential and must be promoted with a renewed vigor across the globe. In response to the rapidly evolving world since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the clear need to change lifestyle behaviors to promote human resilience and quality of life, the HL for Pandemic Event Protection (HL-PIVOT) network was established. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused disruptions in our daily routines. In order to keep ourselves and our community safe, we attend virtual classes, and sit in front of a screen for hours on end. Our social and physical activities have decreased, which can have an effect on our physical and mental health.

As a result of the pandemic, communities that used to be stronger than glue have slowly begun to lose that bond.

Despite the challenges we have faced, the Raritan Valley YMCA in East Brunswick is working harder than ever to keep the health of the community flourishing, healthy and happy.

This spring, the YMCA looks forward to the return of some of its signature in-person events, such as the Spin-a-thon on April 10 and Healthy Kids Day on April 24, both at the YMCA facility on Tices Lane in East Brunswick.

Our work has never changed, said Executive Director Gina Stravic. We are for healthy living, social responsibility and youth development in our community. Weve brought back our programs safely or connected with people virtually. Weve distributed food to those who need it. Weve had to do things differently, but we are looking forward to getting back to what weve done best in the past.

For example, the 8th annual Spin-A-Thon will be taking place on April 10. An outdoor event for COVID safety, participants can ride in spin class or take Zumba class to support the YMCAs summer camp scholarships, drowning prevention efforts, food pantry and more, all while supporting the health of the participants.

The 5 Foods That Cut Your Odds for Colon Cancer – HealthDay News

SATURDAY, April 3, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- When it comes to guarding against colon cancer, what you eat is everything.

You can reduce your risk of colon cancer by eating five food types, an expert says. These include: vegetables; whole grains; legumes; nuts and seeds; and fiber-rich fruit.

"Vegetables contain cancer-preventing nutrients called carotenoids and flavonoids," said Amy Rosenfeld, program coordinator of community health, education and outreach and a registered dietitian at the Center for Healthy Living at Northern Westchester Hospital, in Mount Kisco, N.Y.

"Vegetables are high in fiber, bulking your stool and limiting the amount of time waste spends in your colon, reducing your risk for colorectal cancers," she added.

At every meal, you should try to cover half your plate with colorful vegetables, and that can include frozen vegetables, which are affordable and ready-to-eat, Rosenfeld said.

Whole grain foods have high levels of fiber. When shopping for bread and cereal products, select those that list whole grain ingredients first.

"Try replacing white grains -- like white rice -- with whole grains or mixing the two together. Eating three servings, or about three ounces of whole grains a day, will not only increase fiber, but also B vitamins and important minerals, such as iron, zinc, copper and magnesium," Rosenfeld said.

Examples of whole grain products include whole wheat bread, barley, oats, quinoa, buckwheat, corn, brown rice and wild rice.

Legumes have lots of fiber and help keep your digestive tract healthy. "By regularly eating beans and lentils, you lower your risk for cancerous colon polyps (small growths)," Rosenfeld said. "Try substituting beans or lentils for meat twice a week or reducing meat in your recipes and add in legumes."

Put navy beans, chickpeas, fava beans, kidney beans, lentils, lima beans, black beans and cannellini beans on your grocery list, she suggested.

"Eat the rainbow when it comes to fruits," Rosenfeld recommended. "Try to eat one to two cups of fruit each day and mix up the colors. Fruit also has fiber, vitamins and minerals, and its natural sweetness helps you resist refined sugary treats without nutritional benefits."

A Year of COVID in Bucks

Heart disease refers to a grouping of several different conditions. It is defined as a type of disease that affects the heart or surrounding blood vessels. It can describe a range of conditions from blood vessel disease to heart rhythm problems to heart infection.

I was curious as to how heart disease could affect teenagers and what we as a youth should be doing to look out for our own health. I interviewed my friend and neighbor, Dr. Michael Mooradd, whois a cardiologist.

I wanted to know the significance of heart disease on my age group and what signs myself and peers should be looking out for. I wondered what could be preventative and what symptoms to look out for.

