In case you missed it, Bitcoin Cash (BCH)—a Bitcoin baby born after Bitcoin’s hard-fork earlier this year—has just become available for buying and selling on America’s biggest digital currency exchange, Coinbase.

Litecoin, on the contrary, has been trading on Coinbase since May this year. But that’s not the only lead it has over Bitcoin Cash.

What’s the big deal?

Well, both were major exchanges. Both contributed $250,000 apiece to Hyperledger. And both downgraded their status from Premium to General members.

In other words, this is a serious blow to the consortium that Hyperledger was trying to build.

It was an attempt to find more use-cases for blockchain technology, then fund the creation.

The Handbook of Clinical Neurology (HCN) was originally conceived and edited by Pierre Vinken and George Bruyn as a prestigious, multivolume reference work that would cover all the disorders encountered by clinicians and researchers engaged in neurology and allied fields. Welcome! At the UF Health Integrative Medicine Program we treat the whole person mind, body and spirit and are dedicated to helping you achieve optimal health and well-being in all aspects of life.

The Integrative Medicine Program is an outgrowth of UF Health Shands Arts in Medicine, one of the largest arts in health care programs in the nation. Arts in Medicine uses music, visual arts and performing arts to enhance the hospital experience of patients and families and for years, its provided services such as massage and yoga to staff. Often, staff would ask if the Arts in Medicine team could offer these services to patients, Mullen says. Unfortunately, without the resources or medical expertise, the answer had to be no.

But three years ago, things started to fall into place to change that. A certified yoga practitioner with special training to work with cancer patients joined the team. Two sizeable donations were made to the program by community members interested in supporting integrative medicine with others soon to follow. UF Health leadership singled out Estores, a fellow of the University of Arizonas nationally recognized integrative medicine center, as a medical professional who could potentially lead integrative medicine practices at UF, says Robert Leverence, M.D.

It was an alignment of the stars; we had these gifts at hand and a potential champion whod be able to lead the effort in integrative medicine, says Leverence, vice chair of clinical affairs in the UF College of Medicines department of medicine. We needed someone who understands at a deep level the interface between physical health, emotional health and spiritual health.

With support from UF Health leadership, Estores assumed the role of medical director in August 2013 and she and Mullen began building a small team of integrative medicine practitioners and instructors.

Dr. Estores has brought immediate legitimacy to the notion that we will be providing medical practices as opposed to simply creative arts practices, Mullen says. She was immediately able to take a team and transform it from a non-medical-based practice to a medical-based practice.

Although a Bitcoin futures market is the biggest sign Wall Street is taking cryptos seriously, it is far from the only sign. For example, Bloomberg just added Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, and Litecoin to its price feed.

This is a big gesture, considering that almost all major banks and investment firms use Bloomberg terminals. It is their portal into market movements.

Having these cryptos listed on the terminals means that Wall Street wants a minute-by-minute account of these currencies. It could also mean traders.

The Department of Chemistry at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) was founded in 1989. Today it is a bi-coastal department with faculty at the California (La Jolla) and the Florida (Jupiter) campuses of TSRI. Its mission includes both education and training at the graduate and postdoctoral level and research and development in the chemical and biological sciences. While most research activities within the department focus primarily on biomedical research, a number of efforts are also directed toward nanotechnology, new energy sources, and the environment.

Chemistry aims to understand matter, create new forms of matter, and translate its new discoveries into useful products, as well as provide enabling technologies for other disciplines, including biology and medicine. Chemistry is indispensable as a science, for it provides the ability to understand living systems at the molecular level. Chemistry is central to the drug discovery and development process, providing the molecules that eventually become the medicines that cure and treat disease. Fuels, polymers, plastics, and other high-tech materials are also the products of chemistry. The sophistication of all these products depends on the state of the science of chemistry, particularly its ability to synthesize and understand the nature of molecules and their properties. It is essential to continue to advance the field of chemistry at the fundamental level so as to provide state-of-the-art tools to design, synthesize, and evaluate new functional molecules for specific applications. In addition to advancing the field of chemistry, faculty in the department are searching for cures for diseases, including cancer, Alzheimers and other neurodegenerative diseases, HIV-AIDS and other viral diseases, and tuberculosis and other bacterial infections. Others are developing new technologies for RNA evolution, DNA sequencing, nanomedicine, and stem cell research. Faculty are also active in the areas of total synthesis of natural products and their designed analogs, natural product discovery, biosynthesis, pathway engineering, medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, transition metal catalysis and biocatalysis, peptide and protein chemistry, as well as the discovery of new synthetic strategies and technologies. These and other endeavors aim to advance our fundamental knowledge in chemistry and to apply it for the betterment of mankind and human health.

