'Grey's Anatomy' actress campaigns for Obama in Bettendorf

BETTENDORF, Iowa --- "Grey's Anatomy star Kate Walsh stumped for Obama on Saturday in Bettendorf, saying Iowa has inspired her to speak out for the presidents re-election bid.

Iowa is quintessential America, the 45-year-old actress said. This state launched Obama toward the presidency in 2008.

After a stop at an early voting center set up at the Bettendorf Public Library, Walsh visited with supporters at the Bettendorf home of Ferdaus Ahmad before traveling to Dubuque to join the candidate for an appearance later in the day.

Walsh, whose father was Irish, said she never forgot where she came from, describing how her parents struggled to create a new life in the United States. Walsh said she spent 20 years paying off college debt, and it took a starring role in Greys Anatomy to finally get out of debt.

I got to have my American dream, she said. I was in the 47 percent, but now Im fortunate enough to be in the 1 percent while so many others are struggling.

Omar Ahmad, Ferdaus Ahmads son, said with a few days left before the election, hes excited about Obamas chances in the battleground Midwestern state.

Every four years, people look to Iowa, Ahmad said. Right here in Bettendorf, were getting national coverage. This is where elections are won or lost.