Mooradd explained that the main advice that he shares is, Be aware of your family history, live a healthy lifestyle, no smoking, and encourage your family as well to follow a healthy lifestyle and seek treatment if they have any symptoms.

I was naively under the impression that my age group could not be affected by heart disease, which I believed only afflicted the elderly.

Mooradd shared that one of the biggest tragedies of heart disease is when people are afraid to seek medical assistance after they start to notice the symptoms and they do not seek the help that they need.

The symptoms include, but are not limited to, chest pain, left arm pain, throat pain, and jaw pain. Men and women exude different symptoms and sometimes women experience a shortness of breath.

The symptoms differ from person to person, but most experience these symptoms.

If you or anyone in your family have these symptoms you should consult a doctor for an evaluation.

There is also a genetic component to heart disease, so understanding your family history can help to inform if you should be more cautious in looking out for the signs and symptoms.

If people know that they have a family history they should focus on exercise, a healthy diet, and no smoking. People aged 50 and up are at a higher risk of heart disease.

Prevention can be a key component in helping to prevent heart disease in ones future. Mooradd explained that preventative measures can be taking such as practicinga healthy diet, regularly exercising, and controlling your blood pressure if you have hypertension. There are also preventative medications that can be taken, such as medication that helps to lower the bodys level of cholesterol.

Long term, heart disease needs to be caught early, and if it is caught early there is no damage or minimal damage. Mooradd said doctors try to educate the community that the first goal is prevention. Even if they do not catch it early on, it can still be treated.

Teens and other adolescents my age are not at high risk for heart disease, but they still need to look out for symptoms and track their family history.

Help encourage both you and your parents to practice living a healthy lifestyle and getting the exercise that you need.

Prevention and recognizing the symptoms and knowing when to consult a doctor are they key to living a healthy life and avoiding heart disease.

Some nurses at the Psychiatric Department of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital have urged the public to consider making lifestyle changes that could prevent bipolar disorders.

They said avoiding alcohol, drug abuse, and thirty minutes of daily exercise amidst healthy eating were key to minimize the risk factors for the condition.

The nurses told the Ghana News Agency, that scientists were yet to know the exact cause of the condition as the world marked World Bipolar Day under the theme "Strength for Today, Hope for Tomorrow".

Usually, people with the condition have mood swings and may also suffer depression.

Ms Nelly Mensah, one of the nurses said the condition could disrupt a persons life significantly, as it hampers day-to-day activities, adding that, not just the one who suffers the illness, but bipolar condition could also affect mentally those who take care of people with the disorder.

Because stress and loss of loved ones can be triggers for bipolar disorder, dealing with the serious issues in your life can decrease your chances of immediate onset. A counsellor can help you gain perspective and insight, learn coping skills, and practice healthier patterns of thought and behavior, she said.

Mr. Yusif Mustapha another nurse, stressed the need to raise awareness among the people about what bipolar condition constitute and preventive measures.

He explained that World Bipolar Day is marked each year to make people understand the implications of this mental health issue and raise awareness about proper guidance and treatment.

For her part, Madam Gertrude Nkrumah mentioned depression as a major form of bipolar disorders and described it as feelings of sadness, loss, or anger that interfered with a persons everyday activity.

She indicated that a family history of depression or any mood disorder, early childhood trauma and certain medical conditions may put one at a higher risk.

The MRC is a group of dedicated volunteers, who donate their time and talents to prepare for and respond to public health emergencies and promote healthy living throughout the year. MRC volunteers supplement existing emergency and public health resources.

Jeff Scheulen has volunteered with the MRC since April 2020. He began helping with testing, then moved on to help with the vaccination clinics. Jeff said, Im retired, and when I heard about MRC, which I never heard of before COVID, I realized there was a path for me to help out and support the community. My past career as a paramedic, thats what I did. I helped people.

Anyone can join the MRC; no medical experience is needed. Volunteers receive free training and participate in drills and exercises to prepare for emergencies. Volunteers must be over 18 and pass a criminal background check.