In the past years, researchers have done many improvements in the different devices and systems required to develop nanorobots. This supposes a new way of treating and dealing with diseases such as cancer; thanks to nanorobots, side effects of chemotherapy have been controlled, reduced and even eliminated, so some years from now, cancer patients will be offered an alternative to treat this disease instead of chemotherapy, which causes secondary effects such as hair loss, fatigue or nausea killing not only cancerous cells but also the healthy ones.

Nanoelectronics:

Nanoelectronics are based on the application of nanotechnology in the field of electronics and electronic components. Although the term Nanoelectronics may generally mean all the electronic components, special attention is given in the case of transistors. These transistors have a size lesser than 100 nanometers. Visibly, they are very small that separate studies must be made for knowing the quantum mechanical properties and inter-atomic design. As a result, though the transistors appear in the nanometer range, they are designed through nanotechnology. Their design is also very much different from the traditional transistors and usually falls in the category of one dimensional nanotubes/nanowires, hybrid molecular electronics, or advanced molecular electronics. This technology is said to be the next future, but its practicality is near to impossible even now that they may be difficult to emerge soon.

Nano architectonics:

The time for a major paradigm shift from nanotechnology to Nano architectonics has come. Scientists in nanoscience and nanotechnology have been creating fine nanomaterials and Nano systems using advanced physical techniques and apparatus, mainly as separate processes. These involve the fabrication of small objects and the observation of their behaviors. However, we are now must construct fine systems from these nanocomponents like the way that carpenters architect house and buildings. Technological efforts at the nanoscale must be organized and converted into the new concept of Nano architectonics

Nanophysics:

Nanotechnology is all about designing, fabricating and controlling materials and components with dimensions on the nanoscale, i.e. from 1 to 100 nm. During the Master's programme in Nanomaterials and Nanophysics you will learn how nanotechnology can be used in order to develop new optic and electronic components and new materials for use in communications technology, sensor technology or catalysis.

Nano mechanics:

The Nano mechanics investigates mechanical properties of engineered and biological materials at the Nano to macro-scale using experimental, analytical, and computational techniques. MEMS/NEMS (Microelectromechanical system/ Nanoelectromechanical system) devices are sensitive to a wide range of stimuli such as temperature, mass, pressure and are thus extensively used as sensors in cars and mobile phones. The biggest promise of MEMS and NEMS technology is the development of extremely small sensor systems that can be used virtually everywhere and thus can impart intelligence to almost all man-made things.

Nanorobotics:

A nanorobotics is a machine that can build and manipulate things precisely at an atomic level. Imaging a robot that can pluck, pick and place atoms like a kid plays with LEGO bricks, able to build anything from basic atomic building blocks. While some people dismiss the future of nanorobots as science fiction, you should realize that each of us is alive today because of countless nanobots operating within each of our trillions of cells. We give them biological names like a ribosome, but they are essentially machines programmed with a function like read messenger RNA to create a specific protein.

Nano chemistry:

Nano chemistry, described the field as "an emerging subdiscipline of solid-state chemistry that emphasizes the synthesis rather than the engineering aspects of preparing little pieces of matter with nanometer sizes in one, two or three dimensions. The Nano chemist can be considered to work towards this goal from the atom 'up', whereas the nanophysics tends to operate from the bulk 'down'." Today, Nano chemists work in biomedical chemistry, polymer chemistry, product synthesis, and a host of other areas. They use a wide variety of methods to prepare and assemble "little pieces of matter" with novel electronic, magnetic, optical, chemical, and mechanical behaviors that can be attributed to their nanometer-scale size.

Nanotechnologies make use of very small objects or artifacts. Nanomaterials are an increasingly important product of nanotechnologies. They contain nanoparticles, smaller than 100 nanometers in at least one dimension. Nanomaterials are coming into use in healthcare, electronics, cosmetics and other areas. Their physical and chemical properties often they differ from those of bulk materials, so they call for specialized risk assessment. Ultimately, the goal is to establish a fully integrated knowledge of how the building blocks of humans cells work at the molecular level. It is only by a detailed knowledge of how cells work, independently and together, in healthy and diseased states that one will be able to understand and anticipate the onset and effects of disease and create an appropriate and effective means to prevent and treat disease. The unravelling of cellular and molecular mechanisms that could be used to reprogram or instruct cells would enable unprecedented advances in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Nanotechnology supporters believe that it has the potential to transform our lives dramatically, while opponents of nanotechnology fear that self-replicating "nanobots" could escape from laboratories and reduce all life on earth. Some ethical discussions have been focused on the field of molecular nanotechnology. The lack of meritorious ethics research proposals may be related to the difficulty in identifying or anticipating ethical issues that are unique to nanobiotechnology, particularly its near-term applications.

The biotechnology industry is constantly growing; during the past 10 years the number of employees has increased by more than 90 percent! If you enjoy science, math, technology, investigating and solving problems, and making useful products, a career in biotechnology may be for you. To begin to prepare for a career in biotechnology, here are several steps to consider that may be helpful.

