The skies over Pinehurst, NC were crowded Saturday, December 8th, 2012 as local pilots provided a day of free aerial tours of Moore County to any child from ages 8-17 on a first-come, first-served basis. Sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter #1220, based at the Carthage Airport, Carthage, North Carolina, this semi-annual event is called the "Young Eagles Fly-in." A record was set last December with 275 participants. "Flying is a wonderful experience and possible gateway to a great career," according to Jim Murray, chapter coordinator. "The goal of the Young Eagles program is to introduce kids to the fun and excitement of flying, and perhaps get them interested in a career in aviation, engineering, meteorology, or some other aspect of the aerospace industry." Pinecrest High School Jr. AFROTC cadets staff the welcome desk and handle the paperwork that matches passengers to pilots. The Airport Authority contributes the fuel, and Boy Scout Troop 810 provides burgers and hot dogs for lunch. All of the pilots are volunteers and donate their time and their airplanes to share their love of flying. The Experimental Airplane Association sponsors the overall Young Eagles program, and operates the "EAA Air Academy" in Oshkosh, WI every summer.