Developing bioenergetic nanocatalysts to treat neurodegeneration – Drug Target Review

Mark Mortenson, CSO of Clene Nanomedicine, discusses the use of proprietary gold nanocrystals as catalysts to prevent the progression of, and act as a treatment for, neurodegenerative disease.

In this article, Drug Target Reviews Hannah Balfour discusses the discovery and development of bioenergetic nanocatalysts a new class of drugs for neurodegenerative diseases with Mark Mortenson, Chief Science Officer at Clene Nanomedicine. His company is using an interdisciplinary approach to develop a drinkable, oral suspension of metallic gold nanocrystals to treat a range of neurodegenerative disorders including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinsons and multiple sclerosis (MS). Their lead candidate, CNM-Au8, is currently in Phase II trials in patients with MS and Parkinsons and in Phase II and III trials for the prevention of ALS disease progression.

Mortenson explained that a bioenergetic nanocatalyst is a minute metallic particle in the case of CNM-Au8, made of gold with numerous electrons on its surface that are available for reactions. Depending on the environment, the nanoparticle can either take in excess electrons from its surroundings or give out electrons (referred to as surface plasmons by physicists like Mortenson) oxidising or reducing the local environment in the process to aid cellular processes and reactions.

It is well established that in neurodegenerative diseases, cellular energy production is disrupted. This has been linked to disturbances in glycolytic reactions and mitochondrial dysfunction. In both processes, electron involvement (eg, transfer) is highly important. Mortenson explained that, as a result, Clene scientists theorised that their gold nanocrystals could interact with the brain to provide electrons to facilitate these reactions.

Mortenson revealed: Each of our highly-faceted nanocrystals can exchange millions of electrons on their surface. When someone drinks two ounces (approximately 60ml) of CNM-Au8 they take in over a quadrillion gold nanocrystals, which then travel from their stomach, through the bloodstream and some reach the brain. Each of those gold nanocrystals can act as an electron bank for redox reactions, sharing, as needed, millions of electrons at a rate of, for example, 4,000 a second.

In vitro and in vivo we have shown that these nanocrystals enhance both mitochondrial function and glycolytic reactions. Bioenergetics means we are helping naturally occurring reactions at the cellular and intracellular level that are stressed for some reason, to work better. While they cannot replace the neurons that are already lost, they improve the function of what is left behind.

He explained that their R&D work first started in the energy field of nanotechnology, rather than nanomedicine or the use of nanotech for health. However, as they studied nanocatalysis in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells and hydrolysis reactions, they hypothesised that some of their discoveries especially the ability to make clean-surfaced metallic nanocrystals that are highly-faceted and may act as catalysts for reactions also related to biology.

one of the most remarkable aspects of using catalysts, rather than a pharmacological agent, is that they stop working once an equilibrium is reached. Therefore, it is highly unlikely the drug will over- or under-activate a pathway to the point that it becomes dangerous

Mortenson commented: Gold nanoparticles predate our concept of working with them; however, our two Eureka moments were we saw data on the slowed surface flow of electrons on a nanocrystal surface when polluted with a molecular surface residue and when a publication came out in 2010, stating that while 200 plus articles published to date had reported on various toxicities of gold nanoparticles to date, with results all over the map, not a single one had taken into account the method of making the nanoparticles.

What we had discovered by this point, while working on these hydrolysis and fuel cell reactions, was that different manufacturing processes or matricies (what the gold nanocrystals grow on) result in residual particles sticking to the surfaces of the gold nanoparticles. No one had understood that the toxicity was not the gold itself, per se, but rather the residual surface chemistry that was unintentionally or intentionally put there. In some cases, people were very proud of the stability of their gold nanoparticles after they coated them with polyethylene glycol, essentially anti-freeze for your car, but failed to take into account what toxicity that was introducing in biological interactions.