Education and training requirements for positions in the biotechnology industry vary greatly depending on the type of position, the size of the company, and the industry sector.

Historically, the biotechnology industry has needed intellectual talent at the master's degree and doctoral levels, but the growth of the industry has caused a shift in the types of workers needed to fill critical skill gaps. The education needed for scientific positions ranges from an Associate's Degree to a Doctoral degree, with many community colleges now offering curricula to train biotechnology technicians.

Additionally, there are many other occupations within biotechnology such as: quality control, quality assurance, information technology, human resources, facilities, and infrastructure maintenance and manufacturing.

While many positions in quality control and assurance, as well as information technology, human resources, and manufacturing do require four-year degrees, a significant and growing number of positions now require two-year degrees or less. Manufacturing positions for example, require only a high school degree and training.

Most importantly, make sure to be well-rounded in all subject areas. Although scientific knowledge is important, people entering biotechnology careers need basic skills such as computer use, effective written and verbal communication, and math ability.

Make contacts and network in the biotechnology field. Talk to professionals. Be familiar with state and national biotech organizations and professional groups. Join the Biotechnology Institute forums and connect with our social media communities. Gain experience in the industry through work-based learning opportunities such as internships, co-ops, work study, and job shadowing.

Be aware of developments in the field. Research on the web, and read newspapers, trade journals, and technical magazines as well as our industry and research news feed on the homepage.

The Industry Handbook: Biotechnology

Biotechnology uses of biological processes in the development or manufacture of a product or in the technological solution to a problem. Since the discovery of DNA in 1953, and the identification of DNA as the genetic material in all life, there have been tremendous advances in the vast area of biotechnology. Biotech has a wide range of uses including food alterations, genetic research and cloning, human and animal health care, pharmaceuticals and the environment.

The biotech arena has not been without controversy. In the 1970s, researchers were forced to stop doing certain types of DNA experiments, and other countries banned the use of genetically modified agricultural products. More recently, we've seen the controversy over cloning as well as stem-cell research. Perhaps the biggest development in the biotechnology field (as far as investors go) occurred when, in the 1980s, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to allow for patenting of genetically modified life forms. This means that intellectual property will always be at the forefront of biotechnology - some argue that the scope of patent protection actually defines the industry.

Because of extremely high research and development costs coupled with very little revenue in the years of development, many biotechnology companies must partner with larger firms to complete product development. Over the past decade, the biotech industry, along with the hundreds of smaller companies operating in it, has been dominated by a small handful of big companies; however, any one of these smaller companies have the potential to produce a product that sends them soaring to the top.

Key Ratios/Terms

Research and Development (R&D) as a percentage of Sales = R&D ExpendituresRevenue

Generally speaking, the higher the percentage spent on R&D, the more is being spent developing new products. Thus, the lower this is, the better. This ratio is useful when comparing one company to another or to the industry in general. (To learn more, read The Ins And Outs Of In-Process R&D Expenses.)

Medicare/Medicaid: This national health insurance program is responsible for reimbursing individuals for certain health related costs. Any sudden changes in funding and reimbursement rates can have profound effects on the biotech industry. (For more insight, read What Does Medicare Cover?)

Orphan Drugs: These are drugs designed to treat people with rare diseases and infections (occurring in less than 200,000 individuals). Once the drugs are marketed to the public, orphan drug makers might not benefit from huge demand, but governments will usually subsidize many of the costs of producing these drugs.

Because drug development is an important aspect of biotechnology, understanding the process of approval of drugs for sale to the problem is also an important part of investing in the biotech industry.

Analyst InsightAnalyzing even a blue-chip company is no easy task. The job is even more difficult when the company in question has very little revenue and its livelihood hinges on one or two potential products.

As with analyzing any company, estimating earnings is key. Because of the long R&D phase, during which there is little revenue coming in, determining the prospective earnings of a biotech company is tricky. You can start by looking at the company's products in both development and production. For a company that is already selling products, looking at the sales trends makes it easy to determine the growth rates and market potential for the drug. For products in the pipeline you need to look at the disease that the drug/product intends to target and how large that market is. A drug that cures the common cold, cancer or heart disease is more lucrative than an orphan drug targeting an obscure disease affecting fewer than 100,000 people in North America; furthermore, most analysts prefer companies that are developing treatments as opposed to vaccines. Treatment drugs are used continuously and repeatedly, whereas vaccines are a one-time shot and are not nearly as lucrative from a financial perspective. Ideally, you want a company to have several products in development. That way, if one does not make it through the approval process, there are other products to balance the blow. At the same time, there is a happy medium between a company being too focused, and a company having so many developing ideas and products that it loses focus and spreads itself too thin.

