Space Shuttle Atlantis Final Landing at Kennedy Space Center
The Space Shuttle was a partially reusable launch system and orbital spacecraft developed and operated by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for human spaceflight missions and latterly servicing the International Space Station. The Space Shuttle program was inaugurated with 4 orbital test flights in 1981 which led to operational flights beginning in 1982. In total theshuttle was used on a total of 135 missions between 1981 and 2011, all of them launched from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida. In total 5 shuttle craft were built - Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour were the space-capable orbiters that were built. Tragically, two Space Shuttles Challenger and Columbia disintegrated on operational duty with the loss of both crews of 7 astronauts.