Using the methods we identified initially in our energy studies, we now make highly-faceted, therapeutic, clean-surfaced nanocrystals designed to have a particular interactions with biological targets. The clean surface is the most important thing, because it eliminates toxicity. If the surface is not clean then you will only learn how toxic a nanoparticle is once you go through all the pre-clinical and clinical drug development programmes (in vitro, in vivo, etc) and the efficacy of the nanocrystals also could change dramatically if the surfaces are not clean.

Mortenson revealed: Some of our most exciting results are from Phase II, brain biomarker, proof-of-target effect trials being conducted at the University of Texas, US, called Repair-MS and Repair-PD. In these trials, all participants are receiving CNM-Au8, just at different concentrations. What we are looking at is whether the treatment changes the energy metabolism patterns on the patients magnetic resonance spectroscopy images.

But rather than looking at how protons are stimulated within the magnetic field, we are performing 31P (31-Phosphorous Magnetic Resonance Imaging) spectroscopy and looking at changes in amounts of phosphorus compounds, such as NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide), NADH, PCR, PME, phosphocholine and phosphocreatines. Each patient acts as their own baseline and what we are assessing is, after being on the drug for X number of weeks, is there a change? While the trials have been disrupted by COVID-19, the interim data is fascinating. We are seeing an absolute change in the values of these phosphorus components. What is really exciting is that CNM-Au8 is acting exactly as a catalyst would ie, in those individuals that maybe had too much of certain compounds, they now have less, while those that had too little now have more. Thus far, we have reported data through at least 12 weeks.

In addition, we are seeing this regardless of whether they are Parkinsons or MS patients.

He added that one of the most remarkable aspects of using catalysts, rather than a pharmacological agent, is that they stop working once an equilibrium is reached. Therefore, it is highly unlikely the drug will over- or under-activate a pathway to the point that it becomes dangerous.

We have the capability to work with a variety of different metals, including a really cool gold alloy that cannot be made in nature. What is interesting is that, when utilising these metallic nanocrystals as catalysts in health applications, a difference of a few atoms on the surface can significantly change the energy levels of the electrons. The correct energy level is what allows various reactions to occur.

So, there are numerous potential applications sitting on our shelves. What people who have worked on the CNM-Au8 project have realised is that the impact of these nanocatalysts is beyond just the first three neurodegenerative diseases. In fact, I may be so bold as to say most neurodegenerative diseases could probably benefit from a boost in metabolic activity when it is compromised. There is also a variety of diseases associated with ageing, including cancer, in which there is a metabolic paradigm shift and these could also be targets for Clenes bioenergetic nanocatalysts in the future.

I think we could eventually touch many human beings on the planet if we have enough people and financial capacity. Our company was founded with the hope to help overburdened healthcare systems worldwide with our stable liquid suspensions that may improve both health span and possibly life span.

He added that his entire team is currently focused on the development, clinical testing and scaling up the production of Clenes Au8 lead candidate, so these projects will have to wait.

In the interview, Mortenson explained that two people inspired his thinking and therefore the company. He said that Professor Rustum Roy, who started the Materials Research Laboratory at Pennsylvania State University (Penn State), taught him that the world is far more than he had been taught and, as a result, infinitely more interesting. Rustum introduced him to a whole new way of thinking: the unanswered questions were the impetus for his work.

Dr Roy also introduced Mortenson to Hans-Peter Durr, who was the vice executive director of the Max Planck Institute for Theoretical Physics at Heidelberg, who proceeded to expand Mortensons perspective on quantum physics. These two then introduced and included Mortenson in small discussions with several leading scientific minds and Nobel laureates, at which point Mortenson felt honored to be included!

He realised that his role was to unite the different disciplines of electrochemistry, materials science and physics with biology and to help break down artificial barriers in science even after these individuals passed away. While both passed around 10 years ago now, Mortenson emphasised that they are the reason that Clene strives to think beyond narrow areas of expertise and why the company is where it is now.

