City Officials Tour Advanced Aerospace Manufacturing Company In College Point – Western Queens Gazette

With assistance from the city, S&L Aerospace Metals plans to expand and create 20 good-paying industrial jobs.Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development Alicia Glen and New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) President and CEO James Patchett toured on July 19 S&L Aerospace Metals, LLC, a premier hydraulic aircraft manufacturing company based in College Point. The city and EDC sold two lots to S&L so it could expand its business, which is adjacent to the lots. The acquisition enables S&L, which currently has 84 full-time workers, to create approximately 20 new advanced manufacturing jobs for local residents.

Founded in 1947, S&L Aerospace Metals, LLC currently assembles metal parts and landing gear and hydraulic assemblies for U.S. Armed Forces and commercial aerospace companies. Their clientele includes the United States Government, Boeing, Raytheon, Helicopter Support, Sikorsky Aircraft, BF Goodrich, Airbus, and more. S&L has provided well-paying jobs for College Point residents for over a decade; a significant majority of the companys employees are foreign born, do not have advanced degrees, and live within a 10-mile radius.

This is the definition of advanced manufacturing: precision parts for Black Hawk helicopters and commercial aviation, made by hands and machines right here in Queens, said Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen.This sector has a bright future in New York City, and were investing so that home-grown firms like S&L Aerospace Metals can keep adding good-paying jobs.

New York Citys industrial and manufacturing sectors are critical to a successful economy and provide thousands of jobs for New Yorkers throughout the five boroughs, said NYCEDC President and CEO James Patchett. S&L Aerospace Metals revitalization and expansion is an example of how a New York City-born and bred industrial company can survive and adapt to our ever-changing economic climate. By working with businesses like S&L Aerospace Metals, were making sure that our homegrown companies are not only staying here, but are also thriving here.

S&L Aerospace was founded in New York City in 1947, and its our goal to make sure it continues to grow in New York City. Were proud of our unparalleled reputation and expanding our facility will allow us to keep being one of Americas most reliable aerospace manufacturers, said S&L Aerospace Metals President Jerry Wang and Executive Vice President Ted Varvatsas.

The first phase of construction, the renovation of an existing building, which is adjacent to S&Ls existing facility, is complete. The second phase, the construction of a new building, is anticipated to commence shortly and be complete within a year of commencement. The completion of both phases is expected to deliver approximately 34,000 square feet of new manufacturing space.

The industrial and manufacturing sector is a key focus of Mayor de Blasios jobs plan, New York Works, a series of 25 initiatives that will spur 100,000 jobs with good wages over the next decade. The expansion of S&L Aerospace also builds upon Mayor de Blasio and Speaker Melissa Mark-Viveritos 10-Point Industrial Action Plan, designed to spur the growth industrial and manufacturing businesses that are critical to the citys larger economy, backed by more than $115 million in funding. Both programs will ensure that longstanding businesses and new firms will have the space to grow and evolve, preserving and creating good jobs in New York City.
