Qatmuk - Stand Our Ground 2012
For almost 20 years the Ktunaxa have said no to Jumbo Glacier Resort. A ski resort proposed in the heart of an area, we, the Ktunaxa call Qatmuk. For Ktunaxa, Qatmuk is where the Grizzly Bear Spirit was born, goes to heal itself, and returns to the spirit world. The Grizzly Bear Spirit is a unique and indispensable source of collective and individual guidance, strength, and protection for Ktunaxa. Jumbo Resort, if built, will sever this special and significant connection that we have developed over a 10000 year period. Ktunaxa have been the victim of residential schools, and systematically attempts to destroy our culture and heritage. We hid our language, culture and spiritual beliefs, in order to save them from attempts by the government to often beat them out of our lives. We resorted to keeping our most precious beliefs a secret, in order to protect and preserve them for future Ktunaxa generations. Despite attempts to destroy who we were.... We survived Despite attempts to destroy our spirituality.... We persevered Nobody has the right to take away what is rightfully ours. We shared information with the BC Government that we hold very dear, and do not trust outsiders with, yet they chose not hear our words. Despite it impacting Ktunaxa spirituality forever. Despite the majority of local residents not wanting it, deeply impacting the environment and grizzly population, having no net economic benefit to the people of BC.