You can tell a lot about a persons emotional state by their breath and their posture. When a person is anxious, their breaths are shallow or short. Their posture may also be closed off, not allowing the chest to be fully open. When a person is laughing, they are breathing from the belly and their shoulders move up and down. When a person is angry or shouting, they are breathing from above the diaphragm. When they are weeping, they are hunched over and breathing from the top of the lungs. Emotions can be better managed by being aware of the emotional/physical connection between the breath and the posture. Meditation and mindfulness assist the mind, body and spirit to relax.

You can do guided meditations, put on beautiful calming music or use drumming to help you reach the meditation gap. The gap is the space between the conscious mind and the unconscious mind. It is the space where you feel light, like you could float away. You no longer are aware of your body. Nothing matters except where you are in the moment. You feel peaceful and relaxed.

It is normal for your mind to wander during meditation. Simply allow thoughts to float in and float out. Dont focus on the thoughts or worry about them cluttering your mind.

Counting your breath: Focusing on the breath-inhale for a count of eight and exhaling to a longer count of 16 calms the nervous system and helps maintain present moment awareness. Do a few minutes of counted breathing to reduce stress, anxiety or overwhelm. It can be done with your eyes closed or open. It can be used while sitting in thick traffic or during a stressful event. It reduces the release of cortisol, the stress-promoting hormone.

Mantras/Empowering words: Stating mantras or empowering words out loud (chanting) or to yourself helps you to focus on the present moment and to reach the meditation gap. For example, Inhale peace, exhale calm, or Inhale love, exhale light.

Flame gazing: Focus on the flame and breathe. Just like sitting next to a cozy, mesmerizing fire, focusing on the flame of the candle can help you be more present.

Coloring mandalas: There are many mandala coloring books out there. The Buddist monks use colored sand to hand-make mandalas as part of their meditation practice. It is very calming and the final outcome is beautiful.

Guided meditation: During this kind of meditation, you listen to a person take you through a series of relaxation exercises for the mind. There are many different apps available, from stress relief to help with sleep.

Walking meditations or nature walks: Walking meditations on a labyrinth (geometric path), or out in a peaceful forest, beach or mountain is very good for the soul. Focus on the outdoor sounds, the scenery and your breath.

Gratitude Shower: Close your eyes and focus on all the things you are grateful for in this life. Allow the gratitude to radiate out from your heart and expand outward. This can take as little as two to five minutes.

Move more Invite family, friends, or colleagues to walk with you regularly, add the date on both your calendars, and text or call to make sure you both get out for a walk. At least 2 hours of activity each week is suggested, which is equivalent to 30 minutes a day, five days a week, or 10 to 15 minutes a few times per day.

Eat heart-healthy We tend to eat like our friends and family, so ask others close to you to join in your effort to eat healthier. Aim to eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and low-fat dairy. Limit sodium, saturated fats, added sugar, and alcohol. It can be as simple as choosing drinks without added sugar such as water, milk, or 100% juice.

Quit smoking To help you quit, ask others for support or join an online support group. Research shows that people are much more likely to quit if their spouse, friend, or sibling does. Hawaiian Huli Huli Chicken

12 oz boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into one-inch cubes (about two large breasts)

1 C fresh pineapple, diced (or canned pineapple chunks in juice)

8 6-inch wooden skewers

Sauce Ingredients

2 Tbsp ketchup

2 Tbsp lite soy sauce

2 Tbsp honey

2 tsp orange juice

1 tsp minced garlic

1 tsp minced ginger

Preheat a broiler or grill on medium-high heat. Thread three chicken cubes and three pineapple chunks alternately on each skewer. Combine ingredients for the sauce and mix well; separate into two bowls and set one aside for later. Grill skewers for three to five minutes on each side. Brush or spoon sauce (from the bowl that wasnt set aside) onto chicken and pineapple about every other minute. Discard the sauce when done with this step. To prevent the chicken from drying out, finish cooking skewers in a 350-degree oven immediately after grilling (to a minimum internal temperature of 165 degrees). Using a clean brush or spoon, coat with sauce from the set aside bowl for serving. This dish pairs well with brown rice and grilled vegetables.