Next, you want to take a look at is how far the company's products are in the stages of clinical development, and how close the product is to FDA approval. All companies wishing to sell drugs and/or biotech products in the U.S. require FDA approval. If a company is relatively new at the FDA process, you can expect it to take longer for it to gain approval. It is for this reason that many small biotech companies will partner with larger, more experienced ones. The difference of one year in gaining approval can mean millions of dollars.

As the key to any successful biotech company is solid financing, you also must consider where the company is getting its money from. Take a look under current assets on the balance sheet; the company should have plenty of cash. By looking at the current ratio/working capital ratio you should be able to determine whether it is cash stricken. Because ratios vary wildly across different industries, compare the ratios only to those of similar companies within the biotech industry. The reason for the variation is that most biotech companies use equity financing instead of borrowing, partly because equity is cheaper and partly because many banks and creditors usually refuse to finance such high-risk ventures for which there is a gross lack of collateral.

The other question you need to answer is where the company's money is being spent. Research and development should be the answer. Most biotech firms spend a majority of their money on R&D for new products. Some believe that the more a company spends on R&D, the better the company. Even more important, however, is finding a company that does a lot of research while still controlling expenses to make the cash last for the years ahead. For companies with sales, the process is a little easier: you can look at R&D expenditures in relation to revenue, employees, or some other measure, and then compare it to similar biotech firms. This gives insight into how frugal the company is with its money.

When considering investing in biotech, doing a simple stock screen based on earnings, revenue or some other financial figure might not uncover the diamond in the rough. You need to research the potential market for a drug, determine whether there are competitive products and, most importantly, predict whether the product will gain final approval. This doesn't mean you need to be a doctor to analyze a biotech stock, but you do need to understand the area of biotechnology in which the company is situated, and whether the risk of investing in the company is worth the reward.

Resveratrol | Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

Resveratrol acts as an antioxidant and inhibits oxidation of low density lipoproteins (LDL)(21), plateletaggregation, and eicosanoid synthesis(4). It also induces nitric oxide (NO) production(24)(25) and increases arterial blood flow(8). These actions may contribute to its purported cardiovascular health benefits.

Resveratrol acts as an anti-inflammatory agent by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) activity(26). It has been shown to decrease C-reactive protein and tumor necrosis factor, and to increase anti-inflammatory interleukin-10 and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 in humans(5). Resveratrol decreases oxidative stress and improves insulin sensitivity by increasing protein kinase activities(10). It decreases circulating insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-I) and IGF-binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) levels(27) which may account for its antidiabetic effects in humans.

Preliminary data suggest that resveratrol increases the life span of yeast cells by activating sirtuins(1)(2). Recent study shows it inhibits human Sirt3 and stimulates Sirt5, in addition to Sirt1(28).

In vitro and animal studies show that resveratrol has anticancer activities. It inhibits proliferation of cancer cells via apoptosis and by exerting anti-estrogenic effects(14)(15)(16)(17). However, contradictory data from other studies showed that it acts as a phytoestrogen and could activate genes that are normally regulated by estrogens(18) or androgens(19).

Trans-resveratrol appears to decrease methylation of the tumor suppressor gene RASSF-1alpha in women at increased breast cancer risk(29). In addition, reductions in breast cancer cell migration and invasion were observed after treatment with resveratrol(30)(31). Resveratrol growth factor heregulin-beta1 (HRG-beta1) mediated matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP-9) expressions in human breast cancer cells(30).

Resveratrol may help reduce prostate tumorigenesis through a reduction inprostatic levels of mTOR complex 1 (mTORC1) activity and increased expression of SIRT1(32). Another study demonstrated that resveratrol modulates steroid hormone-dependent pathways to inhibit prostate cancer cell growth. However, resveratrol also increases angiogenesis and inhibitsapoptosis in vivo(19).

In an animal model, resveratrol downregulated p21and upregulated cyclin E leading to S-phase accumulation and apoptosis in neuroblastoma cells(14). Italso inhibitedCYP1A1, CYP1A2, and CYP1B1 enzymesin tumor cells, perhapsexerting antitumor effects as some of these enzymes are known to be involved in the activation of procarcinogens and toxins(22)(23).

Protective effects of resveratrol against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity are due to upregulation of SIRT1-mediated p53 deacetylation.(20). It also protects against cisplatin-induced cardiotoxicity through the suppression of oxidative stress(19).

A long, long time ago, in a galaxy not that far away, Wall Street was supposedly gearing up for a "giant short" on Bitcoin futures.

It was considered an open secret; a poisoned arrow that would prick the "Bitcoin bubble" that crypto bears said is on the verge of collapse.

And yet, when the Chicago Board of Options Exchange (CBOE) unveiled its Bitcoin futures contract on December 10, prices shot up by 20%.
